A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audiobook Review: Open Road by M.J. O’Shea and Robbie D (Narrator)

Rating: 1 star for the audiobook and 4.5 stars for the e-book—overall 4 stars

open-road-audiobookI was asked to review the audiobook edition of this story, but I have to say up front that I had to DNF it within the first hour. I couldn’t stand the voices the narrator was using. They were so over-the-top flamboyant and campy that I felt they were insulting to my friends who are gay. They fed a stereotype that I oppose using. So, the narration didn’t deserve more than one star.

That being said, I’ve enjoyed MJ O’Shea’s work in the past, and the premise of this story was intriguing so I went to the e-book copy I had previously purchased and was unread in my “TBR library,” and I’m so glad I did because this story was a wonderful love story between two men who’ve been friends all their lives, and slowly but surely, become lovers over the course of their “road trip” together.

On his thirtieth birthday, Angus is dumped by his lover of ten years, and it sets him off on a bender that becomes so bad he loses both his job and his apartment. It isn’t until he finally checks on him that his BFF, Reece, takes matters into his own hands. Feeling guilty because he should have realized silence from Angus signaled something was very wrong, Reece not only makes plans to move Angus in with him, he also makes the arrangements to take Angus away for a few days.

The thin, wan ghostly appearance of his BFF is shocking enough, but add to that the fact that the usually bright and bubbly Angus isn’t even speaking, and Reece knows he’ll need all the patience in the world to help the man he secretly loves back to his former state. Reece would do anything for Angus, and this story shows just how much he does. It also reveals the journey Angus has to make to come back from the depths of despair. Deciding to extend their initial trip from Oregon to California by a few more days, the two men head to Vegas. Another extension takes them to New Orleans, and so it goes as they make their way across country.

Angus is living on his savings from his former job, but Reece is a book editor and is financing most of the trip as well as working remotely on his laptop once in a while. And this is the only quirk I had with the story. I’m an editor, and to be honest, in my experience, editors don’t earn enough to make it across the state—never mind the country! LOL

Regardless, the story is so wonderful that I can be kind and overlook that little issue. These men are so endearing—Reece so strong and supportive and Angus so sweet and adorable. It’s a match made in heaven—or by a romance author. If you are interested in friends-to-lovers romances, or simply enjoy a sweet MM romance, by all means, pick this up. Just make sure you do it in e-book, not audio.
~~~~~
The cover art by L.C. Chase depicts a road fading into the distance with a muscular man in sleeveless T-shirt staring off toward the end. Very appropriate for this story.
✒︎
Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Meg Bawden here today talking about her latest release in the States of Love series from Dreamspinner Press, Rushing Love. Welcome, Meg!
✒︎
Hello, hello! My name is Meg Bawden and I’m on Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words to celebrate the release of my new book, Rushing Love, which comes out today! Woot!
Rushing Love is a M/M romance story set in South Dakota, USA. I wrote it for the States of Love line from Dreamspinner Press and I can’t wait for its release. I had so much fun writing it and I can’t wait to share it with you. Please allow me to share the blurb with you:
After a devastating break-up with the man he thought he’d spend his life with, Flynn Webb takes a holiday to a South Dakota dude ranch. It’s something completely different from anything he’s done before, and it helps that it’s as far away from his ex as possible. Trapped in his own depressive thoughts, Flynn is surprised to meet Grayson Harland. Not only is Grayson a sexy cowboy—one fifteen years younger—but he’s the most charming man Flynn has ever met.
Flynn doesn’t have much experience with being seduced, and he has even less with guys like Grayson taking an interest in him—and Grayson is definitely interested. What begins as a fling while visiting iconic South Dakota sights soon develops the potential for much more. But Flynn is afraid that falling in love again so soon—and with a man so much younger—will lead only to another catastrophic heartbreak. Luckily for them both, Grayson isn’t giving up without a fight.
To celebrate the release, I’m going to be answer some interview questions! 😀
Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Interview Questions
How much of yourself goes into a character?
I think each character has a part of the author within them. Whether it be an actual trait, the way they speak, the way they dress, or even a personality trait that the author wishes they had. For me, I’d love to be as confident as Grayson. While I am not, I made him that way because it’s something I don’t have and would love to. Whereas, my character Flynn, has my shyness and my lack of confidence. While I don’t share a similar history to Flynn, I did give him these traits because I wanted them to be a result from his past.  I think all characters, like humans in real life, are who they are because of what they’ve been through to get to that point in their life.
Do you feel there’s a tight line between Mary Sue or should I say Gary Stu and using your own experiences to create a character?
I definitely think there is a fine line between a Gary Stu and a character that’s real. It’s very difficult, as a writer, when you create a character because it is only natural to want everything to be perfect for them. When I write, I’m dreaming of a world where everything works out just fine. I’m dreaming of a world that I would love to be a part of. And because these characters are an extension of me, I’d love them to be perfect and happy. But let’s be honest, everyone wants perfection, right? You want to be that right weight or have perfect skin or beautiful hair. You want to be charitable, but rich, and very intelligent.
As an author, we have to remember that if we want readers to relate to our characters, they can’t be perfect. Perfect is boring. Readers want to see a happy-ever-after for characters that are like them. So, I give my boys and girls a quirk to make them not perfect. For Flynn, he’s shy and has a lack of confidence. He has type 1 diabetes and he’s a bit awkward at times. He’s always must thoroughly think about things before he does it and he hates that about himself.
And for Grayson, while he’s handsome and muscular, with the looks of a perfect specimen, he’s not perfect either. He has no filter and that annoys himself sometimes. He says things without thinking, the opposite of Flynn. He doesn’t watch TV (*Gasp* No TV? What kind of human being is he??? How can he and Flynn Netflix and chill??) and doesn’t understand some references that Flynn mentions.
So yes, they both have negatives and these realistic traits come from understanding people around you. As I began to write this story, these characters told me their negatives. They shared what they hated about themselves and I revelled in it. Putting certain aspects about a character into the story makes it more interesting. And I had fun with them! 🙂
Does research play a role into choosing which genre you write?  Do you enjoy research or prefer making up your worlds and cultures?
Yes and No. I write in many different genres and I usually like writing science fiction or paranormal because I can make up worlds and I already know a lot about the beings that are in that world. However, I do occasionally stick with contemporary, wherein depending on where the story is set, I do have to do some research. For Rushing Love, I definitely did research. I’ve never been to South Dakota, so I used friends’ knowledge, as well as watched youtube videos and researched on google.
Do you like HFN or HEA? And why?
I prefer a happy ever after, mostly because I’m a big old romantic and I like knowing that they spend the rest of their lives together. I’ve had plenty of good relationship role models in my life, from my nan and pop, to my mum and dad, and all I ever see in my stories is the love that lasts a lifetime.
How do you feel about the ebook format and where do you see it going?
I think there are positives and negatives to eBook format. While it’s inexpensive, thus allowing readers to buy and store more books, it also enables pirates to steal and share an author’s work. As it is, authors don’t get very much money and these pirates threaten their livelihood. But saying that, pirates would probably have never bought the book in paperback anyway. I think paperback still has buyers though, because there is something magical about holding a book in your hands, especially one of your favourites. So I believe eBooks and paperbacks can co-exist.
How do you choose your covers?  (curious on my part)
As a cover artist myself, I usually have an idea of what I want in my head. But at the same time, I don’t want to impede on an artist’s work, so I usually give the cover designer general pictures that I’m interested in, like characters and locations, and I let them run with their creative flow. And quite often, they’re right on the money. 🙂
Do you have a favorite among your own stories?  And why?
I think it’s hard for me to choose a favourite. I don’t have very many published works yet and I think they are all a favourite to me. Each story is a part of the author, so each one is special to them. And there is always something I wished I could change after the story is published. Lol. But they are perfect the way they are because that is what you wrote—what you wanted to say.
What’s next for you as an author?
So many things! Lol. I have so many works I want to finish, but at the moment, my priority is my Zombieville #2. I’m having enough zombie dreams to encourage me to finish it. I want to finish the series by the end of this year. As well as that, I’m working on a M/F story that I’m also hoping to finish soon, as well as plenty of others. As for attending events, I will be at Riveting Reads, which is held in Brisbane, Australia in October 😀
An Alisa Release Day Review: Rushing Love (States of Love) by Meg Bawden
Rating:  4 stars out of 5
rushing-love-by-meg-bawdenAfter a devastating breakup with the man he thought he’d spend his life with, Flynn Webb takes a vacation to a South Dakota dude ranch. It’s something completely different from anything he’s done before, and it helps that it’s as far away from his ex as possible. Trapped in his own depressive thoughts, Flynn is surprised to meet Grayson Harland. Not only is Grayson a sexy cowboy—one fifteen years younger—but he’s the most charming man Flynn has ever met.
But Flynn is afraid that falling in love again so soon—and with a man so much younger—will lead only to another catastrophic heartbreak. Luckily for them both, Grayson isn’t giving up without a fight.
This was such a sweet story.  Flynn’s life is thrown completely off balance by his breakup with his partner of nineteen years.  Despite his age he is completely innocent to relationships and dating having been with he same person since high school, but Grayson is determined to show him that despite their age difference they are meant to be together.
Flynn decides to take this vacation to get away from his troubles for awhile, when Grayson starts to pursue him he knows he needs to stand his ground and stay away from the younger man.  I loved seeing Flynn’s defenses soften as Grayson helps to take care of him after he is injured.  Even though they have an age difference their personalities fit together perfectly.
Cover art by Brooke Albrecht is nice and gives a good view of the setting for the story.
A Jeri Release Day Review: Off Stage (Off Stage #1-2) by Jaime Samms
Rating: 2.5 stars out of 5
off-stage-sets-one-two-by-jaime-sammsI’m sorry, but this was a giant jumbled mess. These books were previously released separately, but now are together as an “anthology”. I don’t think they were re-edited. If they were, they need to be re-edited again. And then again.
Damian is the lead singer of “Firefly”, a grunge band that was a runner up on a tv reality show. Because that wasn’t their big break, they are still trying to make it big. But then a big time country music agent discovers them and takes them on. But the band is imploding.
Damian and Lenny are best friends- lead singer and guitarist in the band. But they have a volatile and at time violent relationship. Apparently they are both subs and need guidance. Lenny takes a leave of absence from the band because his new Dom, Vance, basically told him to. Damian stays with the band, but lives with their agent as  his sub. Even though this agent has not only never had a sub, but has never been a dom before.
There is WAY too much going on in this book(s). So many complicated relationships to follow that none of them really get the time and attention that they deserve. They needed to go deeper into WHY things are going on. Damian does drugs, then he doesn’t. Heroin in fact. Pretty sure that isn’t something you can just start and stop on a whim. Lenny had an abusive boyfriend, but is totally abusive to his best friend Damian- who just takes it.
The rest of the band apparently doesn’t see what is right under their noses. They are ready to throw Damian out of the band. Then they want to throw Lenny out. Two other band mates hook up- one may or may not be trans as it got a two sentence mention.
The book is filled with inconsistencies, way more information that is needed, long run on sentences and giant time jumps. Besides the fact that the BDSM element is so bad, any real dom or sub would cringe and run to read that “other” famous BDSM series for some normalcy.
This could be a good book(s). It needs a good beta reader or two and a series edit.
Cover art by Paul Richmond is a combination of the two covers.
An Alisa Review: College Discipline by Caitlin Ricci
Rating:  4.5 stars out of 5
college-discipline-by-caitlin-ricciFour stories of sex, romance, and college boys learning to kneel.
Hitachi is a police officer reduced to being a glorified babysitter for a rich man’s son. He resents his assignment, but Gabriel isn’t the brat Hitachi believes he is. He’s a man who likes pain, and who wants Hitachi to let loose with him too.
Leo fantasizes about having sex with a complete stranger, but when he gets his chance it isn’t nearly as wonderful as he imagined it to be. His dad’s boss tries to teach him a lesson about making stupid choices, but his education in submission doesn’t end there.
Jensen is horrible at math, and now he’s in a calculus class that he’s barely getting through. His parents get him a tutor, but this tutor is interested in teaching Jensen about far more than just math.
Timothy comes back home, to a tiny town he can’t stand, when his mother’s illness gets worse. He’s made a string of bad decisions, and his mother’s friend is determined to turn his life around before Timothy gets lost entirely.
This was a wonderful collection of stories.  All of these boys were looking for something even if all of them didn’t know it, but are willing to embrace their desires and the men that will help guide them.  The one thing I loved with these stories is they all have a HFN ending with a positive outlook towards their future together.
Jensen’s Tutoring Session
We see Jensen’s point of view and how he opens up and puts down his defenses to do what Sam believes will help with his constant distraction.  It works well, but Jensen is willing to put the work in to get better.  Seeing Sam open himself up to Jensen when he puts his feelings and dreams on the line is heartwarming.
Leo’s Grand Plan
Leo’s fantasy isn’t quite what he thought it would be, but when Donovan shows him what real submission can be like he is hooked.  We see Leo’s determination to show Donovan that he can be what he needs and their acceptance of each other was nice, even seeing that Donovan doesn’t plan to hide their relationship forever helps.
Hitachi’s New Assignment
Hitachi’s complete annoyance with the whole situation at the beginning of the story is adorable, I understand it but maybe not to the extent he was.  Gabriel is tired of his father’s match making, but is willing to make the best of it when he finally gets someone that fits perfectly with his desires.  I loved seeing Hitachi’s walls fall and his hopes that maybe he can have a future with someone who wants the same things he does.
Timothy’s First Rodeo
Man, Timothy must have really been a jerk when he left his hometown after high school and other’s views of him haven’t gotten any better as his mother has continued to get sicker and he hasn’t been there to support her.  When he does come home he unfortunately has to live with the consequences of his actions, but Adam is willing to help pick him up and get started again on the right path.  It’s sad to see Timothy reevaluating his life knowing he has tried so hard, but hasn’t had the right support behind him.
Cover art by Natasha Snow is perfect and I love the understated picture.
A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Unzipping 7D (Unzipped Shorts #2) by J.C. Long
Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5
unzipping-7d-by-j-c-longThis is a delightful short story full of sexy situations, two hot guys, and an app that fulfills its promise.
Frequent traveler Jordan Price uses the time in the airport lounge to search his Unzipped app—just in case. After all, meeting a hot guy here might help pass the time. As it happens there is a guy nearby, and in fact, Heath is not only nearby, he’s on the same flight. Grabbing a few minutes to chat is pretty unsatisfying since Jordan wants to get to know Heath in more of a physical way, but the flight is called and it seems all they can do is board.
However, the very enterprising Jordan stops at 7D and convinces the passenger next to Heath to switch seats with him so he can be with his “buddy.” And from there until the end of the flight, the men get to know one another quite well. In fact, they are members of the Mile High Club by flight’s end.
I was very impressed and actually pretty surprised that the author managed so much character development within forty pages. I was also connected to both characters quickly and was cheering for them to get some alone time. And then what I got, by the end of the story, was a very pleasant surprise and the possibility of at least a HFN. Loved these guys!
I highly recommend this one. What a great way to spend an afternoon!
~~~~

The cover by Natasha Snow is very cleverly done with a thumbnail of a man with a bare torso on the face of a cell phone being held in another man’s hand—the perfect representation of a pickup app.

A MelanieM Review: Imago (Imago #1) by N.R. Walker

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

imago-by-nr-walkerNerdy, introverted genius lepidopterist, Lawson Gale, is an expert on butterflies. He finds himself in a small town in Tasmania on a quest from an old professor to find an elusive species that may or may not even exist.

Local Parks and Wildlife officer, Jack Brighton, is an ordinary guy who loves his life in the sleepy town of Scottsdale. Along with his Border collie dog, Rosemary, his job, and good friends, he has enough to keep from being lonely.

But then he meets Lawson, and he knows he’s met someone special. There’s more to catching butterflies, Jack realises. Sometimes the most elusive creatures wear bowties, and sometimes they can’t be caught at all.

Lawson soon learns there are butterflies he can’t learn about it in books. They exist only in a touch, in a kiss, in a smile. He just has to let go first, so these butterflies can fly.

Imago is the story of finding love, bowties, and butterflies.

If I had asked N.R. Walker to write a book just for me, Imago is it.  Talk about a book made for a naturalist who reads m/m romances!  Imago comes complete with N.R. Walker’s outstanding matchup of characters, a setting to sink into, and a storyline that grabbed me at every narrative choice the author makes.  If I could, I’d add on a star or two as I loved it that much.

Starting with the meet up on the plane and then in the airport, Walker lays out that these two are special, ready to deflect all the stereotypes ready to be thrown at them. Sure, some initial traits you might expect are there.  The  fumbling, the lateness, etc from  Lawson and from the tall, handsome Jack the sheer capability to manage things.  But Walker uses that as an outline to slowly fill in the real men, the ones full of intellect and passion for all sorts of things that we get to discover as the story continues and they reveal themselves to each other.  I love that in a romance and N.R. Walker brings us so intimately into these men’s lives that I feel as though I’m there with them, listening and watching something special unfold.

Imago has a scientific meaning, one that’s revealed at the end of the story.  I’m going to leave it for the reader to discover as its a beautiful way to end the novel.  But science and the passion for nature and conservation is woven throughout this story.  One man is a Parks and Wildlife officer, the other a lepidopterist.  Both men love nature and understand the need to preserve, document and promote conservation of the species.  I believe the author believes in this as well but the message is delivered beautifully through her ties with her country and with the flora and fauna she describes in her stories.  We get plenty of that here through Jack and Lawson’s hikes and preservation work.  I loved every word and sentence! The science is well researched and tools of the trade are spot on. It was so well done in every way.  I didn’t find myself cringing once (which is a real thing when reading books about field research and park rangers).

Along with the passion for each other and for their jobs, there’s some action and suspense too.  Walker gives us everything as well as a HFN that’s realistic and perfection.  I’m so happy we didn’t get a HEA for these men.  That would never work here.  But there’s a promise for more and I can’t wait!

Here’s a book I’m already getting ready to open up again for the shear pleasure of a second read.  So yes, I highly recommend it.  Now if only I can find the patience to wait for the second book to come out.

Cover art is perfection as well.  Look at that butterfly as a bowtie!

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Leaning Into Love (Leaning Into #1) by Lane Hayes

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

leaning-into-love-by-lane-hayesLet me start by saying I love Lane Hayes’s work, so I immediately jumped at the chance to read this one for review. I was given three weeks, but I took less than three days to read it, savor it, and write this review. This story was delicious, delightful, and decadent. Better than a fine piece of chocolate!

Set in San Francisco, this story was originally part of an anthology and is now going to be the start of a new series. All I can say is “Sign me up!” because if the rest are anything like this one, I’m all in.

There’s not much I love more than a geek, so I was quite happy to find that Eric Shuster is that and more. He’s also cute, humble, sweet, and the type of person who sees to the needs of his friends before his own. His work partner and ex-lover, Nick, has announced that he’s getting married, but Eric can see immediately that he’s marrying for money, not love. The girl is the daughter of a wealthy investor and Nick is always on the lookout for more funds for their technology company, whether they need them or not.

As the story evolves, Eric finally faces the fact that he and Nick were really never in love, just friends and fuck buddies, and there’s no reason to grieve his loss. He ends up spending more time with his friends, especially Zane Richards, a handsome sportsman who loves his water sports, whether they be surfing, water polo, or sailing. In fact, Zane has his own company working with the wealthy who need an experienced yachtsman to simply sail or to race. Eric and Zane become closer than they’ve ever been in the dozen years they’ve known each other as they rediscover their likes and dislikes and explore a deeper connection than the usual surface level among friends.

I highly enjoyed watching their friends-to-lovers relationship develop. Ms. Hayes provided the perfect amount of heat and humor and even a little angst, though thankfully that wasn’t overdone. Just give me a love story that will cheer me up, make me break out my personal fan, and leave me feeling warm and fuzzy and you’ve made my day. This one made my day. I highly recommend it to all MM romance lovers, and especially to those who enjoy friends-to-lovers romances. Yummy!

Cover art by Reese Dante shows a male naked torso against a scenic background photo depicting the Golden Gate Bridge with sailboats gracefully floating along below on the deep-blue water of the bay. It feels refreshing and is both attractive and pertinent to the story.

Lawson soon learns there are butterflies he can’t learn about it in books. They exist only in a touch, in a kiss, in a smile. He just has to let go first, so these butterflies can fly.

Imago is the story of finding love, bowties, and butterflies.

Author Bio

N.R. Walker is an Australian author, who loves her genre of gay romance. She loves writing and spends far too much time doing it, but wouldn’t have it any other way.

She is many things; a mother, a wife, a sister, a writer. She has pretty, pretty boys who she gives them life with words.

She likes it when they do dirty, dirty things…but likes it even more when they fall in love. She used to think having people in her head talking to her was weird, until one day she happened across other writers who told her it was normal.

She’s been writing ever since…
