A MelanieM Review:Drama Dance (Nicky and Noah Mystery #8) by Joe Cosentino

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Theatre professor Nicky Abbondanza is back at Treemeadow College directing their Nutcracker Ballet co-starring his spouse, theatre professor Noah Oliver, their son Taavi, and their best friend and department head, Martin Anderson. With muscular dance students and faculty in the cast, the Christmas tree on stage isn’t the only thing rising. When cast members drop faster than their loaded dance belts, Nicky and Noah will once again need to use their drama skills to figure out who is cracking the Nutcracker’s nuts, trapping the Mouse King, and being cavalier with the Cavalier, before Nicky and Noah end up stuck in the Land of the Sweets. You will be applauding and shouting Bravo for Joe Cosentino’s fast-paced, side-splittingly funny, edge-of-your-seat entertaining eighth novel in this delightful series.

Take your seats. The curtain is going up on the Fairy—Sugar Plum that is, clumsy mice, malfunctioning toys, and murder!

With Drama Dance (Nicky and Noah Mystery #8) by Joe Cosentino  we’re into the eighth book of the series and the high camp edge this author rides between drama and comedy doesn’t seem as sharp here as it has in previous novels. And I’m so sorry to say that as big a fan as I am of this series. Having all the characters back on familiar ground such as Treemeadow College should work to ground them further in family and friends.  And it does to a point.

Yet, what is familiar can also become route.   I understand that the author uses some of the same descriptions because of new readers to the series and therefore, to this story.  But to those of us that have followed it faithfully, some elements within the series and story just aren’t working, for me at any rate.

I guess first and foremost is the fact that even now at book eight, their son Taavi is still referred to as their adopted son Taavi.  Maybe it’s just me, but you’d think that would have been dropped by now, or that the adoption reference come up less frequently.   Or, the fact that,if the author wanted to clue new readers into Taavi’s history, brought up in a  fresh way. But no. And since I’m on a roll here, the less than flattering name of the poor adopted  grandchild from friends of the MC’s parents often used as a “humor element”.  Not funny.   Again, just my opinion.  But unintentionally or not (and Im sure in this author’s case it’s not), it smacks of racism.

Two of my favorite characters within this series has always been the bickering  older  professor/husband duo of Martin and Ruben.  I am deeply fond of these two and their relationship.  They bicker sharply, lovingly, and their dialog is some of my favorites in the past stories and series.  And like everyone else in the novels, they have aged, getting older to the point that now it’s getting poignant.  And in the case of one secondary character who wants one out of his position, quite mean.  Probably realistic  Again there’s that line.

Are you as an author going tor realistic drama or high camp?  I’m not sure you can have both in this case or in this story.

I liked the idea of The Nutcracker as a vehicle for the players. It should have worked as a perfect foil  for high camp and delicious lines. But again somehow…even the nutcracker jokes were just a little off.  The dynamics between Nicky and the local detective seemed flat whereas they always had a certain tension between them before.  The villain and his capture?  It all seemed a bit familiar, as though it came from a killer and plot a few stories earlier.

Maybe a trip to America’s farmland is needed for them all.  Cheese, grandparents,  and all that. Or New Jersey.

I don’t know what the author has planned next for this series but if you are new to the characters and setting, start at the beginning.  You’ll find there the sheer joie de vivre that made me a fan to begin with.

Cover art is wonderful.  Vibrant, alive, a sure eye catcher!

A MelanieM Review: Dine with Me by Layla Reyne

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

Life never tasted so good.

Miller Sykes’s meteoric rise to award-winning chef is the stuff of culinary dreams, but it’s all crashing down around him. He’s been given a diagnosis that could cost him something even more precious than his life: his sense of taste. Rather than risk the very thing that defines him, Miller embarks on a last tour of his favorite meals while he still can.

But there’s a catch: he needs a financial backer to make it happen, and he doesn’t want anyone to know he’s sick.

Dr. Clancy Rhodes has two weeks to come to terms with putting aside oncology to work at his father’s thriving plastic surgery practice. When the opportunity to travel with a Michelin-starred chef presents itself, the foodie in him can’t believe it. It doesn’t hurt that Miller’s rugged good looks are exactly Clancy’s cup of joe.

As Clancy and Miller travel from coast to coast and indulge in everything from dive bars to the most decadent of culinary experiences, they’re suddenly sharing a lot more than delicious meals. Sparks fly as they bond over their love of flavors and the pressures of great expectations. But when Miller’s health takes a turn for the worse, Clancy must convince him he’s more—so much more—than just his taste buds. And that together, they can win a battle that once seemed hopeless.

I love stories that mix food with romance.  The two just naturally go together, a exploration of the sensual, the ability to explore new cultures through new  tastes and dishes, just the spices alone can be so heady.  Just like falling in love itself.  They are, as they say, a perfect blend.

When the chef or in this case, the author, gets it right.

And here in Dine With Me by Layla Reyne, the author gets it word for word, recipe by recipe, and scene by scene splendidly right.

I am not familiar enough with this author’s stories to know if this is the exception or the rule, but I mean to find out.  From the layered characterizations that spoke to me to the  many restaurants and dishes served up throughout the novel that speaks of the author’s love and appreciation of food and the chef’s in the kitchens, everything about Dine With Me was a journey to delight in and remember.

The author can go to making your mouth water for truffles to having your heart wrench over the pain being felt by the characters,Miller Sykes especially.   Clancy and Mike, as well as sall the other people here are so well crafted they become alive, and you fall into their lives from the moment you meet them and begin their journey.

And oh what a trip that will be… no spoilers here…but trust that it’s one you would wish to take yourself.  It sounds as though the author was intimately familiar with each and every place and for that Im envious and happy for her.  Those descriptions of the dishes and food are rich, you can almost smell the aromas, taste the umami, and let the savory and salt undertones  melt in your mouth.  OK, bring a drool cloth.

That ending?  It was everything I wanted and more.  It made my heart overflow.  Just what I need in my contemporary love stories and maybe even more.

So yes, run , don’t walk and get Dine with Me by Layla Reyne.  I love this story and only wish I could have lingered a bit longer is only to savor in this couple’s happiness and taste more of that incredible food by proxy.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audio Review: Will & Patrick Wake Up Married (Episodes 4-6) by Leta Blake and Alice Griffiths/John Solo (Narrator)

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

This absolutely wonderful and outstanding audiobook, featuring a superb vocal performance by John Solo, is a compilation of books four to six from the original Will and Patrick Wake Up Married series:

Four: Will & Patrick Fight Their Feelings

Five: Will & Patrick Meet the Mob

Six: Will & Patrick’s Happy Ending

In my opinion, John Solo far surpasses his previous best performances with his portrayal of both Will and Patrick. Each voice is distinct and the emotion conveyed with the tone of their words is spot-on. From Will’s shuddering vocal sex scenes with Patrick as they replicate Will’s long-held fantasies, to Patrick’s extreme emotion when he reveals his deepest, darkest secret to Will, both characters show their love and emotional support for each other long before they declare the words.

Part two is somewhat introspective as Patrick can’t work due to a pending malpractice suit so he spends his time with his new friend Jenny and working out his feelings for Will. Patrick is one of those people who is off-the-chart intelligent, but feelings? Uh-uh, he has no experience with those. Jenny helps him realize he’s in love with Will and that Will loves him too.

In this part he also meets Will’s dad – at the point of a gun held to his head.  It’s just a joke – a sick one, no doubt, but Tony Molinaro is a mob boss, and Patrick takes the threat seriously.  He also thinks Will’s dad is seriously hot. In fact, he sees where his Puddin’ Pop gets his sex appeal.  I have to say that Patrick makes me laugh out loud with his bizarre sense of humor and snide off-the-cuff comments. And his pet word, Puddin’ Pop, is just perfect for Will and shows Patrick’s soft side, even in the midst of chaos.

Along the way in this saga, Will’s former partner, an emotionally abusive man, makes an appearance both in person and in memories. And, Will’s alcoholism is an underlying problem throughout the story, especially as Will constantly questions his decisions, and his sponsor gives him some advice that influences his relationship with Patrick. Then, when they learn they can get a divorce now that Will’s mob relatives have changed the “family” rules for divorce, Will looks at taking a break from Patrick as a way to examine his true feelings, but Patrick is devastated.  Though Patrick finally agrees, he installs a countdown clock on his phone so he can know, down to the second, exactly how long he has to wait before getting Will back.

Thankfully, Patrick is finally reinstated at the hospital, but the death of a patient sends him reeling and he heads out of state to visit his foster mother—the woman who always gives him unconditional love and support. There we see his family of the heart and learn more about Patrick’s early days.

There’s so much packed into this compilation. There’s hot, sexy, dirty talk, spanking, role play, and love. There’s so much love—family love, family-of-the-heart love, friend love, and finally, true love, a love for all time that comes full circle when Will and Patrick reunite.

I highly recommend this series, especially in this triple volume audiobook format because it gives the bigger picture and that picture paints my heart with happiness. There’s no way these two are going to be forgotten any time soon. Kudos to the authors for the story and most especially for their sense of humor, and double kudos to John Solo for bringing these characters to life.

Cover art is different from the eBooks.  I like this, soft, warm hearted and pulls you into the couple and story.

An Alisa Review: Him Improvement by Tanya Chris

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

The course of true love runs through every neighborhood….

Only one thing stands between Gregory MacPherson II and his dream revitalization project for the gritty neighborhood of Ball’s End: a rinky-dink, run-down used bookstore called Hailey’s Comic. But when master negotiator Mac shows up to make a deal with the owner, he comes face-to-face with quirky, colorful Hailey—unexpectedly good-humored about Mac’s attempted eviction and, also unexpectedly, a hot guy.

Hailey won’t give up his lease, no matter how much money Mac offers. When it comes to consummating their mutual attraction, though, he’s a lot more flexible. Soon Mac has as hard a time prying himself out of Hailey’s bed as he does prying Hailey out of the building. But Hailey doubts Mac’s plans serve Ball’s End’s best interests, and he insists Mac give him a chance to prove his case. If they’re going to build a happy ever after, one of them will have to be remade….

This was a nice story.  Greg always thought he was helping with his economic re-development, this is until he saw it through Hailey’s eyes.  Hailey has lived a much different life than Greg and he wants Greg to see what he sees in the neighborhood he calls home.

Greg just thinks it’s going to be another typical day when he goes in to talk to Hailey but Hailey throws his world off orbit very quickly.  I loved how open and giving Hailey was even when he didn’t have much but didn’t seem willing to fret about it.

Seeing the story through Greg’s eyes we got to see how he was easily enamored with Hailey but could feel his floundering and I couldn’t help but feel for him.  I really liked Greg and that he was willing to open his eyes to what Hailey was showing him and even changing how he continues to do business though I hated that he continually seemed to doubt himself or his worth to Hailey and even his parents.  Hailey was a breath of fresh air and even if he seemed like a hippy he was able to make a stand on what he felt was important.  Seeing the story through Greg’s eyes we got to see how he was easily enamored with Hailey but could feel his floundering and I couldn’t help but feel for him.

I like the cover art by Alexandria Corza and the visual of Greg in his suit.

A Free Dreamer Review :Art of Death (Lychgate #1) by Bob Appavu

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

Starving artist Riley Burke refuses to be dependent on his rich older boyfriend—hence his second job as a nude model at the local art school.  When the famous artist Coliaro requests him for a private modeling session, he jumps at the chance to earn some real cash.

But then Westwood, a mysterious stranger, warns him to steer clear—it’s said Coliaro is undead. That his worshippers perform rituals to fill him with life energy. That every time he paints a male nude, the painting transforms to depict a gruesome murder. And that shortly after, a young man turns up dead.

Riley dismisses the rumors—until they start to play out before his eyes. When he becomes a target, Westwood comes to his aid. But Westwood is secretive and dangerous himself… which just makes him more attractive to Riley. Riley is in over his head, and even his tenuous alliance with Westwood might not save him.

Art of Death is the first book in a new series. The blurb made it sound like a rather unique story and I certainly haven’t read anything like it before, but it still failed to wow me.

First of all, you should know that Riley’s dealing with mental health issues, namely depression. He could also use a therapist, but can’t afford one and doesn’t want to tell his boyfriend about his “angst”. There’s also talk of homophobic parents and the suicide of a family member. And, well, the murders are gruesome, but they don’t actually happen on-page. So beware if any of this triggers you.

This isn’t much of a romance. Riley is in a failing relationship with his rich boyfriend. He has some serious trust issues and can’t bring himself to open up about his troubles. And then there’s this very attractive, if somewhat dangerous and scary, stranger that Riley just can’t stop thinking about. Personally, I enjoyed that. I just wish there’d been a bit more of an explanation why things in the bedroom didn’t work out for Riley and Nick. It seemed like a big issue on Riley’s part, but we never get a reason.

Riley’s lack of curiosity kind of baffled me. The first thing I’d want to know if I met an undead, immortal person, is how it all works. Are you born that way? Do you need to die under specific circumstances to come back to life? And so on. Because these undead aren’t zombies, they’re more like normal people, who just can’t die. And some of them have a serious lack of morals.

The plot itself had a few holes in it. Dead bodies turn up around Riley and yet there’s very little police involved. It’s just mentioned in passing that they showed up at the crime scene, but there’s zero follow-up.

Riley is a starving free-lance artist and yet we never see him do any actual work. There’s the occasional mention of a new job designing this or that, but nothing about Riley actually working on that job. I think it would have added a little more depth to the story, which seemed a bit flat overall.

This book has less than 300 pages, which isn’t a lot. Yet it took me a surprisingly long time to finish. I guess I just wasn’t that motivated. It wasn’t boring or bad or anything, it just didn’t wow me and it couldn’t hold my interest for any length of time.

All in all, “Art of Death” is an okay book. The idea behind it is fairly unique, but the execution was a little bit lacking to me. I’m not sure yet if I want to actually read the next book in the series. I guess I’ll make that decision when it comes out.

The cover by Bob Appavu is okay. I think a bit more connection to the plot would have been nice. As it is, it’s a little bit average.

A MelanieM Audio Review :Single (Single Dads #1) by R.J. Scott and Sean Crisden (Narrator)

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

Reeling from the painful rejection of a man he thought he loved, Asher is left holding the baby.

Ash wants a family, and is determined to continue with a surrogacy he’d begun with his ex. Bringing baby Mia home, he vows that he will be the best father he can be. Nothing in this world matters more to him than caring for his daughter, not even accidentally falling in lust with the doctor next door. Challenged by his growing attraction to Sean, and confronted by painful memories of his family, Ash has to learn that love is all that matters.

When ER doctor Sean moves in with his friends next door to sexy single father Ash, he falls so quickly it takes his breath away. The sex they have is hot, but Ash is adamant his heart is too full with love for his daughter to let anyone else in. Why is Sean the only one who sees how scared Ash is, and how can he prove to his new lover that he desperately wants the three of them to become a family?

With the release of Single (Single Dads #1) by R.J. Scott and Sean Crisden (Narrator), one of my go to authors has delivered what will clearly be a new favorite comfort read and must have series.  This story just checks all my boxes.  It has great characters, a plot that immediately makes you empathetic towards this overwhelmed, yet loving dad, and a sweet slow slide into romance and HEA that will make you sigh and  even sniffle more than once, ok, several times.

The characterizations here are outstanding as is the dialog.  Ash is so identifiable as the young father juggling a job and a new baby.  Especially the emotional demands and fears every new parent faces when presented with the responsibility of a baby and all that represents.  Yes, wonderful, and yet,  can be a truckload of what ifs, especially when you are alone.  The author captures this so well, every damn aspect of it.

From the stress of a single dad to the household next door which has its own burdens of pressure and pain to deal with, the dynamics at  play here run from the humorous to the angst filled. It is just as easy to fall in love with all three men next door as it is Ash.  And from Sean to his other friends (who will get their own stories and romances), this quickly becomes a novel and series to treasure.

Sean Crisden does a incredible job of inhabiting each and every character, flowing easily from one to the next.  I sank into the story via his narration and never wanted t come out.  His voice has just the right tone for listening for me and it made this such a joy as an audio story.  He’s on my list of favorite narrators.

What can I say?  I absolutely adore this book in every way.  I am eagerly awaiting the audio version of the new story in the series and it will be in my top for the year.  Grab it up and see why I’m so excited!

Cover art: Meredith Russell.  Such a perfect cover.  Pertinent to the character and story, it’s also warm,  inviting and eye catching.  I love it.

Synopsis

Noah Lancaster’s life is a mess. He doesn’t know much about his past or who is parents really were. When he’s beaten on the streets one night while sleeping rough, the attack doesn’t feel like just another random assault on a vulnerable target. Somebody wanted Noah dead. But who’d want to hurt him? He’s a nobody who doesn’t know where he came from or who he truly is.

Harry Cooper wants to launch his career as an investigative journalist by telling the stories of the hardships faced by the homeless. His latest subject was lucky to survive a brutal attack—the mean streets almost swallowing him up like so many others. Noah is a mystery to Harry and it seems to the man himself.

When Noah’s attack brings these two men together, neither could imagine they’re about to be pulled into a mystery one hundred and thirty years old—and half a world away. They’re about to discover a secret someone has already killed once to protect and one that might get them both killed.

Sometimes who you are goes far beyond who you thought you were.

Noah had been here before. People didn’t have sporadic stints of living on the streets and expect to escape the occasional bashing. An assault could come from anywhere—another rough sleeper, a junkie, pimp, or sometimes from some teenage twat who thought they were being hilarious beating the shit out of someone whose life had already kicked them in the teeth. When someone was homeless, they were either invisible or a goddamn target. The fucking irony.

This was different though. This wasn’t some son of a bitch grabbing the nearest body and laying his fists into them. Noah had been stalked. He’d watched this bastard skip first one and then the next rough sleeper he’d come across in the alley until he’d spotted Noah.

Noah recognised what the man wanted, could tell by the tense set of his shoulders, the white knuckles of his clenched fists. He wanted to make Noah hurt. Sensing danger became heightened when surrounded by it day and night with no locked door to offer even the illusion of safety. So, when he’d first spotted this man, Noah had wanted to run, he’d never wanted to run so desperately in his life. But he had nowhere to go. He’d chosen poorly the night before—a rookie mistake, though he was no rookie to sleeping on the streets.

He’d been so damn exhausted, when searching for a spot to lay his head, he hadn’t cared that there’d been no second exit, no escape route in this alleyway. He’d trapped himself, and a monster had walked right into his trap. But Noah was the one caught in the deadly snare.

Noah could fight. He was scrappy, no finesse, no training, but he could throw a half-decent punch. He was capable of delivering a hit to make his opponent think twice about going after him, and if that didn’t work, he knew how to bite, kick, scratch; hell, he’d go for the balls if he had to. Another thing learned on the street if someone wanted to survive was to use every weapon in their arsenal.

The monster coming for him was tall, not the biggest man Noah had ever seen, but definitely the biggest one he’d ever had to fight. The darkness shadowed his features, but he knew the eyes were bleak, cruel; he’d seen a flash of them in the streetlight near the top of the alleyway, or maybe his imagination was making the man’s physicality as sinister as his demeanour. Noah felt those eyes on him. Glaring. And he wondered what the hell he’d done to this guy to piss him off so badly.

Noah stood, legs wide, shoulders high, chest out, trying to make himself appear as big as possible. From the man’s bearing and manner, it was evident he had next to no chance of scaring this guy off, but he had to try. Any fight he didn’t end up actually fighting was a win.

Much of his time on the street Noah was alone, but never more so than when some fucker decided to take a potshot at him. He didn’t really blame anyone for their indifference. They lived in a don’t-get-involved kind of world and when no one had their back having someone else’s could be very hard.

The man kept coming. He was close now, close enough to allow Noah to see him more clearly. His eyes were as cruel as Noah had thought, but the rest of his face he’d describe as a baby face, soft, almost sweet-looking. His cheeks were puffed as though full of cotton wool, a perfectly shaped snub nose sat above rich red cupid’s bow lips pulled into a sneer. Without more light he was unable to pick accurate skin and hair colour, but he’d guess fair for both.

Noah raked his gaze quickly down the man’s body. He was muscular but not hulk-like. He had no obvious weapon, though from the size of his hands, Noah suspected he’d be able to do plenty of damage with those alone.

He wondered if the man would speak. Sometimes they did, especially the arsehole teens who, for whatever reason, felt the need to justify why they were beating the shit out of their victim, all while bragging amongst themselves about how tough they were.

Faster than he’d have thought possible, the man lashed out. Noah’s head snapped back, and a spray of blood bloomed from his nose, the sickening crack turning his stomach. He hadn’t had a chance to move. The stranger’s speed and accuracy confirming to Noah this man was no amateur—and Noah was in big trouble.

Before his head had even righted, he took a blow to his stomach, the force of it doubling him over. He gasped for air, trying to suck in big gulps through his mouth. The man’s knee connected with his already broken nose before he could catch his breath, and the follow-up blow to the back of his head sent him to his knees.

Noah didn’t stand a chance; he understood how dire his situation was now. This man was a professional—he knew what he was doing.

His vision was darkening, tiny purple-black spots making it difficult for him to see clearly. He lashed out with a fist, connecting with what he thought was the man’s thigh. He wondered if his attacker even felt the blow there was so little power behind it.

The man aimed for his head again, but somehow Noah managed to dodge backwards so the blow was only glancing. Unlike in the movies, Noah knew a normal person couldn’t take too many direct, powerful hits to their head without substantial damage or worse. His focus was scattered, not sharp enough for him to decide what to do about the punches raining down on him though. Did he duck and cover, hope to ride out the attack while protecting his head? Or did he try to get up and fight?

He kind of roll crawled to put some distance between them but the man charged relentlessly after him. Noah kicked out with his leg. He tried to aim for the man’s knee, but his head was spinning worse than the one time he’d had way too much whisky. He wasn’t sure where his foot ended up connecting, but his attacker only grunted and kept coming.

Noah curled into a ball, pulling his head down to his chest and wrapping his arms around the vulnerable area. He felt a sharp hard kick to his back and then another. He tried to roll to his knees, but the bastard wouldn’t relent even a little.

“Hey! You there!” A booming voice called.

Noah’s attacker stopped immediately. He heard running footsteps and glanced out from beneath his arms just in time to see the man sprint down the alley, barrel into a man and woman at the opening, and keep right on running. He didn’t have the energy to move, much less chase after him or even call out for help. He closed his eyes and groaned.

He wasn’t quite sure what happened to time then—it either slowed down or sped right up. He was too out of it to know which. He heard voices, vaguely registered they were occasionally talking to him, but he couldn’t be fucked answering. He wanted to sleep. His eyes were welded shut—they had to be—but lights flashed continually behind them. There were more voices and then some arsehole was poking and prodding at him. It was the strangest thing—as though he was there but wasn’t.

One minute he was curled up on the cold, filthy concrete and then suddenly, he was being jostled around in some kind of vehicle. Ambulance, probably—at least he hoped it wasn’t a cop car. He smelled pee and knew it was his, but he didn’t have the wherewithal to be ashamed. He was amazed he was capable of smelling at all, given he was sure his nose must be shattered in a million pieces. Mixed with the acidic pee was the coppery stench of blood.

Someone was asking him for his name. He thought his name was Noah, but everything was a bit hazy. He couldn’t for the life of him think of his last name.

“Can you tell me your name?” the voice asked again.

“Shh. I’m sore,” he replied, though the words were so slurred he didn’t know if he’d be understood.

He heard a soft chuckle and then that damn voice again. “I know you’re sore, but can you tell me your name.”

“Noah,” he groaned, so the voice would shut up.

“Noah, do you have any allergies?”

Jesus fucking Christ, didn’t this idiot know he just had the stuffing beaten out of him? He didn’t give a shit about allergies. He groaned again. The fucker could take his whimpered reply however he wanted.

“I’ll take that as a no. I’m going to give you a shot of morphine. Have you had anything to drink tonight?”

“Don’t drink.” Fuck, the slurring was getting worse. He shook his head no to make sure this guy would understand him. He felt like his goddamn brain was rattling around in his skull.

“Okay, good. Here we go then, just a small pinch.”

Noah felt a bite—a fucking painful one—in his arse cheek. “Fuck,” he spat. Small pinch my arse.

“I know, sorry. Morphine shots kinda hurt.”

“Arsehole,” he groaned. Every part of him hurt, but hopefully the morphine would kick in soon. He knew he was being taken to a hospital but wished he wasn’t. He wished he could talk them into letting him out now. With his veins full of morphine to dull the pain, he’d be okay. He’d find somewhere to curl up for a while and sleep it off. But they had their duty of care and blah, blah, blah. He’d sign something to say they did all they could, and he’d happily take the blame if he died from his injuries on the street.

He hated hospitals, loathed anywhere really that put him on the radar. He was no criminal, and he wasn’t on the run, but the idea of anyone knowing exactly where he was sent shivers up his spine for no particular reason except that’s just the way he was made.

Hands busied themselves all over his body. He had neither the energy nor the ability to open his eyes and watch what they were doing. From the noises being made and the sensations on his skin, they were putting in an IV and attending to his wounds. Noah floated happily on his morphine cloud, content to lie back and let those hands have their way with him. He still wished he wasn’t headed for a hospital, but he’d keep the worry for when the drugs wore off.

He felt the cold air rush in when the doors of the ambulance were yanked open. His body was jostled around when the stretcher was pulled from the back, though he knew they were trying to be careful—that pesky duty of care. He really tried to peel at least one eyelid open when he heard voices gathered over him, discussing him as if he wasn’t there. He heard them say assault and concussion and lucky. He didn’t care about any of it. He was in no pain now, and all his other worries seemed far off, silly, unimportant.

He heard them say something about topping the dose, and then even the haziness in his brain faded as he drifted away.

A MelanieM Review: Just Like Heaven by T.L. Bradford

Rating:   3.25 stars out of 5

Noah Sinclair
Noah Sinclair is best described as an egotistical, pompous, anal retentive, asshat. And those are his better qualities. Lately, Noah has lost touch with his playboy character “Jace” on the show Americana and can’t quite put his finger on why. The studio decides it is time to shake up his character by making him an offer he can’t refuse, literally. They will introduce a new love interest for his character “Jace.” Only this time, there’s a twist.

Josh Hill
Josh Hill is up a creek and sinking fast. He’s got no job, no money, no credit and is about to be kicked out of his apartment. Opportunity comes in the form of a job offer from the show Americana. Everything should be perfect; only there is one hitch. He will be the new love interest for Noah Sinclair’s character on the beloved show.

So, opposites are supposed to attract, right? Not so fast. No one said life was that easy. Both actors find themselves in untested waters. Will they be able to play a same-sex couple with no prior experience authentically? Well, they say practice makes perfect.

Carefree, fun-loving Josh and uptight, overbearing Noah, realize they need to make the best of their bad situation and are forced to find common ground. Over time, their roles in each other’s lives become blurred. Is their attraction fake, or is it real? To top it off, Noah has a dark skeleton in his closet that can prevent them from ever moving forward.

Can they get on the same page and save both of their careers and their relationship?

Or will they end up yesterday’s tabloid fodder?

Like Heaven by T.L. Bradford was an interesting read.  Just as there were elements to like and be entertained by there were also aspects of the story that were disjointed, character issues that took away from the plot, and continuity problems that you couldn’t overlook. Plus it just felt overly long.

The manner and plot is the initial element that drew me to read this story. Loved the idea of a Netflix type serial deciding to take a popular character down a new  “path” in the series storyline to gain new followers and higher ratings.  Sounds legit.  The story is almost narrated by both main characters, Josh and Noah.  Noah being the already popular actor on set, but in fact in danger of losing his job because his on series love interest was reassigned to another storyline.  The other actor?  A hardluck newbie, Josh, down to his last dime, almost ready to return home if something doesn’t happen soon. Both men say they are straight, and now become destined to play gay roles as lovers.

Great.  But this is not a comedy.

Bradford has created Noah with a dark, tormented past that will slowly reveals itself until it crashes out  with a horror towards the end. It’s with Noah’s character and history that I raise many issues.   We are told repeatedly that he was raised on an estate and his real father is rich.  The truth, which is not supposed to contradict that statement,  would actually have no bearing on reality. Fundamentalist whackjob preachers living on estates? Compounds perhaps.  Anyway, just didn’t connect.  As did so many other things about Noah’s upbring, the abuse, the lack of reporting, including his college incidents.  I don’t want to go into particulars because that runs into spoilers but lets just say the things that happended to Noah, the lack of reporting all throughout his life, how if affected him.  And his lack of therapy.  There are huge holes here that are never resolved.

That speaks to changes in the character’s personality.  He is not the most likeable fish in the sea tbh.  While he will be honest about  why is his hurting Josh, being emotionally unavailable etc, , and the author clearly wants you to believe that they have laid down the foundation here  for this couple, instead there was a part of me that thought there was something missing. Possibly because Noah himself seemed so unstable and fluid for someone who is supposed to be so rigid.

Josh on the other hand was adorable.  I enjoyed his character (except for the bit where he was worrying that he was the “woman” in the relationship because it made him less of a man. Really? I found that  demeaning to women, btw.  But the author breezed through that convo in a matter of minutes so all done.

The parents of both Josh and Noah (stepfather) were wonderfully drawn and spending time with them as well as the rest of the cast and families was a joy.  Made the book fly when other parts just dragged.

Continuity is a problem here.  As I talked about years ago in a blog post, readers care about the pets authors give their characters.  A author either needs to commit to  them or leave them out.  Here Bradford does the worst possible.  The author introduces Lola the cat as Noah’s sole companion as a way to show how restricted Noah’s life is  and how routine. And then dumps the animal all together, forgetting the cat until it makes a brief appearance at approximately 86% where Josh makes some comment about Noah returning home to “feed Lola”. Than the cat disappears for good. Smh.  The poor cat could have been a porcelain dolly for all the emotional weight that animal carried or effort the author put into it.  Why not just leave it  out?

There’s also the eye patch (won’t say how or on who that appears). But sometime you are looking at both eyes, sometime just one.  Ugh.  Continuity people.  Wounds also work that way as well here for secondary characters.  The end of the story just gets out of control and my disbelief ran deep.  In about everything.  Especially Noah’s actions.

Well, I just think the promise here was huge in the original storyline.  The two men meeting as actors, learning about their sexuality, coming out and finding a way to happiness.  For me at least, all that stuff with the father, well it almost belonged in another story.  it was like there were two books here and two Noah’s.  I bet you can tell which novel I preferred reading..

A MelanieM Review: Pure (Trenton Security #4) by J.M. Dabney

Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5

Innocence wasn’t a personality flaw.

Nicolas “Pure” Warner lived with the curse of a cute face and a terminal blush. He was waiting for his happily ever after. Yet he’d given up on finding his one. His partner and spotter wasn’t the type to settle down but he’d always been drawn to the other man. Pure decided he could live with that, but when powers outside their control took Raul away, Pure would stop at nothing to get Raul back even if that meant leaving the Trenton Security team behind.

Touching the sun only left you burned.

Raul Martinez was a brutal fighter. He’d worked freelance for several years at Trenton Security. There was one dark spot to the perfect job: Pure. The man was sweet and looking for forever. How did the damaged and unworthy ever hope to touch the sun without getting burned? And touching Pure would be a dream come true. When Pure endangers his freedom to save him, how could Raul convince his boy that letting him go was the only option?

This title may contain triggering material for some readers.

Pure (Trenton Security #4) by J.M. Dabney is another installment in the Trenton Security series, one of the four  interconnected series that take place in a small town called Powers, Georgia.   From a tattoo shop to a bar and band to a security team, we have a constant flux of made family that move into each other’s lives and beds. The men are often broken, from abused past childhoods, with horrific histories behind them.   They end up in Powers, Georgia and somehow find their mate or mates, and start to heal, often with some kink invlved.

And some element of suspense, and maybe even murder.  It’s always a wonderful mixture of personality, sex, redemption, healing, and love.

And kink.

Pure is no different.  We have been reading about the tension and strain between job partners Nicolas “Pure” Warner and Raul Martinez for three books now.  Each a bit of a mystery man, but Pure most of all.  With his strict rules of no sex and nickname “Pure” plus the fact that this is J.M. Dabney writing his story, you knew something in his background was going to be bad. And as the author says in the forward, if a graphic rape scene is a trigger, skip the Prologue.

Pure is a great dichotomy of a personality, a character I came to love here especially.  Both the cool operations  planner/sniper as well as the  beautiful damaged man inside.  But he is also one of my only issues here with the story.  Daddy/boy relationships is a familiar theme within all the series and it is a main thread here as well.  And while I thought Raul’s personality and strengths as a  Daddy were well layered into his character from the beginning, not so for Pure.

With Raul Martinez Dabney does such an excellent job with the emotional reasons why this works so well for this man.  You can see why he is a Daddy figure, why it fits him sexually and emotionally. But with Pure, the psychology of the need for a Daddy or to be his Boy, that foundation was never really laid into the story.  We just learned about Pure’s traumatic past and then almost immediately he knew he needed a Daddy.   That was too abrupt a transition emotional, mentally, and perhaps sexually, especially in keeping with what we know for this part to make sense.  In past stories, the Daddy/boy relationship was layered in more gradually so that the needs meshed from the beginning and you could see why it worked so well.  I don’t believe that foundation was necessarily laid out here.

What else  do I love?  Dabney’s ability to write amazing strong women, mother figures like Lily, Peaches, and the newest addition in this story, Jenn, Pure’s mother.    Amazing women, of indomitable spirit and reserves, deep humor and infinite capacity to love.  I heart them so bad.  She lit up every scene she was in

Another strength of this story was the action/suspense scenes.  Very well done and with a neat twist at the end.

I believe Pure will end this series although I’m not sure.  The trend is four books in each series and this is the fourth.  It would be nice to have one big wrap up novel with all the characters from all the series present.  What a gift that would be to all the fans who have followed the characters through so many stories and series.

If you like contemporary romance with damaged men, kink and suspense, then this story and series should speak to you.  I recommend that you start at the beginning to get a feel for the town of  Powers and the made family that you will meet throughout the story.  It’s quite a journey and one I have loved taking, story by story.

Cover Art: Reese Dante.  Another incredible cover with a model that is just haunting in his expression.
