Hi everyone! First let me give Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words a great big thank you for hosting my cover reveal. Thanks guys!

I’m super excited to be here today to show off the beautiful cover for my upcoming release. Lost Souls Found comes out on April 17th, and it’s the next book in my Requiem Inc. series. When I wrote the first one, Ghost of a Chance, I didn’t know if I’d get the opportunity to write Sam and Michael’s story. But their relationship was important to the characters, so I wrote in Sam’s crush and some hints as to how Michael feels about him. So I was thrilled when Dreamspinner gave me the green light for Lost Souls Found because I got to bring their journey to love to the page.

Their relationship isn’t the most easy one. They definitely both have some learning to do. But there’s no doubt they’ll get there in the end.

And to showcase this story, Aaron Anderson worked his magic again and brought a gorgeous cover to life. The cover model is how I picture Sam, and he’s got a mischievous streak. Just look at that smirk! Aaron also did a great job mirroring the look of the first book, while making this cover wholly it’s own. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the right one.

You don’t have to have read Ghost of a Chance to understand Lost Souls found; they are both standalone. I recommend they be read in order so you can get a little background first, though it’s not strictly necessary. Either way, I hope you get a chance to pick up this book when it comes out.

Blurb:

Dying is all in a day’s work. Love is more dangerous.

Ghostwalker Sam Jones has been half in love with Michael King since he started working at Requiem Inc. But Michael is his boss and a Guardian, to boot. Sam thinks they could make it work anyway, but Michael uses his position and his age to keep Sam at arm’s length.

When Sam continues to volunteer for the most dangerous cases, Michael has to intervene. He tells himself he’s just doing his job, but he’s always seen Sam as more than another operative, and he can’t bear the thought of not taking his chance. The connection between them has been strong from the beginning, and Michael’s telepathy adds unexpected depth and an edge to their new romance, but working together while they try to build their relationship might be the hardest part of their job if they don’t make some sacrifices.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to host Kris T. Bethke on tour for her story Ghost of a Chance (Requiem Inc. #1).  Welcome, Kris!

✒︎

Hi there! I’m Kris T. Bethke, and a great big thanks for spending a little time with me today. Thanks to the gang here at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for hosting me!

My newest release, Ghost of a Chance, is out now, and there’s a lot I love about this story. But the truth is, it almost didn’t happen. I’d started a version of this story several years ago and almost immediately shelved it, knowing it wasn’t working. But when I saw the submission call for this new line, I knew it was time to bring it out and dust it off again.

The original premise wasn’t mine to begin with. It was, in fact, and idea my brother had. He told me about this idea a dozen or so years ago and it stuck with me. The picture he painted with that scene he shared with me haunted me for a decade. I thought about it off and on throughout the intervening years. And then I asked him if I could have it, because I wanted to write a story around it.

So I started to, but as I said, it just wasn’t working. So I put it away and tried to forget about it. Except, just like the original idea, it wouldn’t leave me alone. When I decided to write trying writing it again, just about everything changed. Except the most important details. A man’s job requires him to die, he doesn’t want a new partner, and he helps lost souls cross over.

Blake Jones emerged from the ashes of that failed first draft, and Derek Scott stepped in to pick up the pieces. Once I had these two MCs, everything else fell into place. That’s not to say this story wasn’t a lot of work. It was, but the most enjoyable kind. I needed to figure out the world, how it worked, and how these guys were going to fall in love while doing their job.

Especially because the salient details weren’t something I’d ever seen before.

I loved writing this story, and I loved creating the world in which they lived. The first try wasn’t right, but I’m so glad I didn’t give up on my instincts that this was a story that needed telling. If I’ve done my job, you’ll enjoy reading it just as much.

I hope you get a chance to check it out.

Blurb:

Only love makes life worth living—over and over again.

Ghostwalker Blake Jones dies every day. It’s his job and how he helps trapped souls cross over. But to return to life, he needs an anchor. His new partner, Derek Scott, is a surprise. Not only is he male, but his appearance belies a caring and gentle heart underneath. Despite attraction and a strengthening relationship, they know they shouldn’t take things further.

But there’s a big difference between knowing and doing.

Their growing love presents a problem, though not the one they expect. Blake and Derek have to decide if they should take their relationship to the most permanent level—an unbreakable metaphysical bond. Doing so offers both risk and unimaginable reward. Can Blake let go of his fears and put his complete trust in Derek in order to have the happily ever after he’s always craved?

A Stella Review: Hero Worship by Kris T. Bethke

RATING 4 out of 5 stars

Paramedic Alex Sullivan has always thought Matthew Carter was attractive. But there are reasons why Alex knows he shouldn’t get involved with the younger man. Taking Matt in as a housemate seems like a recipe for disaster.

To Alex’s surprise, Matt not only proves to be the perfect roommate, he also makes no effort to hide his attraction to Alex. Matt knows what he wants. Can Alex be the hero Matt already thinks he is?

I was deeply surprised by this short story, it’s the first I read by the author and I’m definitely going to check out her other works.

Although I picked Hero Worship because I thought the blurb was interesting (I love these kind of stories, where the characters already know and are attracted from each other, but they wait for their right time or think their right time won’t come), what truly conquered me was the writing. In my opinion the author delivered an amazing story, the writing is very well done and engaging, it made the reading flow easily, it caught my attention and I read the story in one breath.

Sure the short can’t give enough space to develop and discover more about the characters’ pasts or know more about their HEA, still it deeply satisfied me and it warmed my heart how well Alex and Matt fit together.

If you’re looking for a quick reading, try Hero Worship by Kris T. Bethke, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

The cover designed by Written Ink Designs is simple and clean but I’m not crazy about it.

An Alisa Release Day Review: Ghost of a Chance (Requiem Inc. #1) by Kris T. Bethke

Rating:  5 stars out of 5

Only love makes life worth living—over and over again.

Ghostwalker Blake Jones dies every day. It’s his job and how he helps trapped souls cross over. But to return to life, he needs an anchor. His new partner, Derek Scott, is a surprise. Not only is he male, but his appearance belies a caring and gentle heart.

I absolutely loved this story.  Blake is used to people leaving him, his only constant has been his brother and boss and fright from the get go he wants to see if Derek has it in him to stay.  Derek is willing to take that bet from the start and exceed anyone’s expectations.

Blake’s biggest fear is someone he loves leaving him, his parents kicked him and his brother out after they learned about the ghostwalker gene and all his lovers leave once they realize he is a ghostwalker.  Derek has always wanted someone to take care of completely, he begins while they are sequestered but gets more of a chance to take care of Blake in every way as their relationship evolves.  If only they were more informed about the anchor bond.

Blake and Derek are wonderful.  Blake finding the support and strength he so desperately needs in Derek and seeing him finally able to put aside his fears was perfect.  Derek is so grounded and it’s in his nature to take care of others but he can tell from the beginning that it means more with Blake.  I could feel both of these characters emotions throughout the whole story; Blake’s fear when he had a problem in the spirit realm and Derek’s when Blake came back to life to quickly are the biggest and made my heart stop for a second.  This story is a great beginning to this new series and hope it continues.  I really hope to see Blake’s brother, Sam, find the happiness he is looking for too.

The cover art by Aaron Anderson is great and gives a wonderful visual of Blake.

A MelanieM Advent Release Day Review: A Timely Gift by Kris T. Bethke

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

Sometimes the right gift can be life-changing….

On the solstice, Rory’s grandfather gives him a pocket watch that he claims will have Rory’s life sorted and his problems solved by Christmas. Rory starts out skeptical, but when he reconnects with an ex he never thought he’d see again, he has to admit there might be some holiday magic working after all.

Deacon’s life is in shambles, and he’s returned to Syracuse for a fresh start. Running into Rory again feels like much more than a coincidence, and neither of them can deny the passion between them is still smoldering. With the watch behaving oddly at just the right moments, Rory and Deacon might receive the gift of a lifetime—if they’re willing to accept it.

Another wonderful Advent Stocking Stuffer short story from Dreamspinner Press, A Timely Gift by Kris T. Bethke has a hint of the magical about it while being essentially a second chance at love romance.

After a brief “thing” and separation when one leaves to pursue his dreams across the country, now years later Rory is about to reconnect with his past.  His ex, Deacon returns to town and runs into Rory just when both  need each other the  most.  But is it accident or is it due to Rory’s grandfather’s gift of his mysterious  pocketwatch at the Winter Solstice?

I loved everything about this slow second chance at love story. From Rory’s African Grey parrot Apollo to the injured Deacon and the naturally tender way the men reconnect and fall back into love once more.  The men, the dialogs and dynamics all felt relevant to the ages of the men and their situations.  All so nicely done and expected as I have loved this author’s stories before.

The only element here that felt a little underwhelming was the mystical “pocket watch”.  It honestly didn’t feel all that magical to me. It made a few noises but really seemed underutilized as a story element as was the Winter Solstice connection which wasn’t thoroughly explored.  As a storyline thread it was thin and I wish it was a much larger part of the story to give this a truly holiday feel it deserves.

Still A Timely Gift by Kris T. Bethke is a sweet second chance at love romance, one you won’t want to miss.

Cover Art by Paul Richmond is humorous and lively, just what I expect and want for my Advent Stocking Stuffer cover.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Hearts and Hazelnuts (States of Love) by Kris T. Bethke

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Mechanic Jordan Hart is down on his luck, so he gladly accepts a temporary job servicing tractors at a hazelnut farm in Newberg, Oregon. He doesn’t expect to be attracted to his boss, Beckett Shaw. Still working on embracing his bisexuality, he’s reluctant to start anything, but Beckett’s gentle coaxing convinces Jordan to take a risk.

Beckett has vowed not to get involved with anyone until he can restore the Shaw Farms name as a leader in hazelnuts. But there’s no denying his interest in the shy mechanic who shows up at his door. Just as they begin to find a balance, outside forces threaten to tear them apart. Job opportunities force Jordan out of the Portland area he loves so much. But when danger comes too close to Beckett, Jordan must decide if he can follow his heart to the Willamette Valley… and straight back to Beckett.

One of the first things Hearts and Hazelnuts (States of Love) by Kris T. Bethke does is make you want to head out and visit the Willamette Valley of Oregon as it’s a virtual love letter to that portion, in fact all of the state.  Lushly described, the scenery and locations alone are a draw for this sweet romance novella. Then you add to it a slow burn love story and the fascinating element of hazelnut farming, and Dreamspinner Press’ States of Love and Kris T. Bethke have come up with another winner.

For 109 pages, the author did a lovely job of letting Jordan and Beckett build a relationship through working together rather than  a sort of “instant impact/love”  you often find in the shorter stories.  The attraction is there but each man has other responsibilities and issues in their lives they also need to concentrate on…a very realistic element I appreciated.  Told from both men’s perspectives, we get to see the stress they are under as well as the hopes they have for each other and the future.

There is a minor drama/suspense angle here that I thought was resolved far too quickly but again this is a novella not a novel so there’s a constraint as far as words allowed.  That aside, I thought Hearts and Hazelnuts was a lovely, heartwarming romance by Kris T. Bethke.  It certainly made me want a cup of hazelnut coffee and more.  If you love contemporary romance, check out Hearts and Hazelnuts (States of Love) by Kris T. Bethke.   I definitely recommend it.

Cover art by Brooke Albrecht is not only beautiful and eye catching but perfect for the story.  Love it.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to be hosting Kris T. Bethke here today on her Hearts and Hazelnuts tour.

Thanks so much for hosting me today, and I’m so glad to be here!

How much of yourself goes into a character? A little bit of me always ends up in characters, and some much more than others. Sometimes I find my peculiar speech pattern creeping in, and then leave it as a character quirk. Sometimes characters have my likes and dislikes, or feelings about a particular subject. I find it really hard to completely separate myself from my characters, though I often make a concerted effort to make my character like/do/react differently than I would.

Does research play a role into choosing which genre you write?  Do you enjoy research or prefer making up your worlds and cultures? There’s never been a book where I didn’t have to research something. In my newest release, which is out tomorrow, I researched extensively about hazelnut farming. I found it way more fascinating than I ever imagined, and spent a good week reading and watching everything I could get my hands on, even though not all of it made it into the book. So I really enjoy research and learning, and use it in everything. Even when I create a new world or culture, it’s always rooted in something I started out researching, then changed and evolved for my own purposes.

Do you like HFN or HEA? And why? I like them both, but I find HFN more real. In fact, I think most books end with HFN. You never can know what the future will bring. So having the MCs solidly in love, and moving into the future, satisfies me deeply.

Do you read romances, as a teenager and as an adult? Yes! I was reading Harlequin romances years before it was appropriate, but I’ve always been a romantic at heart and romance makes up the bulk of my reading. When I do veer to other genres, it’s usually sci fi or paranormal, and even then, I like a romantic subplot

How do you feel about the ebook format and where do you see it going? I love the ebook format, though I will admit I resisted for years. There’s nothing like holding a book in your hand. But once I got on the ebook wagon, I was thrilled. It allows me to having thousands of titles at my fingertips without storage space issues. And they are a bit more affordable. I think it will only continue to grow. Though there are definite issues with piracy and undercutting prices, I think on the whole it’s a health market that will improve as time continues.

How do you choose your covers?  (curious on my part) I don’t always get to pick, but I usually get at least some input. With the ones that I get to hands on for, I mostly concern myself with the feeling of the cover. Does it convey the story within? Of course I want the models (if there are any) to look appropriate for my characters. But I focus more on the aesthetic. The cover for Hearts and Hazelnuts, for example, took a little back and forth with the artist, Brooke Albrecht. But in the end, she brought my vision to life. The rich, vibrant colors really sold it for me.

Have you ever put a story away, thinking it just didn’t work?  Then years/months/whatever later inspiration struck and you loved it?  Is there a title we would recognize if that happened? I have! To be honest, if I shelve something, I rarely go back to it. But I have a release in January, Ghost of a Chance, where this exact thing happened. Several years ago, I started writing it, but put it away because it just wasn’t working. A year ago, I pulled it out, dusted it off, reworked some things, and the story flowed from there. It’s even better than the original idea, and I love it.

With so much going on in the world today, do you write to explain?  To get away?  To move past?  To widen our knowledge?  Why do you write? All of these things, really. I write to escape, and to give my own opinions and thoughts and feelings voice. And to project hope. That, especially, I think. That in all the bad and scary going on, there is still love and the happy is still within reach. A lot of my characters are bisexual, too, which is a soapbox I get on. Bi-erasure, and the myths surrounding bi folk, really get under my skin. It hits close to home. So I like to show my bi characters finding love…and use them to educate and dispel some of those myths and fallacies.

What’s next for you as an author? I’ve got a lot coming up, as I’ve had a very productive writing year. A Timely Gift is out in December, which starts on solstice and ends on Christmas. And then in January, the first of my paranormal series releases. Ghost of a Chace is the the first in the Requiem Inc series with the Dreamspun Beyond line, with two more slated for release later next year.

A MelanieM Pre-Release Review: One in Vermilion by Kris T. Bethke

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

Wyatt Janson needed a change of scenery in the worst way, so he packed up his dog and moved to a small tourist town. When he spots a man in a vermilion beanie, he’s intrigued. Why would someone would wear such a hat in the middle of summer? Their paths keep crossing, and Wyatt soon learns that Truitt Rackley owns a dog grooming and training service. It’s the perfect opportunity for Wyatt to meet Tru.

What begins as friendship quickly blossoms into more. But Tru’s happy demeanor hides a sad past. The hat he wears is only one part of it. Tru needs Wyatt’s support as he deals with the fallout, and Wyatt is glad to be able to provide it. Now that he’s found Tru, he knows he’ll do whatever he must to keep him. Can two broken men find the happily ever after they’ve been searching for?

One in Vermilion by Kris T. Bethke is a sweet,  pretty much angst free romance.  Two men meet and bond over their love of their dogs, get to know one another, fall in love and  have a HEA.  Neither is really all that broken, just slightly hurt with life’s normal blows but nothing truly out of the ordinary.  It’s a slow build romance with even the dogs cutely getting into the picture.

I wish I felt a little more spark between Wyatt and Tru, they start as friends but I never felt much heat coming off the page, just a lovely connection such as deep friends would have.

The title is cute and the manner in which the author pulls it into the story works.  It’s just a nice, sweet romance all around, a little bland but cute.

Cover art says it all.  Liked the cover, it’s got all the characters right there.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Kris T. Bethke here today answering our author questions about writing, and their latest release, His Needs.  Welcome, Kris!

~Our Kris T. Bethke Interview~

  • Where do you normally draw your inspiration for a book from?  A memory, a myth, a place or journey, or something far more personal?

The truth, though clichéd as it is, is everywhere. Every little thing in my life can cause a plot bunny. A conversation, a song, a name, a trip. There’s no telling what will set of a spark and what will make it grow. But, there is always a little piece of me and what’s going on in my life at the moment in every book, whether intentional or unintentional. For His Needs, it was my sister being on painkillers after surgery, my love of the holidays, and knitting.

  • Are you a planner or a pantzer when writing a story? And  why?

I’m a combo writer. I start by pantzing, then get a rough outline for where I want the story to go and what I want to happen in general terms, and then I’m back to pantzing for the actual writing of the salient details.

  • Contemporary, supernatural, fantasy, or science fiction narratives or something else?  Does any genre draw you more than another when writing it or reading it and why does it do so?

I almost always write contemporary, because I find that’s where my muse directs me, though I’m branching out into paranormal next! As a reader though, I’m very eclectic, though comtep, supernatural, and sci fi seem to be my biggest draws.

  • If you had a character you’ve written you would write differently now at this time in your writing career, who would it be and why?

I think that would be Jack, from my first published short story Worth It. At his core he’d remain the same, but I would like to explore his motivation more. And I think I’d like to make him less “romantic ideal” and more real.

  • Can a author have favorites among their characters and do you have them?

Absolutely! Just as a reader has a favorite character, it’s easy for authors to as well. I have a particular fondness for Matt and Alex from my short story Hero Worship, which is why I keep revisiting them in my Friday flash fics. And honestly, I still love Travis and Noah, and I’m really glad I get to share them with the world now.

  • If you were to be stranded on a small demi-planet, island, or god forbid LaGuardia in a snow storm, what books would you take to read or authors on your comfort list?

Hard one! I’d need all things Santino Hassel for gritty, real, and hot, some Mary Calmes for fluffy, tropey goodness, and my favorite book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.

  • How early in your life did you begin writing?

I was telling myself stories at an early age, but I really started writing in fifth grade. I was ten, there was a creative writing section in our curriculum, and I found out I could actually be good at this writing thing if I worked at it.

  • Were you an early reader or were you read to and what childhood books had an impact on you as a child that you remember to this day and why?

I was read to before I was even out of the womb, and my mom made it a point to read to us a lot. My siblings and I are all big readers, and have been since a very young age. Dr. Seuss, of course, made a huge impression, especially On Beyond Zebra and McElligot’s Pool. And when I was a preteen and teenager, it was all about teen romances.

  • If you were writing your life as a romance novel, what would the title be?

Unrequited

Thanks for having me on the blog today!

Thank you, Kris, for coming.  We were delighted to have you here.

He’s only ever allowed himself to think of Travis as the next best thing to an older brother, but by the light of the Christmas tree, Noah finally sees Travis’s true feelings. And in that moment, everything changes.

When faced with opposition and a Christmas nothing like they imagined, will their hopes for the future be enough to carry them through?

I really enjoyed this story.  Travis has loved Noah for over twenty years without the younger man’s knowledge, but the time he’s spending with Noah during his recovery is constantly pushing his restraint.  When Noah catches a glimpse of Travis’ real feelings he is forced to come clean to the man, who surprisingly doesn’t have any objections.  These characters work well together and though their sexual relationship grows fast they have known each other so long it doesn’t feel so rushed.

I do have to say that although Travis is considered part of Noah’s family by them, he doesn’t seem to fully consider himself part of the family and doesn’t feel comfortable with some things.  This truly broke my heart reading how much Travis wasn’t comfortable with.  We only see Noah’s thoughts from Travis’ point of view, but that doesn’t make it hard to understand him as Noah is very open and honest about his emotions.  I did think it was a bit strange that all of Noah’s siblings and spouses knew how Travis felt for years, but only Noah and his parents did not.

Cover art by AngstyG is beautiful and I love the connection models seem to have.
