A Stella Review: With or Without You (Go Your Own Way #2) by Zane Riley

RATING  5+ out of 5 stars

With or Without You by Zane RileyIn the much-anticipated sequel to Go Your Own Way, high school seniors Lennox McAvoy and Will Osborne pick up right where they left off—navigating the tumultuous waters of a new relationship and dealing with Will’s disapproving father.

When a violent incident forces Lennox to give up his independent ways, he must come to terms with his past just as Will is grappling with his future. As Will’s college plans become reality, will Lennox have the courage to go after the opportunities he doesn’t think he deserves?

If you follow my reviews, it’s probably not a mystery I’m a devoted lover of Interlude Press books. Without a doubt Zane Riley  is one of their best authors. I fell in love with Go Your Own Way and this sequel was sublime. I anxiously waited for With Or Without You  and I can say Zane couldn’t have written something better. Now if I could only read the third book right this second it would be perfect.

The story starts where the first book ended. Will’s dad is finally back from the hospital, still recovering and still not liking Lennox at all. Lennox who is living (or trying to live) with Will, although the need to be back to the nasty hotel room his grampa is renting for him is strong, the place where he can escape from all the good things his life is throwing at him.

Will is rightly a little obsessed with college, he’s planning to move to NY while Lennox can’t see a future for him, or a future with his boyfriend. He is still wearing the ankle monitor from when he left the juvinile prison. But despite his pessimism, amazing events are going to present to Lennox.

Why I loved this book so much? First of all, the characters. Zane did an awesome work. The growth and the changes in Lennox and Will were clear, they are becoming strong adult who everyone should be pride of. They are only eighteen years old but Will is a force of nature and Lennox has seen so much in his life all his fears are naturally understandable. What truly caught my heart was the ability of the author at showing me the deep love the characters, main and second ones, feel for each other. It came to me powerfully in every form love can be shown. I submerged myself in the story, sexy and funny, emotional and brave. A warning, this is not a YA book so be ready for some hot scenes.

With Or Without You was so perfect I can’t wait for more. I feel to highly recommend the series (to  read in order) to everyone who is looking for a new, talented author who can greatly write and engage you in beautiful stories.

Book Design by CB Messer and Cover Illustration by Colleen M. Good. It seems to me the cover is a little different in style from the cover of the first book, still I like it a lot.

A MelanieM Review: Black Dog Blues (Kai Gracen, #1) by Rhys Ford

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

black-dog-bluesEver since being part of the pot in a high-stakes poker game, elfin outcast Kai Gracen figures he used up his good karma when Dempsey, a human Stalker, won the hand and took him in. Following the violent merge of Earth and Underhill, the human and elfin races are left with a messy, monster-ridden world, and Stalkers are the only cavalry willing to ride to someone’s rescue when something shadowy appears.

It’s a hard life but one Kai likes—filled with bounty, a few friends, and most importantly, no other elfin around to remind him of his past. And killing monsters is easy. Especially since he’s one himself.

But when a sidhe lord named Ryder arrives in San Diego, Kai is conscripted to do a job for Ryder’s fledgling Dawn Court. It’s supposed to be a simple run up the coast during dragon-mating season to retrieve a pregnant human woman seeking sanctuary. Easy, quick, and best of all, profitable. But Kai ends up in the middle of a deadly bloodline feud he has no hope of escaping.

No one ever got rich being a Stalker. But then few of them got old either and it doesn’t look like Kai will be the exception.

Black Dog Blues is another mashup of gritty fantasy, action/adventure and pure adrenaline rush from Rhys Ford, a favorite author of mine.   The first in a new series, Black Dog Blues introduces us to Kai Gracen, a fae mutt the likes  no one has ever seen before or wants to.  Considered an abomination because Kai is both a sidhe and unseehlie, a genetic mixture that shows on his face and body, his was a nightmare that started at his creation and only stopped when he was won at a poker game by a Stalker.

What a crazy, hard bitten wonder of a character Ford has in Kai Gracen.  When it says tortured childhood, here its in all caps and dripping in Kai’s blood. A survivor of the past, anything other than getting through the present times is never taken for granted in this imaginative and wildly speculative new world order of recognizable and fae caused by the merging of human and Underhill.  The vivid descriptions of how the earth and San Diego now look are wondrous as they are dangerous.  The creatures bounding over lava fields and cracked roadways?  A mixture of old world, new world and fantasy all thrown together.  Dragons hunting antelope?  Yes indeed.  And it feels so real.  Not that anyone with any common sense would want to actually be there. OK maybe a tad.  Truly, the scenes  as wildly scary as they are draw you into the world and Kai’s place in it.

Oh Kai.  Snarly, competent…he belongs in such a wildly uneven and unpredictable world.  You never know what you will meet or where your next enemy or perhaps friend (if that’s possible) will come from.

Kai’s world consists of the people who helped bring up a feral mixed race fae and who helped make him one of the toughest Stalkers out there.  We get to meet them all here and what an amazing lot they are.  Ford makes them all believable and unforgettable, flawed tough, and hardscrabble.

But the scariest of the lot?  The Fae and the Fae court and politics.  This will include Ryder, the sidhe lord who hires Kai and who has his own agenda and motives in mind.  I liked Ryder but he’s so smooth (intentionally so) that it took me a while to warm up to him.  I far preferred the rude, often snarly Kai…especially when he’s poking at the imperious Ryder.

There are some stomach churning moments as  well as ones guaranteed to make your heart race.  Its Rhys Ford’s story afterall and these Fae are the true Fae of the old Tiernan Og.  Those to be feared, with little care for the human world.

And there are dragons, beautiful, fire breathing, fast flying dragons.

Be still my heart.

There’s a sequel out.  And more to come.  Oh happy, happy, reading times ahead.

If you love fantasy, gritty, sometimes scary, wonderful heart stopping, action packed, fantasy packed with memorable characters, then look no further than Black Dog Blues.  I highly recommend it.

Cover art shows Kai Gracen with his dark features.  Its perfect.

Its Release Week for Dreamspun Desire’s The Senator’s Secret by K.C. Wells (excerpt and giveaway)

K.C. Wells – The Senator’s Secret

Author: K.C. Wells
Release Date: September 1 2016
Length: 220 pages

When his Republican opponent outs him with a photo in a Facebook post, Senator Samuel Dalton doesn’t have many options open to him. It doesn’t matter that the photo was totally innocent. He has no choice but to come clean – until his staff suggest putting a spin on it that leaves Sam reeling.

Sure, he’d end up with a lot of sympathy, not to mention the possibility of more voters from the LGBT community, but it still seems a pretty drastic solution.

Now all they have to do is persuade Gary, the other man in the photo, to play along. It sounds so easy – convince the constituents of North Carolina that he and Sam are engaged.

“This really burns me, you know?” Becky piped up as she came through the door, iPad in her hand. “Does that Pastor Hartsell think he can just go around, making up shit like this?” She glared at Curtis. “He can’t go around telling everyone Sam is gay when we know he’s not!”

Curtis’s eyes flickered in Sam’s direction before he spoke. “Only, Hartsell didn’t say that, did he?” he chided Becky gently.

Josh snorted. “Yeah, he was real careful about how that post was worded. ‘What is the nature of the relationship…?’ And the part asking folks what that photo said to them? Inspired. His supporters come up with all the shit he wouldn’t dare say. And of course, he doesn’t comment on any of it.” He scowled. “He doesn’t need to; they went ahead and said it all for him. He gets to sit back and read it, while we’re the ones doing the weeping.” Josh stuck out his chin. “So let’s get this statement out. He won’t be so cocky when we’re suing his ass for libel and defamation of character.”

“You sure we want to go that route?” Curtis said quietly.

Sam fired him a look, but Curtis was avoiding his gaze.

“Of course he does,” Becky interjected, her eyes flashing. “Sam can’t just sit here and let that… man hint that he’s… well, it’s just….” She narrowed her eyes. “You know what would cook his goose? If we announced that Sam was gay, and that he and this Gary were secretly engaged. That’d make Hartsell look like a nasty piece of work, outing Sam like that and making him look all sleazy, when they were keeping it quiet so as not to detract from the campaign.” She gave Curtis an evil grin. “Yeah, they’d look all wholesome—a sweet, cute gay couple heading for marriage, and there’s him, trying to make the whole situation seem sordid.”

There was a stunned silence.

Sam was the first to react. “This is not the plot from a Will & Grace episode, all right?” His head was still reeling from her suggestion.

“Wait a minute, wait a minute!” Josh straightened in his chair, his eyes shining. “You might have something there.”

Two heads swiveled in his direction, and from three mouths came the same word simultaneously: “What?”

Josh was nodding, his cheeks flushed. “This might work to our advantage.”

“Excuse me?” Sam was having a hard time dealing with this.

“Oh, come on,” Josh said with a cheeky grin. “Coming out is fashionable these days. Everybody’s doing it—actors, athletes, singers…. Since the SCOTUS decision last year, coming out is the new black.” He waggled his eyebrows. “It’d bring you a whole heap of new supporters, Sam.”

What the…?

Becky was on the edge of her seat. “Yeah. Let everyone see them as a committed couple, putting their relationship on hold until after the election. They’ve not been hiding it, exactly—they just want the focus to be on politics.”

“But—” The turn in the discussion left Sam gaping in amazement.

Josh waved a hand to hush him. “Yeah,” he said, nodding excitedly. “I like that. We do a press conference, break the story, get public opinion on our side, sympathy for the way Hartsell has portrayed their relationship—”

“What relationshi—”

Becky and Josh ignored Sam, lost in their own little world. “Oh my God!” Becky put her hand to her chest. “Can you imagine? The wedding? It would be so beautiful!”

“Wedding? What wed—”

“We’d have lots of photos taken of the happy couple, showing their life together. We could start up a Twitter account where they send cute little tweets to each other.” Josh grinned. “Move over, Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka, Elton John and David Furnish, Ellen and Portia—they could become the gay couple of the decade.”

“Okay, that’s enough!” Sam growled. When his staff jumped and turned to face him, he pointed to the outer door of his office. “You two,” he said, indicating Josh and Becky, “out, now.”

Becky gave him a startled glance before lurching to her feet and scooting out of the room, Josh following her with a perplexed expression.

Sam closed the door behind them and faced his chief of staff. “What. The. Fuck, Curtis?” He glared at his friend, his heart pounding, head aching.

Curtis regarded him calmly. “What have I been telling you?”

Sam stared at him, mouth open. “You… you’re not actually considering their harebrained scheme, are you?”

He shrugged. “Why not?”

Music is Tim Chalmers’s great escape and the one thing that’s never let him down. But his band Spiral’s meteoric rise to fame has made it difficult for the drummer to maintain a low profile. Unwanted press pesters him after a public breakup with a volatile ex-girlfriend who loves the limelight as much as he loathes it. Tim’s main goal is to avoid confrontation. However, when he meets a handsome stranger in a dive bar who turns out to be someone he may know, everything changes.

Carter Hamilton-Temple might be a successful financial consultant with more brains, sophistication, and charm than most, but he always falls for the wrong guys: closet cases or men with issues. He can’t fight his attraction to the tattooed rock star, but can he trust his own judgment? When the thrill of danger combined with a fierce physical connection proves too strong for either man to resist, a quiet liaison away from the public eye and curious friends seems like a safe bet. But some secrets are hard to keep. When rumors threaten to rock his world, Tim realizes it’s time to confront his fear with his own kind of honesty.

“What kind of a rock star are you? You’re supposed to love sex, drugs, and alcohol. I haven’t known you long, but you seem to only really like one out of three,” Carter commented idly as he shuffled the cards.

“You’re right. I’m a sucky rock star. I rarely have more than one drink when I go out for dinner or even at a bar. Two at a party. Anything more usually leads to trouble. And I never take drugs. Even cold medicine makes me nervous.” I winked and gave him a lecherous grin that no doubt looked far from provocative in my current condition. “But I love sex.”
