Review: Operation Caldera: PNR/Special Forces/Military MM Fiction (Operation Volcano Book 2) by Annabella Stone

Rating: 4.5๐ŸŒˆ

Did I lose it over the turns in this book? Why yes I did.  Had zero clue Stone was going to take the series in this amazing direction.  Iโ€™m so excited and in for this series.

If you havenโ€™t read this or are familiar here, author Annabella Stone is taking black ops, military top secret missions, explosive situations, alpha military training forces, fated mates, magic, outstanding use and twists on Irish mythology and lore. Legends come to life. I feel like Iโ€™m forgetting something.

If that wasnโ€™t enough.

Stone packs her storytelling with a found family of a black ops unit called Volcano. Then starts expanding her characters and universe with Irish mythology and folding in magical powers and fated mates in a way thatโ€™s entirely different. Itโ€™s pulled together by the steel, strength , and love for the fight for doing the right thing, for loyalty, and brotherhood.

Stone bridges the worlds between humanity and mythology and makes it powerful and believable in the men and their bonds. To the one they love and to the group they call brothers.

Itโ€™s not without elements that had me asking for more exploration or explanation about some areas. Like what happened to the supernatural training that was supposed to happen.

However, Iโ€™m betting it will be a part of the next book to come out next year.

But here? The yes, explosive story begins with *Viper* Dare and his rescue of Archaeologist *Ward* Sutherland while on a secret mission with his unit.

Itโ€™s one wild and crazy thing after another. I absolutely wonโ€™t spoil the twists and surprises but Stoneโ€™s rich lush descriptions bring to life such incredible characters and scenes that you can hear the songs, smell the banquet, and take in the atmosphere that Viper and Hank are watching and are a part of.

Great twists, outstanding characters, and action sequences, vividly captured details and beautiful use of magic and mythology.

Thereโ€™s an Irish dictionary for some of the words and phrases.  Loved that.

I only wish I could zoom ahead for the next bookโ€™s release date.

A fantastic book, grand series and one Iโ€™m highly excited to recommend.

Navy SEAL Kelvin *Viper* Dare was born to be a frogman. Heโ€™s pretty much seen it all over his fifteen-year career, and nothing surprises him anymore. Nothing except an unexpected natural disaster, which sends his teamโ€™s latest mission to hell in a handbasket. Volcanic blasts were not even on his radar when he and his men deployed to search for the newest terrorist to dare bring war to US soil. Now he must figure out how the hell he can protect not only his team, but also the American they find deep in the cave system, which offers their only chance of survival.

Archaeologist Howard *Ward* Sutherland was supposed to be on the trip of a lifetime to study the ancient markings found at a cave entrance on an unnamed island in the Indian Ocean. The further into the cave he moves, the more of the witch symbols he deciphers, and the louder the island rumbles and shakes under his feet. He may not be able to see what is happening on the surface, but the sudden appearance of a Special Ops team, and its growly, bossy leader, tells him things are very, very wrong.

When an ancient power stirs and the veil between worlds cracks, they must choose between duty and destiny. Because some doors, once opened, demand more than loyaltyโ€”they demand your soul.

Magic, legends, and a brotherhood whoโ€™ve been waiting for their High King!

PNR/Special Forces/Military MM Fiction packed with Irish myths and legends, alpha heroes, raw emotion, fated mates, and more.

Review:  Magic Betrayed (The Shifter of Sheridan Avenue Book 2) by Kenley Davidson

Rating: 4.5โœจโญ๏ธ

Magic Betrayed picks up right after the events of Magic Forsaken, the flow almost uninterrupted in the storyline.

Raine is still trying to walk the tightrope between keeping her found family and their past hidden yet work for Callum because they desperately need the funds for food and shelter.

While the reader might acknowledge the naรฏvetรฉ, itโ€™s also realistic to assume that the hardship and fear has made Raine just as desperate as to accept his conditions.

Davidson makes us believe in the story unravels on the pages. The suspicions, fears, and doubts, from all parties exist in this shaky political landscape and paranormal world where there has been such turmoil and infighting.

The growth in the relationships, between Callum and Raine, Raine and Kira, and others is warmly described and real. The suspense and action scenes are vivid and well executed.

My only complaint is the last book isnโ€™t released yet so I need to wait until November to see how it all plays out.

Another recommendation for those who enjoy urban fantasy novels!

Well that didnโ€™t go quite the way I expectedโ€ฆ

So the short version is, I used my forbidden magic. But weirdly enough, Iโ€™m still breathing. Not only that, but I have a job, a great apartment, and a boss who isnโ€™t nearly as grumpy as he wants everyone to think. The only flaw in all this happiness? I canโ€™t leave the Shadow Court. Ever. Which means thereโ€™s no way of finding out whether Callum-ro-Deverin hates my guts.

I get it. Heโ€™s a fan of law and order, and my very existence is now a crime. That must be why, when he does finally return to the city after the Symposium, he makes no effort to even talk to me. I feel like a fool for thinking we were friends. For considering for even one moment that there might be a spark of something more.

But when a mysterious enemy attacks me and kidnaps my family, Iโ€™m left without options. Iโ€™m going to need helpโ€”powerful helpโ€”and Iโ€™m going to have to master my unwanted magic as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately, the only help available is a gorgeous dragon king who may or may not want to lock me up forever. But if it will save my family from a fate worse than death? Iโ€™m willing to sacrifice anythingโ€ฆ including my future and my freedom.

Magic Betrayed is the second book of an exciting new urban fantasy trilogy featuring twisty magical plots, gorgeous dragon shifters, plenty of found family, and a smoldering, slow-burn romance. For fans of K.M. Shea, Shari L. Tapscott, and Heather G. Harris.

Review:  Magic Forsaken (The Shifter of Sheridan Avenue Book 1) by  Kenley Davidson

Rating: 4.5โœจโญ๏ธ

Another new to me author, another urban fantasy universe to explore. Be still my heart.  I stumbled across Kenley Davidson when looking for more strong women main characters and found her name among other writers Iโ€™ve read and loved (K.M. Shea for example).

Magic Forsaken is the first in Davidsonโ€™s The Shifter of Sheridan Avenue urban fantasy series. Itโ€™s a direct sequel to The Dragon of 23rd Street , a 3 book series which sets up the world and some of the characters met here.

However, I havenโ€™t read that series and the author does an excellent job in introducing the series foundation, the issues faced, and world building that I felt secure in my understanding of the story and how the characters were able to use their powers and abilities in the magical system.

Raine, a former human and prisoner of a psychopathic Fae Queen who experimented on both humans and paranormals alike, has fled, along with her found family of fellow escaped prisoners,to a refugee/safe city.

Davidson has immediately crafted a group of characters and situations that the reader will empathize with and feel able to relate to. Raine, in her desperation to protect and provide her family for food, shelter and safety is a great figure from the beginning.

And letting her other secrets (as well as those of the small family members) slowly trickle out during the story is perfect for her and the manner in which she has had to live her life.

Callum, the shifter King and his family is another fantastic element. Each of them has a well defined personality and back history, and their relationships feel like a family bonded together.

The mystery and action scenes are well written. The plot is fast moving. Thereโ€™s a romantic interest but this is a slow burn, with no real sexual content. More magical action scenes and high adventure.

I really enjoyed the energy of the narrative and the characters. Definitely a winner!

I used to be human.

Now? Well, it all started with a fae queen, a stolen car, and a kittenโ€ฆ

Six months ago, I barely escaped the Fae Enclave with my life. Now Iโ€™m on the run, in possession of stolen magic I never asked for and in hiding from everyone in the supernatural community.

Just when I think Iโ€™ve found a home and a job with the notorious leader of the Shadow Court, I end up squarely in the sights of the newly minted king of the shiftersโ€”Callum-ro-Deverin. Heโ€™s grim, heโ€™s gorgeous, and heโ€™s my new worst enemy. He knows something is different about me, and if he ever finds out the truth about my magic? Iโ€™ll be the first on his hit list.

Thankfully, heโ€™s distracted by the upcoming Symposium, where the leaders of all five courts will be gathered to discuss the danger posed by the fae queenโ€™s magical experiments. But when a traitor threatens to disrupt the proceedings, somehow itโ€™s me and my unstable magic that Callum believes can help him hunt down the threat. No one says no to a dragon, but if he finds out who and what I am?

There will be nowhere on earth I can hide from his vengeance.

Review:  High Stakes and Soulmates (Fanged Mistakes Book 3) by Alice Winters

Rating: 3.75๐ŸŒˆ

Honestly, as much as I was anticipating this book, Iโ€™m surprised at that I didnโ€™t find it as enjoyable as I hoped it would be.

The characters of Ezio, a vampire whoโ€™s been a outsized character in the previous novels, and Cyrus, the human detective who has been circling the inner group here and the object of Ezioโ€™s desire, are both terrific in each way.

Iโ€™ve loved how they both have figured into the weird dynamic between the main couple of Casimir and Julian, as well as dealing with their own personalities and quirks.

But in their own story, certain aspects either have been completely changed or in one element, or say twist, overwhelmed the whole story. And for me, the twist just doesnโ€™t work.

It was to convoluted, taking the series, story and character into unexpected territory and creating a โ€œas told toโ€ narrative that bogged down the action and flow of the whole story.

At some parts, it was just page flipping time.

The best part for me? That entire absolutely hilarious dog show scenes. I out right laughed and laughed. Iโ€™d recommend it just for those moments alone. Just fantastic writing and comedic humor.

So for me, this was a mixed bag after loving the previous books in the series.  As I said, read it because of the series, the author, and some hilarious moments not to be missed.

But what happened between Cyrus and Ezio? I couldnโ€™t really get into it.

Ezio

One would think that being over two hundred years old would at least give me some skill at wooing the man of my dreams, though oddly, I seem to be fumbling around more than wooing.

But thatโ€™s alright, I will fumble my way right into Cyrusโ€™s life if he lets me. After a rocky start, Cyrus is finally starting to open up to me as he realizes that vampires might not be all bad.

When Cyrus pulls me into a case, he discovers how much he needs meโ€ฆ and my werewolf friend disguised as a detection dog.

My past haunts my every step, but thereโ€™s nothing I want more than to leave my mistakes behind and focus on my future with the man I adore.

Cyrus

Death after death draws Ezio and me deeper into a mystery that is tearing through the city. My fear is that whoever is killing these people is toying with us, and I know I canโ€™t figure it out alone.

Thankfully, Ezio is prepared to help me with anything I need (and then some), and he doesnโ€™t come alone. He has Casimir (who is happy as long as Steve isnโ€™t around), Julian (when heโ€™s not naked), and Yorick (why is Yorick here?), who are determined to end this. But what we find is unlike anything we ever imagined.

Though it canโ€™t possibly be worse than the delivery lady walking in on Julian naked again.

Ezio is ready to help me through it (the murder bit, not the Julian bit), if only I can leave my fears behind me long enough to accept the man I want more than anything.

Review:  Pack of Dawn and Destiny: The Complete Trilogy byโ€ฏ K. M. Shea

Rating: 4.5โญ๏ธโœจ

Hunter Pip and Alpha Greyson are a great couple here. The dynamic between them and the fact that a hunter was adopted by a werewolf pack is a wonderful way to frame out their relationship and story.

Thereโ€™s several mysteries that come up during this series that must be investigated even as Pip develops her role within the pack and grows stronger as an individual who must learn what and where she belongs.

Sheaโ€™s excellent work in crafting beloved characters and relatable stories shines here as Pip struggles with her perception of her weaknesses among the group of werewolves and her battles with her own ability to accept her role as pack member.  Itโ€™s believable and sheโ€™s engaging as she figures things out. Including her relationship with Alpha Greyson.

Other important characters make appearances here, which is a true joy. Including several who have upcoming series. Watch out for a small black cat!

Shea can write a cook blog or whatever she wants . Iโ€™ll buy it. Iโ€™m that enamored. One note, if youโ€™re looking for spicy romance, this isnโ€™t for you.

Wonderful mysteries, fantastic characters and world building awaits within!

Highly recommended.

Ever feel like you donโ€™t belong? Try being a hunter living with werewolves. Iโ€™m the definition of โ€œdoesnโ€™t fit inโ€. Iโ€™m not Pack, but Iโ€™m not the enemy, either.

I struggle to survive among werewolves who are stronger and faster than me, and are competitive enough to break a bone or two for the sake of โ€œfun.โ€

Greyson, their alpha, is the worst of them all.

Endlessly relentless and twice as deadly, Greyson rules the Pack and expands its territory even though itโ€™s already the largest in the region. I just wish heโ€™d stop interfering with my life. Heโ€™s got enough trouble of his own with his incomplete mate bond, but heโ€™s made it his hobby to tease and test me at every opportunity.

Doesnโ€™t my life sound fun?

When wolves from surrounding packs start mindlessly attacking the innocent humans in our city, Timber Ridge, everything changes.

Werewolves donโ€™t turn feral without reason. Which means someone is making this happen, and theyโ€™re targeting our Pack.

I donโ€™t like where this is going, but how am I supposed to stop a feral wolf outbreak when Iโ€™m just one hunter? Can Greyson and I set aside our differences to see the Pack through this?

Review: Court of Midnight and Deception: The Complete Trilogy byโ€ฏ K. M. Shea

Rating: 5โœจโญ๏ธ๐ŸŒ™

If I thought I loved the first series, this is the one that made me laugh out louder, read passages multiple times, snort giggles, and decide , yup chefโ€™s kiss.

Iโ€™m keeping it.

Truthfully, Iโ€™m binging all the trilogies that Shea has written for the Magiford Supernatural City Universe and while all are fantastic, this remains my all time favorite.

In fact, when the hilarious characters from this Night Court make their unforgettable appearances in the other series, itโ€™s in scenes that make me laugh out loud and want to immediately start reading this trilogy all over again.

Leila, half human, half fae, is the gift that keeps on giving. Her voice and character development here is exceptional. And every single element that I thought Iโ€™d was waffling about turns into something marvelous and magical here in her journey towards finding her own way in the supernatural realm.

That means turning the Night Court into something totally new, eventually.

Hall of Blood and Mercy is full of memorable characters, exploring new magical creatures and areas where this Universe has a mysterious darkness thatโ€™s threatening all magic and those who are associated with it.

Honestly, Iโ€™m so in love with K.M. Shea and her Magiford Supernatural City Universe, this great number of trilogies that I hope will have future episodes to bring to life all the areas we havenโ€™t explored yet.

Highly recommended for all lovers of urban fantasy stories.

Iโ€™ve done everything I can to bury my fae blood and embrace my human half. That changes when some fae nobles show up on my doorstep and announce that Iโ€™m the next Queen of the Night Court.

Becoming an unwilling fae queen? Check. Inheriting a terrible mess? Double check.

The Court is almost bankrupt, my citizensโ€™ favorite hobby is backstabbing one another, and I donโ€™t know who I can trust since someone keeps trying to assassinate me.

Speaking of assassins, I get introduced to the best in the businessโ€”a fae lord nicknamed the Wraith. His deadly profession means he fears No. One.

The only reason he doesnโ€™t kill me on the spot is heโ€™s a member of the Night Court and the Courtโ€™s magic protects me. But that doesnโ€™t prevent him from trading verbal barbs with me whenever we meet.

And if cat herding uncooperative fae while chatting with assassins wasnโ€™t enough, Iโ€™m required to get married as part of some archaic Court law. This โ€œqueenโ€ gig is the worst!

Supposedly I can choose anyone to marry, but with all the infighting I need someone who is unaffiliated and wonโ€™t cause political power struggles.

Review: The Wolf Vs The Shadow Fae: The Hidden City Supernatural Sleuth Book 6 by Lauretta Hignett

Rating: 4โญ๏ธ

The Wolf Vs The Shadow Fae picks up right after the cliffhanger ending of the last book where Prince Romeo had been kidnapped by the fae back to their Realm. Purposes unknown.

Thereโ€™s elements I enjoyed here and others I find that are either getting annoying, underdeveloped, or left dangling, without any explanation.

Letโ€™s take the things that are working against the storytelling for me. This is the sixth book and itโ€™s very โ€œtalkyโ€ as opposed to action driven. Things are talked about endlessly. Especially when itโ€™s the main character of wolf shifter Daphne.  Daphneโ€™s been through years of time traveling abusive experiences as an adolescent to adulthood, slavery etc. Through alien worlds and realms. What she did to survive has shattered her personality into two parts, brain and heart.  They are constantly talking or arguing about everything. Every single situation. Plus sheโ€™s got a Pandoraโ€™s box or world of evil inside of her.

But itโ€™s mainly the two voices. They talk so much she gets nothing accomplished. Which is the point made here. But itโ€™s just as annoying to read. Because while sheโ€™s not actively going forward, the whole narrative is standing still too.  While itโ€™s talking.

Thereโ€™s good points made about how they should have recombined into one a while ago, but still not happening.

Then thereโ€™s a really great case that opens the book. One where Daphne rescues two young kids. And itโ€™s centered around one coven and family of powerful witches. A big event happens at the end of the case thatโ€™s dropped. We have no mention about it and the ramifications of the case. Nothing.  Sigh.

Last big issue Iโ€™ll bring up is that Daphneโ€™s horrific history in the Fae realm isnโ€™t consistent with her current experiences here. I understand parts of the Fae situation changed, still there should be more representation of that dark history than what is seen here.

Positives.  The cases and revelations concerning Romeoโ€™s background. Daphneโ€™s interactions with the other participants in the Bride races as well as the brutal races themselves.

Those were exciting moments.

Still enjoyable but Iโ€™m not as engaged as I was at the beginning.

Review: Hall of Blood and Mercy: The Complete Trilogy by K. M. Shea

Rating: 5โญ๏ธโœจ

Iโ€™m finished with two of these series and seriously considering a wall of shelves devoted just to K. M. Shea โ€˜s Magiford Supernatural City Universe series. Iโ€™m that addicted to these characters, their stories, and relationship dynamics that keep me reading until way too long into the early morning hours.

Hall of Blood and Mercy: The Complete Trilogy by K. M. Shea begins it all with the journey of Hazel Medeis.  Sheโ€™s a wizard with a tragic past, fighting against those who have taken over her house. A remarkable woman who develops with the unexpected power and help of Killian Drake, Vampire Lord . Vampire Lord and Wizard. What a tale over three books!

And it includes the vampires of Drake house and the wizards of House Medeis, all of which we get to know and love in the coming battles. And intertwined relationships.

I laughed out loud at the dialogue and conversations. The action scenes are swift and engaging and magical.

This is where we start to see exactly what and where all the elements of Magiford come together.

And other characters that will have their stories told appear as well.

Imaginative, hugely powerful, funny, romantic and full of characters that I will revisit over and over.

A new urban fantasy must author and universe for me to love and rec!

I’m one scrappy wizard.

As someone with barely a flicker of magic, I’ve spent my life being mocked and surviving fights with bullies. But when my parents die in an accident, and I find myself responsible for our whole wizard house and family, I know my usual tactics aren’t going to cut it.

The situation veers from bad to catastrophic when my backstabbing cousin stages a coup and takes my family hostage.

I barely manage to flee, but the only supernatural willing to help me is Killian Drake–the most feared vampire in the region, and a far more deadly villain than the jerk threatening me.

Is Killian sexy and charismatic? Heck yeah.

He’s also so powerful that my flight or fight instincts kick in every time our eyes meet.

But he is also the first person to believe I might have more than just a scrap of magic. And if I can convince him to train me, I might get strong enough to free my family and get my house back.

I’m not sure what happens when a scrappy wizard is taught how to fight by a hall of deadly vampires, but I’m about to find out.

Review:  His Mate By Allegiance: MM Mafia Shifter PNR (Lunetti Pack Book 3) by Mel Aitchess

Rating: 4.75๐ŸŒˆ

This series is seriously combustible. And addictive. My biggest regret is the long release lag time in waiting for the next book to arrive. Otherwise, mwah, hot, and *fans self* so in love with these mated couples.

This one takes it to the next level.

Itโ€™s a kinky air powerful witch and even kinkier arty werewolf assassin in mate love. In a forced marriage and suspense filled thriller of a story.

More of Rocco and Emmy! I honestly need them in more than this one book. They are fantastic!

Emilioโ€™s brutal family history has been played out over the previous storylines but itโ€™s damage to his character is front row here. Its meshes beautifully with the shaky history and past of Rocco, so when the magical power of the mate bond begins, itโ€™s also powered by their shared trauma and kinks. Itโ€™s sexy, raw, hot and believable for them and the reader.

Both the Lunetti Pack as led by Alpha Marco and the Elemental Mayhem MCโ€™s, who are led by Blaze, President of the MC (witches), are in well written and impactful roles. I canโ€™t wait to see what the author has in store for them going forward. Silas too.

The vampires were curiously absent this time. Iโ€™m betting they will be a huge factor in the next book.

Thereโ€™s so many great elements here. From the side families, to the ongoing mystery and drama to that artwork. I want more.

Highly recommended and fabulous.

The wild in you calls to the wild in me, and if you let me, I will answer. I will always answer.โ€

Rocco is being punished and he doesn’t like it. He probably shouldn’t have seduced and stalked the police chief’s son, but he’d been bored and no one ever should’ve noticed. His powers as an air witch skilled in illusion are too valuable for the Elemental Mayhem MC to let him go, so they’ve forced him into this sham of a wedding. They’re lucky the wolf shifter is so hot or he’d never go along with it. All bets are off once he can prove he was betrayed.

Emilio spent the last fifteen years away from New Trinity City refining his craftsโ€”street art and assassinationโ€”but he’s still loyal to the Lunetti Pack. Unlike his traitor father. He’d do anything for his Alpha. Even marry a witch heโ€™s never met. Coming home for his arranged marriage is the perfect excuse to hunt the source of the dangerous weapons entering the city. He has every intention of being a widower within a year, until he realises his fiancรฉ is his mate. How is he supposed to arrange an unfortunate accident for his husband with his wolf whining about forever in his ear?

His Mate By Allegiance is an MM mafia shifter paranormal romance. It features arranged marriage, fated mates, shadow hands, and other paranormal play, including knotting. There is no mpreg in this world.

Review:  Dark Whispers (The Firebrand Series Book 5) by Helen Harper

Rating: 4โญ๏ธ

Dark Whispers is one of the longest books in the series and a little drawn out for the investigation and cases involved. But itโ€™s ultimately, an entertaining story that makes a statement about bigotry, prejudice and intolerance and its impact , on a large and more personal scale.

Parts of this book arenโ€™t as believable, especially as itโ€™s the fifth in the series, so the actions, both of the police officers and actually the other supernaturals should have been more โ€œtightlyโ€ controlled or just better suited for their roles than was otherwise written here in the dramatic scenes.

And some supporting characters like Emmaโ€™s new DC is little more than a cardboard image at the moment but with the potential for more.

Enjoyed it.

The Supernatural Summit is about to start at the DeVane Hotel in London. Vampires and werewolves, ghouls and gremlins, and pixies and druids have all come together to find better ways to get along with the human community and address the strict laws which govern their existence. It’s a real opportunity to change the world for the better and I’m proud to be a part of it.

But there are protestors camped outside the hotel and dangerous rumours circling about one of the delegates. When a dead body is discovered, I know it’s only a matter of time before all hell breaks loose.

I have to find the murderer. And I have to find them quickly.

Dark Whispers is the fifth book in the action-packed urban fantasy Firebrand series.
