A Chaos Moondrawn Review:Fairground Attractions Series by L M Somerton

Standard

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

I read and liked the Investigating Love series by this author years ago, so I thought I would try these. This trilogy has one overarching storyline, so although each novella focuses on one couple, they have to be read in order and together for maximum enjoyment. Garth, Stevie, Adam, and Zach are friends from university who work at the local amusement park during the summer breaks. The conversation in the diner at the start of summer lets the reader know what they are in for as each character is described and labeled. The plot focuses on criminals using the park as a cover for their activities: something to further tie together these three stories of couples exploring their different kinks with a hurt/comfort trope for all. I didn’t rate the individual stories because the plot is the same and each reader will have their own preference on what type of sex scene and dynamic appeals to them. The BDSM scenes are all pretty steamy, even though I think they are only there for titillation rather than being truly moving. I also don’t think these are realistic representations of loving D/s relationships, just erotic romances with a bit of fun plot. There is a nudge nudge, wink wink quality since Criminal Minds and the Scooby gang are mentioned.

GHOST TRAIN

This one focuses on the goth of the group, Garth. He is assigned to work on the ghost train ride for the summer. Most of the details are not believable: Clem works as an investigator that helps the police so they just let Garth leave without questioning him after he discovers a dead body. This is rectified somewhat in book two and three. Clem and Garth drive straight into BDSM the next day, with bondage, when he has very little experience and it’s technically their first date. I appreciate that information is gleaned from actual conversations between the characters rather than info dumps. There are little details, like Garth getting hurt, that just don’t disappear–they stay consistently acknowledged. Garth is the bratty type of submissive for Clem, who likes the challenge and play.

MERRY GO ROUND

Stevie is the sweet and shy one in this group of friends, but still no pushover. He has been assigned to the carousel. His best friend, and crush, Adam, is working security at the park. Although one assumes they have been dancing around their attraction for quite awhile, they are virgins who jump into more without talking about it. Whereas the first couple were much more serious about the BDSM, this couple seem more like they are playing at it. This matches them both being inexperienced and is generally cute. Although they are the same age and the dynamics are not all there, Adam is more like a Daddy with no age play.

HELTER SKELTER

Zach has a crush on his former math professor Daniel, who has been dragged into the investigation since he is an expert on mathematical ciphers. He works with the police to decipher the codes the criminals are using. Now that Zach is no longer his student, he is ready to make his move. He is the strictest dom, needing a compliant sub. Again, they rush headlong into a masochistic relationship without any indication Zach would be into that until the first sex scene. There is some scary equipment use here with no discussion about anything. Zach’s father, who owns the park, has not been doing well with all the stress. It is the perfect handing over of the reins for Zach’s care as the police close in on the drug runners and the assassin Harlequin. When Clem and Daniel go to help the police, the three subs can’t resist going to see the conclusion of the investigation.

The epilogue ties up any loose plot strings and gives one more scene between Daniel and Zach. Even though there are several traumatic events in these books, (murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, threats of sexual assault, shooting, and stabbing), they all seem to be there as a reason to excuse the insta-love/lust. The BDSM is used to take everyone’s mind off the criminal investigation and fear. There is amazingly low angst in all three of these. All three couples are looking to the future as the four guys head back to college for their final year.

The cover art is by Erin Dameron-Hill. I love the covers, but they seem quite dark. While there are dark plot points, this is all a bit of fun, so I think some more amusement park colors could have signaled that. Each one highlights the submissive in that story; I think the models used match the characters well.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Rocking Thin Ice by Z. Allora

Standard

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Can a sexy rock star show a relationship-phobic ice skater that there’s more to life than gold medals?

When ice-skating’s bad boy Blaze first glimpses Drake, every fantasy he’s ever had flares to life. Not only is rock star Drake sexy as sin, his songs awaken a longing in Blaze that he’s denied for years. But Blaze Parker doesn’t believe in relationships—at least not those that last more than twenty minutes.

Drake Keys has dreamed about the sensual ice skater for years. When Drake is kicked out of his band because of his bisexuality, he drives across the country to finally see the man he’s had a crush on skate live.

Though the attraction is instant and intense, both Blaze and Drake have baggage that puts any relationship on thin ice. Blaze is driven by a long-ago betrayal to prove himself a champion, and Drake, uncertain about the future, hopes to resurrect his music career. As they take a road trip together, Drake romances Blaze, hoping to melt his heart and show him that love is possible… but not without some tough decisions.

Rocking Thin Ice by Z. Allora is a sweet, easy to embrace contemporary romance.  For me, I found it to be a quick read, full of engaging characters, an interesting plot and a lovely romance.  It skates, pun intended, on the edge of a instant love, but  as both characters have flirted in various ways with each other over the years, it feels like their attraction and love comes more naturally, regardless of time.

Rock star and ice skater star.  That is a marvelous combination and is works with great chemistry here.  If Drake comes across as a little too sweet, well, I enjoyed it.  He was a delight and a terrific match for the snark that is Blaze.  The journey to a long term relationship and HEA is fast paced and one I was absolutely committed to.  I read it in one swoop of a read and loved it.

If you are looking for a lighthearted, sweet romance, then I can recommend Rocking Thin Ice by Z. Allora.  Delightful all the way around from characters to plot.

A MelanieM Audio Review: Burn (Witchbane #1.5) by Morgan Brice and Kale Williams (narrator)

Standard

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

One hundred years ago, a sheriff’s posse killed dark warlock Rhyfel Gremory, but his witch-disciples escaped, and their magic made them nearly immortal. To keep their power, each year one of the witch-disciples kills a descendant of one of the men in the posse, a twelve-year cycle that has cost dozens of lives, including that of Seth Tanner’s brother, Jesse.

Seth uncovers a cycle of ritual murders that feed the witch-disciples’ power, and he saves Evan Malone, one of the warlock’s potential victims. Neither Seth nor Evan expected to fall in love, but when the dust settles, they find themselves on the run and on the road together, heading toward Pittsburgh, on the trail of the next killer.

Seth wonders whether Evan will come to regret his choice to stay together, now that he’s living the reality of Seth’s nomadic life and the risks that come with it. He wants Evan to stay, but he’s afraid that Evan would be better off without him, living a normal life. Evan’s whole world has been upended, but there’s one thing he’s sure of, his love for Seth. Evan worries that he’s a liability, not yet able to hold his own in Seth’s rough-and-tumble world, but determined to do whatever necessary to have Seth’s back. On the way to face the next warlock, supernatural threats abound, forcing them to learn to fight as a team.

Fate and danger threw them together. But once the adrenaline fades, will love last?

Burn is a short follow-up story in the Witchbane series where Seth Tanner and Evan Malone are still adjusting not only to each other but recovering from the recents events from book one, Witchbane and before book two, Dark Rivers.  Their “partnership” is new, from the tentatively forming romance to the decision to carry on and find the rest of the  warlock’s witch disciples. And dispose of them.  So Burn is a story of uncertainty, adjustment, learning, and communication.  All while killing nasty supernatural and paranormal beasties.

It is most definitely NOT a standalone in any way shape or form.  Really wish they would stop doing that in blurbs and descriptions.  It’s a series, people, with world building and this is only an interim story. It most certainly rests on the shoulders of the rest one as any solid building block does.

So, if you’ve read Witchbane, this is a wonderful sequel and mirror into where the characters stood immediately after the events of that novel.  Not shockingly, they are having issues.  Not talking and it’s ready to combust.  As written by Morgan Brice and narrated by the most wonderful Kale Williams, this story flies by.  It’s action packed, the characters alive and full of torn emotions.  As they should be.  I was so caught up in the story that it was over before I knew it.  As I said it’s a short story and the audio reflects that.

Witchbane is just one of the many interconnected series that Brice has right now.  There’s Witchbane, Badlands, t and the the new one , Treasure Trail.  All with interconnected characters that appear in each others stories and series. If you read one or listen to one, you find yourself getting sucked, quite willingly, into the overall universe Brice is building.  Read one?  Nope, have to read them all.  Or listen to them.  Which I am finding equally addicting under the spell of Kale Williams.

Which means I am recommending Burn the audio to you all, after you listen to Witchbane of course.  That was a terrific audio too.  Now to wait for Dark Rivers to arrive in audio.  Be still my heart!

Cover art works for the characters and tone of the story.  Love it.

When an international case involving a series of ritual murders lands in his lap, strait-laced and logical Agent Leon Armstrong is going to need some help.

Leon follows the trail to the opal-mining town of Coober Pedy, Australia, where he gets tangled up with the wild Russian mystic Sergei Menshikov. Despite his commitment to rationality, Leon discovers he isn’t immune to the way of the spirits, no matter how much he’d like to think so. When Sergei tells him he treads a predestined path, Leon’s world turns upside down.

Leon’s experiences in Coober Pedy will change his life forever, but can he hold out against Sergei and the spirits—who Sergei claims have chosen them for each other?

The Shaman of Kupa Piti.

Setup: Australian Federal Police agent Leon Armstrong enters Soda Bob’s pub to speak with the witness, Sergei Menshikov. The following is one of Leon’s ongoing lessons of the way of life in the mining town of Coober Pedy.

Excerpt

Someone yelled “Doris!” and every patron turned to look at the door and, with broad grins, began chanting “Dor-is, Dor-is, Dor-is.” There were a few heckles as well, with one man yelling out to ask whether there was a Doris Day available for some extracurricular activity.

Not understanding the jibe, Leon largely ignored it, but knowing it was a taunt of some sort, he smiled and gave a little nod as though bowing to his audience.

Glancing towards the bar, Leon met Sergei’s eyes. Sergei had twisted on his bar stool to watch their advance, a teasing eyebrow raised and a smirk on his lips. He turned back towards the bar.

When Charlie went to the left of Sergei and leaned on the bar, instead of moving to the other side of Charlie and using the big man as a buffer, Leon slipped in between the two. He wasn’t sure why.

The barman was about to speak when Sergei introduced them. Leon supposed it didn’t take a genius to guess they were here to see him.

“Soda Bob, you know local Doris, and this is federal Doris.” Sergei grinned.

“Doris?” Leon asked.

Soda Bob chuckled. “Did you ever watch A Country Practice?”

Leon gave it a moment’s thought and realised the pig in the TV show was named Doris. He turned to Sergei. “I guess that makes you Rasputin.”

Soda Bob’s brow drew down. “Wasn’t Rasputin mad?” he asked one of the patrons sitting to Sergei’s right.

“Mad as a meat axe,” the man with blinding white teeth confirmed.

Coober Pedy was relatively isolated, but was their knowledge of the outer world really that restricted? “He was a mad monk,” Leon offered.

The white-toothed man’s eyebrows shot up. “A monk? I didn’t know that.”

Leon glanced at Sergei who, seemingly ignoring the conversation, stared straight ahead, one hand loosely holding the stubby on the bar before him, the other grooming his beard.

“Nah, he wasn’t a monk.” The redhead who spoke had so many freckles they’d started joining up like overlaid dot-to-dot pages. He added uncertainly, “I don’t think.”

“I don’t know anything about him being a monk,” said Soda Bob, “but whoever gave Rasputin his blasting ticket should’ve been hauled over a bed of shit and left in the shade for the flies.”

His blasting ticket? What the fuck?

At that moment, Sergei turned and looked directly into Leon’s eyes, a smug eyebrow raised and a smile twitching on his lips as if to say, “Well, that went well for you, didn’t it?”

Given he was not in the habit of blushing, when the heat rushed to Leon’s face, it was like lava flowing through the blood vessels in his cheeks. Sergei’s hazel eyes pinned him to the spot like a bug to a board. Leon couldn’t look away, couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe. Sergei blinked, and the self-satisfied expression lightened to a teasing and playful gaze that was more captivating than the previous look had been paralysing.

Sergei turned his head away, but his eyes remained playfully on Leon until he was gazing out of their corners from beneath hooded lids. With another blink he looked ahead again.

“Yeah,” said White Teeth. “Tiny was lucky he wasn’t in his pit that day.”

Leon dragged his eyes from Sergei. What were they talking about? Oh yeah, Rasputin and his blasting ticket. Obviously the conversation had gotten away from him completely.

“The man was a menace with explosives,” Soda Bob assured Leon. “He blew up Norman’s washing machine.” He laughed. “It was said that if you wanted a pig to fly, you just had to leave it with Rasputin. He sent most things around him sky high sooner or later.”

Leon assumed Sergei’s soft chuckle was triggered by Soda Bob’s seemingly unintended pig pun.

“Lesson learned,” said Leon, acknowledging that he was the one receiving the education. “Rasputin was a crappy powder monkey.”

Stevie is sweet and shy—the only hint of an independent spirit comes from his lilac hair. For years he’s harboured a crush on his best friend, Adam, who is everything Stevie isn’t. The problem? When it comes to love, Adam is a bit slow on the uptake.

On top of that, Stevie fears the escaped killer known as Harlequin is targeting his friends, and clings to his role managing the merry-go-round for some semblance of normality. But someone is watching from shadows even the summer sun can’t penetrate.

Realising that life can be all too short, Adam takes steps to ensure that Stevie will be his. All his protective instincts kick in when Stevie attracts some unwanted—and very dangerous—attention, but he can’t take care of him alone. The group of friends needs to band together because the bright lights and whirling horses of the merry-go-round won’t be enough to keep Stevie alive. Some killers are far too good at hiding in plain sight.

Daniel Raynott has had his eye on Zach for some time. Now that Zach is no longer in his class at the university, he can act on his instincts and give Zach the guidance he desperately needs. As a Dom, Daniel demands obedience. As a man, he falls hard for Zach’s vulnerable innocence.

A boring summer has a lot of appeal, but Zach has about as much control over events as he does a trip down the helter skelter. He finds himself in danger more than once. Will Daniel be able to protect him or will the holiday season culminate in tragedy?

Excerpt 1 – 18+, from Helter Skelter

“Turn around,” Daniel said. “Bend over the bench.”

Zach stared at him. The expression he got in return was implacable.

“You can always use your safe word.”

Slowly, an internal debate raging in his mind about the wisdom of his actions, Zach did as he was told. The top of the bench cushioned his body. He shifted his feet wider apart for more stability. It felt strange to have his arms loose and dangling so he grasped the handle set in the side of the bench. He wondered if Daniel would tie him down and the thought made him grip the ring harder, palms sweating. When Daniel touched him, he gasped.

“Try to relax. We are going to take this as slow as you need. I’m not going to restrain you—you don’t even need to think about your safe word. You can just stand up and walk away if this gets too much.”

“If what gets too much, Sir?”

Daniel stroked his back, then his arse, resting his hand on the curve of his butt. “I’m going to paddle you, give you something else to think about other than your dad. The pain will focus your thoughts.” He undid Zach’s jeans then pushed them down to his thighs. “I’d prefer to do this with you naked but that might be a step too far for today.” Zach’s underwear went next, the fabric catching on his erection as Daniel rolled the cotton shorts down.

Zach trembled and his breathing sped up. He can see my arse. He’s going to spank it. Oh my God. The tip of his cock brushed the side of the spanking bench.

“Stunning.” Daniel stroked Zach’s backside. He pushed a finger between his cheeks to brush his hole and Zach’s mind blanked. “I’ll start slowly. The heat will build before it becomes painful.”

The first blow was little more than a tap. Zach sighed as Daniel built a rhythm, placing the strikes evenly on each arse cheek.

“Nice and pink now. Very pretty.”

The impact increased, creating a deep-seated ache. Zach clenched his glutes, craving more. As if sensing his need, Daniel landed a blow on the crease between arse and thigh. Zach sucked in his breath.

“Too much?”

“No, Sir. More please.” Zach lost himself in sensation as endorphins flooded his system. He humped the side of the bench, desperate for friction, and sobbed, overwhelmed by the revelation that he took pleasure from pain.

Winning the welterweight championship was everything Rake had worked for. Now it’s all come crashing down, and he has no choice but to flee his hometown of Las Vegas.

When he stops in a small town in Utah, Rake meets a man who makes him forget all about the danger he’s in.

Rio has a good life. He loves his family and career, but when Rake blows into town, something stirs in his blood.

Something like desire.

Rio doesn’t do relationships, not since the last disaster, but Rake makes it impossible for him to say no.

When Rake comes clean about what he’s running from, Rio just might have a way to help.

Now the two of them must fight to free Rake from the man who took everything…and stay alive until the end.

The Artist’s Boxer is the first book in the Yours to Protect series.

Excerpt

Reality crashed in as he lay down, and he didn’t like what it brought. He’d run away. Cowardly? Maybe. But what else was he supposed to do? People didn’t say no to Damian Corsetti, and that was exactly what Rake had done.

Now, there he was, in Rio Danvers’s home, his bed, after getting off twice with the man. The man who’d built the bar where he’d sat and laughed with Hunter for years.

Maybe it would all be okay. Deep inside, where he seldom looked, something told him it would be. He was solid and safe. Untouchable. But was that arrogance?

What had that figure in the road said? Love came in many forms, accept help…or something like that. Well, he sure as hell was. Rio had taken him in, fed him, kissed him, and invited him into his bed.

Rio came out of the bathroom and slid in next to him.

“Thanks for everything,” Rake said as they got under the covers. Rio wore sleep pants while he remained naked.

“Everything?”

“Bringing me here, feeding me, letting me stay. You don’t know anything about me.”

Rio stared at him until a soft expression came and went in his dark eyes. “You’re welcome.”

He got comfortable, and oh God, the bed was so nice. Rake burrowed deeper.

“About what happened in there,” Rio began.

His heart thudded, and Rake stilled. “What?”

“You kissed me. You know what this means?”

“What?” Rake asked again, his voice going up an octave.

“We have to go on at least two dates before we do anything else.”

Rake sprang up, taking the covers with him. “Are you serious?”

“Very. I told you, I have a rule.”

Rake pursed his lips. “So, if we’re going on a date, that means I can kiss you again.”

He leaned over to do just that, but Rio stopped him. “Not until after the first date.”

“Dude, seriously, what’s with all these rules? Don’t you ever go with the flow?”

“Go with the flow?”

“Uh, yeah.”

“You mean like meeting a stranger in town and bringing him to my home?” Rio asked, amused.

“Well…kind of—not really.” Rake scowled. “You know what I mean.”

Rio chuckled and pulled Rake down beside him. “Get some sleep. I’m always up early.”

He snapped off the light, but there was no bedside lamp.

“How did you do that?”

“There’s a button on the side of the bed. There’s one on your side too.”

“Oh, cool.” Rake searched around until he found it and pressed it on and off a few times.

He settled back and got comfortable again. His leg bumped Rio’s, and he threw it over him, hugging a pillow to his chest.

“ ’Nite,” he said around a big yawn.

“Good night.”

He liked not knowing what the hell time it was, or when he had to get up to train in the morning. He lived on a tight schedule Luis and Hunter set for him. When had his life become so rigid? He never had any free time. Even his downtime at Hunter’s bar had to be scheduled in.

“I like kissing you,” he whispered into the dark.

He wasn’t sure if Rio had already fallen asleep, but he didn’t answer

A MelanieM Release Day Review: The Shaman of Kupa Piti (Shaman’s Law #1) by A. Nybo

Standard

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

When an international case involving a series of ritual murders lands in his lap, strait-laced and logical Agent Leon Armstrong is going to need some help.

Leon follows the trail to the opal-mining town of Coober Pedy, Australia, where he gets tangled up with the wild Russian mystic Sergei Menshikov. Despite his commitment to rationality, Leon discovers he isn’t immune to the way of the spirits, no matter how much he’d like to think. When Sergei tells him he treads a predestined path, Leon’s world turns upside down.

Leon’s experiences in Coober Pedy will change his life forever, but can he hold out against Sergei and the spirits—who Sergei claims have chosen them for each other?

I find it fascinating when authors bring in the mythology of cultures I’m not familiar with into their stories.  It adds a depth to them, and elevates them to a level above those that, however lovingly, keep reverting to the same  well used  classical Greco-Roman mythology or even native  American Indian culture mashups I’ve read.

Here immediately I knew I was in for something totally different, unknown to me, and captivating.  In the often brilliant novel,  The Shaman of Kupa Piti (Shaman’s Law #1) by A. Nybo, the author  weaves into this murder mystery romance  an astonishing mixture of elements! All guaranteed to intellectually blow your mind, grip your heart, and keep you totally connected to this story and characters through every white knuckle page turning ride of a mystical narrative wowser.

For starters?  The location.  That would be Coober Pedy, Australia.  Look it up.  Or better don’t.  Because here, through the vivid, sometimes claustrophobic, hotter than hell itself, covered in red copper dust, descriptions, this tiny town of opal mining and life lived underground comes alive in these  pages.  So hot the heat feels incendiary and the dust itself choking.  And that’s just for starters.

Laid on top of that are the miners, and the townspeople of Coober Pedy.  An erasable and unique lot, made up of many nationalities of miners, each off alone at their own opal stake, men and women, tough as nails.  Forgetful of time passing down in those shafts deep underground.  And the author makes us feel it all …at a cellular level.  From the men in the only pub, again underground to the police.  And again layered on top of that is the mythology and culture of the native Aboriginals,  Also Aussie slang and colloquialisms.

But that’s not what I’m talking about, although that alone would make this story special.  Nope.

That’s setting the stage for local opal miner, Russian and mystic Sergei Menshikov.  Through this amazing and incredibly complex character, Nybo weaves elements such as the SAAMI/(Sa’mi) culture and mythology, Russian geography and slang, and mystical terms such as psychopomp which I had not seen used before.  All melded seamlessly while being used to great effect in this magnificent story.

Not enough?

Ok, let’s talk characters.  Starting with Sergei, at man at war… within himself. And with the spiritual plane for rejecting his heritage.  And another war is being brought to him as his past catches up.  He’s wild, thoughtful, mystical, larger than life, almost elemental.  And broken.  Sergei is unlike any other I’ve read before.  A wildman who’s impression still lingers even now.  Agent Leon Armstrong really grows on you, especially once he enters Coober Pedy and encounters the crime scene and Sergei.  As more of the case is revealed, the layers start to peel back on Leon too.  Yes, you believe Sergei when he says they are meant to be together.

And there’s Lucy (how i love her, I won’t spoil you meeting this character) and Charles.   Everyone here has such depth and lasting power to their personality.

That plot!  Scary, intriguing and yet, oh so spine-chillingly scary.  Especially as the author made it seem so real, so authentic.  My heart raced as the story paced practically screamed towards the finish.

Did I mention there’s going to be a second book?

When I finished this one, I wrote immediately to the author begging to know that a sequel was coming.  That these characters and universe wouldn’t be left to a single story.  I couldn’t fathom that.  And the answer was no, more would come.  Eventually.   That I could handle.

I will wait for however long it takes to come back here again with these people and this tiny township of heat, opals, and mystics.

After reading this you will feel the same.

The Shaman of Kupa Piti (Shaman’s Law #1) by A. Nybo is beautifully written, full of three dimensional characters, little known elements used for the author’s world building, and an amazing plot and setting.  I can recommend it highly enough.

Cover  art by Kanaxa.  Love the feel of the cover. You will never find someone as wild looking as Sergei.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Release Day Review: A Beautiful Disaster (Geek Life#3) by Marguerite Labbe

Standard

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Brendan and Dakota have been best friends ever since Brendan arrived at his new foster home and met Dakota, another foster who happens to be related to the foster family, and two brothers whose mom and dad are the fosters. Dakota and Brendan each have a wealth of baggage—figuratively, not literally—and ever since one night when a drunken teenage Dakota kissed Brendan, Brendan has been dreaming of more. Unfortunately, Dakota doesn’t remember that night, and he’s such a player, it’s unlikely he’d ever want to settle down with a boring geek like Brendan who lives his life one bullet point on his checklist at a time.

The two are like oil and vinegar—at least on the surface. Below the surface, even their friends can see the sexual attraction simmering. But that’s something Brendan will never act on because he promised his foster mother long ago that he would never engage in an inappropriate relationship with Dakota, and years later, he still feels the pull of that promise. But after Dakota moves in with Brendan and they begin work on the largest convention Brendan has ever pulled off, things change. Dakota begins to wonder what it would be like to settle down with the prickly, brilliant planner. Much of the book is a push-pull between the two—their sniping and arguments give them energy and increase their attraction. It’s so much fun to go along for the ride, especially when Dakota decides to try his hand at romancing Brendan and Brendan remains clueless.

The best part of this story is getting to know these two complex characters and watching their evolution from sniping siblings to two men who are finally fully committed to each other. It takes a while and there are a few segments in the story where I wanted them to hurry up, but in the long run, the slow build pays off. There are also quite a few visits with characters from the past two books and we get to be at Morris and Theo’s wedding and the nuptials for Felipe and Trask. Wedding lovers will be super happy with this story. And the proposal from Dakota to Brendan ranks among the best I’ve ever heard. The pressure is on. The con is coming together, or falling apart, depending on who you speak to, and Dakota is ready to finally settle down. Just how he manages to get Brendan to the altar is so worth the wait.

I totally love this series. All the characters—from MCs to secondary to the kittens Brendan and Dakota adopt—are wonderful, three-dimensional, engaging, and memorable. I highly recommend all three books.

The cover by Kanaxa features a handsome man in jeans and plaid shirt, dark-brown hair, light scruff— representing Dakota. Set against a bright-colored hot pink and yellow comic book style background, it fits beautifully with the rest of the series and the colors are definitely a plus to draw the eye.

A MelanieM Review: Here Comes the Son by Dahlia Donovan

Standard

Rating: 4.75 stars out  of 5

When evil stirs in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains, heroes come in both ordinary and extraordinary packages.

Ignatius Faber knows a few things for absolute certain. He’s half-demon, his father is the unequivocal prince of darkness, and demons want to destroy his city. And if he doesn’t make the first move on his crush, they’re never going to be anything more than a teenage fantasy that’s lasted into his thirties.

Lalo Pavia grew up hard and fast, orphaned at a young age. As an autistic, he’s learned to approach life cautiously. He throws his energy into gardening and photography—allowing both to provide a buffer between himself and the rest of the world.

Except for Iggy.

Can they find triumph, life, and even love in the middle of a city in flames?

Their fight for the mile high city has just begun

Well this was just superb!  Long a fan of Dahlia Donovan’s stories, her contemporary romances, her mystery cozies here springs a totally engrossing supernatural urban fantasy yarn so full of twist, turns and great characters that I was up until the wee hours reading until I was finished.

Yes, Here Comes the Son by Dahlia Donovan is a book whose characters I embraced and whose plot kept me guessing.

Don’t you love it when that happens?

Not only that but the relationships are so remarkable.  Starting with Ignatius Faber, aka Iggy,  and Lalo Pavia .  Their tight, bond and love for each other is so deep, compounded by Lalo’s autism and Iggy’s understanding of Lalo’s special needs and drive to insure that Lalo can live as best as possible within their universe, given his autism.  And it’s quite the universe.

Donovan has taken her time building a world full of demons, priests, levels at war with each other, scary scientists, and even Lucifer himself.  And none are exactly what you might think.  So many twists here that the plot at points resembles a maze of story threads and wandering possibilities.    None of which I will discuss, but the payoffs are tremendous as far as the narrative are concerned.

The author has built in depth everywhere you look. Layers to her characters.  She has certainly done her homework with regard to people with autism and it shows in Lalo’s character, mannerisms, and behavior.  Lalo is real!  And so is Iggy and his love and commitment to him.

The world building has just as many layers to meet this convoluted plot.  If I had any issues it’s that i  wanted more.  More of the characters, more of Lucifer, more  past the ending.  It’s that sort of story.  Your mind keeps racing past the ending into the thousands of “what ifs” the characters and story keep generating.

Here Comes the Son by Dahlia Donovan is a splendid example of how imagination and plot plus characters and worldbuilding send a novel soaring….it grabs your heart, messes with  your mind, and leaves you wanting more. How great is that?

Cover art is just wonderful.  Works for the character and novel.
