Review: P.S. I Spook You (The Spectral Files #1) by S.E. Harmon

I have had author S.E. Harmon on my auto buy for a while now but somehow I missed this spectacular 3-book paranormal series ! I’m rectifying that now and just finished the marvelous P.S. I Spook You.

It’s the first story in Harmon’s The Spectral Files trilogy about a FBI profiler who can communicate with ghosts (he’s a bridge from living to the dead), the Detective he’s loves, and the cases they are involved in.

P.S. I Spook You lays down the complicated history of and between both men.

Rain Christiansen, FBI profiler, left the man he loved, his family, and hometown of Brickell Bay, Florida behind when he thought he was going crazy, seeing ghosts, ghosts who were talking to him. So he ran…all the way to NYC. A new job, drugs, and a doctor who said it was something to be cured.

Detective Daniel McKenna, cold case cop who was left behind with no idea why the man he loved up and ran to NYC.

Harmon details two damaged, haunted men who still are deeply in love with each other. She gives us a remarkable hippy family for Rain that’s a delight and one for Daniel that’s slowly revealed over the course of the book.

But it’s the amazing cold case of a missing girl that reunites them that really makes this story soar. Harmon’s ghosts are so poignant, from the smallest details in their expressions to the changes that happen as memories return. Harmon’s ghosts become tangible and real. Paranormal beings that need help , and Rain is so slow to accept the role he’s obviously been given.

This is a incredible element and I’m heavily invested in how Rain is going to grow into a role that’s he’s so new and unprepared for.

That goes for his partner and their relationship. Harmon’s characters react very humanly. Denial, the avoidance, then communication. Yet you can see the future areas where this “talent” of Rain’s is is quickly becoming a issue between them.

I was so hooked on the characters and storylines I was reading into the early hours. Then started on the next before I just had to stop. These people just got to me.

If you haven’t read this trilogy already? It’s an absolute must. Outstanding plots, fantastic characters and well developed relationships. It’s all here.

Ok I have Principles of Spookology to finish and then it’s onto Spooky Business. I can’t wait. Read all three in the order they are written to understand the plot and characters progression and development.

I’m highly recommending them all.

Review: Marry Me (Tattoos and Temptation #1) by Mia Monroe

Marry Me , the first in Mia Monroe’s Tattoos and Temptation series, is a absolutely sweet , low angst best friends to lovers romance. Throw in that terrific fake fiancé trope, along with a bisexual awakening and you have a wonderful contemporary story about two men who ,over the course of their friendship, have slowly fallen in love with each other. But it takes the approaching wedding of a wedding, anxiety over seeing an abusive ex to make them realize it, including one to see his friend in a new way sexually.

Monroe makes us love these men , understand their past histories and the deep relationship they’ve developed. We also get to know Jude’s tattoo shop and the people that work there. They will also have stories to come. So will some of the people who work at the bakery with Briar. Both groups gather together when it’s time to school Jude in gay culture before he and Briar go to the wedding.

The scenes give us warmth, found family, and genuine love between the people there as well as hilarity and hijinks! From the interactions, we see a new emerging relationship between Briar and Jude that is even more interesting and intimate.

Jude’s mental and emotional progression from straight to bisexual is more one of awareness of his pasts thoughts and feelings. And adjusting his vision of himself as he learned more about himself and his own sexuality. It feels like a journey someone would take who’s just finding out their sexuality might be more fluid then they had previously thought.

The book rings out with joy . Of a happy relationship, of two friends who have discovered they are also deeply in love.

Marry Me is sweet, endearing, and sexy. I love the characters and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Each book is very different. So I’ll need to check in to see what’s next.

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for low angst, sweet romance, this is the one for you! I’m recommending it!

Review: Hot Seat (The Hot Cannolis #1) by Eli Easton and Tara Lain

I hadn’t read Fireman’s Carry (The Hot Cannolis #0.5) by Eli Easton that was the source and inspiration for this series by Easton and Lain. I will certainly go ahead and do that now that I’ve read this book and the romance of those characters.

What is started there , a major fire and rescue of over 60 people by firefighter Mike Canali and civilian Shane Bower is where this novel’s storylines begins. With the aftermath of those events,weeks later, in everyone’s lives.

The events in that story are recounted somewhat so it’s not necessary to have read it to step into the people and their situations here.

One important detail, however, that’s not mentioned anywhere, either in the descriptions or authors note. There is a on page attempt at suicide, although it’s never actually termed that out loud. Also character depression. If any of this is a trigger for a reader, please know this in advance so you be the best judge about whether to read the story or not.

There are so many terrific elements here. The characters are very well done. Shane Bower and his Pops are amazing. From the moment Shane makes his appearance on the page with his book club (who I also adored hugely) I was immediately engaged. He was believable, likable, vulnerable, just everything you knew would end up pulling at your heart strings. Then I met his grandfather, Pops. And I was all in. Pops is another great character. Throughly realistic and wonderful.

I think most readers will have mixed feelings about the Cannolis, the enormous Italian firefighter clan that Mike Cannoli belongs to. I feel they are pretty realistic myself in the way they are portrayed. I’ve know a family very similar to them and while some may argue they may seem too black and white in their characteristics, I can argue that those personality traits are also very believable and true .

The men , father and brothers, were very homophobic and followed that old hard core machismo that impacted every part of their lives from childhood up. For Mike, having to live up to their ideals and endure their rigid idea of masculinity made the stress upon his daily life an ever increasing pressure he wasn’t even aware of. Until he was. When the very out Shane Bower enters his and his family’s life.

The authors accurately portrayed what happens when the status quo is upset within a traditional Italian family, with the women on one side and the men on the other.

The majority of the story deals with Mike and his coming to grips first with his sexuality, then with the idea of a relationship, then the overwhelming fear of being known as gay to his family. This is really his story and it’s a realistic, painful one.

Shane is just as much a part of it as a out and proud gay man in love with someone who can’t accept himself. That’s another element and equally hurtful. To Shane and Mike.

The support characters, from the wonderful women of the Cannoli family to Shane’s friends to a surprise in the form of Donny, give this story extra depth. I love them all.

Mike’s depression and the events that follow feel accurate but deserve a trigger warning. FYI.

I am recommending this story. I wouldn’t call this a romantic comedy however. There’s humor but the focus is serious and dramatic while still including the romance.

I liked that the authors recognizes that not everyone would be able to come around and accept Mike’s new sexuality completely. That’s just not realistic given his family. Thanks for keeping it real!

I’m really looking forward to the next in the series. It’s Donny’s story, Hot Winds. Can’t wait.

Review: Mongrel (Outcast Mates #1) by Lee Colgin

Several elements drew me to this story. The dramatic cover, a new to me author, and the attraction of seeing how another writer would handle the popular supernatural mate/bonding coupling of a vampire and werewolf. Throw in a historical aspect and a mystery? The book seems ideal.

I enjoyed Mongrel. Lee Colgrin has so many great ideas and terrific story themes here.

Starting with Mongrel who’s name is Andreas. He’s a member of a pack that views him as a freak due to his genetic makeup and treats him accordingly. Except for a wonderful character named Ava, who stands in as a grandmother to him. The scenes between the two are done with heart and real warmth. In fact most scenes involving any family members are believable and heartwarming. This is a wonderful element for this writer.

The brief scenes with the Alpha reinforce the pack’s view of the inferior status the Mongrel plays there. Yet the Alpha insists that he be returned to the Pack after the mission is completed. More on this later.

The time period chosen is 1610 Hungary. Or what that area approximates. Colgin nicely included the political factions and wars into the narrative along with a fantastic literary/historical surprise that I absolutely adored.

I won’t spoil that, but major shout out here to her for that inclusion. It fit in so well here.

The main characters of Andreas and Bowie were well defined, their well crafted personalities and past histories helping to connect us to them and their relationship.

I liked their romance, thought they fit together well , especially as Andreas needed a pack, but the deep “love” as opposed to a mate bond felt a little quick here, given the timeframe.

The mystery of the missing girls , adding in Bowie’s emotional tie in, was a terrific one that I felt wasn’t quite played out to all its promises. The author missed a nice chance at the end to give her readers and several of her characters a cathartic moment of happiness because she forgot to deliver a promised character back home. It was an important part of the story.

And Colgin did this twice. Once for a child who started the mission. And lastly to finish off on any repercussions by not delivering Andreas back to his pack . An entire element about the Mongrel is never satisfied here but left dangling. The Alpha is determined to keep the Mongrel hidden, yet Andreas comes back, leaves again. Never confronts his Alpha about his status. However, the story seems to be finished.

Without actually finishing up some important storylines.

So I’m glad I read this book but I’m not giving it as high a rating as it could have had.

There’s at least two more novels. I’m onto the second about a incubus we meet in this story. I’ll let you know what I find.

If you like supernatural romances with an historical bent and a mystery to boot, this is the one for you.

Review: Pretty Poison (Sinister in Savannah #3) by Aimee Nicole Walker

I’ll start my review much the same as the author did. With trigger warnings.

Pretty Poison deals with some very traumatic issues. The main character of Rocky continues to suffer from PTSD, the emotional damage he carries deep from the trauma inflicted from a murder-suicide that occurred while he was on a case. That case and all that occurs happens in the Prologue. And while it’s not overly graphic, it’s emotionally disturbing enough to cause distress or harm for those people for whom it’s a trigger and anyone that might feel anxiety. That is something Rocky is also dealing with.

Pretty Poison is full of serious elements that get a extremely thorough examination without it feeling like a scientific lecture. In Mr Perfect, we learned of Rocky’s husband and a mention of Vegas wedding. But now we get to see the events that brought Rocky and his husband together but also devastated their marriage and his career.

It’s the detritus of a broken marriage that’s strewn across chapters as we learn , bit by bit, everything that tore them apart, just as the current case is bringing them back together.

Just a masterful job of characterization and writing.

In between we also have the ongoing heartbreak of knowing that Miss Marla is dying and the community is doing everything they can not to mourn as she’s asked. She’s still the fabulous heart of this series and the one the men turn to for hugs, love, irreverent advice,and an amazing casserole.

The case of Tess Hamilton that the men are investigating is as fascinating and labyrinthine as the others. It’s full of implications for each man’s past, reflections on redemption and forgiveness, and the ability to recover and heal to move forward.

Pretty Poison is an emotional journey and an extraordinary story. It’s an incredibly gratifying way to wrap up the Sinister in Savannah trilogy. Even more so since the author has promised to revisit this universe with stories for characters we met in each of the three novels who also deserve further attention.

I can’t wait. But I’m so happy to leave the men, their partners and Miss Marla here, in Savannah at this point in time.

This is a truly amazing series and shouldn’t be missed. Read them in the order they were written for the character, and series arc development.

I’m highly recommending all three.

Trigger warning: the main character struggles with PTSD resulting from an investigation involving a murder-suicide. While the content is not overly graphic, it could still cause emotional harm to some readers. One of Rocky’s side effects is anxiety, which may trigger similar reactions in those battling the disorder. As with the murder-suicide scene, I avoided being too graphic with his attacks.

Review: Hell and Gone by Tal Bauer

I’m thrilled to see Tal Bauer branching out into the western genre. Hell and Gone is the second western novel I’ve read of his. The first being the terrific Never Stay Gone, the beginning of his new Texas Rangers series.

Prior to these stories, it was Bauer’s excellent espionage or political thrillers I knew him by.

But extending his world of law enforcement characters to include those branches of western police such as Stock Detectives, Range Detectives, and Brand Inspectors is not only exciting but in an age where cattle rustling is close to a multi million dollar business, a section of criminal activity rarely covered outside of historic novels. As the author himself tells us these officers can be called upon to assist federal, state and local agencies investigations or arrests. No matter what they may be for.

And the American west covers a lot of territory.

Here it’s a section of Montana and a mountain range known as the Crazies. Bauer’s writing has never been finer or emotionally deep when describing the wildness of this land and the soul deep hold it has on the men here. The gritty harshness of ranch life high in the Crazies that runs along side the Incredible wild beauty of the mountains speaks to the reader on every page.

The men are tough, hard, filled with pain. Torn by life, damaged, filled with rage , and yet still capable of great sweetness.

Everett Dawson is one shut down man until he arrives at his new assignment, his first as a Stock Detective. His background, his damage, come through in trickles, pulled from him by his case and the one man demanding Everett look beyond the easy answers everyone else is giving him.

That’s the amazing character of Lawrence Jackson. All fire, rage, competence, and sheer belief in himself and his knowledge of the land, Law burns off the page, igniting the story and Everett’s case.

It’s a matter of conflagration!

The investigation is scary, tumultuous and one long white knuckle horse back ride. It’s so suspenseful that you literally find yourself holding your breath.

There’s violence, high action, murder , and a fantastic resolution.

Law and Everett make an outstanding, fascinating couple. One I’d love to see made into a series with Stock Detective as the focus agency.

Hope Bauer is listening.

In the meantime, what a marvelous exciting new tale, full of rarely explored sectors of law enforcement and amazing descriptions of a pristine area of Montana.

Review: How To Save a Human (VRC: Vampire Related Crimes #4) by Alice Winters

How To Save a Human is the last story in the VRC: Vampire Related Crimes series by Alice Winters.

Books one and two had the same couple as it’s focus, Finn and Marcus. Their romance and Finn’s arc took both novels to finish. Both were major characters in the VRC unit.

So was Alexei Karsynov aka Karsen, a Detective at the unit and Finn’s best friend. Claude Church was Marcus’ brother as well as a major character in the plot. So not surprisingly How to Lure a Hunter was their story and romance.

They could have actually had a two parter as well. But since they didn’t, Winters wrote a fourth story. It’s couple had a secondary character that only made brief appearances throughout the other stories and a completely new character.

It was based on a sentence, a mere mention of a boyfriend, a book or two ago …that … well honestly I’m not sure if that is what is the foundation for this. Anyway. Unlike, the other three, I felt no real need to read this other then to complete the series.

However, it turns out I did enjoy How to Save a Human. It was a slow start because neither character was especially appealing after the dynamic characters they followed. But I found both grew on me.

River did the more of his current situation and past was revealed. Bentley DeGray, who I’d never given much thought to at all, became something more than just so much background noise next to everyone else.

But all that took time. The other couples were there, working on the investigation at hand, which helped keep me engaged while I was waiting to feel connected to the main couple.

That did happen and then I was involved in their struggle but , something was missing here.

There were a few plot holes. Investigative problems within the tight knit group that felt “off” . Questions not asked or answers accepted without hesitation.

Either way. I felt at the end this was a good story but not as satisfying as the three that preceded it.

I’ll still recommend it and the series. Make sure to read them in the order they are written.

Review: Ride the Lightning (Sinister in Savannah #1) by Aimee Nicole Walker

I’ve always found Aimee Nicole Walker to be an excellent author so I was happy to find a series of hers I hadn’t read yet. From just the first book I’m in for an outstanding , exciting journey!

Ride the Lightning is the first novel in Walker’s Sinister in Savannah series and it’s amazing. Located in the historic southern city of Savjannah, Georgia, the author makes full use of Savannah’s well known haunts and southern charm as a solid foundation for her characters and their lives which are as deeply seated within that community.

Sinister in Savannah is a crime podcast run by three friends, one of which is Jonas St Johns , a criminal analyst for the Georgia Bureau of Investigations.

Jonas is truly a mesmerizing character. Tall, scarred , highly intelligent, and haunted by his past, Jonas is half the heart of this story. The other half? That belongs, not to the romantic interest, although he’s quite wonderful, but to Jonas’ neighbor, Marla.

Marla, the magnificent drag queen, who let Jonas into her life and now has some decidedly serious favors to ask of him.

Marla and her pug, Betty (named after the fabulous Betty White of course) are everything! She’s captivating, poignant, flamboyant, and magnificent. It’s her touching, intimate, close relationship with Jonas that immediately connects the reader to them and this story. Within that duo , and then within Jonas’ house, we see a odd but wonderful found family start establishing itself.

There’s Kendall, Jonas’s roommate, Avery, the love interest and Jonas’ intern, Felix and Rocky, the other two men who run the podcast with him. By the time the story has ended , the found family and community has swelled around him, due in part to the murder mystery he was asked to investigate.

The old murder mystery touches off all types of revelations and reverberations. Including ones that bring up old memories that have traumatized Jonas for years.

This story is about growth and healing as it is about leaving and letting go.

And found families and forgiveness.

I’m so happy to have found this novel, new characters and series. It’s such a joy to have been on this first journey with Marla . How I love her.

I can’t wait for you all to meet her and everyone else here. I’m highly recommending this story.

How To Lure a Hunter is Alexei and Claude’s story. The third book in the VRC: Vampire Related Crimes series, this one takes a character we’ve known through the previous stories, Alexei, and puts him under the microscope as the romance between himself and Claude advances.

Alexei, also known as Karsen, hasn’t had much of his background revealed. Turns out he’s been keeping secrets.

When a older true vampire with a nose fit research is the one romancing you, that’s a hard thing to continue.

Especially when your past arrives and makes it impossible to hide your secrets.

This novel delves into the history of both Claude and Alexei in a number of ways. It’s a two person pov so we get their memories from the past events that has delivered each man to their current situation…. mostly.

With Claude, he’s lived a long and fascinating life , so it’s only the relevant times and places.

But it serves to flesh out each man further and give their romance the right depth of emotional quality needed to back up the words coming from Claude. He may seem frivolous but he’s anything but.

The plot is intriguing and complicated enough that you stay connected to the men as the events unfold and the action ramps up.

There’s some deep scares and wonderful elements here. And yes, lively animals to adore.

I loved Claude the minute the author introduced him and he only got better with each story. He and Alexei deserved their HEA. I’m thrilled they got it.

How To Lure a Hunter (VRC: Vampire Related Crimes #3) by Alice Winters is another winner in this series with one left to go to wrap it all up.

Well, this was an exhilarating, heart in your throat ride!

How to Elude a Vampire wraps up Finn and Marcus’ part of the VRC: Vampire Related Crimes series. It does so by scaring the bejezas out of us!

As How to Vex a Vampire ended, things were quiet so far as the villain related occurrences. But here, he and the plot comes roaring back to terrifying life.

Winters makes this villain truly horrifying because his motives behind his actions that have traumatized Finn and continue to haunt him in the present are unknown.

He’s bested every effort to find him and he’s strong.

Usually I’ve an idea who the culprit is partway through but here? Nothing. It was a complete shock as was the motivations.

As with every story, there’s multiple plots to go along with the overlying one and new relationship dynamics developing.

Claude Church , Marcus’ brother, is becoming an integral part of the series and team. He’s a great character. Flamboyant, literary, a vampire who’s outlook is the antithesis of his brother’s.

Alexei Karsynov has been a huge part of this series from the beginning and is now one of Finn’s closest friends at the VRC unit and outside. He’s also being pursued romantically by Claude. It’s a delightful idea and they will make a wonderful couple . Their story is book three. It starts here.

How to Elude a Vampire has a complicated and extremely painful and scary plot that wraps up Finn and Marcus’ thread. It’s incredible. It also sets the foundation for the next book and couple, How to Lure a Hunter, for Claude and Alexei.

Along the way, there will be adorable animals, snappy dialogue, great action scenes, and some smoldering hot moments.

This is another absorbing series with multiple couples to connect with . I just adore it.

Check it out. Finn is a fantastic character. There’s not many double amputee characters out there that realistically handles all aspects of that disability as well as Winters does here without letting it overpower the rest of that person’s personality and the plot.

I’m recommending this book(s) and series. And Finn.
