A MelanieM Release Day Review: Manny Get Your Guy (The Mannies #2) by Amy Lane

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Starting over and falling in love.

Tino Robbins’s sister, Nica, and her husband, Jacob, are expecting their fifth child. Fortunately, Nica’s best friend, Taylor Cochran, is back in town, released from PT and in need of a job.

After years in the service and recovering from grave injury, Taylor has grown a lot from the callow troublemaker he’d been in high school. Now he’s hoping for a fresh start with Nica and her family.

Jacob’s cousin Brandon lives above the garage and thinks “Taylor the manny” is a bad idea. Taylor might be great at protecting civilians from a zombie apocalypse, but is he any good with kids?

Turns out, Taylor’s a natural. As he tries to fit in, using common sense and dry wit, Brandon realizes that Taylor doesn’t just love their family—he’s desperate to be part of it. And just like that, Brandon wants Taylor to be part of his future.

Manny Get Your Guy (The Mannies #2) by Amy Lane is a sweet, heartwarming romance.  I’m just in love with this series!  The first, The Virgin Manny (The Mannies #1), with Channing Lowell and Tino Robbins gave us the foundation families and characters with Tino as the original Manny.  It was a terrific story but I have to admit I loved this one better.  Taylor Cochran was a shallow, sort of bad guy in that story.  Here in Manny Get Your Guy Tay gets his redemption, a new family, and a HEA love.  Yep, I’m all behind that.  That’s Tay on the cover with one of the Nica brood and it’s a perfect representation.

Taylor’s horrible upbringing, his deep friendship with Nica, his issues with his sexuality and his injuries while in the service are all brought up and inspected here.  We see what made Taylor act the way he did in the first story and the  growth he shows here.  It’s an incredible range of character development and it works to not only bring the reader closer to Tay but also to make us see just how badly he needs the family slowly forming around him.

Brandon, with his snap judgements, actually was harder for me to like, funnily enough.  It wasn’t until he got over them and decided that Taylor was ok with with children that I started to connect with Brandon as well.

The children here are a real plus!  They are genuine, funny, and their interactions with Taylor made me laugh and sometimes cry.  Amy Lane does this family thing so well, pulling at our hearts with so  many elements in play, children, family, romance and more.  It all works.

It also makes me wonder where the series will go next.  Goodness knows Nica has enough children for 4 mannies.  I can hardly wait for book three.

I highly recommend Manny Get Your Guy.  Its heartwarming, tender, well-written and wonderful.  That cover says it all.

Cover art by Paul Richmond.  This has to be one of my favorite covers. As the most famous nanny in the world would say ” Practically Perfect in every way.”

A Stella Release Day Review: A Destiny of Dragons (Tales From Verania) by TJ Klune

RATING 5 out of 5 stars

Sequel to The Lightning-Struck Heart

Once upon a time, the wizard’s apprentice Sam of Wilds got his happily ever after in the arms of his cornerstone, Knight Commander Ryan Foxheart. A year has passed, and while Sam’s been captured five or six more times since then, things are pretty great. His parents are happy, Gary and Tiggy still eat sass for breakfast, Randall is somehow alive despite being older than the gods, the King rules with a gentle hand, Kevin the dragon is as gross as ever, Morgan sighs a lot, Ryan continues to be dashing and immaculate, and Sam is close to convincing Prince Justin they will be best friends forever.

Life is good.

Until it’s not.

Because Vadoma, the leader of the gypsy clan and Sam’s grandmother, has come to the City of Lockes with a dire prophecy written in the stars: a man of shadows is rising and will consume the world unless Sam faces his destiny and gathers the five dragons of Verania at his side.

And she brings along her second-in-command, a man named Ruv.

Ruv, who Vadoma says is Sam’s true cornerstone.

I was waiting for this book since I finished The Lightning-Struck Heart in the 2015. I was waiting for Sam to take me on his beautiful world with his amazing friends. TJ didn’t disappoint me. He did great, again.

I spent a whole week on A Destiny of Dragons , I dosed the reading not only because I actually didn’t have a lot of time, but I wanted to truly enjoyed each single word. And IMO that’s the key of the success of TJ Klune’s  writing especially in these kind of stories: each word is perfect, each sentences is hilarious, every new chapter is a surprise. The reader can’t try to imagine where he was going to bring us, because everything is unpredictable and over the top. And I can’t have enough.

I couldn’t wait for meet again Gary, he is still sassy and beautiful as ever, still in love with Kevin, no matter what he claims. And then Tiggy, with his big heart and his readiness to smash things and people. But I have a confession to make, someone else stole my heart in this book and it was inevitable, I’m pretty sure no one will be able to resist at a fourteen years old emo snake dragon. I want Zero to be the main characters in the next book in the series. He deserves so much from life and I bet Sam will take care of him, since he is such a good boy. And good boys always win, right? Well I can tell you me and Ryan were pissed more than once with our beloved (apprentice) wizard.

I feel to of course recommend this series, it’s funny, light, full of amazing characters, most of all it’s packed with feelings, every kind of feeling you can think of.

The cover art by Paul Richmond is simpler compared to the cover of the first book and I like it, but maybe  simple and clean don’t fit the story a lot.

Series Tales From Verania #2

A Lila Release Day Review: Something’s Brewing at Joe’s by SJD Peterson

Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5

The promise of a dream job lures Murphy to Tampa, but he arrives to the rude awakening that the offer is on hold. Now he’s got two choices: slink back to Michigan with his tail between his legs or stay and look for work. Things perk up when he goes into a coffee shop and learns the owner is looking for someone to renovate the apartment above it. He happily takes the job, only later realizing he’s met Joe Sterling, Kaffeinate’s proprietor, before… when they hooked up at a club Murphy’s first night in Tampa.

Murphy and Joe are both proud, passionate, and outspoken. Neither is looking for a relationship, though they can’t deny they go together as well as coffee and doughnuts, in spite of their tempers. But that’s before Joe learns Murphy will be working for the corporation he believes is harming local businesses and the environment—and if Murphy will be supporting it, Joe will want nothing to do with him, dooming any possibility of an unexpected happy ending.

Something’s Brewing at Joe’s is a sweet, steamy romance with a side of trouble. From their first meeting, Joe’s and Murphy’s chemistry goes off the chart. They’re both looking for a quick hook-up that in turn morphs into more than they’re ready for. They might not have had any plans for a relationship, but their easy and steady connection kept them coming for more.

There’s a smaller conflict with Murphy’s job in addition to their romance. It is simple, but it interfered with some of Murphy’s decisions, causing him trouble with Joe. At the same time, it brings them together to find a solution that allowed them to get their HEA.

The setting and secondary characters take an important role in the story as well. Everything from Joe’s cottage, the Floridian weather, and the coffee shop create a believable background. Joe’s employees and customers add to the flavor of the book.

The only downfall, in my opinion, was the number of sex scenes. Yes, they go with the story, but they prevented the reader from fully enjoying their connection.

The cover by Reese Dante has an appealing picture of Joe and his gaze is filled with promises. It goes with the books and the artist’s style too.

🎼

Write Music You Know by Kate McMurray

Logan in What’s the Use of Wondering? is my second violinist character. (The first was Everett in The Silence of the Stars.) I don’t think it’s a secret that I am also a violinist, so I had some first-hand experience I could lend to the characters.

My experience is different from Logan’s, though. I started taking lessons when I was nine. I loved playing but hated the pressure my parents put on me to practice all the time, which I realized as an adult was what held me back from becoming really great at it. When I took lessons again in my twenties, and I was grown up enough to actually want to get better, there was a noticeable improvement in my playing when I practiced regularly, and my teacher could totally tell when I’d slacked off.

I think we generally have this perception of artists that they’re just born with their talent without appreciating how much work it takes to be excellent. So I wrote a character, Logan, who works. He’s the concertmaster (lead violin) of the university orchestra. So he’s extraordinarily talented, but he’s taken lessons since he was five, he practices daily, he attends rehearsals and classes and special one-on-one sessions with his teacher. In fact, all that work is cutting into his social life, and at the beginning of What’s the Use of Wondering? he’s starting to wonder if maybe all that work isn’t worth it, because he’s missing out on what he thinks are normal college experiences. It’s making him question this whole plan he’d had to become a professional musician when he graduates.

I played enough in college that I could pull from my experiences when writing Logan. I auditioned and played with small ensembles and then went to music school again after college. But I like doing research anyway, so I would have tried to lend a certain amount of realism to the situation.

I always try to strike a balance between embedding the characters deep in their setting while also still keeping things accessible. So the book is a peek at what it might be like to be a serious musician in college. But even if you aren’t a musician yourself, you can sympathize with Logan’s growing unease that he’s committing all this time to doing something he’s not even sure he wants to keep doing.

And certainly you can relate to what happens when I guy he doesn’t like—who also happens to be really hot—ends up as his roommate.

What’s the Use of Wondering?

WMU: Book Two

Violinist Logan has spent most of his life training for a career in music. But as the pressure mounts during his junior year, he questions whether playing in an orchestra is the future he wants, or one chosen by his parents. His new roommate—that annoying jerk Peter from last year’s production of Guys and Dolls—complicates matters. Crammed into a dorm room with the overconfident but undeniably hot accounting major, Logan can’t stop snarling.

Then Peter sprains his ankle building sets, and Logan grudgingly agrees to play chauffeur. But instead of putting further strain on their relationship, spending time together reveals some common ground—and mutual frustration. Logan discovers he isn’t the only one who doesn’t know what he wants from life, and the animosity between him and Peter changes keys. But just as the possibility of a happier future appears, Logan gets a dream offer that will take him away from Western Massachusetts University—and Peter. Now he has to decide: will he live the solitary life laid out for him, or hold on to Peter and forge his own path?

Tray Ellis on Writing, Books and her latest release, Pyresnakes (author guest blog and excerpt)

Pyresnakes by Tray Ellis

Cover art by Christine Griffin

Available for Purchase at Dreamspinner Press

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Tray Ellis here today talking about writing, books and her latest story, Pyresnakes from Dreamspinner Press.  Welcome, Tray.

✒︎

Hello! My name is Tray Ellis and I’m excited to be here today to discuss my new story Pyresnakes, available through Dreamspinner Press, and for an author interview. So, let’s get on to those questions!

Q: How much of yourself goes into a character?

A: Every character has a little bit of me hidden in them somewhere. It’s nearly impossible not to draw upon one’s own preferences. But, even more of the characters are drawn from all sorts of things I’ve seen or heard. There are plenty of times where I’ll see someone do something and think to myself that I should remember that detail and give it to a character.

Q: Does research play a role into choosing which genre you write?  Do you enjoy research or prefer making up your worlds and cultures?

A: Research is endless and ongoing. Every day is an opportunity to learn something new or pay attention in a new way to something you’re very familiar with. I’d rather make up something and put it into a structure than make up something entirely new. I envy those writers who can think so deeply and keep whole new worlds straight.

Q: Has your choice of childhood or teenage reading genres carried into your own choices for writing?

A: Absolutely.  I spent at least a decade reading a lot of mystery novels, particularly series that followed a central character through many different stories.  I haven’t written a straight up mystery, but I love putting in elements of mysteries. Pyresnakes has one in it and I loved being able to work out the puzzle of how to present it.

Q: Do you like HFN or HEA? And why?

A: I like both HFN and HEA, but I gravitate more to HFN.  I feel like once you reach HEA then that’s the end of the story and you get this deep wistful feeling about that.  If you’re really engaged with characters and a story, with HFN, there’s always hope that there’s more romance and adventure on the way.

Q: Do you read romances, as a teenager and as an adult?

A: I read some romances while growing up, but most stories had romance as a secondary element. It wasn’t the focus. The older I got, the more romance found its way into my reading pile.  There’s so much hope and excitement in romance and I’m drawn to that.

Q: How do you feel about the ebook format and where do you see it going?

A: I love the ebook format. It offers a lot, including the ability to read stories that are amazing, but perhaps aren’t exactly the length that make it to books. Having an electronic reading device means you can carry multitudes of books around with you at a fraction of the weight. I think we haven’t really seen exactly how ebooks will come to fill our lives. As humans we love stories and ebooks make it so much easier to share those stories, but there are still advancements that ebooks can make.

Q: How do you choose your covers?

A: I’ve mostly been a participating author in anthologies, so a lot of my covers were already chosen for me around a central theme.  I’ve really been impressed with those, and how the one cover was able to be meaningful for so many different types of stories within an anthology.  The cover for Pyresnakes was a joint effort.  I was able to make suggestions, offer preferences, give a nebulous sort of insightful vision of what I saw in my head, and talk endlessly about the story components. The wonderful artist who created my cover did all the rest. And all the hard work.

Here is my gorgeous and evocative cover, by the talented artist Christine Griffin:

Pyresnakes is available through Dreamspinner Press.

And here’s the Pyresnakes story summary to get you up to speed:

There is another world existing alongside the one most see everyday, and although it is a place of magic and wonder, the dangers are very real.

Aran, an artist, grew up on his grandmother’s tales of the Side-by-Side world. He never expected his knowledge of folklore would aid his boyfriend, Brandon, in an arson investigation, but the snakes that burst into flames when agitated are something he recalls from those childhood stories.

When Aran vanishes, Brandon knows his time as a State Trooper won’t help find him, so he enlists the aid of Aran’s grandmother, Ruth, and they venture into the Side-by-Side world.

But Aran has no memory of his life prior to crossing between worlds, and he’s enjoying the company of his handsome new companion, Ren. Even if Brandon and Ruth reach him, convincing him to return to his former home won’t be easy. In a contemporary fairy-tale adventure set among forests and trails, Aran must choose between a mystical fantasy world and the man he loves.

Excerpt

The larger of the two snakes at the bottom of the recessed area became more active, coiling over itself, its eyes fixed in Brandon’s direction. He took a step backward, wanting even more distance between himself and the danger, but his careful maneuver caused the snake to roil forward.

He desperately wanted to bolt from the cellar, but he forced himself to remain calm. He had on thick jeans and sturdy steel-toed boots. If he were careful, there should be no problem.

Except the snake continued moving forward, and as Brandon watched, its dark skin began to transform. The black of its scales bled into brown, and the brown kept growing deeper until it turned a dark red. The mahogany red of the snake’s skin lightened until it brightened into russet orange, and as Brandon stared transfixed at its shift of color, he realized one more thing.

Small flames surrounded the snake. Yellow and orange fire licked over its skin, and then the snake blazed hotter. Brandon could now see an intense white burn, and when he blinked, spots of color shadowed against his retina, lingering. The miasma of concentrated heat was extraordinary, and he could feel it against his skin as if he were standing too close to a smelting forge.

He stepped back quickly, gauging the distance to the staircase. The cellar design gave only one way out. No other exit was available. He needed to return the way he’d arrived.

As he pivoted and began to stride, he caught sight of images that sent fear coursing through him. Several more sinuous lengths of heat and flame writhed stark against the dark gray of the solid granite blocks. All the snakes were on fire.

Brandon sprinted. The heat of the burning snakes baked the skin at his nape and the backs of his arms.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to host Jeff Erno here today. Welcome, Jeff!

✒︎

Thank you for hosting me on Scattered Thoughts. I’m thrilled to be promoting the release of my brand new novel, Slim Chance, which is a gay romance featuring a couple of unconventional main characters. Oliver is a twentysomething computer programmer who’s been battling obesity his entire life. His love interest, Benjy, is his coworker, and Benjy carries his own baggage. He suffers from severe social anxiety. With Benjy’s help, Oliver sets out to lose weight and become a new man. In the process, he and Benjy fall in love, but Oliver ultimately must decide if Benjy still fits within Oliver’s new lifestyle as a much trimmer man.

  • How much of yourself goes into a character?

I’ve recently determined that it’s more than I intended or realized at the time I was writing. I’ve never set out to write autobiographies, but I can see at least fragments of myself within many of my protagonists. Certainly in my earliest works—Trust Me, Dumb Jock, and Puppy Love—I didn’t even attempt to conceal the ways in which I related to the main character. Much of the backstory, setting, and personality for each of these characters were drawn from my own experience. As I continued writing, expanding my subject matter, I featured a lot of characters who were very different than me. Then most recently I’ve written a few books featuring older protagonists (Baggage, The Escort, Speedy Rewards) and these stories have characters who are in many ways similar to the middle-aged version of myself.

  • Does research play a role into choosing which genre you write?  Do you enjoy research or prefer making up your worlds and cultures?

I envy authors who have the types of minds that absorb details. I think you have to be like this in order to write a believable, realistic historical novel. I think a lot of it has to do with personal interest. If you’ve watched a lot movies from a certain setting or era, or if you’ve read a lot of books, fiction or non, about a time period, and you have one of those minds that stores all the details for easy recall, then your work is going to appear more polished. In my case, I usually stick to contemporary stories. I don’t have great recall like that. Most of the research I do is about specific things in contemporary society, and most of the information I find online with Google searches. Sometimes I consult with an expert within an industry or a profession.

  • Has your choice of childhood or teenage reading genres carried into your own choices for writing?

As a teenager I read books like SE Hinton’s The Outsiders and a  lot of Stephen King novels. By the time I was a young adult I was reading sci-fi and bestselling romance authors such as Danielle Steele and Jackie Collins. Once in a while I’d lay my hands on a gay-themed story but they usually were not romances. Bookstores carried gay books in the “Gay/Lesbian Studies” section, and most were biographies or non-fiction. Then I finally discovered gay fiction, and this was back in the day when Armistead Maupin, Paul Monette, and Andrew Holleran were just becoming famous. Though they wrote fiction, they definitely didn’t pretend their books were romances. A little later, I joined a book club where I was able to select “gay literature” as my preferred genre and became aware of a brand new set of authors, some of whom actually did write romantic and/or erotic gay stories. My favorite was Chris Kenry. He was the very first author who wrote gay romance that even come close to resembling the kinds we see today in m/m. I think he was published by Kensington, and they were one of the few larger publishers who took a chance on gay-themed fictional stories. Christopher Rice was another author who was writing romantic themed gay stories before m/m emerged. And I could provide a long list of examples thereafter of authors that paved the way for us to transition making gay literature more mainstream. M/M romance actually emerged online out of fanfiction and slash fiction. And some of the early m/m romance publishers (like Dreamspinner—read their history on their website) began with an idea to publish romance books that exclusively featured gay characters.

  • Do you like HFN or HEA? And why?

Not all my stories are “romances” per se, but they all have happy endings. I’ve never been able to write a story without an HEA.

Do you read romances, as a teenager and as an adult?

I read a lot of heterosexual romances and any gay romances I could lay my hands on, but at the time, there weren’t many available.

  • Do you have a favorite among your own stories?  And why?

Interestingly, my “favorite” changes. It’s sort of like asking me to choose a favorite period of my life. Dumb Jock and Trust Me remind me of my teenage years. Puppy Love takes me to a place when I was deeply in love with a very controlling man—it’s very bittersweet. Baggage contains every ounce of regret I’ve ever felt in my life and feels like a baring of my soul. Speedy Rewards reminds me of a group of coworkers I loved with all my heart. The story I probably would choose as the one I want to be most remembered is Final Destiny. It’s not the most read or highest rated, and it’s not a romance, but I think it’s my best work.

  • What’s next for you as an author?

I just completed an m/m romance featuring a pediatric nurse and a police detective who fall in love while working together to solve a murder case. I’ve started a YA novel featuring a teenager with telekinetic powers who uses a magical remote control gifted to him by his witchly aunt to attract a boyfriend. I also just finished a Christmas story and have a dystopian, a BDSM erotic story, and another romance in the works.

Blurb

Can a man improve his appearance without losing everything good inside him?

Oliver has always been obese and suffered from a negative body image. He’s tried diets before, failing time after time, but he vows this time will be different. As he begins an exercise program, his confidence increases—and so does his interest in his friend and coworker Benjy. Though they bonded long ago over a love of online gaming, it takes a lot of courage for Oliver to share his new body and be intimate with another man.

A passionate romance blooms, but as Oliver nears his goal, it seems he doesn’t need Benjy—with his chronic anxiety and troubled past—now that he’s made attractive new friends at the gym. But not all relationships are equal, and Oliver realizes that Benjy, who loved and supported him when no one else did, is more than a reminder of his old life.

A pleasing appearance means nothing when it hides a lonely, empty heart, and if Oliver cannot decide what’s truly important, he’ll lose what he cherishes most.

A Stella Release Day Review: Texting, AutoCorrect, and a Prius by M.A. Church

RATING 4,5 out of 5 stars

Clay McDonald finds the perfect car on Craigslist and is quick to send the seller a text:

Is your penis still for sale?

AutoCorrect strikes again. Damn—he should’ve proofread. How embarrassing.

Luckily Darrell Anderson, a mechanic and the owner of the Prius, is more amused than offended, and the two men agree to meet. When they do, the attraction is instant, and a date is arranged. But a series of mishaps, misunderstandings, and misplaced assumptions sorely test the new relationship.

In a contemporary romantic comedy about the perils of technology and dating in the modern world, a text that went so wrong might just lead to something so right—but only if Clay can refrain from jumping to conclusions and give love the benefit of the doubt.

I simply adored this new release by MA Church! Texting, AutoCorrect and a Prius was in IMO an amazing story, everything I want to find in a novellas like this one, light and funny and sweet. I picked it because I was intrigued by the title and the blurb. And I think it was  exactly what I needed.

The characters of Darrell and Clay were very well done, I liked both of them as soon as I met them, and then later they were hot together and I felt how much they were actracted and how crazy they acted on it. Probably things went a little too fast but it was right that way to me, it worked great. Yes, these men were stupid too when they let some misunderstanding come between the beginning of a potential love story, but you know what? It was right. Beause we are pretty stupid in RL too.

Althought the story is just one hundred pages, I feel satisfied from what I get to know about the MCs, I found interesting second one, I was happy with the HFN. I think everything was well balanced. I like all the elements of the story plus the characters were plenty over thirty years old and this is one more thing I want to read about.

In the end, Texting, Autocorrect and a Prius was a winner to me, I feel to recommend it to everyone who like me want a light and well written story with instalove and humor.

I like the cover art by Alexandria Corza, it is simple and fits the story.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Pyresnakes by Tray Ellis

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Pyresnakes by Tray Ellis has a very neat premise, some elements of fascinating world building and an execution in the storytelling that just doesn’t rise to meet either of those to the potential indicated.  It comes close at points and the author’s imagination really soars with the creation of the Pyresnakes and the Side by Side world.  Those snakes are a magical touch, combusting into flames when threatened and called, lying harmlessly about when not.  I especially loved the reason behind their name and their role in the Side by Side universe.  Made perfect poetic sense as did their reason for being in the “normal” one.

What didn’t make sense?  Brandon’s reaction to the whole “snakes on fire” thing. Even after seeing them in action, he’s almost lackluster about such an astonishing creature.  Even after Aran tells him about their mythology.  In fact, Brandon’s easy acceptance and lack of incredulity, amazement, any believable reaction here made me quickly lose interest in him as a character.  I didn’t believe in his relationship to Aran simply because it felt as though the man had no honest emotions.  The word I’m looking for is cardboard.

I adored Ruth and the denizens of the Side by Side world.  Far more interesting than this one, including Ren and his brand of revenge and justice.  Just couldn’t understand by Aran wanted to return to Brandon myself.  Ellis didn’t ever deliver a real relationship between the two of them before Aran disappears so again the reader is at odds to figure out why we should root for Aran to return to Brandon when everything in the Side by Side world is far more interesting and in tune with Aran then the one he left behind.

How he finds Aran is a neat little tale on its own but the reunion?  Bland and sort of anticlimactic.  The romance alone would get 2 stars because there just doesn’t feel like any connection between the MCs. What saves this story is the world building and creations here.  Told from both povs, we travel with Aran in the Side by Side world as well as with Brandon in the ‘regular” universe, keeping tabs on both as the search for Aran continues, Aran’s memory loss deepens and Ruth and Brandon get increasingly desperate to find Aran.  Aran’s journey is magical as is everything he sees.  There’s the story, it’s his road we want to be on, his and Ruth his grandmother.  A wonderful thing in a fantasy, a sad thing to say in a romance.

If this sounds like something you would enjoy, grab it up.

Cover Artist: Christine Griffin is dramatic and covers a scene in the story. Well done.

An Ali Release Day Review: Model Investigator (Haven Investigations #3) by Lissa Kasey

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
With his lover, Kade, missing, androgynous former model turned private investigator Ollie Petroskovic is ready to kick some ass to bring him home.

Ollie and his ex, rock star Jacob Elias, need to find Kade and free him from the clutches of his manipulative family. But with Ollie suffering from chronic migraines and Jacob unable to bear loud noises, they are hardly the dynamic duo. It takes a lot of sweet talking on the part of Jacob, and patience Ollie doesn’t have, to find Kade. Only Kade’s not whole anymore. The fight for Kade’s heart and mind is far from over.

It’s Ollie’s turn to guide Kade through nightmares, self-doubt, and PTSD. Kade’s memories are scattered, fragmented with possible horrors, and he’s not quite sure what is real. Ollie will have to draw on his investigative skills to clear Kade of the terrible accusations his family has made and help Kade unlock the truth. But in doing so, he ignores his own health, which could have catastrophic consequences for everyone, especially when digging up the past could be lethal for them all.
This book picks up a little over a month down the road from when the last book ended.  Kade is still gone and Ollie is doing horribly.  He’s having physical problems from his injuries and he’s barely functioning emotionally. His friends have stepped up and are helping in every way they can but Ollie knows something has to give soon.  As the story goes on they get Kade back but things are still really bad for both men and they have some serious struggles ahead of them.
One of my favorite things about this book was how well Kade and Ollie communicate and how they work through their problems together.  I think this author does a great job of showing people being in a healthy relationship.  They each have some issues but they work together to solve them and they are a true partnership.
I enjoyed the plot for the most part but I found myself a little confused in places in regards to the plot with Kade’s family.  It took a whole lot of suspension of reality to follow it.  There were some big reveals in regards to that and while some plotlines were wrapped up but one major one still to go.  This one ends with a mild cliffhanger (not a big one like last book).
This book does not work as a standalone.  You would need to be caught up on the series to understand what was going on here.  Overall, I enjoyed this and I definitely recommend it to fans of this series.
Cover art: The cover was done by Garrett Leigh.  I have mixed feelings about the cover.  I think it looks great and I love the artistry of it. It also ties in really well with the previous two books.  On the flip side though the model doesn’t like either of the MC’s at all.

An Ali Release Day Review: Coach’s Challenge (Scoring Chances #5) by Avon Gale

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5
It’s been decades since blackmail forced Troy Callahan to retire from playing professional hockey, and he’s built a successful career behind the bench. When he’s offered the opportunity to coach the Asheville Ravens—the most hated team in the ECHL—he’s convinced that his no-nonsense attitude is just what the team needs to put their focus back on hockey. But Troy is disheartened when he finds out the Ravens have signed Shane North, a player known for his aggression—especially when Shane’s rough good looks have Troy thinking inappropriate thoughts about a player, even if he’s set to retire at the end of the season.

Shane’s career in the majors never quite took off. Wanting to quit on his own terms, Shane agrees to a one-year contract with the Ravens and finds himself playing for a coach who thinks he’s an aging goon, and with a team that doesn’t trust him, Troy, or each other. Despite his determination not to get involved, Shane unwillingly becomes part of the team… and is just as unwillingly drawn to the gruff, out-and-proud coach. As the Ravens struggle to build a new identity, Shane and Troy succumb to the passion that might cost them everything.
This was a really fun and entertaining read.  It was a lighter installment than the last two books in the series and it was nice to get back to the easy flow of the first books.  Troy and Shane are a bit older and their relationship is different in that it’s a coach/player dynamic.  Fortunately the way it was done didn’t leave any creepy power imbalance vibes.  Shane was older and close to retiring so he seemed like an equal to Troy.  They were both also snarky and funny and I think I laughed out loud more in this book than any of the others.  If you are a hockey fan you will really appreciate some of the remarks (& if not you’ll still be entertained).
I enjoyed the humor and the easy way they came together.  It’s nice to find romance books without all the angst and drama sometimes.  My only complaint though was that these two were so snarky and teasing with each other that I didn’t feel a strong connection.  I know that was their personalities but I wanted to see some sweet or loving or romantic declarations during their intimate times but we didn’t really get that.  I new really felt a love match between them.  A great friendship and some smexy times yes, but I wasn’t feeling the love even by the end.
This can be read as a standalone.  There are some cameos by Isaac/Laurent and Misha/Max (which is always a treat) but this storyline works just fine on it’s own.  We get to know a few other teammates a bit better and hopefully we’ll be seeing some of them getting their own books down the road.
If you’re a fan of the series I think you will enjoy this.  If you are knew to this series, this one wasn’t my favorite, but it was still really enjoyable and I would recommend it.
Cover:  This cover was done by Aaron Anderson.  I loved this cover and I think that this series has some of the best covers in the genre.  They are artistically striking but they also really represent not only the plot of the books but of the sport itself.  Every one has been fresh and different but equally good.
