Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Brandon Witt here today on his Mapping the Forest tour. Welcome, Brandon!

~

In the previous blog tour stop, I spoke about a ‘contest’ of good intentions that had very positive results. However, there was another ‘contest’ associated with Mapping the Forest where the results weren’t so grand.

I was struggling with naming this novel.  I had the titles of the following four books of the series already figured out, but, for some reason, the name of the first one simply wasn’t coming.

So, I had a brilliant idea.  I held a book-naming contest on Facebook.  I listed a few titles and had people vote.

I don’t remember the rest of the titles, but the winning one was Forsaking the Forest.

One of my beta readers didn’t hold back after reading the book.  They hated the title.  Hated it.

It is a little melodramatic if I’m being honest.  But I just really love the word forsake.  I don’t know what my problem is!

And, the beta pointed out, no one in the book actually forsakes the forest.  They all really like the forest.

In the contestants’ defense, all the titles I listed were atrocious.

So, please consider this my apology if you were one of the readers who participated in the contest.  I’m sorry I gave you horrible names to pick from.  I’m sorry that I broke my word and didn’t keep the atrocious title you picked. I did for a while, saying that I couldn’t go back on the contest. More than one person said I was being an idiot.  Thank the lord for them!

It was my fault.  All my fault.  Not yours.  You’re lovely and beautiful and did nothing to deserve such a dark fate as picking between God-Awful titles.

No one in this book forsaked (forsook) the forest, but I did end up forsaking that title.

So, where did the current title come from?

In this novel, both of our loveless heroes are lost in their own different mazes of life and both make their living in and around the national forest of Rocky Mountain National Park, in Estes Park, Colorado.  And though the forest is beautiful and magical, it can also be dark and deadly if you’re unclear of how to navigate the twists and turns of its paths.  For Gabe and Luis, that is true of life.  Unlike with the national park, there is no guide to lead you to the safe stations in life or love.  You have to map it out yourself.

Please join Gabe and Luis as they begin Mapping their ways out of their Forests and towards each other.

(Dear lord, that was cheesy, huh?  But that really is where the new title came from.)

Please join me on November 9, at Love Bytes, for the next blog tour stop.  We’ve mapped our way through this tour to the final posting. (Dear lord, I literally can’t stop.)  I’ve saved the best for last, where I will introduce you to a four-legged friend who plays a very important role in Mapping the Forest.

Mapping the Forest Blurb

Happily ever after has no map, but sometimes fate sends a guiding light.

Gabe Rice, a seasonal ranger at the Rocky Mountain National Park, can’t seem to get his life on the right trail. He loves the rugged beauty of the land, and there is no place he would rather live than the mountain community of Estes Park. But after six years, Gabe is beginning to wonder if he’ll ever get a full-time position or find love. When Gabe sees Luis—and hears his gorgeous singing—he’s compelled to meet him.

Luis Martinez, the new owner of a hotel and steak ride business in Estes, left California and a career as a therapist for a fresh start in Colorado. But even the beauty of the mountains can’t help him forget the past or move forward. Unprepared for his strong attraction to Gabe, Luis is ready to run and hide from emotions he never thought he’d have again.

Suddenly the path ahead opens to a future that looks brighter for both of them, if they can find the courage to walk forward—together.

A Stella Release Day Review: Mapping the Forest by Brandon Witt

RATING 5 out of 5 stars

Suddenly the path ahead opens to a future that looks brighter for both of them, if they can find the courage to walk forward—together.

Gabe is a thirty-two years old park ranger, he has a seasonal position at a National Park, a work he loves a lot even if his boss is a huge PITA. He has a great group of friends that are his only true family, starting with Jordan, his best friend, and her grandmother, a truly force of nature. Nonethless he is pretty lonely and even the love for his work is not enough anymore. Until one night he is spellbound by Steak Man, or Luis, while  he is singing and playing the guitar in the middle of the forest during a steak ride. From that moment things will change in Gabe life.

Luis has lately upset his all life as a therapist in California to run an hotel and jeep ride combo sight. Actually it was life that messed up with Luis and took Chris, Luis husband,  from him. The hurt for the loss of his partner is still too big and Luis is not ready to take a step forward versus a hypothetical new relationship.  But second chances are one of the greatest things in life.

I’m a huge Brandon Witt fan. I believe he is an amazing writer and I deeply enjoyed every story he has written. Mapping the Forest was no exception. Beautifully written and perfectly balanced in the emotions. Definitely a light read with some sadness to overcome and new beginnings to live.

What I particularly loved were the characters, each of them, not just Gabe and Luis, were well depicted, the Gay Boy Christmas Dinner  group of friends were all well defined and I so want to read each of their own stories. I already met Paxton in Christmas Miracles of a Recently Fallen Spruce. And then there’s Rob who lost his lover many years ago, Todd, Gabe secret crush until he meets the man of his dreams. I loved Mapping the Forest, I liked how the relationship between the MCs evolves, how they take their time getting to know each other and how later they rush into the chemistry, too strong to be ignored or waited on.

I wish to highly recommend this new release by Brandon Witt, great characters, good plot, excellent writing. I was conquered.

I like the different style of the cover art by Anne Cain a lot.

A Jeri Review: Son of Money By Brandon Witt

Rating: 3 Stars out of 5

Son of MoneyAt times I really liked this book. But at other times I really didn’t. So this is a mixed review for me, because I will try to highlight both as I am a fan of Mr. Witt’s books but this one was a disappointment.

Randall disinherited himself from the family fortune so that they couldn’t/wouldn’t run his life any longer. Guess what? He works to pay the bills and they still control his life.

Noah was just as bipolar as Randall. Except he spent his life as the son of missionaries and part of his adult life as one. Until his father died and he left it all behind. He hints that he no longer believes, but it is never explored at all.

There is a lot that is never explored.

Randall and Noah knew each other as teens and had a quick dalliance with each other before Noah was gone again on a missionary trip with his family. Fate brings them back together and while Noah pretty much had been waiting for that to happen, Randall is thrown for a loop. Randall’s feelings toward it rang more true. Noah was just completely accepting of the fact that all of a sudden there is Randall again. So of course they should get back together and live happily ever after. Really? People grow and change a lot in 20 years.

While I really enjoyed the relationship that Randall had with his niece, that is the strong hold his family had on him. Tow the line or you don’t see her anymore. I just felt it was ridiculous. Are parents really that controlling when you are an adult? Maybe, but to me that just shows how weak you are. I am speaking of not only Randall, but his brother and his sister in law who happens to be his best friend.

Anyway, back to the “romance”. I didn’t feel that there was any. It was kind of just accepted that they would be back together, the end. I wanted Noah to woo Randall. To be romantic. To show why they should be together, not just accept it as fact. I did like how Noah stood up to Randall’s parents, though. See why I am so wishy washy with this review? Loved this, hated that.

Previous books by Brandon Witt really hit me and left me thinking what a great book I just read.  I almost couldn’t wait to write the reviews because I wanted everyone to read the books. This one….meh.

Cover art by Anne Cain is perfect for the story.

A Stella Review: Shifting Silver by Brandon Witt

RATING  4,5 out of 5 stars

shifting-silverThe year is 1618, and Allakau is different from the other members of the Alaskan Yupik tribe. His people survive by hunting, but Allakau is unable to kill or eat flesh. As another season reaches its end and winter approaches, Allakau encounters a narwhal with silver eyes similar to his own. He saves the creature’s life but incurs his father’s wrath, and Allakau is given one last chance to prove himself a productive part of the tribe or be left behind to die. As he spends time alone in the woods, clues about his past and destiny begin to fall into place with the aid of another silver-eyed creature. His hunt might finally lead him to the truth about what sets him apart and where he belongs—if he can survive it.

A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2016 Daily Dose package “A Walk on the Wild Side.”

Allakau is different, he can’t hunt and he can’t eat the preys his father and brother kill to feed their family. Now he has three days until his family leaves the fishing camp for the village where the Yupik tribe is in the winter season. Three days to spend in the woods, kill an animal and finally become a man, otherwise he will be no more accepted by his father. What Allakau will find is his true nature and his eternal mate.

With just two books read, Brandon Witt has become one of my favorite authors, Under a Sky of Ash and Then the Stars Fall were simply beautiful. This novellas in the “A Walk on the Wild Side” anthology was another surprise.

Shifting Silver is a short gem, it’s powerful and mystical. The author did an amazing job with his talanted writing, the scenes were all evocative, the descriptions clear and the world building great. I felt myself into the book as rarely happens. All the characters were well defined, Lucien and Fidelis were almost ethereal, and Allakau’s mum was awesome, ready to leave her whole family to be beside her special son. I have no idea if the author is a natural or behind his writing there’s a deep research, but in this little story each word had its own meaning and was beautifully delivered, I was in awe through till the epilogue.

Shifting Silver is another recommended read by Brandon Witt. It conquered me. Give it a try.

The cover art by Catt Ford fits the story just right. I like it.

A Stella Review: Under a Sky of Ash by Brandon Witt

RATING  5 out of 5 stars

Under A Sky Of AshMore than a decade after leaving Colorado to attend college and escape his past, Isaiah Greene moves back and builds a life in Denver as a special education teacher. When he meets Ben Woods, the mentor of one of his students, the attraction is immediate. The revelations that they’ve both suffered traumatic childhoods form a bond between them.

Raised by an abusive grandmother, Ben is a recovering addict who has made a family with his construction worker boss, Hershel, and Hershel’s husband, Daniel—drag queen ManDonna. Adding Isaiah to his life gives Ben a glimpse of a future he’d never dreamed possible for himself.

Both Isaiah and Ben are survivors, but when guilt drives a wedge between them, the past threatens to end their relationship.

Ben and Isaiah embark on journeys of self-discovery. Though their path will be difficult at times, humor and love find a way to bring light to the darkness.

Under a Sky of Ash was my first book by Brandon Witt, although I already knew him and heard good things about him, I hadn’t had the pleasure of reading one of his stories. Yes, this novel was a huge pleasure to read. Since the first chapters, I understood the talent of the author’s style.

The story touched my heart deeply, of course the prologue broke my heart, I met Isaiah, only twelve years old, having his first kiss with the sweet RJ, both so young and enthusiastic of the life, until RJ’s dad almost killed them. And then my heart broke again each time Isaiah and RJ met later in the years. Each time Isaiah couldn’t forgive himself and forget that night. Each time I saw Aaron and that time when he finally found a family. The book was a continuos of “times” to me, some made my soul cry, others lift it.

This is not an easy read, it is pretty heavy, a punch in the gut, the characters very complex, but Under a Sky of Ash was so worth all of my tears, it packs so many feelings hard to ignore. And all of them delivered. Probably this was what I most appreciated, the author’s ability to deliver everything he wrote, making me part of the characters’ lives and their emotions. He delivered their strength and courage and I felt the comfort when  they finally found a little happiness.

If you’re looking for a light story to escape your reality, look away, but if you’re a fan of angst, this novel is a winner, you can’t miss it. I’ve discovered a new author and I’m soon going to read more of his works.

The cover art by Anne Cain is good but I would have preferred something different, it didn’t convince me.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Brandon Witt here today to share some insight about his writing, his characters and his latest release, Under a Sky of Ash.  Welcome, Brandon.  Just a few questions….

Where do you normally draw your inspiration for a book from?  A memory, a myth, a place or journey, or something far more personal?

Typically from either my own life or the people in my life.  After 16 years of teaching/counseling, the inspirations are limitless. It’s amazing that one moment of my own life or someone else’s can trigger and open up an entire world for a novel. In Under a Sky of Ash, the teaching and my students’ lives were the biggest inspiration.

Are you a planner or a pantzer when writing a story? And why?

I’m a big planner.  We’re talking notebooks, outlines, character sheets, pictures, family trees, on and on and on.  The reason is twofold, for me.  One, it’s just how my brain works.  I need to be able to see the entire picture to have an idea where I’m going.  I’m very one-track minded, with everything.  I’m not a good multi-tasker. So, planning helps.  Although, my plans typically change as I write the story, but at least it helps to know where I’m going.  Two, I feel like it really helps me know my characters inside and out before I start the story.  Granted, they change and grow over the course of the book, but I have no idea how I’d ever start writing a story about characters I didn’t know.  I’ve heard other authors talk about how they never plan and how they get to know their characters as they write.  I would be completely lost.  But I admire them for being able to do so!

Contemporary, supernatural, fantasy, or science fiction narratives or something else?  Does any genre draw you more than another when writing it or reading it and why does it do so?

I know this is the wrong answer, but fantasy is my biggest thing (or at least urban paranormal).  However, I’ve always tended to write real life, even though I read more fantasy.  Maybe it’s just using writing as therapy?  Not sure.  Though I do have a fantasy series out and a couple shorts coming in the next couple of months.  As far as romance?  For about six years in Jr. High and high school, I read every Christian Romance novel I could get my hands on.  Yes, you read that right!  (For any of you who had the same sickness, my favorites were anything by Bodie Thoene and The Winslow Series.)

If you had a character you’ve written you would write differently now at this time in your writing career, who would it be and why?

Oh! That’s a dangerous question. I almost don’t want to answer that one!  However, that answer is easy.  Brooke Morrison, from The Shattered Door.  It was my first novel and over ten years ago now.  He really documents where I was in that moment in my journey out of learn-to-be-straight therapy and my Christian beliefs.  I read that book now and I’m in such a different place than where he is (where I was), it’s honestly hard for me to get through it.  However, that is one of the wonderful things about writing.  It captures the author where they are at that moment.  I’m sure I’ll feel the same about some of the characters now when I look back in ten more years. Ultimately, I wouldn’t change him.  There are many people that LOVE Brooke.  I think I see so much of myself in him that it’s hard to show him the same amount of grace as I do my other characters.

Can an author have favorites among their characters and do you have them?

Dear lord yes!  And I’m not sure what this says about me, but, for me, it’s almost always my supporting characters and/or my women.

In The Shattered Door, it’s Maudra.  I’ve even named my Mini Cooper after her.  She’s perfect and I want her in my real life.

In the Men of Myth Series, it’s Sonia. She is so gorgeous and strong and damaged and vicious.  I’m totally captivated by her.

In Under a Sky of Ash, it’s ManDonna. The drag queen.  Writing her was the most fun I’ve ever had writing a character.  I swear she was in the room with me in every scene she was in.  I couldn’t believe the things she said as my fingers typed the words.

If you were to be stranded on a small demi-planet, island, or god forbid LaGuardia in a snow storm, what books would you take to read or authors on your comfort list?

Easy.  Cliché though it may be.  Harry Potter, by JK Rowling.  Those books are and always will be my all-time favorite.

Woke Up in a Strange Place, by Eric Arvin

The Black Dagger Brotherhood series, by JR Ward

Beneath the Stain, by Amy Lane

From the Corner of His Eye, by Dean Koontz

Lonely Heart series, by Heidi Cullinan

Dogwood Days, by Poppy Dennison

How early in your life did you begin writing?

Sophomore year in high school.  All thanks to Ms. Becca Hungerford.  She was the teacher that started it all.  School and reading  (and even more so, math and science) were never easy for me.  I had to work hours and hours each night, often over tears, and then still go in for tutoring.  Ms. Hungerford taught us creative writing.  It was the first time I didn’t agonize over homework.  And she was always so complimentary and kind.  She fostered growth through gentleness and encouragement.  I owe her everything!

Were you an early reader or were you read to and what childhood books had an impact on you as a child that you remember to this day and why?

As I stated above, reading was hard.  I wasn’t able to really read until fifth grade.  Before then, I only read Garfield and Archies. Then mom forced, FORCED, me to read Mr. Popper’s Penguins and The Secret Garden the summer between 4th and 5th grade.  It clicked and I devoured every book I could find.  I loved Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, Secrets of a Unicorn Queen, anything by Gene Stratton-Porter and Laura Ingalls Wilder, on and on and on.

What question would you ask yourself here?

Is living the life of a full-time writer as wonderful as you dreamed?

Yes!  A billion times yes!  The ONLY draw back is the constant terror of if I will be actually able to support myself with writing and not have it all slip through my fingers.  Other than that, it really is better than I dreamed.  To write every single day?  Unreal.  To life a life that I’ve dreamed of for nearly two decades?  I’m so very, very blessed and I pray that it will last. To hear from and talk to readers who connect with my books and find out they were touched by them or simply entertained?  Absolutely floors me.  I am completely filled with gratitude and hope.

If you were writing your life as a romance novel, what would the title be?

Custom-Fit Love

Tag-line:  Romance readers beware, this romance has almost everything you hate in your romance novels, however, the two main characters couldn’t be happier.

Thank you, Brandon, this was wonderful.  Please come back and visit us again.

A Jeri Review: The Imperfection of Swans by Brandan Witt

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5  (4 1/2 stars!!)

The Imperfection of SwansKevin Bivanti’s dream is to open a wedding dress shop, a place with the stunning gowns to make every bride-to-be feel adored. At thirty-eight, he quits a successful advertising career to buy an old brownstone in a trendy Boston neighborhood and to make his dream a reality. When one of his cosigners drops out, fate intervenes, ushering in Casper James, who hopes to open his own bakery. With Casper willing to take the risk, their ambitions meld into a wedding dress and wedding cake boutique.

Extensive renovations to the brownstone, an affair with his ex-husband, family drama with his mothers, and the anxiety of significant life changes push Kevin to the brink of a nervous breakdown. In the midst of stress and uncertainty, Casper becomes more than a business partner, a mutual attraction that adds another layer of intensity and risk.

With their dreams on the verge of reality, Kevin and Casper must find the courage to face the stress of managing their attraction, the gamble of a new business venture, and the resurgence of Kevin’s personal demons.

I really loved this book! The general concept of the story was not all that original. Two guys working together and don’t want to mess up their professional relationship, but fighting it gets harder and harder. We’ve read that before right?

Yep, we have. But what we haven’t read about is one of the characters who is at once so lovable and so flawed and the other, just as lovable and trying hard not to be flawed. It is the flaws and the way they are dealt with which made this book a BIG 4 1/2 star read for me.

Kevin is the character with the most issues. And like most people with issues like his, he denies them and makes excuses for them. His strength and vulnerability make you want to hug him and tell him it is going to get better. Kevin is finally taking a huge leap to live his dream- that of opening a bridal shop in Boston. With the help of his moms and extended family, it looks like it will become a reality. Until financing falls through.

Enter Casper, a head pastry chef who has his own dream of opening a bakery. He lives with 4 loud music majors so that he can save up enough money to open his own bakery. Kismet brings them together and with Casper able to help secure the financing on the multi million dollar building- it seems as though they will both be living their dreams.

This book contains some pretty serious subject matter- eating disorders and anxiety. Both could have easily been portrayed as overly dramatic or sensationalistic, but they are not. They are addressed head on, shown for the true colors that they are. How they affect not only the person living with them, but the people who love them as well.

There is also an outstanding cast of background characters in this book. Two of my favorites were Renata and Noelle- Kevin’s moms. Their yin yang relationship so mirrors the relationship that Kevin and Casper are trying to build together.

I laughed and I cried. I couldn’t wait to turn the page and I didn’t want it to end.

There I learned that the cover art- oh so gorgeous- is not only the author’s real life best friend, but also the inspiration behind Kevin. It made me love the book more.

A MelanieM Advent Story Review: Christmas Miracles of a Recently Fallen Spruce by Brandon Witt

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Sleigh Ride Advent StoryPaxton Peterson’s favorite day of the year is his annual Gay Boy Christmas dinner. He’s checked and double-checked his to-do list, because nothing stresses him out like the unexpected. Confident everything will run smoothly, Paxton embarks on his yearly snowshoed hike through the Rocky Mountains near his home. His perfectly planned evening is cut short by Logan Charles’s careless enjoyment of his brother’s snowmobile, and Paxton is stranded in the woods. It’s the worst thing that could’ve possibly happened to him—or maybe the best.

Christmas Miracles of a Recently Fallen Spruce by Brandon Witt was that unexpected present you find under the tree, the one you have no idea what’s inside from the shape or in this case the title.  What Brandon Witt delivers is a delightful tale of a annual hike gone wrong when he gets hit by a snowmobile.  The characterizations are realistic, the  scenes beautifully rendered, glowing yet natural, and the men funny and real.

I so wanted to spend more time with them and to see what happened as the door shut behind them.  No instant love, nothing more remarkable than a new connection that sparkles and might turn into something wonderful for the future.  I loved this story and hope that the author will take this couple and revisit them in the future.

Love Christmas stories but without a lot of sweetness or holiday overtones?  This is the one for you.
