Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Most Memorable Series and Books of 2024

Making Best of Lists has always been problematic for me, especially when it comes to books and series.  That’s such a broad range of categories, tropes, themes, and spectrums of characters to whittle it down to a favorable few for such a long time period.

There’s so much I love about many genres and read so different tropes and authors, so many characters and stories that to reflect and refine them down to those that I have taken to heart during this year is close to impossible.

I always forget about the ones early on in the year or even smaller series that had a couple of books to them instead of an ongoing collection.  And this year I’m adding some books I have found so beautiful and memorable but not necessarily that fall under the LGBT umbrella. I’m including them in my year in lists here because they are now forever comfort reads or books that will remain near my bedside for re-reading.

Among them is the magnificently written novel, The Women by Kristin Hannah, along with a fantastic dragonrider series that has some LGBT characters but not the main characters. That’s The Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros.  And a book that I read and then immediately read again, as it resonates with me so. That’s the incredible Whiskey and Warfare: The Team Huntress Flights by E. M. Hamill.

Then there are series that had finale stories and series that have just begun.  With the exception of the multiple authors series, all series listed here are ones whose books should be read in the order they were written. No matter was some descriptions said. Just no.

These aren’t in any kind of order btw when listed under certain categories. Chaos is my name here.   Enjoy and let me know what books and series you recommend.

There were several books I wanted to include here from the beginning of the year but when I went to check out the links I found that they weren’t available, anywhere.  Even the small press that had published them was no longer in business.  And these were remarkable first books for the authors. I’d lost track because I read so many.

It’s a hard reminder of how hard it is for these incredible authors to keep writing and keep publishing stories that we love to read and hold dear.  And every book and author’s voice lost is a lessening of the rich narrative fabric that they bring to us daily.  One that lets us escape or become more thoughtful and aware or just more.

I’m so thankful for the authors and books I’ve read this year. Those listed and those who are not but still held dear.  You have made and continue to make a difference in my life.  You are treasured.

Happy New Year and Happy Reading from Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Review:  Demon-In-Law (Gods of Chaos, #2) by Aja Foxx

Rating: 3.25🌈

It seems that every time Foxx writes a short story for an anthology, this series gets another book.  The first one, How To Summon A Boyfriend, was written for the Fate’s Call Anthology – Manlove Edition. Now it’s Demon-In-Law, originally part of the Uncontrolled Chaos Anthology. It should be noted that both were revised, extended, and then relaunched for publication in their current forms.

I just hope that it doesn’t take another anthology to get a third story because there’s characters and plot lines a plenty that need additional exploration here. The mystery behind the overall arc themes is still left hanging pretty much at the end of the story.

These are short demon/human almost instantaneous mate connections that occur during a dramatic storyline that will have an ongoing arc thread and ties to a main character.

And while there’s serious topics involved, there’s no on page subject scene or raw material that would be considered extremely triggering.

It’s sweet, sexy stuff and happy endings that just so happen to be in the underworld.

The main character here, Abigor, was a gatekeeper to the underworld of the first book.  Now promoted by Hades to bodyguard to Herby, Abigor’s story revolves around Jamie and his sister.

It’s a rescue, with a serious topic but while sweet,  a lot of the story has dropped plot lines and issues that remain unresolved at the end of the book.

A reader is left wondering if there was a second half or more chapters that were left unfinished. Or if it’s all coming in another book.

Demon-In-Law (Gods of Chaos, #2) by Aja Foxx was a cute, quick read but wasn’t as well developed as the first.

Still entertaining and I hope Foxx returns to the series with a more balanced story soon.

As the personal bodyguard to the consort of Hades, god of the dead and king of the underworld, I very rarely got any time off. When Hades himself gives me the day off, I had some great ideas of how to spend my free time. Only, they didn’t go according to plan. Instead, I was summoned by a human wanting to make a deal for his soul. I had a better idea.

Warning: Gay erotic romance. The material in this book contains explicit sexual content that is intended for mature audiences only. All characters involved are adults capable of consent, are over the age of eighteen, and are willing participants.

Note: This story was originally part of the Uncontrolled Chaos Anthology. It has been revised and extended by 12,000 words.

Review: Cheap Heat (Goliaths of Wrestling book 3) by Lily Mayne

Rating:4.5🌈

Cheap Heat continues Lily Mayne’s unique paranormal romance series set in an otherworldly underground wrestling world, Goliaths of Wrestling.

It’s a real departure from the author’s other dark fiction. Those still has a romantic theme, but are often raw, futuristic, and dystopian.  Here, we get a bit of paranormal romcom, wild otherworldly sexual imagery and practices (especially in this case), and a company of found family wrestlers that’s evolving alongside each other’s romantic journeys.

Cheap Heat is notable in that’s its couple is markedly different from the other two relationships Mayne has created for this series.  In the previous books, the types of beings involved with each other were, probably, recognizable to the reader.  Human, werewolf, Fae, and a type of paranormal, a Empyn, that reads as a  type of succubus, even as each had a great, layered personality and background.  That vague sense of connection extends to most (although not all) the rest of the Goliaths.  Some truly bizarre and unique beings are part of this wrestling world.

Rafe Hare, a ghoul, is the new IT guy hired to bring the company and the Goliaths online and streaming worldwide.  He’s a prickly, socially awkward introvert, who has no idea of the world he’s about to enter.

Dan Ewen is one of the most popular of the wrestlers at the Goliaths of Wrestling.  What specifically makes Dan so popular also makes him unique.  He’s a dullahan.  His head comes off, and his body operates separately from his head. A wildly different situation no matter how you slice it. Or view it.

These two are “opposite attracts” in every sense. And while the other books were downright giggle fests as well as wonderful love stories, this has a different, albeit well written, feel to it.  The characters have been through some very different obstacles, including their own struggles towards understanding each other , and their reliance on their assumptions about each other has to be addressed as well.

All of which is done while some pretty imaginative sex is occurring, alone and together. And with a pumpkin. Ok, that last is snort funny.

I absolutely enjoyed Cheap Heat, loved the journey Rafe and Dan had to take to arrive at their own HEA.  Rafe’s friends are amazing and I hope they figure into future books.

What a fantastic series and story. The author has such an incredible voice and imagination that I never know what will happen or which way a narrative will go.

Read the warnings. Sexy, kinky, otherworldly, hilariously spew worthy, and a definite recommendation.

Rafe

I really, really don’t like my neighbour.

We’ve lived next door to each other for three years, and we couldn’t be more opposite. I’m a quiet, introverted ghoul with a small friend group and a love of true crime podcasts and tabletop role-playing games. Dan Ewen a party boy with an endless string of ‘guests’ who likes to blare country music all night. He’s loud, inconsiderate, messy, loud, a total dudebro… did I mention loud?

And when I start my new job as IT manager at Goliaths of Wrestling, an underground supernatural wrestling organisation, I quickly discover that my terrible dullahan neighbour is now my new colleague. Great.

I still don’t like him. It doesn’t change anything. I can avoid him at work. But when I spot him one night through his living room window doing something that is utterly shocking, obscene, really weird… I find myself thinking about my annoying neighbour. A lot.

All the time, actually.

Oh no.

Dan

That neighbour of mine is a cute, surly ghoul whose pretty green eyes and angry scowl just make me want to rile him up even more.

We’ve never really been buddies, despite living side by side for three years. But when he starts working at Goliaths as our IT manager, helping to bring us into a new digital age, our lives begin to become a bit more entangled.

Mainly because he starts watching me each night while I… relax. So I make sure to give him a good show through my living room window.

I’ve always assumed Rafe Hare is straight, but it quickly becomes clear that I might be wrong. And when I propose a fantastic new way for us to get… ahem… friendlier, he’s as all-in as I am.

Which means I get to show him just how weird it can get with a dullahan. And I can’t wait.

Join us for the Tour for “Glitches of Gods“ by Jurgen “Jojo” Appelo (excerpt and giveaway, a OWL tour)

Glitches of Gods - Jurgen

Jurgen “Jojo” Appelo has a new queer sci-fi book out (pan, non-binary, gender fluid, trans FTM), Playspheres book one: Glitches of Gods. And there’s a giveaway!

Julien, the AI genius, craves freedom, but the gods wield total control. In this ominous world, will his android bring hope and salvation or yet more death and destruction?

Julien feels utterly miserable. Creator of the AI that killed his father, the brilliant engineer deftly evades work on the world’s first human-level android, dodging the off-chance of snuffing out more lives. Instead, Julien much prefers bickering with his virtual assistant, crafting memes with his quirky friends, and shagging dates across a broad spectrum of genders. Yet, due to a maddening jump across timelines, he grudgingly faces his greatest dreads: raising a family and leading his team to win the AI race.

Drowning in new duties, Julien aims to avoid a second AI disaster. But when a mysterious, technological infection wreaks havoc on the city, Julien flip-flops between shielding his loved ones and leading his team as he battles it out with broken machines, idiot protestors, and a rather sinister cat. Learning he got himself involved in a war between gods, should Julien save his new family or finish his team’s android to prevent an AI apocalypse?

Glitches of Gods is the extraordinary first book in the Playspheres epic science fantasy series. If you like cynical sentients, wacky worlds, and plenteous profanity, then you’ll love the kick-off of Jurgen Appelo’s bewildering saga.

Excerpt

Glitches of Gods meme

The city park brimmed with people crawling under a mantle of sun in the late afternoon. Carrying his jacket over his shoulder, Julien strolled off the little red Japanese bridge on his customary route while people on skates, blades, hoverboards, floorbots, and wheelers passed him by on all sides. The crisp scent of freshly cut grass tickled his nose, while above, several flyers soared over the treetops, presumably on their way to the bustling park lake beyond.Julien’s univice attempted to draw his attention. Dozens of messages awaited his consideration, but he took pleasure in ignoring the world for a bit longer. After his escape from the incessant nagging of his colleagues, there was no reason to let anyone else distract him.

“There are one hundred and twenty-three messages—”

“Shut up, Orec—”

An anguished shout startled him. Julien barely had time to sidestep an older woman who speed-walked past at a pace that didn’t seem entirely natural. He watched as she yelled and gestured at other people before vanishing among the trees, leaving a trail of agitated pedestrians in her wake. Half-expecting a sonic boom to follow, Julien wondered if the lady’s impressive pace was entirely voluntary. A malfunctioning bodymod, perhaps? But then, a hideous sticker on a nearby lamppost drew his attention.

Reject suppression.
Reject secrecy.
Reject slavery.
Reject AIs.
#Wetwares

Gods, did Burt put this here? The Wetwares movement online was annoyingly outspoken about the dangers of AI, but this was Julien’s first encounter with an actual physical sticker—and an appalling one, too. It looked like it was designed in a traffic accident. I’ll ask Burt about it tomorrow.

“Orec, is there something to eat at home?”

“The available food items in the kitchen do not sufficiently meet the recommended minimum when considering standard dietary intake.” Julien let that pass for a moment, and then Orec added, “You’ll be hungry and grumpy.”

“I’ll grab something nearby, then.” Julien knew a food stall at the edge of the park. “Any dating prospects for tonight, Orec?”

“You have twelve invites; seven of them identify as women, three as men, two as genderqueer, one transgender, one bi-gender, one pangender, one agender, one novigender, and one intergender.”

Julien’s mind performed some calculus. “That makes eighteen, not twelve.”

“The person identifying as pangender also identifies as agender and genderqueer.”

“What about the other genderqueer?”

“They identify as man, woman, and intergender.”

“That would be trigender, then.”

“They may not identify as three genders when they also identify as genderqueer.”

“What about the bi-gender person? Are they the same as the transgender?”

“No, the bi-gender person identifies as a woman and novigender.”

“By the gods. And the transgender?”

“They identify solely as a woman.”

“Well, I’m glad one of them keeps it simple.”

“What preference are you leaning toward tonight?”

“Who cares about gender? Just give me tits. I’m in the mood for tits today—any gender. Gods, if I were straight, I’d save hours on the matching rituals.”

“I count another ‘fallacy of oversimplification.’”

“Nobody cares, Orec. Nobody cares.”

Julien wound his way between the trees and walked around the lake. The flyers he’d spotted earlier were now boarding passengers while children swam, splashed, and laughed in the water. Nearby, a standard Class 3 robot, looking like the outcome of a stirring union between C-3PO and a Cyberman, stood with its feet just shy of the lake’s edge, holding a pile of towels. Poor guy—or girl. One day, you will drop everything and dive right in with the others. You may even desire a swimsuit.

Ten minutes later, Julien was in a heated exchange involving his Turkish pizza. “So, credit cards don’t work; debit doesn’t work; Gitcoin doesn’t work; Kurrenzee doesn’t work; Swipe doesn’t work; Europay doesn’t work, and XDollar doesn’t work.” He cocked his head. “Where’d you get your payment systems? At a garage sale in Pyongyang?”

The woman—assuming she identified as such—offered an apologetic shrug. Exasperated, Julien rummaged through his pockets and slammed a few coins on the counter. Thank the gods for cash. He snatched the food and, making a show of his boundless frustration, walked off without saying another word. The entire universe is conspiring against me.

With some effort, he spotted a cast-iron park bench that wasn’t occupied, hurried over to claim it, and settled down. He laid his jacket beside him and grumbled under his breath as he unwrapped his meal.

“Gods, Orec. It’s 2054, and we still need cash.” He savored a bite of the rolled-up pizza, the flavors of spiced meat, cheese, garlic, and hot sauce tingling in his mouth. After swallowing, he continued, “I’m telling you, fifty years from now, we’ll have a hundred different ways of not being able to pay. And we’ll be surrounded by these ‘Wetwares’ zealots convinced that super-intelligent AIs use these technical problems to drive us all nuts and enjoy a good laugh.”

Orec remained silent.

Oh, here we go again. “What’s bothering you, Orec?”

“I detect no problems with my performance or functionalities.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Orec resumed his silence.

Julien sighed. “I know you, Orec. I helped to create you. You don’t like it when I complain about the sad state of AIs; you don’t like my work on Tweeki, and you don’t like the possibility of Tweeki surpassing you.” He paused for a moment. “Plus, Tweeki has a body.”

“I wish you hadn’t decommissioned me,” said Orec.

“I wish you hadn’t killed people,” answered Julien.

There was no time to wait for a response. A piercing screech from overhead assaulted Julien’s ears, and mere moments later, less than a stone’s throw away from where he sat, the grass erupted, and a shock wave rattled the trees when a flyer crash-landed into the ground.

Review:  Demon Hunter (The Collective Book 2) by Louisa Masters

Rating: 3🌈

Demon Hunter and this series so far has been a semi-winner for me.  The characters that have been carried over from Ghostly Guardians have been a mixed bag as some have shown little development in character, while others have shown significant growth through their respective relationships and roles in the series and arc storylines.

That continues here with main characters still showing antagonism towards higher demons like Marc, a fascinating higher being who’s has been and continues to be portrayed as being supportive of them and their family.  Marc is not only the reason why this group has successfully taken down their collective enemies but also as a bonded mate to one of their own. But despite this, since the finale, the hostile behavior of several members has not changed towards him, despite the events and ongoing conflicts within the Collective.

It makes little sense for the group and serves to reinforce a certain stagnation of their personalities.

Matt and Dylan are in a relationship, one that they are hiding from their friends and family members.  The reasons for, given the situation and circumstances of this group and the Collective will seem not particularly well thought out. Masters has a traumatic event occurring that impacts Matt, then Dylan and their group as an unseen threat to everyone is identified.

The aspect of this book that’s interesting and important for future stories is the thread about the threat/enemy uncovered and how it’s handled . Especially in what it represents in terms of loose ends and the challenges going forward.  I really like the other higher demon as well as my favorite couple of Marc and Ian.  They are heavily involved in this book and plot thread.

Less engaging for me is the issues I have with Matt and Dylan’s relationship dynamics.  The constant lack of communication between them, the avoidance of major confrontation with each other over intimate matters, and in general, their refusal to acknowledge issues that might impact their own lives as well as endanger others around them.

That would be one thing if the author utilized this aspect of their relationship with regard to the storyline and made it easier for them to understand and move forward, but instead it’s Marc who is the most influential factor here.  It sort of happens, but it takes the entire plot and that’s entirely too long for this reader.

Marc remaining the most epic and entertaining character of the series and group.  I look forward to seeing more of him, his relationship and dialogue. And more higher demons.

Blurb

What happens when the hunter becomes the hunted?

Before that night, there wasn’t much in my life I could complain about. I hunt rogue demons for a living, which is the coolest thing ever, and my brothers are the best. Sure, there was that thing with our parents betraying humanity, and okay, I wasn’t thrilled when my brother-bestie hooked up with a demon, but everything else was amazing.

Except that Dylan, the person I love more than anything, wanted to keep our relationship secret.

I got it; I really did. He’s lost all his family, and he was afraid if my family adopted him, he might lose them too. It’s not like we’ve got the world’s safest jobs. I was sure he’d change his mind eventually.

That decision was taken from him one awful night. Now, everyone knows, but Dylan’s more worried about the people trying to kill me. Unidentified and vicious; that’s all we know. Oh, and they hacked The Collective’s server.

How does a demon hunter fight a virtual threat? He doesn’t… that’s his kickass techie boyfriend’s job. Dylan will find these people, and then we’ll deal with them.

Even if there is more going on than we know about.

Review:  Best Laid Plans by E M Leya

Rating: 3🌈

I know this author by her wonderful paranormal Ghostly series so when I saw this story I picked it up.

Unfortunately it had lost the many elements that make the series so special and its characters so engaging.  Best Laid Plans is a contemporary romance that’s sweet and predictable.

Uncle gets custody of his niece by tragic circumstances. Finds out his sister never told the father of his niece about her. Contacts that man, who immediately loves the kid, huge family loves her, they fall into an instant rushed relationship, events happen, they move in together. The end. All so quickly that you blink and the timeline has them getting engaged.

While this isn’t unusual in contemporary romance, these characters have little depth and less chemistry.  We don’t get much history that adds to the plot or understanding of the sister.  So it doesn’t really encourage the reader to connect with the story or characters in an emotional way.

Except that as a dog lover, I found myself disagreeing with many aspects of the narrative that concerns the puppy and the dynamics of the family/character interactions.  Honestly, having a father threatening to put a puppy outside unless a two year old eats her vegetables? Just no.

If you’re a fan of this author or contemporary stories, there’s other books out there that I find I would recommend reading instead of this one.

Review: Impromptu Match (Goliaths of Wrestling book 1) by Lily Mayne

Rating:5🌈

I had no idea Lily Mayne could write romcom. Paranormal romcom! I picked up Impromptu Match, the first book in Mayne’s Goliaths of Wrestling paranormal romance series, based just on that fabulous cover illustration by Vic Gray/Bloodwrit. Didn’t even look at the author at all. I was captivated by the characters I saw beautifully captured by the artist.

But that story! Wow! While I got the book in ebook format, I’m going to buy it again to have it to read in print.  I love it. The universe, the characters, the writing, everything about this is amazing.

Where to start? Hard to pick a favorite element.  The characters, from the main couple of Taylor and Holt , to all the otherworldly wrestlers, and the easily recognizable corporate office staff are perfect.

Taylor Hough, sad human office worker bee , uniform of suits, dad jeans and old sneakers, 39, caught in the monotony of a job he never wanted, still doesn’t and doesn’t understand, has his world rocked with a wrong turn one night after work. Taylor is a great character. He’s easily identifiable, one we connect with, and as he changes, throwing off his old habits for new growth, exploring new ideas and concepts, we are cheering him on.  Especially in his relationship with Holt.

Holt is everything. I’ll let the reader enjoy his character and personality in this book. But chef’s kiss.

Talk relationship goals. These two are so well written, the chemistry, the communication, and great respect for each other, I love them. They’re sexy, they have endless potential, and they’re just so expansive in their approach to life and their love.

What else is top notch here? The dialogue and the author’s keen ear for the sheer awfulness of corporate jargon.  The absolute nonsense that gets tossed about as often as zoom meetings these days.  Synergy as

“The directors prefer there to be synergy across all our public-facing outputs to really leverage the HutSec brand, you know?”

Snort and giggling.  Also

“Let’s circle back to this in the morning. I’ll loop you two in when the team have our group-think first thing.”

Double Snort! More giggles

Honestly, this is so spot on and used so hilariously throughout the office conversations that I found myself laughing constantly.  That corporate culture, right down to a bland name HutSec, is narrative perfection.

When I’m not laughing at the dialogue, or swooning over the couple, or enjoying the action of the fantastic group of otherworldly wrestlers of the Goliaths Wrestling Club, I was just trying to see who was the best otherworldly character to see a romantic story next.  So many to choose from.

And the sheer comedy scenes here are incredible. These are a very hot, frisky couple, the chemistry is off the charts! Stock up on the fans!

Love this! Highly recommended!

And I’ll repeat it again, that cover is incredible..

Impromptu Match (Goliaths of Wrestling Book 1)

Blurb

I, Taylor Hough, am a painfully average guy.

I have the soul-destroying corporate job, I iron my underpants, and I was unceremoniously dumped for an influencer hippie a few years ago. Every day feels the same, and I don’t know how much longer I can cope before I do something unhinged like rip off my shirt in the middle of my co-worker’s office birthday party and smear lemon cake all over my chest.

But then a case of mistaken identity suddenly lands me in the middle of a covert professional wrestling league, which is apparently being run in the basement of my office building. Weird. Even weirder are the wrestlers. They seem… otherworldly. So does the rest of the staff. And the audience. Pretty much everyone except boring old me.

And then there’s the owner, Holt Hector, with whom I have an extremely embarrassing first encounter. He’s ridiculously attractive, even in the inhuman cosplay get-up he’s wearing that only makes him hotter, if I’m being totally honest.

Then I discover it’s not a costume. And that the show put on by Goliaths of Wrestling every night is more monstrous reality than mindblowing special effects.

My previously boring life is suddenly no longer quite so average, and hot-as-hell Holt is inexplicably as interested in me, and my ironed underpants, as I am in him and his strange new world.

Review:  Fae for Pay (Fortune Favors the Fae novel) by Meghan Maslow

Rating:  3.5🌈

Fae for Pay is the new fantasy novel by Meghan Maslow for the multi-author series, Fortune Favors the Fae, with a magical traveling two sided Fae gold coin as a connecting point.

An immediate plus goes to Maslow’s use of the fae magical coin in the storyline. It was imaginative, interesting, and a large enough of a element in the plot to make it narratively visible throughout the story.

I enjoyed all the engaging characters who have the potential for more than just one book. They were fun to get to know and enjoy along the journey. However the universe building has need of considerably more foundation information. It’s spotty at best.

We’re given to understand it’s a world that encompasses humans, vampires and werewolves but not other paranormals.  Why no other species isn’t said. Not much more information is laid out about magic or paranormal phenomena other than that which is puzzling. Nor do we have any background history on if this has always been true or a historical event.

Teremie Summersis a human whose life has been changed for the worse by his ex. Known falsely as Teremie the cheater because of actions by his ex, he’s survived by streaming as an elf on his Only Fae channel and rooming with his best friend, actor Rory.

When Sheila Levy, their agent informs Rory of a actors call for a movie that’s from Rory’s childhood best book, The Elves Cursed Coin/The Prince’s Cursed Coin, it’s both of them who end up answering the call.

The story begins there, following them to the remote set location, and all the weird shenanigans that occur throughout the filming process.  The story continues with the filming as relationships form between Teremie and Kade, and between other friends in the cast.

That would be Rory McMahon, friend from childhood and Alistair the vampire, also an actor.

Kade Savage, actor, wolf shifter, fated mate, is a very interesting character with a neat twist that comes into play further in the storyline.  But Maslow does with this terrific element as with others here, it doesn’t get developed fully into the highly complex aspect of this thread that it could. Which is the main issue I found here.

Maslow has many great elements and neat ideas thrown in here that while some pop up consistently throughout the story (woodland animals on Teremie and Rory’s porch on the set, the wicked crows, pixies, etc), these details aren’t explored or tied into a specific story elements in a clearly defined way.  So much of the story is written like this that eventually the reader just doesn’t look for any explanations or reasonable tie in to a storyline.

The dramatic reveal is strange because the reader is unfamiliar with the story of the book the plot of the movie is based upon. Had the author included more details, it would have given clarity and depth to the story and characters actions. It would have helped give foundation too a narrative that’s often not making sense. It’s fun and the characters are charming in their own way. But pulled together it’s just not.

Fae for Pay has so many great characters and good ideas. But a cohesive story and foundation is lost somewhere.  It’s still a lot of fun and has the potential to spin off another romance for two characters in need of HEA.

Fun for lovers of the author and the series.

        Fae for Pay

Blurb

A hot AF wolf who could make me howl all night long. A persistent gold coin with dubious intentions. And a magical whammy no one saw coming.

Hello, gentle reader (or online stalker). My name is Teremie—yes, it’s a T, not a J, thanks for asking—Summers. Maybe you’ve seen me on Only Fae. I play the sexpot elf of your dreams.

Through a bizarre turn of events, I end up cast as an elf in an upcoming epic fantasy film—even though my acting skills are mainly of the “fae for pay” online variety.

My co-star is the once-cute-teen-star, turned smokin’ hot, all grown up, wolf-shifter Kade Savage. He’s gentle, honorable, and he doesn’t care about my past mistakes.

All great, right? Well . . .there are a couple of teensy tiny roadblocks to my happily-ever-after. See, wolves don’t date non-wolves. It’s a thing. And, oh, yeah, he’s straight. Which is fine. I’m perfectly okay with it. My track record is so poor that I might as well be running backward. So, it’s a little crush. What’s the harm?

But before long I catch him giving me big-bad-wolf eyes when he thinks I’m not looking. His low, growly voice makes my heart beat a little faster and sends tingles down my spine and on a one-way trip to my nether regions. Just when the UST between us is about to erupt, we end up in a fantasy scene so real it would make Peter Jackson jealous. What in the Lord of the Rings alternate dimension is this?! We have to rely on each other—and a contrary magical coin—to show us that “home” isn’t a place so much as where the heart is.

Fae for Pay is a part of the multi-author series, Fortune Favors the Fae. From spicy to sweet, zany romps to epic adventures, there’s something for everyone in this mystical series. Discover destiny and true love, and follow the coin on its fickle journey to the next world and a new magical adventure.

Review: Jonathon, After All: Princes Take New York Book 1 by K. Sterling

Rating:  4.25🌈

From K Sterling’s forward:

“All the books in this series are meant to be modern adaptations of classic fairy tales with the primary focus on the king of all tropes: Prince Charming. He’s the king for me, at least. And if there is one thing that is consistent with Charming, it’s insta love. He believes in love at first sight and he is often blindly noble. Occasionally, to his and his true love’s detriment.”

Other classical elements of the Prince Charming fairy tale story are included.  A in-distress character who’s been wronged, knights, wicked stepmothers, etc, but all given a contemporary twist with the characters and storyline elements to make Jonathon, After All: Princes Take New York Book 1 a entertaining start to a new series.

The aspects of this story I absolutely loved were seeing the real relationship between Jonathon and his formidable aunt Muriel.  In the preceding series and stories, both Jonathon and his intimidating Aunt Muriel, and her apricot poodle, had by their own accounts here, given a very different,  oftentimes off putting impression.  But here we see and understand the truth of the matter.  That they love each other and Aunt Muriel has always been Jonathon’s most loyal supporter, even when she hasn’t understood his actions.

Sterling presents an older, mischievous, highly intelligent woman, one determined to make sure that her beloved nephew is taken care of and safe.  If you can’t tell, I’d be throughly thrilled with a novel about Muriel , Tilly (her devoted staff), and that poodle as the go invest things!

And add in Jonathon, who has a great, wounded backstory, but a loving history with Muriel and that building that they live in Manhattan, well, I’m totally invested in this family. It gets better when Jonathon meets and is “acquired” as part of the Nanny found family by Riley and Giles.  Again, another superb pairing and part of the story.  Beautiful work with in this narrative, and so great to see this family again.

Only the romance was a little less developed for me.  I think this has to do with how the flashbacks were worked into the present day storyline.  For me, the transitions weren’t particularly smooth between the decade they met and the time now when Leo is trying to figure out what happened and get Jonathon back.

It’s too jumbled and it takes away from the story as it’s happening now between them.  The best part is all about Jonathon. Then separately about Leo.  It’s not until later that any real new relationship can begin again. And reasonably, a decade and a lot of misdeeds have happened.

More development would have been nice for them both afterwards and a better cohesive format for the flashbacks to really make this relationship stronger than it comes across.  Especially with the kink and their background.

I’m looking forward to reading the new books in the series and hopefully Aunt Muriel pops up again to save the day in some way. What an amazing character and turnaround! I adore her so much!

A definite recommendation.

What do you say to the man who took your virginity, broke your heart, and ruined your life?

For ten years, Jonathon hid his pain, acting out in ridiculous ways in hopes that one day, his prince would rescue him. But when the day finally came, it was too little, too late after being pushed at and rejected by every eligible bachelor in Manhattan.

Leopold, the new Margrave of Hessen, was the gala’s guest of honor but he didn’t give a damn until he spotted the love of his life at the bar. After nearly a decade apart, Leo’s delight quickly turns into confusion when he’s doused by a cocktail and Jonathon flees the gala.

What happened, all those years ago in Austria? And what went wrong? Both men must confront the truth about their secret, month-long affair and break the spell that’s kept them apart. Is it too late for them to turn back the clock, or will Jonathon get his happily ever after, after all?

A spin-off of K. Sterling’s Nannies of New York series, Jonathan, After All is a contemporary fairytale romance about a young artist hiding a broken heart behind an influencer persona, and a valiant, misguided prince trying to save the world from climate change. There’s meddling family and staff, a metaphorical tower, a wicked aunt, and two lovers separated by an evil spell.
