Length: 28,153 words

Publisher: JMS Books

Heartbroken after the death of his beloved Nana, Hannes, the family outsider, finally allows himself to grieve. The legal battle over Nana’s quirky old house — the only place he’s ever felt accepted and loved — is over, and he moves in and finds a sense of peace.

… And a rabbit.

An adorable bunny with a huge personality moves in, too, and refuses to leave. Hannes instantly falls in love with the sweet animal who helps heal his heart. But one morning, Hannes’ view of the world changes when the rabbit transforms into a man. A man named Mattis.

After the initial shock, Hannes and Mattis discover a connection between them that runs deeper than it seems. Will their newfound feelings survive unraveling secrets and meddling families, and grow into something real? Something deep and everlasting?

Nell Iris is a romantic at heart who believes everyone deserves a happy ending. She’s a bona fide bookworm (learned to read long before she started school), wouldn’t dream of going anywhere without something to read (not even the ladies’ room), loves music (and singing along but, let’s face it, she’s no Celine Dion), and is a real Star Trek nerd (“Make it so”). She loves words, poetry, wine, and Sudoku, and absolutely adores elephants!

Nell believes passionately in equality for all regardless of race, gender, or sexuality, and wants to make the world a better, less hateful, place.

Nell is a forty-something bisexual Swedish woman, married to the love of her life, and a proud mama of a grown daughter. She left the Scandinavian cold and darkness for warmer and sunnier Malaysia a few years ago, and now spends her days writing, surfing the Internet, enjoying the heat, and eating good food. One day she decided to chase her lifelong dream of being a writer, sat down in front of her laptop, and wrote a story about two men falling in love.

Nell Iris writes gay romance, prefers sweet over angst, and wants to write diverse and different characters.

Death’s plan for revenge is derailed by his lust for one of the Creator’s angels.

With curiosities niggling him, he challenges his god, seeking freedom from stringent rules. Though the prize might look wonderful on the surface, it comes with a heavy price the angel will bear for eternity.

Death’s banishment was only the beginning of his descent. Since then, he’s concocted a scheme to overthrow the highest being, proving him to be a liar. Although confident his plot will succeed, he convinces one of High’s top helpers to assist him. However, Death never intended for feelings of affection to consume him. Suddenly wrecking God’s perfection isn’t as important anymore.

Two gods join forces and become bonded in more ways than one. Can they overcome their emotions to achieve their ultimate goal?

Death’s Angel is the prequel story to Immortals, chronicling the very beginning of Lucifer’s ascent as the god of the third and fourth planes. This story involves male pregnancy and mating.

A Stella Review : I’ve Got You by Becca Seymour

RATING 4 out of 5 stars

When a single dad and a newly outed veterinarian meet by chance, it takes red-cheeked conversations, a tentative friendship, and the willingness to put their hearts on the line to show these men they’re made for each other.

Single dad Davis Jackson is busy balancing his coffee shop and being the best dad he can be. That doesn’t mean he’s not lonely. After a fumbling encounter with a man who looks as gorgeous as he does unhappy, Davis is left wondering who the mystery man is.

All Davis knows is that he has never felt such an instant attraction to anyone before, but when he discovers the brown-eyed man’s identity, it’s clear the recently out-of-the-closet veterinarian is lost and quite possibly broken.

This is exactly the kind of story I like to read, sweet, cute, full of children and laughs. I read I’ve Got You by Becca Seymour in one night, it caught my interested from the beginning and it was  a joy to read, easy and quick. It’s not a shallow story, there’s not too much drama but it’s packed with feelings, all kind of them, friendship, love, loyalty. There is a strong sense of family here, not just the blood one, on the contrary the family Davis has created for his daughter and himself is composed by Carter and Tanner (from Let Me Show You), his employees and Scott. The same Scott you probably hated if you read Let Me Show You. In my opinion the author did a good job at redeem this character, I soon fell in love with him too and forgave him for the behaviours he had with Carter. Scott and Davis were lovely together and the way Scott acted around Lilly showed how great he really was.

I liked I’ve Got you very much, I think it was so much better than the previous title. I will surely read more about this author.

The cover art by Claire Smith is very cute, simple and clean, I like it.

A Chaos Moondrawn Release Day Review: Never a Hero (Tucker Springs #5) by Marie Sexton

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

This is part of the Tucker Springs series. The books have different authors, so although some of the characters are featured in other books, this can be read as a standalone. This is a meet cute with depth.

Having Owen’s first person POV lets the reader see and feel what his life is like having a congenital arm amputation and stutter. When he gets a new neighbor downstairs, his world changes in ways he could never imagine before. Not because Nick “fixes” anything, but because Owen’s exposure to the outside world is expanded so he observes and learns things for himself that make him question his world view. I didn’t feel I missed anything at all not having Nick’s POV because the writing doesn’t allow it. Nick’s sister has a similar amputation, making June a powerful catalyst. She is a friend who can really understand, but also is a complete contrast to how Owen handles things. June has lived her life with love and support and it shows. That doesn’t mean her reactions to the world are more mature or correct, just different–which shows Owen he can react differently too if he chooses.

I won’t talk much about Nick or Owen’s dad because I don’t want too many spoilers. I will say I adored Nick, but his actions are super frustrating. I could say the same thing about Owen’s father. Most of Owen’s issues stem from his mother, who is completely unpleasant. Watching him gain confidence during the few months of this book is a pleasure. When he actually has a real life with activities and friends, he gives up the unhealthy fantasy life he was living in. The dialogue and the inner monologue flow naturally so the reader feels a part of Owen’s growth, sharing his realizations and small victories. Once Owen actually has a support system in his life, he goes after what he wants, and that is Nick. Everything is not magically fixed at the end, but the characters are set on a much better path that is more likely to be happy and successful.

The cover art for this rerelease was done by Reese Dante. I have to say this model is more appealing and the piano plays a major part in the story.

A MelanieM Review: Recipe for Romance (Recipe for Romance #1-4) by Ari McKay

Rating: 4,25 stars out of 5

Four couples, four different stories — and one spicy Recipe for Romance from author Ari McKay!

Welcome to Montgomery House, Charleston’s finest restaurant. When you walk in the front doors of the stately former mansion, you’ll be surrounded by true Southern charm. Owner Rhys Montgomery will personally welcome you, while the tantalizing scents of Executive Chef Stephen Pierce’s latest culinary masterpiece linger in the air. Enjoy a walk in the gardens or an elegant meal in the dining room, as you watch the love stories play out around you…

Bay Leaves and Bachelors — Clay Turner’s heart was broken by a wealthy man who said he was boring. When rich, outgoing restaurateur Rhys Montgomery sets his sights on the quiet academic, drawn in by Clay’s intelligence and sex appeal, he finds he has an uphill battle to win Clay’s trust. Can Rhys burrow his way into Clay’s heart, or will Clay’s insecurity become a wall between them that not even true love can break down?

Fennel and Forgiveness — Seven years ago, Max Boyd broke Darius Cooper’s heart. Darius wanted a commitment, and Max wanted to focus on his career in Georgia’s television industry. Their ten year difference in age and experience tore them apart, but fate throws them back together when Max arrives at the Montgomery House, where Darius now works. Will Southern Wedding Belles bring them a second chance for love or is Darius’s trust too shattered for Max to heal?

Ginger and Gentlemen — Ian Pierce has lived in his older brother Stephen’s shadow his entire life, always feeling second best. His best friend, Matt Davis, is the only person he trusts to be on his side. Despite being in dire financial straits, Ian wants to refuse Stephen’s request to film an episode of Mouth of the South at Ian’s restaurant, but the bonus money offered in the contract is too much to resist. He accepts without knowing the hefty bonus comes from Matt, not the production company. Will Ian feel betrayed by the one person he trusts above all others when he finds out, or will Matt’s desire to help Ian succeed even at his own financial risk take them from friends to lovers at last?

Cinnamon and Seduction — Chef Stephen Pierce has talent and a determination to succeed that is matched only by his fierce temper and prickly personality. Yet his long-suffering personal assistant, Robert Logan, has carried a torch for Stephen since the day they met. Everyone around Montgomery House knows Robert is in love with Stephen — everyone, that is, except Stephen himself. Can Rhys, Clay, Darius, Max, Ian, and Matt find a way to make Stephen see that Robert is the perfect man for him, or will even Robert’s legendary talent for matchmaking fail to win him the man he loves?

I thought Recipe for Romance (Recipe for Romance #1-4) by Ari McKay was a wonderful read.  I enjoyed the romances, especially the collection as it centered around a restaurant and  it’s owner and staff.  Each person from Montgomery House, a beautifully restored mansion in Charleston that’s now one of it’s finest restaurants, gets their own story here and HEA, starting with its owner Rhys Montgomery.  So here are my thoughts on all the stories.

Bay Leaves and Bachelors: Rating 3 stars out of 5

I thought it interesting that Bay Leaves and Bachelors with Rhys and Clay is the only story where the two men aren’t either a couple with a previous romantic history or just a long history of friendship/established relationship of some sort.  Rhys and Clay meet in Bay Leaves and Bachelors for the first time and have a rather quick instant love attraction that’s out of the norm for all the others.  So in many ways it also strikes me as the weakest story of the four.  I felt both characters were well done, including their passion for history and old buildings.  The research element seemed authentic as did everything about Charleston, a place I’ve visited and loved. No, it was Clay’s reactions, the the unanswered questions about his job towards the end that just felt so off that it threw the entire story for me.  I kept looking for answers in the other stories and never got them.  Oh well.

Fennel and Forgiveness Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5

Darius Cooper runs the dining hall with precision and utter efficiency.  It is his domain and his place of solace when need be.  Now that’s about to change when the production company of the tv show Southern Wedding Belles arrives to film its pilot episode and brings with it his ex, Max Boyd.   it’s been seven years since Max broke his heart when he left him in Atlanta saying he wasn’t ready for a commitment and now he’s here, the one place he thought he would never see him again.  McKay gives us heartbreak made fresh again in  two men who never stopped loving each other.  There’s a age difference and a realistic lack of maturity that helped break them up the first time.  The only thing this story needed was just a tiny bit more length to get the resolution and reunion perfect.  Otherwise, I loved it.

Ginger and Gentlemen 4.5 stars out of 5

I almost want to review the next two stories together because they are about the Pierce brothers.  Both chefs, one the fierce perfectionist terror of the Montgomery House kitchen, Stephen. He has the last story.  And his younger brother Ian Pierce, who runs a retro dinner he owns in a small southern town, featuring home cooked food.  With him in this endeavor is his childhood friend,Matt Davis.  Ian’s dinner is in financial straits due to a former financial manager’s swindal, so when hiis brother offers to come film an episode of his new chef series (along with a healthy payment) at his dinner, Ian is hard pressed to say no even though they are estranged.  I loved this story because it becomes about the harm one father does to his children  by his favoritism and their disparate upbringing.  This is full of angst, from both sides, years of pain built up and bursting all at once.  On top of that we have a friends to lovers story evolving (for both brothers, both of whom have been ignoring what’s right in front of them for years).  Two men yearning for two stubborn and in pain brothers.  And the story will carry over into the next.

I think the brothers and their partners are by far my favorites with Stephen and Robert winning by a head.

Cinnamon and Seduction 5 stars out of 5

Stephen oh Stephen.  Love this character.  Imperious, wounded, marvelous Stephen and his equally exquisite Robert.  They are in every story and steal them away to be honest.  It’s hard to concentrate on any other couple when Robert and Stephen are in the room.  They just have that extra something!  So it’s fitting they close out the collection and get their HEA.  What a fight it is to get them together as Stephen’s confidence has been shaken by the clashes with his brother and the memories of his childhood that it reawakened.    Also the network loved the episode with Ian, all the tension and the brothers magnetism worked on air so they want more of them together….around the country.  That means major changes in every part of his life. This story includes challenges, change, and an ability to be brave, for two men.  Yes, it was my favorite story with my favorite characters.

What is also not to be missed is the recipes at the start of each story featuring the main ingredient listed in the title.  You will want to copy them down to try them all at a later date.  Just looking at them made my mouth water.

If you love contemporary romance, here are four stories in one place to enjoy.  I recommend it highly.

Cover art absolutely works for the story.  Love it.

A Lila Review: Espejos (South Texas Lore 1) by Michael War

Rating: 2.75 stars out of 5

After his mom passes away from a terrible accident, Carlos heads home to Tres Reynas for the funeral—and to reunite with his brother. Given he left after his parents abandoned him for coming out, it’s not a homecoming he’s looking forward to.

Once home, he learns a neighbor wants to steal his family’s ranch, and his brother is considering selling it. Determined not to let the ranch be lost, Carlos works to save it—with unexpected help from the handsome, rugged Eugenio.

But Carlos can’t seem to focus, especially with his mother’s image seeming to haunt the ranch mirrors, like she’s trying to tell him something—or maybe like he’s just losing his mind.

Espejos has an interesting concept. I like the idea of something beyond the veil helping Carlos find the truth behind the ranch’s troubles. Unfortunately, the book felt short merging reality and the supernatural elements. The concept isn’t far fetch from Hispanic culture and the author did provide an authentic flavor to the characters heritage.

I wanted Eugenio to be on Carlos side. It was hard to believe in their relationship when he didn’t. I understand his hesitancy but it seems a bit of an extreme reaction to Carlos panic and anxiety.

The plot it’s slow and it takes time to see the full picture. I kept waiting for more to happen but it never did. Everything get solves like “magic” and there isn’t much mystery for the reader to be invested in the story.

I did enjoy the reconciliation between the brothers and how Beto found an opportunity to start anew.

The cover by Jennifer Gavens is a literal representation of the story’s concept. It’s all about the paranormal aspect but it’s missing the sense of place in which the story takes root.

Excerpt

Domingo Menchaca. Just hearing name brought chills to Carlos’ spine. One stare from the patriarch of the Menchaca family was enough to make most people freeze in their tracks. Except for Carlos’ parents. Domingo used his stern demeanor and formidable presence to bully almost everyone that got in his way. But not Hector and Elena Rocha. They never let Domingo get the best of them, even when he came at them with everything he had. Carlos knew that if they were going to fight, they needed to find a way to dig into their DNA and pull out whatever they could.

“But we can’t just sit around and let this happen though. There has to be something we can do.” Carlos was pacing at this point. He always did when he got excited or anxious. The way he was feeling he was going to walk straight through the floor.

Beto stayed behind the desk. “There’s not much we can do now. I’ve been calling lawyers all over, and they all say same thing: just sell. And to tell you the truth, I think I just might.”

Carlos stopped pacing. “You can’t be serious. How can you think of selling all this? This is our family’s legacy. We have a responsibility to keep this going.”

Beto came around from behind the desk and confronted Carlos. “Do not lecture me on our family’s legacy or responsibilities. In fact, you are the last person who can tell me anything about that. Besides, what is it to you? I’m gonna ask you again: Why do you care so much now?”

Carlos didn’t say a word. Part of the reason was because he was filled with so much rage. The other was because he didn’t really know the answer himself. Beto was right, he never thought of going back, and he certainly never pictured himself taking over the ranch. But there was something pulling him in, making him say those things. He couldn’t explain it. One thing was for sure, he was not about to let Beto know that he lost his job. That would give Beto too much ammunition to form his own conclusions.

“Oh, so now you have nothing to say,” Beto exclaimed.

“Would you believe anything I told you? Fine, yes, some of this is guilt. I do want to make some things right, especially after hearing that Mom called out for me. But I still hold so much anger, and it’s hard to let go. Maybe I just feel that this would help me move past all this. If you sell, then I’ll really never get a chance.”

For a moment it looked as if Beto might have sympathized. His eyes had a hint of concern. But as soon as it came, it went just as fast, and once again Beto’s eyes displayed nothing but anger towards his brother.

“Poor you. You know other people are gonna feel this too? I’ll have to let go of everyone. Well, the ones who haven’t left. Eugenio was able to convince some people to stay, and luckily, I have an account that Menchaca hasn’t found, so I can keep them paid for a bit. But that won’t last long, which is why I think it is best that I just sell the place before it is too late. There will be enough time for everyone to find a new job, and the money will help me get settled somewhere before I figure out my next move. So, whatever guilt trip you are on, you need to stop. Your life isn’t the only one that matters.”

It was now Carlos’s turn to return the anger. “I never said it was all about me. That’s why I want to fix things, so that no one has to lose their jobs. And we can run this together, like I’m sure Mom wanted.”

Beto walked towards the door and stood by it. “What Mom wante–  I would love to keep arguing with you about this, but I’ve got calls to make, and then prepare for the rosary tonight. Though it would be fun to see you try and do some of this type of work. Maybe I should let you do some of the chores around here. Then you might not want to stay and I can sell.”

The lamp on Beto’s desk flickered a bit, then the small mirror on the opposite wall fell off, shattering into several pieces.

“Great, more bad luck,” Beto moaned as he walked over to pick up the pieces. Carlos walked over and helped him.

“Careful, don’t cut your hands on that,” Carlos cautioned.

Beto laughed. “You sound just like Mami when you say it like that.” Beto’s look went from laughter to sadness. “I miss her so much. It hurts to sell, but I don’t see a choice. Not with how dirty the Menchacas are fighting.”

“I feel like there is still more to all this that you aren’t telling me.”

Beto kept on picking up the pieces.

“Beto, please, what is it?”

“I didn’t get a chance to see if there was a will on file. Someone broke into the house the other day and left a mess in here. Papers were scattered and torn everywhere, and the computer and files were damaged beyond repair. I called the police, but they were no help. They said that since I didn’t know if the papers existed, then I couldn’t be sure someone took them. They said it was probably a kid looking for drugs or quick money.”

“But you don’t think so.”

“No, but I can’t prove it was Menchaca. He’s not going to stop, and I just don’t have the energy.”

Carlos stopped collecting pieces and placed his hand on his brother’s shoulder. “You’ll see. We can fix all this. Just give it a chance.” Both went back to collecting the broken glass. Carlos wasn’t sure, but while he was examining one of the pieces, he thought he saw something moving in the corner of the room. Yet when he turned, nothing was there. He chalked it up to simply being a figment of his imagination and continued to help Beto clean up.

An Alisa Review Waited So Long by JM Dabney

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

What happens when your best friend’s son comes home and he’s all grown up?

Devon Hoffman has a secret. He’s wanted a Daddy all his own, but when you’re pushing fifty, you’re completely over the hill. Newly divorced and trying to be single again after an almost thirty-year relationship, he’s lost and needs someone to ground him. Except he’s anxious and his depression intensifies until Bern returns after leaving the service and the younger man suddenly takes interest. Can he let his guard down and risk losing his best friend or should he do whatever is needed to keep his secret safe?

I was so excited for a new daddy/boy story and while the story was nice I wasn’t big on the execution.  Bern has been in love with his dad’s best friend for years and after leaving to avoid temptation now that Devon is single Bern has come home.  Devon has hidden his desires for so long that when they start to be brought out but a much younger man he starts to feel even more conflicted.

One thing I did love in this story was the explanation of the daddy/boy dynamic, that it is a mindset not an age, which is perfect for this story but many others and how more open minded some should be about those relationships.  However, the relationship between these two felt forced and I couldn’t help but feel Bern was pushing Devon a bit too much to get what he wanted, especially when Devon needed help accepting what he wants.  I did feel bad for Devon having not had the loving marriage he had always wanted and then being cast aside, though when we actually meet his ex I can’t believe he ever thought it would work.  I can tell that Bern loves Devon but he came off as mostly stalkerish with his constant observations since his teens and pushy.

The cover art by J.M. Dabney is nice and gives a good visual of Bern.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Interview with J. Leigh Bailey

I’d like to start with a big “Thank you!” to Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for having me here today to celebrate the upcoming release of Fox Hunt, the fourth book in my Shifter U paranormal series.

With so much going on in the world today, do you write to explain? To get away? To move past? To widen your knowledge? Why do you write?

I write for the same reason I read: ESCAPE. Honestly, sometimes the real world sucks—you just have to turn on the news or review your Twitter feed to see this—but books, especially romance novels, provide an escape like no other. As a reader, I love knowing that no matter what happens to my characters, no matter what challenges they face, or how bad the bad guy is, there will be a Happy Ever After. As a writer, it’s very much the same. One of the frustrating parts of watching the news or seeing people be hateful to and about each other, is how helpless it can make you feel. There’s only so much a person can do, and sometimes it feels like it’s not enough. As a writer, I take back some of that control. Sure. I can make the world my characters live in tough, but then, with a few strokes of my fingers, I can make it all right again. I add a little heart ache and a dash of angst, but then I turn around and create love. There’s nothing more rewarding than creating a world of love and hope, even if it’s fiction. Sometimes, especially because it’s fiction. As a writer, I can create that same escape mechanism that I’ve relied on as a reader. Now, hopefully other can escape reality for a while in a world of my choosing, in a world where love and hope really can conquer all.

Have you ever had an issue in real life and worked through it by writing it out in a story?

I’ve been battling depression since I was a teenager. For years, I used romance novels to avoid dealing with the negative thoughts and emotions in my head. Novels were an escape, for sure, but they also became a crutch—and not necessarily a healthy one—for me. Eventually I learned better coping mechanisms (counseling, antidepressants, exercise, etc). One of the things that works really well for me is writing. I’m a huge believer in using writing—whether it’s journaling, poetry, short stories, novels, etc.—as a way to help cope with depression and anxiety. What it does for me—and others—is allow us to process different situations, thoughts, and scenarios with some emotional distance. I can take some of the negative emotions inside myself, give them to another character, and let them deal with it for a while. This distance enables me to stop internalizing things and to apply logic to an emotional situation. I discovered one of my emotional triggers almost by accident when writing one of my books. And as soon as I realized what I’d written, and what my characters were doing, I had a better understanding of myself. And with that distance, I learned to recognize my own triggers before I had too much time to get sucked into the downward spiral. It’s not a cure-all by any means, but writing has given me the means to process things in a healthier way.

Do you/did you read romances as a teenager and as an adult?

Yep. I was the girl who had my nose in a book—a ROMANCE book—all through middle school and high school, up through my adulthood. I was the one whose 7th grade English teacher wanted to know if my mother knew what I was reading (the answer is yes, she absolutely did). I’d been known to have a romance novel with me at the ROLLER RINK(!) and at the football game (!). During high school I read in study hall, which taught me two things: First,  sex scene sound WAY different when read aloud by a 15-year-old boy than they do in your head; Second, in historical romances of 350-450 pages written in the early/mid-90s, there is always a sex scene on page 200. I was (and am) the lady in the office breakroom reading a different romance novel every day at lunch. It was more obvious back in the day when people could see the cover of the book, but in this age of digital, it just looks like I’m one of the many people staring at my phone.

What’s next for you as a writer?

I’ve got a couple of projects I’m really excited about. The first is a male/male light sci-fi series that takes place on a brothel star cruiser which is actually the undercover base for a secret militia. It’s tropey and fun. Definitely a romance set in space vs. a sci-fi novel with romantic elements (believe me, there’s a difference!) I have a demisexual prince, a courtesan-trained mechanic, a naïve scientist, a cynical smuggler, a pansexual prince, and a drag queen general, all bent on saving the galaxy.

Here’s the series blurb:

The SuperNova Galactic Brothel is the premier pleasure cruiser of the Su’Mar galaxy, a shining beacon in a star system at the edge of war. The elite from every star system frequent the establishment because they know Madame Nova’s courtesans and amenities are the best, bar-none. But beneath the glitzy and glamorous façade, a secret lurks—one that might be the galaxy’s last bastion of defense against the Order of Nammu.

Long thought a rumor, the Order of Nammu has been systematically destabilizing the galaxy for years—influencing, instigating, menacing—and now the galaxy is on the brink of collapse. When the Order’s operatives infiltrate SuperNova, a hidden battle station is revealed and the galaxy is thrust into war.

The three Adan brothers, princes of the planet Enkhi, are called upon to rally the galaxy’s leaders, marshaling them into war. Along the way, they fall for the unlikeliest of partners—men who are inappropriate matches for a prince, but whose love allows each brother to discover new strengths needed to overcome the threat of the Order of Nammu and save the galaxy’s inhabitants.

The second project I’m working on is a contemporary gay YA novel, which I’m pitching as the movie Juno meets Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda. It’s got a little angst, a little humor, a little romance, and a character coming to terms with the sacrifices required to be a parent—especially as an underage dad.

BLURB

A Shifter U Tale

Outfoxing their enemies will be a bear of a task.

Aspiring journalist and fox shifter David ends up with a target on his back after hacking the Moreau Initiative, the shifter world’s greatest enemy. But he won’t let that stop him from the campus tour road trip that’ll help him become the next Anderson Cooper… even if his family insists he travel with a grumpy grizzly bear bodyguard.

Buddy Brady is older, sexy, and too damn distracting for David, and as the sexual tension builds, so does the suspicion around the repeated attacks—first in Chicago, then in New York. Someone is tracking them, and all clues point to a traitor in the shifter ranks. Worst of all, they could be after David’s family….

Excerpt:

The hotel I’d chosen was… rough.

Buddy was less polite. “This place is two beers shy of a murder-suicide.”

“I didn’t take you for a snob,” I said, even as I sort of agreed with his assessment. To call the place fleabag would be giving it too much credit. “Besides,” I added, “we’re at the height of tourist season. We’re lucky to find a room anywhere, let alone one for less than a hundred bucks a night.”

“If this place is a dime more than twenty-five dollars, you’re paying too much.”

“I tried to tell you we should have kept going to Sioux Falls.” Thanks to the early start, there was plenty of daylight left, and Sioux Falls was only an hour farther down the line. Buddy had put the kibosh on that, reaching over to press the twitching muscle of my forearm. “You’ve been stretching your back for the last two hours, and twice you got a charley horse in your foot.”

So, yeah, I gave in. I’d been sore, and driving that long nonstop took a surprising amount of energy. Which is how we ended up in terrifyingly run-down motel near the interstate that smelled of smoke and desperation.

It had been a long night. Long and enlightening.

I learned two things from sharing a room with Buddy. First, he slept in soft cotton shorts and a tank top that showed exactly how broad his shoulders were. And second, he snored. The snoring didn’t even bother me, which I guess could be called a third thing I learned. Actually, the heavy breathing was oddly comforting.

I’m not exactly sure what woke me up after I’d finally fallen asleep sometime after three thirty. Maybe noise from a passing semi or a slamming door somewhere in the motel. Whatever it was, I pried my gritty eyes open and promptly squeezed them shut again. Only to open them in awe.

Buddy was… he was… holy shit, I had no words.

On the floor at the foot of his bed, he rested on his knees, his body bowed backward, hands gripping his ankles. It was… obscene? Crazy? Sexy as fuck?

And this was the exact moment my generalized awareness and attraction became straight-up perving. With the way he contorted his body, his pelvis thrust forward, and his thin cotton shorts left nothing to the imagination. He released his ankles and slowly flowed forward, reversing his arching body until his palms lay flat on the carpet in front of him. Then he lifted first one knee, then the other, until his body made a perfect inverted V, his ass on full display.

I may have drooled a little. Because, damn.

Buddy the grumpy grizzly shifter did yoga. I had no idea that a burly man working through yoga poses would be more exciting to me than a lap dance at a strip club.

“You should join me,” he said.

I’m not sure what word I meant to say, but an inarticulate grunt was my response. Because if by joining him, he meant letting me drape myself over that massive—and bendy—body, then I was all in. But… “Wait, what?”

Buddy tilted his head meeting my eyes. “Yoga. It’s good for you. Centers your mind and body.”

“Yeah, it’s not my kind of thing,” I said, trying to keep my voice and my breathing even.

His shirt fell until it bunched up at his neck, giving me a clear view of that mile-wide back, and if I looked right, I got a good shot at his hairy chest. My heartbeat picked up.

“You should consider it.” His nostrils flared, and his eyes narrowed. His right hand slipped, and he fell forward, barely catching himself before face-planting into what was undoubtedly gross carpet.

Nope, nope, nope. This wasn’t happening. I forced myself to think of what a black light would pick up in this place. The floor was probably a Pollock painting of various bodily fluids. When even that wasn’t enough to push away the heat in my blood—and loins—I jumped up. “I’m more of a runner.” In more ways than one.

During my travels, I’ve stayed in a couple of …rough…hotels. How about you? Any vivid experiences at a hotel/motel you want to share?
