A VVivacious Review: Improper Fraction by V.L. Locey

O’Malley Ramsey and Garrison Rook have been inseparable from a really young age.  Mal has been in love with his best friend ever since he learnt what love was but the day they both head off for college sees Mal’s wildest dreams come true as Garrison might not be as straight as he wants to appear. They both make fervent promises to come back to each other but while Mal keeps his end of the promise Garrison breaks his.

When Mal and Garrison come face to face four years later, will Garrison be able to convince Mal to forgive him and will Mal be willing to let go of the hurt and embrace a chance at love?

This book was amazing. God! I am really loving this author when I picked up this book I hadn’t read anything by this author but when I finally got around to reading this book I had read two shorts by this very author and I really liked both of those. And this kind of turned out to be the cherry on the top, because it was so good. Ah! Just so amazing!

First off, right of the bat, I have got to say how much I loved all the characters, I mean not only Garrison and Mal but Mrs Rook like completely stole my heart. Not only for all the humour she added to situations but she felt like such a parent getting Garrison in embarrassing situations it was so cute. In fact, I liked the entire Rook and Ramsey family, they were all like such well- developed characters and I liked them all so much.

Mal is a math aficionado and just that fact makes my heart flutter. I am so math crazy that it was amazing to read about someone even crazier than me about math, I just can’t get that scene were Garrison is telling Mal to stop doing percentages inside his head out of my head, it was just so ingenious like Mal would totally be the kind of guy to refute everything with mathematical exaction.

I had a little more problem liking Garrison because his excuses for not keeping his promise kind of don’t sit well with me. But once I got over that, I really liked him too. I especially loved Garrison and Mal together because whenever they were together it felt like they belonged there. This especially helped a lot in the beginning of the book when the characters weren’t as established and I was still trying to wrap my head around Garrison, because the kind of chemistry Garrison and Mal shared from the very beginning was priceless. They totally had the Oh My God these kisses are combustible kind of chemistry. It was easy to see how much they belonged together especially when I had my doubts about if they should but once all the doubts cleared up these two were just such a rock-solid couple.

This story doesn’t only focus on the romance and it has a plotline that isn’t based on the romance but no matter how I didn’t like that aspect of the plot, I think I liked how it was used to make a point and further the plot and be that additional push to get things in the right place.

Overall, this story was amazing like hot chocolate. It was just what I needed and it made me feel so good. Loved it, loved it and definitely recommend it.

A MelanieM Review: First Season (Harrisburg Railers #2) by RJ Scott & VL Locey

Layton wants success, Adler wants family, how can love make both these things possible?

Layton Foxx works hard for what he has. The condo, the career, the chance to make his mark, is all down to the sacrifices he has made. With tragedy in his past, he doesn’t want or need love. Then he meets Adler Lockhart, the extroverted, sexy winger for the Harrisburg Railers and abruptly he can’t avoid love even if he wanted to.

Adler Lockhart has had everything handed to him his whole life. Cars, villas, cash, college tuition at the finest Ivy League schools. The only things he doesn’t have are parents who care or the love of a good man. Then Layton walks into his privileged life and shows him what real love can be like.

First of all, this book has oodles of elements that just set off the book sparklers for me.  Starts with the authors because I love R.J. Scott and V.L. Locey, then moving swiftly to the facts that you also have hockey players (be still my heart), a opposites attract trope and a good dollop of hurt/comfort?  Count me in!

When you mix that all together in the story First Season, it all comes together in a romance that hooked me in from the very start, made me love its characters from the main couple to the secondary cast and kept me invested as well as connected in everyone’s story.  First Season is the second in the Harrisburg Railers series and while you don’t necessarily have to have read the first one , it does help to give you background information here on the couple Layton Foxx is coming to help.  They make appearances is as does the next person getting his story.

But your heart and focus is on Layton and Adler and their slow, awkward, often painful dance towards love and a relationship.  I absolutely loved  Ads.  At one point he’s described as a Irish Setter, ginger, bouncy, lots of energy, maybe a small attention span….you can so see it … totally adorable in the huge body of a hockey player.  He also has almost no filters in his brain…so what he’s thinking is out his mouth without a checkpoint with obvious ramifications.  All because of a upbringing with parents that had little to do with him and left him with no social skills.  Talk about someone hungry for love and a home.

Then he meets damaged Layton Foxx who comes from an opposite background, but one where he can’t stand to go back to.  PTSD and a pain-filled past has him trapped in another way and landed him in a job filled full of his worst nightmares…jocks.  Watching Layton having to navigate his way around while trying to do the best for his clients AND deal with the confusing attentions of Adler? The dynamics are interesting, heartbreaking, funny, and often a bit convoluted even to the people involved themselves.

Locey and Scott also address the professional side of hockey and coming out, the costs to the team, the individual players etc.  I thought this was handled beautifully.

First Season came very close to a 5 star rating but I felt that parts of Layton’s story and his clear lack of recovery needed to be further addressed.  I wasn’t sure if Layton was still in therapy (I could have missed it to be honest), but the extent of his trauma I thought needed more attention here.  Not in details but in their relationship and his family towards the end after Adler and Layton decided they were it for one another. A phone call and a comment about one portion of their sexual life didn’t quite get to the depth of the trauma they are dealing with.

Others may feel the authors dealt with it to their satisfaction.

Either way, I feel it’s a wonderful story. One I absolutely recommend.    It has memorable characters, a team of hockey players to love and a series to look forward to each new release!  Bring them on!

A Julia Review: Snap Shot (Cayuga Cougars #1) by V.L. Locey

Mario McGarrity has been around the block – and rink – more than a few times.

He’s creeping up on retirement age, has some dings and dents, and says what’s on his mind. Not exactly what most would consider a luxury ride, but his beautiful Lila – the transgender woman who stole his heart – loves him like no other woman ever has despite a little rust here and there.

Everything is good – no, great – aside from the distance issue, until a surprise from Lila’s past crops up and moves in with her. Can Mario be the family man that Lila needs, or is this one game the old vet is unable to skate in?

Snap Shot is the first volume in a new series by author V. L. Locey revolving around a hockey team and their members’ romantic adventures. Although this is my first book by this author, she has written several other novels taking place in the same universe.

The story is told through the eyes of Mario McGarrity – or Seamus, as he is referred to by his lover Lila. I took an immediate liking to this grumpy, big-hearted half-Scottish, half-Italian man in no small part thanks to the author’s wonderfully humorous and fast-paced style of writing. Reading his inner thoughts and monologues (as well as his prayers/dialogues with Holy Mother Mary) was very entertaining.

Lila (or Madame Lila) is a truly lovely and endearing person and it is not hard to see why Mario has fallen for her the way he did. The way he describes all of her little habits and quirks in vivid detail make you realize how enraptured he is by her. Their relationship is one of the two main focuses of the story but there is little to no drama or confrontation there – they both love each other dearly and express that love freely and openly. The point of conflict stems largely from the second focus: the way Lila’s teenage son Langley suddenly enters Mario’s life with her.

Although I liked the way Langley’s relationship to Mario develops over time, I really wish he would have been flashed out a bit more as an individual rather than mostly being presented as just a “typical” teenager rebelling against his parents. We get to see brief glimpses of his personality and interests here and there but all in all he came off as a bit generic. This was rather surprising as the other characters felt much more lifelike. Arguably, this might have been intentional due to Mario’s narration and his perception of Lila’s son.

The characters accompanying the protagonists were all quite interesting and colourful. As far as I understand, some of them get to play bigger roles in other books by the author. My personal favourite was August, an adorable young hockey player who takes quite the shine to Mario.

The novel contains several sex scenes between Mario and Lila including the use of toys. They are all written in a very explicit way and there is certainly no shortage of erotic moments over the course of the book.

All in all, this was an enjoyable read and most of the characters felt quite real and likeable. The author maintained a quick-paced and snappy writing style that motivates you to keep on reading.

The cover art by Rêverie Design and Formatting seems a bit bland. Something more colourful and eye-catching would have been much more suitable for the dazzling Madame Lila in my opinion.

“You do have a way with words,” she sighed humorously.

“You want a redhead with flapping gums, hook up with Kalinski.”

“If he and Daniel weren’t wed, I’d do so, and happily,” she teased, pushing one thin strap off her shoulder.

“Over my dead body,” I snarled, just as she wanted.

The other strap shimmied down her arm. I gave my dick another tug, my gaze locked on her as she wiggled free of her nightgown, slowly revealing her bare body.

“Fuck,” I moaned when she turned to face me, arms over her head in a pose aimed to titillate.

It worked. Oh man, how it worked. She was stunningly beautiful and as sexy as a fucking pagan goddess. I ached to get my hands on her, but I knew she had a wee bit more prancing to do.

A MelanieM Release Day Review:Holly & Hockey Boots by V.L. Locey

holly-hockey-bootsMinor league goalie Adam Seiger is a nice guy. He’s kind, cute, and a little quirky (but show me a goalie who isn’t) and he loves to interact with fans. During a meet and greet after a game Adam meets Cason Reyes, a hard-working young man with stunning amber eyes and a smile as sweet as a candy cane. Desperate to see Cason again, Adam does something more than a little naughty.

To add insult to the egg nog, it appears that one little white lie may end Adam’s chance of having a merry Christmas with a new boyfriend. Will he end up with nothing but a lump of coal in his stocking, instead of the man who owns his heart?

Adorable, totally adorable.  That describes both the story and the main character of Adam Seiger.  Gay, black, Canadian, minor league hockey player, adopted by his Aunt and Uncle when young, this man could have been a Mountie, he’s so sweet, nice, and yes, adorable…even in his faults.  That would be the lag time in between what comes out his mouth and the time it takes his brain to think it might be a bad idea to say that.    His brain goes awandering while the mouth just motors on.  Not always a great thing as Adam finds out when he spies the man of his dreams during a game.

I’ve enjoyed V.L. Locey’s stories before.  The author always manages to put in enough interesting quirks to their characters and storylines that it makes me take notice.  Extra spice, a V.L. Locey punch as it were.  Its the same here.  The other character?  Cason Reyes, is biracial with a fascinating background and a nephew to raise.  Both men have background that actually made me growl in frustation that I didn’t get enough time with each man’s family or get to delve deep enough into their stories.  They are that interesting and the people in their families we get to know are believable enough that we want more time with them too.

Other special touches?  The interaction with the team members.  Ray, Adam’s roomate with his own special kink?  Hilarious!  Plus I liked their acceptance of a gay teammate without any special acknowledgement or fanfare while mentioning that might not be realistic in the major leagues.  Nice reality check.  And then there was the holly branches.  I’ll leave the significance of that to the story.

I’d love to see Locey continue this into a series or at least give us a followup  story.  These two certainly deserve it.  We need to see what happens next.  I want more!  After reading this, you will too.
