Damages Incurred Excerpt

It was dark when he stepped out into the back entrance of the penthouse. His footsteps echoed through the halls as he walked. George should be in bed as he was generally an early riser, but Jesse half expected him to be consoling his pain with a slave.
He paused in front of the play room, swallowing hard. What if his actions had been the final straw in George moving on? What if…
It was too painful to finish the thought. He set his hand on the handle, telling himself he could face what he found inside. He turned it silently and pushed the heavy door forward. It was dark inside, only the lights of the city illuminating the toys spread over the massive wall. The door was soundproof, but now that it was open, all he heard was the light snore of a slave. He closed the door quickly and then pressed a hand into his aching chest. He stalked forward, seeing the flicker of a fire on the wall as he approached the living room.
He stepped around the corner to find George looking pensive staring into the fire, drink in hand. He paused, waiting for an invitation. One never came. George acted as though he didn’t see him. Jesse opened his mouth, but he didn’t know what to say. There wasn’t an apology that could even cover the pain he’d put George through.
He fell to his knees. “Forgive me,” he whispered.
George didn’t respond. Jesse fell forward pressing his forehead into the cool hardwood floor. Warm hands closed around his arms, dragging him to his feet, and he was enveloped in George’s arms. His eyes started to mist, and he couldn’t catch a full breath. It was all too much to bear. He’d left his heart when he left George, and there were no words for what it felt like to be back here. He buried his face in George’s neck and wrapped his arms around him. George kissed every spot he could reach on Jesse in their position.
It was so much more than dominant and submissive like this. Jesse’s heart ached. The pain radiated through his bones. He’d been holding off losing it for so long he hadn’t even realize how bad the pain had gotten, how numb he’d been.

About J. R. Gray:
When not staying up all night writing, J.R Gray can be found basking in the warm glow of the Miami sun, or at the gym where it’s half assumed Gray is a permanent resident. A dominant, pilot, and sword fighting enthusiast, Gray finds it hard to be in the passenger seat of any car. Gray frequently interrupts real life, including normal sleep patterns, to jot down nonsense. The bane of Gray’s existence are commas, and even though it’s been fully acknowledged they are necessary, they continue to baffle and bewilder.

If Gray wasn’t writing…well, that’s not possible. The buildup of untold stories would haunt Gray into an early grave or possibly a mental institution where the tales would end up on the walls in crayon and finger paint.

A Mika Review: Designs of Desire (Desires Entwined #1) by Tempeste O’Riley

Standard

Rating:  3 out of 5 stars

Designs of Desire coverArtist James Bryant has forearm crutches in every color from rainbow for fun to sleek black for business. He even has a pair with more paint splatters than metal. After his family’s rejection and abuse from a man he thought loved him, James only just gets through the day by painting. He lives in constant fear that he’s not worthy of anything, let alone love.

As CEO of his company, Carrington Enterprises, Seth Burns is a take-charge kind of guy, and he is instantly smitten by the artist helping with his newest project. When he witnesses James suffer a panic attack, a protective instinct he never knew he had kicks in. He truly believes nothing is unobtainable—including James—if he’s willing to put in the time and effort.

James is shy and confused by Seth’s interest in him as a person. With Seth’s support, can he work through his fears to finally find the true love he deserves, or will someone finally land the crushing blow he won’t survive?

Hmm, where do I start? It was an extremely quick relationship to begin with. I mean, one moment on the page James is introduced to Seth, the next it seems that Seth is sticking his tongue down his throat. There were some things I didn’t understand or had issues with. It didn’t come across as James agreeing with some of the things that he got involved with. Yes he spoke up, but did that mean he agreed to be in a D/s relationship?  I honestly didn’t think he knew what it meant in the beginning. I found Seth to be over bearing, aggressive and down right condescending. Don’t get me wrong I didn’t totally dislike him, just for a majority of the book. I felt he came on extremely too strong to someone who’s been abused in multiple ways. I disagreed with how the character of James allowed everyone in his life to take over.

I didn’t understand the relationship between Seth and James primarily because I felt like certain components were missing in this story. James past should have been better addressed, maybe in a prologue. James’ family issue was another issue, it didn’t really have much explanation. And then the bad guys came out of left field. It seemed like the reader was expected to understand certain things. Also it felt like “the accident” was talked around. I guess if we really put two and two together we’ll get it. I didn’t expect riddles; I’m honestly not clear on the car part of the situation.

I felt like the “mystery” was really secondary to the story, it felt like an afterthought. I did find myself enjoying it more as the story progressed, although I wish for a little more details. Certain characters grabbed me more than others. Rhys, however late he entered the party. and Chase were two of those.  Chase was a little petulant but that was okay. Seth only grew on me because of his treatment of James. James deserved some happiness. I mean everything bad that could happen, happened to him.

All in all, I liked the story just wished for more…of a little of everything here. I recommend this to people with patience, who are familiar with the bdsm theme.

Cover artist Reese Dante. After reading the book I felt the cover was accurately correct. It helped me visualize the bracelets and rings that James needed.
