A MelanieM Release Day Review: Catching Heir by Julia Talbot

Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5

catching-heir-by-julia-talbotIs he in love with an old hotel—or its new owner?

Professional snowboarder Cullen Patrick is successful and kinda famous. So when he inherits an old Colorado hotel from an unknown relative, he really should leave well enough alone.

Matt Nathanson has been managing the Treeline Estates since college. He loved the elderly former owner, and he stands to inherit the place if no one claims it in the next week. Of course, Cullen shows up, and Matt thinks it’s time to move on. He doesn’t want to like Cullen, no matter how engaging the guy is, or how hunky.

Cullen has grand ideas for the Treeline, but he doesn’t want to implement them without Matt, and he’s not sure he’s ready to give up snowboarding. Can Matt convince Cullen that putting down roots is worth it… and maybe catch his heir at the same time?

I throughly enjoyed Julia Talbot’s Catching Heir, another contemporary romance in Dreamspinner Press’ Dreamspun Desires series.  It follows a storyline of the lost inheritance and the found heir.  Someone is about to inherit a …fill in person’s heart’s desire…home, ranch, palace estate…you name it and then up pop’s the long lost heir to take it  back.  In this case its a beautiful old hotel, a  grand dame of hotels that Matt Nathanson stands to inherit in 24 hours if no heir arrives to claim it.  But of course, one does in the person of Cullen Patrick, grandson of who owned and loved Treeline Estates dearly and who recently died.

Part of this review is hard to write because as much as I adored the story, its what’s missing about it that nags at me and makes me wonder about those parts I feel are left out.  I really like these characters, Matt especially.  You get the feeling he’s been caught in a time warp of his making and that of Ben Patrick, Cullen’s grandfather.   Ben plucked Matt right out of college and brought him to the Treeline as a young man, a hotel filled with 60 somethings and a owner who dwelled in the past.  You certainly get a wonderful feel for this character immediately.

Cullen too fits that snowboarder image and extreme sports athlete although I wish he had a bit more layering to him.  He needed more a past to match that of Matt,   although they make a great couple.  I like how the author moves him from immediate jerk status to one to comes to appreciate Matt and the hotel.  That’s lovely.  Plus its great to watch the slow process of Cullen easing Matt out of the closed in life he’s lead all these years at the hotel as their romance deepens.

But you know who’s missing?  Ben Patrick..the dead man at the heart of the hotel, staff and who was Matt’s best friend and mentor.  I really needed to get a feel for him and that hole haunts this story, much like his empty room Matt refuses to enter.  We don’t know anything about their relationship all those years, not even a memory.  He’s a ghost that pulls this story down by his absence.

Talbot has given Matt and Cullen a wonderful secondary cast with the hotel staff.  We get a feel of what it is to run something like that as well as set up a snowboard run, all of which was interesting and well folded into the story.  It also helped to authenticate both men and made them believable.  There was a side thread that was less so but it was a flash and then it was dropped.

All in all, a sweet, contemporary romance and another terrific addition in this series.

I recommend it, let that cover pull you in.  Its a perfect representation of Cullen, perfectly adorable.

Cover art by Paul Richmond does a wonderful job once more.

A Free Dreamer Bah Humbug Advent Calendar Day 1: Bite Night by Clare London

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

2016-advent-calendar-daily-delivery-package-bah-humbugCreatures of the Night and Santa’s Christmas duties don’t mix. Every myth and bedtime story tells you so.

But on Christmas Eve, when the Elves walked off the job over pension rights, it was time for me—Irwin, the only vampire on Santa’s payroll, despite recent diversity initiatives—and my trusty team to help out. Just deliver a few parcels, Santa asked me. Just help out on your local patch. Just for one night.

Armed with my reluctance to face all that human sentimentality, and accompanied by a wise-cracking werewolf and an unruly fairy with a taste for vodka, I did my best. Honest.
But we were heading for disaster until I came face-to-face with cute babysitter Benny. It’s Santa’s Number One Rule—no interaction with the clients. But Benny somehow managed to upset my appetite, inflame my libido, and restore my faith in the Christmas spirit, with one cheeky smile and a tasty body piercing.

It’s Christmas, and the show must go on!

I’m usually a bit on the fence about holiday stories, since I neither like winter nor fluff. But the blurb of “Bite Night” proved impossible to resist.

And it paid off. “Bite Night” is a hot, fun read – just the thing to keep you warm during a cold winter night.

I liked the idea that Santa employed not only Elves but also other species like vampires, fairies and shape shifters. The three of them made for a very unique team.

The sex was hot, the dialogue witty and the MCs were likeable. The length was perfect – one very unusual night in the lives of both MCs.

onlyforever400x600

Master Captain Theodore Gourdin has always loved the ocean.   But his devotion to maritime life left little possibility for a long-term relationship. After two failed marriages and numerous unsuccessful relationships, Theo gave up on finding the person who completed him and decided the sea was his soul mate. When offered the opportunity to captain the newly launched megayacht Eternity, Theo jumped at the chance. With Eternity’s maiden voyage looming, Theo focused all his energies on hiring his crew and readying his ship. The last thing he expected was to finally lose his heart in the process.

After twelve years at sea, First Officer Heath Rawlins was restless and in need of a change. A gay seaman’s life could be a lonely one, but to Heath the positives far outweighed the negatives. With excellent recommendations and an impressive résumé, he was quickly offered a position on the private megayacht Eternity. Heath’s heart skipped several beats when he finally met the ship’s captain. He was handsome and charming. And… familiar? Had they met somewhere before? Highly unlikely. But as smitten as Heath was with the gorgeous captain, everything inside him screamed, Abandon ship! Rough seas ahead!

Hi Kids,

scottycadeScotty Cade here. First off I’d like to thank Melanie and everyone over at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for giving me the opportunity to be with you again. I love giving you a sneak peak into my latest books and offer you a little insight into my world of creativity. I hope you enjoy this interview and as always feel free to leave a comment or drop me a line if you have any additional questions. Oh and I almost forgot—read on for an excerpt and a chance to win an eBook.

Here we go:

From where did the inspiration for “Only Forever” come? A memory, a myth, a place or journey, or something far more personal?

Actually all of the above. I’m almost certain it has happened to you as well, but a few times in my life I have met a person that I feel a very strong connection to. It doesn’t have to be romantic, although it can be, but the bond is almost instant. I believe that I have known that person before. We are old souls reconnecting. Am I experiencing a memory? Absolutely. Is it a former place or journey? I say hell yeah. Is it personal? Without a doubt. Without getting all Zen on you, I’m a firm believer that our life here on earth is just one stop along the way in our spiritual journey.

When writing this story, were you a planner or a pantzer? And why?

I’m usually a planner. I’m somewhat OCD and all my ducks need to be in a row for me to relax and clear my head, so I plan my work and work my plan. Now that doesn’t mean my stories always turns out the way I’d planned. Many don’t, but that’s how it starts out. For this book, it came to me so fast I had no time to plan. I sat at my computer and started typing. It’s short of a novel at just under fifty thousand words, but that’s because it wasn’t planned. When I typed “The End,” I could have gone back and added a few more chapters, but it just didn’t feel right. It was Heath and Theo’s story and they deserved it to be without distractions or other useless fluff that might add words but nothing to the story.

Does any genre draw you more than another when writing it or reading it and why does it do so?

Where writing is concerned, contemporary romance mixed with a little mystery is my favorite to write. The romantic mysteries are not my best sellers by far, but I so enjoy plotting them. My easy romance novels are the best sellers. The novels that deal with overcoming struggles, etc. are always a hit. I love writing them as well, but almost everything has been done at one time or another. Over and over again. So finding a way to add a new twist is hard. For the record, I hate angst. Especially in the way of cheating boyfriends or husbands so I normally avoid angst. If the story requires it, I add some, but its usually resolved pretty quickly. When it comes to reading, I love when love crosses boundaries. When people just fall in love with a person, not a sex. Its been referred to as “Gay for You,” so much it makes me cringe. I hate that term, but it is what it is. On the other hand, I believe people are born sexual and society most times determines who we’re supposed to love. It always seems so taboo when a supposed straight man is attracted to another man and I love when love or attraction win. Anyway I digress. But I love reading those stories the most.

If you had a character you’ve written you would write differently now, at this time in your writing career, who would it be and why?

I don’t think I would change one single character of miner. Between you and me, all of my characters, at one time or another, have been criticized harshly. They are either too sweet, too mean, too nice, too handsome, too smart, too insecure, too cocky, etc. You get my drift. Every character strikes a cord with a reader for one reason or another in a negative or positive way, but each of my characters are who they are. They called to me and I wrote about them and that’s that.

Can an author have favorites among their characters and do you have them?

Wow! That’s a tough one. I LOVE all my characters but I connect more with the ones searching for something. For instance, “Losing Faith,” brings too characters together who are both searching for different things. But they help each other find what they need and find each other in the process. That to me is the ultimate. When I started that story I had no idea how it was going to end because I didn’t want it to be a cliché. I didn’t want them to fall in love because it had to be a novel with a HEA. I wanted them to either truly fall in love or become best of friends. Luckily for them, they fell in love and completed their worlds.

If you were to be stranded on a small demi-planet, island, or god forbid LaGuardia in a snow storm, what books would you take to read or authors on your comfort list?

It would sort of depend on where I was and my mood. If I were stuck at LaGuardia, I would be so royally pissed I’d read an SJD Peterson novel. She’s always so edgy and provides a good way to relieve frustration. If I were on a beautiful island or a planet, probably Maris Black. I especially loved “Owing Corey.”

How early in your life did you begin writing?

In my career I was the SVP of Marketing and Public Relations for a large publicly traded company based in Atlanta GA. In that job I wrote constantly. Marketing pieces, ads, commercials, annual reports, branding guidelines, etc. but I didn’t start writing fiction until about seven years ago. My husband Kell and own and Inn & Restaurant on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. We normally head south for the winters, but one particular winter we decided to stay. It was so boring and cold that I had to do something with a distraction. So I started writing a book. I always said everyone has on good book in them so why not write mine. It took the entire winter, but after I finished it I gave it to a couple friends to read and they both suggested I send it to a few publishers. I guess I was one of the lucky ones, because out of three publishers I chose, two wanted the book. I of course chose Dreamspinner Press, which is my only home and I’m thrilled to have them represent me.

Were you an early reader or were you read to and what childhood books had an impact on you as a child that you remember to this day and why?

I was a very late bloomer when it came to reading. As a kid I read what was absolutely required for school, but I was way more into music. With that said, the first book I can remember reading that stayed with me and still does is “The Scarlet Ibis,” by James Hurst. It is the tale of two brothers and written in first person by one of the brothers whose name is never mentioned, but only referred to as “Brother.” He recounts the life of he and his little brother who was nicknamed Doodle. Doodle was born very sickly and was never expected to live past infancy, or sit up or crawl or even walk for fear of his weak heart stopping. But he does. After one horrible scene the brothers bond and “Brother” vows to help Doodle be a normal kid. One day, a big red bird appears in their garden, looking sick and tired. The boys’ father identifies it as a scarlet ibis, a tropical bird that was blown off-course by a recent storm. When the bird dies, Doodle, pitying the creature, buries it. The story has been described as “rich in symbolism.” The Scarlet Ibis is the main symbol in the story, as is the color red and the ibis in comparison to “Doodle” as fragile yet majestic. The storm is often compared to Doodle’s brother because the brother pushed him too hard, much as the storm did with the scarlet ibis. In the end Doodle does not survive and “Brother” finds his lifeless body lying on the ground with blood flowing out of his mouth, staining his throat and shirt a brilliant red. Doodle died like the scarlet ibis: bloody red and far away from home. Recalling this story still send chills up and down my spine. If you haven’t read this book, please do.

Okay so you’ve read what makes me tick, so now tell me what makes you tick. If you’ve had an experience connecting with someone like Heath and Theo, tell me about in the form of a comment. If you do, you will be entered into a drawing to win any book from my backlist.

Now here’s an excerpt. Enjoy!

Excerpt:

Theo and Heath met the crew in the formal dining room, where the chef had set up an appetizing spread. Theo had told Heath he’d requested a buffet because he didn’t want anyone serving anyone else tonight. There would be plenty of time for that later. Tonight was all about coming together as a crew, and Heath was pleased that Theo wanted everyone to be equal and on the same playing field.

When dinner was over, Theo brought everyone out onto the bow. He retrieved the two bottles of Dom from a canvas bag and handed the bag to Heath. From it, Heath handed everyone a champagne flute while Theo popped the top on one of the bottles. When everyone had a full glass of champagne, Theo dug into the bag and retrieved the other bottle.

“To a great journey, a great ship, and a great crew.” Theo looked at Heath. “To borrow a line from our very capable first officer, I wish us all fair winds and following seas. I hereby bring this ship and this crew together as one.”

Theo slammed the bottle against the hull, and everyone cheered and sipped their champagne. When things had settled a little bit, Heath knocked his pocketknife against his glass. Everyone quieted, and he spoke. “The Captain and I asked that you be in full dress uniforms tonight for this very special occasion, but let me assure you that unless we have guests on board, we will be a lot less formal.”

“Thank goodness,” Craig interrupted, pulling at his collar.

Everyone laughed.

“Cliff?” Heath asked when all was quiet again. “Do you have that package I shipped?”

“Yes, sir. Right here.”

Heath looked at Theo, who seemed to be intrigued.

“I took the liberty of ordering some casual everyday attire for the crew.”

Heath ripped open the box and pulled out a pair of teal-green shorts and a white T-shirt that had Eternity running up and down the left front of the shirt.

Theo smiled and nodded. “Nice job.”

“There are various sizes for everyone,” Heath continued. “And Georgia, there are women’s sizes in there as well.”

“Thank you,” she replied.

“I want you all to look sharp every day, but more importantly, feel comfortable while doing it.”

The ship’s crew applauded, and Heath felt a blush coming on.

“I think it’s time for a few pictures.”

Theo positioned his iPhone on the bulwark, set the timer, and ran back and stood next to Heath, draping his arm over Heath’s shoulder. When the flash went off, Heath was smiling broadly, and he hoped the camera captured this very special moment.

Georgia stepped out of the group. “Okay, let me get a shot of our captain and first officer.”

The other crewmembers parted, and Theo and Heath were left standing side by side, Theo’s arm still hung loosely over Heath’s shoulder. Heath turned to Theo and their eyes met briefly. Both their smiles broadened. Theo held Heath’s gaze until Heath turned to the camera and Theo followed his lead.

It was very late. The ship was quiet, the celebration long over. But there was no sleep for Theo. Much to his chagrin, Heath was sleeping peacefully, his breaths steady and sure. The rhythmic sounds were familiar, soothing, and reassuring, but instead of luring him into slumber, they seemed to tease and taunt him.

He’d tossed and turned for the better part of two hours and had finally given up, resigned that it would indeed be a very long night. In the darkness of their cabin, Theo reached for his phone and brought up the camera roll of the evening’s pictures. He studied the pictures one by one, from the beginning of the evening to the end. His crew seemed genuinely happy and excited about their new adventure, and as he scrolled through them, he stopped and gasped. On his phone was a photo of him and Heath. They were standing very close to one another, and Theo’s arm was draped over Heath’s shoulder. They were gazing into each other’s eyes and smiling broadly.

Theo studied the picture for a long time. He remembered posing with Heath for a similar picture. The next shot was the one he remembered. He slid his finger back and stared at the other picture again. Georgia must have snapped this one before they were looking at the camera. And the look on Theo’s face as he gazed into Heath’s eyes was undeniable. He knew it, and anyone who looked at this photo would know it as well. The thing that caught his attention, even more than his expression, was the expression on Heath’s face. He was looking at Theo the same way. He could only describe it as adoringly, with an indisputable twinkle in his eye. Was it just first officer admiration of his captain, or was it more? It looked like more to Theo, but he might be wishing for something that just wasn’t there. Either way, he saved the photo to a private file and deleted it from his camera roll. This one he would keep.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Antonia Aquilante here today answering some of our author questions and talking about her latest fantasy release, The Sorcerer’s Guardian. Welcome,  Antonia!

Our  Interview with Antonia Aquilante

  • Where do you normally draw your inspiration for a book from?  A memory, a myth, a place or journey, or something far more personal?

Anywhere and everywhere. It could be something I see or hear or read, a place I go, a piece of art, an experience, anything really. I think my subconscious gathers up little bits and pieces and then reveals a character or story to me. Part of the Chronicles of Tournai series came in a dream.

  • Are you a planner or a pantzer when writing a story? And  why?

More a pantser than a planner. I do some planning, mostly getting to know my characters and a general idea of where I’m starting and where I want to end up. I figure the rest out as I write. Sometimes I wish I could outline because it seems like it would be less stressful (especially when I’m in the middle of a story wondering if I have any idea what I’m doing!), but it hasn’t worked for me. I’ve had to learn to trust my writing process.

  • Contemporary, supernatural, fantasy, or science fiction narratives or something else?  Does any genre draw you more than another when writing it or reading it and why does it do so?

Fantasy romance is my first love in writing. I really enjoy creating fantasy worlds that people can lose themselves in, and that I can lose myself in too. The Chronicles of Tournai is fantasy romance, and I just love the world and characters. I am currently writing a contemporary with some paranormal elements, though, which is different for me. I read widely in a variety of genres (including all the ones you’ve listed!), but fantasy is a favorite to read as well, along with paranormal and historical. I like to get swept away into another time and place in a story.

  • If you had a character you’ve written you would write differently now at this time in your writing career, who would it be and why?Can a author have favorites among their characters and do you have them?

My writing career is still fairly new, but with every story, I’m learning more. I’m sure there are things I would do differently just in the mechanics of writing, but I can’t think of a character I would really change. I’m sure an author can have favorites, but I think I would feel bad. It might be a little too much like a parent having a favorite child for me!

  • If you were to be stranded on a small demi-planet, island, or god forbid LaGuardia in a snow storm, what books would you take to read or authors on your comfort list?

I can’t just have my Kindle? Because the best part of it is that I can have all the books with me. But, if I have to pick, I’d need books by authors on my comfort read list: Jordan L Hawk, KJ Charles, Megan Erickson, Rhys Ford, Avon Gale, Lisa Kleypas, JL Langley, Heidi Cullinan…I could keep going, but I should probably stop!

  • How early in your life did you begin writing?

I’ve been making up stories for as long as I can remember. Before I knew how to write them down, I would act them out with dolls or draw them. Then I started writing them down and never stopped.

  • Were you an early reader or were you read to and what childhood books had an impact on you as a child that you remember to this day and why?

I remember there were always books around. My mom is a reader, and I think I get being such a voracious reader from her. I remember her reading all the time when I was a child (now we share books). I loved Anne of Green Gables, Nancy Drew, A Wrinkle in Time, and Tamora Pierce’s Song of the Lioness Quartet among many others. When I was about 12, I discovered Mercedes Lackey and Anne McCaffrey and then I read my first romance novel (a Nora Roberts). I still have those much-loved copies of my favorites on my bookshelves. Some of them are falling apart from too many readings despite being careful of them.

Thank you for letting me visit today!

A MelanieM Review: He’s Behind You (Treading The Boards #3) by Rebecca Cohen

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

84cd6-hesbehindyoufsIt’s panto season for the Sarky Players, an amateur dramatics society based in Greenwich, South London. With the traditional Christmas play around the corner, it’s time to get ready for more larger than life performances—on and off stage.

While Craig Rosen is happy with his quiet life playing Warhammer and working in a university lab, a new colleague thinks he needs more excitement and drags Craig along to an audition for the Christmas pantomime, Aladdin.

Corporate lawyer Jason Carter accepted he’s gay a little later in life than most, but now divorced and in his late thirties, he’s ready to embrace who he really is. He can’t believe his luck when he runs into Craig at the audition and the cute younger man agrees to help him navigate his new life. There’s no doubting the attraction between Craig and Jason, but with Craig’s insecurities and Jason still finding his way, they’ll need to make sure they don’t veer off script.

He’s Behind You by Rebecca Cohen is the third book in the wonderful Treading the Boards series which follows the lives and romances of the actors of the Sarky Players, an amateur drama group outside of London.  I loved each one because I’ve not only connected with the couples, each quirky and adorable, but because the author has brought something to my attention that I’ve never known about before in each story.  In the last one, it was a magnificent amphitheater in Cornwall.   Here, in He’s Behind You?  Its the British tradition of Pantomine.  And no, its not what us Americans are thinking of.

Pantomine,  not that silent man or woman trying to get out of a box we normally think of here in the US, is a British tradition started around Restoration England.  A part of Christmas there, “with family audiences, British pantomime… incorporating song, dance, buffoonery, slapstick, in-jokes, audience participation, and mildaboutpantomime innuendo. There are a number of traditional story lines, and also a fairly well-defined set of performance conventions…”. I had no idea!  And now I want to see one performed!   And Rebecca Cohen works it so well into the storyline complete with scripts and costumes!

The characters complement the storyline too.  Jason Carter is a lawyer who was married with a lovely family for over 20 years.  Problem is that Jason is gay.  He was discovering that fact when his gf became pregnant when they were young. Both did the traditional thing and married.  Now Jason, with his ex-wife’s and children’s blessing is ready to discover what being an out gay man means.  And how I loved this part of the story.  Jason has the complete backing of his family, a delightful family we get to know and love.  They support him in every way, believably.  Realistic teenagers with messy rooms and geek hero worship, and a ex-wife full of layers and the ability to move on with love.  Jason has doubts and plenty of flaws accumulated with age and the life he’s lived.  Great job with character building here.

Craig Rosen is also beautifully done, with a heartbreaking background thats filled in bit by bit, intelligent and surprising in his qualities.  I fell in love with him too.  Together, quietly, these two men, making adjustments and finding each other?  Its not explosive, its subtle and it has a wonderful aspect all its own that’s hard to describe.  It will startle you in how much you enjoy them and their relationship, especially thinking back on it.

Finally, it introduced me to Warhammer!  And I thought I had my geek flag flying. Warhammer 40,000 is a tabletop miniature wargame produced by Games Workshop,  is set in a dystopian science fantasy universe.  So cool that I had to start my investigation into that as well.  That’s as fully a part of this story and Craig as the Panto.  And it provides an important link to Jason.

So…what a story!  Its chock full of so many wonderful elements and a quiet romance full of discovery for two men in need of love and each other.

I loved it.  And recommend it and its previous stories.  If like me, you love discovering new things, new places to go with your romances, these books are for you.  Happy Reading!

Cover by Paul Richmond is as funny and pertinent as all the others.  Wonderful.

For two years, it succeeds.

Then Blake flees his bigoted—and even dangerous—hometown.

Two years later, Blake and Dusty are getting their lives off the ground, with Blake trying to grow his computer repair business and Dusty working with kindergarteners. Dusty thinks there’s room in their hearts and their lives for their family to grow… he just has to figure out how to express that to Blake.

States of Love: Stories of romance that span every corner of the United States.

Where We Belong was perfect to me, it fits in it every little thing I love to find in my books. I’m a fan of these kind of stories, where the author bring me along in a beautiful journey through the  MCs lives during a long timeframe. In this new release by Tia Fielding, I followed Dusty and Blake throught twelve years and I learned to love them and their faimily year after year a little more.

Plus I love stories with children.

I saw Dusty the first time he laid eyes on the shy Blake, when both of them were forced to accompain one his best friend Holly, the other his wonderful mum Julia, to an Incubus concert.

The same day they took a hike together and discovered they had the same fierce passion for nature. That same day they discovered they were made for each other.

I saw Julia being forced to throw out of her home his own son, begging him among the tears to leave her, just to save Blake from the homophobic town they were living in. I saw Blake found a new home in Dusty arms with a simplicity lovely to watch.

And then I saw Dusty and Blake slowly working on building a future together, a real one, because there wasn’t a moment when they just for an instant doubted of having a future together. And later the idea of having a child became reality in the little and too smart Molly.

To me Where We Belong was a huge success, it’s exactly what I like to read, there was no drama, no mistakes to amend, everything went smoothly and I’d like to believe sometimes life can be easy and beautiful  like that.

The cover art by Garrett Leigh is perfect, adorable and cute as the book.

A trip down to Cornwall is just what Ryan Penniford needs to recover from the daily grind of London life. Ryan and his amateur dramatics society, the Sarky Players, are traveling to Porthcurno to perform at the stunning Minack Theatre.

Stuart Box has returned to Cornwall after earning his PhD, and is killing time as he looks for a job back in London. Spending time with Ryan from the Sarky Players is a great way to take his mind off things.

During their first meeting, sparks fly, but not in a good way, and they must work to get past their initial hostilities to discover they have great off-stage chemistry. Stuart soon learns Ryan is not the superficial man people assume he is, and Stuart likes what he sees. The feeling is entirely mutual.

Pity Ryan is only visiting for two weeks, but both men want to see where this holiday romance might take them.

A Lila Release Day Review: The Sorcerer’s Guardian (Chronicles of Tournai #4) by Antonia Aquilante

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

the-sorcerers-guardianSavarin, the most powerful sorcerer in Tournai, has honed his Talent through years of study and made magic his life. Among the wealthy and noble circles he moves in, no one would suspect the handsome, refined, and arrogant sorcerer’s humble beginnings, which is how Savarin prefers it. Tournai’s princes task Savarin with studying and strengthening the spells that protect the principality from magical attack. They are complex, centuries old, and exactly the type of puzzle Savarin is eager to solve. To his annoyance, the princes insist Loriot accompanies him.

Loriot worked his way up the ranks of the royal guard to captain and takes pride in his service. He must obey the princes’ orders to protect Savarin, despite believing his skills would be best used elsewhere. And despite his wariness of magic. UnTalented himself, he has learned not only the benefits of magic but also its potential for harm—and how to counter it. Loriot and Savarin clash during their journey, but there’s another reason for the tension between them, and passion develops into feelings neither expected. But Savarin must still fortify Tournai’s magical barrier, and his only solution endangers both him and the royal family.

The Sorcerer’s Guardian is a slow burn romance set in the fantasy kingdom of Tournai. Savarin and Loriot were framed as possible main characters at the end of the Scholar’s Heart. Not based on their romantic possibilities, but on how well they worked together, and their service to the Crown.

That working chemistry continued in this book and their connection showed from the start—intensifying with every page. Their relationship is as complicated as the spells they are trying to understand. It’s refreshing to see a friendship developing between them, and when they finally give up into their lust, their friendship keeps them together.

I love Savarin and his prepotency. It was simply a way to protect his heart, but at the same time, it served him as a tool to hide how powerful he really is. Loriot is the perfect complement for him. He is caring, strong, and takes care of everything and everyone. In this case, Savarin and the relationship they were building together. They become a loving family, and their small touches are a reassurance they both needed.

Not only the romance is slow, but their travels. And therefore, the story’s plot. The readers get a lot of background information, about the main characters and the kingdom itself. All the characters from previous books are present, and even when this can be a stand-alone story from the romance perspective, it’s best if you read at least one of the previous books.

Overall, the story is interesting, the writing splendid, and the MCs relationship lovely. The world-build increases with every book, but stays consistent. The added layers only bring the reader deeper into their world. I’m definitively a fan of the author and the series. Now I just have to go back and read the first two books.

Anne Cain did another nice cover for this installment. It goes with the rest of the series and it shows a subdued Savarin and Loriot.

An Ali Release Day Review: Checking It Twice (The Carlisles #3) by Meg Harding

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
checkingittwicefs_v1Closeted professional hockey player Eric Belanger is falling hard for an out-and-proud male model. He’s unable to resist Dorian’s charm and pushing personal boundaries he never thought he’d cross. But Dorian is the kind of guy who deserves someone who isn’t afraid to be himself. Eric’s fears about what coming out will do to his career clash with the future he hopes to build with Dorian. He knows he’ll eventually have to make a choice.

Dorian Carlisle knows better than to date a man who wants to keep him a secret, but there’s something about Eric he can’t ignore. So he’ll take the risk, and it’ll be all right, because this isn’t a forever romance. He’s happy to live in the moment. But somehow, at some point, feelings sneak up on him and he’s not okay anymore. At a breaking point, Dorian must also make a decision. Their time together will either be the start of something wonderful or nothing more than a happy memory.
Eric and Dorian meet on a photo shoot and are immediately attracted to each other.  Eric is in the closet and doesn’t have the first idea about flirting or dating but he clumsily tries to get to know Dorian.  There was something charming about how Eric bumbles his way through things.  Dorian is a little older and at first has no intention of getting to know Eric because he knows dating a closeted professional athlete is going to make him unhappy in the long term.  As the story unfolds you understand why Dorian ends up falling for Eric and you understand the inner turmoil that Eric is going through.
This story is both a bit angsty and a sweet love story.  I really liked both of the main characters and each of them were really likable guys.  I understood both of the points of view and I felt for both of them.  There are a host of side characters in Dorian’s family and Eric’s family and teammates.  All of them were well done and there were no stereotypical bad guys as there often are in these types of stories.  Some of the characters were ones who were featured in the first two books of the series.

I really enjoyed this book.  I hadn’t read the first two books in the series so I wasn’t sure what to expect but this went really well for me.  Even though I hadn’t read books 1 & 2 I was easily able to follow along.  This book is fine as a standalone.  I liked this one enough that I will go back and read the previous books.  This book is a definite recommend from me.
Cover by Reese Dante:  I like the cover a lot.  I think it is nice looking and the models for Eric and Dorian perfectly fit how they’re described in the story.

The Closet Boy

closetboythefs_v1Way’ra Bernard is only twenty years old when his parents kick him out of the house. He has been brought up to believe being gay is wrong and he is going to go to hell for it. He tried very hard not to be gay but couldn’t change the way he felt. Now he’s living furtively in a closet on the third floor of the place he’s working as a janitor—the Iron Eagle Gym.

Neal McPherson is an unattached Dom in his midtwenties and a member of the gym. One evening after working out, he notices Way’ra on the stairs and he’s immediately attracted and intrigued, so he asks Way’ra out. Unable to come up with a reason to refuse and also interested in Neal, Way’ra accepts.

There are a lot of obstacles to the relationship they attempt to build after their date, not least of which is Way’ra’s upbringing and his lingering doubts about the kinky sex Neal enjoys. But with patience and persistence, Neal might convince Way’ra not only to accept himself, but to loosen his inhibitions enough to explore and find a happy ending together.

Excerpt

He was headed up the back stairs, quiet as a mouse, when a gorgeous stud suddenly appeared at his side. The guy was tall, close to a foot bigger than him, and with the best muscles. He was wearing a pair of sweats and a T-shirt, gym bag slung over one shoulder.

“Headed up too?” Even the guy’s voice was studly—deep and growly.

“Uh. Uh-huh. Just checking supplies.” He kept his head down, his gaze forward. This man was twice his size, easily, and he wasn’t interested in a confrontation.

“Oh right, you work here. I thought I recognized you. Do you like it?” The guy was taking the stairs two at a time, but doing it slowly enough that they stayed level.

“Yes, sir. It’s a good job.” No one asked questions. No one bothered him. No one noticed him. He didn’t exist, and that was just like he wanted it.

“Good, good. This is a good place. It’s nice to know everyone is family.” It looked like this guy was going all the way up, just like he was.

“Yes, sir.” Dammit. He needed to slip into his closet. He had a dog-eared paperback he’d found in the lost-and-found and a cold Coke.

“Do you work out here too?”

God, this guy was Chatty McChatterson.

“No, sir.” Did he look like he worked out? Ever?

“You look like you could use a few sessions. Oh fuck, that was rude, I’m sorry.”

“No worries. I’ll mop harder tomorrow. Have a good evening.” Go away.

The guy gave him a sharp look. “I didn’t say I thought you were doing a bad job.”

“Yes, sir. I’m sorry. I left my… cleanser. I mean, my pad downstairs. Excuse me.”

The guy stopped and put a hand on his arm. “I’ve upset you now. I didn’t mean to. How about I buy you a cup of coffee by way of an apology?”

“Me? I’m the janitor. You don’t have to apologize.”

“I don’t believe in classes. In fact, without you, my enjoyment here at the gym would be so much less.”

The words were dear and made his cheeks heat. “Thank you. I appreciate it. Honestly.”
