A Barb the Zany Old Lady Advent Release Day Review: The Puzzle Box (2017 Advent Calendar Daily – Stocking Stuffers) by C.C. Bridges

Standard

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

This was a delightful short holiday story in which Cole, artist and elementary art teacher, is not looking forward to the Christmas holiday this year because his lover and best friend, James, is a soldier deployed overseas.  I was immediately able to relate to this, having had a family member deployed in a war zone over the holidays thirteen years ago.

Cole at least has his BFF, Liz, to keep him company and to nag him into eating and shopping, two things that are way too boring without James.  When Cole receives a box from James in early December, it takes him a short time to figure out that James is going to lead him on a Scavenger Hunt to what will ultimately be his best Christmas present ever!  Along the way, though, there are stops at locations where the two men had firsts: first kiss, first dinner after moving in together, etc.

As I stated earlier, this one is delightful.  I’m impressed by this author who is new to me.  The characters are well developed, the plot is thoughtful and interesting, and the ending is everything I would hope for in a holiday romance.  I highly recommend this stocking stuffer to all lovers of MM romance and if you have a spot in your heart for those serving their country away from home, this one is perfect to lift your spirits.

The cover by Paul Richmond is the standard Dreamspinner Press Advent Calendar art—bright and and cheerful.

A Barb, the Zany Old Lady Advent Story Review: Home Is Where the Christmas Trees Are by CJane Elliot

Standard

Rating: 5 stars out of 5          ★★★★★

Sleigh Ride Advent StoryDex Crawford has moved into his sister Jan’s condo to become the guardian for her daughter, Rowan, after Jan’s death. A physical therapist who does home visits, he’s able to do his documentation from home at the end of the day so he can accommodate his neice’s schedule.  Twelve-year-old Rowan is typical of girls that age, and though unhappy, seems to love Dex, and they get along well.

When Rowan’s clarinet is stolen just before a concert, Dex accompanies her to the band room to ask the music teacher if she can borrow one.  There he meets Ed Alcott, son of one of his clients, and a man he feels he already knows based on what Mrs Alcott has said about him.  Though he can’t tell Ed he’s met his mother, he can extend a warm hand in friendship, and the two men feel the sparks fly as they greet each other.

Love at first sight? Why not?  Ed brings Christmas into Dex’s cold and lonely heart as Rowan is away spending the holidays with her grandmother.  Dex is shocked by how quickly he and Ed seem to get to know each other and how close they become within only forty-eight hours.

This story left me with a big smile on my face as the two characters who so richly deserve each other find their happiness together.  The main and secondary characters were very well developed in such a short story, and the story itself is very believable.  I highly recommend this one to add some cheer to your Christmas holidays.

A Barb, the Zany Old Lady Advent Story Review: Holiday Hotel Hookup by Jeff Adams

Standard

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

Sleigh Ride Advent StoryWhen IT consultant, Marty, checks in at the hotel in Dallas where he’ll be spending a working vacation over the holidays, little does he know that one of the benefits actually greets him at the front desk.  Checking his phone before bed that night, he’s intrigued by a few local offers from Manhunt, a hook-up app he’s downloaded to his phone. One turns out to be the gorgeous man who checked him in, the hotel’s assistant manager, Jose, aka JJ.

Though they don’t get to hookup that night, they do get together the next night and discover they have a lot in common.  They end up spending more time together, including a gaming marathon with Marty’s friends on Christmas Day, during which JJ does some distracting and erotic things to Marty while he’s trying to play.

The author has created two very loveable characters who fit well together, and I enjoyed the witty banter and fun-loving escapades in and out of the bedroom.  The story ends with a hope for a bright future as these two career-oriented men face the realities of continuing a relationship and decide it’s worth the try.  I would love to see this story developed into a novel.  The characters were great and the possibilities endless.
