Another addition to the Portland Heat series, Danced Close has a character tie to previous books but can be read as a stand alone.
Kendall is a genderqueer wedding planner. Who doesn’t believe in true love. At least not for him. Todd is a newly sober guy working at the bakery where Kendall brings a lot of his clients. He doesn’t believe he deserves love. But he can flirt. When Kendall is desperate for a dance partner for a class he is taking, he practically begs Todd. And discovers the first of many secrets.
I really loved both of these characters from the start. Todd is shy, has little confidence, but he isn’t afraid to ask questions so as to not offend someone else. Because he would rather be a little embarrassed than hurt someone else. Kendall is unabashedly himself- refusing to change or “tone down” for anyone. This shy recovering hipster and no holds barred Kendall shouldn’t work- but they totally do.
There were so many things I loved about this book. Todd and the relationship he has with his grandmother. A genderqueer character who is not a caricature of himself. Even showing how genderqueer are looked down upon from people in their own community.
This was a slow build, super sweet romance. It could have gone super angsty but didn’t. Yet it still touched on issues and gave them respect. More than “it is what it is” and “oh my god my life is ruined”. I don’t want to spoil the book at all because you really should read it.
