A MelanieM Review: When Adam Fell (Foothills Pride #4) by Pat Henshaw

Rating: 3.75 (rounded up to 4) stars out of 5

When Adam FellWhen his lover Jason’s drug addiction spiraled out of control, TV celebrity chef and cookbook author Adam de Leon walked away from him. Adam also abandoned his renowned restaurant in San Francisco to start a small bistro in the Sierra Foothills.

Five years later Adam is battling the conservative leaders of Stone Acres, California, to open a new restaurant in historic Old Town when Jason turns up on his doorstep—a recovered Jason, now going by the name David and claiming he’s overcome his addictions. What’s more, he begs Adam to take him back and says he’s ready for their happily ever after.

Adam has enough on his plate with problems plaguing the opening of his restaurant. And now he’s having a hard time deciding which to follow—his head or his heart.

Another in the wonderful Foothills Pride series, When Adam Fell brings us the broken love affair of celebrity chief  Adam de Leon and his lover Jason, two men together since childhood who allowed the past and fame to destroy their love and relationship.  Now its five years later and Adam has removed his restaurant and home to the foothills, and closed down his heart.  Then Jason reappears asking for a second chance.

Pat, Pat, Pat.  You only give us 92 pages when this story cries out for double that!  These are such complicated, wounded men and you have given them a wonderfully layered past, one you  could  pick at from so many angles.  I loved that.  The “beautiful boy” stuff? Great!  I could have sunk myself into chapters alone with their past history and relationship.  But that was not to  be.  Sigh.

The Jason that reappears has remade himself down to a new name.  Its a shakeup for Adam and the reader who now have to adjust their perspective on this man.  To Pat Henshaw’s credit as a writer, we do.  She makes the case that Adam has never lost the feelings he had for Jason and is now rebuilding them in a new, healthier way.  And this time Adam has a strong support system (Stone, Fredi and the rest of his friends) to help him make the transition.

As much as I loved this story (and make no mistake, I do), I felt that some parts were still missing for me, more of their past perhaps, more of Jason, I’m not sure, but there’s a hole here somewhere.  Its too short for the scope of the story and the men involved.    And that restaurant, the new one?  Loved that.  I hope we see more of it and the new people they are hiring to work there  So many great possibilities for new stories on the horizon.

I love this series and each couple that has come about.  The Foothills Pride series is rich with wonderful stories, believable people and moving romance.  When Adam Fell is the fourth, grab them all up!  I highly recommend them all.

Cover art by AngstyG is perfect for the story, characters and place.

A MelanieM Review: End Street Detective Agency Volume Two (End Street Detective Agency #3-4) by Amber Kell & R.J. Scott

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

End Street Detectives Vol 2The Case of the Dragon’s Dilemma

Dragons, battles, a Siren attack and a deal Sam may come to regret leave Sam and Bob in danger…and result in Mikhail finding a mate.

Bob and Sam take their kind-of-adopted-now vampire daughter Mal to look at new schools. Mikhail is left to babysit the last of the remaining rescued children whilst they are away.

When Sirens appear to steal her away, he is left facing the attack alone until a mysterious hero comes to his aid. Ryujin, or Jin to his friends, is a dragon shifter and his role as Captain of the Dragon Guards puts him in direct conflict with Mikhail.

The minute he sees Mikhail he knows what he wants. Now if he can only get Mikhail to see the same.

The Case of the Sinful Santa

Zephariel, the Angel of Vengeance, Nick Klauson, nephew to Santa, Christmas magic, zombies in the school and a necromancer causing chaos…and at the centre of it all-Mal.

Zephariel is the Angel of Vengeance and is tracking down his cousin Danjal for misuse of brimstone. When he walks into a bar and finds Nick Klauson drowning his sorrows, he is instantly drawn to him. Could this be his fated mate?

When Nick and Zeph join forces to deal with zombies in Mal’s school, sparks fly. Add in a demon, a wolf and a necromancer, and Sam and Bob have a hunt on their hands.

For purposes of this review, I am only going to deal with The Case of the Dragon’s Dilemma (book#3) as I have already reviewed The Case of the Sinful Santa here.  The case starts with the remnants of the last one, as most of the stories do.  Here it is one of the remaining kidnapped children that they have been unable to figure out what species she is and where she belongs.  Unfortunately the Sirens are determined to  recapture her and in the attack, her identity is revealed.  She is a dragon.

I absolutely loved the world and myth-building that went on in this story.  Amber Kell and RJ Scott went far deeper into this world, exploring the subtleties of the dragon culture politics and shifting current loyalties.  Sam and Bob, more Sam here and his familiar go along to help see the dragon child home, along with Mikhail, the half vampire/half siren (cousin to Bob) and Captain of the Dragon Guards, Jim, who recognizes Mikhail as his mate.  Mikhail?  Not so much.    The descriptions of the dragons make you yearn to see them and in fact, this whole story make you want the authors to separate it out into their own series.  Its that good.

Perhaps they will, they certainly left us with a huge, well not cliffhanger, but certainly a character in need of a  solution and a heart in need of mending.  That story has yet to be told.  I can’t wait.  This series and its characters has stolen my heart and I eagerly await each new case that arises.

Have you found this series yet?  Are you a lover of the supernatural or paranormal?  Like a mystery or two or three thrown in for good measure?  This series has got it all.  Pick them up and get started today.

Cover art by Meredith Russell.  I like these covers. The design is really beautiful, excerpt that is not my idea of a dragon, and they pull you in.

A MelanieM Review: Wild and Precious (Wild and Precious #1) by CJane Elliott

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Wild and PreciousAspiring writer Brent Granger has good friends and a great job at an arts magazine in DC, but he’s batting zero in the arena of love. Brent begins to get a clue why things aren’t working with women from his strong attraction to his gorgeous, gay, and already attached boss, Graham Stoneford. When he sees a personal ad from a man that quotes his favorite poet, Brent decides to do something wild and answer.

Enter Cody Bellstrom, easygoing bisexual musician, who is happy to initiate Brent in the ways of gay sex. Brent now has a new problem: he realizes he’s gay and no one in his life knows it. Cody tires of hiding their relationship, but Brent finds it challenging to come out to family, friends, and especially to Graham. In the end, Brent must confront the truth of where—and with whom—his heart lies.

Wild and Precious by CJane Elliott is one of those books where I wanted to either issue no rating at all or multiple ratings for various elements because at 80 pages this author has done so many things right that the parts where that irritate or pull the story down just don’t count as much for me as they might with others.

First, I’m going to start with my largest possible author peril of them all, the location of Washington, DC.  CJane Elliot knows Washington, DC.  This story is crammed full of the right streets and locations (yes, I knew where they are/were) and I can’t tell  you how often that doesn’t happen. Jets land in Bethesda..not  Oh, the howlers I’ve read.  So to have an author get it right?  Bonus points! Handing out the gold stars now.

I like the use of a poem, The Summer Day by Mary Oliver, that’s a lovely touch and an element that will flow through the story. I very much thought the author did a thorough job with her characterizations given the short amount of story.  Brent was a treasure. I enjoyed Brent’s sexual awakening and his easy relationships with his boss and friends.  The same goes for Cody Bellstrom, the easy going musician and his two amazing women friends.  They were an especially strong couple.

Graham was the lesser of the three individuals, and that was due to his position in the story, an irritation for some (including me).  I think that will also impact how most readers will feel about the twisting relationships and who ended up with who.  Most readers go into a story with the expectation that the couple they meet first off is the couple they end with.  Is that a reasonable expectation?  Does love always work that way?  What happens when the answer is no and the people in question are better off that way?  An even more serious question.  Perhaps one not many romance readers want to answer.  I found the shift between relationships uneven and thought it hurt the story because of the imbalance.

At 80 pages, its worth taking a different look at how one man found his sexuality and true love…and sent another one his path to his own. Yes, there is a sequel to this book, There You Are by CJane Elliott.  Look for my review soon.  Yes, I loved it.

Cover Art by AngstyG.  I don’t know about the cover.  It screams politicians and teenagers to me for some reason instead of musicians and hip music writers.  Just doesn’t work.
