Book blurb:

Sasha Holiday is so over the holidays after getting left at the altar last Christmas Eve. But as the marketing maven for Lady Robin’s Intimate Implements, she’s stuck not-so-merrily pitching naughty toys at a romance book club’s Christmas party. Her loathing of the yuletide only intensifies as a snowstorm rolls in and traps her at the Winterberry Inn. Stranded with her is Perry Winters—a hot bearded book club member trimmed in flannel and tattoos.

Perry’s a romantic with an unerring belief in the magic of the season, and he recognizes a Christmas miracle when he sees it. Brave, smart, and confident—Sasha Holiday is a gift. And the gifts keep coming when she suggests they pass the time with some no-strings fun. After all, she has a big bag of toys that would make even Santa want to stay in bed on Christmas Eve.

But the frisky festivities turn complicated as feelings spark between Sasha and Perry. Perry wants to see Sasha once the snow clears, but Sasha is reluctant to take the relationship sleigh ride again. Perry will have to show her that love is more than just a holiday feeling.

Excerpt:

I don’t want to get hurt.

I don’t want to get hurt.

Those words rang through Sasha’s ears through dinner. She’d donned the stupid-ass reindeer antlers and a Christmas sweatshirt from Valerie in the hopes that a little cheer would do her some good. She’d fake it to make it and all that crap.

After the talk with Ryker earlier, she’d decided it was worth it to pull on false merriness like an ill-fitting Santa costume this evening. She only needed to make it through a few more hours of cozy Christmas social time, then she was home free come morning.

And yeah, the thought of leaving tomorrow left her breathless and hurting, a physical ache from her ribs to the pit of her stomach. She’d never see Andie and Karen, who were the biggest troublemakers ever. Never see Louise, who was sweet and shy, or Valerie, who could so easily become a friend.

And she’d never see Perry Winters.

She kept trying to convince herself that they could somehow continue this no-strings affair, that it didn’t mean anything and they were on the same page, so it was okay to keep seeing each other once the storm passed. But she couldn’t lie anymore.

I don’t want to get hurt.

She didn’t want to hurt him. Their goals, their hopes were too incompatible. He deserved a woman who would cuddle up to him while roasting chestnuts in the fire or who would help him trim the million Christmas trees in this adorable bed and breakfast.

He deserved a partner who would happily dance with him at the Winterberry Sappy Christmas Twosomes’ Extravaganza or whatever it was called. And that would never be her.

She was almost sure it could never be her.

Blog & Review Tour Exclusive Q&A:

List five fun facts about this book:

  • The heroine owns a 1984 VW Bug, which subsequently cannot make it up an icy hill and strands her at a cozy B&B with the hero.
  • Sasha is the head of marketing for a sex toy and lingerie company. I had to come up with unique names for the sex toys that her company sells. It was FUN!
  • The characters use a total of 9 sex toys together through the course of the story.
  • The hero is covered in floral tattoos and loves romance novels.
  • There is am ornery band of matchmakers (members of a romance novel book club) who try push the hero and heroine together.

What was the research process like for this book?

EM: There were three aspects of this book that I had to do quite a bit of research for. The first is the heroine’s VW Bug. I looked up specs and information on driving Bugs in bad weather. I got a few things wrong initially, but luckily, my editor has owned a VW Bug and was able to set me straight. I also had to research gardens and landscaping for this book. The hero wants to be a landscape architect. Lastly, I had to do a lot of sex toy research. Mainly, I needed to come up with unique names for the sex toys my heroine sells, which meant searching vendors to ensure the names weren’t super common.

Do you write listening to music? If so, what music inspired or accompanied this current book?

EM: I don’t often listen to music while writing unless I’m having trouble getting into a certain writing mood. If I need to write a sad scene but can’t get in the right headspace, I’ll listen to sad music. Stocking Stuffers is kind of an odd case. I wrote a lot of this book during the summer and fall last year. It was hard to feel Christmassy in the middle of June. This is also a sexy book. Basically, I went on the search for the sexiest Christmas music I could find and listened to that.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

EM: Normally, when I’m not writing, I’m reading or watching TV, which doesn’t make me sound very exciting. But I also love to hike and camp, and since moving to Alaska, I’ve learned to downhill ski, which is a lot of fun. Other hobbies include sewing, antiquing, and gardening.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Natural Disaster (Storm Chasers #1) by Erin McLellan

Standard

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

This story had so much energy! There’s a constant underlying tension in the KTTY newsroom as storm chasers tackle coverage of tornadoes across the Oklahoma countryside. The tension spreads to readers as we get to know the storm chaser characters, their hopes, dreams, and their fears.

It’s the fear that grabbed me in this story. Guthrie Gale, the well-known human interest reporter who’s the son of infamous storm chaser Slim Bridges wants no part of chasing tornadoes, but with budget cuts at the station, he’s strong-armed into taking on a rookie for the season. What no one knows however is that Guthrie had a close experience with a tornado when he was a child on a chase with his father that’s left him with high anxiety and the fear that he won’t survive the season.

Rookie chaser Luke Masters is a great guy. Young, sweet, good-looking, intelligent, interested, and with nerves of steel, Luke also shows compassion and a strong focus when they are in the field that helps calm Guthrie’s nerves, at least a little.

After one close storm, their attraction explodes into a close encounter of the sexual kind and the two realize they need to face the fact their attraction might lead to problems. So they make a pact to remain friends only, until the end of the season when they can explore whether they want to remain friends or start a relationship. For different reasons, both men are done playing the field and each would like a lasting relationship so they know there’s a chance for more after the season. But during the story, as the season progresses, so much happens to bring them closer and learn more about each other that it’s readily apparent they’d be good for each other.

The tornado season doesn’t pass quietly, though, and when they’re caught in the field with no backup and a twister heading their way, the real nail-biting begins.

I loved the slow burn, the banter, the camaraderie, and the way Guthrie’s anxiety is expressed, discussed, and shown throughout the book. Luke’s fear of abandonment is also addressed and explored. The story’s conclusion isn’t a quick resolution to everyone’s issues but does provide a satisfying hope for a happy future.

I definitely recommend this story to all lovers of MM romance, hashtags—friends to lovers, coworkers, dangerous professions, storm chasers, reporters, PTSD, anxiety disorder, and age gap. What a great book!

The cover by Brooke Albrecht features a man with a hand on a steering wheel against a dark background with a tornado in the lower panel. The scene eerily represents the tension of the storm chasers in the story. Very well done.

 Blurb

When two tornado chasers form a reluctant team, the pressure between them builds…

Human-interest reporter—and son of a famous storm chaser—Guthrie Gale wants nothing to do with severe weather. But his station’s director insists he join the storm chasing team, or else, and worse yet, she pairs him with hotshot rookie chaser Luke Masters.

All Luke wants is to be a part of the KTTY family, and he won’t let prickly Guthrie Gale spoil his chance. Little does he realize Guthrie’s anxiety around storms is more than justified.

As Oklahoma’s unpredictable tornado season picks up, Guthrie and Luke strike up a turbulent working relationship that shifts between lust and bickering. But when they are forced to outrun a dangerous twister, their trust is tested and the desire between them flashes quick as lightning, threatening to burn more than just their careers.

Excerpt

Guthrie Gale hated spring in Oklahoma almost as much as he hated meetings right after lunch.

Rain spattered against the windows of the KTTY news station, the sky a deep and ominous blue. Clouds darkened the city skyline, casting a murkiness over the land.

Guthrie had read the forecast and weather maps this morning. They weren’t expecting anything but rain, but he was still on edge.

He jumped as Debbie Debarr cleared her throat to bring the news team’s attention back where it belonged—on her, the boss.

“We’re expecting an active tornado season, as always, and we’re short-staffed. That means some changes are coming down the pipeline. With Mack out on maternity leave, we’d like someone to do double duty.” She paused dramatically before dropping her bombshell. “Guthrie, guess what, bub? You’re up.”

Guthrie fought a frown. He glanced around the room at the anchors, reporters, writers, weather team, and storm chasers. No one was surprised he’d been picked. Most of them knew his history. His dad’s history.

But he wasn’t part of the weather team. He was a field reporter, for heaven’s sake. Not a storm chaser.

“Me?”

“Yeah, you. You’ve got the experience we need out there. Plus your down-home country charm is evidently soothing to viewers.” Debbie said that in a way that made it obvious she did not find his slight twang soothing at all. “At least that’s what the focus groups say.”

Being stuck in a truck in the middle of a tornado was the last thing Guthrie wanted. Maybe that charm would come in handy now.

Throwing on his best fake smile, he said, “But I’m a pretty face for the camera. I’m not a storm chaser.”

He’d happily let Debbie believe his reticence stemmed from his own vanity at not being on-screen as opposed to the reality—tornadoes scared him shitless.

She rolled her eyes. “Your ego will live.”

Not if a tornado got him, it wouldn’t.

He’d figure out another way to fight this when he didn’t have an audience.

“Whose truck will I be in? Johanna’s?” Mack had been paired up with Johanna last year, spotting and filming while Johanna did the driving and reporting.

“No, I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Debbie said, tapping a bright red fingernail on the table.

Guthrie heaved a discreet sigh of relief. Johanna was KTTY’s veteran storm chaser and the most likely to be in the middle of the action, exactly where he never wanted to be again.

Debbie snapped her fingers. “I know. We’ll put you with the rook. You can give him a big ol’ Okie welcome, show him the ropes, help him settle in.”

Crap on a cracker.

The rook was Luke Masters—KTTY’s newest storm chaser. Guthrie had seen Luke around the station a few times since he’d been hired a month ago after an old-timer retired. Luke was from California of all places. Who’d ever heard of a Californian storm chaser? Guthrie disliked Luke on principle. He was a thrill-seeking newbie, for one. Worse, he was hot.

Luke had the type of face the KTTY brass would have loved to force in front of a camera, but the guy evidently wanted to chase giants, not smile and read from a teleprompter. Plus they’d probably make him cut off his man bun, which would be a right shame.

Guthrie had to force himself not to glance at the beautiful man in question. “Shouldn’t Luke shadow one of the veteran teams for a while?” Guthrie asked. “He’s pretty green.”

Luke sat up abruptly from a sprawl and drew Guthrie’s eyes like greedy little magnets. The muscles of Luke’s arms bunched as he shifted, and his smile was ornery as a rattlesnake’s.

“I spent three years with a team monitoring and chasing coastal tornadoes and hurricanes. And I even have my learner’s permit.” He winked at Guthrie, which incited a rumble of chuckles around the room.

That wink kicked Guthrie’s heart rate up a notch. Made him angry and turned on in equal measures.

“Those coastal twisters ain’t got nothin’ on the ones here. It’s different.”

Debbie grinned and her gravity-defying blond hair ruffled in the draft from the air conditioner. “And that, Guthrie dear, is why I’m pairing you together. It is different here. Who better to teach Luke that difference than someone who knows firsthand what an Oklahoma tornado can do? You have more experience than anyone in the room. Now, let’s talk editorial strategy….”

Guthrie tuned Debbie out as he got his thoughts in order. Luke was staring at him, an eyebrow raised, so Guthrie stared back. Such pretty brown eyes on such an infuriatingly arrogant man. Normally, Guthrie liked men with a bit of arrogance.

Not today.

The only thing worse than being in the field during a tornadic weather system would be babysitting an irresponsible, hotshot Californian while in the field during a tornadic weather system.

A Jeri Review: Clean Break (Farm College #2) by Erin McLellan

Standard

Rating: 4 Stars out of 5

I really enjoyed this book.
Travis and Connor had a sort of hook up a year ago that ended quickly because of a misunderstanding. Neither man could really forget the other. And then they were put together as class partners in Entomology 101. The attraction on both sides is definitely still there.
I really loved both guys. Travis and his openness about being gay and what he wants out of life and Connor, shy, quiet, bisexual with OCD and anxiety. They just fit so well together and they really shouldn’t have. Travis wants to be a lawyer and help people seeking asylum. Connor is set to take over his family’s farm and various business interests. Very different life goals.
A couple of points I want to share about why I really liked this book. Travis is black, he mentions being “black and gay from Texas”, but his race never comes up between Travis and Connor or even with any of their family or friends. It is a total non-issue.
The author taking the time to explain how OCD and anxiety can and usually are related, they ebb and flow, and that some things that people consider OCD is really just a personality trait. Like being tidy. I appreciate little things like that.
This ended up being a bit of a slow burn because of the boundaries Travis put on their relationship that wasn’t a relationship. But their after class activities were super hot and definitely a unique thing I’d not read in another book.
And then, ugh, the tears toward the end of the book. Legit crying while reading. But totally worth it for the ending.
Great follow up to the first in the series, that doesn’t need to be read but was really good as well. I do wish the cover model more closely resembled the Travis described in the book. But it certainly isn’t a big issue at all.
Cover art is gorgeous and makes you want to grab up and read the story.

Teaser Excerpt #1:

CONNOR

My day had been going exactly as planned. I’d walked to all of my classrooms yesterday, so I knew the most efficient route to each. I’d woken up with enough time to iron my shirt and still get to my first class early. And I’d remembered quarters, so I could get a snack before said class started.

I’d also made three different lists last night, so I felt prepared for the day.

One for class materials:

  • Planner
  • 3 College-ruled Notebooks
  • 4 Pens
  • Notecards
  • Whiteout
  • Yellow highlighter

A to-do list:

  • Schedule meeting with advisor
  • Buy Scantron forms
  • Deep clean kitchenette in apartment
  • Work shift at Feed Store

And, lastly, a list of goals for the week:

  • Complete class readings for next week
  • Finish deep clean of entire apartment
  • Be social – to a degree
  • Delete Tinder, again
  • Go to the gym twice

Travis Bradford was not on any of my lists.

Teaser Excerpt #2:

TRAVIS

I was frozen, arms and legs heavy with desire or shock. I wasn’t sure which. I wanted Connor to keep kissing me, and I wanted him to stop right fucking now.

He must have sensed my unease because he pulled back and stared at me. My vision had adjusted to the dim light, so I could make out the muddy hazel of his eyes and the way his jaw ticked. He had faint acne scars on his cheeks that I’d never noticed, giving his face a rugged quality that was almost offset by all his adorable freckles.

“I’m sorry. I should have asked you first,” he said.

“It’s fine,” I whispered. My voice was shot.

“Can I kiss you again?”

This was the weirdest day. First, I’d discovered I was going to get a pet cockroach, and now the guy who I’d lost an entire semester pining after was asking permission to kiss me in a closet. There was a metaphor in there somewhere, but I was not in the right mind to analyze it.

I was curious. And he was sexy as all fuck. Maybe because he was so repressed and stoic? I wanted to be the one to unravel him.

“I suppose,” I said.

This time he sucked on my bottom lip, and my knees immediately went weak. He didn’t kiss like other guys. He kissed like he wasn’t totally sure of himself, and maybe it made me a jerk, but I wasn’t helping him out at all. I stood stock-still, and let him explore.

He kissed slowly around my mouth, his lips slipping against mine, almost reverently, and my head spun.

This was not a breath-stealing kiss. His tongue wasn’t stuffed so far in my mouth I couldn’t think. In fact, he hadn’t used his tongue at all. He captured my top lip, suckled lightly, then nibbled on it.

I couldn’t help it. I groaned and pulled him closer so our bodies touched. He pressed me into the door with an intensity that scared and excited me all at once. The back of my head ground into one of those plastic glowing stars.

Shhh,” he mumbled, his mouth not leaving mine.

“Don’t shush me,” I snapped before gripping his face in both hands and biting his lip hard.

He grabbed my hands, ripped them off his cheeks, and pinned them above my head against the closet door.

We stared at each other, both breathing hard.

“I liked that,” he said. His voice was wary, as if he didn’t want to give too much away.

I wanted him to give everything away.

Teaser Excerpt #3:

TRAVIS

“I’ve never done this before,” he whispered, stroking his thumb down my crack through my briefs. “I don’t know what I’m doing.”

“What feels right?”

I wasn’t sure if that made any sense, but my brain was full of static. I wasn’t with it enough to have this conversation coherently, not if he kept touching my ass like that.

He hummed and kneeled beside me on the bed, caressing and squeezing my butt until my eyelids drooped shut from the attention. I was practically purring.

As my body went boneless, he brought his hand down hard onto my left ass cheek. I gasped, a piercing sound that was as loud as his palm hitting my flesh. Then I thrust against the bed as the heat from his slap spread through me.

“Oh. Wow.” His voice was so awed that I almost rolled over so I could see it mirrored on his face, but before I could move, he spanked me again.

I shuddered and let him at me. He played for a while, alternating between spanking me lightly and gripping my ass, testing it like he was examining a piece of fruit at the grocery store. It made me feel dirty, but in the best possible way.

My briefs held the warmth from each smack close to my skin, and within minutes, I was humping the bed. Spanking usually made me hot, made me have to fight orgasm if my dick was touching literally anything at the same time. I craved it. The sharpness of the sting as it spread on my skin, the sound, the lift and jiggle of my ass—it all coalesced into one perfect moment.

So close.

“Don’t come yet,” he warned.

“I won’t.” Damn. Talk about a promise I wasn’t sure I could keep.

His hand came down with more force, right on the crease of my ass and thigh, and I ripped his bedding off the corner of the mattress. The pain knocked something loose in me, and I fell into that shiny place I craved but rarely reached, where everything was amplified.

“Harder. Connor, oh fuck.” He wasn’t giving me a break now, and I started to babble, my breath hitching. “So good. So good . . . Connor. Oh fuck, I want you so bad . . . Hated seeing David with his hands on you . . . Hated when he almost made you smile . . . Harder.”

Life of Bliss (Love Life #2) by Erin McLellan

Release Date: April 30, 2018

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to host Erin McLellan here today to talk about the characters in her latest story, Life of Bliss.  Welcome, Erin.

~ Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Interview with Erin McLellan ~

Who inspired Victor’s character?

He was very likeable as the BFF who was a rock for Niles while Skyping with him from his job on a cruise ship throughout Life on Pause. I don’t usually go into detail on a secondary character in a review but I did for him when I reviewed Life on Pause.

Is he based on someone you’ve met?  And, by the way, thank you for giving him his own story in this sequel.

You’re welcome! I am so happy you loved Victor! He was one of those characters that just seemed to jump off the page when I started writing him. When I was drafting Life on Pause, I didn’t have clear plans to write him and/or Todd a sequel, but he ended up being so charismatic and fun that I didn’t want to let him go.

I wouldn’t say that Victor is based on any one person, but when I originally wrote him, I thought a lot about the friends in my life. It was really important to me that he be an awesome friend, and I’m lucky to have had a lot of good examples to pull from. Also, a handful of Victor’s one-liners are courtesy of my friend, Dillon. They both have very snarky, quirky senses of humor, and I’d often have conversations with Dillon that ended with me saying, “Can I steal that joke for my book?” And he always says yes because he’s wonderful. Life of Bliss is dedicated to him.

What was your favorite scene in Life of Bliss?

Oh! This is such a hard one. My favorite is the scene during Remy’s wedding reception. Todd and Victor get increasingly tipsy and their feelings for each other peek through. Of course, when their inhibitions start to lower, they get this crazy idea that they should elope! It was the first scene I envisioned—the origin, so to speak—when I thought of the story!

I also have a soft spot for the scene with the possum, and any scene that involves sticky notes.

Who or what inspired this enemies to lovers story?

In Life on Pause, where the characters first meet, their disdain for each other is pretty explosive, but their chemistry was somewhat of a happy accident, I guess. I hadn’t planned it. Though, I have to admit that my husband and I were not the best of friends when we first met, so perhaps I pulled sub-consciously from that experience a bit!

Other parts of the story had more real-life inspiration. My husband and I went to Eureka Springs, AR, one of the settings in the story, before we were married. We loved it and were really tickled by all the wedding-themed stuff. A lot of the Oklahoma City scenes are based on real places, like the gay bar and some of the restaurants. Lastly, the idea for this story came from one of my late-maternal grandmother’s diary entries. She wrote about how a lot of her friends didn’t have weddings during the Korean War, but instead eloped to Arkansas where there was no marriage-license waiting period. That tidbit has always stuck in my head, especially as some places in Arkansas, like Eureka Springs, have very wedding-themed economies.

What do you enjoy most about writing MM romances?

It’s important to me to write queer characters, and while I’ve now written three m/m romances, I plan to write m/f and f/f as well. In fact, I’m writing an m/f with a bisexual woman right now!

I’ve had fun writing m/m romances set in the Great Plains (like Oklahoma) because it’s not a setting I’ve seen very often in m/m romance, and when I have, it’s the place people are trying to escape from, or they’re all cowboys. Not to knock cowboys, because they’re great, but they certainly aren’t common anymore. I grew up in Oklahoma, so I know a ton of queer people who have built their lives there, who cope with the good and the bad of living in a conservative, flyover state every day. It’s important to me to show what that might look like.

Lastly, I enjoy writing soft, squish-worthy heroes, so why not write two in one story!

Life of Bliss Tagline:

Pretending to be boyfriends is easy. Being accidental husbands is not.

Blurb:

Nobody plans to accidentally marry their frenemy-with-benefits.

Todd McGower and Victor Consuelos do not like each other. They can’t have a conversation without insults flying, and Victor seems to get off on pushing Todd’s buttons. The fact that their antagonism always leads to explosive sex . . . well, that’s their little secret.

Victor has a secret of his own. His full-blown crush on Todd is ruining his sex life. He hasn’t looked at anyone else in months, and he’s too hung up on Todd to find a date to his cousin’s wedding.

In a moment of weakness after a heart-stopping night together, Todd agrees to be Victor’s fake boyfriend for the wedding. Victor will have his plus-one—which will get his family off his back—and Todd will get a free mini-vacation. It’s a win-win.

But pretending to be fake boyfriends leads to real intimacy, which leads to too much wine, and suddenly, Todd and Victor wake up with wedding bands and a marriage license between them. That was not their plan, but a summer of wedded bliss might just change their minds.

An Alisa Review: Life on Pause by Erin McLellan

Standard

Rating:  2.5 stars out of 5

Niles Longfellow is a nerd, and not the trendy type of nerd, either. He wears a historically accurate homesteader costume to work every day, has a total of one friend, and doesn’t know how to talk to guys. So when he gets a flat tire and the hottest hipster ever stops to help him, all Niles can think is that he’s wearing his stupid cowboy getup. Normally, Niles feels invisible to other men, but he’d take that invisibility any day over Rusty Adams seeing him in suede and fringe.

Rusty moved to Bison Hills to help his sister raise her daughter, and nothing is more important to him than that. He’s also fresh off a breakup, and isn’t prepared for anything complicated. But then he meets Niles. Rusty sees Niles as more than a clumsy, insecure guy in a costume. He sees a man who is funny, quirky, and unexpected.

Nothing about their connection is simple, though, especially the lies and insecurities between them. Niles doesn’t know if he can trust Rusty with his heart, and when Rusty’s sister decides to move away, Rusty doesn’t know if he can stay behind.

I really wanted to like this story but too many little things made it hard to enjoy at times.  Niles can’t even begin to understand that anyone could actually be attracted to him.  Rusty is still reeling from a recent break up and doesn’t really know how to go about wooing the insecure Niles.

I loved Niles and Rusty’s friendship that they striked up at the beginning, they become almost as in tune with each other as Niles is with his best friend Victor.  After they get together though Rusty would use Niles’s insecurities against him when they come up or interfere in their relationship.  At times he is the most caring person and the next he can say something very damaging.

I think Niles was adorable and he really needed the right person to support him in order for him to really grow.  He has been living “on pause” since his father’s stroke and doesn’t know how to move forward.  I could feel for Niles because I know what it’s like to feel out of place and not know how to act around others.  I loved when Rusty was sweet but then he could just cut Niles down and unfortunately it felt like they kept going in a circle.  Niles didn’t seem to really grow in confidence until they had resolved their issues near the end.

Cover art by LC Chase is eye catching and works well for this story.

Hello! I’m Erin, and welcome to the blog tour for my m/m college romance, Controlled Burn! I can’t wait for you to meet Joel and Paulie, and hope you enjoy their romance as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Meet the Cast of Controlled Burn

When I’m writing, I seldom have an actor or model in mind as I create characters. But as I was revising and editing Controlled Burn, I often came across actors, models, or musicians who reminded me of the characters. Below I’ve included some models and actors to help introduce you to the cast of Controlled Burn.

Joel: He’s the main character of Controlled Burn—the entire story is from his point of view. Joel has not had an easy life, and he’s actively dealing with some grief. Sometimes he says the wrong thing, and he is often selfish or self-centered. He’s certainly flawed. But at his core, he’s sensitive and strong-willed and loving. My current inspiration for Joel is the actor Joe Alwyn.

Paulie: He is Joel’s love interest. Paulie also hasn’t had an easy life, but he handles it quite differently than Joel. While Joel can be closed-off, Paulie is open, swishy, fun, flirty, and sweet. He makes friends everywhere he goes, and loves openly and honestly. Paulie was a delight for me to write, and the model Brandon Logie is my current inspiration for him.

Travis: Travis is Joel’s best friend and housemate. They share a crappy two bedroom, one bathroom rental house right off campus. Travis is sarcastic, honest, sometimes outrageous, and a little kinky. He plays lots of instruments, poorly, and has a wide range of bizarre interests. He is also emotionally intelligent, which sometimes causes problems for Joel, who hides his emotions. My inspiration for Travis is the lovely John Boyega.

Daria: Daria is Paulie’s younger sister. Like Paulie, she is estranged from their very large family. She’s a nursing student and has vast reserves of empathy. She also struggles with anxiety and depression. The bond between her and Paulie is very special. My inspiration for Daria is actress Maika Monroe.

Alex: Alex was a really fun character to write, and I hope I get to revisit his story eventually. He is a fun, sexy, tattooed guy with a super soft center. He’s really understanding during moments when some people wouldn’t be. My inspiration for him is model Diego Barrueco.

Angie: Angie is Paulie’s best friend. She’s an accounting major, like him, and is wild and fun. She has a sly sense of humor and an open heart. My current inspiration for Angie is Ariel Winter.

Aunt Ruth: Ruth is Paulie and Daria’s aunt. She takes first Paulie and then Daria in when they are teenagers and are no longer welcome at their parents’ home. She’s stubborn and mischievous, as well as being a loving mother figure to Paulie and Daria. My inspiration for Aunt Ruth is Diane Keaton. Also, I just really love this picture of her.

About Controlled Burn

At eighteen, Joel Smith’s life fell to pieces. His boyfriend died in a car crash while reading a sext from him, the local newspaper outed them both in the aftermath, and his parents got a divorce. Joel did everything possible to outrun his past: he moved to Oklahoma for college, legally changed his name, and started over.

Since then, he hasn’t let anyone get close—not his classmates, not his roommate, and definitely not his hookups. The strategy has served him well for over three years. Why would he change it now?

But Joel doesn’t plan on the articles about his boyfriend’s death being used as a case study in one of his classes. And he doesn’t plan on Paulie McPherson, who is sweet and giving and fun. In Paulie, he finds a home for the first time in years.

But love isn’t simple, and lies have a tendency to get in the way. Joel must figure out if he’ll allow his grief to rule him, or if his connection with Paulie is worth letting all of his walls come tumbling down.

A Jeri Pre-Release Review: Controlled Burn by Erin McLellan

Standard

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

I generally really like books set in colleges. So many different people, away from home, new friendships, etc. And while I did like this book, I definitely didn’t love it.

Joel is the typical closed off main character. He erected giant walls around himself after his boyfriend died while reading a text from him.

Paulie is the complete opposite of him. He is out and proud, even though it ended up getting him disowned by his super religious family.

I enjoyed the slow build of the relationship between Paulie and Joel. They had good chemistry, but if I was Paulie there was no way I would put up with Joel.

If anything this book was a perfect example of how you choose to live your life. Something tragic happened to Joel and he turned inward and let that tragedy define his life. Paulie also had something tragic happen- but he chose to see the good in the world.

There was some angst- again, Paulie has the patience of a saint- and a decent love story, but it kind of left me wanting a bit.
