An Alisa Review: Slow Birth (Heat of Love #2.5) by Leta Blake

Rating:  2 stars out of 5

Jason and Vale are back in this side story set in the Heat of Love universe!

A romantic getaway turns dramatic when an unexpected heat descends on Vale, leaving Jason with no choice but to act. The resulting pregnancy is dangerous for Vale and terrifying for Jason, but with the help of friends and family, they choose to embrace their uncertain future. Together they find all the love, joy, and heat they need to guide them through!

While this story follows the characters from Slow Heat, it will be most enjoyable if read directly after Alpha Heat, as it takes place contemporaneously with that book.

This book just did not hit the mark for me.  I mean I read Alpha heat so I know how it all works out in the end but was hoping for more of an in depth story.  I felt what I got was way too much sex and too much emphasis on them being Érosgápe.

I understand that pregnancy is supposed to make omegas horny but it seemed all Jason and Vale did was have sex for a good 75% of the book and I can only read about how great their ass or cock feels before it’s just too repetitive and too much, I mean Bitter Heat had a pregnant omega and it wasn’t focused this much on the sex.  I had trouble with them using their Érosgápe connection as the reasoning for everything like no other couple who are not Érosgápe wouldn’t have the type of connection at all and I felt it degraded Xan and Urho’s relationship from Alpha Heat even as they were supporting them.

I felt bad for Jason throughout the whole book because everyone blamed him and put everything on his shoulders if something went wrong (like the unexpected heat), like Vale wasn’t a person and couldn’t make his own decisions, and I don’t know it didn’t help with my frustration at all.  The book was well written as usual I just felt it went off in the wrong direction.

The cover art by Dar Albert is very nice and I like that it is the same models that were used for Slow Heat.

An Alisa Review: Stepbrother’s Secret (Men of Meadowfall #6) by Anna Wineheart

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

What’s worse than losing the love of your life? Answer: Finding out that he’s now (1) a single dad and a widower, (2) your business rival, and (3) still very much your stepbrother.

Lonely and estranged from his family, Olivier wishes for love. His music shop is sinking—no thanks to Total Sounds, the new music chain in town. But that’s not all: The alpha stepbrother he’d grown up loving? Eric’s moving back to Meadowfall with his baby girl, and Ollie’s life is officially a mess.

Eric has two goals: One, to raise his late wife’s daughter. Two, to ensure that Total Sounds beats out all its competition, especially that one shop, Olivier’s Strings. Except the owner of Olivier’s Strings is an omega from his past—someone Eric had been truly, madly, deeply in love with. The very omega who had broken Eric’s heart right outside their family home, and, unbeknownst to Eric, is still in love with him.

To escape the grief of his wife’s passing, Eric confronts Olivier about their past… except Ollie’s in heat.

One simmering encounter turns into another, and that new honey scent of Ollie’s… It means Olivier is pregnant. Eric has his suspicions. Ollie insists that the baby isn’t Eric’s. Could it be…?

It took my so much longer to start reading this book than I wanted because, well, life but once I started I just couldn’t put it down and probably stayed up way later than I should have.  I have loved this series so far and this book was no exception especially since I read the teaser a while ago.

Oh man, my heart broke for Ollie and how he was willing to give up his happiness to make sure Eric was happy.  Though Eric easily would only see what he wanted to see at times, I think he had to really grow up throughout this story.

And, ugh, Eric’s mom and Ollie’s stepmom, Wendy, was just horrible, Ollie dealt with it and just stayed away but once Eric brought it out in the open they at least had the support of their brothers, though their Dad just pushed it under the table and seems to decide that ignoring it like he has for years will make it go away.  He kinda comes around in the end but other than Wendy being absent there is no real conclusion on that front.  But it looks like we will probably be seeing their brother Cole again in another book, so excited to see the series continuing.

I loving the new cover art style the author is using, it doesn’t make the stories look as fluffy as before.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: His First Family by Victoria Sue

Rating 5 stars out of 5

Lorne Austen was relieved of his duties as omega and nanny on the day the alpha’s youngest children, twins, turned 15. He wasn’t even allowed to say goodbye—just booted out and sent on his way with his meager belongings. An omega’s life isn’t wonderful in this world and Lorne, though a sweetheart, is now 32 and past his prime, so his only hope is to find another job and make it on his own. Caught in a snowstorm, he’s found by Johnathan Owens, a doctor who is on personal leave after breaking off with his fiancé and taking care of his grandmother.

The two ride out the storm in each other’s arms in bed, but Lorne disappears the next morning. His reasoning is that Johnathan is too sweet and he doesn’t want to possibly become attached. Imagine his surprise when six months later, he arrives at a medical clinic seeking nutrients to help him survive his unexpected pregnancy and he finds Dr. Owens—the father of his babies.

The story of their relationship is somewhat complex, with the monkey wrench primarily thrown at Lorne by Johnathan’s ex-fiancé who is also a doctor. Unmated omegas aren’t allowed to keep their babies in this world and though it seems a simple solution, Johnathan hesitates to contract with Lorne—for other reasons, but of course, Lorne misunderstands. There’s lots of angst here. But there’s more complexity, as well, as the author builds the world of these alphas and omegas—not shifters. It’s the same world as the story of His First Christmas, another warm and fuzzy feelings book I enjoyed by this author.

I needed this story today! It gave me the perfect escape when I decided to focus on something pleasant. The author always grabs me by the feels early in a story and develops characters I can love. I know there are a number of readers who don’t care for mpreg stories but this one was more about the worry a couple faces when it looks like their baby (or babies in this case) may not make it through pregnancy, and the fear faced after the birth when the premie is struggling for survival in the neonatal unit.

Eventually the five of them become a family but it sure is an angsty push and pull along the way. I definitely recommend it to lovers of MM romance with memorable characters.

Cover by Jay Aheer features two men about to kiss and in the lower part of the panel, three babies sitting with backs to the camera represent the babies in this story. The cover and blurb sold me on starting this story, and the author made it very satisfying.

Heat can be sold but love is earned.

In a world where omegas sell their heats for profit, Adrien is a university student in need of funding. With no family to fall back on, he reluctantly allows the university’s matcher to offer his virgin heat for auction online. Anxious, but aware this is the reality of life for all omegas, Adrien hopes whoever wins his heat will be kind.

Heath—a wealthy, older alpha—is rocked by the young man’s resemblance to his dead lover, Nathan. When Heath discovers Adrien is Nathan’s lost son from his first heat years before they met, he becomes obsessed with the idea of reclaiming a piece of Nathan.

Heath buys Adrien’s heat with only one motivation: to impregnate Adrien, claim the child, and move on. But their undeniable passion shocks him. Adrien doesn’t know what to make of the handsome, mysterious stranger he’s pledged his body to, but he’s soon swept away in the heat of the moment and surrenders to Heath entirely.

Once Adrien is pregnant, Heath secrets him away to his immense and secluded home. As the birth draws near, Heath grows to love Adrien for the man he is, not just for his connection to Nathan. Unaware of Heath’s past with his omega parent and coming to depend on him heart and soul, Adrien begins to fall as well.

But as their love blossoms, Nathan’s shadow looms. Can Heath keep his new love and the child they’ve made together once Adrien discovers his secrets?

A desperate young alpha. An older alpha with a hero complex. A forbidden love that can’t be denied.

Young Xan Heelies knows he can never have what he truly wants: a passionate romance and happy ever after with another alpha. It’s not only forbidden by the prevailing faith of the land, but such acts are illegal.

Urho Chase is a middle-aged alpha with a heartbreaking past. Careful, controlled, and steadfast, his friends dub him old-fashioned and staid. When Urho discovers a dangerous side to Xan’s life that he never imagined, his world is rocked, and he’s consumed by desire. The carefully sewn seams that held him together after the loss of his omega and son come apart – and so does he.

But to love each other and make a life together, Xan and Urho risk utter ruin. With the acceptance and support of Caleb, Xan’s asexual and aromantic omega and dear friend, they must find the strength to embrace danger and build the family they deserve.

This gay-romance novel by Leta Blake is the second in the Slow Heat universe. It has a strong, happy ending and a well-crafted non-shifter omegaverse. It features alphas, betas, omegas, male pregnancy, heat, and knotting. No cheating. Content warning for brief sexual violence.
