Review: Harbor (On the Wind Book 3) by Sam Burns and W.M. Fawkes

Harbor, the third in Sam Burns and W.M. Fawkes’ fabulous On the Wind fantasy series, is a redemption romance story for two men whose journey we’ve been following for several books.

On the Wind will be my most rec’d series by these authors because of the consistently excellent storytelling, the depth of the characters development, and the emotional journeys they undertake complex, moving, and relatable. And each new book has made me say “oh, now, this one is my favorite.”

Orestes, of the now dishonored and disbanded Eagle Clan, is a character that has been a staple of the series. A consistent character whose power hungry father destroyed their family and clan, Orestes has been a tragic figure, friend, and needed support for the main characters in the series. But he’s been a bit of an enigma as well. Here the authors give him the depth of character and history as well redemptive arc his Eagle deserves. I adore this giant thoughtful man who’s lost so much.

He’s paired with another so desperately in need of a redemption story himself. That’s Prince Tybalt, the sulky, beautiful heir to the throne of frigid Urial. His father, King Albany, a ruler is proving himself increasingly unpopular, contemptuous of others, including his son, and untrustworthy in his dealings. But over the past novels, Tybalt’s own actions and behaviors has made him a figure of contempt, someone’s who’s weak and unimportant, consumed by pretty things and his own personal interests.

But always Tybalt was seen through the perspective of others, his actions and personality reflective by their own history and court status, not that he didn’t earn his reputation. But here in Harbor, both men unexpectedly find that they didn’t know they could have, a new start, a twist in their life lives and love. All done through an amazing combination of outstanding character development, great story plotting, and a combination of magical powers and a grand romantic arc.

Tybalt turns into a real man, a person we can trust and love, worthy of the friendships he starts to build. And Orestes, the Eagle without a Clan, finds a new home, a people who he can fit in with, and a man to build a life together with and love.

I read this book twice.

Harbor (On the Wind Book 3) by Sam Burns and W.M. Fawkes is a fantastic story , one I didn’t want to end. I love the series and hope the authors continue with new books going forward. Especially because I want to see Mercutio get his HEA. Absolutely recommend!

This one may be my favorite one so far.

Review: A Highland Gargoyle’s Lucky Star (Tales from the Tarot story) by Chloe Archer

A Highland Gargoyle’s Lucky Star, while definitely in the Tales from the Tarot multi-author series, is firmly rooted in Chloe Archer’s Monster Hollow universe and her latest novel from that, The Gargoyle and the Romance Writer.

The main gargoyle characters here (and an unfortunate member under going punishment here), are met for the first time in that book. And in a delightful fashion, several characters get mentioned here too in terms of written passages from their own books or novels. It will make the reader seek out those novels to see what happens with them and their romantic adventures.

But there’s plenty to keep a reader entertained and invested in the shenanigans and adventures of one outgoing, positive human, Noah Price , and his gargoyle fated mate, Elryk DarkWing.

From the moment he connects with The Magic Shop and its mysterious Owner who, with the gift of a tarot reading, Noah gets a renewed happy energy and direction in his life that sees him flying off to Scotland and his fate.

Archer’s character of Noah is instantly likable. Positive and outgoing without being naive, able to take care of himself, he’s so easy to connect with. Easily that American abroad in Scotland or human amidst a bunch of otherworldly beings, he’s that person who can make it work either way.

This is a fated mate instant bonding relationship but it does work here because of Noah and Elryk. Archer has them in an isolated place and precarious situation, and then creates other characters we can equally enjoy and relate to as a support group for them.

As this is the first is a new sequel series set in Scotland, I can’t wait to see the others get their partners/fated mates too. Should be entertaining as this one.

If you’re a fan of Archer’s Monster Hollow series or the author, definitely grab this up. The characters are charming, the story entertaining, and the ending satisfying. I look forward to the next one in this series.

Review: Guardian (On the Wind Book 2) by Sam Burns and W.M. Fawkes

Guardian is not the book I expected it to be. Knowing that Hector was going to The Wall, with the Crane Clan, to defend the borders of Nemeda against the southerners in their never ending war, I expected non-stop battles, bloodshed, and angst.

Especially from Hector, a man who has lost everything and has arrived in a new land where he has no status, no martial skills. And the youngest, most gentle sibling he’s always protected, due to love and responsibility, is the one who has ended up rescuing not only himself but Hector and their sister (Sanctuary). He’s a very tragic, wounded figure in many ways.

But Burns and Fawkes delivers a great story and fantastic characters in a narrative that will go into a more intimate, emotionally powerful world, rather than a larger, action packed adventure.

Hector, in a story that sees himself redefining his thinking about his life and future, is paired with a man who, once the layered are revealed, is similar in his own mind and history. That’s Killian, war Chief of the Crane Clan, whose interesting internal family and child raising structure has produced a person who understands the burdens of responsibility that Hector has borne since adolescence.

Having Hector and Killian work together and struggle with their own issues as well as Hector’s need to redefine who he is as a man in a new world, needing new ideas and skills, is a brilliant way to bring them closer together and to make them relatable to the reader. Hector’s insights into why he’s so torn, unhappy, and confused are thoughts that anyone can understand. So too are those of Killian’s as he seeks to help Hector while still struggling to stay apart emotionally. It all makes sense and their relationship is one I couldn’t get enough of. The authors writing is so skilled in detailing their emotions and dynamics.

I was thrilled to see both siblings again in important roles and emotional moments together. That sister has found her home in Nemeda as the fierce consort to the Chief of the Raven Clan, is no surprise as we saw the women together at the end of the first novel. Men and women rule Clans in Nemeda, something that’s not true to the north and south, so I wonder if it will play into future plans.

The authors have created such a great background and culture for the Crane Clan (along with the many other clans) that it’s easy to get sidetracked imagining more than just the cultural tidbits that are being given out. There’s a wealth of riches here throughout the whole story and series, and it’s goes into making this a beautiful, compelling book.

The ending was as astonishing and satisfying as the storylines that led up to it. And it made me anticipate the next in this fabulous series even more.

Guardian (On the Wind Book 2) by Sam Burns and W.M. Fawkes is an excellent read as is the series. Absolutely recommend!

Review: Immortal Sentry by Eden Winters

While I’m a huge fan of this author, unfortunately Immortal Sentry doesn’t seem to have the same energy or narrative features as this author’s many other books.

The story of a lone survivor, Prince Eron, of his royal family’s betrayal and demise and subsequent struggles to regain the throne, are densely worded and dull “as told to” scenarios instead of being lively, vividly illustrated with memorable scenes, and emotional moments.

It was indeed a struggle to connect with the characters and storylines. The language and dialogue was stiff and uninteresting. It lacked emotional overtones and saps any semblance of life from the characters and storylines.

It’s a huge difference from the author’s other novels I adore and rec. Those have a highly satisfying narrative, vastly better dynamics between characters that are relevant and believable on paper. Everyone here is dry and one dimensional. The plot is well written, as it’s definitely had many characters and storylines woven together to create a wider story. But the couple and its main action sequences didn’t really work well. That’s my main issue.

I enjoyed Winters previous novels, contemporary or fantasy driven, but this turned out to be not my cup of coffee.

Review: Soar (Wings ‘N’ Wands Book 3) by AJ Sherwood, Jocelynn Drake

I’m not sure if Soar is the end of the Wings ‘N’ Wands series but it does read as if it is. With all the previous couples and all the dragon clans and mages being present here in one role or another , it’s got the essence of a finale story. Especially that epilogue and speech.

So that’s how I will treat it. I’ve enjoyed reading the three stories immensely, with Sam and Dimitri’s probably being my favorite (Ruins). So it’s fitting that Soar concludes with a return to Sam’s story by way of his twin brother, Salem, a pediatric surgeon in the US.

Salem’s in Brazil for a celebration for his brother, Sam and Dimitri, meets ice dragon Gregori, and after a fabulous one night stand, finds himself with a fated mate he doesn’t want.

There’s several aspects of the story I enjoyed and others I didn’t connect with as well. It starts with the main characters and storyline. If you consider Sam and Dimitri’s (my favorite) , the elements in Ruins are similar but Sam’s character is far more appealing. Sam’s magical core is broken but Salem’s isn’t. So while Sam and Dimitri’s relationship dynamic is reflective of the same snark and behavior that Salem and Gregori demonstrate to begin with, the issues they faced, the dangers and unknown terrain made their journey more complex, and their struggles more understandable in emotional terms.

However , while many of us could understand not wanting to overturn our lives, jobs etc, it’s Sam’s continued conflicting and often abrasive or self-centered towards Gregori that’s the issue. The authors made it an important part of his character, a factor that left me feeling less than invested in his life and journey. The authors may have wanted to separate his character from his twin but it felt as though they went as far as they could in the opposite direction, sympathetically speaking. He’s just not as relatable with his constant references to himself and his actions as being a “a-hole” or something in that sense. Not that he’s wrong as he’s written. The narrative makes vague mentions as to some bad relationships in his past but the authors give no evidence of any, nothing to suggest that outright nastiness that’s been ongoing.

Yes, no one wants to overturn their lives. So communication is key. Doesn’t happen. Gregori is given more depth and better communication skills. He’s seen expanding his social circle and committing to the community. We get one well rounded character and one that needs more dimension to him.

Same unbalanced aspects of the storyline and relationship occur when (spoiler alert) Gregori starts to feel ill. Why he does is a well written element of the book.

Again Salem’s responses doesn’t always match a physician’s ethic. Although, it was a narrative choice to have Salem choose to become a doctor/pediatric surgeon because of his competitive nature with his brother. Salem is written as excellent doctor, however he began.

The comparisons do add up. For me, Sam’s a problematic factor throughout the book. Right up almost to the end.

There’s some thrilling scenes of flying dragons, additional dragon information about clans and physiology, and a grand reunion of all the dragons and mages we’ve gotten to know at the finish. I adore that.

I don’t know if there’s going to be any further stories in this universe. They’ve entered a new age. I’m sure new characters will be coming out and asked to be heard. But probably not here.

If you love dragons , instant fated mates, and fantasy love stories, check out the series as well as the fantastic series that started it, Scales ’N’ Spells . Ruins remains my favorite of this series, as does its couple. But read this for that ending and to see everyone once again. Plus dragon twins! Adorable.

Review: Dragon’s Folly (Wings Over Albion Book 3) by Joy Lynn Fielding

Dragons, mysteries, romance and multiple ongoing storylines. Yes please. I’m just loving this series by Joy Lynn Fielding. Her Wings Over Albion just got more intriguing while expanding the series foundation knowledge and known dragon families previously laid out.

Now , as the book begins ,the fearsome, totally powerful head of dragons, Abimelech Mortimer, has call a moot, a gathering of the heads of the dragon families in a neutral location, for a major announcement. As well as other purposes on his agenda.

As the dragons rarely leave their own territories, this is an exceptional event, fraught with challenges and potential undertones. A fabulous way to introduce the characters and the stakes involved with the players and challenges faced.

We see briefly, some of the characters of the other novels. But our immediate attention will fall on the newest characters and dragons. As it should because they are remarkable.

Especially Ollie Shaw. Ollie is that character who shows astonishing growth from the awkward, somewhat disrespected lesser member of his family to dragon who lives and loves largely. His journey, which encompasses that of Archer Talbot, and his siblings Tim and Mia, is revelatory. We rejoice with him and Archer, along with Mia and Tim, as they shift in their thinking, struggling with their own personal pasts, and restructure into a believable, magnificent warm-hearted family. One we dearly want more of in the end.

Fielding adds to the dragon mythology and knowledge she’s building as well as bringing more dragons of color into the series. Everything is weaving together into a fabulous series tapestry that melds King Arthur, mystery, dragon politics, and love. I can’t help to see what happens next.

This is beautifully written, fantastic characters and gorgeous plots. Highly recommended!

Review: Dawnchaser (The Summertide Chronicles Book 2) by Sam Burns

The Summertide Chronicles is such an excellent , imaginative series. One of the best by Sam Burns, who’s given the readers many incredible worlds and characters to explore and fall into love with.

Dawnchaser is the second in the series, and the author is still exploring the world, the magic, and the threat that’s making it imperative that the four main powerful ruling families come together to find a solution before it’s too late.

For what exactly isn’t exactly clear yet. But that is has to do with changing natural conditions and a rumbling Mount Slate, well it’s sounds ominous enough.

Burns gave us an initial glimpse into the four families as that fiasco of a gathering in Gloombringer. There we met various individuals from the white-haired, imposing Moonstrikers, the dour Gloombringer, the power-mad Dawnchasers, and the wild Sunrunners. Each family able to use their gifts/talents by way of bonding with both an individual sentient crystal and then the head of the House with its most powerful House crystal.

It’s a fascinating, compelling element as the sentient crystals have their own charm and personalities. And, depending upon the person that they are bonded with, a complex relationship between them.

That dynamic is seen here in multiple threads, letting Burns go deeper into the concept of what the crystals might actually be.

Dawnchaser follows up on the traumatic events from Gloombringer, that brings the Moonstriker, Cove, to the Dawnchaser family territory and estates on the mission to hunt and eliminate Huxley Dawnchaser.

Instead,Burns gives us Cove , as well as other members of the Moonstriker family, revisiting an older personal nightmare and understanding that the Dawnchaser’s have been yielding a legacy of even deeper family abuse.

Florian Dawnchaser and his younger sister, Fawn, who’s sensitively portrayed as person with Down syndrome, are beautifully crafted characters, vividly realistic and engaging in every aspect of their storylines. From the beginning of this book, where we and the Moonstrikers see them in a very different way and situation to the development of their personalities and the family dynamics as Cove helps them and himself deal with the trauma that Huxley and the Dawnchaser legacy has created.

It’s just a tremendous novel. There’s so many layers here to appreciate and to feel connected to as multiple characters work together to forge new futures, right the some of the devastating crimes done in the past, and help create hope for the next generation.

I love this series and characters. And can’t wait to see what the next book will bring.

Review: Conflicted (Hopeless Blessed Book 1) by Lark Taylor

Conflicted might turn out to be one of my favorites in this multi-series universe about demons, angels and various supernatural beings getting their soulmates and HEA. It’s a heavily interconnected, richly layered universe where the storylines and well written characters keep weaving together throughout each other’s lives and series arcs.

Those are precisely the superbly crafted elements Lark gives us where Conflicted excels here. Several of the important characters, Micah and Dimitri, archangels who were a part of a longstanding ancient angel brotherhood, have had a ongoing storyline that stretches from Luck of the Devil (The Reckless Damned Book 4, through the Damned Connections series up to Conflicted.

It’s been a tortured dynamic as Dimitri found his soulmates (Lucky, a human and Dagon, one of the sons of Lucifer) while Micah mourned the loss of Dimitri, the love that was never his. Each angel has, through the course of the many series, done or asked of the other, some truly questionable acts. Micah to get Dimitri, Dimitri to save his soulmates.

Now Lark, in some gorgeous plotting and character development, gives each of them the redemption arc that they deserve (Micah) and,frankly, have been needing (Dimitri).

That it arrives via the figure of a demon that had helped to save the other soulmates is perfect. That’s Nox, one of a group that is brought topside after that last battle.

Nox is both unexpected and an amazingly powerful character. Again, Lark had some great surprises and twists in store for the universe, characters and plot lines when she brought in this character.

The battle scenes are vibrant with action and emotional moments. The characters have the depth to go with the dramatic climaxes and plot lines that Lark has created for them. And the potential for the series and characters that’s been laid out is intriguing and anticipatory.

I’m waiting happily for the next one to be released.

Put this series on your list,it’s incredible. And include the previous series too. But read them in the order they are written. That’s a must.

Review: Cleric of Desire (Tales from the Tarot) by Amanda Meuwissen

Amanda Meuwissen is a author I find so fascinating. It’s in her approach to writing and storytelling that is so unique and intimate that makes her books stand out, as does this latest novel.

Cleric of Desire, a story in the fascinating multi-author magical Tales from the Tarot series, is one that’s very personal to Meuwissen. Don’t miss out on the author’s forward. In it the author gives the reader insight into what it means to be a demigendered person because she’s been through it.

This perspective and insight is one of the keys to understanding why Jeffrey’s gay demiboy journey feels so emotionally real. His struggles to find himself are so elusive at times because he feels that he’s seeing so much that doesn’t define him so it’s hard for him to discover himself. That raw frustration and hidden pain is relatable.

Meuwissen’s ability to bring Jeffrey and his journey vividly to life, within the parameters of an extraordinary universe that includes a sucubus seeking love/freedom as well as a historical area and LGBTQIA community finding unity? Just amazing.

This series is unique in that those fabulous covers are part of the story and are also a Tarot card that’s part of a deck.

The characters here are beautifully crafted, they exist within an exquisitely built location of historical significance and events, and the storylines weave together with a sense of wonder and mystery that compels the reader forward.

Highly recommended on every aspect.

I’d have a wall simply of these covers. Outstanding.
