A Caryn Release Day Review: Creative Process by Jodi Payne

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Jodi Payne is a new to me author that I am definitely going to start following more closely!

I really enjoyed this appropriately titled book, about two artistic, creative men.  As a thoroughly non-artistic person myself (although I have to admit, I secretly wish I was!), I have always been amazed at the differences between right-brained creative types and left-brained analytical types.  And I guess even the fact that I’m drawn to it in this way illustrates how left-brained I am, ha ha!  So in this book, when the author really gets into how Reese thinks up his characters, and his plots, and how they take on a life of their own, I was just fascinated.

Reese Kelsey is a successful author of what he calls thrillers and what many of his fans call horror stories.  He’s made it into the bestseller lists with his current series about a detective and his serial killer nemesis, and is working on what he plans to be the fourth and final book.  He’s methodical in a way, with a daily word count goal, deadlines to meet, marketing events to attend, but though he loves writing, he is also aware of how much it can set him apart from others.  When someone asked him if he enjoyed writing, he said

Most of the time.  Except – except when you can’t get an idea out of your mind, you know?  And you’ve got this psychotic murderer talking to you in your head, and it’s two o’clock in the morning when the rest of the sane world is asleep, and then you have to research something like blood splatter patterns or fingerprint recreation to pin something on the bad guy… and…

and he got a blank stare.  Talk about a conversation killer!  His writing also takes over to the point of forgetting to eat, or sleep, or attend important events, which has sabotaged all of his attempts so far at having a serious relationship.  There’s also the unwelcome aspect of celebrity and fame, when all Reese really wants is to be a normal guy

Reese has a very supportive group of friends, including his publicist Chad, who do their best to keep Reese functioning in the real world when he starts getting too caught up in his novels.  These gay men are the kind of friends who have become true family, and work well as secondary characters in their own right, as well as moving the plot along.  Reese is actually out with Chad when he first runs into Owen Mercado – hot, younger, talented, humble, and best of all, completely unaware of who Reese is as an author, so Reese has the chance to get to know him without the fanboy effect.  Owen is a cellist in the symphony, but also plays in a trio that gives a classical spin on pop music and has a standing gig in a local coffeehouse.  They have instant physical chemistry together, but it rapidly becomes much more than that.

Although the blurb hints at obsession and angst, I really didn’t see it.  This is a story about a building relationship, with no manufactured drama, no over the top stupidity, no crazy characters.  Yes, these men are both driven, and their careers require more than the average amount of time and dedication and flexibility, but these are clearly real people with real world issues.  This is the story of how they make it work, and how they have to recognize their own flaws in order to overcome the obstacles to that successful relationship.  I found it to be a character driven, rather than plot driven novel, which is exactly what I enjoy.  The writing is excellent, the dialogue realistic and engaging, and both men are guys I would love to meet.

Cover art by Tiferet Design was amazing.  It almost made me wonder if this picture inspired the book, the characters are just so perfectly matched to the models!

A MelanieM Review :Renewal : 3rd Annual Queer SyFy Flash Fiction Anthology

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

Re.new.al (noun)

1) Resuming an activity after an interruption, or
2) Extending a contract, subscription or license, or
3) Replacing or repairing something that is worn out,
run-down, or broken, or
4) Rebirth after death.

Four definitions to spark inspiration, a limitless number of stories to be conceived. Only 110 made the cut.

Thrilling to hopeful, Renewal features 300-word speculative fiction ficlets about sexual and gender minorities to entice readers.

Welcome to Renewal.

I am such a fan of flash fiction, the ability to  tell a complete story in 300 words or less.  Renewal is Queer SyFy’s Fourth year’s collection of flash fiction and what an incredible winner it is. Like a library full of tiny jewels, Renewal‘s flash fiction is glorious in it’s presentation of the dizzying array of imaginative themes and world building by it’s host of authors, the authors represented, the timeliness and resonance of some of their flash fiction storylines and the huge spectrum of genres included from horror to fantasy to science fiction.

Also by the sheer poetry of some of it’s stories.  As you can imagine, given the shortness of the fiction, the quantity of stories within is immense.  So are the number I call favorites, far too many to list here.  And it’s funny, you read them so quickly, that you can be several stories past one before the impact it leaves kicks in.  The “huh, no, let me think about that” that leads to you flipping back to that tale and pondering the thoughts of the author may have had writing it.  Trust me, there are many of those.

Over and over again, authors stopped my in my “reading tracks”, left breathless by what was before me.

Under Science Fiction Part II (yes it’s divided into sections like Horror and Fantasy etc), there is this story whose lyrical imagery has stayed with me:

I Will Be Your Shelter by Carey Ford Compton.  I would have bought this collection for this flash fiction alone based on this.  I will give you but this small moment from the story that still makes me weep with appreciation:

The operating room is blue, sterile. We are awake for the procedure. Surgeons slice into our numbed, shaved scalps. The drill bites. Lights, metallic tongue, clicks of bone.

Then: she bleeds into me like watercolor.

Such power, such beauty.  And this collection is full of such haunting tales.

As J. Scott Coatsworth said in his introduction “this collection includes many colors of the LGBTIQA (or QUILTBAG, if you prefer) universe—lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and asexual characters populate these pages—it was our most diverse contest yet.”

I also think it was Queer SyFy’s most outstanding. With pertinent quotes by authors at the beginning of each section and a easily accessible table of contents (I used it often to go back to stories I wanted to reread that I bookmarked), Renewal is a collection of stories that will make you think, occasionally laugh, push some boundaries, give you new authors to explore, and much, much, more.   Don’t you love it when that happens?

And yes, I highly recommend it!

An Alisa Review: Loose Ends by Jeff Erno

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

Homicide detective Tucker Brown hasn’t always made the right decisions, but one thing about his life he’ll never regret is his son Jaydin. While at the hospital for his four-year-old’s tonsillectomy, he encounters Jaydin’s nurse, Ivan Ramsey. Tucker is taken aback, however, when he discovers he’s been assigned to investigate the potential murder of Ivan’s mother.

Ivan Ramsey is a pediatric nurse, and he loves his job more than life. Raised in a devoutly religious family, he’s not yet out to a lot of people, but on the very night he chooses to come out to his mother, she dies tragically in a house fire. Devastated by the news, Ivan all but falls to pieces, and to make matters worse, a cocky, know-it-all police detective shows up asking nosy questions. The cop implies his mother’s death might not have been an accident and even infers a family member might be responsible.

Tucker and Ivan at first clash. Their strikingly different personalities are oil and water, but soon they begin to work together to determine the real cause of Ivan’s mother’s death. In the process, sparks begin to fly and a romance ignites. Ivan falls hard, not only for the sexy detective but also his adorable son.Tucker, equally smitten, has made some discoveries he can’t yet reveal to his lover. There are so many loose ends and unanswered questions for both of them, and when the truth finally comes out, it just might tear them apart.

This was a sweet story about family and love.  Ivan loves kids and working in the pediatrics unit in the hospital is the perfect place for him.  Tucker can’t help but think about his son’s nurse even though he knows he should keep his distance especially because of his job.

Ivan makes some assumptions about Tucker and his life that he soon learns are not quite valid.  Tucker is trying to solve the murder of Ivan’s mother and keep Ivan in his personal life.  Ivan needs something stable in his life when everything seems to go wrong at once and Tucker seems to be that person.

I felt so bad for Ivan when he got the news about his mother’s murderer and feeling what he portrayed as Tucker’s betrayal.  I loved that Tucker has an endless amount of patience with his son and with Ivan.  While I really liked the story the further I got into it the more name mix ups and misspellings that kept coming up and it unfortunately took away from my enjoyment of the story a bit.

Cover art by Louca Matheo is nice and gives nice visuals of Ivan, Tucker and Jaydin.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Interview with Cari Z

How much of yourself goes into a character?

I can always tell the characters I personally resonate with most, because they’re not big and bold. They’re usually fairly quiet and tend to get things done without a lot of fuss, and they’re also complete badasses with at least one odd and unique skillset. *ahem*

Do you feel there’s a tight line between Mary Sue or should I say Gary Stu and using your own experiences to create a character?

I think it’s important for a character to be relatable, which often means not using a really personal anecdote or interesting incident from my own life, because really, how many people have been alligator wrestling? On the other hand, people read to experience new things, and so a judicious amount of my own life and personality needs to make it in there, especially if I’m relating something odd.

Does research play a role into choosing which genre you write?  Do you enjoy research or prefer making up your worlds and cultures?

I love research and making up my own worlds and cultures! This is probably why I write so few novels in the contemporary genre—I mean, yeah, I could Google Map Philadelphia and ask for beta readers to make sure I get it right, or I could research rainforests and jungles and then stick my main characters on an alien planet with, you guessed it, rainforests and jungles!

Has your choice of childhood or teenage reading genres carried into your own choices for writing?

I loved historical fiction as a teen. Really, desperately loved it. Only later, when I actually went to write it for myself, did I realize how damn complicated that genre is. That hasn’t stopped me, persay, but it does make other stories more attractive sometimes.

Have you ever had to put an ‘in progress’ story aside because of the emotional ties with it?  You were hurting with the characters or didn’t know how to proceed?

I’ve had to put “in progress” stories aside due to complete and utter bafflement at what happens next, but only once have I put one away for emotional reasons. I wrote 70k in three weeks, the fastest I’ve ever gotten any story down, then got to a huge shift in the plot and realized I was depressing myself so much I couldn’t continue.

Do you like HFN or HEA? And why?

I write stories with romance, so those conventions are not only anticipated, they’re demanded. That being said, I tend to go more HFN, because I don’t draw out endings and tend to stuff my romances full of adventure and thrills too.

Do you read romances, as a teenager and as an adult?

Oh yeah. Classics. Fanfic. Contemporary authors who aren’t me. I read it all. GIVE IT TO ME!

Who do you think is your major influence as a writer?  Now and growing up?

Huh. Well, as a teenager I wanted to write my own Horatio Hornblower books, so I’d have to say CS Forester was a huge influence. As an adult, I read very scattershot all over the place, everything from high fantasy to weird science, so if anything, eclectisism is my guide now.

How do you choose your covers?  (curious on my part)

Usually I don’t have a lot to do with my own covers. I tell the art department what I want and they provide something glorious and I’m very happy. With the cover for Off The Beaten Path, though, I didn’t like any of the models they sent me. I felt awful for complaining, but they were incredibly cool about it, and eventually I got to pick my own model. Hence the delightful man gracing the cover now 😊

Do you have a favorite among your own stories?  And why?

It changes! I like all of my work, even the early stuff because darn it, I learned from it and it helped me grow, but I’ve got to confess I’m especially fond of my science fiction romance Changing Worlds, which is also with Dreamspinner. I wrote it after doing the Peace Corps, and it encapsulates better than any of my other books the emotional dissociation I felt at the time. It’s one of my most true-to-my-life novels, despite being set on an alien planet.

What’s next for you as an author?

After Off The Beaten Path comes out, I have a break before the third and fourth books in the Bad Behavior series I’m writing with L.A. Witt come out in January. Which gives me time (maybe, what with a new baby due to arrive tomorrow, literally) to write a possible sequel for Off The Beaten Path!

Blurb

When Ward Johannsen’s little girl Ava shifted into a werewolf, she was taken into custody by the feds and shipped off to the nearest pack, all ties between father and daughter severed. Ward burned every bridge he had discovering her location, and then almost froze to death in the Colorado mountains tracking her new pack down. And that’s just the beginning of his struggle.

Henry Dormer is an alpha werewolf and an elite black ops soldier who failed his last mission. He returns home, hoping for some time to recuperate and help settle the pack’s newest member, a little pup named Ava who can’t shift back to her human form. Instead he meets Ward, who refuses to leave his daughter without a fight. The two men are as different as night and day, but their respect for each other strikes a spark of mutual interest that quickly grows into a flame. They might find something special together—love, passion, and even a family—if they can survive trigger-happy pack guardians, violent werewolf politics, and meddling government agencies that are just as likely to get their alpha soldiers killed as bring them home safely.

About the Author

Cari Z was a bookworm as a child and remains one to this day. In an effort to combat her antisocial reading behavior, she did all sorts of crazy things, from competitive gymnastics to alligator wresting (who even knew that was legal!) to finally joining the Peace Corps, which promptly sent her and her husband to the wilds of West Africa, stuck them in a hut, and said, “See ya!” She also started writing then because what else are you going to do for entertainment with no electricity? She writes award-winning LGBTQ fiction featuring aliens, supervillains, soothsayers, and even normal people sometimes. You can contact Cari at carizabeth@hotmail.com. In fact, please do. She’d love to hear from you.

Mate, family, pack, home… can Quinn and Kellan have it all?

Quinn grew up feeling out of place in the small town he calls home. Yearning for something he can’t name, he’s always felt different but never known why.

Kellan is part of a nomadic shifter pack. When they set up camp in the woods near Quinn’s town, the humans are unwelcoming and suspicious of the newcomers. The moment Kellan catches sight—and scent—of Quinn, he knows Quinn is special. But for the first time in his life, Kellan can’t trust his instincts. Quinn is human, and Kellan is a wolf shifter, so how can they ever be mates?

Their bond is instant and exhilarating. It breaks Quinn’s heart to know their relationship can only be temporary. Love isn’t enough when pack law forbids shifters to mate with humans. Tension explodes between pack and humans, and when Quinn discovers a shocking truth about himself that changes everything, he fears he’ll have to choose between the only life he’s ever known and the man he loves.

About Rank & File

Senior Chief Will Curtis is as straitlaced as they come. While his fellow Sailors have partied their way through their enlistments, he’s had his eye on the prize—making master chief and retiring after thirty years of service.

Lieutenant Brent Jameson is a Navy brat turned Annapolis grad. He’s lived and breathed the military his whole life, and he knows he’s destined for great things—once he’s done paying his dues at the bottom of the ladder.

When their paths cross, both men know better than to give in to temptation, but that doesn’t stop them. It also doesn’t keep them from coming back for more, even though being discovered would sink their careers. Something has to give—Will can retire, Brent can resign, or they’ll both face court-martial.

But there’s also the option neither wants to acknowledge: jump ship and walk away from each other instead of ending their careers over a fledgling relationship. And they should probably decide before they fall in love.

Except—too late.

Taylor Brooke on Inspiration and her latest novel Fortitude Smashed. (guest post, excerpt and giveaway)

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Taylor Brooke here today talking about the inspiration behind Fortitude Smashed.  Welcome, Taylor.

Somewhere Else – The Story Behind The Hollow by Taylor Brooke

Fortitude Smashed is full of Laguna Beach staples – Main Beach, The Whitehouse, The Saloon, The Koffee Klatch. These native hot spots are routinely visited by locals and tourists alike, supplying cocktails, appetizers and daily doses of caffeine. However, there is one place that lives in the pages of Fortitude Smashed that most people will probably give my imagination all the credit for. I mean, how could a giant treehouse be hidden in Laguna Canyon?

Surprise. The Hollow is real.

A friend of mine found it after deviating from an established hiking trail and bush-whacking his way through the dense Laguna Wilderness Park over spring break. I didn’t believe him at first, or I guess I didn’t know what to believe. I asked myself how a treehouse that big, how something that cool, could’ve hidden from us all this time. The answer presented itself when he tried to show me where it was: Make it almost impossible to get to.

The Hollow was a place that demanded to be stumbled upon, and stumble we did. There really was a fence with a hole to crawl through, though, and there really was a game trail that led through a break in the tree line. When we finally got to it, my friend said, “I told you so,” and I said, “Who else knows about this?”

The tire swing dangled by a frayed braided rope that would obviously snap if someone tried to play on it, and the rusted car was littered with cigarette butts, beer bottles and Del Taco salsa packets. The Hollow was magnificent, though. Despite the questionable rigging and the litter left behind by partiers, the cluster of treehouses tucked away in the forest seemed like a promise fulfilled. To me, it proved that magic was real. It was a secret place that we could claim, and claim it we did. We fixed the tire swing, carved our names into the biggest tree and spent many nights howling at the moon, doing things we weren’t supposed to, in a place that wasn’t supposed to exist.

We didn’t know if anyone else knew about it. But whoever did happen to know was never there at the same time we were. We found clues – cigarette packs that weren’t ours, liquor bottles we hadn’t left, new carvings in the tree with names we didn’t recognize. Being a teenager was like running with a pack of wolves. I had my pack, others had theirs, and we shared one magical, strange hideout that blurred the lines between reality and somewhere else.

I live in Central Oregon now, and I have to admit, I miss somewhere else. I wonder if it’s still there.

Here is a deleted scene from Fortitude Smashed. Aiden, Shannon, Daisy and Chelsea take a trip to The Hollow the morning of Aiden’s twenty-third birthday:

The Hollow was a place for secrets.

There were flourishing lakes of wide awake flowers, luminous yellows and tangy oranges, lavender and periwinkle, and heartbeat reds. The trees, full and overpowering, reached every direction with long, leafy arms. Copper leaves danced with springy ferns, and cat tails swayed alongside bristled cacti. Secret upon secret upon secret transformed with the seasons. The muted leaves that crunched beneath their feet in winter had been replaced by lively moss and long grass. The rusted car, crowded with weather-worn party favors, was home to vines climbing the hood, looped through the glassless windshield.

“It’s gorgeous.” Chelsea sighed. She stared up at the tree houses, the rope ladder, the deck, the tire swing, and shook her head. “Is it safe?”

“Yeah, it’s safe,” Shannon said, sipping on a large 7-Eleven soda.

Daisy picked through a bag of mixed nuts and held it out to Chelsea.

Chelsea tossed a cashew in her mouth. “Look at that,” she whispered, taking long strides toward the carved-up tree, branded with memories. Daisy trailed after her.

Shannon watched Aiden circle a bushel of honeysuckles. His blue vans looked strange, such a startling replacement to his combat boots. But that might’ve been the only startling thing about him now. The rest of him, black tank and dark washed jeans, sharp edges and clever eyes, were pleasant familiarities.

Aiden sat in a patch of light that beamed between trees, plucking honeysuckles and sucking on their stems. Shannon took slow steps, drawing out the image in front of him. Aiden’s camera around his neck, his gaze flicking from the flower to Shannon, and his smile, warm and comfortable, parting as he said, “What’re you looking at, Detective?”

FORTITUDE SMASHED ~ SUMMARY

After scientists stumbled across an anomalous human hormone present during moments of emotional intimacy, further research created the ability to harness the direction of living energy and pinpoint when two lines will merge. Personalized chips are now implanted beneath the thumbnails of every infant, where glowing numbers count down to the moment they will meet their soul mate. Fate is now a calculation.

But loving someone isn’t.

When Shannon Wurther, the youngest detective in Southern California, finds himself face-to-face with Aiden Maar, the reckless art thief Shannon’s precinct has been chasing for months, they are both stunned. Their Camellia Clocks have timed out, and the men are left with a choice—love one another or defy fate.

FORTITUDE SMASHED ~ EXCERPT

Shannon’s first instinct was to call for backup. It’s what he should’ve done.

Instead, he slid his hand around the door and pulled it open; his other hand rested on his holstered gun.

The scent of oil paint and clay wafted strong in the stillness. The room was too open, a wide space with nowhere to hide. Shannon took a step, another, and glanced at the desk, where abstract patterns swirled on the screen of a hibernating computer next to a dimmed, decorative lamp.

Movement. Footsteps, heel to toe, slow and quiet, behind him.

Shannon swung around. Someone—the thief—gasped. He grabbed the fabric of a shirt and shoved whoever was wearing it against the wall.

“You’re under arrest,” he growled. The body, a man, squirmed and cursed. The one time he didn’t play it safe and call for backup was the time he might need it. Shannon forced the thief’s hands against the wall. “Spread your fingers.”

The thief complied. “Of fucking course.” Shannon heard him rolling his eyes.

“Breaking and entering is a crime, you understand that? So is taking things that aren’t yours.”

“I didn’t take anything. I didn’t get the chance to.” Whoever he was, he was unapologetically bored with the situation. Shannon spotted a bold tattoo on his side where his shirt was bunched up from their abrupt collision. The man sighed. “Can I have my hands back now?”

“No, you can’t, because—”

Shannon’s entire being screeched to a stop. His spine straightened; his knees locked. He couldn’t breathe. Beneath his glove, warmth spread from his right thumb into his wrist. The Camellia Clock vibrated, gentle but convincing, a purr that alerted him to the 00:00 that now read in glowing numbers under his thumbnail. Saliva pooled in his mouth. Heat coursed through him. Blood rushed—high speed traffic in his veins. His heartbeat, steady and then not, pounded in his ears.

He stared at the hand spread out on the wall. On the thief’s right thumbnail, the same numbers glowed 00:00. Shannon squeezed the man’s wrist a little tighter.

A shaky breath quivered from the chest in front of him. Apparently, Shannon wasn’t the only one surprised.

He swallowed, and his grip tightened again before he let go and ripped his hands away. Eyeing Shannon carefully, the burglar spun. He had a straight nose and a sharp jaw; he was all angles and edges and pale skin. His skittishness reminded Shannon of a deer—maybe not a deer. The stranger’s lips twitched into a straight-toothed grin under hooded dark eyes. Yeah, maybe not a deer. Maybe a wolf.

A breathless chuckle trickled past a clever smile. The thief gave a slow shake of his head, disbelief and curiosity stitching a genuine expression across his face that Shannon hated. “Aiden Maar,” he said, too confidently to be taken lightly.

Shannon’s jaw was set so tight it ached to open his mouth. “Detective Wurther.”

“Pleasure’s all mine, Detective.” The rasp in his voice made Shannon’s stomach jump.

Before Shannon could yell, or grab, or get another word in, the thief—Aiden—was gone, darting past him and out the door. His head swam. Still reeling, he couldn’t have caught Aiden if his life depended on it. But he was going to have to, because, according to the Camellia Clock, Aiden Maar was his future.

According to Shannon Wurther, the Camellia Clock was wrong.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Jamie Deacon here today talking about their Top 5 Guilty Pleasure and their latest release Caught Inside.  Welcome, Jamie.

My Top 5 Guilty Pleasures

First, I’d like to say a massive thank you to Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for inviting me here today to kick off the anniversary blog tour for my debut release, Caught Inside.

As anyone who has read this book will know, guilt and pleasure go hand-in-hand . My heroes, seventeen-year-old Luke, and Theo who is two years older, know what they’re doing is wrong, seeing each other in secret. Luke has a girlfriend, Zara, who also happens to be Theo’s cousin. Their relationship, when discovered, has the power to hurt people and destroy friendships. But they’re young and in love, and the attraction they feel for one another is too strong. They simply can’t help themselves.

Since guilty pleasure plays such an important role in the story, I thought I’d reveal a few of my own. I’d love to hear yours as well, so feel free to share!

  1. Lazy mornings. I’ve always been rather too fond of my bed. There’s something so comforting about snuggling up under the covers last thing at night, mug of hot chocolate in hand and the radio playing softly in the background. My favourite times, however, are those precious mornings—increasingly rare these days—when I have nothing urgent to do and there’s no rush to get up. I’ll prop myself up on a mountain of pillows, drink endless cups of tea, and lose myself in whatever book I happen to be reading at the time. Bliss!
  2. Jilly Cooper novels. This love affair began in my teens and has continued, undiminished, into my mid-thirties. I’ve read her Rutshire Chronicles more times than I can count. In fact, it was these books that inspired Brookshire, the fictional county in my Boys on the Brink series. There’s just something about her larger than life characters and their interweaving stories that keeps me coming back again and again. Would it be fair to call these novels trashy? Absolutely! Yet, if there were an award for the best researched, wittiest, most compulsive trash, Jilly Cooper would win hands down.
  3. Desserts. Well, everyone loves a good dessert, right? Me? I’m a glutton for anything sweet, so much so that it’s become a family joke. When I was putting this list together, I tried to choose just one dessert that sends my salivary glands into overdrive more than any other, but it proved impossible. Apple crumble, raspberry pavlova, treacle sponge, vanilla cheesecake, sticky toffee pudding, lemon torte… I adore them all, and if it happens to come with a generous dollop of extra thick double cream, so much the better!
  4. Roleplaying games. OK, I admit it. I’m a total geek. I’m just amazed it’s taken me all these years to figure this out, but as soon as I discovered those choice-driven games, the interactive narratives where you get to pick your character and choose how the story unfolds, it was official. Now there’s no going back. At the moment, I can’t get enough of Life of a Wizard.. You can become anything from an arch mage ushering in a golden age for the country, to an undead necromancer taking over the world. It’s completely addictive!
  5. Late-night chats. Even after being together for eighteen months, it feels as though my boyfriend and I will never run out of things to say to each other. Currently, we’re separated by a two hour train journey, and so during the time we’re apart, we live for our nightly phone calls. Of course, once we start talking, we can’t stop, the sharing of news about our day and planning for our future carrying us into the early hours. We both know we should hang up and go to sleep, that we have to get up in the morning, but still somehow end up staying on the line far too long.

CaughtInside

Luke believes he has his life figured out…and then he meets Theo.

It should have been simple—a summer spent with his girlfriend Zara at her family’s holiday cottage in Cornwall. Seventeen-year-old Luke Savage jumps at the chance, envisioning endless hours of sunbathing on the private beach and riding the waves on his beloved surfboard. He isn’t interested in love. Though his rugged good looks and lazy charm mean he can have his pick of girls, he has no intention of falling for anyone.

Nothing prepares Luke for his reaction to Theo, the sensitive Oxford undergraduate who is Zara’s cousin and closest friend. All at once, he is plunged along a path of desire and discovery that has him questioning everything he thought he knew about himself. No one, especially Zara, must find out; what he and Theo have is too new, too fragile. But as the deceit spirals beyond their control, people are bound to get hurt, Luke most of all.

Caught Inside was named a finalist in the 29th Annual Lambda Literary Awards for Best Gay Romance, the 5th Annual Bisexual Book Awards for Best Young Adult Novel, and the 2017 Next Generation Indie Book Awards for Best LGBT Fiction.

Author Bio

RainbowBooks

Jamie lives in a tranquil spot close to the River Thames in Berkshire, England, and has always been just a little out of place—the only redhead in a family of brunettes; an introvert far more at ease with dogs than with people; a connoisseur of simple pleasures in a society intent on the quest for wealth and fame. Despite an outward cynicism, Jamie is a romantic at heart, and, when not immersed in a book, can mostly be found writing emotional stories where young men from all walks of life are thrust headlong into the breathless, euphoric, often painful whirlwind called love.

A MelanieM Review: Drama Luau (Nicky and Noah Mystery #4) by Joe Cosentino

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

Theatre professors and spouses, Nicky Abbondanza and Noah Oliver, are on their honeymoon at a Hawaiian resort, where musclemen in grass skirts are keeling over like waterfalls. Things erupt faster than a volcano when Nicky and Noah, along with their best friends Martin and Ruben, try to stage a luau show. Nicky and Noah will need to use their drama skills to figure out who is bringing the grass curtain down on male hula dancers—before things go coconuts for the handsome couple. You will be applauding and shouting Bravo for Joe Cosentino’s fast-paced, side-splittingly funny, edge-of-your-seat entertaining fourth novel in this delightful series. Curtain up and aloha!

Those LGBT Nick and Nora Charles of the Murder set professors are back in another wonderful madcap murder mystery from Joe Cosentino in Drama Luau (Nicky and Noah Mystery #4).  Newlywed, a set of unforeseen circumstances have led to Nicky and Noah paying for their own honeymoon instead of it being a gift from both sets of parents.  Ever resourceful, Nicky found a resort that gave them a honeymoon  on a beautiful Hawaiian resort, all they have to do is direct the production of male hula dancers on stage.  It’s native dancing ala Vegas style!  What could possibly go wrong?

Well, yes, it is Nicky and Noah, so lots, including the weird murders and mysterious disappearances of the bodies of said hula dancers! Right on stage!  The antics and drama keeps piling up as two Detectives (one male, one female and neither straight) jump into the fray and find true love,  there’s a extreme right wing religious group involved along with the resort owners from hell, a “Bloody Mary” type selling all sorts of disgusting trinkets (really, why doesn’t she sing “Bali Hai”), an adorable poppet, their two close friends from the college and much more.  Yes, the amazing farce is complete!  It’s a laugh out loud romp, with bodies falling,  naughty sexcapades a sizzling, and love a happening everywhere!

As usual, there’s also plenty of heart, with the adorable poppet in need of fathers and a home.  Nicky has some soul searching to do, Noah is way ahead of him here.  Will the two become three and a family by the end of the story?  Hmmmm….that’s one storyline you need to read to find out for yourself.

This is one hilarious series with a heart and it  just keeps getting better.  I can’t imagine what uncharted territory  Cosentino has left?  Wisconsin? Trips to see the parents?  Shakes head. Just the thought leaves me shaking in my shoes.  What would Judy say?  (series reference…read the stories to get it).

I highly recommend them all and please read them in the order they were written for full blown laugh out loud reading pleasure!

Cover art is amazing.  Perfect for the story and eye catching to boot!
