This was a highly enjoyable story about real life Krampus, the twin brother of Nicholas, aka, Santa Claus. Krampus, aka Karl, wants to help Nick by ferreting out the kids who’ve been bad from those who’ve been good. After all, traditionally that’s his role, but the Council won’t allow it because Karl doesn’t have the true Christmas spirit. So Nick’s husband, Noel, uses the magic powers he was granted when he married Nick and places a spell around Krampus so that he looks human. He then plants him in the apartment building they own in San Diego and tells Krampus his true nature and appearance will revert on Krampusnacht, December 5th. He has close to three months to find his Christmas spirit so he can approach the board for a change in their decision.
His new neighbor is a cute, older guy who gives new meaning to the words Christmas spirit. Forty-three-year-old Lewis owns a little Christmas store in a nearby town where his family also runs a pumpkin and Christmas tree farm. Over the course of the fall holidays, readers are treated to the dynamic that develops between the seven-foot-plus tall Krampus and the five-foot-something Lewis. Their attraction simmers and eventually blossoms to love, but Karl’s true nature might just tear them apart for good once it’s revealed.
I enjoyed the story immensely. It was very creative and fun, and I also found it a learning experience as I got to meet Krampus and his legend for the first time.
The secondary characters were great as well, and I’m so happy that Lewis’s roomie, Jerry, also got to have his wish granted by Santa. An all-around treat, this one is definitely a put-a-smile-on-your-face holiday story.
