A Stella Advent Calendar Review Day 10: Traditions by Ann Anderson

RATING 4,25 out of 5 stars

traditions-by-ann-andersonWhen Marcus and James started dating a few years ago, James invited Marcus home to spend the holidays with his close, Christmas-loving family. Marcus quickly realized once was enough, and since then, he’s stayed behind.

But this year will be different. Though the festivity and chaos make Marcus uncomfortable, he loves James, and he’s decided to put aside his unease so they can spend Christmas together—even if it means losing his hotel room to one of James’s siblings, braving the cold to go caroling, and battling the crowds so the children can visit Santa. It’ll all be worth it if Marcus can take his place in the family’s traditions—and maybe begin a new tradition for the two of them.

Traditions by Ann Anderson was my first book by this author and one of my favorite stories of this year DSP Advent Calendar. I love reading about established couples cause it can be easy to find a HEA but it’s harder to make it works during the years. It’s good to know how two people met and how they achieved their HEA, sometimes it’s better to know what happens later.

I liked Marcus and James’ story. James’ family is huge and a little too much in the Christmas mood, with too many lights to hang, too many carols to hear and sing and too many presents to gift. That is what scared Marcus the first Christmas he spent with them as James’ boyfriend, so much he avoided  joining them in the last years. But it’s a family full of love and this year Marcus has a plan he can act only with the help of James’ father.

A very good and sweet story. Plus I loved the ending, being a romantic at heart, it was a winner to me.

Highly recommended.

The cover art by Paul Richmond is simply amazing as everything he does.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have E.J. Russell here today talking about Gideon, one of the characters in Clickbait and the Geeklandia series.  Welcome, E.J.!

~

Gideon: A Peek Before Clickbait

Clickbait is actually the second book in my Geeklandia series about a group of friends in Portland—roommates Charlie, Gideon, and Lindsay, their sidecar friend Toshiko—and their search for romance, wherein geeks pair with non-geeks, much to everyone’s astonishment. Gideon, one of the co-heroes of Clickbait, made his grand entrance in the first book, Lost in Geeklandia, where he helps his BFF Charlie overcome her gawkitude and land her man. (Charlie appears in Clickbait as well, as do Toshiko and Lindsay—who’s the sister of Gideon’s co-hero, Alex.)

This is a deleted scene from Lost in Geeklandia, where Gideon (in his Noel Coward-inspired red brocade dressing gown) tries to prep Charlie for her next interaction with her childhood friend and later nemesis, Daniel (whom Gideon refers to as He-man). She has thirty days to turn Daniel into her boyfriend or lose the chance at her dream job—and the clock is ticking.

Gideon tapped his fork on the empty Tupperware bowl. “Attention, please. Back to He-man. Tell me you at least managed a good-night kiss.”

Charlie’s cheeks heated as if she’d dry-roasted them along with the peanuts in the snack smorgasbord. “Of course I didn’t. We’re talking about Daniel Shawn. It would be easier for me to manage a good-night kiss from Chris Pine.”

“Charles, Charles, Charles. Whatever am I going to do with you? Stop thinking of him as a threat and think of him as an opportunity.” He popped off the barstool. “Let’s SWOT this.”

Lindsay stopped mashing avocado and wiped her forehead with the back of one wrist, her expression troubled. “I know you’re trying to help, Gideon, but do you really think it’s okay for Charlie to hit Daniel?”

He patted her cheek. “S-W-O-T, darling, not S-W-A-T. Strength, weakness, opportunity, threat. Standard management exercise, as Charles would know if she’d taken any business classes amid all the technobabble.”

“It’s hard to take you seriously as a management consultant when you’re dressed like Raul Julia as Gomez Addams,” Charlie grumbled.

“Gomez wore a smoking jacket, not a dressing gown. Stop focusing on inconsequentials.”

Gideon plucked the magnetized dry erase marker off the refrigerator and slashed a grid on the whiteboard they used for their grocery list. In giant letters, he scrawled an S and a W across the top row. “This represents your internal organization. Whatever you perceive as your own.” He added an O and a T down the left side. “This represents the Other. The outer world. Things you don’t control.”

“I’m not sure I control anything.”

“Stop it. See.” He pointed to each letter with the marker. “Strength. Weakness. Opportunity. Threat. Your weakness is this unaccountable need you have to hide your talents under a virtual bushel. Your strengths are legion, but when it comes to Daniel, you forget that you are a smart woman and act like a freaking moron.”

Charlie glared at him. “Don’t you have a hot date to get to?”

Gideon’s gaze flew to the clock above the sink. “God. I’m late. Only concern about your sex life could distract me from my own.” He smacked the marker back on the refrigerator. “Think about it. There’ll be a test later.”

He disappeared down the hall in a billow of red satin.

About Clickbait

After the disastrous ending of his first serious relationship, Gideon Wallace cultivated a protective—but fabulously shiny—outer shell to shield himself from Heartbreak 2.0. Besides, romance is so not a priority for him right now. All his web design prospects have inexplicably evaporated, and to save his fledgling business, he’s been compelled to take a hands-on hardware project—as in, his hands on screwdrivers, soldering irons, and needle-nosed pliers. God. Failure could actually be an option.

Journeyman electrician Alex Henning is ready to leave Gideon twisting in the wind after their run-ins both on and off the construction site. Except, like a fool, he takes pity on the guy and offers to help. Never mind that between coping with his dad’s dementia and clocking all the overtime he can finagle, he has zero room in his life for more complications.

Apparently, an office build-out can lay the foundation for a new relationship. Who knew? But before Alex can trust Gideon with the truth about his fragile family, he has to believe that Gideon’s capable of caring about more than appearances. And Gideon must learn that when it comes to the heart, it’s content—not presentation—that matters.

About Glass Tidings

Eddie Rodrigues doesn’t stay in one place long enough to get attached. The only time he broke that rule, things went south fast. Now he’s on the road again, with barely enough cash in his pocket to hop a bus to Texas after his (sort-of-stolen) car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, Midwest, USA.

He’s fine. He’ll manage. Until he watches that girl get hit by a car and left to die.

Local shop owner Grayson Croft isn’t in the habit of doing people any favors. But even a recluse can’t avoid everyone in a town as small as Clear Lake. And when the cop who played Juliet to your Romeo in the high school play asks you to put up her key witness for the night, you say yes.

Now Gray’s got a grouchy glass artist stomping around his big, empty house, and it turns out that he . . . maybe . . . kind of . . . likes the company.

But Eddie Rodrigues never sticks around.

Unless a Christmas shop owner who hates the season can show an orphan what it means to have family for the holidays.

A Stella Advent Calendar Review Day 7: The Stockings Were Hung by Cassie Sweet

RATING: 3.5 out of 5 stars

the-stockings-were-hungHill hates Christmas.

The shoppers. The cheer. The drama. All of it.

Each holiday season is a painful reminder that seven years before, his lover, Drew, walked out of his life and moved across the country, leaving Hill like a cup of rotten eggnog. Now Drew is back and wants Hill to put a little jingle in his bells. Well, not this Scrooge.

Drew admits he moved to get away from Hill—but not for the reasons Drew gave him all those years ago. Some of his best memories are of Christmases he celebrated with Hill, and he wants nothing more than to spend a little holly jolly with the only man he’s ever loved. However, getting Hill to agree to a reunion is going to take a Christmas miracle.

I’m a huge fan of “second chance at love” stories so I was very enthusiastic to read The Stockings Were Hung by Cassie Sweet. And I liked it, it was my first book by this author and I already have my eyes on a couple of stories by her. I found this new holiday release engaging with well defined characters, even the secondary ones, plus a too cute dog. It could have easily been the perfect story, the one with all the elements I enjoy reading about. There was just a couple of problems: first of all, I struggled to connect with Drew and understand his reasons for leaving Hill seven years before (and he took his time to come back and say he’s still in love with Hill). Then the MCs didn’t really end up together, it was clear it was going to happen but it’s not actually on page. And I wanted to see them together, I would have preferred even just a couple of scenes more, it left me a little disappointed. That said, The Stockings Were Hung is a good holiday story and I wanted to reward the writing part with my rating.

The cover art by L.C. Chase is very sweet.

A MelanieM Review: A Christmas Kiss by Annabelle Jacobs

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

a-christmas-kill-by-annabelle-jacobsKeeping secrets from your best friend isn’t right, but it’s easier than admitting you’ve fallen in love with him.

Sharing a late-night kiss with his best friend, Alex, is Riley’s dream come true. Waking up to discover Alex was too drunk to remember anything is more like a nightmare. Scared the truth could destroy their friendship, Riley keeps quiet and pretends nothing happened.

Alex can’t shake the feeling that he said or did something stupid on their group’s drunken weekend away—why else would Riley be avoiding him? Although the explanation he finally gets sounds plausible, Riley’s still acting strange, and trying to figure out why that is unearths emotions Alex has worked hard to bury.

Riley knows not telling Alex how he feels is probably selfish, but he wants one last normal Christmas before he has to come clean and face the potential fallout.

He should have known it wouldn’t be that easy.

I’m always up for a  holiday story and one about friends and love?  Absolutely on board twice over!  Annabelle Jacobs story, A Christmas Kiss,  starts with a drunken night and a shared bed.   For one man its everything he ever hoped for, for the other?  A blurry haze of memories he can’t quite get a hold of.  And for the reader?  A sometimes frustrating batch of lovely men, missed connections, and “why don’t you talk to him!”.  Truly, I spent half the book wanting to wap a miserable Riley into talking into a clearly miserable friend who missed him.

Jacobs does lay the groundwork for Riley’s actions and yet, to a degree, he still ends up frustrating not only his friends but this reader with his inaction.

Alex, a little more of an unknown quantity than Riley, is still a wonderful man and I found myself warming up to  him quickly.  Once the talking commences, and the frustration falls away, that holiday spirit of wonder and love drifts into place and A Christmas Kiss fulfills its promise.  Want another friends to lovers sweet, holiday romance?  A Christmas Kiss by Annabelle Jacobs just might be the story for you.

Cover art is ok, I would have hoped for something more relevant to the story than  just your male torso.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Wrapped Together (Portland Heat #5) by Annabeth Albert

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

wrapped-together-by-annabeth-albertIn the bustling restaurants, shops, and cafés of Portland, Oregon, things really heat up for the hard-working men behind the scenes when the holidays come into town . . .

For a stationery store owner, the holidays are great for business. But for Hollis Alcott, Christmas reminds him of the tragic events of three years past, and the last thing he wants to do is take part in Portland’s over-abundance of festive cheer. But Sawyer Murphy, a hunky gift shop owner whose brother is married to Hollis’s sister, has made it his mission to pluck Hollis out of his holiday blues. And his plan is beginning to work. Wrapped in the warm glow of newfound passion, the former business rivals hit up Portland’s finest holiday traditions—and Hollis’s icy attitude begins to melt like snowflakes on his tongue. But he isn’t sure he can trust anyone with the only gift he has—his heart—without breaking it like an antique ornament. Unless he can find the courage to take a leap with the one lover he never expected .

Annabeth Albert swings her wonderful Portland Heat  series into the holiday  season with Wrapped Together, a joyful mix of twins, seasonal angst and hot sexy romance with a kink!

It all starts with the mournful Hollis of course.  A twin himself, unlike his sister with her family to anchor her, he finds himself unable to move forward after the death of their parents.  All Christmas does is remind him of his loss and its quietly had devastating effects on what little social life he had.  Now there’s none.   Albert does a beautiful job of painting the portrait of this grieving man with his spare elegant shop of pens and stationary.  Then the boisterous Sawyer Murphy comes bounding in with all the enthusiasm of a golden retriever and I could see him just as clear as he deliberately barges into Hollis’ isolation.

While you might want to peg this as a enemies to lovers, its not quite that simple (it never is in an Annabeth Albert story).  These two men and their siblings have long been intertwined and remain so to the present day as Sawyer’s twin brother is married to Hollis’ twin sister.  Oh  what a marvelous tangle Albert has to unwrap here.

Of course its not just the pain of the deaths of the Alcott twins parents, but much more to take into account.  There’s a holiday bet, holiday store windows and a gradual emotional thawing that hits so close to the heart that you will find yourself clutching the Kindle or whatever device tight in happiness.

The sex scenes are hot, a cat who answers to the name Bunny to Hollis’ consternation and so much more.  Its a jam packed literary stocking just for all lovers of contemporary romance, fans of the Portland Heat series and Annabeth Albert, all rolled into one.

Do I recommend it?  Absolutely.  I love this series and wish I was sitting in the Peoples Cup getting ready to wander the streets of Portland looking at the  store fronts and gazing at the window displays.  Tis the season for holiday stories!  Put this into your holiday reading pile as soon as possible!

Cover art is an absolute delight.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Advent Calendar Review Day 5: Krampus Hates Christmas by Andi Van

Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5

krampus-hates-christmasThis was a highly enjoyable story about real life Krampus, the twin brother of Nicholas, aka, Santa Claus.  Krampus, aka Karl, wants to help Nick by ferreting out the kids who’ve been bad from those who’ve been good. After all, traditionally that’s his role, but the Council won’t allow it because Karl doesn’t have the true Christmas spirit.  So Nick’s husband, Noel, uses the magic powers he was granted when he married Nick and places a spell around Krampus so that he looks human. He then plants him in the apartment building they own in San Diego and tells Krampus his true nature and appearance will revert on Krampusnacht, December 5th.  He has close to three months to find his Christmas spirit so he can approach the board for a change in their decision.

His new neighbor is a cute, older guy who gives new meaning to the words Christmas spirit. Forty-three-year-old Lewis owns a little Christmas store in a nearby town where his family also runs a pumpkin and Christmas tree farm.  Over the course of the fall holidays, readers are treated to the dynamic that develops between the seven-foot-plus tall Krampus and the five-foot-something Lewis.  Their attraction simmers and eventually blossoms to love, but Karl’s true nature might just tear them apart for good once it’s revealed.

I enjoyed the story immensely. It was very creative and fun, and I also found it a learning experience as I got to meet Krampus and his legend for the first time.

The secondary characters were great as well, and I’m so happy that Lewis’s roomie, Jerry, also got to have his wish granted by Santa. An all-around treat, this one is definitely a put-a-smile-on-your-face holiday story.

A VVivacious Review: Serendipity Box Set by Liam Livings-Serendipity Series by Liam Livings

Rating – 2 Stars out of 5

serendity-box-setThese three stories follow David and Christian’s relationship over the course of one year, from their serendipitous meeting to the challenges they face while getting to know each other.

As David and Christian grow closer, they have to work together to change Christian’s parents’ views on their relationship. As things get worse, it seems like Christian is making up his own fake version of their relationship in order to please his parents and when David breaks his ankle, things come to a head as Christian’s brand of love gets to be too oppressive. In the face of such overwhelming problems will these two make it?

Christmas Serendipity – 1.5 Stars

This story is haunted by the ghost of exes past. This story is divided into five chapters and in all of them our narrator “David” manages to squeeze in references of him. Now him has no name as far as this story goes, maybe he will actually be mentioned by name in the next two stories, a fact of truly questionable importance but in this story he managed quite successfully to subvert the romance. Personally I question the author’s intentions of creating this unknown big bad ex, the fact that we don’t know his name has created an unwanted mystery around this character and frankly having his pronoun dragged through every aspect of this story truly spoiled the story for me.

Leaving the ex aside (God knows why because the story never managed too), I didn’t quite like David’s character. He seemed very uncertain and came across as calculating, even though it felt unintentional. This may have been the result of the leftover trauma from his douche of an ex but there is only a point till you can justify a person’s behaviour as being a result of circumstances and for me David crossed that point.

The things I liked in this story would have to include Christian. He was such a sweetheart and I really felt bad for him being at outs with his parents regarding his coming-out and I actually sympathized with his feelings of being left out.

Christian & David have potential. They can be an amazing couple however this particular story just teased at that potential. The weird part is that instead of having a continuous development the author kind of first went hot and heavy and then slow and steady, something which was confusing to me because when they went from hot to slow, it felt like things became less intense and emotional.

Serendipity Develops – 2.5 Stars

This one is definitely more interesting than Christmas Serendipity. But I doubt anybody could have foreseen this series of events. This story has a decidedly darker tone than the previous ones because as it turns out Christian has some pretty serious psychological problems and he almost ends up smothering David with his love.

Serendipity Develops deals with Christian’s attempts for reconciliation with his parents and how his attempts to make David and him appear like a straight couple take a turn for the worse and Christian kind of suffers from a mental breakdown.

This story is very invested in its plot line because as stated above a lot is happening. Christian tries to bend over backwards trying to accommodate his parents while David’s reluctance seems to hinder his relationship with Christian’s parents. Personally I wouldn’t have minded David’s reluctance as much as I did because Christian’s parents were definitely not very welcoming themselves but David’s reluctance seemed to carry within itself a grain of indifference, like he couldn’t understand why Christian wanted his parents to be a part of his life. This would have been a perfect time to get a look at David’s own family situation to maybe make us better understand David as a character and his response to this particular situation but there was nothing of that sort done here.

I liked David better he seemed less unsure and more assured despite circumstances. I feel for Christian and I wish we could get his perspective especially regarding his parents and his illness. As a couple Christian and David seem to have survived the storm that I don’t think many new relationships could have survived but I can’t quite decipher what their relationship is made of.

Also, I loved Tony in this book. He was a much needed breath of fresh air.

This story is better than the first but personally I think that there were a lot of things that were started in this book that could do with more exploration and explanation and I am hoping the last one can bring that closure.

The Next Christmas – 3 Stars

This story tells the story of the Christmas that David and Christian spend at Christian’s parents’ house. This story is the best of the three probably because Christian and David are more settled in this story, more sure of themselves and each other.

I liked David’s journey throughout this story, of how he is reluctant to go to Christian’s parents’ house because he fears a hard time, how he convinces himself that not going will be better and how he eventually catapults and decides to go. Also this was kind of symbolic of how far David and Christian’s relationship had come.

I liked how the book dealt with the issue of Christian’s dad, Peter, not being accepting of their relationship and how he doesn’t understand it. I liked how he eventually does come around and how David, Christian and Gloria (Christian’s mother) work together to bring Peter around. On the other hand it felt too easy and it wasn’t very satisfying. I thought with the way things were progressing it would take more time.

Also there was no mention of Christian’s mental breakdown in the previous book and what I didn’t like was that there was no discussion about how it could possibly affect their relationship.

Overall these three stories make for an okay read.
