Review:  A Broken Blade (The Halfling Saga #1) by Melissa Blair

Rating:  4.25⭐️🌈

A Broken Blade, the first book in the completed The Halfling Saga by Melissa Blair, an indigenous writer from Canada, is a fascinating read.

It’s Blair’s first published novel and it’s a dark fantasy that features a bisexual woman protagonist, a Halfing, who’s as layered and realistic as I have read recently.

Starting from the very first paragraph, the reader is drawn into a dark narrative because Keera, the King’s Blade or assassin is also a drunk who is losing her edge.

She’s become a guilt ridden alcoholic, all the deaths of innocents she’s taken on the King’s orders, most her own people, Halflings who only wanted freedom from slavery haunting her in a very specific way. She’s self harming, a cutter.

She’s also in charge of the Shades, a group of assassins of Halfling women, stolen as children and raised to become the monsters they are.

In a dying fantasy world of humans who hate the Fae and Halfings (those who have Fae blood), all of the Halfings physically are owned by the King.

Blair creates a realistic world where the poor are starving, lining the streets with their corpses while the King and his sadistic son live extremely well, shored up by his powerful assassins.

Until an enemy known as the Shadow strikes against the King, and he sends his Blade to find him.

This is a enemy to lovers dark fantasy with the main character having a strong tragic sapphic romantic backstory.  The main male character isn’t as well written as she is, and that impacts their dynamics. He’s always a lesser character and while he’s still a good one, this aspect of the story reduces the power of the relationship.

I found Keera a trapped and emotionally haunted character. She’s constantly trying to escape her surroundings only to find that those around her haven’t been truthful.

Whether you as a reader find that is a betrayal to her or not is up to you.

Who and what she actually is remains part of the series mystery.  It seems that it isn’t really revealed until the end.

As the series is finished, I did skim over the descriptions of the next stories (I know, bad me), and Keera’s journey is anguished, filled with deep tragedy, and relapse. Some people weren’t happy with the ending.

Was it dark? That would make sense because Keera actually said she should pay for the deaths of the innocent victims.

I don’t know. But as tough a read as this might be, I’ll probably continue reading. The main character is real and damaged by her choices.  I’ll see her out.

Is this a series for you? There’s trigger warnings plenty. SA, torture, self harm, violence, alcohol abuse, and other issues. So only you can make the decision.

My body is made of scars,

some were done to me,

but most I did to myself.

Keera is a killer. As the King’s Blade, she is the most talented spy in the kingdom. And the king’s favored assassin. When a mysterious figure moves against the Crown, Keera is called upon to hunt down the so-called Shadow. She tracks her target into the magical lands of the Fae, but Faeland is not what it seems . . . and neither is the Shadow. Keera is shocked by what she learns, and can’t help but wonder who her enemy truly is: the King that destroyed her people or the Shadow that threatens the peace?

As she searches for answers, Keera is haunted by a promise she made long ago, one that will test her in every way. To keep her word, Keera must not only save herself, but an entire kingdom.

Fans of fast-paced high fantasy such as A Court of Thorns and Roses series, The Inadequate Heir, and From Blood and Ash author Jennifer L. Armentrout, will enjoy the fierce female characters, sapphic representation, and fantasy romance of A Broken Blade.

The Halfling Saga

Review:  The Wren in the Holly Library (Oak & Holly Cycle Book 1) by K.A. Linde

Rating:  3⭐️🌈

🌈 for Bisexual main character

I really wanted to like this story but issues just kept creeping into the narrative that stopped me from being fully invested in the characters, their relationships and motivations as well as the mythology that Linde insists on using as a framework for her storyline.

It’s not the dark fantasy, because I’m a true fan of the genre, it’s in the manner that the author is constructing the characters and storylines.

Kierse, the damaged thief with the abusive background from her criminal mentor is the Belle substitute here. She’s the thief who’s caught in the Holly Library the “Monster” (it’s in the description) , also known as Grave .

Their relationship is part of the issue.  Or maybe her treatment is. There isn’t much chemistry between them and the romance just seems to appear, albeit with Kierse making the obligatory resistance response.

She’s got a bisexual background with a missing ex girlfriend that is part of an underdeveloped storyline. As well as a well described traumatic history that gives her the realistic, raw foundation her character would require.

But how the dynamic plays into the physical abuse and the future degradation that is inflicted upon her as part of her “roles” with Grace starts a strange division and changes her past/current personality and the new narrative path of the author’s without the needed context.

Grave, the mage “Monster “ , is a person who has an otherworldly framework around him that’s easily recognizable ,as is the other main enemy MC. This aspect of his character and storyline is primarily due to the many hints and story Easter eggs the author has scattered throughout the book. Grave just isn’t someone who is an engaging personality.  Again, Linde works against the story romance by having every single character (Kierse’s friends and frenemies) repeatedly telling Kierse exactly how untrustworthy Grave.

After a while we have to figure this is a major plot point.

Then for me it’s the mythology and underdeveloped magic which didn’t really make sense.  Linde chose to use certain snippets or aspects of certain myths of Irish or Celtic culture but it’s not clear or successful.  Especially with her  usages of wrens. She’s partly using St. Stephen’s , a tale of unfortunate timing, as well as some Druids mythology that includes wrens, none of which translates well to a North American continent where our numerous species of wrens do just fine in winter and this aspect of the book would have not context.  So without going beyond the surface or substance or making the material adjust accordingly ( as other authors have in great detail and depth), this just doesn’t work.

This came very close to a DNF but I wanted to see where Linde was going with the characters and story. Disappointing and not sure I’m going forward with the series.   Too bad because it had such potential.

Some things aren’t supposed to exist outside of our imagination.

He’s charming. Quietly alluring. Terrifying. But he knows talent when he sees it; it’s just a matter of finding her price.

Now she’s locked into a dangerous bargain with a creature unlike any other. She’ll sacrifice her freedom. She’ll offer her skills. Together, they’ll put their own futures at risk.

But he’s been playing a game across centuries—and once she joins in, there will be

STRW Author BookSynopsis

Grayson Black has never forgiven himself for not saving his identical twin brother, Jet, from a savage beating at their father’s hands ten years ago. Jet’s near-death never would have happened if Gray hadn’t been so focused on his boyfriend at the time. He has sworn to take care of his brother ever since. Gray can’t afford a distraction from his self-imposed mission, the type of distraction presented by the gorgeous blond showing up at their gigs.

Kris Larson is a firefighter with the San Francisco Fire Department. Since splitting from his girlfriend, his favorite way to spend nights off is watching the Black Brothers play in the bars of the Bay Area, especially the guitarist. But it’s not until the brothers are left homeless after a fire at their apartment building that Kris has the opportunity to know the real person behind the brooding façade.

Gray fights his attraction to Kris, but with a meddlesome twin who just wants him to be happy, it’s a losing battle. Before Gray and Kris can have a lasting relationship, though, Gray must learn to forgive himself, let go of the past, and lay more than one demon to rest.

STRW Spotlight Book Excerpt

I DOZED most of the way back to Richmond, Kris waking me up every now and then to check on me. I woke once and saw the exit to a local hospital, but when we didn’t take it, I looked at Kris and raised an eyebrow.
“I’m not taking you to a hospital. I’m having the hospital come to you.” This confused me for a second, but all I could focus on was the fact I wasn’t going to an emergency department. After spending so much time in one with Jet, there was no way I was ever going to voluntarily go to one myself. Between having Kris next to me and the gentle rocking of the truck, not to mention a throbbing head, it was hard to stay awake.
We pulled into the drive of the Larson home and Kris was quick to exit the truck and pick me up once more. Carrying me through the front door, we were immediately bombarded with my brother’s concerned voice.
“Oh. My. God. What the hell happened? Holy shit, Gray, are you okay? What… what…?” I grabbed Jet’s hand to reassure him as Kris placed me on the couch.
“Ease up, bro, I’m fine. Twisted my ankle is all.”
“And he smacked his head and has a concussion.”
“Ugh, thanks, Kris.”
“You’re welcome.”
Carol came in and made a fuss, grabbing a bag of peas and easing my foot onto an ottoman. Jet and Carol were making a palaver, talking about hospitals and why I wasn’t already at one. I heard Kris mention something about a Dr. Nichols arriving soon, but with the madness going on around me, I tuned them out. Carol seemed relieved upon hearing the doctor’s name and stopped fussing, then went into the kitchen and returned with a bag of corn for my head.
A minute later there was a knock at the door and I heard someone being ushered inside, muttering something about an idiot who was “always slipping on the same damn rock.”
“Oh, my apologies. I thought it was Kris I was seeing.” Dr. Nichols chuckled as he crouched on the floor next to me. He pulled a penlight out of his black doctor’s bag and waved it in my eyes. I squinted at the intrusion to my pupils while he peppered me with questions.
I was aware of everyone standing around, watching. Kris stood off to the side, and out of my peripheral vision I could see the strained look on his face. I sensed he was staying out of the way, not wanting to encroach on what the doctor was doing, but close enough to keep an eye on me. The doctor continued to prod and poke my head, flash the penlight at me some more and ask the same questions. I guess he just wanted to be sure. I insisted I felt fine, just a headache, no nausea or dizziness, but my ankle hurt the worst.
I shouldn’t have mentioned my ankle, because next thing I knew, the doctor was poking that too, and it hurt like a bitch. After he wrote a prescription for some pain meds, a note for work, and bandaged my ankle, the doctor turned his attention to Kris.
“You know what to look for, don’t you, Kris?”
Kris nodded once. “I do.”
“Excellent, he has a mild concussion and a sprained ankle. I expect his ankle is going to give him the most pain, but keep an eye on his head just to be on the safe side. You can never be too careful with head injuries.”
After a few minutes of the doctor talking with Doug and Carol and making Kris promise to take me to the ER if my condition worsened, he waved goodbye and saw himself out the door. Jet was immediately next me, looking all concerned and flustered, his own injury probably at the forefront of his mind.

STRW Author Bio and Contacts

RJ Jones

RJ started as a reader and eventually made the progression to reviewing. It wasn’t until two men popped into her thoughts, insisting on telling her their story that she started to write. It started with one scene. A hot and dirty one in the shower.
RJ’s initial thought was if she could write their scene then they’d shut up and allow her to concentrate on other aspects of the day. That shower scene was 3000 words long and three hours of work.  But they didn’t shut up.  They told her their entire story and she didn’t sleep for days.  Sometimes she couldn’t keep up with what they were telling her and she had to keep a notebook by the bed.

Whilst RJ was writing their story a side character decided he needed his story told too. Then other characters followed suit.
You see the problem? If RJ ever wants to sleep again then she needs to write.

RJ is a wife and a mother to two boys. Even her dog is a boy.

She is surrounded by males.

RJ writes emotionally charged, character driven romances. Her guys will always get their HEA, but it will never be easy.
