Roger is an adorable Christmas story. It’s not a traditional romance since most of the story is about Roger and Colt but we get to know them well, and when is time for love we can see how much they both deserve it.

This book is all about the holiday season, family, and loved ones. We get to see how much Colt needed someone there for him and how the little Feist filled that space in his heart. We cannot forget the well-meaning owner who noticed the connection between Roger and Colt and helps create their little family. It’s a romance after all.

Love, family, and a bit of fluff make this a perfect short for those who can’t stay away from a sweet story with a hint of romance.

A Lila Advent Release Day Review: Wreck the Halls (2017 Advent Calendar Daily – Stocking Stuffers) by Jessica Payseur

Business has been good at Paul’s Café in Madison, Wisconsin—until a few months before Christmas. When Nick opens Nick’s Restaurant next door, Paul watches his customers leave for cheaper food and an owner who smiles more. With his livelihood at stake, Paul lashes out, trying to drive away Nick’s customers, but Nick won’t go easy, and escalating sabotage threatens to ruin the holidays for both of them.

Paul thinks all he wants for Christmas is to see Nick’s Restaurant go under, but the more he tries to drive Nick away, the less he’s sure he wants him to go. Nick is everything Paul secretly craves, but by the time he realizes Nick is all he really wants for the holidays, he might have ruined any chance for them to get together. And there might not be a present in the world that can fix that.

Wreck the Halls is a cute enemies-to-lovers short story with a mix of Grinch and Scrooges. As Paul and Nick clash over the weeks, it’s easy to see why they try to outdo the other. And to understand why they loved their cafes so much.

Unfortunately, as with any short story, there are too many details left to the reader’s imagination. That’s without counting how fast they moved forward and talked about love. There are also some situations easily solve by simply talking instead of ignoring it.

Overall, it’s a quick read for those looking for a little Holiday cheer.

The cover by Brooke Albrecht is a bit simple but fitting for this story.

“What? I can’t take him. I have to get to work.”

Erin gave Colt a sympathetic smile. “I wish there was something I could do, but we can’t take him. We simply don’t have the room. I can give you a list of other rescue centers that may be able to take him. Unfortunately, the number of abandoned and surrendered animals increases this time of year.”

“That’s heartbreaking. It’s freezing out there, and no one should be alone for Christmas, not even a dog.”

“I totally agree with you.” Erin reached out and stroked the fur along Roger’s back. “It’s a good thing he found you.”

“Actually…. Never mind. Doesn’t matter.” He rattled off his number. “Please call me if you find his owner.”

Erin wrote down Colt’s number, then held out a pamphlet.

“What’s that for?”

“It’s the list of rescue centers.”

Colt studied it for a moment, then shook his head. “I’ll keep him.” Erin smiled broadly. “For now.”

“Like I said, it’s a good thing he… I mean, you found him.”

“Oh, hey, do you happen to have any leashes?” He held up the end of the rope. “This really doesn’t work when he’s in a hurry to pee.”

“Right there,” she said, pointing past Colt.

He turned to see a wall of colorful leashes, harnesses, and collars. He went and picked out a thin, light blue one, brought it back to the counter, and pulled out his wallet.

“That will be five dollars and thirty cents,” Erin informed him.

Colt pulled out a hundred dollar bill and handed it to her. “Just donate the rest to the shelter.”

“Thank you. That’s very generous of you.”

Colt attached the new leash to Roger’s collar. “Thanks for your help, Erin.”

“My pleasure and Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas,” Colt called back, then stepped outside. The instant they were out the door, Roger perked up. The trembling eased, and his tail began to wag.

Colt couldn’t blame him. He wouldn’t trust a place like that if he’d had his nuts cut off at one. He cringed at the idea. “Looks like we’re stuck with each other.” Roger licked his face, and Colt couldn’t help but laugh.

That night I stood freezing at Barton’s door, admiring Blue Cottage. The snow drifts piled on the lawn made the house look greeting-card perfect. I searched for a doorbell. Instead, a lion-headed knocker snarled at me. I grinned. Every house needed an intimidating guardian, right?

A man who looked about my age and height opened the door and slipped out, shutting it behind him. I was curious to see inside, but I got that the guy wanted his privacy. No problem.

“Hi. I’m Fen.”

He looked me over, then turned to the left along the shoveled porch. As he walked, he played with the keyring, bouncing a key in his hand. Did I make him nervous? If so, was that a good thing?

“This way.”

Okay. I took a breath and followed his pert ass and brisk steps as we rounded the porch to a steep staircase. From my brief glance at his face, he seemed okay. I was still slightly put off by his brusque manner. But hey, I reminded myself, I was renting from him, not fucking him.

In silence I followed him up to a small porch and a solid-looking back door, which he opened after only a little fumbling.

I was greeted by the stuffy, closed-up odor of a place long left undisturbed.

“You’d be my first renter. It’s furnished, but I can store anything you don’t want.” He made quick eye contact with me. The words erupted from him like I made him uncomfortable or something. Maybe it was my piercing and the tattoo, or maybe the hair color. I tried a smile, but he blushed and turned away, gesturing to the rooms.

Even though the air inside was chilly, I looked around and fell even more in love than I had when I’d first seen the house. The 1940s era furniture and knickknacks turned what could have been sterile rooms into my kind of home. I exhaled, letting the ambience settle in my soul as I wandered through a country kitchen, tiny dining room, sitting room, two bedrooms, and a classic bathroom, ending eventually at a circular tower room. I fell even deeper in love along the way as I touched the scratched kitchen table, a velveteen-covered parlor settee, a solid-looking four-poster bed, and the needlepoint-cushioned window seat in the tower.

If I were Barton, I’d charge thousands a month for this place. I prayed he wasn’t me and was relieved when my prayers were answered.

“You want to keep the furniture?” He still didn’t look at me as he bent over the kitchen table to fill out the rental agreement. Who needed him staring? I could live with letting his voice pour over me and seeing his kissable lips.

“I can’t imagine living here without all of it.” Or maybe even you, I thought, eyeing his pert butt wiggling at me as he wrote.

He stopped, stood, and eyed me for a few seconds before bending and going back to writing. I hadn’t said that about his butt out loud, had I?

As I was daydreaming about his ass and the scarred table, he stopped writing, looked over the form, and finally twisted it toward me. “Sign here, initial here, and date it. Then I need your rent for the month.”

I was signing before he changed his mind. The rent was ridiculously cheap. “No deposit?” There had to be a catch, right?

“No.”

I glanced up. He was gazing down at the table, or maybe at my hands. Or my groin? I signed as fast as I could and wrote a check to John Barton, the name on the rental agreement. So he had a first name, and we had a deal.

I drove back to my cousin’s house whistling. Within an hour, and with Beth and Kate’s help, I was moved in. Having only clothes and electronics made the move a one-trip job. Then I went food shopping for breakfast stuff and frozen dinners. We all celebrated by eating a late dinner outside town at a diner called the Rock Bottom Cafe. Renting a place with a wonderful kitchen hadn’t automatically taught me to cook.

Even with an enigma for a landlord, my life was perfect.

Author Bio

amie Fessenden is an author of gay fiction in many genres. Most involve romance, because he believes everyone deserves to find love, but after that anything goes: contemporary, science fiction, historical, paranormal, mystery, or whatever else strikes his fantasy.

Jamie Fessenden set out to be a writer in junior high school. He published a couple short pieces in his high school’s literary magazine and had another story place in the top 100 in a national contest, but it wasn’t until he met his partner, Erich, almost twenty years later, that he began writing again in earnest. With Erich alternately inspiring and goading him, Jamie wrote several screenplays and directed a few of them as micro-budget independent films. He then began writing novels and published his first novella in 2010. After nine years together, Jamie and Erich have married and purchased a house together in the wilds of Raymond, New Hampshire, where there are no street lights, turkeys and deer wander through their yard, and coyotes serenade them on a nightly basis.

Jamie recently left his “day job” as a tech support analyst to be a full-time writer.

A Jeri Review: New Hand (Bluewater Bay #23) by L.A. Witt

This installment of the Bluewater Bay series was a great read. There were touches of serious, but a lot of fun as well.

Jesse was one of my favorite types of character. Broken on the inside but putting up a facade of strength. He was hurt one too many times and because of that he is wary. But he can’t stop flirting with the new bartender in town, Garrett. Even though Garrett is definitely older and closed off.

Jesse and Garrett had great chemistry. Their flirting banter was fun to read. But Jesse is scared to disclose his HIV status and Garrett is scared to lose another lover. With Garrett being older, the story really touched on his experiences of HIV in the 80’s and 90’s. Before the advances in medicine when he just watched friends die. He is open to understanding more- his head says HIV is no longer a death sentence, but his heart can’t forget his husband.

The story also touches on how many younger people are completely out of touch with HIV. Too many haven’t educated themselves as to the risks- or virtual non-risk- involved when you are with someone positive. I had heard that before (in real life) and was kind of shocked that so many of the younger generation (good god I sound old!) are so clueless.

Anyway, back to the story. There were excellent supporting characters, most of whom we had met in previous installments of this series. They absolutely added to the story and served and good wake up calls to both men.

If you are a fan of the Bluewater Bay series, or of L.A. Witt, definitely read this one.

A MelanieM Review: Why I Left You by Colette Davison

Brett has fooled himself into thinking he’s happy in his dead-end job. His idea of commitment is a string of quick hook-ups, which never last a whole night.

Jamie left home to prove he could cope alone, without the suffocating support of his parents. But instead of finding freedom, he’s struggling with university, money, and depression.

Drawn together by an undeniable spark, their relationship won’t survive the present, unless they can come to terms with the past.

Why I Left You by Colette Davison has a much deeper, complicated storyline than indicated by that short synopsis. Well written and layered, Why I Left You deals with the more serious themes of depression, the impact of media use and teenagers, and suicide. That the discussions for these topics are framed out around a halted romance between Brett and Jamie works beautifully to deliver an emotional punch as well as let the reader into some of the issues that a person with depression deals with on a daily basis.

By necessity Why I Left You is told from both the pov of Jamie and Brett because at the beginning the question of what exactly is wrong with Jamie is up in the air. You are as in the dark as Brett. Then the author moves us through Jamie’s thoughts and actions and it quickly becomes clear. For Brett? It takes longer.

At times this will be a tough book to read. If suicide and depression are triggers for you, you might reconsider reading this story. I will say that Colette Davison treats Jamie’s depression responsibly, complete with doctors and a treatment that includes medication over a long term and no instant cure.

Where does this leave the romance? Still smack in the middle as both Brett and Jamie try to reconnect and figure out what it all means. Again a nice realistic and authentic relationship. The book ends on a wonderful note of hope and love and so much promise of the future for them both, especially after what the past held.

I loved Why I Left You by Colette Davison and recommend it.

Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: New Hand (Bluewater Bay #23) by L.A. Witt

I avidly looked forward to grabbing this book as I’ve been a fan of the series from day one. Since this author penned the first in the series and I knew this would be the last of Bluewater Bay, I had high hopes of an outstanding story, sort of an e-book “wrap party,” so to speak.

Unfortunately, though it was good, neither of the two MCs worked on the Wolf’s Landing TV production, and to be honest, I never could figure out why the book was named New Hand. It was just one of those things that drove me a bit crazy with distraction. And now, as I’m writing this review, it dawns on me that the phrase may have something to do with the card game, Magic, that the MCs played with several of the key players from previous stories. Or maybe it’s a play on the fact that Garrett was dealt a “new hand” after the death of his beloved husband, Sean. In any event, it’s not a title that is descriptive of the story, IMHO.

Garrett Blaine moved to Bluewater Bay to get a new lease on life after his husband of three years died of cancer. Torn apart by grief, everything in Seattle reminded him of his sweet, affectionate husband, including his job, since they were coworkers. Taking on the new role of a bartender might be the best thing for him so he can hear other people’s problems and not focus on his own.

And in walks Jesse Connelly, the young shop assistant we met in Outside the Lines. Jesse’s friend-with-benefits date has just stood him up and he’s pretty upset because he recently shared his HIV positive status with the young man, and now the guy won’t even kiss him. Though he doesn’t share that with Garrett, the two do talk, and talk, and talk. Sexy Garrett is fifteen years older than Jesse and that pleases Jesse just fine. Immediately attracted, and yet knowing this conversation is not a hookup, Jesse fails to share his status. That turns out to be a mistake when the two bump into each other again and hit it off again. In fact, the sexual chemistry is flaming—this is L.A. Witt, remember!

To make a long story short, there is a big misunderstanding, as expected, but it’s mostly because Garrett goes right back to his loss of Sean when he hears Jesse’s story. In fact, much of the story deals with Garrett’s grief and loss. It’s very well done, sensitive, and respectful of the man who died less than a year ago. The author takes us into Garrett’s psyche as he works through his grief and acknowledges his love for Sean before slowly beginning to share photos and experiences with Jesse. Jesse is a wonderful partner for Garrett—totally accepting that Sean is a part of his life now and will be for quite some time. He offers the friendship, love, and support that Garrett needs.

Though the story is long, and there is indeed a great deal of focus on Sean’s loss, there’s also a lot of fun times—and sexy times—with Jesse, and there’s a few scenes with Levi and Carter, Hunter and Kevin, principal characters of the series, in which they all gather together to play Magic, a card game about which I am no longer clueless since the author spent quite a few pages explaining the game.

Jesse was a wonderful character with a bright, fun personality. And because of his status, there is a lot of information about HIV in this story, especially updated info on HIV treatment and partner risk as well as about partners taking Truvada.

In summary, there was a lot of page time devoted to grief recovery, and sometimes it got very depressingly bogged down. There was also lots of info on Sean, so much so, he was a virtual third MC. And though I loved Jesse, he sometimes felt too good to be true in how well he adapted to being with a grief-stricken Garrett. And—this is L.A. Witt!–there was honestly a lot of sex—in fact, almost too much. The sex scenes didn’t hold my interest after a while and I breezed through them.

Overall, I’m a bit disappointed in this last story of the series, and looking back, I realize that it’s primarily because I expected so much. It was good but It just wasn’t outstanding. Do I recommend it? Definitely, because many readers love this theme of grief-comfort, and of course, age gap romance. And the series? Not to be missed—written by various authors—some books were outstanding, some average, but all bound by the Bluewater Bay setting and the Wolf’s Landing TV production. I am definitely going to miss traveling to western Washington to get my fix of all these memorable characters.

What traits do you find the most interesting in someone? Do you write them into your characters?

I love a sense of humor – maybe not a good sense of humor, but a sense of humor, and I think you can find that in almost all my characters.

I’m also a huge fan of believing in something. You know that old adage, if you don’t believe in something then you’ll fall for everything? I think you can see that in my characters, over and over.

Have you ever had an issue in RL and worked it through by writing it out in a story? Maybe how you thought you’d feel in a situation?

*snort* I am the queen of working my shit out in a book. Leaving Texas, my sight failing, being chronically ill. I let the characters talk out my problems for me. When my son had cancer, I wrote Say Something to cope with all eventualities.

With so much going on in the world today, do you write to explain? To get away? To move past? To widen our knowledge? Why do you write?

Honestly? I write because I have faith. I believe in forever. I believe in happily ever after. I believe in soul mates. I believe that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I believe that love will overcome.

Holy shit. Jamie was kissing him. Brett’s head told him to back off and walk away, but his body remembered those lips and how much he’d once enjoyed having them pressed against his own. His body wanted to lean into the kiss and respond with four years’ worth of regret. For a few precious moments, he let himself give in to desire. His heart hammered against his ribs, desperate to escape his body and reclaim what it had lost. His fingers tingled as he wrapped an arm around Jamie’s shoulders and held him tightly, his thumb making small circles on Jamie’s shirt.

Then his brain kicked into gear again. What the fuck was he doing? This was the guy who had ripped his heart out in the worst possible way. Besides, Jamie was clearly at least half-gone. What they were doing was a mistake at best.

He pulled away, breathing heavily as he stared at Jamie, whose pupils were blown wide.

“You’re drunk,” Brett said in the most matter-of-fact tone he could manage.

Jamie curled his upper lip and turned away, shaking his head. It was dumb for Brett to follow him, but he did it anyway. They’d been best friends long before they’d realised they were attracted to each other. Brett had always looked out for Jamie, back when they’d lived next door to each other. Those instincts kicked in.

“Let me walk you home.”

Jamie stopped and rounded on him, fists clenched, teeth gritted. “Don’t pretend you give a shit.”

About the Author

Colette’s personal love story began at university, where she met her future husband. An evening of flirting, in the shadow of Lancaster castle, eventually led to a fairy tale wedding.
