A BJ Review: Just a Bit Confusing (Straight Guys #5) by Alessandra Hazard

Standard

Rating:  3.75 stars out of 5

Just a Bit ConfusingBest friends, inseparable since childhood, one in love with the other, the other straight and in love with a woman.

Stories like this don’t have a happy ending; James Grayson knows it. He puts on a smile, he laughs, he jokes, and he pretends he’s fine when Ryan kisses his girlfriend in front of him—until he can’t.

Except nothing is easy and letting go turns out to be much harder than one might think. Some bonds are too strong to be broken, even for a straight man. And sometimes love and desire can have different faces and layers.

A story of two men trying to function without each other and failing.

I’m not a huge contemporary reader, but this has been one of my fav contemporary series ever since the first book came out. I’ve devoured and enjoyed each and every one, some a bit more than others, but none that I’d hesitate for a second to highly recommend. When I began reading this story, I thought for about the first 25% or so that I may have ran into the first book I couldn’t so heartily recommend.

Why didn’t the beginning grab me, I keep asking myself. There seemed to be a lot more ‘telling’ in this than in prior books for one thing. Also there are some strange POV such as a section from a waitress who we never see again in the story. I realize it was to give an outside overview of the characters, but perhaps that could have been done using a character integral to the series like Luke or Zach maybe? Just a thought. A few of the scene jumps at the beginning confused me, and while I adored Tristan and Zach later in this book, when initially introduced, they didn’t seem like the guys I remembered much.

Once the story took off for me, it was as hot as I’ve come to expect from this author. Lots of UST. Revisiting with Zach and Tristan was fun, and I enjoyed how their relationship had progressed and how Tristan grew in this one. The exploration of the relationships between Tristan, James, and Arthur definitely lived up to my hopes for the story. And while I liked both of the main characters, I did tend to think Ryan was just too stupid for words at times. The way he could not let go thinking of James as a baby brother, despite that he was a friend who was just a month younger than him, seemed strange to me and got to be annoying. Which didn’t mean that I wasn’t chomping at the bit for him to finally wise up as, yeah, those two together had chemistry for sure.

By the end, I was completely and totally hooked back on this series. The set up for the next book, Luke’s story, is killer! I can hardly wait to read that one.

This cover is a bit hard to read (image-wise) at a smaller size and thus is not an immediate grabber. But sort of like the story, it grew on me.

A Stella Review:Of Gods and Monsters: Menoetius (Of Gods and Monsters #1) by Wulf Francu Godgluck

Standard

RATING 5 out of 5 stars              ★★★★★

Menoetius coverGo ahead…hate me.
Slaughter me against the wall.
I never introduced myself as the goddamn hero. Even labeling me a pussy bad boy.

I’m an imperious villain! A tyrant cut from the bone of the worst kind of monster.

This is my story and I won’t change it for anyone in the world, but…

For him? The one who calls me Master… This is no forever fairy tale romance. This is RAW. This is ripping your heart out and trampling it till there’s nothing left but an angry bloody messRAW.
He was the one who saw through my cracks, who would suffer my pain, blood and tears, working to mend those still bleeding wounds on my soul.
He stood through my violent storm, hiding the battle raging inside him, one I was too stupid to see, that was tearing apart the only man I would ever love.
It took almost losing him to see that, to understand, to comprehend what he truly was to me.

Mine.

My precious boy.

My beautiful Beo.

Dear Author,
He calls me “Master”, but I’m the one who’s really a slave to his heart. I’m supposed to be strong, but I feel so weak every time I think about how we almost didn’t have this… how close I came to losing him… my precious boy.

Photo Description:
The photo shows a young man with thick, dark hair pinned on a bed, hands clasped above his head by the man on top of him. The other man’s circumcised cock is on offer, barely touching the young man’s nose. The young man’s tongue is placed directly against the other man’s cock. There is a power exchange but also something else. The man beneath him is daring, teasing his cock— but look closer. Their hands tell an entirely different story. Their fingers are knotted together in a connection deep, powerful and strong. There is love here, with a passion and a playfulness that can only be understood between them.
This is their story.

This story may contain sexually explicit content and is intended for adult readers. It may contain content that is disagreeable or distressing to some readers. The M/M Romance Group strongly recommends that each reader review the General Information section before each story for story tags as well as for content warnings.

I’m writing this review when I just finished re reading the story between Colt and Beo in preparation for the second book in the Of Gods and Monsters series about Hades. I read Moenetius as soon as it was released as part of the Don’t Read in the Closet event in the MM group on  goodreads last years and this second time I loved it more and I couldn’t not change my rating to 5 stars. This is a very intense story, well written and engaging from the first words.

Colt is a wealthy bastard dom, involved in some important criminal activities. One day he meets and falls in love with Beo, the sweet sub who is going through so much in his life. They both are afraid to be together, especially Colt, cause he knows he doesn’t deserve someone like Beo. He isn’t very likeable at first but I loved how Colt became a weak man, as he said at the start, when he met Beo, how he became a better man during the book. I’m a romantic I know, but I love the idea that love can make us better.

I cried a little reading this book, some scenes in the hospital were very emotional to me.  Don’t think for a moment this is the usual BDSM story because you will be wrong, this is a great story with different layers to discover, each of them will bring you to feel various emotions. Love, hate, friendship, loyalty and so much more. There are wrong things and the perfect ones.

There is an interesting second characters cast that I can’t wait to know more about. And if you have already read this book and loved it, just start the second one now. You won’t be disappointed.

One last thing I want to add is about the writing. I particularly like Wulf’s style because, even if its too strong (and a little vulgar sometimes), its is true, simple and immediate. Every time I found myself in beautiful worlds, realistic and unrealistic, but always amazingly done.

Thanks Wulf for writing Colt and Beo’s story, thanks for making me feel every emotion he wrote about.

The COVER ART by Wulf Fracu Godgluck is what caught my attention at first and for once I’m so happy to be a coverwhore, it made me discover a new to me author that soon became one of my favorite ones.

A MelanieM Review: Mate of the Tyger Prince by Shannon West

Standard

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

MateoftheTygerPrince - WestDiplomatic marriages between two members of different planets certainly aren’t unheard of—but for Prince Mikos of Tygeria and Col. Ryan Donnelly of Earth, it might just be a fate worse than death. The union is meant to end a devastating war that has lasted for over a hundred and fifty years, but when the female bride intended for the fierce, sexy prince runs away, her handsome brother is substituted instead. Men are for mating as far as the Tygerian prince is concerned, but the colonel also happens to be Mikos’s sworn enemy, not to mention being completely irritating.

Ryan is horrified to learn that the Tygerians not only expect him to take the place of his sister, marry the Bloody Prince of Tygeria, and go to live with him on his mysterious planet, but they also expect him to undergo physical alteration to have the man’s baby! And nobody is taking hell no for an answer. Ryan’s being asked to turn his whole life upside down and the handsome Tygerian gets under his skin like nobody else. But with the fate of the universe at stake, how can he say no? Can the two enemies put aside their differences and focus on making love and not war—not to mention a baby? As a powerful love struggles to take root, can they learn to trust each other and stand together against the forces that are trying to tear them apart?

Mate of the Tyger Prince by Shannon West combined several of my favorite elements, that of cat shifters (tigers at that) and science fiction and pulled off a winner.  Once I started reading  I couldn’t stop.  This marvelous page turner pulled me in starting with a galatic war that Earth arrogantly expected to win and was now losing at an unimaginable cost of lives and resources.  A bargain has been struck to end the war, a marriage of alliance.  But things  of course do not go as planned.  I loved Shannon West’s descriptions of those involved, the bargaining that takes place is done by an unexpected source, Mikos’ parent and an Earthling like Ryan.

One of the things I actually had to work through was West’s world building and culture for the planet of Tygeria. a very male/dominant order.  So much so that the sexes live separately on different continents/islands by choice, taking their life partners of the same sex.  And in the case of the male Tygerians, male humans have become a favored companion/partner.  Their role is a prescribed one within the Tygerian society.  They run the household, raise the children, a difficult, almost subservient role for a ex-soldier to take on.  Which is exactly what Mikos’ parent also was, a wonderful element of this story.  West makes this aspect of the story work as an important thread of the plot  as well as a part of the interesting layers of Tygerian society.   I can’t wait to see what future books hold.

Another starting twist?  The age difference in the two beings.  I won’t tell you which is which, I’ll let you discover that for yourself.  The characterizations are wonderful and clearly drawn.  Its easy to picture the Tygerians and understand their emotional makeup, as well as see how easily misunderstanding and mistrust could arise between a human and a Tygerian.  Ryan is a heartbreaker, alone and so vulnerable, with the weight of two systems riding on his shoulders.   Actually, there are quite a few characters to fall in love with here, both young (Mikos’ younger brothers for one) and old (his parent for another).

As I said, I flew through this book right to the end.  Then I wanted another.  Its supposed to be the first in a series.  How I hope that’s true and another will follow soon.  This is a world I could wallow in for books to come.  Shannon West?  Are you listening?

Cover art by Eden Connor did a great job with Ryan but oh how I wanted a glimpse of Mikos.

Excerpt:

“Son, are you all right? Your highness…Consort Blake, please! Put a stop to this now—my son is injured!”
“I’m fine, Father,” Ryan said, embarrassed and trying to gently push him off.
“Your son is injured?” the king’s consort said, his eyebrows lifting in outrage. “What about my son? Your son indeed!”
Then as the words sunk in, Blake suddenly straightened up and tilted his head, one eyebrow quirking upward. “Did you say your son?”
“Yes, of course he is! And your son just attacked him!” the consul said, casting a wounded, outraged look back over his shoulder.
Blake smiled then and rubbed his hands together, as eager as a cat who’d just spied a big bowl of tasty cream. “You mean to tell me this young man… Your unmarried son? Well, why didn’t you say so? Who needs the daughter? This one will do fine. In fact, he’ll do even better!” He stepped forward and laid a hand on Prince Mikos’s arm. “Stop playing with him, Miki. You’ll have plenty of time to do that after the wedding. This young man,” he said, gesturing grandly toward Ryan, “is your new mate and royal consort.” He got a speculative look in his eye. “Maybe even the bearer of your children.”

Excerpt:

David opened his locker to get out his Biology, History, and Music History books and shoved them into his backpack, swallowing hard against the lump in his throat. Jonathan’s comforting hand lit on David’s side as he came to lean on the locker to the right of David’s own, holding up in one paint-besmeared hand, a small piece of black cardboard. On it, David saw symbols, ones he thought might be Greek. Remembering the foreign exchange student from Thessaloniki shared Jonathan’s sixth period art class, he smiled and turned to his boyfriend as he took the proffered gift.
“What does it say?” David couldn’t help but smile at the joy lighting Jonathan’s eyes. “This has to be something that Kallias helped you make—”
“You aren’t wrong,” Jonathan interjected. “That is Greek writing and Kallias even taught me how to say it.”
“Enlighten me, please!” David rasped, focusing wholly on Jonathan’s gift. “Say it and then tell me what it means.”
“If I say it right, it’s agape menomou—”
David furrowed his brow, repeating, “A guppy man oh moo?”
Jonathan slid down the locker in a giggle. “Noooo! I must have said it wrong because your face… oh my gosh, your face!”
Blushing and biting his lower lip, David sank down to his haunches in front of Jonathan. “Then say it again, slower, and tell me what it means!”
Jonathan looked around, and seeing no-one in their locker bank, leaned up to whisper the Greek in his ear, the sounds slower… thicker. “Agape menomou means O love of my heart.”

Meet the Author:

M. LeAnne Phoenix would tell you that the worst time of her life was the two years that she attempted to take off from writing. If you asked her to explain exactly why she did such a thing, you would most likely get the mad attempt to arch an eyebrow like her dad and then a shake of the head as she told you it was unlucky to speak of such things. Suffice it to say, it will never happen again!

Born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas in the mid-1970’s, Ms. Phoenix was young and wild (and even free!) during the crazy wondrous decade known as the 1980’s and the even crazier but now grungy decade of the 1990’s. Music is second only to the muses that live and breathe to fill her mind with beautiful men, and music always helps them to tell their stories. She is never without her iPod or her computer no matter where she goes, although, she does like to hike and take pictures of the sky and the moon, and even the occasional shot of the sun through the branches of a tree.

An avid cat lover, Ms. Phoenix has been owned by many throughout her life, though her current owner is one Lily-Rose, who really would like for her to step away from the keyboard and pay her some attention! After all, hasn’t she earned it?
