A Lila Audiobook Review: Duke in Hiding by M.J. O’Shea and Rusty Topsfield (Narrator)

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Duke In HidingEvery gentleman has something to hide.

Meeting Heath Blackwood, a gorgeous English farmer, is probably the most exciting thing to ever happen to small-town landscaper Theo Brody, who has lived in quiet Maplehurst, New Hampshire, all his life. The sexy and secretive Brit shakes the foundations of his orderly world as they are swept up in a springtime romance neither can resist.

But Heath’s secrets run deeper than Theo ever imagined. He’s actually Heathcliff Pierrepont Blackwood, Duke of Kingston, in hiding from recent death threats. Suddenly there’s more separating them than the Atlantic Ocean, and Theo doubts he’ll ever fit in with English nobility. Though Heath and Theo are opposites in almost every way, their love might bridge the gap—if they’re willing to take the risk.

Duke in Hiding is a lovely friends-to-lovers story with a fairy tale twist. It’s a slow burn account of two men from two different worlds coming together to enjoy the simplicity of life in a small American town.

Heath comes to Maplehurst, NH to hide after receiving death threats. He’s the Duke of Kingston but is assuming the identity of a British farmer to avoid recognition. There isn’t much to do in town but his luck changes when he meets Theo Brody, a landscaper moonlighting as a bartender.

The night a brooding Brit entered the bar he worked part-time, Theo found him infuriating, but the more time they spent together, the more they learned how much they had in common. Through their daily meetings and following dates, we get to see how their relationship developed into true love. They had great chemistry, and their friendship was the base of their relationship.

There’s a lot happening in this story and more characters than necessary. Even when I enjoyed the story, I think it has a pacing problem. Some parts are too slow, and others are taken care with a line or two. We get unnecessary details through the story. And areas, where the reader might want to know more, were ignored.

Perhaps a little less time learning about plants and more getting to see more of the story resolution would have given this book a higher rating.

Rusty Topsfield did an excellent job making both main characters realistic. The author did create two distinct men, rooted in their countries’ characteristics and the narration helped the overall enjoyment of Heath’s and Theo’s relationship. All the secondary voices were spot on and gave the story a deepness that only reading couldn’t accomplish.

Paul Richmond’s cover matches the rest of the Dreamspun Desires series and the cover model fits Heath’s description.

A MelanieM Review: Undercover Boyfriend (One Fine Day #1) by Jacob Z. Flores

Rating: 5 Stars out of 5

Undercover BoyfriendTwo men, one lie, and a whole bunch of trouble.

Marty Valdez is in serious trouble. His sister’s wedding is around the corner, and everyone expects to meet Marty’s super-successful underwear model boyfriend—whom Marty invented. Now Marty has to produce a half-naked hottie or suffer the worst humiliation of his life.

FBI agent Luke Myers is in serious trouble. He’s been working undercover to take down a dangerous drug cartel, but his cover’s blown and he needs to disappear. Luckily, a geeky yet intriguing comic book artist gives him the perfect opportunity. Luke just has to pretend to be his boyfriend, and pretending is what he does best. But between Marty’s mother and his ex, Luke might’ve bitten off more than he can chew, and Marty’s knack for finding trouble might ruin more than just his sister’s wedding.

Undercover Boyfriend by Jacob Z. Flores is a perfect example why I love this series.  It takes the Harlequin type plot and romance, gives it a M/M couple and then elevates it again with characters I adored, a plot that, while you couldn’t expect to take it seriously all the time, was just real enough to believe in, and a ending to keep you smiling hours after you put the book/Kindle/Nook down.

Another huge plus?  The author is making it into a series. Win win.

Like the blurb, you have to start the review with the characters and Marty Valdez.  Oh Marty.  Marty has spent his life running away from things by creating fake people to help him out of situations, from playdates in childhood he wanted to avoid to his sister’s wedding now that he has to attend with a boyfriend he’s made up.  Fake friends have always worked before but now he has to produce.  In other  hands, Marty would come off perhaps unlikable, sad even but in Jacob Z. Flores’s characterization, you get Marty.  You understand him, and he’s so darn cute and funny and easy to love….well, you’re on his side immediately.  And you just know he’s the type to fall into the trouble walking around the corner.

That’s Luke Myers, the FBI agent deep undercover.  Luke is a character that Flores uses to play off Marty to perfection and I liked the way he comes alive within the Valdez household.  We get a 2 person pov  here, one being Luke’s and that works well for both furthering our connection to the characters and moving the storyline along quickly.

Yes, back to the plot.  The drug cartel.  That’s never forgotten, as it could have been here.  It slithers along, like a deadly little threat to their growing romance, poking up here and there to remind us of its presence.  Loved that effect and its smash bang blowup was thrilling. *fans*

So, this book has it all for me.  A great couple, wonderful romance, and a thriller to boot.  And we are getting a new series out of it too.  I can’t wait for the next book to be released.  Want a new romance?  Need a new couple to root for and fall in love with?  Pick up Undercover Boyfriend by Jacob Z. Flores.  I highly recommend it.  Then join me in waiting for the next story in the series.

Cover art by Paul Richmond is great.  I can see that being Luke Myers.

A MelanieM Review: The Greek Tycoon’s Green Card Groom by Kate McMurray

Rating: 2.75 stars out of 5

perf4.250x7.000.inddMarriage gets less convenient when love is involved.

It started simple: Ondrej Kovac marries Archie Katsaros so Ondrej can stay in the US, away from his judgmental family in eastern Europe. Archie marries Ondrej in exchange for the money to bail out his failing company. It’s a fraud neither man is convinced he can pull off.

But as Archie introduces Ondrej to New York society and Ondrej proves his skill in the office, they start to discover a connection between them. Can they overcome the rocky foundation their relationship was built on, meddling immigration agents, gossip columnists determined to out their deception, and an aggressive executive set on selling Archie’s company out from under him? Only if they can prove to each other their love is worth fighting for.

Well, to be honest, as much as I love Dreamspinner Press’ Dreamspun Desires series and author Kate McMurray, it was a long thought process to arrive at 2.75 stars for The Greek Tycoon’s Green Card Groom by Kate McMurray.  Not just for one reason alone but for several.

Normally I breeze through these stories.  They whip me along, carried by a romance, a fast pace reminiscent of those quickly churned out novels of decades ago and a plot I recognized turned MM.  Here I struggled to get through each page.  The storyline bogged down, as did the romance.  And there was absolutely so sense of any depth to character or location or background for anyone or anything.  Archie was supposed to be Greek.  But did we feel that or get that from the story or anything he said or did?  No, not really.  Ondrej gets a smattering of throw off lines about misunderstandings due to language…but nothing about his family or background was really explored in depth.  Nothing that gave us a real “sense” of Ondrej, the man recently immigrated.   And New York City which should have been a star city and character due to its importance as a location and raison de etre for Ondrej being there came off as a pale imitation of itself.

And Archie and Ondrej had as much heat together as an old pizza box, at least to me.  It felt that cold, old and stale.  Even the pizza rat might have given this a pass.

But I maybe I’m wrong.  The plot pulled it together in the end, the romance ended happily if too swift.  There really was never any really danger here.  If Kate McMurray is a favorite author of yours, you might want to pick this up.  The same if light romances are your thing.  For all others, you might want to give this a pass.  As always, I leave the choice up to you.

Cover art by Paul Richmond brands the series nicely but its not among my favorites.

A MelanieM Review: Ace in the Hole (Wild Cards #1) by Ava Drake

Rating: 3.75 Stars out of 5

perf4.250x7.000.inddChristian Chatsworth-Brandeis has a problem. A huge one. The US senator he works for has run away with his latest mistress on the eve of a make-or-break fund-raising event, and it’s up to him to cover his boss’s irresponsible tracks.

Stone Jackson, the senator’s new bodyguard, looks enough like the senator that, with some extensive grooming, he might pass for Senator Lacey. Christian and Stone hatch a plan to fool everyone by substituting Stone for the senator, but Miami madness and the incendiary heat between them are throwing obstacles in their way. It’s a race to find the senator and pull off the con of the century before the attraction between them spins completely out of control.

Ace in the Hole by Ava Drake is another winner in the Dreamspun Desires series from Dreamspinner Press.  A hot, sexy tale of politicians behaving badly, mystery, and romance, this story kept me entertained from beginning to end.

I always sort of dread political stories as I reside near Washington, DC but this one was more of a romp with a misbehaving Senator (not the first one) and two staff members scrambling to cover for him, in a way.  Christian and Stone both meet first in a bar, their attraction to each other hot and instantaneous.  Drake does an excellent job of portraying these men so we can see them in every detail.  And that encounter?  Very, very hot!

Things get even better once Drake brings them together in the Senator’s office, working to protect a Senator who’s nigh near un-protectable in his arrogance, stupidity and shear un-likeability.  Adding to their stress is the attraction to each other, their backgrounds which are so at odds with with each, and their determination  to keep each other at arms length.  Its also provides some of the  wonderful   moments in the story.  But this is also where I wanted something more from the author and the characters.  Drake starts to provide both men with great back histories but only fills us in so much.  Christian’s tony family and iron grandmother?  Would love to know more about her.  Stone’s employer?  Yes,  I want to know more there too.  There are just enough holes here to make me stop and think about them instead of letting me flow effortlessly through the story as I should.

I did like some of the side characters, the Senator’s wife included.  The mystery was fun, the danger…well if not high and thrilling it was well meshed into the storyline.  All in all, I throughly enjoyed Ace in the Hole and the couple involved.  And that’s a great thing apparently, because this is becoming a series.  I can’t wait to see how Ava Drake handles the next story.  I will be eagerly awaiting its release.

Cover art by Paul Richmond is again wonderful.  I just adore these covers.

Series Wild Cards #1

A MelanieM Review: Finding Family by Connie Bailey

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Finding FamilyWhen you find your family, you’ll do anything to keep it.

When Charles Macquarrie inherits a fortune and an international clothing company, he also inherits three young cousins he desperately needs help raising. By a stroke of luck, he discovers and hires Jonathan Lamb, who spent his life in a children’s home due to chronic illness, to be his nanny.

If Jon thought a budding romance with his wealthy boss complicated his life, he has no idea of the hardships awaiting him when he’s charged with embezzlement and kidnapping. But even when threatened by accounting discrepancies and mob connections, Jon and Charles won’t let go of the family they’ve built together without a fight.

I loved the premise of this story immediately.  Orphan raised by nuns in an orphanage gets the call to become the nanny or manny if you prefer for a millionaire raising  his three young charges, his cousins.  Shades of Sound of Music and any nanny romance story you can think of.  Unfortunately this doesn’t quite measure up (as if anything could) but parts come close to making this a charming story.

Let’s start with the sections and characters I loved and thought  worked well.  Jonathan Lamb, the innocent from the nuns orphanage.  I really liked him.  Lively, interesting.  The author liked him too.  Enough to endow him with interesting traits that were  well researching and fleshed him out as a living, breathing person.  He may have been living life away in small town but it was a full one. Then when his character is meshed with that of three equally wonderful, sometimes snarly, but great kids, and the book was made for me.  I loved everything about that section.  The kids slowly accepting him.  Jon working his way into learning their personalities and their interests, great, great, great.   The wonderful basket weave of family dynamics Jon wove between himself and the children is full of warmth, love, and more than a little reality.  I could have used so much more of this.

And the comparison to them and Charles Macquarrie made his character that much more lacking in about everything.  He lacked, at least for me any sort of charm, or personality other than spoiled.  His friend Bunny came off far better in the warmth and charity department than he did, in fact I adored Bunny.  Switch out Bunny for Charles and the story would have been made…5 stars.

But no we plod along with Charles, and a money mismanagement scheme, and other things that just don’t help in the long run.

There is a instant love between Charles and Jon that is just not believable.  Would Jon really have an affair with his boss if it threatened the first job he’s ever had and would take him away from the children and apparently the only person who cared about them?  No, the author never makes a case for that flaw in Jon’s character.  Its just not believable nor is the connection.  To do that you need time to build it into the story and there’s not enough pages here to  do that.  If it had been made longer, then perhaps so, but not as it is.

So what we end up with is a potentially wonderful story.  I gave it 3 stars for Jon, Bunny and the kids.  They deserved it and a better leading man than Charles.

Cover by Paul Richmond works for the story and for branding the series. Not my favorite however.

A MelanieM Review: The Cattle Baron’s Bogus Boyfriend by Nicki Bennett

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

The Cattle Baron's Bogus BoyfriendIt might be a sham to his boss, but it’s all too real to him.

Administrative assistant Jonah Hollis has nurtured a hopeless crush on his boss, millionaire cattle rancher Lincoln Courtwright, ever since he started working for him. But hope is kindled when Linc and beautiful rodeo star Melissa Cutler break up just weeks before the biggest event of the Dallas social season, the Cattle Baron’s Ball, and Linc asks Jonah to accompany him in her place.

Is it all a ploy to make Melissa jealous? Can Jonah fit into Linc’s world? It takes some encouragement from his roommates and his best friend, Caylee, for Jonah to agree. Before long, Jonah dares to believe Linc might just feel something for him… until interfering family and a series of misunderstandings threaten his fragile dream of happiness.

The Cattle Baron’s Bogus Boyfriend by Nicki Bennett is another adorable romance from Dreamspinner Press’ Dreamspun Desires series.  With a plot that’s a throwback to those sixties romance movies and novels, assistance Jonah has fallen in love with his handsome, supposedly ‘straight’ cowboy CEO boss, Lincoln ” Linc “Courtwright.  Jonah has made himself indispensable to his boss, working long hours and even buying the gifts for his girlfriend, Melissa.

Yes, the story is running true to form and I am loving every word of it.  Why?  Because of the characters.  Jonah is a gem of the character.  From the description above, some of you might be thinking doormat but that’s hardly the case.  Jonah, as written by Nicki Bennett, is intelligent, wry, funny and very self aware of the situation he’s in.  Not a typical 60’s romance character.  I adore him.  Plus the author has surrounded Jonah with a group of friends/housemates that are as lively and wonderful a support family as you could ask for.  Honestly, I want Wes’  story next, along with the rest.

But the character of Linc is no slouch.  He’s the tall, dark, handsome love interest.  A cowboy who is rich, owns a large Texas ranch, oil…yes, I know, heard it all before.  Yet, I loved Linc too.  Once the author started the conversations going between Linc and Jonah, Linc became more of a believable person and less a Ken doll, which may have been the author’s goal for us and Jonah all along.  To show us the real person behind the facade she originally presents us with.

There are some other plot lines with Jonah’s parents, small town homophobia and a long time best friend.  They were nicely handled but some of it felt almost too “pushed” into the story to feel part of the natural flow of the narrative. Drama needed?  Boom, there it was.  Doesn’t mean I didn’t like the epilogue because I really did.

The only thing too contrived for me?  The part of the story used as the major drama point in the plot.  I thought the character of Jonah would have been too smart for the actions that followed, but perhaps that was just me.

That aside, I adored this story, the characters and yes, the HEA.  The Cattle Baron’s Bogus Boyfriend by Nicki Bennett is just the story for you if you love a sweet romance, terrific characters and a wonderful surrounding cast.  I would love for Nicki Bennett to give Wes his story too.  Perhaps more.  This is a universe that cries out for a series.  I hope the author is listening.

Cover art by Paul Richmond.  I love this series and its covers.  They are perfect in tone, design and grab my heart as well as my attention.

A MelanieM Review: Forgive and Forget (Dreamspun Desires) by Charlie Cochet

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Forgive and ForgetHe’s hot. He’s dangerous. And he can’t remember anything.

As the owner of Apple’n Pies, Joe Applin leads a quiet, uneventful life, content to spend his days serving customers who come from all over to eat his delicious homemade pies. Along with his motley crew—Bea, Elsie, and Donnie—Joe couldn’t be happier in his little kingdom of baked goods and java.

Experience has taught Joe that love is overrated—and at times dangerous. He has no intention of repeating past mistakes. But then he meets a mysterious, handsome man with amnesia, and Joe can’t deny something sweet is in the works. He isn’t one to take risks, not with his heart and certainly not with his life, but the more time he spends with the man he knows as Tom, the closer he is to losing both.

Charlie Cochet’s Forgive and Forget picks up and runs with the ‘mystery man who can remember who he is’ trope and turns it into a wonderful quick moving romance in another of Dreamspinner Press’ Dreamspun Desires series.

Starting with the character of Joe Applin and the welcoming crew at Joe’s pie cafe, Apple’n Pies, Cochet creates a memorable cast and location guaranteed to pull the reader in and keep them throughly absorbed in Joe’s little corner of the world and his developing romance.  I thought Joe Applin had such a nice balance of quirks and professionalism, that it made his cafe real, his pies sound mouth watering delicious and his character believable and someone I could connect with.  You laughed with Joe and you hurt with Joe, that’s how much I liked this character.

I felt that way about Bea, and Elsie and Donnie too.

Then along comes “Tom”, aka our mystery man.  Tom is the one that seems too good to be true.  Handsome, good at everything, his eyes all but sparkles and yes, he’s gay and attracted to Joe.  Had Charlie Cochet been writing another story in another series, maybe I might have had a little eye roll here.  But again, the author is writing a story in a series that’s bringing back a style of romance that is perhaps not only a tad naive in outlook but originally launched when plots were, if not not as complex, then maybe more streamlined in approach.  So Tom is welcomed with a wary if swift embrace by all, including this reader, and the romance is on.

Yes, I loved that approach to romance too.  Its warmhearted, sexy, and occasionally funny.  You want these men to be together, no matter the odds, a clear sign the author has succeeded in her writing and in the love building between Joe and “Tom”.   There’s the mystery and a bit of suspense.  The ending brings things full  circle which is, again, in keeping with the format of the series and writing this story is going for. I won’t spoil it for you. Needless to say I loved this story and absolutely recommend  it to all.

Forgive and Forget is a quick, heartwarming, absorbing story.  I picked it up and forgot about everything else until I put it down.  I wouldn’t even mind if Charlie Cochet gave us a trip back to their world and let us in to see how they are doing, a Forgive and Forget  II.

Until then, go grab this up and get started on an enjoyable  trip to a New York pie cafe owned by a man named Joe and his  mystery man searching for love and something more.

Cover art by Paul Richmond continues the terrific job that is a hallmark of this series.

A MelanieM Review: Trial by Fire by BA Tortuga

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Trial By FireOne Aussie. One Texan. One baby. One hell of a fight.

When his sister and her husband are killed in an accident, Aussie cattle station owner Lachlan McCoughney rushes to Texas to rescue their infant daughter, Chloe. He expects to find his niece living in squalor with the Sheffields, a rodeo family.

Instead, Lachlan finds Holden Sheffield, a salt-of-the-earth cowboy running a huge business operation. They want to explore their mutual attraction despite the many problems thrown their way, and together, they must find a way to give Chloe a new family and find a love that spans thousands of acres and two continents.

Once again, BA Tortuga has nailed it with this emotional, funny, heartbreaking romance featuring an itty bitty Texas cowboy and a Aussie cattle station owner. No one, I repeat, no one, does that tiny powerful cowboy like Tortuga.  They exist in rodeos across the nation and in ranches throughout the United States.  Tough as rawhide, tiny as they come and packing a punch that will level you.

And this author gets them at a cellular level.

That’s Holden Sheffield, whose just lost his beloved twin brother, Landon, and wife, Addie, who Holden adored, in a plane crash, leaving him the sole guardian, of their daughter.  Holden, and his entire family are devastated, in pain and in shock, when the Aussie appears demanding to see his niece and more.  You can imagine how that would play out.  But to the author’s credit, she doesn’t go to the places we would expect but takes those scenes to unexpected avenues of calmness and evenhandedness first.  I loved that.  Holden was a perfect explosion of unanticipated character traits…yet the whole of him made perfect sense.  Loved that man!

Lachlan McCoughney is more of a well defined brand, but that works here too.  In fact that may be needed for the drama within the story.  His is the yin to Holden’s yang, the two types of men, the two types of stations/ranch operations and yet on the outside so dissimilar,on the inside, so very much alike where it counts.  If only Lachlan will be brave enough to see and act on it.  I loved and understood Lachlan too because the basis for his actions is also love of family and land.  Something that BA Tortuga also understands deeply and is able to easily  translate into her stories.

Backing up the main characters for their fight for the child are the parents and ranch hands, all of whom are beautifully defined and realistic in their own right.  This book could extend into multiple stories in a heartbeat with all the characters involved.

Grab this story right up and hold on tight.  You will read through it quickly and then want to go through it again to see what you missed.  Its sexy, heartwarming, and one for the comfort chair.  I highly recommend it.

A MelanieM Review: Taylor Maid (Dreamspun Desires) by Tara Lain

Rating: 4 stars out of  5

Taylor MaidHe’ll marry the maid to get $50 million but a secret could queer the deal.

Taylor Fitzgerald needs a last-minute bride.

On the eve of his twenty-fifth birthday, the billionaire’s son discovers that despite being gay, he must marry a woman before midnight or lose a fifty-million-dollar inheritance. So he hightails it to Las Vegas… where he meets the beautiful maid Ally May.

There’s just one rather significant problem: Ally is actually Alessandro Macias, son of a tough Brazilian hotel magnate. But if Ally keeps pretending to be a girl for a little while longer, is there a chance they might discover this marriage is tailor-made?

Tara Lain’s Taylor Maid is another hit in the utterly charming series from Dreamspinner, Dreamspun Desires that seeks to replicate and perhaps even better those series romances from decades ago. You know, with familiar names like Silhouette?  That cover duplicates the retro charm of an earlier time effortlessly as does this story by Tara Lain.

Once again, a old familiar plot gets a M/M update and I loved it.   Runaway heiress is now an heir, who is being pressured into a business merger marriage by his father.  Escaping to the United States, he uses makeup, expertly, transforming into an adorable  maid. Next?  Ally meets a billionaire’s son in need of a wife in order to hold onto his fortune because of a cause in his grandfather’s will and a duplicitous father.  Yes, I can see those heads nodding in recognition, you know this storyline like the back of your hand (why not go with a cliche here).

What turns an old workhorse of a plot into a fresh new adorable pony of a story?  The characters, dialog and a romance you want to cheer for, that’s what.  The character that I fell in love with immediately was that of Ally aka Alessandro Macias, runaway heir of Brazilian hotel conglomerate magnate.  Ally is brave, beautiful, fierce and every bit a magnificent drag queen in the making.  I could read an entire series of books about Ally.

So its no wonder that Ally turns the world upside down for desperate rich boy Taylor Fitzgerald, who needs a bride, gets one and then can’t figure out why he’s attracted to his new “wife”  when he’s gay to his bones.  Its so much fun watching this story play out. There’s some angst but not too much, a little suspense, a little drama, lots of humor and plenty of passion.

Tara Lain moves her  story quickly along, it zings where it should, sings where it should and ends happily ever after…just as it should.

You can actually get a subscription to the Dreamspun Desires books, just like you could the old romances.  So far, I’ve loved them all. Definitely put this on your TBR list if you are a lover of the old-time romance stories, or sweet tales of love.  Tara Lain’s Taylor Maid  is a story you won’t want to miss.

Cover art by Paul Richmond is perfection.  I love  the retro look of these covers, its charming and a throwback to another age.

Love a Romance Story? First Comes Marriage by Shira Anthony is Just the Thing (excerpt and giveaway)

Gonna Marry Me A Billionaire:

First Comes Marriage by Shira Anthony

Thank you Melanie and Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for hosting the First Comes Marriage book tour! For those readers who may not already know, First Comes Marriage is the second book in the brand new Dreamspun Desires line of gay category romances from Dreamspinner Press. Be sure to read to the bottom of the post for an excerpt from the book, as well as the Rafflecopter giveaway. You could win a dozen red roses for your sweetheart or yourself!

The Dreamspun Desires line takes its inspiration from the classic romances and features well-loved romance tropes. You’d recognize these setups from the old Harlequin style books: forced marriages, enemies to lovers, mistaken identity, and the one I used in First Comes Marriage, the marriage of convenience.

There’s one other classic trope in First Comes Marriage, however, and it’s one romance readers will immediately recognize…. Poor character falls for rich character, and vice-versa. It’s a trope rooted in dreams of living in enormous mansions, traveling all over the world and in style, and being able to buy whatever we want, whenever we want.

I had a ton of fun creating my billionaire playboy, Jesse Donovan, one of the two main characters in First Comes Marriage. On the surface, Jesse is a confident businessman who runs his family’s boat building business. We’re talking big boats. Very big boats, including commercial shipping vessels. Under the surface, Jesse is slightly geeky and very sweet. But he doesn’t show that side to just anyone.

Enter my poor boy, Chris Valentine, a struggling novelist who works as a barista at a coffee shop in New York City. Chris is very different from Jesse. He’s a bit of a nonconformist and he isn’t overly impressed with money. Chris immediately likes Jesse when they meet, but he doesn’t jump at Jesse’s million dollar offer to enter into a fake marriage with him.

Creating the universe Jesse lives in was a lot of fun. Jesse’s family’s mansion is in Connecticut, built on a bluff overlooking the ocean. I modeled it on a gorgeous Connecticut mansion with a storied history. Tudor, with lots of personality, Windmere, as the Donovan family named the estate is a beautiful place. Flowering trees and bushes grace the sprawling grounds. There are formal and informal gardens. There’s a stable for horses, a small beach, a tree-house of sorts that any adult would be happy to live in, a coach house and cottages, and even a family cemetery.

Inside, the house is classic, with several wings in which the inhabitants and staff live. There’s a magnificent conservatory with high glass ceilings and huge plants, there are libraries filled with books, including a collection of expensive old books.

Against this backdrop, Chris is a bit overwhelmed. But that’s the point: his view of Jesse’s idyllic life is the jumping off point for their relationship. Chris soon discovers, however, that although Jesse might not be the “poor little rich kid,” he’s down to earth and has experienced his share of pain and loss over the years.

The classic category romance is all about escaping from reality. What better way to escape than to spend a few hours immersed in a world few of us will ever experience? I’ll leave you with an excerpt from First Comes Marriage which will give you a sense of the strange new world Chris walks into when he comes to live at Windmere. I hope you enjoy it! –Shira

Blurb:

Their marriage was supposed to be all business….

When struggling novelist Chris Valentine meets Jesse Donovan, he’s interested in a book contract, or possibly a date. The last thing Chris expects is a marriage proposal from New York City’s most eligible bachelor!

Jesse’s in a pinch. To keep control of his company, he has to marry. So he has valid reasons for offering Chris this business deal: in exchange for living in a gorgeous mansion for a year, playing the doting husband, Chris gets all the writing time he wants and walks away with a million-dollar payoff. Surely Chris can handle that. He can handle living with the most handsome and endearing man he’s ever met, a man he immediately knows he wants in the worst way and can’t have. Or can he?

Excerpt from Chapter Seven

The setup: Jesse needs to marry because his grandfather’s will says he will lose control of the family business to his stepgrandmother, Wenda, if he doesn’t marry within a year of his grandfather’s death. Jesse and Chris have just tied the knot in Manhattan and are headed to Connecticut to Jesse’s estate, Windmere.

The limo turned off the main road a moment later, and they waited as a large gate swung open to admit them. A high brick wall surrounded the property, obscuring the house.

Huge oaks dotted the grounds, and the long drive wound through thickets of flowering bushes and lush green vegetation. Underneath the immense trees, daffodils and tulips poked through the dirt. A winding creek made its way across the property and disappeared into a forest of evergreens and bushes. Jesse opened the windows, and the bright scent of freshly cut grass wafted in.

“This is Windmere,” Jesse said, his expression one of true pride. “We have a few minutes before we get to the house, so I guess we’d better go through a few things.”

“Sure.”

“If Wenda’s here,” Jesse said, “we’ll need to keep up the act.”

“Okay. You’re the director,” Chris quipped. “What’s the scene?”

“Just be yourself. The only backstory you need to know is that we met at one of your readings a few months ago.”

“And you? Mr. Bachelor of the Century?”

“Yes, well, that one’s a bit trickier,” Jesse agreed. “I just figured out that I’m bisexual.”

“You… what? I mean, I thought—”

“I’ll tell her that,” Jesse quickly interposed.

“Ah, okay,” Chris said, relieved. Because if he knew Jesse might actually be interested in something more than playacting, it would make things even more complicated. “Got it. And?”

“And that’s it. It’s none of her business who I marry.”

Chris was about to point out that, in a sense, it was Wenda’s business, but at that moment the limo rolled past the dense trees to reveal the house. Only “house” wasn’t exactly the word for it.

A sprawling Tudor-style mansion with steeply pitched roofs, dark half timbers and white stone beneath the eaves, mullioned windows of every shape imaginable, and high chimneys, with a herringboned brick façade on the lower floors, Windmere was both imposing and beautiful. Chris stepped from the limo and stared at the building while the rustling leaves from the huge weeping willow that overhung the driveway made a sound much like the brush of a hand over a stringed instrument. The faint scent of the ocean wafted on the breeze.

“It’s amazing,” Chris said at last.

All about Shira

Shira Anthony is a complete sucker for a happily-ever-after, and rarely reads or writes a story without one. Never a fan of instalove, Shira likes to write stories about real men with real issues making real relationships work.

In her last incarnation, Shira was a professional opera singer, performing roles in such operas as “Tosca,” “Pagliacci,” and “La Traviata,” among others. Her Blue Notes Series is loosely based upon her own experiences as a professional musician.

Shira is married with two children and two insane dogs and when she’s not writing, she is usually in a courtroom trying to make the world safer for children. When she’s not working, she can be found aboard a 36’ catamaran at the Carolina coast with her favorite sexy captain at the wheel. She’s given up TV for evenings spent with her laptop, and she never goes anywhere without a pile of unread M/M romance on her Kindle.
