Excerpt

The warm air on my face invited me closer. I wanted to share his warmth. Isn’t that how it all started? Wanting him to chase away the winter chill. Begging him to. I looked up and immediately felt his mouth on mine. Soft but eager. He pulled back just long enough to yank his shirt over his head and then he was back on me. His hands on my chest while mine tore at the belt that was keeping his body away from me.

A moist sheen covered my overheated skin. I don’t know how much of it was due to the steam and how much was the result of my own desire for Daniel, but I didn’t care. My hands trembled as I tugged his zipper down. I splayed my palm against his hard abs and slowly followed his happy trail to my happy place. Knowing that I was more than just a girl replacement was liberating. He wants to be with me. And god knows I want to be with him. A guy. Two guys. It was surreal.

Digging my fingers through the coarse curls beneath the fabric, I pushed down even further. The outside of my hand grazed the evidence of his arousal. It was different for him too. His mouth locked onto mine, I couldn’t stand the wait. With a sudden urgency, I yanked down the last fabric on his body and pulled him into the shower.

The water was already starting to cool but it was still warm enough to feel good. The heat that we were generating was enough to keep us comfortable for a while. Daniel’s arms unfurled from around my back and I could feel him reaching behind me.

When I felt his soapy hands dig into the taut muscles of my back, I couldn’t stifle the moan. Letting my forehead fall to his shoulder, I relaxed against his body while he lathered up my back and shoulders. When his hands slid over the curves of my ass, I put my hands on his hips, ready to push back if things went too far. I wanted him but I wasn’t ready for him. Not yet.

“It’s okay, just relax,” he whispered into my neck while gently kneading the tight muscles that he’d never touched before. His large hands squeezed each cheek, letting his fingertips tease the opening without actually touching it. His mouth was on my shoulder, sucking on my sensitive skin. Grinding into his hips, my body begged to be closer. Both of our equally impressive dicks smashed between our bodies. I reached a hand between us to bring our rods together. I rubbed up and down his for a moment, reveling in how it felt against me. Knowing that I could do whatever I wanted with it. The question was what would I do now that I could? I wasn’t sure of the answer.

“God, that feels good.”

A Barb, A Zany Old Lady Review : Running With Scissors by L.A. Witt

Rating: 4 stars out of 5    ★★★★

RunningWithScissors_600x900When Jude Colburn receives a call from his former band’s manager, asking him to come back to the band, this time as their bassist, he doesn’t hesitate to agree. He’d left the band, Running With Scissors, after a breakup with his lover and longtime friend, Connor, a year and a half-ago. He was their drummer, but Jude is one of those gifted musicians who can play anything, so he’s okay with switching.

But, as he finds out when he gets there, most of the band members are not okay with him coming back. The turmoil they’d lived with as Jude and Connor fought was unnerving, but the fact that he’d walked out on them just as they were going to sign a recording contract, makes him #1 on their shitlist. Since his actions nearly broke them up, he’s persona non grata for quite a while when he gets back. One of the only people who is open and friendly with him is AJ, the man who replaced him as the band’s drummer. It doesn’t help that AJ is sweet, quiet, friendly and hot. Jude knows he can’t screw around with any bandmates ever again. After all, the reason he was invited back is due to the fact that Wyatt, another band member and friend, also stormed out after he and Connor broke up. Two disastrous flings with band members is two too many, and no one will tolerate another.

All is well during rehearsals, but when the band takes the stage for a live show, Jude is blown away by AJ’s outstanding performance. He’s not only dynamite on the drums, he’s become a completely different, absolutely hot and sexy wild man, and Jude virtually melts when, after the show, he stumbles upon AJ, and AJ, still hot and high on adrenaline from the show, grabs him and tongue-fucks him as if his life depended on it. Needless to say, Jude is hooked after that, and though they manage to refrain from acting on their attraction, they are attracted and are also fast becoming friends.

So what happens when one irresistible force meets another once the tour is over, and they are living at home while working on the album? And then what happens when their bandmates and manager find out? Heartache, angst, and an unexpected catalyst to start the process of healing unresolved issues.

This is more than just the usual rock band story. It’s really an introspective look at how one man makes the journey from selfish, immature bad boy to loving, supportive partner and friend. And it both explores and resolves underlying issues and problems which can escalate when a group of people who know each other so well for so many years suddenly find themselves faced with coworkers and friends who have grown up when they weren’t looking.

I really enjoyed this story for all the reasons stated above. It was deliciously hot and it was angsty, but I enjoyed Jude’s journey as he finally changed the way he reacted to emotional issues and became a mature man worthy of lasting love and friendship. I highly recommend this one to lovers of contemporary romance, musicians, hot tattooed men, and to those who want to explore more than just the surface of the romance when two men fall in love.

Cover art by L.C. Chase depicts the faces and upper torsos of two handsome young men, a blond in profile and a brunette, with upper arms covered in tattoos, facing forward. Below the title banner is a concert crowd scene. The cover a beautiful depiction of two rock star MCs.

A Paul B Review: Into the Dark Void by John Simpson and Robert Cummings

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Into the Dark Void

Corporal David Creswell develops a crush on PFC Blake Bickford the moment Blake enters the starship Excelsior. Before the men can explore their feelings, they are requested for a mission to find a missing space probe launched hundreds of years ago. Will their new relationship end before it begins?

David Creswell is a corporal in the United Space Force Marines of the planet Earth. He is ordered to meet the new batch of marines that are being rotated onto the space ship. When the seven new marines board the ship, he is immediately drawn to one of them.

Blake Bickford is newly stationed on the Excelsior. He goes to the corporal’s quarters to ask him about the social opportunities for a gay marine. He finds his commander extremely attractive and thinks he is picking up signals that the corporal would be interested in some fun along the way. When David tells Blake to strip, they proceed to enjoy the evening in the bedroom.

When a shuttlecraft docks with the Excelsior, an Admiral from the Space Marines has a secretive important mission concerning New Horizon, a deep space probe that has been malfunctioning. The probe did not self-destruct when it was suppose to and has been sending gibberish. They need to travel across the galaxy to retrieve data from the probe and then destroy it. The scientists that are going on the mission insist that Creswell and Bickford be assigned to the new starship that will be going across the galaxy.

Naturally the mission does not go as planned, for when do they ever do in these kinds of books or movies. It all starts when the command of the new ship finds out that our two heroes are in a relationship in a most public way, unbeknownst to them. The forced separation takes a toll on both of them. But the two guys manage to get themselves and the crew in and out of trouble before they make a return trip to earth.

This is a decent space cowboy romance novel. I enjoyed the nod to John Simpson’s recently ended series Condor One. The romance between the two characters was a bit rushed, almost like a paranormal mating, but enjoyable nonetheless. I like the fact that while David tends to be dominant in the bedroom, he is not using his superior rank to demand Blake’s submission. I felt the devotion of the two men when Blake must make a decision in the dark void whether to follow orders or save his lover, consequences be damned. If you are looking for sex and adventure, I recommend picking up this book. Here is hoping for either a sequel or further adventures in this story as the authors have definitely left open that possibility.

The cover art by Catt Ford shows two men dressed only in bikini underwear.  The men could very well be the two heroes.  It is a nicely done cover.

A MelanieM Review: Sinner’s Gin (Sinners #1) by Rhys Ford

Rating:  4.5 stars out of 5

Sinner's Gin coverThere’s a dead man in Miki St. John’s vintage Pontiac GTO, and he has no idea how it got there.

After Miki survives the tragic accident that killed his best friend and the other members of their band, Sinner’s Gin, all he wants is to hide from the world in the refurbished warehouse he bought before their last tour. But when the man who sexually abused him as a boy is killed and his remains are dumped in Miki’s car, Miki fears Death isn’t done with him yet.

Kane Morgan, the SFPD inspector renting space in the art co-op next door, initially suspects Miki had a hand in the man’s murder, but Kane soon realizes Miki is as much a victim as the man splattered inside the GTO. As the murderer’s body count rises, the attraction between Miki and Kane heats up. Neither man knows if they can make a relationship work, but despite Miki’s emotional damage, Kane is determined to teach him how to love and be loved — provided, of course, Kane can catch the killer before Miki becomes the murderer’s final victim.

I  arrived late at the Rhys Ford doorstep and am now reaping the benefits of being able to binge read through Ford’s amazing series starting with Sinners. What a rich tapestry Rhys Ford weaves with this first tale in the series, Sinner’s Gin.  A  musician, wounded in body and soul, a modern Gaelic warrior, read that police officer, who sees the treasure buried beneath the scabs and scars and a murderer bringing the past back with him makes this a story I couldn’t put down from the moment I started it. And did I mention a dog so entreatingly, believably scruffy and well, terrier true that he stole my heart as well?  I wolfed down Sinner’s Gin the way Dude would a fine piece of steak, ok, any piece of steak.  With groans of appreciation and a longing for more.

Sinner’s Gin, a band destroyed by a drunken driver which left one member alive to mourn the loss of not just the band but its members he called family, and the man Damien that Miki thought of as his brother.  After a tramatic prologue, Ford drops us into what’s left of Miki St. John’s life and its depressed and ugly.  Subsisting on booze and junk food, the only thing keeping Miki from death is the thought that Damie’s hateful parents would inherent  his music rights (and other things) and use them in ways Damien opposed.  That fight keeps him alive, just barely.  Ford brings this despondent man alive, from his caustic thoughts to his life at the stripped down warehouse which we see through his eyes.    It will take several grisly events and a scruffy terrier to get Miki moving again, the foremost is a eviscerated body dumped on the GTO Damien bought him.  That brings his past back and Kane Morgan into his life.

Kane Morgan is not a solitary creation.  And how I thank Rhys Ford for this.  Kane Morgan stomps into the story and our hearts carrying with him the Clan Morgan from mother Brigid who could teach the warrior queen Boadicea a thing or two to Donal, the “da”, a father so huge and elemental that he is frequently described as Ent like (a description I not only loved but could see).  It doesn’t stop there.  Conner, the oldest brother, the twins Kiki and Ryan, Braden, Riley, Ian and Quinn.  And yes I know I got the order wrong. Six boys and two girls.  A cousin, Sionn on the Finnegan side.  You take all that Irish, all that Gaelic love, heart, and  fire and when added together it become narrative magic.  One that carries over from book to book.  Oh, and except for Quinn, who in another book or alternate universe would have turned out to be a mage, they are all law enforcement officers or firefighters or something just fierce.  They are that known entity….an Irish dynasty found in police and firefighter families everywhere.

Not one of which is slighted in the character department.  Each person is rooted deeply not only in the family and story but in the authenticity of their characters.  In their very believability they carry weight within them, a depth of feeling and soul.  But each is so different from the other, even if only slightly.  And its that slight difference that makes them feel so much like family, along with a dialog and family dynamics that anyone with siblings will  recognize.

Yes, I have to mention Dude.  I have terriers.  Dude is a terrier and continuing character.  Yes, you should never give them broccoli.  The farts are catastrophic and profound.  It speaks of research or at least close proximity with terriers who are fond of greens.

The plot and killer will make you heartsick at times and adds in an element that continues through all the stories. That of musicians with wounded, abused backgrounds that will find their way into a new band with Mike St. John and into the Morgan family Clan. Music runs through this story and series, music is in lyrics at the beginning of the chapters or in mentions of favorite bands beings ticked off by Morgan sons.  It flows everywhere.

By the end of this amazing story I was  reaching for Whiskey and Wry (Sinner’s #2), hearing the beat of the Bodhrán pounding in my ears, growing louder as well as my anticipation for what I knew was coming next.  The startling ending of Sinner’s Gin had me on edge and now I’m more than ready for my journey to continue with the Clan Morgan and the musicians they love.

I highly recommend this story and the next, and well, the entire series.  Rhys Ford has quickly become a “go to” author for me  I love it when that happens.  Need a new author to love?  A new series to read?  Grab up Sinner’s Gin by Rhys Ford and get started.  Amazing people and things await you!

Cover art by Reece Notley.  I really like the covers for this book and the series, all done by the same artist.  Great job.

A Stella Review: White Lies by Jack Byrne

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

White Lies coverBrent Winton is doing all the wrong things for all the right reasons. Since the death of their parents years ago, Brent is helping his younger brother Zach through law school in sunny Queensland, Australia. The boys share a cheap flat, and Brent works two jobs to support them, but Zach thinks the second job is merely bar tending. In reality Brent has turned to gay prostitution to ensure that Zach has all the best textbooks and the up-to-date laptop he needs so he can focus on his studies. When hot Russian refugee Dimitri moves in next door, Brent finds him mesmerizing, but fears that if he gets involved, Dimitri will expose Brent’s white lies. But Dimitri has a dark secret of his own, and the question becomes how either of them can learn to trust the other without blowing their cover.

White Lies by Jack Byrne is a simple story, there is nothing twisted in the plot, just a common guy, Brent, who chose to be a rent boy to support his brother Zach in his dream to become a lawyer. He meets Dimitri, a Russian refugee who just moved in the flat next to Brent and soon they are attracted to each other. It’s a story of sacrifices, abuses, friendship and courage. It’s sweet and full of lovely characters; I liked each one of them.

I found White Lies to be what I call a “family’s book” because it’s not just Brent and Dimitri story, but Zack’s one too and it’s the story of Dimitri and his chance to have his own family in a better place. Everything is set around the family and the related feelings, first of all the love no matter what.

My issue with this book was its length. It was too short for the various themes the author decided to talk about. Especially in dealing with Dimitri’s past. It seemed to me a little shallow in some parts just cause it felt rushed. I liked the blurb but I was expecting something different and I would have preferred a longer and with more depth story. I hope the author will give us a sequel cause I’m really curious about how the MCs’ story developed. They need more.

At the end White Lies was a light and sweet short story, well written and easy to read. I like Jack Byrne’s style, in this book too, even if it’s not my favorite so far, but the characters made it an enjoyable reading.

Cover art by Bree Archer . I love the cover so much, especially in the light use of the violet color. It’s well done and the models reflect exactly how I imagined Brent and Dimitri in my mind. Well done!

A MelanieM Review: Buttermilk Ranch (The Hard Riders #1) by Patricia Logan

Rating:   2.5 stars  out of 5

Buttermilk RanchWendell Blackowl has spent all his life in the working cow horse show ring where toiling with sweaty cowboys all day is the fodder for wet dreams. Though privately he’s come to terms with his sexuality, publicly Dell’s had to build a façade. When his beloved horse Buttermilk dies, Dell finds himself at loose ends so he decides to pick himself up by his boot straps and do what he’s always wanted to do… open an environmentally friendly organic vegetarian café.

Pace Avila, well known music critic, has been drawn to Austin by the live music scene. When friends invite him to check out a fresh new dinner experience, Pace reluctantly agrees to push the deadline on his national column. He isn’t interested in vegetarian food or a restaurant with the cheesy name of Buttermilk Ranch Café, but the moment Pace lays eyes on the stunning cowboy chef, things begin looking up.

When openly gay Pace walks into his cafe and his life, Dell realizes he’s tired of living a lie and tired of being alone. When Mother Nature throws an unprecedented storm at Austin, the muddy waters threaten to wipe out everything Dell’s worked so hard to build. He soon realizes that with a man like Pace by his side, love really can conquer all.

I love my gay cowboys and a gay cowboy turned chef?  Well, that had all the makings of a book to rope in my heart! See? Got cute, combined cooking and rodeo analogies…oh never mind.  Enough of the diversionary tactics.  From that gorgeous cover which is finely detailed right down to the wooden spoon in the back pocket to the blurb, I was gleefully anticipating a new story to trumpet.  I really need to stop getting ahead of myself.

The author’s narrative starts derailing from the beginning.  Patricia Logan has her characters use what I like to call “countryspeak”, call it an author’s country answer to Spanglish.  Its not really true to any regional location you can pin down, or to specific sayings or colloquialisms, its just that the author throws in a “ya” or “heya” here and there enough for their people to sound like the way the author thinks someone from that  part of the country sounds like.  Compounding the issues is the problem of continuity.  The “ya” is then quickly followed by a “you” or “your” not “ya’ll” or what have you.  Sometimes “countryspeak” rules, other times its completely forgotten, a disruption in character foundation and all around displacement the story’s setting that is echoed in other segments that work against the story as well.

The most basic of these elements is characterization.  Patricia Logan’s Wendell Blackowl has a very detailed background, from his family history, life on his parents ranch to his long time with the rodeo, all closeted and with good reasons set down for that status.  From the prologue on, Logan present’s Dell as a well defined man.  I liked his Buttermilk Ranch/Restaurant, even thought Logan made the argument for Dell’s vegetarianism logical and appealing.  However, none of that lasts very long.  With the entrance of Pace, comes instant love (yet no charisma) and Blackowl’s characterization is forgotten as a new one is created along with the needs of the storyline.  Dell is a virgin.  Dell and Pace and going to go slow.  And no they don’t.  Dell loves and respects his mother.  Then comes out to her at…no, its just too sad.  Would you really take the chance of doing that to your beloved mother just before she gives an important speech at a Pride event?  It makes no sense the way that it was written.  Or given the way the relationship dynamics were laid out in the story.

Yes, there are some nice moments. Also some weird ones with a bdsm club.  Perhaps, there is another series this book is temporarily connecting with, I’m just not sure because its not adequately explained. Maybe they will arrive in later books.  Either way, the country-speak, the characterizations and continuity…all big Cs that went wrong in this story had already brought the rating down past the 3 stars.

For some of you,  the sweet love story that exists, buried underneath the structural defects I see, will be enough for you to enjoy because its a quick story.  For you, have fun reading.  For all the others, there are other cowboys in love for you to discover, whose dialog and colloquialisms will drop you into their romance and location as though you are part of their lives and  scenery.  I wouldn’t settle for less than that.

Cover art by AJ Corza.  This is one of my favorite covers.  With the long hair in a braid that shouts Dell to the chef’s spoon in the back pocket.  Its marvelous right down to the colors.

A Mika Review: All Man by Jay Northcote

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars   ★★★★

“You’re the sleek little sports car to my Land Rover.”

All Man coverFrom the moment Gareth walks through the door of the salon to fit some new sinks, Jules can’t take his eyes off him. Jules has always been attracted to men who are his polar opposite, so burly Gareth is Jules’s fantasy man.

At the weekend, Jules gets into a tough situation with another bloke in a gay club and Gareth comes to his aid. Gareth rejects Jules’s subsequent advances but leaves him with the hope that his attraction isn’t completely one-sided. Fantasy could become reality.

With Gareth’s work at the salon nearly done, he’ll soon disappear from Jules’s life for good. Time is running out. Jules needs to prove to Gareth that he’s tougher than he looks and that his feelings run deeper than gratitude.

I did not want it to end. Why??? Because it was really good. Jay Northcote knows how to write her guys. I love the contrast between the men that she puts together. I don’t like reading about the same type of men being attractive to each other. I like versatility in my guys. Plus I love a guy wearing make-up and loving themselves while wearing it. I’m so happy that Jules got his story. He was definitely a stand out character from [book:Top Me Maybe?|25548075]. He is this charismatic, flirty, guy who has a crush on the bear-like Gareth. That’s swoon like right there.

Up until this book we’ve only seen confident Jules, s0 just seeing him nervous and vulnerable about Garreth was really sweet. Gareth was a great guy, and I liked how he used his voice to state that anyone can go through something traumatic and look different. I think Jay Northcote did a good job with the assault scenes. She wrote it from a character who if we seen on the street most people wouldn’t think that they would be a victim. I really liked them together. It was some steamy and sweet scenes. I didn’t want it to end. I really like the author’s British writing voice.

Cover Art by Jay Northcote, spot on presentation of Jules. I really like seeing him on the cover with all his beauty.

Barb, A Zany Old Lady Review :Three’s Company by N.R. Walker

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

This is the kind of story where the characters burrow into your heart and stay long after you finish the last page.

Three's Company coverWilson Curtis arrives at the small hotel in Key West to begin his long-awaited two-week vacation for two—but without Mr. Two. His boyfriend Rod has joined with others in his Alabama hometown to ostracize him when it’s learned that he’s gay. Rod is a police officer who saw Wilson covertly for nearly two years but left him without a second thought the minute Wilson was outed while having drinks with Rod and a few other friends one night. And just like that, his life was turned upside down, because not only did he lose Rod, the townsfolk boycotted his restaurant business, and though his friend Callie is keeping it open for now, business is declining as the rumors of his homosexuality spread.

When he arrives at the beachfront hotel, he’s greeted by the handsome, dark-haired, blue-eyed manager, Simon Stanford. Simon excitedly tells his live-in lover—carefree, blond, gorgeous Adam—about the new guy who’s arrived, and together they make plans to seduce him into their bed for a night of ménage fun.

The couple is surprised, however, to discover that one night is just not enough, and they find themselves extending the invitation for the length of his stay. Suddenly, their feelings are involved, and when that happens, more than the positive feelings emerge—there’s a miscommunication, and Simon storms off and won’t speak to the others; outsiders are trying to buy the hotel; and life as they knew it goes rapidly downhill.

This was the best M/M/M romance I’ve read to date. These guys had diverse and interesting personalities as well as careers that jelled, life circumstances that fit together like puzzle pieces, and hot, steamy sex in places and positions that stoked the imagination. And they kissed—in two’s and three’s—sweetly, and oh, so sinfully, not-so-sweetly. I can honestly say this is the first time I’ve read a ménage that I can actually picture working—from the sex to the personalities and vice versa. I very highly recommend this to all M/M romance lovers who want to dip a toe into the pool of ménage, and if you’re already into threesomes, why wait? Pick up your copy right now!

Cover Art by Posh Gosh features a bright and beautiful Florida sky and blue waters. Superimposed on that is a photo of three men sitting on the beach with the center man’s arms around the others. There are also other photos depicting tropical paradise themes. Very nice, attractive, colorful cover!

A MelanieM Review: Blind Hearts (King of Hearts 4) by Havan Fellows

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Blind Hearts coverIn a world where supernatural creatures openly exist, who can blame them for coalescing in one of the most fascinating and erotic places on earth? Welcome to New Orleans.

Emotions are a human flaw, certainly nothing he’s familiar with…

Yet when Laurant looks at his mysterious lover, something happens deep within him. He’s a sex demon who has eyes for only one man. Man? When did he stop referring to his lover as a meal? And when did he turn into a green-eyed demon? Perhaps when family came calling, requesting help. No one wants their lover surrounded by sex demons. If Laurant can’t get a grip on his newly found emotions, humans and supernaturals alike will be in danger.

He lost his one chance of finding out who he is, what he is…

Gun’s been hunting down the witch that pilfered his memories and issued him false ones to no avail. It’s like she disappeared off the face of the earth. Unfortunately, that scenario is quite plausible. It leaves Gun with a major dead end and a mind that is no longer his friend. Memories of a false love with a beautiful woman hinder his present unexplainable need for a certain incubus. But does he truly belong here…with a lover who can’t feel love, a city that isn’t his home, and a ragtag group of poker players that now call him friend? It’s time for Gun to forget the past and create a future for himself. At least the forgetting part is simple.

They both have personal issues to conquer, if they could just stop trying to conquer each other first.

Havan Fellow’s round four story, Blind Hearts is so very aptly named.  You couldn’t find two characters with bigger blinders on their hearts than Gun and Laurant.  Gun is in the dark about his identity, right down to the type of being he is, except that its definitely not human.  Not a comforting fact to be in possession of.  Laurant seems to have so many people messing with his future, including his father.  The fuddy duddies of the Incubus world aren’t happy that Laurant goes the male route instead of the approved female one when feeding. And one top of that?  That Laurant is feeding from another supe, supernatural that is?  As against the laws as they come.  Plus there is a very big evil in town and…. now they are discovering they have feelings for each other to deal with? Nope, they would rather keep their focus straight ahead rather than have to look inside at what’ their hearts are telling them.  Self imposed blindness indeed.

Fellows has created a merrily as sin, deliciously sexy as, well hell, demon, Laurant,  and paired him up with an enigma of power, Gun. That the enigma is comes in the wrapping of a gorgeous hunk is all that Laurant needs to be hooked, not that he is ready admit it.  The author has let the layers built up around Laurant at the beginning of the story fall away book by book, revealing a complex individual underneath the flamboyant persona Laurant shows to the world (all dimensions of the world).

Its been a wonderful show, one I have reveled in.  Gun on the other hand, has had to be built up from nothing, added to layer by layer, book by book, a balancing act that’s been sort of mesmerizing to read about.  Each character’s truth being revealed by adding or subtracting layers, scene by emotional scene.  And still each is blind to the other man’s feelings about the other.

Blind Hearts takes off the blinder’s.  At the end, of course.  And does so with a kick to the heart and the head.  But never with any definite knowledge of what it all means, if anything.  It could still be all smoke and mirrors.  Or not. Maybe its something far worse.  A cliffhanger that will break your heart.

We will have to wait for book five to find out.  I’ve heard  tell I should be sharpening my pitchfork because of the events that are coming.  Hmmmm.  I can’t wait.  I love the anticipation.  Bring it on!

Cover art by Laura Harner.  I can see Laurant in this model.  He’s sobering up a bit, who wouldn’t under the circumstances.

A BJ Review: Love Starved by Kate Fierro

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

Love Starved coverAt twenty-seven, Micah Geller has more money than he needs, a job he loves, a debut book coming out and a brilliant career in information security before him. What he doesn’t have is a partner to share it with—a fact that he’s never allowed to bother him much. Until Daphne, a close friend, gives him the card of a high-class escort she highly recommends. Micah has no intention of contacting the man, but a moment of drunken weakness unleashes the longing romantic in him and Micah wakes to find that he’s made a ‘date’ with the man… a date for which he’s paid over a thousand dollars in advance and tasked Angel to: “Show me what it’s like to feel loved.”

A well-written story with intriguing main characters. It’s written entirely from Micah’s point of view, and I’m coming to find more and more that single POV isn’t my favorite. So often it leaves me wanting to be more in touch with the other character. Being on the outside and seeing only through Micah’s eyes, we get a very one-sided view of Angel for quite a long while. There are hints that things are going on beyond what we see, which was fine at first but I did began to get frustrated when Micah either didn’t pick up on things or got sidetracked from them so easily.

Micah is successful and a bit of a nerd/geek. Due to being hurt by his first and only boyfriend Brian, he’s leery of relationships. Brian, his ex, is portrayed in such a negative manner that it rather left me wondering what Micah had ever seen in him that had caused him to be so very much in love that his breakup with him would cause him such pain and disillusionment. I’d have loved to see more nuance to Brian in his memories, the good along with the bad.

Angel is bi-sexual and a larger percentage of his clients are female than are male. After the initial fantasy date, due to being seen by someone close to him, Micah chooses to rehire Angel to be his pretend boyfriend a few times rather than admitting to having hired an escort.

The relationship between these two is slow to build, often one step forward and two steps back, and I enjoyed that. Micah continued servicing his clients for some time after they met, and Micah didn’t once attempt to sway him away from doing so. Also while Micah easily could have taken advantage of fulfilling his sexual fantasies with Angel, for the most part he didn’t, even after he paid him for a sexual date. He’s a very sweet guy, and I loved that about him. Loved the slow burn of their romance.

Even after we get to the point of seeing a bit more about what is going on with Angel, things still moved slowly. A few things bugged me about Angel/Aiden’s motivations for doing the things he did, they were a bit over the top of the whore with the heart of gold theme for me. The info given on his background didn’t make me buy into him having enough motivation to prompt him into doing what he did for the reason he did. And Micah’s family were all way too sweet and accepting of a situation that might well have caused at least a smidge of concern. A minor annoyance I found jumping out at me quite early was how often both of the characters winked, it started to feel contrived after a while.

Overall though, I very much enjoyed reading this exploration of two men slowly learning to trust in each other after both have had trust issues in the past. There were many poignant and sweet moments that kept me fully enthralled. The sexual tension was high, and the romance was at times deeply touching.

The cover sparkled. It stood out from the others and called to me with its art and the bright, warm sparkly colors.
