An Alisa Review: For the Love of a Unicorn (Legendary Shifters #1) by Catherine Lievens

Standard

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Legendary shifters are hunted and used, but some people are ready to do anything to keep them safe.

Sam has been living in the forest since his parents were killed and his brother taken because of what they were—unicorn shifters. He hasn’t approached the wolf pack living nearby because he doesn’t know if he can trust them, but when he meets a wolf at the stream and realizes they’re mates, he knows he will have to get over that distrust.

Frederic didn’t expect to meet his mate in the forest where the pack lives, and he certainly didn’t expect his mate to be a unicorn shifter. Sam is, though, and he comes with complications and problems—and Frederic is willing to take them all on.

Sam is wary and doesn’t know how to trust, but he hopes having the pack’s help means he can finally look for his brother. He doesn’t know where to start, though, so using himself as bait for the men who killed his parents sounds like a good idea.

Until it doesn’t.

I really enjoyed this story.  Sam has been living alone and in fear since losing his family when by chance he runs into his mate he runs before he even realizes the significance of that meeting.  Frederic is so happy and is willing to do anything to help Sam and make him feel safe.

Sam was a little reluctant but it doesn’t take too long for him to want to complete his mating, the joys of a mate bond.  I understood how both of these two were feeling and how they were able to work though their feelings and fears.  I loved how supportive the other pack members and alpha were to both of these guys and how they all wanted to give Sam the stability and support he needed.  Rescuing Sam’s brother was a great ending and in typical fashion of this author, he meets his mate, time to wait for the next book.

The cover art by Angela Waters is nice and I liked the visuals of both of their animal halves.

A Chaos Moondrawn Review: Concatenation (Lost in Translation #1) by Catherine Lievens

Standard

Rating: 3.25 stars out of 5

Dorran finds a dead body in his new apartment building. Turns out the lead detective on the case is his ex-boyfriend Eli whom he hasn’t seen since high school, more than ten years ago. The dead guy turns out to be John, the person Dorran bought the apartment from. John’s uncle Francis had owned the apartment before he died–not too long ago either. As Dorran is cleaning out Francis’ belongings so he can move in, he starts to feel a kinship with Francis. Suddenly things are out of place and he feels like he’s being touched, but no one is there. Then, there are his neighbors, all gossips and in everyone’s business. While they may not tell the police investigating John’s death everything, they seem to want to tell Dorran. As Dorran gets dragged into the case through no fault of his own while trying to do the right thing, his own curiosity gets engaged. Eli warns him to stay out of it as it’s police business. They also have their own personal issues that need to be resolved if Eli is going to keep coming around.

This story has a lot going for it, but it didn’t quite come together for me. I felt removed from the characters and not emotionally invested in their second chance romance. There is some contradictory information as Dorran thinks about Eli and their history. The reader is told Dorran loved Eli, but his thoughts about the Eli he knew aren’t very flattering. The reader is also told Eli runs from confrontation and his problems. Yet Dorran is the one who left Eli because he wouldn’t come out. Eli keeps saying he forgives Dorran, but Eli is still bitter about this even though he admitted it was his own fault. Dorran is still beating himself up over his decision. I think this conflict as a plot point could have been better written. There is also some repetition.

The neighbors are all somewhat interesting. There could have been more done to make them be creepy, invasive, and meddling in a way the audience could treat them all with suspicion. They are all supposed to be suspects. There was a murder in the building, possibly two, and yet this is not atmospheric at all. The reader is told Dorran is upset at finding the body, having nightmares, and feels uncomfortable as the neighbors all want to talk about it. The guy is having stuff move around in his apartment! Yet, I didn’t feel that fear at all. In fact, he decides having a ghost is just fine and no big deal. I did guess who was responsible for John’s death, but the details of why are revealed only at the end. This story didn’t grab my attention or emotions as much as I had hoped it would.

The cover art is by Angela Waters. I’m not sure this conveys anything about the story. It has a noirish quality in the background and this is a who-done-it. This is not how I pictured these guys.

Belgium expat Benoit Girault has only worked in the administrative department of Toys for All in Milwaukee for a few short months, but it’s long enough for him to miss everyone back home and to fall for coworker Jake Manning—not that Jake ever notices him. Or so Benoit thinks.

Jake notices Benoit all right, but he doesn’t want to risk mixing business with pleasure, not when it could create problems in the office. So when Jake’s friend and boss, Randall, tells him to team up with Benoit to organize a Saint Nicholas party, he’s less than thrilled. But as they work together and Jake nurses Benoit through an illness, he realizes some people might be worth risking it all for.

Excerpt

YOU WANT me to do what?”

Jake’s boss smiled at him as if he were asking nothing much—the bastard. Randall knew exactly what he was doing, just like he knew Jake would react like he did. He hated parties, and everyone in the office knew it.

“Organize a party for the new clients.”

“Janet usually organizes the parties.”

“She’s busy with another contract. The Belgian clients are yours, Jake. It seems obvious to me that you should be the one in charge of this.”

“But I don’t know anything about the saint you’re talking about.”

“You have enough time to learn something about him and about the Belgian traditions that go with it.”

“You can’t do this to me, Randall. Please. I’m already busy with this new contract. I don’t have time to organize a party.”

“The clients were delighted when I told them there would be a party.”

Jake gaped at his boss. “You told them?”

“Of course. When Mr. Leblanc said he was bringing his wife and son along, I just knew we had to do something for the kid.”

“Someone could take him to the zoo,” Jake muttered.

“Jake, we’re a toy company. Why would we take a kid to the zoo?”

“It’s not like we actually have the toys in this office. That’s what the stores are for.”

Randall set his jaw and narrowed his eyes. He obviously wasn’t going to be swayed by Jake’s protests. But what about pleading? “Randall, I just don’t have the time to do everything on my own, especially if you want a kiddie party.”

“That’s why Benoit is going to help you.”

Meet the Author:

Catherine Lievens has always loved books. She’s not sure how she managed to marry a man who doesn’t read, but she deals with it and buys enough books for both of them. Just ask him—he frequently wonders if the books on her shelves mate with each other to produce new ones. She never told him it’s only her buying more books.

After brushing up her English to graduate in English language and translation, she decided to put it to good use and write the characters she always dreamt of. She likes writing about creatures people say don’t exist, like shifters and harpies, because her life’s too boring to write about what she knows, and she always wanted to be a cat anyway.

A Paul B Review: Craig (Gillham Pack #3) by Catherine Lievens

Standard

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars  ★★★★

Craig coverCraig used to work for Glass Research Company as a security guard.  However, was also working for the local lion pride to rescue shifters being held by Glass.  Can he make a new life after his final rescue attempt while staying with the local wolf pack?

After his last rescue effort that brought Gillham pack alpha mate Zach home, Craig has decided to stick around the wolf pack in order to disappear from his former employers.  He has developed a special friendship with Jago, the elephant shrew shifter that was among the last of his rescues.  During a pack gathering in which the nearby lion pride is also invited, both men notice a man walking from the woods.  Craig could see himself in bed with the man if it weren’t for the cheesy moustache the man has.

Thomas is a member of the inner circle of the Gillham pack.  His pack alpha Kameron has noticed that Thomas has not been behaving normally the last few months.  To get his mind off his troubles, Kameron assigns Thomas to befriend the human Craig in order to convince the man to make the pack a permanent home.  It would not be so bad except that he gets jealous whenever Jago is hanging around Craig.  After meeting the man, Thomas realizes that Craig is his fated mate.  There are only two complications.  Craig seems to already have a boyfriend in Jago and Thomas has a wife and family.  Thomas must decide whether he wants to fight for his mate and possibly break several hearts in the process or walk away and have his broken instead.  When Thomas sees what appears to be kiss between Craig and Jago in the pack house, Thomas takes an action that answers his question.  But what will be the ramifications of it?

This is the third book in Catherine Lievens’ Gillham Pack series.  She does a nice job in bringing a minor character in the previous book and gives him the main story in the next.  Thomas must deal with his marriage that has been falling apart for a while before Craig ever shows on the scene.  He must also deal with his brother who does not understand how after years of marriage Thomas decides to mate with a man.  The scenes with Thomas’s son Eli talking to both his father and Craig are heart warming.   I am looking forward to seeing where the author takes the story.

The cover art by Latrisha Waters shows the shirtless torso of a well build man who is wearing blue jeans along with a wolf howling.  It fits the motif of other books in the series.

A Paul B Review: Zach (Gillham Pack, #2) by Catherine Lievens

Standard

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Zach coverZach desperately wants to be with his mate Kameron.  However, his sister’s husband is forcing him to stay away or else Ella will be hurt.  Will Zach be able to help not only his sister but also himself?

Kameron has been Alpha of the Gillham pack for six months.  He has felt a pull towards fellow pack member Zach for well over a year.  The only problem is that Zach does not smell like his mate.  Disappointed that the tell tale sign is not there, Kameron still spends all the time he can with Zach.  When he decides three months into his Alpha tenure that he wants Zack as his mate despite not being fated mates, Zach disappears on him.  Hurt by his disappearance, Kameron tries to move on by leading his pack.

Having known Kameron was his mate for seven years has been hard on Zach.  He first realized that Kam was his mate when he was fourteen, too young to do anything about it.  However, in order to protect Zach from their previous Alpha Erskine, his parents obtain some pills that mask Zach scent to Kam.  After Kam has defeated Erskine in an alpha challenge, Zach’s hopes of getting together with Kam are dashed when his brother in law Stan threatens both his sister Ella and Kam if he doesn’t come live with them to take over the household chores from a pregnant Ella.

However, that does not prevent Zach from sneaking over to the alpha house to catch glimpses of his should be mate.

After Kam and his friends rescue both Zach and Ella from Stan’s house, Zach explains the whole situation to Kam.  Kam insists that the injured Zach recovers in the alpha suite.  As the two renew their friendship and move toward a relationship, Zach decides his role is to be alpha mate.  However, one of the former inner circle members who had been abusing pack members slips apprehension.  Tom goes to the alpha house to look through the office files when Zach surprises him.  Tom subdues the injured man and takes off.  When Kam returns from interrogating the prisoners they do have finds Zach gone with no sign of a struggle, he isn’t sure what happened.  Was Zach kidnapped or did he run away again like the last time?

This is the follow up to Xavier in the Gilliam Pack series.  This is a good follow up to the story that was hinted at in the last book.  The reasons for Zach being so elusive in the first book are fully explained here.  The major theme of the book is misplaced distrust of one’s mate.  Zach does not trust Kam to help him out of his situation.  Kam does not trust Zach not to run away again, which caused a delay in his rescue.  The scene stealer in this book is the elephant screw shifter that was rescued from the labs.

The cover art by Latrisha Waters shows a well-built torso with a wolf looking out in front of him.  It’s a fairly standard cover for a shifter story.

A Paul B Review: Xavier (Gillham Pack #1) by Catherine Lievens

Standard

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Xavier coverXavier’s life has gone to hell. He has broken up with his boyfriend. A stalker after his ex has attacked him. Now people change into animals. It’s enough to make one pass out.

Xavier has ended his relationship with Andrew, who is dating someone new. However, a stalker who has taken an obsession with Andy does not know this and attacks Xavier. When friends of Andrew find a job for Xavier in the nearby town of GIllham, Xavier’s world is about to turn upside down. Xavier finds out that not only are Andrew’s friends shape shifters but also the men that he will be working for in Gillham.

Andy is a member of the Gillham pack of wolf shifters. When his alpha and best friend Kameron asks Andy to watch over a man sent by the local cat pride for his protection, Andy reluctantly agrees. When he meets Xavier, he recognizes the man as his mate. Making moves to confirm his suspicions, Andy scares Xavier worse than the stalker that is after his ex Andrew. Making matters worse for Andy is that Xavier wants to talk to his ex for some sort of explanation.

Once mates are explained to Xavier, he goes into a depression since he figures the only reason Andy would want an overweight accountant is because Fate had put them together. Andy assures him that despite the mat e pull that he could walk away if he wanted to do so.

Andy agrees to give Xavier time to settle into the world of the paranormal and mates.

As things begin to settle down for Andy and Xavier, outside forces start to put a strain on their building relationship. Some members of Andy’s family are not happy about him taking a human male as a mate. Also, news about some former pack members who were sold by the former alpha to scientists is brought to the pack’s attention. When Andy returns from the rescue mission, his and Xavier’s lives will be changed.

This is the first book in a new series by Catherine Lievens. The author has incorporated characters from her Whitedell pride series to help kick off this new series. While it would be helpful to have read the Whitedell series to understand some of the overall plotting between the two series, it is not essential. She has set up the scene for future books especially that of Kameron, the wolf pack alpha and Zach. I believe that Zach’s refusal to mate with Kam has something to do with the scientists or associates of the former alpha. I look forward to seeing how this series progresses, especially with Zach.

The cover art by Latrisha Waters shows a build man who I assume is Andy and his wolf. It is a good cover except that the man doesn’t quite match the description of Andy. It is noted that Andy is tattooed and pierced and those could be seen from his work clothes. The man on the cover has neither that I can see. It is a small quibble on my part.

STRW Author BookSynopsis

About Oliver…

What matters is not what you are, but who you are.

oliver72Oliver is human, or at least he was until the Glass Research Company kidnapped him and experimented on him. Now he has a bear sharing his mind, but he’s not able to shift, and he’s confused. Is he a shifter, or a human? What’s worse, he’s getting sicker every day, and no one seems to know how to help him. He can’t even bond with his mate because he doesn’t want Sebastian to hurt if something happens to him.

Sebastian wants his mate to be cured, and the only way to do that is to go to New York and kidnap one of the company’s scientist. With the help of his pride brothers, he manages to do just that, but having Oliver cured doesn’t mean all their problems are over.

Oliver will have to deal with learning how to shift and trying to convince Sebastian that he’s fine and that he can be claimed, but once he manages to do that, other problems arise. Will the two lovers finally have the time to just be together, or will the pressure push them apart?

STRW Spotlight Book Excerpt

Shit. Shit, shit, shit! Oliver didn’t know what had happened or how to solve this. Well, he knew what had happened. He had shifted for the very first time, but did he really have to do it while naked in bed with Sebastian? Even more so, did it really have to be like, seconds after they had just made love and claimed each other?

If Sebastian hadn’t been so quick to move away, Oliver would have shifted while…ugh, he didn’t even want to think about it!

“Uh, love? Careful with those claws, okay?”

Oliver realized that he had been digging into the mattress so he awkwardly tried to get his claws out of the fabric, but it seemed that every move he made, he managed to just rip it apart a little more. He was scared to move, but he could hear the bed creaking. It wasn’t exactly made to host a fully grown bear plus his mate, even if Sebastian was in human form.
