Synopsis
A bounty hunter’s partners to lovers’ story.
The hunt is on… and he’s the prey.

Bradford (Ford) King was sure he had the rest of his life mapped out. Though he was no longer a SEAL Lieutenant, his brother was home safe and he had a job that still allowed him to satisfy his hunger for hunting bad guys. Life was simple, no distractions or complications – at age forty-six – that’s all Ford wanted. What he didn’t want was his work partner, sniper/watchman, Dana, giving him s**t all the time.

Dana Cadby had grown up labeled a roughneck from the wrong side of the tracks. He’d fought, scrounged, and survived despite a father that constantly told him he couldn’t. Dana pulled himself up by his own boot straps and made a name for himself in the marksman community. He’d been Duke’s bounty watchman for five years. It was his job to ensure their safety, watch their backs. At thirty-three, he was trusted, well respected by his peers, his bosses, his friends… so why couldn’t he earn the same respect from his partner?

Dana knew he was bisexual before he graduated high school. He also knew he was attracted to the huge, 6’3”, SEAL from the moment he and his brother came to join their team. It wasn’t easy for him to tamp down his immediate reaction to Ford’s thick muscles, full beard, and dark eyes. Still, Dana exhibited nothing but professionalism towards him, not wanting to make his ‘straight’ partner uncomfortable.

After Dana took back his ex-girlfriend, he’d noticed an intensification in Ford’s bad attitude. One that turned aggressive and downright antagonistic, and Dana was damned if he’d just lay down and take it. He was gonna make that man respect him if it was the last thing he did.

When Duke sends Dana and Ford out to track down their most dangerous bounty yet, they both embrace the fact that they make one hell of a team… but they fight tooth and nail against the powerful intimacy brewing between them.
Beware: When Ford and Dana connect, no fugitive can hide from the hunter and his watchman.

This story is a part of a series but can stand alone. It does not end on a cliffhanger and has a HEA.
Disclaimer: This book is about MM romance, albeit there is a very brief MF scene.

Excerpt
Dana
Sway talked around a mouthful of burger, juice dripping down his chin that he didn’t bother to wipe away. He may be pretty but his eating habits were all manly. “I’ll tell my mom you’re coming to see her real soon. Now, moving on. What’s got those dark spots under your eyes and your forehead crinkled?”
“A man.”
Sway’s big eyes widened comically. “A man! Oh wait… wait… don’t say another word.” Sway ordered two shots of Patrón and their third beers.
“Damn, man. I’m not depressed about it.” Dana smiled, thanking the waitress for the fresh glasses she placed in front of their half-eaten dinners.
“These are celebration shots!” Sway laughed and held up his shot glass. “If you’re even considering dating a guy again, I’m celebrating.”
While they drank top shelf tequila and ate their burgers Dana told his best friend all about his new crush. And yes, that’s exactly what it was… a crazy crush. He admitted to the nervousness in his stomach when he knew he was about to see Ford. The sparring match that had ended with him pinned and completely submissive to Ford’s control. He told him how Ford insisted he deserved better than Jessica. Even described Ford’s look from his cropped cut, to how big his boots were. He confessed to the way he infuriated Dana by calling him kid and telling him to grow up.
“Sounds like he’s flirting back to me.” Sway chuckled around a deep belch. He hit his fist against his chest and let another go. “So, you gonna go for it?”
“I don’t know, man. He’s pretty wound up.”
“What do you mean? You said he’s military, does he have some PTSD issues?”
Dana shook his head. “No, not that I know of. He works fine around the crazy shit we have to deal with. Even his brother, who’s mute, does fine. They seem to be okay, compared to how a lot of those guys come back. He’s so driven and professional. Ford was like the shit when he was enlisted, too. He had rank and he saved lives. Maybe I’m overshooting, here. He’s kinda awesome.” Dana stopped and hid his blush around taking a large drink of water when he realized he was gushing over Ford, and his friend was looking quite amused as he did.
“You’re kinda awesome too, D. That’s why I don’t like Jess, because she makes you feel like you aren’t. You pulled yourself up by your bootstraps despite how your dad constantly came down on you. You can shoot like no one’s business and you’re recognized for it. Has Ford seen your marksman awards?” Sway waved his hand in the air, continuing his point, not looking for a response. “You save lives too, every day. Keeping those batshits off the streets. I think Ford probably recognizes that. The issue is not if you’re equally matched, like you questioned with you and Jess. The question is can you really have something with him? Can this actually go the distance? You’ve had quite a bit of fun in the sex department, if you know what I mean, no shortage of bunnies over the last couple years.

Synopsis

The boys are back and fiercer than ever!

“We were a unit tonight, moving as one. Even apart, we are deadly, but when combined – we are f**kin’ unstoppable.” ~~ God ~~

Atlanta’s notorious narcotics task force is at it again. They are stronger, bigger, and better than ever. Especially when a city councilman sends RECON Marine, Edwin Steele – who’s been blacklisted from his Oakland department – to join the team. God and Day weren’t recruiting. They have a lot on their plates, like the fact they’re supposed to be getting married soon. They don’t have the time or the patience to integrate a decorated war hero with a slight chip on his shoulder into their well-oiled machine.

A hothead that’s uncontrollable and terrible with authority… but wasn’t that their team motto?

Steele was ready to hang up his shield. He was done fighting with bigoted bastards that couldn’t respect the job. He was good at fighting; he just needed the right team to fight with. When his uncle – City Councilman, Rasmus Steele – shows him a video of God’s team in action, he knows right away, it’s where his nephew belongs in order to restore his faith.

Steele pointed to the driver, a behemoth of a man wielding those massive firearms like a true beast… like a soldier. “And him. Who the hell is he?”

That’s your new boss. Lieutenant Cashel Godfrey… they call him… God.”

Steele was skeptical about his new placement, but when he meets God’s technology specialist/computer genius, “Tech,” he’s willing to give it his all, and he definitely shows and proves.

Tech is stunning. His sweater vest and khakis, a stark contrast to the blue-jeaned roughnecks he works with. A beautiful sheep amongst the wolves. Steel thinks there’s no way the brilliant man would be interested in a hardhead like him, but Tech has a few badass hidden talents of his own and manages to surprise him… surprise all of them.

This story is a part of a series but can stand alone. It does not end on a cliffhanger and has a HEA. There are no multiple pairings in this novel.

EXCERPT

The shower area was dark, except for the lights filtering in from the locker area, but God could see steam rising from the last stall. His boots were loud on the hard floor and he didn’t hesitate for a second to yank the thin plastic back and step inside the hot stall. Day’s back was to him, his hands braced on the tiles in front of him, his head hanging low while the hot water pelted his tense neck and shoulders. He never flinched at the intrusion, as if he’d been expecting God any second.

I’m okay, Cashel. I’m not hurt,” Day just barely whispered over the sound of the water before he turned the nozzles to off.

Face me,” God said roughly, his throat thick with emotion.

Day turned around, pushing his hair back off his face. There wasn’t a cut anywhere on his body, only a slight bruise on his right shoulder and a little discoloration on his temple. Day leaned against the stall like he was exhausted and God had to touch him. His touch was firm, but his lover was used to that. He pressed in close, breathing in the smell of Day’s favorite shampoo and his body wash. God ran his nose down Day’s temple, gripping him around his waist and running his calloused palms up his sides, listening for any grunts of discomfort. Day didn’t make a sound. No bruised ribs. God used every one of his senses, including taste, to check Day over. When God got to Day’s shoulders, he squeezed them and heard the hiss Day tried but failed to hold back.

God growled and slammed both his hands against the stall on either side of Day’s head. “I was late. I was fuckin’ late.”

I knew you’d do this. I knew you’d blame yourself. You did your job, Cash. You kept the Enforcers close. They got there in time.” Day reached up and gripped God’s massive biceps, easing his hands over his shoulders and up to his neck. When he leaned in, God let Day clamp down on the back of his neck – relishing the strength of his partner – and bring their mouths together in a fierce kiss. A kiss that made a hundred apologies and answered with even more forgiveness. When they finally broke apart, both of them were panting heavily, and God wrapped Day tight in his arms, letting the contact bring him back from the edge.

Goddamnit. I was so scared, Leo,” God admitted, no longer afraid to be vulnerable in front of this one man.

Me too,” Day whispered.

Day let God hold him as long as he needed to. As long as it took for him to know that he was safe.

Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5

“That’s your new boss.

Steel thinks there’s no way the brilliant man would be interested in a hardhead like him, but Tech has a few badass hidden talents of his own and manages to fool him… fool all of them.

Nothing Special V is two books in one. We get Steele’s and Tech’s story. Plus, side stories from all the previous couples. It takes a moment to get used to all the POV changes, but the author did an excellent job keeping them organized and relevant. All the voices combined gives us the best look into the futures of God’s and Day’s men.

The first meeting between Tech and Steele set the pace for the story. It shows the reader how well-equipped they are to deal with each other and how good they fit in the team. Reading both of their thoughts and feelings also clue us into the path they need to follow to be together. They needed to grow stronger individually to be a couple.

The combination between meaningful smexy scenes and the action-packed plot lines create the perfect balance of enjoyment. These men are more than their batches, they’re a family that works like a well-oiled machine. But under everything else, they are strong because of the men at their side. Each couple and their love make them more than lethal.

If you are a fan of these men, you’re going to love the extra scenes with them as a group and the individual couples. The whole thing works together and sets the stage for even more couples to come.

And the bonus story at the end of the book is a perfect five. I love the little short story about the youngest couple in their bunch.

The cover by Jay Aheer is a compilation of the covers from the other books in the series, together with the new additions—Steele & Tech.

About The Secrets in My Scowl

Sparks ignite and tempers flare when a sexy, optimistic wedding planner moves his business in across the hall from a jilted, divorce lawyer’s practice.

“Look smart ass. This is the last time I’m going to remind you about breaking sections of the lease. If there’s a next time, I won’t stop until you and your frilly, white wedding shit is thrown out of here. Do you got it?!”
Wylde looked in Jacob’s pained eyes and answered in his deep voice. “Yeah, counselor. I got it.”

From high school, up until he became a successful attorney Jacob Snowden was convinced that love had it out for him. “Everyone left,” were the words he lived by. His mother, his high school sweetheart, his father, and his fiancé, all left Jacob just when he felt it was safe to let down his guard. Not any longer. Jacob was a determined man, set at keeping people at a distance. If his six foot one, military-made body didn’t scare people off, his permanent scowl surely did. At almost forty, Jacob’s social life was non-existent, but he told himself his work fulfilled him. He helped people get out of their loveless marriages. Jacob Snowden was one of the best divorce lawyers on the east coast and was damn proud of it. So, imagine his disdain when a wedding planner moves into the suite directly adjacent to his… an insanely masculine, male wedding planner.

Wylde Sterling had made quite a name for himself in his hometown of Roanoke, Virginia, working for a wedding planner that catered to the elite. He was known for his charm and impeccable taste. Yep, he was incredible at giving couples the wedding of their dreams. But he wanted nothing more than to plan his own. After striking out in love more times than he cared to admit, Wylde decided to start his own business in a new city, hoping Richmond would give him a fresh start. Things started out wonderfully – until he started to piss off the angry divorce attorney next door.

Wylde could see past Jacob’s mean scowl, knowing there was a reason for it. It was the man’s defense mechanism, his means of keeping people away. Everything in Wylde told him to stay away, but he believed Jacob just needed to meet a man who had been hurt as badly as he had.

This story ends in an HEA and does not end on a cliffhanger.

Excerpt

“Get the fuck off me.” Jacob squirmed.

“Not until you stop directing your anger at me.” His neighbor’s voice was rough but somehow comforting.

The fight left Jacob as quickly as it’d come. He was exhausted, he was in pain, and his chest still burned with disappointment. He couldn’t believe he was back in this predicament again… heartbroken. His chest deflated under his neighbor. “Just let me go.”

“No,” Square Jaw snapped, and bit the side of Jacob’s face.

“Augh! Motherfucker!” Jacob yelled, bucking his hips hard, trying to get the idiot off him.

“Calm down, Jacob,” the man panted, blowing his liquor-scented breath against Jacob’s neck. “Whatever that dick did to you… get over it. Because this isn’t you.” His neighbor bore down even harder and a gust of air left Jacob before he could bark an angry retort. “I fuck with you because you are who you are. You walk with a confidence I haven’t seen in a man in a long time. People move out of your way when they see you coming and it only makes you hold your head higher. I admire the hell out of that. That’s why I’m on top of you. This bullshit, this moping you’re doing… it isn’t you, so knock it the fuck off.”

“You don’t know me,” Jacob said with little fight.

“Oh, I know you, Snowden. I also know someone just hurt the fuck out of you. You left feeling like you were on top of the world and returned hours later like your world had just been conquered.” Jacob felt a rough palm on his cheek. “If he doesn’t want you, it’s his fucking loss.”

“I’m not looking for a replacement… ever. So, if you think it’s your lucky day, think again,” Jacob growled. No one had to worry about ever hurting him again, because he wouldn’t give them the chance. He felt the lock click into place over his heart the moment he finished the thought and it soothed him better than anything his neighbor had said.

“There’s that arrogance.” The man smiled victoriously.

Jacob didn’t feel it. He couldn’t feel anything.

“What happened?”

There was no way in hell he was spilling his guts to a stranger. “I’m not telling you shit, man.”

“The name’s Manning, just in case you were wondering. Patrick Manning.”

“I wasn’t wondering.”

“I think you need a better outlet for that anger, counselor.” Patrick dipped his head, but Jacob turned away. He squeezed his eyes shut as the pain hit him hard again. He’d thought he’d have his new fiancé on top of him tonight, not this prick. Jacob groaned heatedly when he felt a hard cock press into his thigh.

“Fucker,” he hissed quietly.

The Secrets in my Scowl had me swooning from the start. I loved reading about Jacob’s past and how it shaped him. His experiences felt real and the author did an excellent job describing the military elements and the settings. I’m glad this part was included in the story and not narrated as a confession by Jacob later on. It lets the reader understand him without labeling him an ass.

Wylde’s introduction was a bit slow. Perhaps because I was still into Jacob’s story and wanted to see more of him. It was almost like starting the story all over again. But waiting for them to meet was worth the wait. It was explosive, luscious, and enough to keep the reader into the possibility of a relationship from there on.

The MCs had great chemistry. They weren’t perfect but worked well together. Their pasts made them who they were and it was nice to see them grow through the story. Their profession might look opposite from each other, but in reality, the author brought them together throughout Wylde’s comfort words to Jacob. Their UST was flawless.

Yes, the ending was a bit cliché, but it’s part of the magic. The story was fun and engaging and included great secondary characters. Patrick is one of my favorites. Emotions ran high, but the angst wasn’t overwhelming. Both main characters are snarky and compassionate on their own way. I’m glad Wylde wasn’t the stereotype wedding planner, and I felt sorry for all his mishaps before he started dating Jacob.

I deducted a quarter of a star because I’m a picky reader. I wanted to know more about the future of Jacob’s high school sweetheart, and a more descriptive encounter during the divorce preceding Jacob’s involved at the end of the story– a middle finger, perhaps? Also, I think the plot line with Jacob’s mom was unnecessary. Overall, these comments are more about me as a reader than the story itself.

Jay Aheer did an amazing job finding the right models for the cover. The composition has all the important elements of the story—which are brought into the perfect balance. The blue hue is a bit bland, but it goes with other covers designed by Jay for the author.

STRW Spotlight Book Excerpt
A guy with black hair and a blond Mohawk wiped the bar top with a rag as he asked him, “What can I get you?”

Llew nodded his head in the direction of the taps. “Budweiser.”

“Regular or tall?”

“Tall.” Llew watched the man pull his drink and set it in front of him. He looked up at Llew for a split second before dropping his eyes. “Four fifty. Or do you want to start a tab?”

Setting a five-dollar bill on the counter was Llew’s answer. He turned and looked out over the dance floor, watching the men move about in the most carefree nature he’d ever seen. Men free to live and do as they wanted. Not a problem in the world. What the fuck am I doing here? Just as Llew was going to down the last of his beer, a small hand brushed over his bicep. He looked down at the fair-skinned fingers before looking up into beautiful green eyes.

“Hello.”

Llew looked at the man who was standing close enough for him to smell his sweet perfume. He wasn’t as young as lot of the guys there. Probably early thirties. He wore a preppy gray and green sweater and blue jeans. His smile was wide and genuine as he slowly rubbed his hand up to Llew’s shoulder.

“My name is Gene. My friends and I saw you come in, and you know what I said as soon as I saw you?”

Llew continued to watch this man, not responding to his questions.

“I said I thought you could use a hug. You look so serious. My friends said I’m crazy, but I have a gift for reading people.”

You don’t want to read my story.

“What’s your name? I’ve never seen you here before.” The guy had moved in even closer to Llew’s side, and was practically whispering in his ear so he didn’t have to yell over the annoying techno music blaring from the five thousand speakers all over the building.

His eyes had seemed to slip shut on their own as he turned his head into the silky skin brushing against his beard. “Llew,” he said, hoarsely.

“Lou… just Lou.” The guy looked at him disbelievingly.

“Llewellyn.” He clarified, his eyes scanning over the lithe chest beneath that sweater.

“Oh. Okay. I gotcha. So how about it, Llew?” Gene brought both hands up and draped them on Llew’s shoulders. “Can you use a hug?”

He let the man pull him closer; his long arms completely over his shoulders and linked behind his head. Llew had to admit it was a really nice hug. It wasn’t the type you’d give a stranger. It was intimate and suggestive. Llew brought one hand up and slid it around the guy’s trim waist. “There. How’s that feel?” Gene’s lips were pressed against his ear while he talked, his hot breath fanning over the side of Llew’s neck. Instead of pulling back and ending the hug, Gene kept him wrapped up. “You’re a very handsome man, Llew. Do you hear that a lot?” Gene chuckled. “Probably all the time.”

When she’s not clicking away at her laptop, she devotes herself to her family—a husband and four children, her two pets, a Maltese dog and her white Siamese cat, ELynn, named after the late, great gay romance author E. Lynn Harris.1450800_225532627620034_2097788792_n

While this is only her seventh novel, she has plenty more to come. So stalk her – she loves that – because the male on male action is just heating up!

A Mika Review: Defined by Deceit by A.E. Via

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Defined by Deceit coverLife isn’t always fair, and that’s something that Llewellyn Gardner knows about first hand. His life was on the fast track until one night of extreme passion changed everything. Now eight years later, he’s still living with the aftershocks of that night. Everywhere he turns or runs, there’s another reminder. What the hell do you do when you try to drown your demons only to find out they can swim?

Shane Smith, Jr. owner of Smith Construction, could see the emotional turmoil within his new employee — it’s why he hired him. There was something about the gorgeous, misunderstood man with the overly expressive eyes that came to their small town with a past no one was willing to overlook. Shane could see the good in Llewellyn, and those eyes of his were a clear window to his soul. Shane wasn’t going to let the man live a future of solitude because his past had been plagued with deceit.

Llewellyn wasn’t sure what to think about Shane. After years of protecting himself from being tricked twice, he was now faced with worry again. What would happen to him if Shane didn’t believe his truth, and walked away? Llewellyn wasn’t sure he’d be able to survive being left alone. Again.

I’m shocked and in awe of this book. I’ll be the first to admit I don’t read this author for her writing skills or plots at all. I strictly went into reading this book because she writes good SMUT. OMG, Tamika, be still with your tongue until you know next time. She has surprised me, with emotions that I haven’t gotten out of her yet. Man the first 50% of this story had me in constant tears. I literally wanted to go to inbred, backwoods Virginia (Just my personal opinion, excuse me if this isn’t you =) ) and rip a new hole in Moss the sixth! I literally wanted to destroy him with everything I had in me. After my initial shock and treatment of Llewellyn I wanted to try to see where this was going to go.

I can’t really say much without giving up the plot. A.E. Via,  if you are reading this please write a book for Ace & Big Waldo!!! Please, I’m begging you. Back to the story, Llew has to get his life together and it’s not easy. I couldn’t imagine being in his shoes. It was so heartbreaking what he went through, but he is a survivor. One thing that surprised me was when he was confronted with his past. He let it go, and his reasoning made sense. Whereas I wanted what Shane wanted, revenge, anger and everything else, but that didn’t matter because Llew is an awesome guy.

Let’s talk about Shane Smith Jr, he gave a guy a chance when the entire world turned his back on him. Shane’s spirit was just a breath of fresh air. Honestly I didn’t think he had a mean bone in his body but he definitely isn’t a pushover. I liked how the relationship between the two progressed. I absolutely loved the scene between Big Daddy and Shane. Their relationship made sense in a way, which I would like to see in more m/m books with the southern states as the setting. The supporting cast was good. Leslie is a great brother; Ms. Pat was good as well. I really am impressed with this book, and can’t wait to see if we get a follow-up!
