Review: They Call Him Levity (Welcome Boulevard, #1) by Davidson King

Rating: 4🌈

I enjoyed They Call Him Levity (Welcome Boulevard, #1) by Davidson King. I thought King’s characters were all very well defined, given fully fleshed out personalities and lives.

It didn’t matter whether the character was crime boss Salvatore Grillo, or the professional beggars Levity, Clove and Muse with their poverty level lives and realistic low expectations for their future, or the endearing Jaquelyn, Sal’s on the spectrum younger step sister. Each one felt real, and grounded in a real life vision of the world.

The romance as it develops between Levity and Sal is sweet and feels genuine, despite the imbalance in their status and age. Somehow the author lessens that impact in their dynamic enough that it’s not the thing that matters.

Another positive is Sal’s relationship with his step sister, Jaquelyn. King wrote her as being a functioning on the spectrum individual but treated within her family as someone to be ashamed of because of her disability. We see Jaquelyn with her hobbies, her friends, as any 17 year old girl would have, even with a crush. The mistreatment here comes from a parent, which makes it also seem realistic, unfortunately.

My cons are with the aspect of Levity that deal with Sal’s father, Sal’s stepmother, their characters and that entire storyline.

While the others plot threads felt more full developed, the whole bit with the step mother came across as forced . She was already ā€œhissing ā€œ from the moment we met her. Everything else was perfectly transparent as to where the plot was headed next. It just needed more work.

The ending was lovely. And we get set up for Clove’s book to come.

If you like a sweet romance with a hint of gangster and suspense, Levity might be a good choice for you.

They Call Him Levity (Welcome Boulevard Book 1)

Description:

Levity works the streets of Welcome Boulevard, begging people for money. It keeps food in his belly, a leaky roof over his head, and he gets to do it with his best friend, Clove. No, it’s not the ideal life, but he does what he must to survive.

Salvatore Grillo is a man who is used to getting what he wants. He’s a loyal brother to his autistic sister, runs numerous business empires, and knows how to make people to bend to his will. It’s not often someone comes along and shakes things up. And then Levity smiles at him.

Levity’s idea to pull in more money draws Salvatore’s attention, and while being the focus of a crime boss should be terrifying, Levity is intrigued by the man. Not to mention, Sal is as gorgeous as he is powerful. The two gravitate toward one another and soon are wrapped up tightly in each other’s worlds. When enemies try to break through their doors and their lives, Salvatore has to do everything in his power to save not just himself but Levity too.

Not knowing who is behind all the chaos or when they will strike makes their happily ever after almost impossible. Time’s running out for Sal and Levity. Will they survive, or will their story end before it’s even begun?

Teen shelter volunteer Rich searches for love until Diego, from LVMPD Search and Rescue, finds him.

After declaring his love life officially dead, Rich wonders if maybe he should stick with his shifter book boyfriends instead. It’s not as if he has much free time to date anyway. Between working long hours at a coffee shop, guarding his sodas from his hygienically challenged roommates, and running the programming at the Vegas LGBTQ teen shelter he founded – how could there ever be space for love in his life?

Diego Espinoza enjoys taking his downtime from working Search and Rescue, at the Lucky Cup coffee shop. He can set up his laptop, peruse good sport climbing spots and observe the blond barista he’s been pining over for a while. He imagines that the pretty boy has more offers than he knows what to do with, so it takes Diego time to work up the nerve to approach him.

Rich isn’t so sure about the rough looking Diego – even if he’s always thought he was hot – but once he decides to gives Diego a chance, there’s an immediate heat and connection that takes him by surprise. As they learn more about each other and try to find the way to a future together, strange and scary things start to happen.

It isn’t until Rich is injured in a bizarre accident that it becomes clear that there’s someone out there who not only doesn’t want Rich to find love – they want him dead.

Excerpt

Espinoza regarded Rich. ā€œI heard you tell your coworker, Artie, that you were excited about your first date with some guy named Jay, that it seemed like you really clicked online and you couldn’t wait to see if things would work out with him in person.ā€

Rich’s jaw hung open. The guy had a lot of nerve. ā€œYou’ve been eavesdropping on me?ā€

Espinoza pointed to the area by the espresso machines where the creams and sweeteners were kept. ā€œI was adding sugar to my coffee and you were making a drink.ā€ He shrugged one shoulder. ā€œYou had your back to me, facing Artie at the register.ā€

And that little creep never let on that a customer was standing right behind me.

Rich didn’t discuss personal issues on the floor where customers might hear him. He kept his voice down in general, but had he realized Espinoza was right there, he wouldn’t have spoken at all. Rich pressed his lips together, his frustration and anger growing.

ā€œThat’s none of your business.ā€

Espinoza nodded, still eyeing him in a way that made Rich want to drop his pants.

ā€œYou’re right. It’s not. But I’d hoped to have the chance to take you on a date, see if we hit it off.ā€ There was an odd shift in Espinoza’s eyes as they went from intense to melancholy. ā€œI understand. I guess things worked out with Jay and I missed my chance. My own fault for waiting to get up the nerve.ā€ Espinoza straightened, his demeanor back to how he’d always been as a customer. ā€œIn that case, I’ll take my usual after all.ā€

Rich’s gut twisted. He fiddled with the stack of cup sleeves, a wave of shame passing over him. It wasn’t as if Espinoza had pinched his ass or grabbed his crotch. He’d invited him to dinner, for chrissake. Rich had been out with scads of losers he’d never seen before when he’d gone on his Internet dates. Yet, someone he’d seen several time a week at the coffee shop for months, who’d always been polite to him, had asked him out and Rich had been snippy and rude. His recent dating history had transformed him into a cynical queen at the tender age of twenty-six.

ā€œActually, that’s not true. In reality, things with Jay-ā€œ

ā€œSorry I was late, there was a stalled car in one of the lanes on the Boulevard. Damn tourists.ā€

Artie breezed in the same way he always did – as if he was never to blame for a thing and that Rich should merely be grateful that the great and powerful Artie had arrived to serve coffee to the chosen few. Rich gritted his teeth, the cup sleeves bursting out of his hands, scattering across the counter, the rest falling to the floor. Espinoza bent over to retrieve them. Rich bit his knuckle at the sight.

God help me.

He quickly gazed down, haphazardly gathering the remaining bits of cardboard, hoping to disguise the flush in his cheeks as Espinoza straightened.

ā€œHere you go.ā€

Rich accepted them, the brief touch of Espinoza’s roughened fingers against his almost causing him to shiver. Almost.

ā€œT-thank you.ā€ He tittered nervously.

Perfect. I was hoping to sound like a dork.

ā€œYou were saying about Jay?ā€ Espinoza had his eyebrows arched, his gaze radiating ā€˜sultry’ once again.
