A Jeri Review: A Good Enough Reason by C.M. Lievens

A Good Enough Reason Coming of age/teenage romance stories can be tough. Too much can be….icky, but not enough leaves you wanting so much more. Just as teenagers skate a fine line between being children and adults, stories based on them can skate that line as well. But this book did that really well.

Ellis is your typical nerdy loner with one friend. Well, he had two but one of them moved away. Dale is Mr. Jock Popularity in school. We all knew him, that guy that everyone loved and he loved everyone back. So when Ellis and Dale are paired together for an English topic to debate for and against a topic, Dale thinks he is being cool by suggesting they debate if gay teens should get the same perks as straight teens as far as prom goes. Ellis assumes Dale is mocking him and it takes a while to convince Ellis that even though he is popular, Dale is a good guy. He even wants to find him a prom date.

Dale and Ellis grow closer, with Dale pushing the boundaries of friendship. And while this could have come off as supremely cocky of him, it didn’t. He genuinely seemed like a kid who wanted to explore his bisexuality with someone he not only considered a friend, but someone he was really attracted to.

Ellis is wary, but doesn’t throw up walls of “stay away seemingly straight dude”! He has a sounding board in his friend who moved away and best friend who is witnessing it all.

The author also does an amazing job of dealing with bullying. Not only how easily and often it happens, but how it is so overlooked by teachers. They just don’t take it seriously until it goes too far. And usually the person being bullied doesn’t want to come out and say anything because ultimately that makes the bullying worse. One scene, which I will call “the locker incident”, when Ellis is just dumbfounded that he is getting in trouble for something that happened TO him, I was heartbroken. Because it happens every.single.day.

This was a really great young adult romance story with a lot of meat to it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would actually love to read more about Dale and Ellis.

A Jeri Review: The Sweet Spot (Homeruns #4) By Sloan Johnson

4 ½ Home runs!

The Sweet Spot cover I love baseball. Therefore I love books with baseball and baseball players. I really enjoyed the first three in this series, but I think this one might be my favorite. The previous books all revolved around MLB players at different places in their careers. In this installment, we get to see the side we don’t often see- a guy trying to make it up from the minors to the majors. Think Bull Durham. But gay. And without the cocky attitude of Nuke Laloosh.

Not only is Nick playing in the minors and fighting for a spot in the big show, he is also fighting to distance himself from his father- himself a former MLB player and current general manager for the team he plays in the minors for. He doesn’t want any preferential treatment. He is also harboring a secret- he doesn’t want anyone to know he is gay. Which is just so silly. Not only is his team very open and accepting of gay players- several have come before him and still play. But he doesn’t want that label. So while he is having a hot and heavy fling with Cody, he abruptly ends it to focus more on his career.

Fast forward a few years. Nick is still playing in the minors, but Cody is taken on as a social media intern. He doesn’t expect to run into Nick the first day, but he does.

What I loved about this book. Nick is in the proverbial closet, but he doesn’t end things with Cody because of that- even though that is what Cody thinks. He ends it because he doesn’t want distractions. He wants to make it to the majors.

Ms. Johnson also shines a light on what minor league players go through. It is hardly the glamorous life of a big leaguer. They have to play as a team while battling for the few MLB roster spots. They often travel by bus. They make very little money. They are constantly traded away and rarely get to be with their families. And the politics of baseball could almost put Washington to shame.

I also loved how Cody really came into his own. We met him in a previous book when a couple of players took him in. At the beginning of the book he was a high school senior struggling with life. When we meet him again he is finishing up college and has his eyes firmly on what he wants to do with his life. And although he still loves Nick, he does not immediately jump into his arms.

This book was a roller coaster ride. It was great storytelling from Nick’s point of view. I don’t want to spoil things in the book- because you really need to read it- but the range of highs and lows that he experiences rings so true. Through it all though is Cody.

We get some glimpses and scenes of players from past books, which I always love. You don’t have to read their books to know them in this book. But don’t miss those books, because they are really good.

Great book without the typical cliché angst, it was sweet and although there were struggles, the pay off is totally worth it.

I read the first book in this series, somehow missed the second and now this is the third. I definitely want to go back and read the second to fill in some of the blanks.

Marc and Tomas had very different upbringing, but they became unlikely friends. When Tomas realizes the abuse going on in Marc’s home he broke his friends trust by asking his grandfather for help. But he ended up betraying his only friend and losing him.

Although they lost touch for years, they never forgot each other. As an adult, Tomas seeks Marc out. To explain what happened and to hopefully get his friend back. They become roommates and tentative friends, but Marc can’t forget what happened. In a half hearted attempt to spare Marc’s feelings, Tomas moves out. But with mutual friends, they often see each other. And the feelings between them grow.

This story broke my heart. I could feel and understand how betrayed Marc felt, but I could also completely understand how Tomas was trying to help.

The closeness and connection between them was evident. From Tomas immediately calling Marc for help and Marc dropping what he was doing to offer that help.

One man with a very religious background and one man with little understanding of love, trust and loyalty. As adults they begin to evolve and grow together. And they finally understand and accept what happened when they were teens.

The author does an excellent job of maintaining side characters so that you want to read the next story to see what happens with them.

Although the story needed the background of their childhoods, I would have liked it more if the childhood story was told all at once and not in a series of flash backs. This created a bit of a disconnect for me and I would have been more invested in the story if I knew the whole background up front instead of thinking Marc being a jerk and then finding out why. Or that Tomas was tentative and stand offish without knowing his whole story.

Still a good book, but I would recommend starting with book 1 and reading in order.

To call this book an erotic romance it quite a misnomer. What it is is a story of an up and coming rock band in the 80’s and the lead guitarist is a severe drug addict. Perhaps the book is an erotic romance- but the romance is between Jax and heroin.

Being the 80’s, Jax is in the closet. Because being gay was still far from accepted, especially from a hard rock guitarist. But he is falling hard for the new lead singer.

While we watch Jax and the band navigate the rock scene in LA in the mid- 80’s, we also watch not only Jax descend into deep heroin addiction, but he also then drags his lead singer with him.

Jax is a narcissist to the nth degree. You want to believe he cares about his music, about hitting it big, about his band, about Harley, but really he cares only about heroin and when he will get his next fix.

Honestly, if you read this book not as a work of erotic fiction but one of a story of drug addiction in the 80’s rock scene, I would have given it a higher rating. As it was I could barely get through it because it was a melting pot of drugs, booze and co-dependency. What it is not is a gay romance. At all.

The cover art really depicts the characters and the theme of rock in the 80’s. Get me my Aqua Net!

After reading Him I couldn’t wait to read Us. So often in a book the couple gets a happily ever after and if you’re lucky, they might turn up in another book briefly. So I love that I got more of Wes and Jamie. You will too. If you read Him, Us is a must.

Out of college and establishing their “adult” lives, Wes and Jamie are still navigating through difficult waters. Some familiar to us, some not. One man making more than the other. One accepting family, one not. Traveling hockey schedules that don’t mesh. And the biggest hurdle, trying to stay in the closet. Jamie promised Wes to keep their relationship a secret for a year. But how long a year is depends on which side of the closet door you are on.

Both make missteps and both hurt each other and make mistakes. This is a real relationship, in my opinion. Nothing is perfect. I love when books reflect that. Until a near tragedy puts their relationship and their lives in the spotlight.

I adored the new characters brought into this story. Funny, quirky and loyal, Wes’ teammates are a welcome addition. And intentional or not, this really shows how everything is skewed toward Wes and his pro hockey career. But when they find balance and acceptance, I swooned.

I am torn between wanting another Wes and Jamie book or a new book about one of the teammates. To me, that is a mark of a really good book and good story. Satisfied but still wanting more. So how about another book please?

A Jeri Review: The Taste of Ink by Francis Gideon

He adores Charlie, but Mathieu—a punk singer turned acoustic crooner—was Trevor’s first love, and Trevor lost him by being too afraid to chase the dreams they shared.

When the Stampede ends, Charlie will go back to Toronto, Mathieu will go back on tour, and Trevor will go back to his basement. Realizing that’s not what he wants, Trevor enters a mechanical bull-riding contest in hopes of winning the heart of his true love—or maybe both of them. When I think of cowboys, I think of the mid-west. Texas, Oklahoma, Montana. Apparently Canada has cowboys too. Who knew?

In this story we meet shy artist Trevor. His sister convinces him to go to the Calgary Stampede with her. A week of cowboys and everything cowboy related. He doesn’t want to go, but then he meets Charlie. A cowboy previously, he loves the Stampede and the men there.

They begin a hot and heavy affair- with the mutual understanding that it would only last as long as the Stampede did. But feelings begin to develop which they were not expecting. Trevor still stings from his last heart break- which he brought on himself and Charlie never saw himself in a relationship at all.

While the relationship developing was cute and the sex was super hot, this book was touted as M/M/M. Yet we don’t meet the third man until nearly the end of the book. And while Trevor and Mathieu have a history, the instant connection between Charlie and Mathieu seemed forced. After one night together all three are ready to pursue a poly relationship.

Trevor came out of his self-imposed shelf, but he came of as very meek, very submissive, being led around by the rich cowboy who bought him things and spoiled him.

A decent story, a new setting, hot sex scenes and some romance. I would have liked it more with either just Trevor and Charlie or with a lot more development of the poly relationship. But it was still an enjoyable read.

This was my first book by Jay Northcote and it won’t be my last! (For the record- 3 ½ stars means I really liked it!)

Alec is a closeted lawyer at a very successful law firm. His goal to become partner is becoming a reality- but he feels like he has to stay in the closet for it. His best friend acts as his arm candy/ girlfriend at various events to keep questions at bay. But sometimes his needs are too much.

Ed is out and proud and ready to start his new job. A night on the town leads to a seriously hot encounter with a stranger. Until he finds out the stranger is his new boss. They agree to be platonic work colleagues but you know the saying, the best laid plans….

The chemistry between Alec and Ed is off the charts hot. Alec turns into a jerk to try to deny the attraction to Ed, and honestly the way Ed just kind of accepted that but then also fell into his arms at the same time put me off a bit. But Ed’s strength to NOT go back into the closet. That made me want to cheer.

Watching Alec come to terms with who he is and accepting himself was a page turner. Even though he was a jerk, you knew why and you were cheering for him to own his truth. And Ed- standing up for himself- for HIS truth- was awesome. I just wanted to high five him!

Definitely give this book a read. Although there is the closet/no closet thing, the angst level is fairly low and the hotness level is very high.

A Jeri Review: The Imperfection of Swans by Brandan Witt

Kevin Bivanti’s dream is to open a wedding dress shop, a place with the stunning gowns to make every bride-to-be feel adored. I really loved this book! The general concept of the story was not all that original. Two guys working together and don’t want to mess up their professional relationship, but fighting it gets harder and harder. We’ve read that before right?

Yep, we have. But what we haven’t read about is one of the characters who is at once so lovable and so flawed and the other, just as lovable and trying hard not to be flawed. It is the flaws and the way they are dealt with which made this book a BIG 4 1/2 star read for me.

Kevin is the character with the most issues. And like most people with issues like his, he denies them and makes excuses for them. His strength and vulnerability make you want to hug him and tell him it is going to get better. Kevin is finally taking a huge leap to live his dream- that of opening a bridal shop in Boston. With the help of his moms and extended family, it looks like it will become a reality. Until financing falls through.

Enter Casper, a head pastry chef who has his own dream of opening a bakery. He lives with 4 loud music majors so that he can save up enough money to open his own bakery. Kismet brings them together and with Casper able to help secure the financing on the multi million dollar building- it seems as though they will both be living their dreams.

This book contains some pretty serious subject matter- eating disorders and anxiety. Both could have easily been portrayed as overly dramatic or sensationalistic, but they are not. They are addressed head on, shown for the true colors that they are. How they affect not only the person living with them, but the people who love them as well.

There is also an outstanding cast of background characters in this book. Two of my favorites were Renata and Noelle- Kevin’s moms. Their yin yang relationship so mirrors the relationship that Kevin and Casper are trying to build together.

I laughed and I cried. I couldn’t wait to turn the page and I didn’t want it to end.

Although this is book 2, it can easily be read as a stand alone. In fact, I hadn’t read the first and didn’t feel like I was missing anything.

Raven is out and proud, but still living a double life. He is a star football player in college and everyone- especially his parents- want him to get drafted into the NFL. The notoriety a Native American player would bring to his tribe and his tribe’s casino would be unmatched. But really, Raven wants to work with at risk LGBT teens.

Dennis is a film student at the same college as Raven and is brought in to create a commercial for the casino. Dennis is harboring some huge secrets and a bit of a reputation as a trouble maker. But Raven is completely drawn to him- even though Dennis swears he is straight.

Some of the things I really enjoyed about this book: the idea of being two- spirited, total acceptance of Raven as a gay many not only by his family, but by his tribe, and Dennis- who finally discovers who he is and fights to save his sister and ultimately himself.

There were some beautiful Native American legends brought in to enhance this story and they really worked. The imagery was really amazing, the sweat lodge, the snake, etc. There was nothing, I felt, stereotypical about any of the Native American story line. I absolutely adored the relationship between Raven and his grandfather. Their bond was amazing.

This original story has it all. I definitely recommend it to all who enjoy non-cookie cutter MM romance.

Calvin Summers and Ethan Hobbs have been best friends since childhood, but somewhere along the line, their friendship evolved into something more. Unfortunately, change is difficult for Ethan; most days he does well to deal with his Selective Mutism and Social Anxiety. Calvin’s confession adds a new struggle for Ethan, one he fears might cost him the friendship that’s been his whole world for as long as he can remember.

As partners and Defense Agents at the THIRDS, being on Destructive Delta is tough at the best of times, but between call-outs and life-threatening situations, Calvin and Ethan not only face traversing the challenges of their job, but also working toward a future as more than friends.

Well, Charlie Cochet has done it yet again. Quite often when there is a series of books, the more books there are, the more the quality and story lines wane. Not so in this, the 6^th book of the THIRDS series.

The first four books were based around Dex and Sloane, the fifth book was Ash and Cael. This installment brings us the budding romance between work partners and best friends Calvin and Hobbs (yes, Calvin and Hobbs).

Calvin- a human agent for THIRDS, and Hobbs- his Therian THIRDS partner have been inseparable since childhood. Although obviously smaller and not as strong, Calvin always had Hobbs’ back. Hobbs is plagued with debilitating anxiety and selective mutism. Calvin is one of only two people he can talk to; the other being one of his brothers.

Working so closely together at THIRDS and watching their teammates couple up, the lines between friends and more than friends begins to blur. But both are terrified of losing the friendship which has gotten them through some tough things in life.

The budding, tentative romance between the two is beautiful. They already love each other so much and to see that love grow into romantic love is swoon worthy. They don’t jump into it though, as they are unsure of how to act and behave with this new thing between them. Add in severe anxiety, a ridiculously dangerous job and family that doesn’t always understand and you have a great engaging story that keeps you turning the pages.

One of the great things about this series is that they aren’t just romance and sex. They are great stories in a world that is both very different and very similar to the one we live in.

It is nearly impossible for me to give a 5 star review and the reason this book gets 4 ½ instead of 5 is that so many of the chapters ended virtually the same way- or with the same thoughts. It got a bit tedious as I didn’t need to be reminded of the sentiment constantly. There is also a cliff hanger that makes you want to throw your kindle across the room, but them run to get it and start the book over again.

The cover by L.C. Chase is in the same vein as pervious, but with Calvin front and center with Hobbs’ back behind him- which speaks to not only Hobbs’ anxiety but also to them always having each other’s backs.
