A Free Dreamer Review:Dragon’s Hoard (Dragon War Chronicles #4) by A.G. Carothers

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Previously on Dragon War Chronicles, the first strike was made against their enemies, but the cost was heavy.

Mourning their losses, Danica still must prepare for dragons that will be coming to woo her. She already knows the dragon she wants to mate to, but will she convince Kollin that she’s ready to commit?

Of all the dragons going to Toulouse to meet Danica and see if they have a chance only one has a completely different agenda. He knows which dragon he wants and it isn’t Danica. Will Xavier win the heart of Danica’s brother?

Anchin Luu, Danica’s brother and manager of her Las Vegas casino, Dragon’s Hoard, has spent his whole life alone due to his deadly nature. A broken experiment and retired assassin Anchin isn’t sure what to make of the water dragon that has invaded his life.

Love is in the air, but so is gunpowder. SLIPs going missing, Coyotes crashing parties, and a mating you’ll never forget are all in store for you on the next exciting installment of Dragon War Chronicles.

Attention: This book contains explicit sexual content between consenting dragons, depictions of relationships that are MF and MM with a dash of doublemint fun.

I was really looking forward to Dragon’s Hoard, because I had quite enjoyed the first three books in the series. Sadly, I was kind of disappointed.

Two things before I start: This doesn’t work as a standalone, you really have to read the previous books in order to enjoy and understand this one. And then I should mention that I suffered from a serious book hangover when I started. So my lack of enjoyment was probably coloured by my absolute love for the book I’d read before “Dragon’s Hoard”.

To be perfectly honest, it felt like not all that much actually happened over the course of the book. There was no real suspense for me there and I was never really surprised by anything that did happen.

I’m not sure I like monogamous, serious Dani. Her approach to sex was refreshingly different and I’m almost disappointed she’s settling down now. Kollin honestly seems a tad boring, compared to all the other men around her.

The ending didn’t really convince me either. This is starting to turn into the kind of story where literally everybody is gay. Well, except for Danica and Kollin. But we get an in-depth look at several minor characters and they’re all gay. That’s a trope I really don’t like.

I did enjoy finding out more about Anthony, Danica’s older brother. He’s a really interesting character, but I did feel like the love story between him and the new guy was a bit sudden. Especially given what we’ve learned about his past.

Overall, “Dragon’s Hoard” wasn’t as great as the other books of the series. I do plan on reading the next part, though, since I really want to find out what happens next.

The cover art by Angsty G is, once again, absolutely gorgeous, just like all the other covers of the series.

By Scattered Thoughts

At over 50, I am ruled by my terriers, my gardens, and my projects. A knack for grubbing about in the woods, making mud pies, and tending to the injured worms, bugs, and occasional bird and turtle growing up eventually led me to working for the Parks. I was a park Naturalist for over 20 years, and observing Nature and her cycles still occupy my hours. From the arrival of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in the Spring to the first call of the Snow Geese heading south in the Fall, I am entranced by the seasons. For more about me see my bio on my blog.
