Xairē! That’s ancient Greek for “Howdy.” [KHAI-rae]

Welcome to my blog tour for Becoming, Book 1 of the Dancing with the Lion duology, about the young Alexander before he became “the Great.” It’s an historical coming-of-age tale with a love story embedded.

Best known for conquering most of his known world before the ripe old age of 33, Alexander made even Julius Caesar weep (for not being him). But who was he before his meteoric rise? And how did his best friend and lover, Hephaistion, give him the emotional support needed for him to become Megalexandros (the Great Alexander)?

WHY IS HE ALEXANDROS, NOT ALEXANDER?

From the very beginning, I wanted to use Alexander’s real name. I did so for the same reasons I chose to write in his point-of-view in the first place, not in the heads of people all around him.

I want to make him real. “Alexander the Great” is a legend. Alexandros of Macedon, or really Makedon, was a living, breathing human being. That’s who I’m writing about.

Some readers may think it’s “pretentious,” or that I’m making all those weird Greek names harder. But again, I’m not writing about the legend, I’m writing about the boy. And the notion that “Alexander” is easier for English-speakers to say than “Alexandros” strikes me as rather silly. Same thing with Philip and Philippos. Now I might give you that Aristotle is easier than Aristoteles, but for the most part, the name thing affects a bare handful. If readers can handle Hephaistion and Erigyios, I think they can manage Aristoteles! I dislike underestimating or insulting my readers.

ALL these Greek names look strange to English-speakers, and a lot of folks will just gloss name. They’ll become the Eri-guy or Heph, or Leo (for Leonnatos). That’s okay.

My students love to make up nicknames in class for ancient figures, and if people think Greek names appear odd, try Suppiluliuma (a Hittite king). But so fun to say! I get my whole Ancient Near Eastern class to pronounce names together, at once, just so nobody felt stupid for having no clue how to say something that’s six syllables long. At first, they were a bit reluctant, but after the first few times, they really got into it. Suppiluliuma was dubbed “Soupy,” but I think the funniest was “Mega-bus” for Megabyzos, a Persian general.

Obviously, I don’t want to make fun of people’s names, but teaching gives me a good idea of how readers are going to see these. While on the one hand, readers can certainly handle the real Greek, I fully expect a lot of readers will shorten them in their heads. I’m cool with that. (Send me your funny nicknames for them! I love that stuff.)

Yet if readers would like to hear the names, on my website I have audiofiles of me pronouncing them. Sometimes readers can guess, but accents might be a surprise. For instance, with Alexander’s own name, as we say it al-ex-AN-der, most readers probably assume it’s al-ex-AN-dros. It’s actually a-LEX-an-dros.

So if, like me, you love language and hearing the names, pop over to the website and take a listen. Otherwise, as you read, you can pronounce/remember those suckers however works for you!

Dancing with the Lion Website:

Contains everything from cut scenes, to videoblogs of Macedonia (Northern Greece, where Alexander grew up), to audio pronunciations of those weird Greek names!

For our GIVE-AWAY, I’m going to offer something a bit different. Yes, there’s a $10 gift certificate from Riptide Publishers. BUT, for the lucky winner, you get your very own scene request. Want to see a scene in the novel from a different character’s point-of-view? Want to know what happened after a scene ended, or before it began? Or is there something you’d like to see that wasn’t in the novel? Ask for it! I’ll write it just for you.

About Dancing with the Lion: Becoming

Two boys, one heroic bond, and the molding of Greece’s greatest son.

Before he became known as Alexander the Great, he was Alexandros, the teenage son of the king of Makedon. Rather than living a life of luxury, as prince he has to be better and learn faster than his peers, tackling problems without any help. One such problem involves his increasingly complicated feelings for his new companion, Hephaistion.

When Alexandros and Hephaistion go to study under the philosopher Aristoteles, their evolving relationship becomes even harder to navigate. Strength, competition, and status define one’s fate in their world—a world that seems to have little room for the tenderness growing between them.

Alexandros is expected to command, not to crave the warmth of friendship with an equal. In a kingdom where his shrewd mother and sister are deemed inferior for their sex, and his love for Hephaistion could be seen as submission to an older boy, Alexandros longs to be a human being when everyone but Hephaistion just wants him to be a king.

Now available from Riptide Publishing and where ebooks are sold!

About Jeanne Reames

Jeanne Reames has been scribbling fiction since 6th grade, when her “write a sentence with this vocabulary word” turned into paragraphs, then into stories…and her teacher let her get away with it—even encouraged her! But she wears a few other hats, too, including history professor, graduate program chair, and director of the Ancient Mediterranean Studies Program at her university. She’s written academic articles about Alexander and ancient Macedonia, and does her best to interest undergrads in Greek history by teaching them (et al.) to swear in ancient Greek.

Giveaway

One lucky person will win a $10 voucher for Riptide. But this giveaway also includes something much more personal:

Your very own SCENE.

I’ve committed to write, for the give-away winner, a scene of her/his/their choice.

Would you like to see X scene described from a different character’s POV (point-of-view)?

Or would you like to know what happened just before X scene, or right after?

Or maybe there’s something I didn’t write about at all, but you’d like me to write it for you?

There are some parameters, especially for the third category (write a scene not included). The request is subject to my agreement that the characters would engage in the requested behavior. So keep that in mind. (I wouldn’t write a scene wherein Alexander beat his dog, for instance.)

But I look forward to the winner’s scene challenge!

I have some “cuts scenes” as well as “missing scenes” (in the year between the novels) that will be available on my website (https://jeannereames.net/Dancing_with_the_Lion/cut_scenes.html) after July 1st

When done, this one will join them.

Each tour stop is a chance to enter by leaving a comment below. Entries close at midnight, Eastern time, on June 6, 2019. Contest is NOT restricted to U.S. entries. Thanks for following along, and don’t forget to leave your contact info!

Jesse’s only priority in life is protecting the people he loves, so he’s determined to see Rowan Harbor’s wards rebuilt. There’s just one problem: they’re missing an ingredient that can’t be ordered online.

Jesse volunteers to search for the missing component in the realm of the fae, but his boyfriend, Sean, isn’t letting him go alone. The town has an enemy among the fae, so they’ll need to keep a low profile. Along their way, they find unexpected allies, surprising enemies, and a whole host of problems.

The journey is a test of their endurance, but also of their relationship and their faith in each other. Can they find what they need and get back home in one piece in time for the summer solstice?

Sam wrote her first fantasy epic with her best friend when she was ten. Like almost any epic fiction written by a ten year old, it was awful. She likes to think she’s improved since then, if only because she has better handwriting now.

If she’s not writing, she’s almost certainly either reading or lost down a Wikipedia rabbit hole while pretending to research for a novel.

A MelanieM Release Day Review:Come Back Around (Leaning N #4) by B.A. Tortuga

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Can two divorced dads get a second chance at a redneck wedding?

When Reid Porter agrees to be his best friend’s man of honor, he never considers that his ex, Mateo, will be there too. Which is ridiculous, because Jennifer is marrying Mat’s brother. Reid would never let Jen down, though, so he finds himself at the Leaning N Ranch with his two daughters and a whole lot of baggage about seeing Mat again.

Mat loves his baby brother and would do anything for him, including face the love of his life, whom he’s sure has moved on. When he and Reid come face-to-face after more than two years apart, they realize they’ve never let go. Now they have to do what they never could before—balance work, home, and children, while finding a way to come back around to each other’s love.

The Leaning N series is a sweet, heartwarming series of contemporary  romances centered around a family ranch that caters to events, especially weddings.   There is a core couple and ranch “family” we have come to love, including chef Geoff that started with the first story, and they form a firm foundation for every book that follows.  That would be when an event pulls together what will become the couple of the story.  It’s usually a wedding (Mason the wedding planner is another recurring character).

And that’s the format here.  A brother and a best friend are getting married at the Leaning N and that’s pulling back together the exs of a bitter divorce , along with their kids. And Inlaws.  One is the brother of the man getting married, the other the best friend of the bride.  And neither has seen the other for years.

BA Tortuga does hurt and miscommunication really well and both are on the main stage here with Reid and Mateo.  It wasn’t cheating that drove them apart but pride, insecurity, and lack of time together when Mateo spent 24/7 at his office, neglecting his family and his health.  Now they have a second chance, another great staple in BA Tortuga’s stories, and it works beautifully.

Mostly because the author is able to let us see that the men care deeply about each other and their family.  That it’s fear, insecurity, and miscommunication that tore them apart and holding them there now.  And like adults, it’s talking that starts to bring them back together.  They acknowledge that sex, now and then is great and never the issue, but they need to work out more.

It wonderful and often entertaining if potentially (and realistically painful) to see what it take to bring all the family back on board.  That’s all the inlaws who had taken sides here.

A funny and favorite element here?  That would be the kids and their interaction with Geoff, the chef.  He has been a consistent love of mine among the men of the Leaning N and I’m still hoping for him to get his own HEA.  While staying at the Leaning N of course!

Looking for your next heartwarmer of a love story?  I recommend Come Back Around (Leaning N #4) by B.A. Tortuga.  And the entire series.  Check them all out today.

Cover Artist: Alexandria Corza.  I guest that sort of works.  But i would have preferred more of the Leaning N backdrop as well.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have BA Tortuga here today with an excerpt from her new story Come Back Around.  Welcome, BA.

Hey, y’all! I’m BA Tortuga, resident redneck and cowboy fanatic. Come Back Around is the fourth in the Leaning N Series in the Dreamspun line. It’s the story of two estranged dads, a wedding, two little girls, and the universe conspiring to bring a family together.

I love exploring the more traditional dynamics about parents in a love story, and Mat and Reid didn’t disappoint me at all.

***

Mat took the girls to supper, even though all he wanted to do was stuff them in his SUV and run.

Fuck, it was good to hold them and listen to them laugh.

At dinner, though, they swarmed over Alejandro, leaving Mat nothing to do but eat his amazing mashed potatoes and watch Reid.

Reid didn’t eat a bite; he just drank a glass of pinot and sat back in the corner, texting someone. Who? A new lover? Why hadn’t Reid brought the new guy here?

He needed to eat. Reid looked pale and tired. Damn it.

Jennifer sat down next to him. “God, those look good.”

“You want some? There’s an enormous bowl.” He had a feeling the chef, Geoff, loved special requests.

“I’m not allowed to eat until after the ceremony. Elena will kill me if I don’t fit in my dress.”

“Not allowed to eat?” That seemed barbaric. “Man, I’m glad I didn’t have to wear a dress.”

“Yeah, it’s overrated, this dress thing. Alejandro is loving the attention from his nieces.”

“They adore him.” He met her pretty green eyes. “Thanks for getting them here.”

“Reid never once suggested that they not come.”

“Did he know I would be here, though?” He laughed, but it sounded hollow to his own ears. “Don’t. I know he had to. It’s Alejandro’s wedding too. I’m just being an ass. I could sneak you a granola bar later.”

She began to chuckle; then that turned into laughter. He shot her a look, and she opened her purse. In it were three granola bars—one with Lucia’s name, one with Daniela’s, and the third with Reid’s.

“Well, your people love you, kiddo.” He winked at her, laughing helplessly too.

“You all do. No question.” She closed her purse and snuck a bite of his potatoes. “Are y’all going to let Patricia eat him?”

“What?” His mama would never do that. He widened his eyes hugely, going for innocent, which he knew wouldn’t work. “I might let her chew a bit, just for keeping things from me.”

“Huh?”

Now he turned serious. “He got a nanny, Jen. Full-time. He’s supposed to disclose stuff like that. His custody depends on him having more time to take care of them. You know that’s the only reason I didn’t fight harder for at least split time.”

“So he was supposed to turn Pottery Barn down? Williams Sonoma? Come on now, after you ragged his ass and accused him of being worthless? He’s been busting his ass doing everything.”

“I never said he was worthless. Not once.” He was grinding out the words through gritted teeth, but he knew what he’d said. “When he accused me of avoiding him and the kids by working too much, I told him if he worked harder maybe I could stay home more. Sue me.”

“Hey.” A hand landed on his shoulder and Jennifer’s. “Y’all stop it. This wedding isn’t about me. I’ll see you at the rehearsal, honey. I’m going to put the girls to bed.” Reid kissed Jennifer’s head. “Night, honey. I love you.”

“Night.” Jennifer gave him a tiny smile. “Sorry, Mat. I’ll get out of your hair.”

He pushed his potatoes toward her. “No, I have work to do. Have at ’em.” He wanted to catch the girls and kiss them good night.

She started to argue, but the girls were already on the move, Reid talking hard to them. Hell, he had to put on a burst of speed to catch up, and honestly he didn’t want Reid telling the girls he wasn’t coming or something.

“…and after bath time, I’ll see if Papi can come and read us a book, give nighttime sugars, okay? He needs to finish his supper or his belly will hurt.”

Oh. He stopped dead, not wanting the kids to see he’d been trailing them. That was really decent. Seriously.

***

Much love, y’all.

When a single dad and a newly outed veterinarian meet by chance, it takes red-cheeked conversations, a tentative friendship, and the willingness to put their hearts on the line to show these men they’re made for each other.

Single dad Davis Jackson is busy balancing his coffee shop and being the best dad he can be. That doesn’t mean he’s not lonely. After a fumbling encounter with a man who looks as gorgeous as he does unhappy, Davis is left wondering who the mystery man is.

All Davis knows is that he has never felt such an instant attraction to anyone before, but when he discovers the brown-eyed man’s identity, it’s clear the recently out-of-the-closet veterinarian is lost and quite possibly broken.

A swoon-worthy low-angst stand-alone contemporary M/M romance featuring characters from LET ME SHOW YOU.

Excerpt

I cleared my throat, suddenly aware I’d stayed quiet for a few seconds too long. “Hey.” My voice was gravelly and sounded unnaturally deep.

The guy paused in front of me, his hands dipping into his jeans pockets. He was quiet for a beat, seeming to contemplate what to say.

“You know Rex then?”

I nodded and then took a glance at the large head resting on my lap. With a small nod, I smiled. “Yeah. He finally likes me, so I’m taking it as a win that we’re friends.”

The brown-eyed man’s head tilted slightly, his gaze scanning my face a moment before his eyes returned to mine. “So you’re a friend of Carter’s?”

A humorless snort burst free, not enough to startle Rex, but enough for the guy to raise his brows. I cleared my throat again, not especially liking the fact that it seemed to be closing up and becoming uncomfortably dry in front of this guy. “Well, sort of. We used to work together.”

“Not anymore?”

I bit back the bitter retort dancing on my tongue, tempted to ask if that wasn’t what “used to” explicitly meant. There was no need for me to be so defensive or any bigger of an asshole than I already had a reputation for being.

“Nope. Just trying to figure out my next move.” I clamped my mouth shut, wondering why I’d shared so much. He sat on the lounger beside me, stopping my analysis. “Please, take a seat.” Damn, I really needed to learn to keep my mouth shut and stop being a dickhead. “Sorry.” I threw him a small grimace, noticing both of his perfectly arched brows were lifted, his attention solely on me. There was also a small smile on his lips. I was positive I saw it twitch.

“Hey, I can leave.”

Though, he stayed put, making no indication he planned on moving. He didn’t even shrug or twitch as he spoke.

While solitude had been what I’d craved, I was smart enough to recognize that just maybe not being alone was a good thing. Being alone, I was discovering, was not helpful at all. All it did was give me too much time with my thoughts. And that had a habit of screwing with my head. While I’d sought the quiet, especially since my blowout with Carter a while back, I recognized how dangerous isolation could be. Loneliness was a slippery slope.

LA Bryce on a Mother’s love for Romance Books, and her new release ‘Love, Trust and Secrets’ by LA Bryce (giveaway)

My Secret Is Out. I’m Not Half As Good as My Mom Was.

My first taste of Romance was my mother’s Romance book collection. She had five boxes (the kind that held 30 dozen eggs each) filled with books, all Romance, most by Barbara Cartland.

When I was 11 year’s old, my girlfriend’s Girl Scout troop held a yard sale. I’d decided the perfect items for me to contribute were the boxes of books in the spare room that no one ever read. And of course, why would I ask if it was okay for me to take them? Remember, no one read them anyway.

So with my friend and her mom’s help, I’d dragged them to the bank parking lot where the sale was held and proceeded to sell each book for $.05. Needless to say, the books were the quickest selling items that day. And when my mother showed up a few hours later, everyone excitedly shared with her the news of how well her books had sold.

Now a little backstory…my mom was AWESOME—the type of woman who would go with the flow. She just wanted to make those around her happy, even if it sacrificed some of her own happiness. One example was when the four kids (my sister, two brothers, and me) all went to our in-law’s for Thanksgiving (or pretty much any holiday) instead of staying home with her. Instead of guilting us into coming to her, or making us feel bad we didn’t, she would make a Thanksgiving feast a week earlier so we could all celebrate together.

Flashback to the sale…it wasn’t what she’d said or even that she’d done anything when she heard her books were gone. It had been more of just an eye twitch. But I’d known immediately something was very wrong. There was an electricity in the air. Like the coming of a Tornado. But being the person she was, she hadn’t created a scene or gotten angry and walked away. Instead, she said she was glad she was able to help contribute something that brought the much-needed money to the troop. Then even on the way home, instead of yelling or threatening to take something of mine that I loved, she asked why I had taken the books. I explained that I just wanted to bring something to the sale. When I’d finished, she’d calmly told me to make sure that if I wanted to take something next time to please be sure to ask first.

It was about twenty years after that I’d realized my mother should have been nominated for sainthood. It’d taken me that long to truly understand what I’d done. I had taken my mom’s ability of a break from taking care of the kids and my dad. I had taken her chance to see faraway lands without leaving the house. I had taken her way of getting a little happily ever after, whenever she’d felt she’d needed it. And all I can say now is I wish I could be even half as good of a mother as she was, because I know in no uncertain terms, if my kids ever touched even one of my books, there would be yelling, punishment, and possibly even some bloodshed.

If my mom were still alive today, I’d say, “Mom, I love you, and I’m genuinely sorry.”

For a man on the run, is finding love a good enough reason to stay? And for a man who doesn’t want to leave, is a secret enough reason to walk away?

Even though a bad situation brings Tyler and Jarod together, they quickly find the good in their relationship. But when Tyler falls in love and finds the feelings returned, he’s forced to question if his and Jarod’s relationship is worth risking his freedom, his life, and their hearts.

Jarod knows Tyler is hiding something, but his fear of scaring Tyler away has him accepting Tyler’s silence. But instead of keeping Tyler close, Jarod’s avoidance ultimately leads to Tyler being taken away, leaving Jarod clueless and unable to help the man he loves.

Love, Trust, and Secrets is a story whose main focus is the love between two men and all the trial and tribulations that come with that love.

About The Author

I’ve been telling stories for as long as I can remember; my parents tell me it’s been going on even further back than that and not always at the appropriate times. Now I choose to use my gift for good.
I enjoy meeting new people, even if they’re only in my head.

I believe love comes in all different packages and each should be wrapped in a ribbon and cherished.

I’m currently working on a contemporary romance with a splash of suspense. I get a thrill coming up with unexpected and usually dangerous situations for my characters to be in and then thinking of extraordinary ways for them to escape with outcomes that deviate from the expected.

I live with my family in the Northeast where we enjoy white winters, balmy summers, a spring flurried with fragrant flowers, and a fall filled with piles of leaves to dive in to. Our small town offers the old world charm of knowing your neighbor and its location enables us to take off for dinner in a city known for its beautiful skyline or to an afternoon playing in the sand of some of the best beaches found in the United States.

For me, writing is relaxation for the soul and reading is its nourishment.

A Caryn Release Day Review: The Importance of Being Kevin by Steven Harper

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Slow start, strong finish.

I have to admit I did not read the blurb as closely as I should have, so I was surprised to discover one of the MCs was only 16 years old.  I think I read “probation officer” and automatically thought adult.  The fact that this is a story involving high schoolers makes it a little distressing, as it really covers some seriously dark and violent topics – I don’t believe the blurb gave adequate warning – that are not my usual cup of tea, especially at this age, and I’m sure that colored my feelings about the book, and this review.  My ambivalence towards the violence made it difficult to really get into the book, but by the end, the author wrapped it all up in a way that made me think, ahh, now I get it!  So, ultimately satisfying despite that ambivalence early on.

The story began with 16 year old Kevin Devereaux trying out for a summer production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest.  He’d never acted before, and only tried out because his probation officer made doing something productive during the summer a condition of staying out of juvie.  Kevin was shocked to find not only did he make it in, but he was cast as Algy, one of the leads.  The other lead was scored by Peter Finn, a 19 year old theater veteran who was everything Kevin was not – confident, good looking, wealthy – and the two boys discovered immediately that not only were they both gay, but they were attracted to each other.  For Peter, those feelings came naturally, but Kevin had so many hang ups about himself that he had a great deal of trouble accepting that maybe finding a boyfriend really could be just that easy.

But just after their first meeting, just after their first kiss – Kevin became the victim of a terrible assault.

I have to admit, I was shocked.  I just wasn’t expecting the violence.  And then the reasons why Kevin was on probation in the first place, and why his father was in prison, also came out, along with the dark aspects of Kevin’s personality:  his temper, his anger, and his inability to control them.  Suddenly, I wasn’t sure what to think of him.  I had a hard time reconciling Kevin’s sweet, shy, insecure side with his violent actions and thoughts.  And I really felt that way pretty much all the way until the end last few chapters of the book, which kept me from truly identifying with the romance between the two boys until the end.  Both Kevin and Peter grew and matured in significant ways due to the trauma they each experienced during the summer, and that character growth is what made this better than a 3 star read for me.  There is also a wonderful scene with Kevin’s first exposure to other queer youth that was so heartwarming, and just gave me all the feels.

The way the author wove in quotes from Wilde’s play to reflect exactly what was going on with the MCs was very clever, especially as the plot of the book does not reflect the plot of the play.  I was also extremely pleased that Kevin rarely fell into the TSTL trap of not telling people what was going on, or witholding important information from them – at least not for too long anyway – that I have seen in other books addressing similar topics and relationship inequalities.  Peter also kept important information from Kevin at first, but revealing his true identity to Kevin seemed like it came at the appropriate time (and that was the only significant parallel with the play!).  Kevin’s father turned into a fairly complex man who was able to truly understand and support Kevin, and was an excellent secondary character.  The villain, however, was too simplistic, and Peter’s parents were mostly caricatures.

Overall, a really good book.  And I’m very glad I stuck with it despite being a bit surprised by the age of the MCs.

Cover art by Aaron Anderson was exactly what the blurb should have been – a portrait of a deeply troubled young man.

A MelanieM Review: Save the Date (Harrisburg Railers #9) by R.J. Scott and V.L. Locey

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

Ever since he first set foot in Harrisburg, Tennant’s life has been a rollercoaster. Ups and downs too numerous to mention, hard knocks and championship rings. Through all of those monumental moments, one thing has been a constant for him, Jared Madsen. Now that their wedding day is drawing nearer, Ten is seriously considering eloping. He would, if not for his mother, his father, his brothers, the wedding planner, the guests, the cake, the press, and the team. Oh, and then there’s his best friend, who is vying for the job of ringmaster of the wedding circus. Would sneaking off during the night with Jared and skipping to the honeymoon part of the festivities really be all that bad?

When Jared proposed to Ten, he imagined a quiet wedding, on a beach somewhere, with family, and maybe the team. But life gets complicated with Ten’s warring brothers, a Russian goalie with a love of sequins, and a bachelor party organized by Adler. When Trent sends them a wedding planner, every spare hour is filled with choosing invitations, cake tasting, and finding a rose in the perfect shade of green. Add in Layton organizing a press conference, and suddenly their private wedding is destined to become a media sensation. Is it wrong to think seriously about kidnapping Ten and spiriting him away to a small deserted island?

Adler organizing the bachelor party, Trent supplying the wedding planner, and Stan writing a speech. What can possibly go wrong?

I can’t think of a better way to end this amazing series than with an all inclusive wedding!  Yes, Ten and Jared get married with all our favorite couples from over the series (and one from the connected Owatonna U books) gathered to celebrate their union.  And the authors putting their closure to the run of stories about these remarkable bunch of wonderful men,

How I will miss them so.

One of the questions that continues to pop up when asked about this series is who is your favorite character.  I have to admit my answer is always Stan.  Stan that irrepressible, larger than life Russian goalie is someone I’ve kept close to my heart and he’s in full force as one of the couple’s best (if a little scary over the tpp Elvis loving) best friends.  Stan, his hockey other half husband Erik and their brood …well, I’m not letting them go.  Nope, Not ready.

Same goes for the main couple who started this series rolling.  Tennant and Jared.  What a journey they’ve been on!  And we have been there every step of the way.  From their first meeting, through all the angst and coming out, the romance and the relationship, now culminating in their marriage.  It’s been a joy and a sexy, entertaining ride through nine stories, even when they weren’t the main couple, Ten and Jared were always there, a solid foundation and enduring framework for each new man and couple to be.

Even now as my mind wanders through all the marvelous couples who’ve touched me in every story, Layton and Adler (oh my Adler), bad boy Dieter and figure skater Trent (how I heart them both and Trent’s grandmother), Stan my goalie man and his heart and winger husband Erik (all their brood tooI), Max of his last chances,  and Ben with his rescue dogs, bu goalie Bryan and tattoo artist Gatlin, every couple is one that I treasure.  And they are all here for the wedding.

True to form, the authors bring as much humor to the occasion as they do solemnity and beauty.  Whether it’s in the attire Stan is wearing or the emotional speeches everyone is giving or just the sheer overwhelming sentiment of the location and celebration of the union of these two men everyone there (and the people reading ) love so much, the impact of the story comes through loud and clear.

Yes, I had sniffles.

There are stories in the series…Neutral Zone (a heartbreaker) and Hat Trick (Stan goes to Russia) that stand out from the rest in that they don’t feature a couple coming together but an established couple taking another sort of journey or battle together.  It’s fitting they preceded Save the Date.  You need the maelstrom to appreciate the calm, and heady safety of arriving into your port of home.  That’s what this story is.  Tennant and Jared finally getting that moment of calm, of home and forever after.  And I love every word of it.

If you are a fan of this couple and series, you will too. Although i imagine you’ve already read your way through the story.  But if you’re new to the series, I can’t recommend it highly enough.  I have listed them all below.  Read them in the order they are listed for the best reading experience.  Enjoy!  I will be rereading the series as these men feel like friends and you never let friends go.

An Alisa Release Day Review: Fox Hunt (Shifter U #4) by J. Leigh Bailey

Rating:  3.5 stars out of 5

Outfoxing their enemies will be a bear of a task.

Aspiring journalist and fox shifter David ends up with a target on his back after hacking the Moreau Initiative, the shifter world’s greatest enemy. But he won’t let that stop him from the campus tour road trip that’ll help him become the next Anderson Cooper… even if his family insists he travel with a grumpy grizzly bear bodyguard.

Buddy Brady is older, sexy, and too damn distracting for David, and as the sexual tension builds, so does the suspicion around the repeated attacks—first in Chicago, then in New York. Someone is tracking them, and all clues point to a traitor in the shifter ranks. Worst of all, they could be after David’s family….

This was a good story, I haven’t read any other the other Shifter U stories and other than some side references I don’t think it took away from enjoying this book.  David has gotten himself into a bit of a pickle and forced to have a bodyguard while visiting grad schools.  Buddy is a misunderstood, not necessarily in a bad way, man and has never really gotten the chance to do what he has always wanted.

Unfortunately for a book over 200 pages I don’t have much to say, so much of this book was their trips to the colleges with David trying to downplay their danger and shrug off any of the incidents that happen.  Though the big one when they figure out who the spy is finally send him back home.  The big reveal and “battle” didn’t really live up to the big build up for me.

I felt bad for David and how he was feeling about how his family treats him, feeling like the outcast or screw-up is never fun.  Now Buddy has built a nice life for himself but I liked that David was able to get him to open up about the life he would like.  These two are sweet together and they had to of liked each other previously and just didn’t say anything for how awkward their interactions quickly got but David following his dreams gives Buddy the boost to try for his too.

I love the cover art by Aaron Anderson is nice but doesn’t connect with how I viewed either characters.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Release Day Review: Raze (Riven #3) by Roan Parrish

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Felix Rainey is a caretaker. The eldest of five children, he’s been caring for his siblings, cooking and assisting his mother with household tasks, and working to put in money to support his single-parent family since he was a child. He and his sister Sofia are besties. Closest in age, the duo are now living together while Sofia gets her degree and Felix works to support her. When they walk into a bar to sing a duet on karaoke night, they have no idea their lives are about to change.

Huey has worked to stay clean and sober for over ten years. Caleb’s sponsor, we first met Huey in Riven. His life revolves around his meetings, his sponsees, and the bar he owns. He’s also very rigid in the control he maintains over himself as he adheres to a strict schedule of gym activities, shopping, contact with those he sponsors, and more, including listening to podcasts on every topic known to man. He also uses a magic marker to write daily quotations on his abdomen to help reinforce the positives in his life. In a word, he’s rigid in his control. And then, in steps Felix with Sofia to sing a duet on karaoke night—a duet of one of Riven’s songs. And they nail it!

Huey’s world is turned upside down as the sweet, gorgeous young man seems more interested in him than in meeting Theo Decker, the famous rock musician and former lead singer with Riven. Nevertheless, Huey arranges a meeting, which ultimately turns out much different from what he envisions. The bottom line, however, is that he’s left with a crush on a young cutie and that cutie seems to be attracted to him. Now, what should he do about it?

Like others in this series, what happens along the way makes for a complex and beautiful love story. The author’s treatment of addiction, recovery, and triggers in this book is just as good as in the other stories, but with a difference. This time, the focus is on the sponsor, and along the way, we learn that Huey has lost sight of his own needs. The love and support he receives from Felix goes a long way toward helping him release some of his old fears and controlling behaviors and embrace a new way forward, even though the road to this revelation is fraught with ups and downs of heartache and pain.

I struggled a bit with this book, unlike the others in the series, because I had a hard time relating to Huey. The stern, quiet man was not an easy character to warm up to. However, later in the story, when I got to know the person behind the façadethe man whose real name is DaneI was sold.

Felix was the type of character I love, possibly because I can relate to being the oldest and taking on the role of family caretaker. He rarely lost his temper with Dane, mostly because he didn’t feel secure in their relationship and therefore felt unworthy, so why get angry. It’s not until Felix makes strides in his own personal growth that we see the two moving toward each other emotionally, and we can see a happy ending as their outcome.

So, in summary, both characters are different from the norm or what I expect to be the normand often difficult to like, never mind love. But by sticking to the story and being open to their emotional growth, readers will be rewarded with a very satisfying love story.

The cover by Makeready Designs is similar to the cover of Riven and Rend with the background mostly solid, in mauve this time, and a large cutout title showing the character looking through.
