Review: Space Deputy (Interstellar Sheriff #1) by Jenny Schwartz

Rating: 4⭐️

Jenny Schwartz, especially her recent work, is an auto read for me. Her world building is detailed, fascinating and imaginative. And her universe is filled with characters that are memorable even if their roles are ones that are secondary in nature, or even just narrative beautifully crafted flashes of beings that make indelible impressions.

More often than not, these are AI beings, or beings other than humans who capture the reader’s attention and engage with their emotions.

It’s Harry the Mech and the Interstellar ship, the Lonesome, with their own stories and secrets. I adore them.

Thelma Bach, the outrider from a mining planet who naively thought she’d overcome the prejudices against her “kind” is a terrific character. I really wanted to know more about her planet, upbringing, the type of society that raised someone like her and her brother Joe.

This is an area of background I wish Schwartz had explored more. Because the prejudice against “Rockers”, their sort of unique accent is mentioned frequently and a historical context is required here.

The masterpiece of the story is the universe building, the types of chemistry, minerals and asteroids mining that’s going on. And how some of the different elements are used in this world. And exploited. By companies, governments and sought after by interstellar pirates.  The political system and layers of bureaucracy seem very realistic and credible.

Back to the main characters. Thelma who’s in an awful position at the beginning of the book is a resourceful woman. And I appreciate that about her.

What’s not credible about this book is the romance. It’s a no spice, no chemistry, and imo, ‘where’s the time to actually set up any relationship between them’ sort of romantic dynamic. Blink and they are spouting feelings of love. Without any reason for it. She had no idea. But ok let’s go with it.

And that’s an issue. Because Thelma is trying to adjust to a new world, new people in whatever form they make take, new jobs including one she’s trying to create for herself, and several galactic or interstellar missions to answer as a newbie.

So why push a credible woman character into a relationship with her boss , flag of unequal power issues, (who isn’t as multi dimensional a personality as she is) in the first book. Whenever Max appears in a scene, all I see is a generic bland male character. For one who is supposed to be a ex-soldier, dangerous etc, the character comes across as none of those things. I’m thinking he’s my grandmother’s soap operas lead. Not good.

So the women characters are well done. The romance aspect is puzzling. The world building is everything. Love the supporting cast of characters. Especially the diner owner. Love her!

It’s intriguing enough that I’m going on. It’s a quick read. Which is another win for it.

Welcome to the Saloon Sector, Deputy!

Thelma Bach graduated top of her class after four years at the Galactic Justice academy. But she’s a Rock Sector citizen. She was a fool to believe the core worlders would ever allow her to beat them at their own game. She’s been assigned to serve her seven years as a deputy in the Saloon Sector. The message for the Federation’s out-world citizens is clear: you’ll never be our equal, so don’t even try.

The core worlders chose the wrong person to push around.

Assigned to the despised frontier, Thelma will get her revenge even if she has to subvert a sheriff with a mysterious background (one who served with her Star Marine brother – will she be a baby sister forever?), charm artificial intelligences, fight bandits and negotiate with aliens.

It’s not a question of whether Thelma will survive her exile, but whether the Saloon Sector will survive her!

Review: A House By Any Other Name by Jenny Schwartz

Rating: 4.5⭐️

The second of author Jenny Schwartz’ Hidden Sanctuary series, A House By Any Other Name is my favorite of the two novels.

Both tales take place in the fabulous Uncertain Sanctuary universe but only this story is directly related to the characters in that series. And that immediately gives A House By Any Other Name added depth and detail missing from Any House in a Storm.

This story is filled with engaging, intriguing characters, some of which we’ve met before. Like Hector who is the disgraced brother of Evander, cyborg Elf and partner to Sorcerer Kira (Uncertain Sanctuary trilogy).

But Schwartz has also created a great character in Raisa, who’s fully grounded in a wealth of other characters and rich in her own history. She’s a strong personality, certain of her own abilities and her goals.

The revelation of the fact she’s a sorcerer isn’t much of a surprise, but the real joy is her sentient house. As each is created by the sorcerer themselves, they spring from an emotional source of that sorcerer. Raisa’s house is totally unique and unexpected. A aspect of this story I didn’t expect and loved.

And it happily is part of a successful twist at the end of the story. Another element that just made this story even more special for me.

The plot and storylines are ones that keep one absolutely invested in the characters journey and outcome. The romance is slow and credible between these two intelligent powerful people.

I just wish Schwartz would have more than one story to explore their journey going forward. They are that interesting.

I’m highly recommending this story and the Uncertain Sanctuary trilogy it’s related to.

Reality is a complicated multiverse of many species and rare magic. Diplomats are the official envoys and investigators who hold the Union of Worlds together.

Raisa never intended to be a diplomat. Like so many things in her life, it was her stepmother’s idea.

Hector is an elf in disgrace. He chose his cyborged brother over his lying, abusive family. Elves revile augmented people. They leave such despicable technology to their ancient enemies, the goblins.

When a diplomatic mission strands the two elves on a goblin world they find themselves the target of a legendary killer. If they die, so will the emergent species they were sent to save.

A House By Any Other Name is a stand alone novel in the Hidden Sanctuary series. It includes characters from the Uncertain Sanctuary trilogy. No previous knowledge of Reality is necessary to enjoy the adventure.

Review: The Sundered Realms (Sundered Realms: Book 1) by Casey Blair

Rating: 4.5⭐️

I find Casey Blair to be a wildly imaginative writer. She’s incredibly inventive in her ability to craft a variety of detailed magical systems and then have her fantasy characters use those  systems their magic. In beautifully plotted scenarios that capture our own imagination and connect us to the universe she’s building.

Liris, the main character and sole voice of the story, is a brilliant desperate woman. She’s been essentially “locked” away for her entire life, trapped into training that’s a literal dead end.

This is the story of her escape. How, by the force of her courage, desperation and self control, moves to change the world. And her magical power.

The other characters, especially the important spellcaster Lord Vhannor, is still a bit of a mystery here. I do wish this had been a two person POV instead. I think that extra character detail and depth of vision would have made this even better.

But there’s so much exploration to lay out and depth of world building to achieve that I could see that a single person perspective would be a good way to achieve that.

The relationship between Liris and Vhannor is fairly quick and straightforward (an example of where the 2-person POV would be helpful) but given Liris’ personality understandable.  Also this is a “spicy” book, more so than some of the author’s other works. Yes, there’s sex scenes.

The second story belongs to another character from this book. So this seems to conclude their main romance.

I’m highly recommending this, great plot, fantastic storytelling and a strong woman character.

However, the magical system is a rich mixture of elements that takes time to build up throughout the story and with each character. It’s highly effective but not an aspect that’s rushed.

Looking forward to the next book.

Book 1 of 1: Sundered Realms

Blurb

Liris has always been too dangerous to be allowed freedom.
Now she’s the universe’s only hope.

Liris has been trapped training as an elite spy her whole life. But when her elders try to sacrifice her to further their own interests, she escapes through a secret portal—only to land right in the hands of Lord Vhannor, the most dangerous spellcaster in the universe.

Vhannor has dedicated his life to defending the universe from world-devouring demons, and Liris, with her unique knowledge of an ancient spell language, jeopardizes his mission. But when she uses it to help him close a demonic portal before it can destroy all life in that dimension, he’s forced to acknowledge he needs her by his side.

As they race between dimensions to fight their mutual enemies, they discover a plot that will leave every remaining realm in the universe at the mercy of demons. But to stop it, Liris will have to rely on the man whose icy gaze sees right through her… and when even her own people betrayed her, how can she trust Vhannor to stand by her when she risks the whole universe?

The Sundered Realms is a steamy romantic epic fantasy in a world where being a huge nerd about language makes you incredibly epic at magic. This is an action-packed story about an interdimensional combat ambassador heroine and the most dangerous man in the universe devoting all his attention to making her unstoppable.

Review:  Rogues Lie (Caldryn Parliament Book 3) by Jenny Schwartz

Rating: 5 ⭐️✨

Jenny Schwartz’s Caldryn Parliament series is one of those series where the books just get more brilliant and more highly complex as the series progresses.  The writing, the incredible characters, and this labyrinthine storytelling is beyond amazing.

The formidable character of Vanda Kavanagh, Warden of Caldryn Parliament, is one of the most compelling, powerful portraits of a woman who is secure with herself, her intelligence, integrity and her ability to navigate the intricacies of intergalactic politics, hundreds of years of internalized/weaponized familial legacies and the current cultural environment.  All to further the ideals and hidden plans she’s been formulating all along.

Vanda isn’t flashy or dramatic. She’s controlled, a knife of a woman, in flawless grey colors, forming alliances and brilliantly devising scenarios to forward her ideas and plans for progress and protection of the Realm. Schwartz , with incredible craft, builds this magnificent character and then allows the reader to watch , in intriguing detail, as she continues her labyrinthine path towards her goals and own individual development. It’s a journey that is impossible to begin and then stop without seeing it through. The twists and unexpected changes in plot are fabulous. And  continue to the end.

What a character and series!

There’s a no spice romance that’s evolving from friendship into a something more. Just a fantastic science fiction thriller, multiple magical mysteries, a cast of incredibly powerful multidimensional characters, and enough hidden political agents and agendas for a number of galaxies.

Vanda Kavanagh, the Warden of Caldryn Parliament, has fast become one of my all time favorite characters.

There’s no way to go about describing the complexities and depths of world politics here that Schwartz has and continues to craft. Utterly brilliant. Contains science fiction, magical systems, mythology and more. And it all works perfectly alongside political and military power dynamics.

To follow this character of Vanda in her increasingly complex journey, the reader must absolutely start with the first book and continue reading forward. But the path is full of action, mental agility, politics and scheming but never at the expense of forgetting about the human factor. A fantastic series on every level.

The only drawback? Waiting until the next book is released.

Review:  All Fun and Games (The Case Files of Henri Davenforth Book 11) by Honor Raconteur

Rating:  5✨⭐️

All Fun and Games is the penultimate book and it’s a fantastic read. As Honor Raconteur gets closer to the series finale next year, the characters are more settled in their respective roles and relationships. That’s never been more satisfying and clear than seeing Jamie and Henri finally engaged and preparing for their wedding and future plans.

Jamie’s Queen’s Own are functional and adding to their numbers and the core group we’ve gotten to know so well.   And that brings us to this complicated series of murders that Jamie, Henri and the Queen’s Own must investigate.

Cruel, seemingly unrelated, and yet Jamie can feel there’s something tying these horrifying acts together.

Alongside the investigations, the couple are moving forward with their new life together. Looking for new housing, and oncoming nuptials.

There’s wonderful twists and heartbreaking turns. And a lovely little end.

The last book in the series will be published next year and I look forward to seeing how Jamie and Henri‘s remarkable journey comes to a close.

Highly recommended.

No sexual content. A sweet kiss, nothing more. Magical energy, crime investigation and science fiction. Terrific work.

This is Honor Raconteur also known as AJ. Sherwood.  A must read no matter what name she’s writing under.

Review: Review: Uncharted Grounds (Maya’s Blog’s Book 3) by Lara McKenzie

Rating: 4.75⭐️

Uncharted Grounds, the third book in Maya’s Blog’s series is indeed uncharted territory for the characters here.

Lara McKenzie’s format of having her character, Maya, chart her growth and  life events through a Blog that’s grown substantially from 5 readers to a inter species paranormal readership of millions , including ones she now includes as friends and found family, has become a stunning journey of inspiring personal growth and self discovery.

But it’s a realistic one, full of painful and awful moments of despair and even death. Those have been equally terrifying and tragic for Maya and those around her.

And this deals with the consequences of that event, the aftermath, and the unexpected repercussions that it will bring upon Maya’s relationship with her shadow demon warrior fiancée.

There are hilarious scenes, terrifying moments, utter heartbreak, and solemn moments of thoughtful reflection upon her own experiences and past history that make her look at her current situation and how she feels about going forward.

I can’t say enough about how much I love this beautifully written series about Maya and her journey through her new life , her friends and how she has grown up and dealt with each new challenge she’s faced.

While this is a fantasy/science fiction universe, the parallels to a contemporary world are very real and heartfelt. And often heartbreaking.

Keep your tissues close by.

This is a deeply personal and emotional story that connects with each reader in differently.

Highly recommended.

Love these covers with their specific topics, this one being Genevieve who had a big role here.

Review:  Sanctuary (Roman’s Chronicle’s) by Ilona Andrews

Rating: 4.5⭐️

“Hang on. I stuffed all my feelings down like a proper man, and it takes some effort to bring them back up.”

Yes! It’s time for some more great Ilona Andrews writing team and diving back into the Kate Daniels universe with Sanctuary, a book about Roman, the Black Volhv, a reoccurring character from the main series.

This is a holiday season story where Roman is “holed” up in his remote cabin, trying to ride out the season when it’s interrupted by a mysterious, badly hurt young man and his puppy asking for sanctuary.

This story turns out so differently than I expected, which I loved. The twists, the fact that I thought it was headed one way but the authors always had a totally unexpected path for the characters made this story deeply interesting and moving.

Roman’s character is explored in multiple ways in the story. His magical connections with his god and how his magic is fused with the creatures and structures around him is so believable and vivid. And much more interesting, Roman’s background is gone into greater detail .Roman’s complicated family dynamics and his relationship with his father are explained through important conversations and scenes with various characters.

The mythology and gods that impact the story are fascinating and always make me want to research more into each culture and myths surrounding them.

Sanctuary is a one of one series. I don’t expect any more. But I’m thrilled to have this one.

It’s not really a standalone book but one that fits within a wider collection of stories, the Kate Daniels universe. That’s a fabulous place to start as well as one I highly recommend.

Now elite mercenaries are camped out on his property, combat mages are dousing the house with fire, and strange priests are unleashing arcane magic. They thought Roman was easy pickings, just a hermit in the woods, but they chose the wrong dark priest to annoy. For while Roman might be patient, he is the Black Volhv, filled with the love of his terrible god. For his adversaries, it’s a fight to the death, but for him, it’s just another day in the neighborhood.

Review: Brew Diligence (Maya’s Blog’s Book 2) by Lara McKenzie

Rating: 5⭐️+

“I’ve had some revelations since moving into my own place:

-Living alone means no witnesses to my weirdness, which is empowering until you accidentally flood the kitchen while making noodles.  Fairy lights are an emotional support infrastructure.  -There is no middle ground between I am thriving and I just organised my socks by emotional damage level.  -There is no such thing as too many mugs.”

From Maya’s Blog, readership is now climbing up to the millions.

When we last saw Maya, she’d left her abusive family and finally gotten the one room apartment that she had wanted, decorated with fairy lights and a coffee mug. Safe. But Gary the Grim Reaper who had helped saved her from the serial killer was missing, presumably because he violated his own laws.

Brew Diligence, a book of endless quotable sentences and incredibly moving moments, follows the same perfect format and flow of the first book. Maya, our brave woman barista continues to blog about her experiences to her followers who became her friends and family.

From 5 to millions, chapters of her moving forward, overcoming some huge challenges with hilarious stories and enormous amounts of pain and anxiety. And bravery.

Now she and her friends who are also her colleagues are in the midst of the fight to free Gary the Grim Reaper from his prison sentence for helping her escape from the serial killer.

Gary, another fabulous character, is missing not from the story but from the hole he left behind in the close relationships he formed. Plus his ghost cat, too, who left behind, is ruling the apartment at Maya’s.

There’s so much trauma and emotional scars here in this story. It’s balanced by the author’s carefully crafted humor and sensitivity to the subject matter and scenes.  Hilarity and horror. Love and hate. Death and rebirth.

Despair and hope.  It’s brilliant and brutal that all these things exist within this universe, these characters and their stories.

Is this really only the second book? Surely not.  I’m astonished at the fact that this is so amazing on every level of excellence.

Yes, highly recommended. If I had more stars in the rating, they’d be there. So many stars!

Love this so much! Including the covers.

Review:  All In A Name (The Case Files of Henri Davenforth Book 9) by Honor Raconteur

Rating:  5✨⭐️

In a series full of just outstanding books and incredible writing, this ranks among the top.  There’s several reasons but high among them are the way that Raconteur has handled Jamie’s PTSD and reoccurring trauma from her past torture and kidnapping at the hands of the dark witch Belladonna.

That’s a huge element of this book as murder victims are delivered directly to Jamie’s door and the villain seems to have direct ties to the deceased Belladonna.

Great suspense, high magical energy and action! We get a new fantastic character in Chanty! New “old “ inventions. And waiting for Henri to still pop the question. More suspense.

No spice at all. Just mild kisses and on to more action. Fantastic characters and mysteries, some of which are built around actual obscure real cases.

Highly recommended. Highly addictive.

Review:  One Fell Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles Book 3) by Ilona Andrews

Rating: 5⭐️

This is absolutely one of my favorite series and yes, I’ve finished the what books have been released in this series to date. I’m just trying to get caught up on my reviews.

This is just one more fabulous binge read series by the prolific (and truly amazing) husband and wife team known as Ilona Andrews.  One of three their series that have me hooked, including one that was just recently released.

Special elements that really struck me and made this book so much more memorable is how the authors both managed to explore further into the universe and new planets as well as introduce the readers to Dina’s family members we haven’t met yet but have heard about. And have it happen in truly dramatic and exciting scenes.

And it will set up a new couple and their own important storyline for a future book/series.

And that’s not even the main plot line here. That’s one that focuses on a species that’s been hunted to the brink of extinction and it’s up to the Innkeepers and the Gertrude Hunt to save them all from those aliens hunting them.

That’s the powerhouse of narrative themes and one that’s written beautifully here. It’s moving, poignant and compelling storytelling .

Books and series like this is why I’m so reader focused on this writing couple.  I haven’t even finished their published books yet and they released another one I can’t stop thinking about.

Yes, to this. Yes to all of this series. And finally, to all Ilona Andrews has written to date. Just go with it.

Highly recommended.
