📚Secondly and sadly, from Samhain  Publishing, a final announcement:

samhain-logo

Greetings, Samhain Readers.

It’s with a heavy heart that we announce Samhain Publishing will be closing at the end of February. Due to the declining sales we’ve been experiencing with this changing market we’ve come to the sad conclusion it’s time to call it a day.

The last of our new titles launch February 21st; I hope you will check them out and support them as you have so many other Samhain titles through the years.”

Our site will go dark at the end of the day, February 28th. Please take a few moments and visit, buy what you might have been planning on getting someday in the future, but download and back up your bookshelf because you won’t have access to it after February 28th.

Thank you for all your support through the eleven years we’ve been open. It’s been a pleasure to bring to market new voices in publishing and new works from familiar authors. From start to finish, we’ve always kept what the reader wants in mind and hope you enjoyed what we had to offer.

https://www.samhainpublishing.com

This is the second time we’ve had a closing announcement from Samhain  Publishing but it looks to be their final one.  Last time, they pulled back and tried to stay open but as you can see, it didn’t work.  Again, we bid them farewell.  Those of you who still have books there or books you wish to buy, please make note of their deadline to backup your Samhain bookshelf.

A Paul B Review: The Last Dragonet (Dragon Prophecies #1) by Shannon West and Susan E. Scott

Standard

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

the-last-dragonetLuca Wessex is a dragon spawn.  Born of a Red dragon and human mother who died in childbirth, Luca belongs to the lowest class of dragon society.  Keeping away from the gangs that most of the spawn seem to form, Luca just wants to get by in life.  He works a few hours a week at a corner market run by an elderly man who has been more of a father to him than his own abusive one.   His troubles begin when a couple of Golden dragons, the ruling class of dragons, ask him about the local gang leader.  Full blooded dragons look down on spawn so it looks like he is screwed no matter what happens.

Dmitri and his brother have been sent to get information from Luca.  Trying to convince the little spawn to cooperate is not easy.  Even being attacked by the gang of spawn is not enough to convince Luca that Dmitri is his best option.  The one thing he does know is that Luca does not know the true secret to his heritage and just how valuable he is to dragon society.  And one thing that a dragon knows about is treasure.  Dmitri knows that he must move quickly if he wants to have Luca not only as part of his horde but also in his life.

Dmitri takes Luca to his home in remote Russia.  If he thought fighting spawn in the United States was bad, Dmitri runs into more problems at home.  Dmitri’s parents are not thrilled to have the half breed staying in the mansion.  Dmitri’s neighbor, who happens to be Luca’s grandfather, wants Luca to stay with him, no matter what it takes.  And Dmitri must also convince Luca that he is not just part of his horde but wants something meaningful with him.

This is a great start to the new Dragon Prophecies series by West and Scott.  Poor Luca has had a rough life and things in the beginning do not seem to improve for him.  Being attacked and then virtually kidnapped for his own protection, he doesn’t really trust anybody.  He falls for Dmitri but only wants to pursue things if he is more than just a treasure to be hoarded.  The prophecy at the end of the book needs to be explored more in future books in this series.  I cannot wait for the next book to come out.

E Connor’s cover design is gorgeous.  A built man with his shirt open stands in front of a Russian mountain with a dragon circling the mountain.  It fits the book perfectly.

An Alisa Review: Night of the Blue Moon by Cassandra Pierce

Standard

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

night-of-the-blue-moon-by-cassandra-pierceScot North is intrigued when he is invited to a New Year’s Eve celebration on a private island. But his host is a mysterious man who seems to know a little too much about him…

In late December, Scot North is mysteriously summoned from his London home to a private island to ring in the new year with an unknown host. As midnight and the highly anticipated Blue Moon approach, Scot grows more and more baffled as to exactly why he’s been invited…and what is the connection between this New Year’s event and the bizarre encounter he experienced in an underground club the month before?

This book’s blurb left just enough questions to be intrigued.  Scot has been really out of it since his encounter a month ago.  He has also been having a mysterious man following him around and every time he tries to approach the man turns and disappears.

It’s a long road for Scot to find the answers to his questions, but he continues to hope that his host may have those answers.  Brendan is intriguing and does really well talking in circles when they meet.  You can just sense their loneliness; Scot has been trying to find someone while Brendan has kept himself hidden away.  They have a great connection and you can see the opportunity for the future.

The cover art by E Connors is nice and gives a nice setting for the story.

An Alisa Review: Under the Mistletoe (Happy Hollowdays) by Shawn Bailey

Standard

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

under-the-mistletoe-by-shawn-baileyBest friends Henry and Alan Grayling and Triston Lee decide to play a trick on Henry’s uptight younger brother Morgan, by having Triston kiss Morgan under the mistletoe at the yearly Christmas party. But the joke is on them when Morgan demands that Triston marry him and make an honest man out of him.

Triston has always been in love with Morgan, but Triston never wanted to ruin the friendship he had with Henry by putting the moves on the man’s brother. Triston never blinked when Morgan went away to college for four years, but now that he was back, all Triston wanted to do was get to know him better. Yet, he still hadn’t been prepared for Morgan to lay a heavy guilt trip on him just because he gave him a friendly peck on the lips.

So what if a couple of other drunken employees saw them kiss? Triston didn’t think any of them would remember the next day, and it certainly was a stupid reason for them to get married!

This was a nice short story, but I felt at times that I was missing something.  Triston is in love with his best friend’s brother, but has never told anyone and Morgan has always been attracted to Triston, but kept his secret also.  Both of them fight each other in their own ways, but it takes some time for them to see how they could work out.

I got confused by the characters actions in this story, one minute they were compassionate and then snippy and then acting spoiled.  It isn’t until the very end of the story that I could see them finally giving way to the other and not holding something back.  I had trouble connecting with these characters as it always felt like they were holding something back or there we other things going on in the background that I didn’t know about.

The cover art is nice, setting the Christmas setting with the decorations.

The Last Dragonet

Luca Wessex is  Dragon Spawn. Son of a human mother and a Red Dragon father, he has been trying his best all his life just to survive and get by. His father is abusive, his mother is dead and most recently, a vicious and dangerous group of neighborhood Spawn have begun trying to recruit him as a member of their gang. When a pushy and gorgeous Golden Dragon named Dmitri appears, full of questions about the gang and his role in it, Luca tries to cooperate, but he’s no snitch.  Suspicious, the gang attacks Luca one evening while he’s working, and he’s rescued by Dmitri, who then kidnaps him and—for his own safety, he claims—takes him to his home in what some say is the most remote spot on Earth, an area of Russia called the Kamchatka Peninsula.

Dmitri has come home with a treasure, because what Luca doesn’t know is that he isn’t a Spawn at all but a species called a dragonet and the very last one of his kind. Because of a mysterious prophecy, Dmitri has discovered the beautiful boy’s life is in danger and he wants desperately to save him. But Dmitri is up against not only another Dragon, but also a powerful mage. Dmitri takes Luca under his wing—literally—and they begin to navigate a minefield of love and dangerous ancient prophecy. For the first time in Dmitri’s life, something is becoming more important to him than treasure, if only he can hold onto it.

Ali Release Review: Touchdown (Game Day Book 1) by T.S. McKinney

Standard
Rating: 1.5-2 out of 5 stars
touchdown-by-ts-mckinneyAlexander Bryant has lived his entire life making everyone else happy. After meeting Lincoln, will he have the courage to finally do what makes him happy?

Alexander – I like to imagine myself a rebel – an ass-kicker that takes what he wants regardless of what others think. I make my own path and flip off the people who don’t agree. I laugh in the face of conflict. Nobody tells me what to do.

In reality, everything about me is a lie – past, present, and future. The Bryant name requires certain things and all my decisions are based on those requirements. I like football, but the family name demands I love it. I want to be an artist, but the family name demands I be a lawyer. The family demands I fall in love with a nice girl, but I’m falling for, well, the opposite of nice AND girl. I’m a coward and a liar.

Lincoln – I like to imagine myself a loner – a cold heartless bastard that takes what he wants. I lived the biggest part of my life with parents that were ashamed of me for more reasons that one could begin to count, so I trust no one.

I have a low tolerance for bullshit and hate liars.

So why did I go and fall in love with the biggest liar of them all?
Unfortunately this book didn’t work for me for a lot of different reasons.  I had issues right from the beginning because one of the first scenes is Alexander being pulled up onto the stage at a BDSM club and not wanting to go.  He was uncomfortable, had been drinking and didn’t know the Dom doing the scene (our other MC Lincoln). What kind of decent Dom would do this?  After this Lincoln sends Alexander’s friends away (Who leaves their friend with a total stranger like this?) and then Alexander wakes up naked in Lincoln’s bed the next morning.  That is the beginning of their “relationship”.  Nothing that happened in this first part of the story made any sense to me.  I couldn’t get my head around who would do these things.  I didn’t find it either sexy or romantic.  It was more “Run from the controlling psycho while you still can”.
I didn’t care for Lincoln at all.  He was pushy and did not come across as a Dom, just a controlling guy who wanted his way.  There were no discussions of what Alexander was comfortable with or wanted.  Alexander was supposed to be a straight guy but there was no real discussion of that and he jumped from never having sex with a guy or being in a BDSM situation to full on scenes.  None of it seemed realistic to me.  If not unrealistic then at least very unsafe.  I didn’t feel that either character was well developed at all.  All they really do is have sex and it bothers me when authors just throw in a bunch of sex and expect that I will equate that with emotional development.
A lot of the book was poorly edited and it contained my biggest book pet peeve ever.  Guys referring to each other as “pussies” every time they have an emotion or feeling.  I can’t stand seeing my gender used as a slander (& in such a crude way).  If it had just happened once or twice I would have overlooked it but it happened almost 30x.  Also, despite having had previous satisfying relationships with women, Alexander decides he’s “gay” for Lincoln. I’m not fond of bisexuality being dismissed and overlooked as a plot device.
Honestly I would have do not finished this book had I have not been reading it for a review.  I didn’t not care for the characters and I found the plot very unrealistic.  The writing style did not appeal to me and I had personal issues with a few things as mentioned.  This book unfortunately was not a win for me.
Cover:  I love the cover.  I think it’s fantastic and it’s what drew me to the book in the first place.

SERIES: Sirius Wolves #7

AUTHOR: Victoria Sue

PUBLISHER: Dark Hollow Press

COVER ARTIST: Dark Hollow Press

LENGTH: 50,000 words

RELEASE DATE: October 18, 2016

BLURB: “Win the love of the wolf with the hardest heart.”

Faced with eternal banishment to hell, Anubis, god of the underworld, has found a loophole in one of the oldest laws which will allow him to unleash his evil on an unsuspecting human world. Orion’s only hope to stop him is to accept his challenge: send a champion to win the love of the wolf with the hardest heart. It will take someone with a pure heart to soften a closed one, so faced with the threat of losing not only the werewolves, but the destruction of the human race, the gods can only do one thing — send Adam, one of their own.

Adam quickly realizes that the werewolf whose love he must win is Jed.  Wounded after the loss of his wife and son, Jed promised he would never love again or be responsible for someone else’s happiness. Adam has been given a near impossible task.

Anubis is eager to see Adam fail, and unbeknown to everyone takes matters into his own hands to make sure of it. Everything happening now is part of his master plan, and finally it has come full circle.

Even if Adam succeeds and wins Jed’s heart, will that love survive when Jed discovers the whole thing was nothing more than a bet? Or when Adam does the one thing he mustn’t and falls in love himself, will he not only break Jed’s heart but completely destroy his own?
Excerpt

Jed gentled his hand as Adam mewled in the back of his throat, both of Adam’s hands surrounding his neck and pressing tightly with an overwhelming urge to simply hang on.

They shared kisses. Shared air. Jed swallowed every reaction from Adam because it was precious. Finally, he wiped his hand and their bodies clean on the sheet and drew Adam in closer.

His heart beat loudly in his ears. Jed didn’t want to think about what they had just done, and let reality intrude on the bliss that seemed to wrap them both up. It wasn’t the whole fucking a guy thing, even though he was still in shock about that. It was the need inside of him, the nameless urge that transcended sex or narrow bigoted views of what made other people happy. In a lot of ways, it wasn’t even the fact that Adam was human and Jed was not.

It was his unshaking doubt that as soon as Jed trusted, as soon as Jed let in a little belief, as soon as Jed started thinking in terms of forever… That’s when it would happen. That’s when his forever would be ripped away. It had with his family. The day his father hadn’t returned from the hunt because of a human’s bullet. The day they’d fled their home because the forest was cleared to make a human town, and his family had no idea how to live in one. The day he was out scrounging for food to fill their empty bellies because it was winter and they should have been warm and safe in their homes, and his little sister had been attacked by a rogue. The rogue had been insane, half-mad with whatever injustice had caused him to attack a pup, and his mom had died trying to defend her.

And then he had trusted once more. Raye had waltzed into his life and danced his objections away. Then it had happened again, as surely as Jed feared it would.

He clutched Adam tighter, knowing his hold wouldn’t last, knowing Adam would be ripped from him like everyone else…

He no longer had any dreams that could be taken from him. He’d accepted long ago that the pack would be his life, but he would go home alone every day. He almost didn’t mind because he knew it wasn’t a matter if Adam would realize he was a pathetic old man and would leave.

It was simply a matter of when.

A Paul B Release Day Review: Full Circle (Sirius Wolves #7) by Victoria Sue

Standard

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

full-circle-by-victoria-sueAnubis has been called before the council of the gods.  Orion, current leader of the gods, and four senior gods are to pronounce punishment on Anubis for interfering with humans and werewolves.  His punishment will be permanent banishment.  The gods are surprised when Anubis readily agrees to his punishment—until he said that if he is to be banished, so should Sirius, Orion’s wife.  He points out that Sirius gave the human Marcus a wolf when he was injured, even though the werewolf voluntarily gave up his wolf.  He proposes a wager.  Sirius appoints a champion who must win the heart of the werewolf with the hardest heart.  If the champion succeeds, the Anubis will leave the earth alone.  If he fails, the Anubis will cause the destruction of all werewolves, hybrids included, and the champion must serve as his mate for all eternity in hell.  And the champion must accomplish his mission in two weeks.  The gods accept the challenge.

Sirius knows just who her champion will be.  Her son Horus, the only child born of two gods, will go to earth as a human named Adam, named after the mythical first man.  Adam arrives just in time for selection of human gammas that will help guard the Jefferson pack lands.  When he arrives, he meets Jed, pack beta and leader of security.  Adam passes the physical tests easily due to his godly powers.  When another recruit tricks Adam and causes his removal from the program, he wonders if he failed in his mission on his first day.  When Jed finds Adam after learning the truth, Adam has come down with a bad cold after walking in the rain most of the day.  Jed nurses him back to health but a week has passed.  Can Adam win over Jed before time runs out on both him and the werewolves?

This seventh book in the Sirius Wolves series is another winner.  This time the gods are more directly involved in matters as the premise of Anubis’ bet drives the action.  I liked how Adam tries to make himself as human as possible but knows little to nothing about what it means to be human in terms of day to day living.  He does not feed himself the first day and his dietary habits cause some shock among the werewolves.  The Colby pack is back and again causing problems for Blaze and the group.  And if you think Anubis will fight fair, you can think again.  If the series has indeed come full circle like the title suggest, this would be a good book to end it on.

The cover’s theme is the same as the previous books in this series.  A young shirtless man stands in front of a starry night sky.  I believe that is Jed that is supposed to be portrayed here.  Again, the cover art was done by E Connors.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

the-dilemma-by-victoria-sueMarcus Flint has recently been named Alpha of one of the largest werewolf packs.  How long will they allow a crippled human to lead them, let alone keep his three werewolf mates?

Three weeks have passed since the Claiming Ceremony gone wrong.  Hunter is in prison below the Supreme Alphas’ pack house.  Nate is still clinging to his mates and having problems dealing with his wolf.  Kellan feels that he is odd man out in the mating and isn’t feeling well, which is unusual for a werewolf.  Marcus still cannot believe that the Jefferson pack picked a disabled human to lead them.  However, he must attend to the needs of his mates before he can really focus on the pack.

The pack however is growing restless as their Alpha has basically not been seen in three weeks.  While he attends meetings with the pack leadership and the Supreme Alphas, he has not left the pack house.  When he finally starts to delve into pack business, he sees what terrible shape the pack has been in the last few years.  And with the pack growing as they are closest to Orion’s Circle, the problems are just going to increase.

When the pack doctor notices the pain the Marcus is in, he suggest that he apply to a program that a friend of his knows about.  It would involve robotic prostheses that would allow Marcus to run with the pack during the full moon.  When he visits Dr. Seth about the program, he learns that he must spend six months in Germany for the procedure as it is not yet approved in America.  Can he afford to leave his pack and more importantly his mates for such a long time in order to be a more effective leader and lover for them?

This fifth novel in the Sirius Wolves series brings us another step closer to the upcoming war between the gods that has been foreshadowed.  Anubis finally makes his presence known, which unsettles Blaze, the Supreme Alpha.  Marcus is still wallowing in self doubt wondering if he is really meant to lead 2300 werewolves and growing.  Ricoh is dealing with Hunter’s betrayal and his feelings of guilt about Nate.  Nate is slowly recovering but still relies on Marcus and Kellan for the most part for strength.  Young hybrid Chris, whose white wolf is unheard of, seems to be the key to the reason why this battle is coming.  The book has a few surprises which I will let you discover for yourself.  As usual, I am looking forward to the next book.

The cover art by E Connors is typical for the series.  It has a shirtless well build man in front of a starry night background.  Again, I wish I could figure out which character it is suppose to be.

Alexander

I lay there, or at least I think I’m lying down on some sort of soft surface. Soft and cozy. Smells nice. Yeah, it feels like a mattress, but it also feels like I’m floating on a fluffy cloud. I can hear things, some soft music playing, but it sounds like everything is so far away. I’m toasty warm. Even in my sluggish mind I know I’ve never felt this relaxed in my entire life. I can’t explain it – other than I never want the feeling to go away.

I should probably open my eyes and try to at least wake up, but it feels so damned good that I keep them clenched tightly together. There’s a nagging twitch in the back of my mind, telling me something isn’t quite right and I should be concerned, very concerned, but I don’t want to listen. I try to shut out my mind and focus only on what my body is saying.

I want to relax and enjoy whatever the hell this is. I don’t use drugs, but I’m pretty sure I’m going to start if this is the result of pill popping. Did I drink too much? Nope; if I had, I’d be feeling more like a rattlesnake being poked instead of a cuddly slug cocooned someplace…that smelled so damned nice. What the hell was that scent? I liked it. I’m pretty sure if I was able, it would turn me on. For the first time in my life, I feel like I might not have the energy to even get it up…and it feels so good that I don’t even care.

What had I been doing? Where was I? What had happened and how could I make it happen again?

“Alexander.” A husky voice invaded my state of peace and relaxation.

I peeked an eye open and immediately wished I hadn’t. Fuck. Fuck. Double fuck. What the double fuck? I tried to scramble away from the man looming over me but my limbs felt like fucking jelly that had been left out in the sun. My arms wouldn’t work. My fucking legs wouldn’t work. The only thing that was fucking working was the voice inside my head screaming for me to run for my fucking life. Well, shit. I’m naked. Yep, naked and apparently I’m in another man’s bed. I don’t belong in the beds of other men. Nope, not me. Especially not the bed of Lincoln Montgomery, spanker of bare asses.

“Calm down, Alexander,” Lincoln said in that deep, sexier than sexy voice. “You’re going to feel weak after our scene. It’s natural so don’t be alarmed. Don’t move,” he ordered as he turned away to reach for something. Before I could even consider trying to at least slide across the bed and belly crawl for the window so I could jump to my death, he was back around and offering me a bottle of water. No way was I drinking that shit. I’m sure it’s drugged; just like whatever I drank last night had to have been drugged. That’s why I was feeling so weak. And fucking wonderful.

Oh, shit. The scene! I had actually let another man spank me with a crop. In front of a crowd. Practically naked. I’m pretty sure I begged for it. I eyed the window again, calculating if I could make it before Lincoln grabbed me and hauled me back to his bed. Sure, I’d die naked and humiliate my parents and grandparents, but that would have to be their fucking problem. For the first time in my life, they would just have to deal with me breaking the rules. Technically, I suppose, I wasn’t breaking them. Mother just always said to have clean underwear on in case you are in an accident. I suppose in her mind no underwear would surely beat dirty underwear.

“Stop acting like a child, Alexander. We’re on the tenth floor. You would splatter,” Lincoln scolded. “Now drink your water. After an especially intense scene, you need plenty of rest and fluids. You’ve gotten the rest, so let’s drink our water, shall we?”

Apparently he could read my mind. Perfect.

“I don’t want your water, Lincoln. You’re probably just trying to drug me again,” I spat. Hell, I knew he hadn’t drugged me, but it sounded a hell of a lot better than I was stone-cold sober when I stripped in front of strangers and let a grown-ass man spank me. Oh wait, I’m also naked in his comfy bed. We probably fucked, too.

It gets better and better.

I wiggle a bit to see if I’m sore in places I shouldn’t be sore. Yep, I sure the fuck am. Of course that could very well be from the spanking I received, but, then again, it could be from something much worse. Shit, did I let this man fuck me? Double shit, why does the thought of that not piss me off like it should?

“Are you implying I’ve drugged you, Alexander?” Lincoln asked as he opened the bottle of water. I opened my mouth to tell him I damned straight thought he drugged me, but before I could get it out, he had scooped up my head and forced the bottle against my lips. “Drink,” he ordered.

So I drank it.

“Very good,” he praised and I glowed like a fucking moron. Why the hell would I care if he was happy or not? I should be feeling the opposite. Actually, I should probably punch him the face – if only my damned arms didn’t feel like a ton of lead. Since an angry glare was the only weapon I possessed at the moment, I glared. And glared. And glared.

He laughed – the motherfucker.

“You’ve got a pretty pout, Alexander. I’m sure you use it to get your way on most occasions, but it won’t work with me so put it away. Don’t waste your time and mine.”

His voice sounded like a growl. A very sexy, very arousing growl. Something inside of me wanted to purr. I settled for, “Fuck off, Lincoln.”

“Do you remember what happened earlier?” He pulled a chair right up against the bed and leaned closer to me than I felt comfortable with. No, scratch that. He leaned closer than I wanted to feel comfortable with. As it turns out, what I think I want and what my body wants might be two different things, as in on opposite ends of the chart. My head is screaming “no” but my body is dying to get closer to him. As my nostrils flare, I realize the scent that has been driving me crazy with lust is none other than Lincoln Montgomery. Could it get any worse?
“I’m straight,” I blurted out, trying to convince myself more than Lincoln. “Not gay.” Yeah, clarify it like he didn’t have a clue what straight meant. I’m a fucking idiot.

He smiled. It was one of those indulgent smiles that parents give children when they say or do something ridiculous. “Yes, thank you for telling me, Alexander. Again.”

Oh yeah, I had already told him that. Shit.

“Don’t worry. Straight men end up on the other end of my crop and then naked in my bed all the time.” Another indulgent smile. “It happens alllll the time.” He mocked.

“Did we?” I asked. I had to know. Shit, I didn’t want to know.

“Did we what?” Lincoln asked with a smirk. He knew damned well what I wanted to know. “Did we fuck?” I hissed, furious he made me say it and even more furious at the blush creeping across my body.

Lincoln remained perfectly quiet and I knew the delay was only meant to make me suffer as long as humanly possible. His eyes, a deep midnight blue, twinkled with merriment at my expense. I wasn’t sure of a hell of a lot of things at the moment, but I was one hundred percent certain that if Lincoln had fucked me, I enjoyed it. There was an aura of arrogance that he wore like a second skin – not the stupid kind of arrogance, but the kind that one got from being told how incredibly awesome they were. At fucking. He was probably awesome at fucking.

Finally, he said, “Trust me, Alexander; you would know it if I’d fucked you.” He leaned closer to me. “Every inch of you, inside and out, would know you’d been properly fucked.” His hot breath tickled my cheek as he spoke the words…the words that tickled me somewhere else. Fuck. How horrifying would it be if my cock got hard right about now? Pretty fucking horrifying.

“Plus, you’re straight, remember?”
