Synopsis

After trading the barracks for a fixer-upper rental, navy SEAL Zack Nelson wants peace, not a roommate—especially not Pike, who sees things about Zack he most wants to hide. Pike’s flirting puts virgin Zack on edge. And the questions Pike’s arrival would spark from Zack’s teammates about his own sexuality? Nope. Not going there. But Zack can’t refuse.

Pike Reynolds knows there won’t be a warm welcome in his new home. What can he say? He’s an acquired taste. But he needs this chance to get his life together. Also, teasing the uptight SEAL will be hella fun. Still, Pike has to tread carefully; he’s had his fill of tourists in the past, and he can’t risk his heart on another, not even one as hot, as built—and, okay, yeah, as adorable—as Zack.

Living with Pike crumbles Zack’s restraint and fuels his curiosity. He discovers how well they fit together in bed…in the shower…in the hallway… He needs Pike more than he could have imagined, yet he doesn’t know how to be the man Pike deserves.

Excerpt

“What do you mean they’re not coming?” Zack tried hard to sound like the badass navy SEAL he was now. He’d passed all sorts of interrogation training—there was no reason he couldn’t hide that he didn’t particularly like this guy. Or this fancy bar where he and his nontrendy clothes and military haircut were out of place. He’d agreed to go out for drinks with a group. His friend Ryan had promised him a drink for finishing his SEAL qualification training and getting his trident, and Zack had figured dealing with the rest of Ryan’s crowd wouldn’t be horrible. But tolerable was a far cry from being stranded alone with Pike freaking Reynolds without Ryan as a buffer.

“They blew two tires getting out of Santa Monica and are waiting on a repair truck now. Ryan said to have fun without them.” Pike looked harmless enough—shorter than Zack with a lean build and bright red hair and freckles that made him look too young to drink—but Zack knew from experience he was anything but benign. Pike was the type of guy who would flirt with wallpaper, but he seemed to have singled Zack out for special attention ever since their first meeting at a LAN party.

Which was all well and good, but unlike a lot of Ryan’s crowd, Zack wasn’t openly gay. And what Zack hated was that Pike seemed to see through all his “no, really I’m straight” protests and see things Zack refused to even think about. And a whole night with Pike? Torture. And that was coming from someone who’d been tossed into frigid water with his arms and legs bound. Repeatedly.

But he’d happily endure another round of drownproof training if it meant an easy out of this situation.

“Is Landon coming?” Please say it’s not just us. Surely, Pike’s omnipresent sidekick would be there to bail Zack out.

“Nope. He’s doing research at the Hadron Collider for the next few months. Just us, I think.” Pike grinned at him. “Alone at last, right?”

Zack guessed that the Hadron was one of those supersmart things Pike’s crowd just assumed everyone else knew about. He certainly wasn’t about to appear dumb and ask. “You don’t have to stick around on my account,” he said instead.

“Dude.” Pike smacked him on the shoulder. “I’ve had a shit week. Another three interviews for jobs for the fall, another three fuckups on my part. Don’t make me drink alone.”

“I guess I could do a beer.”

“On me, right? We’re all super stoked that you passed SQT.” Pike gave him another of those disarming smiles.

Ba-deep-deep. Zack’s phone chimed. Sure enough, there was a message from Ryan apologizing for bailing. Have fun with Pike, Ryan ended. But whatever you do, don’t let him talk you into shots. He looks scrawny, but he can drink you under the table. Trust me.

Zack shoved his phone away. Nope, no way was he doing shots with Pike. Last thing he needed was to get drunk and forget himself around the guy.

“So what’ll it be? They have a whole selection of craft beers here.” Pike offered him one of the little bar menus artfully strewn around on the huge antique wood bar.

“A Bud’s fine,” Zack said. He’d never developed a taste for the fancy stuff. This whole place was fancier than he was used to, what with the exposed hardwoods everywhere, the prettified bar food emerging from the kitchen, and the painted inspirational quotes behind the bar. Even the name, Mellow, was a far cry from the hole-in-the-wall places he’d drunk at in college or even Big Ted’s, the little sports bar right off base that his fellow SEALs favored.

Pike signaled the burly bartender, who frowned at them after Pike gave their order for a Bud and some fancy-ass beer Zack had never heard of. “Hand stamps, please. Both of you.”

Zack stuck his hand out, showing that the bouncer had indeed checked his ID. Pike put his arm right next to Zack’s—way too close for comfort. “See, look at us, finding things in common.”

“Getting carded is hardly something to be proud of,” Zack mumbled as he pulled his arm away. Back in San Diego, when he went to the bars with his friends, they never got carded anymore. And he liked that—he was twenty-three now, for crying out loud.

“Of course it’s not for you, Muscles.” Pike did that whole standing-too-close thing again, moving over so others could get to the bar.

Zack really shouldn’t like that Pike noticed what the past few months of training had done for his physique. He’d always been lean, but days of log- and boat-carry drills had carved out muscles he hadn’t even been aware he had. Zack accepted his beer from the bartender, then followed Pike to one of the little high-top tables ringing the bar area.

“Seriously, you are jacked now.” Pike winked at him, giving him the sort of once-over Zack’s buddies gave girls in bikinis. “Look at those shoulders. It even makes you look taller.”

Flattery was not going to work on Zack. Not even a bit. Besides, Pike was the short one, probably five seven or so. But Zack was a perfectly respectable five ten. In your boots.

“Truth, man. I just call it like I see it.” Pike shrugged. And that right there was the whole problem with Pike—he had absolutely no filter and a way too keen sense of observation.

Blue Knight By Carol Pedroso – Excerpt

Franc stood under the hot water of the shower and tried to wash off the touch of the other men. His lips were split, his ass was throbbing, his throat felt like it was lined with sandpaper, and he had various other cuts and bruises.

Five minutes remaining, came the computer’s voice. Franc cursed the fifteen-minute-shower rule; he wanted to stay there all night. Rinsing himself once more, he turned off the water and grabbed his towel.

As he exited the cubicle to head for his locker, he froze. Just entering the shower room and heading for the lockers was the Peta ambassador. How was he supposed to get past him? His instinct told him it wouldn’t be good if the ambassador saw him. But his attention was captured by what the alien wore. He had only ever seen the ambassador in his robes of office—except in the hallway after the water incident. But then he had been too distracted to notice. Now the male wore human workout clothes: shorts, T-shirt, and training shoes. The fit of the clothes showed off a muscular but lean build, and lots of blue skin. His red hair was braided and hung down his back, touching the top of his fine, firm ass.

Franc must have stared too long or made some sort of noise. The ambassador turned and their gazes locked for a few seconds before Franc dropped his to the floor.

His cheeks heated as he realized he was still wrapped in his towel and nothing else. His mind raced as he tried to think of a way to get his clothes and get out with the minimum of conversation.

A Spark in the Shadows by Kassandra Lea

Warden drove the motorcycle up on the sidewalk, parking it close to a brick building that looked indistinguishable from all the others. He killed the engine, letting the silence sweep in. Tonight the streets were truly deserted. Warden placed his helmet on the seat, then passed his hand over a sigil, uttering a single word. The charm was another gift from the necromancer; nobody would even see the bike now, as the charm had masked it. Knowing he hadn’t been followed, Warden glanced back nonetheless. If his fellow boys in blue knew where he was and why, he’d be thrown out on his ass so fast. He had worked too hard to break the cycle….

And yet here he was skulking around in the dark.

“Suppose the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” he grumbled. The pack, his so-called family, were vagabonds, low-rung thieves, and two-bit criminals. Professions he swore to get away from, a way he refused to live his life. The day he graduated the academy, with flying colors of course, he became a disgrace, no longer the esteemed pack leader’s son. A traitor, especially since he wouldn’t play dirty for their sake.

Oh, but if they could only see him now. The unquenchable thirst of love drew Warden to the God-forsaken place.

Rusted hinges protested as he forced an old steel door open. There was no telling the identity of the business that used to call the space home, a mess left behind. Broken bits of furniture; long dead leaves, never mind the absence of a tree outside; and other pieces of trash, some the likes of which Warden tried not to think about, littered the floor. He wasn’t sure if the lowliness people could sink to disgusted him or made him sad. Either way, he loathed the stench and barely cared that all these things served their purpose; to keep the unwanted away.

Hand-to-Hand (Wet Seal #1) by H.L. Holston & Eleanor Bruce

Is this the day I’m going to die? Gavin Rathman couldn’t get that question out of his head as he dove behind a large rock, gunfire erupting all around him. As he contemplated his upcoming demise, he saw Ensign Noah Hudson running toward him. He gestured for his teammate to hide with him behind the relative safety of the big rock he was currently behind. Gavin finally breathed a sigh of relief — Hudson was a terror with his HK MP5N gun.

“You alright, Doc?”

Gavin gave a thumbs up sign, and looked briefly over Noah’s shoulder asking, “Where’s Hawkeye?”

“Hawk is up there.” Noah pointed to the craggy rocks high above their heads where their team sniper was perched to pick off enemy insurgents. The guy had to be half bird; he could sit for hours crouched at a vantage point so high that would make most people’s head’s spin. Hawkeye got his nickname when he first joined the teams because he loved Marvel comics, most especially the character he was named after, the legendary archer and assassin.

“What about Bender and the Lieutenant?” Gavin asked.

Noah’s smirk was almost dangerous. “Bender’s setting charges. You know how he likes his little toys. And Jack’s keeping the natives off our backs.”

“When’s the helo coming in?” Gavin looked to the sky, willing the chopper to come into view. They were seriously outnumbered here.

Noah looked at his watch. “Five minutes. Then we’re all bugging the fuck out of here, Doc. Cultural mission with tribal elders aborted. And a personal note for the CIA: The natives here are not friendly, nor open to monetary bribes from us filthy infidels.”

“Fucking spooks and their secret agendas.” Gavin turned his head and spat. Goddamn dust and sand.

Their mission had been idiotic from the get-go. They were left short one operator when Johnson blew out his knee on a training mission before they’d left San Diego for Kabul. He was going to be out of commission for months, maybe forever, if the surgery didn’t correct his injury. They’d made do without him; they were SEALS, that’s what they did: improvise and adapt.

Everything would have been fine if the CIA hadn’t shown up with their brilliant idea to offer a fifty thousand dollar bribe to the leader of a small band of Taliban fighters to turn on his brothers-in-arms. However, Gavin and his team followed orders, no matter how stupid and treacherous they were. So, if the CIA said go make nice with the terrorists with a bag of cash; then, SEAL Team One made nice with a bunch of Al Qaeda terrorists.

Gavin heard a soft pop to his far left and looked over to see one of the head of one of the locals who’d been trying to kill them for the last fifteen minutes explode.

Hawkeye to the rescue.

“I just wish Jack had let me shoot their leader. I had the perfect shot.”

A voice came out of nowhere, “Always the diplomat, Hudson.”

If it weren’t for his training, Gavin would have jumped. The Lieutenant certainly lived up to his nickname of “Ghost.” The man could infiltrate any location with a stealthy silence that even impressed other SEALs; Noah and Gavin never heard or saw him coming.

He watched as Lieutenant Jackson Blackwater hunkered down next to Noah’s left side, his dark good looks a throwback to his Native American ancestors. Gavin found it hard to believe the man was thirty-six as he looked ten years younger.

While they waited for their helicopter to arrive, Noah responded to their team leader’s remark. “I didn’t see you trying to talk your way out of the situation either, Jack. With all the flash bangs you were throwing, sir.”

As Jack opened his mouth to reply, all hell broke loose. Looking back, all Gavin could remember was the color red.

Blood red and Jack screaming in pain.

Love Undercover by E.M. Leya

Curt shut off his bike and pulled the helmet from his head. Sweat dripped down his spine as he glanced up at the sky, wondering how it could be so damn hot so late in the day. The sun was just setting, but it had been an unusually hot summer for the area with temperatures reaching into the triple digits in early June.

He ran his fingers through his thick, long brown hair, wishing he could cut the length off and go back to the buzz cut he enjoyed before going undercover. It wasn’t just the hair, but the beard too. It itched and added to the already sweltering heat, but it also helped to hide his identity.

Too many years. Sometimes it seemed like a lifetime since he swung his leg over the bike and infiltrated the biker gang. The Boars had their hand in every illegal activity you could think of, and Curt worked hard to gather evidence and build a case so they could take the group down. He was close. Each day he woke up, he wondered if it would be the day he would get the call that they were ready to make arrests.

As he glanced at the clubhouse, he sighed. The newest venture for the club really bothered him, and it was also why he was pushing to close things down and make arrests. He glanced past the long driveway where several bikes were parked to the covered sheds behind the house.

Inside those sheds were dogs, several strong pit bulls that the club now used for fighting. It turned Curt’s stomach to think about those dogs suffering. He’d seen all kinds of shit go down in this club, but few things bothered him as bad as seeing the dogs fight.

Every instinct in him was to put a stop to it right away, but they had too much invested in this case to rush anything. Still, he’d met with his superiors, letting them know the time had come. They couldn’t wait any longer. He hoped they would listen and they could make arrests soon.

Fatigue and stress consumed his body, but he had to keep focused. One mistake and his life would be over. This wasn’t a simple game. This was a world of life and death, and he needed to be at his best.

One benefit to his years of working with the gang was he now held leadership for his area. He was third in command in the state, which meant he had final say in many of the things going on. With the agency behind him, everything he touched was golden. He had access to the best drugs, the cheapest guns, and nothing ever seemed to touch him. He could get away with anything. The men beneath him had to listen or risk his wrath. He was firm enough, while trying to stay within the law, so that most had a healthy respect for him.

Some things, like the dog fighting, he couldn’t control, that was a new thing that came from higher up, but what took place inside his clubhouse and within his small group of members, he could do with as he wished.

He rolled his shoulders as he headed up the path to the clubhouse, noticing that the lawn needed to be mowed. He was strict about keeping the clubhouse looking somewhat neat. His men bitched and whined, but he reminded them that a rundown place attracted attention, attention they didn’t need. He always said if he was running drugs, he’d put an ‘I Love Jesus’ sticker on his bumper, and hire two young girls in homely dresses to drive the car. It blew his mind how people would use beat up, old clunkers to do their illegal activity.

He didn’t expect some Home and Gardens cover look from them, but he did demand that it wasn’t an eyesore like so many other clubhouses were.

“Dylan!” he yelled as he walked through the front door. “Who the fuck is supposed to mow the lawn. Get your ass on it. This place is starting to look like the city dump.” He blinked as his eyes adjusted from sunlight to the interior.

“Curt, shit, get in here.” Dylan called from the back living room. “You got to see what we found sneaking around the place.”

Curt groaned at the excitement in Dylan’s voice. It meant something major was going on. Readying himself for anything, he kicked aside someone’s backpack as he made his way to the back room.

Several of the other bikers stood in the doorway, but parted as Curt’s large frame pushed his way through them. The emotion in the room crackled, and as he watched the other members, his heart sank. This wasn’t going to be good. It was the same feel that he got when they were about to do a big job. The looks on some of the faces were ones he saw right before someone died.

“Look what we found sneaking around the dog pens,” Dylan called.

Curt finally pushed through the mass of bodies and he froze, letting his calm demeanor slip for just an instant, but quickly schooling his features and forcing himself back into character. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Kneeling before Dylan was a uniformed police officer. His hands were tied behind his back.

“What the fuck is this, Dylan?” Curt walked around the men, coming to stand beside him. As he got his first glimpse of the officer’s face, his breath caught. He knew this man. More than knew him, he would never forget him. He quickly looked away, turning his focus on Dylan, praying that the man on his knees didn’t recognize him, and if he did, he would know enough to keep quiet.

“Found him sneaking around the dog pens in back. He said someone reported we were abusing animals. He’s seen too much, Curt. We gotta take him out.” Dylan held his gun in one hand and ran the muzzle under the officer’s chin.

Curt’s gut twisted. The man on his knees wasn’t just some officer, his name was Tony and he’d been in the police academy with Curt, God knows how many years back. The two didn’t just know each other, they’d dated during their training, ending things when they graduated and both went their separate ways. Once Curt moved and went undercover, he was sure he’d never see him again.

He stared at Tony, trying to see if he recognized him. With his beard and the tattoos that now covered his body, he didn’t look anything like the fresh shaved, clean cut recruit that he had been back then.

Tony on the other hand, looked just as good as he had when they met, if not better. His body was thicker, his muscles larger, and his eyes more alert and aware. The blond hair now longer than the buzz cut he remembered him having. His pale blue eyes reflected the fear he must have been feeling.

There was no doubt in Curt’s mind that Tony knew how much trouble he’d walked into, and with one wrong move, his life was over.

One More Time by Ethan Stone

“Yes, ma’am, I understand you’re not very happy with your husband, but that doesn’t mean you can attack him with a weasel.”

The couple had fought over which TV show to watch. Even though Mr. Palmer had acquiesced and let her watch Real Housewives of Washington D.C. Mrs. Palmer hadn’t liked the fact he had argued with her so when he’d gone to bed she’d tossed an angry ferret under the covers. Mr. Palmer had been bitten a couple times but there had been no major damage.

It was just another night as a cop in small town of Lovelock, Nevada. We never had anything exciting here. Mainly domestic disturbances like the Palmers. Some police offers would’ve preferred more action, but not me. I’d done four years in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and had gotten tired of dealing with punk gangbangers shooting at me. The three years at Lovelock had been far less exciting but much better for my blood pressure.

After settling the disturbance at the Palmers’ I cruised down Main Street making sure the boarded up buildings hadn’t been broken into by bored teenagers. Thankfully we only had more active businesses than empty ones in town. Not that we were a bustling metropolis by any means. I’d just braked to allow mangy stray black dog to cross in front of me when a man ran past my car. Because I was driving slowly I was able to stop in plenty of time. He stood staring at me for a moment before turning and dashing off. Normally I wouldn’t have wasted my time chasing him, but since he was buck-ass naked I figured I should bring him in.

I spun the wheel and turned down the alley he had fled into. Since it had a dead end, he couldn’t have gone far. I didn’t spot him right off the bat so I assumed he was doing his best to hide. I put the car into park, kept the lights on and stepped out.

“You might as well come out,” I hollered. “It’ll be a lot better for you if I don’t have to come in after you.”

“Okay, okay.”

I turned my flashlight to where the voice had come from behind two trash cans and the nude dude stepped out, his arms raised. I didn’t recognize him, which was odd since I knew most people in town. He was approximately twenty-five years old, six foot tall, one-hundred-eighty pounds. Muscular.

Shining the beam at his face, I asked, “Care to explain this to me?”

He chuckled nervously. “You’re not gonna believe me.”

“Try me.”

“I was hooking up with this really hot chick and her husband showed up. Had to climb out the window.”

I sighed. “Was her name Connie?”

“Yeah. How did you know that?”

“Let’s just say you’re not the first man Harry’s caught her with. She does it make him jealous.”

He rubbed his face then quickly put his arm back up. “Christ, I’m a dumbass.”

Excerpt #4

Recruited by Brenda Cothern

Officer Michael Knight was having a shit day. Shitter than usual for a Friday. It had nothing to do with the scorching Florida heat or the humidity that had his tee shirt sticking to him like a second skin and it had nothing to do with him being covered in alley filth. If only that were what had him livid and ready to kill. And so help him; if any of his co-workers made another Knight Rider crack when he entered the squad room, he was going to beat the ever living fuck out of them. The consequences be damned.

He could take a joke as well as the next guy, but the harassment over his name was getting out of hand. Pictures of ‘K.I.T.T’, some of which were admittedly cool, plastered around his work station were easily dealt with via a trash can. Knight Rider ringtones and ‘K.I.T.T.’ message notifications were annoying, but could be tuned out. However today, his fellow cops had gone too fucking far.

They messed with his baby. The only thing he really gave a fuck about outside of the job. They messed with his truck. The David Hasselhoff bobblehead stuck to his dash pissed him off to no end. Especially, since it took him a good twenty-five minutes to scrub the sticky shit off after he snapped the fucker in half. The bobblehead wasn’t in his truck the night before and his red and blue flashing police lights were fine when he used them three days ago. Someone at the station must have messed with his truck last night.

Everyone knew he had been staking out his current arrest for the last two days. However, the icing on the fucking cake that was his fury wasn’t revealed until he made his current bust. The red and blue flashing lights installed in the grill of his truck had been switched out to a red pulsing line that moved steadily from left to right and back again. Just like in the grill of K.I.T.T.

It was bad enough that he was covered in sweat, grit, and grime from the alley, but it wasn’t until he turned his arrest around and saw the new light bar that he saw red, and it had nothing to do with the color of the lights behind his grill. His suspect must have sensed something which had more to do with Knight being filthy from tackling him, because the man tensed. Wisely, the low-life kept his trap shut about the truck lights. Either he was smarter than he looked, or he was way too young to recognize the reference to the 80’s TV show.

Knight stomped into booking, roughly dragging the two-bit drug dealer behind him and leaving dirty boot prints on the while linoleum floor. He didn’t care about the floor and had tuned out the guy’s whining about ‘police brutality’ after the first time the man bitched about being tossed, unceremoniously, into the back of his truck. Knight pushed his repeat offender, the little fuck who refused to give up his supplier, roughly down onto the bench in booking. His shove was so hard that the man yelped when his cuffed wrists slammed into the wall.

“Jesus, Knight,” O’Conner huffed while watching the suspect slouch down on the bench to give his hands more room between his back and the wall.

Excerpt #5

Training Buds by Sara York

Dixon Carter’s heart shattered into a million pieces, his whole world imploded as he watched his husband make the moves on another guy. They weren’t just holding hands; they were kissing out in the open, not even trying to hide their love affair. Of course Dixon shouldn’t be here as far as Bryan was concerned. He’d flown home on leave, hoping to surprise Bryan, but he was the one who’d gotten the surprise of his life. This was supposed to be a big weekend for them. He’d made it, been accepted into training that led up to him eventually going into the Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL training in Coronado, California. Bryan had said he’d wanted to move with him, but after seeing his husband shove his tongue down another guy’s throat, he wondered if anything the asshole had said had been true.

Dixon drew in a breath, thinking that nothing would ever be the same again. He shook his head, trying like hell to comprehend what was happening. Had he really seen Bryan and that stranger kiss? Why the hell would his husband do this to him? He watched, wondering if he were mistaken, but Bryan pulled the other man close again, kissing him like he meant it.  Dixon closed his eyes and tried not to fall apart. How the fuck was he supposed to recover from this? He and Bryan had been together for eight years, since their sophomore year in high school when Bryan had moved to town. Bryan had stood by him through basic training, but he guessed Bryan had a different view of what commitment meant.

Dixon’s heart twisted as he grabbed his pack and lifted his hand to catch a cab, but he lowered his arm, shaking his head. He wasn’t going to run from this. He sure as hell wouldn’t leave his stuff with Bryan. No chance in hell would he allow the fucker to continue using his truck, or taking drives in the restored Mustang Dixon had worked on since high school.

He trailed Bryan and the new guy to their apartment, watching as the pair kissed and hugged before going through the front door. He waited on the street a few minutes before following them upstairs to the third floor of the walkup he and Bryan had picked out when he’d been on leave a year ago. God, just the thought of Bryan in their place, kissing that guy, made him want to hit something.

He slid the key in the door, hoping to catch them, and praying he didn’t. When the door swung wide he didn’t hear any sound for the first few seconds. Relief flowed through him, and then he heard someone grunting, the sound twisting through his gut, making him sick. Dixon knew he and Bryan were over for good.

Pain lanced his heart and he tried to breathe, but the air was too thick and his chest ached. He drew in a second breath, this one almost taking him to his knees as Bryan cried out like he was really enjoying himself.

How long? How many others?

The questions played through his mind as he moved to the bookshelf that held the signed baseball his grandfather had given him before he passed away. His bills were in a neat stack beside the ball and he grabbed those too. The TV and stereo weren’t important to him. Besides, he’d be living in the barracks once he moved to Coronado so things like TV’s didn’t really matter much.

While he was alone in the den, listening to his husband and some stranger get it on, he looked around the place, noticing the sweatshirt he’d given Bryan for his birthday tossed to the floor and the Navy mug he’d shipped for Christmas chipped and holding pens instead of being used as a vessel to drink from. The end of this relationship hurt like crazy. He couldn’t believe how painful anything associated with Bryan could be. The man had promised him love, companionship, and forever. Bryan was here taking care of things at home, but he’d really just been playing house with whomever decided to fill his bed.

Talking Trash with the Don of the Doms!  A Special Guest Post!

Hi everybody! I’m Robert Cage, one of the co-authors (along with Kathryn Sparrow) of Submission: Submit for Redemption, Book One. Thanks for hosting us today.

In the excerpt above, masochistic Army Ranger Everett Palmer meets His Grace, Finny Bainbridge for the first time. Finny has just rescued Ev from a violent assault by one of the more sex-crazed and disturbed patrons of Cuffed Links, an illegally operated underground BDSM club in Kabul Afghanistan. Hopefully you get a sense that there’s a lot of electricity passing between these two MCs. It only gets more intense as Finny draws Everett further into his illicit world.

Finny is a somewhat mysterious figure for most of Book One. He’s hiding a lot, mostly from Everett. Wanting only to capture Everett and coerce a confession from him, Finny finds himself falling deeply, inexplicably in love with the younger captain, which both thrills him and knocks him off balance.

We were lucky enough to get a transcription of a telephone interview conducted by Good Reads UK reviewer extraordinaire, Jessie Cox. Her mission, which she generously and gamely accepted, was to interview His Grace from his eponymously-dubbed Greek isle, Phineas, on the morning of his departure, with Everett. Here’s the interview in its entirety, Brit to Brit.

Jessie: Good afternoon, Your Grace. Thanks for dropping by.

Finny: Thank you, Jessie. How do you do? And call me Finny, my friends all do. I don’t often find myself on the other end of an interrogation, as you know [laughs]. Please—go easy on me.

Jessie: I’ll try, but I warn you I have Habib’s number in my pocket as well as a set of thumbscrews in case you’re stubborn.

Finny: Ouch! You’re ruthless—but a woman after my own heart.

Jessie: Quite right. So, what was your relationship with your parents like?

Finny: Right into the fray, eh? You don’t pull punches. [Pauses] To quote the Coen Brother’s delightful film Raising Arizona, it wasn’t Ozzie and Harriet. I lost my mother when I was young, and even when she was alive I believe I saw her once a day for perhaps an hour, after tea. It’s made it hard to even picture her face in my mind or hear her voice at this point. Father was a complete nightmare. When he was around, there was always something wrong it seemed, usually involving me. We never really connected. I was much closer to Habib, my father’s valet and now mine. Father used to have Habib discipline me when I was younger but it wasn’t very effective—we would both usually end up in giggles or tears, sometimes both. Habib never needed to strike me in order to get my nose back in joint. One stern look from him and the wind would exit my sails faster than you could say Jack Robinson.

Jessie: What accomplishment are you most proud of?

Finny: If I can’t name Finding the Love of my Life, in Everett, I’d say… well, that’s a tough one. To be frank, I’m not proud of anything I’ve done. Quite the opposite. I guess it would be a toss-up between starting to weed out contract interrogation jobs that are just wrong. Funny how that’s happened. I used to be such a terrifying son-of-a-bitch. Now, anytime I’m faced with a potential subject all I can see is Everett’s face. Pain is something I’m finding it harder and harder to take pleasure in, unless it’s with Everett, and in a consensual context. It almost feels a violation of our contract to share that with anyone else. Frankly, it has me a bit worried, but maybe it’s a cue that I’m in the wrong line of work altogether. Wouldn’t father find that funny? I’m proud of finally dumping Hector Ventana. What a disaster that was—he only brought out the worst in me, entirely the opposite of Everett in every way. Hector, if you’re reading this, it serves you right. Why are you still obsessing over me? As the yanks say, get a life!

Jessie: What is your most prized possession?

Finny: That’s another thing. Prior to Ev, I wouldn’t know where to start with the list—I have many beautiful things. But now they don’t seem so precious in light of having someone I can truly give my heart to. Though of course I don’t own Ev, not by a long shot. I don’t think anyone owns Everett. And—that bothers me a bit. Old habits die hard, you know. But in answer to your question, I think it would have to be a pair of antique watch fobs that date back a few hundred years, one of which I recently gifted to Everett. Though oddly enough, mine seems to have gone missing as of late.

Jessie: What was losing your virginity like?

Finny: Liberating. Terrifying—amazing. It was after a fencing match at Eton. I’d had my eye on this young man for some months and it was one of those things where each time I’d glance at him, I’d find he was doing the same. And not just glancing, our eyes were exploring each other. Granted, I think this happened quite a bit at fencing events—it certainly didn’t hurt that our uniforms were tight and clingy and we were always bathed in perspiration. This particular match was actually played on my family estate, so I had a very good lay of the land, as they say. Still, I was feeling more and more trepidatious as to what I would say to him—how could I express my feelings and not drive him away, yet also let him know how amazing I thought he was? And how would I get away with making a move on my home turf with forty or so staff roaming in and out of all those rooms. Turns out I didn’t have to say anything. He was waiting in the back of the hall for me just as I thought I’d lost him forever. We made love in a large dusty old closet—banging up against a stock of masks and foils—appropriate, isn’t it? [Laughs]. I spent god knows how many years getting up the nerve to come out of the closet and I find myself breaking cherry inside of one. That should have been a lesson, a harbinger of what was to come. Still, it was magic. My whole view of the world just opened up and a lot—not all—of my constant anger just seemed to leave me. Similar to how I’m feeling now, actually.

Jessie: Let talk more about Ev, since you’ve gone in that direction. What’s the biggest obstacle that you find in connecting with him? I assume you have your disagreements, as all couples do.

Finny: Oh yes. Right now, I’d say it’s trying to get him to see the forest for the trees, as they say. Ev comes from a simpler, more black-and-white world. He has had the responsibility of having many men under his direction in the Rangers but the effects of his decisions were always localized within his squad. The decisions I make can have ramifications all over the world, whether I like it or not. And when your scope of influence expands that far, you eventually hurt people as well as help them. That’s not something he understands just yet. Just as he doesn’t yet understand that I truly know what’s best for him. Not everyone is happy with our union, but I can’t speak too freely about that. He’s going to have to trust me as the road ahead may be difficult for him. But he should understand that, if he’s to keep to our contract as a willing submissive to me.

Jessie: Would you ever marry Ev? If so, where would you take him on your Honeymoon?

Finny: I get very nervous even thinking about that possibility. Not because I don’t want it, but because I don’t feel I’m quite worthy of him. Not yet, anyhow. And as I mentioned before, we still have a lot of hurdles to traverse. But where to go? The island I would think, seeing that it holds so many fond memories for us.

Jessie: The island you’re on now?

Finny: It does have everything we need. There are times I don’t ever want to leave it. Would be wonderful sometimes to just… stop the clock.

Jessie: What do you think is your biggest strength and your biggest weakness?

Finny: When I find something I want, I get it, no matter the cost. My tenacity is well-known. My weakness is that I sometimes don’t consider the cost of those things until it becomes too late. And there is always a cost—something I’m having a hard time learning. Sometimes that cost is monetary, but most often it’s emotional and even spiritual on occasion. I think spiritual cost is what’s taken its toll most on me, as of late.

Jessie: What is something sexual you haven’t yet tried but would like to?

Finny: [Pauses for several minutes, apparently in deep thought] No one’s ever asked me that. Outside of a few blatantly illegal, outright deviant acts, I can’t think of a damn thing. When I owned Cuffed Links, prior to giving it to Hector, I’d push the envelope in a number of directions. I used to take such pride in that. Now it all seems meaningless, a waste of time. The act isn’t what does it for me anymore. It’s hard to believe I’m even saying something like this. [Very long pause] The way I see it now, unless you’re with someone who means something to you, you might as well be banging a hole in the wall, a well-lubricated one, but still…. Why waste your time?

Jessie: Wrapping up, when you look into your future what do you see?

Finny: Everett and only Everett. Without him, there is no future—for me, anyhow. He’s the one thing I can’t afford to lose. And I can’t help wondering if there’s not a cost hidden in there somewhere that I’ve yet to encounter…. But, I must take my leave of you. Everett has quite a big decision to make this morning and we’re due back in Kabul today. Wish me well and it was wonderful chatting.

Jessie: Same here. I wish nothing but the best, Finny. Thanks again.

BLURB:

When Army Ranger Captain Everett Palmer enters gay BDSM club Cuffed Links, he is seeking brutal punishment for what he perceives to be an unforgivable failure: allowing an entire squad of men under his command to dieSFR_book1_500 while he worked to defuse a bomb at his base. Everett initially wants only pure pain, which professional interrogator and jaded British aristocrat Colonel Phineas Bainbridge is more than prepared to give. Their meeting, however, is not at all by chance.

Phineas has been contracted to coerce a false confession from Everett, implicating the captain in planting the bomb. Phineas has tortured many men in the past, but there is something different about Everett Palmer, a man whose sheer purity of soul causes the colonel to question his every selfish, devious act and legion of war crimes.

In Submit for Redemption: Book One – Submission, erotic romance and spiritual redemption come from the most unexpected places – from the seedy extremes of a smoke-laden, neon-drenched bondage den to the tropical, hedonistic pleasures of Phineas’ private Greek island.

On this unbidden psychosexual odyssey, Everett and Phineas find exactly what they don’t expect: a chance to redeem their troubled souls and fulfil their every romantic ideal. But the clock is ticking. The deeper Phineas falls in love with Everett, the harder it becomes to finish his assigned task. If he succeeds, the consequences may be far more explosive than he ever anticipated.

A BJ Review: Sarge (F.I.S.T.S #1) by Bey Deckard

Rating:  5 stars out of 5

Sarge coverSergeant Wilkes has had a long and prestigious military career. When he’s injured on the front, Murphy brings him in. Murphy is the opposite of Sarge… big, tattooed, and delightfully submissive. Can a couple space marines stationed on an alien planet where an endless war rages on find something special in each other?

Gritty, violent, somewhat gory short novella. Its kinky, smoking hot and romantic almost in spite of itself. This story made me bawl like a baby, and I loved it!

Sarge is an older, hardened officer Dom; Murphy a younger 6ft 8in quiet, muscular, tattooed, sweet enlisted sub. Murphy also has the ability to see psychic/emotional colors (auras?). The two come together when Sarge is injured fighting on the front line, and Murphy uses his special talent to help him. Right there on the battlefield, wounded and in pain, Sarge propositions Murphy:

“You’re a good boy, Murph,” he says softly to me. “You get me home, get me patched up, and you’ll see what good boys get.”

At first it’s just an interesting diversion for Sarge, but that changes as he comes to realize what he’s found in Murphy.

Murphy is intelligent, but he doesn’t talk much. And damn it, he doesn’t need to because the nuance of communication between him and Sarge is exquisite. When it comes to D/s, one thing that fascinates me is when the physically larger guy is the submissive/bottom. And my goodness isn’t Murphy an enticing one. But its more the two together that really gets me about this story. They’re perfect together. Such devotion. I was seriously holding my breath and biting my nails at the end.

Speaking of the ending, it felt a bit abrupt at first. But the more I thought on it, the more I realized that wasn’t the case–the ending is perfect. I would love to explain that specifically, but don’t want to spoil it. Just read this little gem. I highly recommend it and cannot wait for the next in this series to come out.

The cover conveys the savage heat of the planet, and the overlaid images give a hint of the size difference of the characters. A good representation of what the book has to offer.

Review: Dirty Deeds (Dirty Deeds #1) by S.E. Jakes

Rating: 4.75 stars out of 5 (should be 4.99 as it is so close to perfection)

DirtyDeeds_400x600British black op Cillian is deep undercover, his assignment so complicated, so twisted that not even Cillian is sure what the real purpose of his mission is.  Working for Special Branch 20 has meant doing whatever it takes to move his investigation forward.  It has also meant being totally out on his own without any support from his employers, alone for years.  Cillian has made a tenuous connection with the agent in the floor above him, Prophet Drews of EE, Ltd, for investigative purposes and a little pleasure too.  But now there is someone else on Cillian’s radar.  Someone who likes his sex rough and silent.  Cillian knows he should leave it at that.  But this new man is driving him wild and Cillian can’t seem to keep from pursuing him even though it might compromise his mission.

Former Navy Seal Mal is an operative for EE, Ltd.  Wanted in several states and countries, Mal is also considered crazy and dangerous by most of the people he works with. He is also a friend of Prophet’s.  His current assignment?  Tracking Cillian to try and find out exactly what and who the British agent is after.   But the mission has already turned personal for both Mal and Cillian through intimate encounters that should have stayed anonymous.  Soon the dangers are mounting as well as the body count.  But neither man is prepared for the  pain and betrayal yet to come when a devastating secret is exposed.

How can just 94 pages be so explosive?  The emotions and events of this story just seem to erupt like a geyser that has been building up pressure until it cannot be contained.  That’s what the men are like that SE Jakes has created for her Dirty Deeds story and series.  Mal and Cillian are titanium tough loners, made that way through their tortured pasts that include abuse and death, seasoned through brutal training as well as a variety of missions both successful and failed until it has all solidified into the dangerous, intelligent men they are today.

SE Jakes brings her characters vividly to life through descriptions and events guaranteed to have you hanging on by your fingernails.  Both Cillian and Mal have made appearances before in the Hell or High Water series, especially Cillian as he occupied the condo below Prophet Drews, an EE operative.  Now these men are the focus of their own action-packed, suspense-filled storyline, the characters who teased us unmercifully in the previous books are fleshed out with convoluted histories and traumatic events that are still only hinted at.  Mal and Cillian are playing with each other psychologically as well as electronically, each jockeying for the upper position in their investigations and surveillance of each other.  That each man’s methods include a playbook made up of mental games and sexual ones just serves to deepen a portrait of complicated men so sure of themselves and their methodology that they can risk their bodies without question.  It also includes some of the most combustible sex written. I’m talking incendiary hot, so hot and explosive that it starts to melt away the formidable walls each man has erected around their hearts and souls.

Mal and Cillian are men who have killed, perhaps tortured, schemed to reach their many goals.  And its to the author’s credit, that we care immensely for these men as we watch them teeter on the brink of a relationship with each other, against all odds and their own proclivities.  Because as hardened as these men are, deep underneath they still retain the ability to be hurt by the right person and events from their pasts.

Jakes keeps us and her characters guessing at every step in the storyline.  We are never sure who are the bad guys or when they will pop up to deliver a death blow and derail an investigation.  The phrase “pins and needles” was surely meant to be used in reference to the Dirty Deeds men and their stories.  There are so many twists here I stopped counting halfway through the story.  There are twists in their missions, surprises in their backgrounds, mind blowing revelations and one huge whopper of an ending that I never saw coming.  God, I love books like this.

Jakes keeps her narrative flowing rapidly along, like a river about to rise out of its banks at flood time.  It pulls in everything around it, sweeping it along a merciless path.  You are transfixed by the scene in front of you, unable to look away.  It’s dramatic, its mind boggling and its hold on you is magnetic.  Most of you will want to howl at the ending.  So howl away.  What a revelation! What a great way to end this story!  Only a small lack of context kept this from a perfect five but oh how close it came.  Pick it up and run to the nearest place and start reading.  Make sure you are comfortable because you will be there a while.  Consider this story,Dirty Deeds, and its connected series, Hell or High Water, highly recommended.

Cover art by LC Chase.  Once again the artist has created a cover that is perfect for the story and its characters.  Just terrific.
