November is Ending and So Is STRW FF Writing Month

There are still four days for people to get their entries in.  Four days…to write anywhere from 300 to 1000 words.  What to write about?  Anything and everything.  Any trope, any genre.  From science fiction to contemporary, from romance to horror.  Draw from your feelings about the present day events or something you dream about.  Its up to you.  Its micro fiction…let your thoughts and imagination run free.

Here’s a recap about what flash fiction is:

What is Flash Fiction? Generally speaking its any fiction under 1000 words, although even that seems to vary with definitions from 1200 to 100 words.  Its micro fiction.  Here’s a couple of articles to help you all out:

Earlier our reviewer, Paul B, read and reviewed Flight: Queer Sci Fi’s Third Annual Flash Fiction Contest (QSF Flash Fiction #2), an excellent anthology of flash fiction for science fiction lovers and those who love the short story format.  Flash Fiction, while not new, is steadily gaining in popularity and here is your chance to try your hand at writing a flash fiction story of your own and perhaps make a comment on recent events.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Release Day Review: Open Hearts (Heartland #3) by Logan Meredith

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

open-heartsAsim Bishara is a firefighter in Indianapolis, the city he settled in when he left his family-of-origin behind in New York City after the 9-1-1 attack. He lost his family after he admitted he was in love with Steven, a firefighter who died when the World Trade Center collapsed. He never stopped loving Steven, even now, thirteen years later, though he was a teen at the time, and they had only just admitted their love for each other right before he died. He’s afraid to come out to fellow firefighters, and that, in combination with his inability to move through his grief, contributes to an accident at a fire scene which ends up hospitalizing him.

Finally attempting to have a social life after the death of his husband, Zach, who died the previous New Year’s Eve, Ángel Stanford gets a babysitter for his daughter, Gracie, and heads to a party given by his friends Jude and Sean, Healed Hearts (Heartland #2). There he meets Asim who, he’s been told, is new to the gay scene and needs to dip his toes into the water of casual relationships. But his friends are wrong—Asim is looking for anything but casual, and he certainly isn’t interested in this outwardly effeminate, flamboyant character who seems to be flirting with him.

Not a good start and neither man is happy at the end of the evening. It’s shortly after this event that Asim ends up in the hospital from his on-scene accident, and the part-time nurse assigned to his case is Ángel. Not taking advantage of that, Ángel nevertheless learns a bit about this man, and when they meet again at a bereavement support group, Ángel learns even more of Asim’s story, and yet Ángel is still hesitant to speak of his own grief. I enjoyed the way the author allowed for a very slow burn to the start-up of this relationship, at the same time giving readers their back story and allowing us to learn more about each man in the way he deals with the grief of loss.

This is definitely not a see-each-other-insta-love story, and yes, there’s angst, but it’s very well done and makes for a highly satisfying read. Throughout the course of the months in which the story takes place, we witness Ángel going through the stages of grief for Zach, finally coming to terms with his death, but it’s a long time before he’s able to cope with and act on his feelings for Asim. In the meantime, Asim is seeing a therapist and coming to terms with his grief and his virginal attempts at having a relationship, including finding the patience to wait for Ángel.

Of all three books in this series, I liked this one best. It had much more depth and touched me deeply, tugging on my heartstrings throughout most of the story. It’s a beautiful love story, both past and present. I hope that those who like hurt-comfort or healing from grief stories consider picking this one up. And, although the story includes returning characters from previous stories in the series, that in no way impacts the enjoyment of this one so it can easily be read as a standalone.

Cover art by Paul Richmond beautifully depicts Ángel and Asim with a picture of Ángel, Zach, and Gracie sitting on the table behind them, symbolizing Asim’s acceptance that Zach will always have a place in Ángel’s heart.

An Ali Release Day Review: Summer Lessons (Winter Ball #2) by Amy Lane

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
summer-lessons-by-amy-laneMason Hayes’s love life has a long history of losers who don’t see that Mason’s heart is as deep and tender as his mouth is awkward. He wants kindness, he wants love—and he wants someone who thinks sex is as fantastic as he does. When Terry Jefferson first asks him out, Mason thinks it’s a fluke: Mason is too old, too boring, and too blurty to interest someone as young and hot as his friend’s soccer teammate.

The truth is much more painful: Mason and Terry are perfectly compatible, and they totally get each other, but Terry is still living with his toxic, suffocating parent and Mason doesn’t want to be a sugar daddy. Watching Terry struggle to find himself is a long lesson in patience, but Mason needs to trust that the end result will be worth it, because finally, he’s found a man worth sharing his heart with.
Mason wasn’t the most likable character in book one of this series so I wasn’t sure about him going in to this.  I have to say though that he completely won me over.  If you read Winter Ball, you’ll remember Mason as the guy who was pushy & said inappropriate things to Skip on his IT calls.  Once he realizes Skip & Ritchie are together he backs off and they become friends of a sort.  This book starts by showing us glimpses of Mason’s past and then fast forwards to his current life.  He’s a successful businessman but his personal life isn’t going like he’d like.  He’s a bit sad and lonely and he’s a nice guy who just wants to be loved.
Mason meets Terry through Skip and soccer and he’s immediately attracted.  The feeling is mutual but Terry is much younger and still living at home with his mother in a negative situation.  As the two men begin a tentative relationship, Mason realizes that no matter how much he cares, Terry still has to do some growing up to do.  Unfortunately love does not always go how you want it and both Mason and Terry have struggles as the story unfolds.  While parts of this were a bit painful to read, I felt the issues were treated very realistically.
The thing I really loved about this book (& the previous one in the series) is how well the author does every day people.  So many romance novels are filled with alphas and heroes or people with tragic backstories they are overcoming (& those have their place) but it is rare that you find a book with people just like you and me.  People with every day jobs and every day hobbies and every day concerns.  I loved that both Mason and Terry were flawed and had some problems but are really nice guys who care about each other and care about their friends.  I really liked them both, especially Mason, and I also really enjoyed the side characters.  Mason’s brother, Dane, and his story were particularly interesting to me and I’d love to see him have his own book at some point.  Skip and Ritchie from book one are in this quite a bit as well as some of the other team mates.
Overall I enjoyed this a lot.  It is both mildly angsty but sweet and romantic.  It has some humor and some smexy times.  And most importantly it had great character development and a lovely happily ever after.  While it is the second book in the series and there is a lot of overlap of the characters from book one, this could be read as a stand alone.  I ended up enjoying this more than the first book, Winter Ball, but that was good too and I would recommend reading it also.
Cover art by Anne Cain:  I love the cover.  I think it fits the story perfectly and it is a great compliment to the cover of the first book in the series.

A Release Special!Thursday Euclid on ‘Built For Pleasure (outtake excerpt)

Built for Pleasure by Thursday Euclid
D
reamspinner Press
Cover art by Aaron Anderson

Release Date: November 21, 2016

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to welcome Thursday Euclid here today to share a little bit about his latest novel, Built for Pleasure. Welcome, Thursday.

~

As I write this post, the book has just been released, and I’ve had the opportunity to see feedback from readers. One lamented never having the opportunity to see Wolf interact with other cyborgs, as it simply didn’t fit within the scope of the story. (Although that will be much of the sequel I’ve planned!)

I won’t spoil any plot points, but here’s a little outtake that shows what it’s like for Wolf when he interacts with others of his kind.

“Wolf’s Watercooler” – A Built for Pleasure Outtake

Sheridan dismissed Wolf, sending it away to be cleaned and maintained. It went automatically, its mind quiet, foggy with chemicals. A liveried servant guided it to the sonic shower and then scrubbed it down with cleansing lotion. Though Sheridan possessed other pleasure cyborgs, Wolf rarely saw them; it was his favorite now, and they were relegated to providing relief to his security force. It was uncommon enough that when another servant herded one in to be cleaned, the surprise startled Wolf from its haze.

It studied the smaller cyborg, noting its feminine build, its androgynous features. Far more beautiful than Wolf, it was delicate and fine-boned, without the visible implants that marked Wolf as a battle build as much as its size. Wolf tried to attract its attention without attracting the notice of its handler, desperate for interaction as an equal after its time with Torvik, who had spoken to it like a person.

Torvik, who had held it, and fed it real food, and let it sleep in his bed.

It missed Torvik as it had never missed anyone or anything.

Disappointing but unsurprising, the other cyborg ignored Wolf’s efforts at communication, forcing Wolf to suffer the indignities of maintenance without distraction. Having its genitals handled in a way at once impersonal and intimate left it craving escape. Rather than sink into solitary thoughts, Wolf struggled to think of a way to excuse conversation with the other cyborg.

Cyborgs rarely spoke to one another, being programmed to communicate only when invited to do so or when certain conditions made it necessary. Cyborg soldiers relayed orders or information—at least, Wolf seemed to remember that from its training, though it was uncertain after the memory wipes—but pleasure slaves had no need to talk to each other unless they were coordinating the service of a sapiens. This one would have nothing to say, no personality to display, and yet Wolf hungered for that interaction.

They were here, two meters apart, naked and vulnerable, being pried open and cleansed, but in the ways that mattered, they could not be farther apart.

The sapiens had a joke, one Wolf had overheard years ago, that seemed to underscore every interaction it had ever had with another of its kind.

“What do cyborgs talk about around the watercooler?“

“Whatever we tell them to.”

About Built for Pleasure

Retired military officer Malcolm Torvik runs a rehabilitation facility for malfunctioning pleasure cyborgs. When WLF-6759—Wolf—arrives at Reboot Camp, the former battle cyborg presents problems Malcolm’s never faced before. Most pleasure cyborgs are sensation junkies, constantly high on the chemicals sex releases into their bloodstream, but Wolf’s faulty refit means it’s spent a decade suffering through unwanted encounters—and sometimes fighting back despite the consequences.

At first Wolf’s rebellion frustrates Malcolm even as Wolf’s undeniable physical perfection draws him. Then Wolf’s unexpected vulnerability and need open a whole new dynamic between them, and Malcolm finds himself feeling far too much for something that isn’t even human. Or is it? Could Homo sapiens technica be just as human as Malcolm is? And if it is, what’s Malcolm supposed to do about it? Malcolm’s been alone for so long…. Is it possible he’s found love with a cyborg? How far will he go to ensure Wolf’s freedom? Malcolm knows what he must do—for both of them—but it might cost him much more than his comfortable life.

About the Author

The Thursday Euclid is a strange and elusive creature dwelling in the Texas Gulf Coast region. Frequently mistaken for Bigfoot, Chupacabra, or the monster of the week, he is, in fact, a 30-something black sheep with a penchant for K-pop, geekery, and hot and sour soup. When he’s not playing Dragon Age or SWTOR, he’s probably watching B-movies or talking to his best friend and frequent collaborator Clancy Nacht.

Checking It Twice (The Carlisles #3) by Meg Harding

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Meg Harding here today.  Welcome, Meg, and thanks for agreeing to answer our author questions and talk about your latest release, Checking It Twice.

checkingittwice_headerbanner

Thanks for interviewing me today, Melanie! Checking it Twice is the third in my Carlisles series, and we’ve finally reached the point where the twins are getting their HEAs. Dorian’s the first to fall, and he breaks a lot of his rules in the process.

  • Where do you normally draw your inspiration for a book from?  A memory, a myth, a place or journey, or something far more personal?
    1. My inspiration for Checking it Twice came from hockey, pure and simple. I love the game, and it’s inspired me to branch into sports romance. A lot of hockey players tend to date models, so I thought doing a twist on that would be interesting.
  • Are you a planner or a pantzer when writing a story? And why?
    1. Pantzer all the way. If I plan beforehand I feel like I spend too much time thinking, “Well, I said I was going to do that and if I want to do what I have planned next I have to make this bit work the way I planned…” It’s a vicious cycle.
  • Contemporary, supernatural, fantasy, or science fiction narratives or something else?  Does any genre draw you more than another when writing it or reading it and why does it do so?
    1. When it comes to reading, I’m a fantasy/supernatural girl all the way. Give me werewolves and other worlds, and I’m over the moon. I like the aspect of being put in the mindset of an alternate reality. As for writing, I’d really like to branch into supernatural and fantasy, but contemporary has been calling to me.
  • If you had a character you’ve written you would write differently now at this time in your writing career, who would it be and why?
    1. It’s not so much I’d write the character differently as I would add his perspective. I’d want to show Flynn’s side of things, from The Last Favor. I based him off Sherlock, but I think not giving him a voice of his own allowed that to kind of slip.
  • Can a author have favorites among their characters and do you have them?
    1. Definitely. Sometimes there’s just that one character that hits a little closer to home. I do have favorites among my characters. I don’t think I could pick an overall favorite however, but I’m awful at that kind of thing.
  • If you were to be stranded on a small demi-planet, island, or god forbid LaGuardia in a snow storm, what books would you take to read or authors on your comfort list?
    1. I’d take a Wrinkle in Time—it was a favorite of mine growing up and it remains one to this day. I’d also take Speaker for the Bees, not really a book but a fanfic that makes my heart do really weird things. If I got into the list of all the fanfic I would take, I’d be here all day, so I’ll end with this series which is the best thing to ever exist, all right.
  • How early in your life did you begin writing?
    1. I’ve got notebooks somewhere with half finished stories dating back to when I was like seven. If I have a say, they’ll never see the light of day. Def not my best works lol.
  • Were you an early reader or were you read to and what childhood books had an impact on you as a child that you remember to this day and why?
    1. I grew up taking turns reading with my mom. She’d read to me, and then I’d read to her, back and forth for hours. I was and still am obsessed with Nancy Drew (my dog is named Bess after a character). Inkspell blew my mind and made me cry so many tears. Eragon… broke my heart that one did.
  • If you were writing your life as a romance novel, what would the title be?
    1. Can this be anymore awkward? ~ I’d like people to say it in a Chandler Bing voice.

Blurb

Closeted professional hockey player Eric Belanger is falling hard for an out-and-proud male model. He’s unable to resist Dorian’s charm and pushing personal boundaries he never thought he’d cross. But Dorian is the kind of guy who deserves someone who isn’t afraid to be himself. Eric’s fears about what coming out will do to his career clash with the future he hopes to build with Dorian. He knows he’ll eventually have to make a choice.

Dorian Carlisle knows better than to date a man who wants to keep him a secret, but there’s something about Eric he can’t ignore. So he’ll take the risk, and it’ll be all right, because this isn’t a forever romance. He’s happy to live in the moment. But somehow, at some point, feelings sneak up on him and he’s not okay anymore. At a breaking point, Dorian must also make a decision. Their time together will either be the start of something wonderful or nothing more than a happy memory.

Excerpt

Somehow Dorian’s name got tossed into the ring for a winter clothing line spread in some sports magazine, and now he’s on a set in downtown New York City with five big, hulking hockey players. A few of whom are pretty damn hot, and the majority of whom aren’t American. He can admit he’s a sucker for an accent, and it’s a little distracting.

Jackson, his brother, flicks his nose. He stops staring at the tall European guy who’s talking to the tall French Canadian, who has his shirt off and an abdomen that Dorian would pay to be able to lick. He scrunches his face up at his brother, mimicking the judgey look being thrown his way. He can’t believe Jackson took this job. Isn’t it bad enough that he has to work with Denver—his twin—more often than not?

“What was that for?” he asks, gaze already trying to return to the guys. He can’t help it. He’s innately wired to appreciate beautiful things.

“I’m trying to do your makeup, and you’re making it difficult. Stop looking at the toys you can’t touch and look at me.” Jackson grabs his chin and tilts his head just so, wielding eyeliner in his other hand like it’s a weapon.

Dorian pouts, sticking his bottom lip way out. “You don’t know. I could touch them.” In my dreams.

Jackson gives him a stern look, which is ridiculous since he’s a year younger. Dorian should be the one giving the parental stare-downs. “Hands to yourself. Professional athletes are never a good idea. Now open your eyes wide and don’t blink.”

It takes a lot of self-control to not sneak glances at the hockey players while they get dressed and their makeup gets done. And well, he just doesn’t have that control. So he manages a peek or two. The whole process is a lot of clothes coming on and off, muscles flexing, watching stylists run their hands through gorgeous hair. It’s like being in a candy shop and getting told you can’t have anything. So not fair.

Dorian can list on the fingers of one hand the things he knows about sports, and all of it mostly has to do with what the balls look like and the overall purpose of them: score goals. It’s not that he’s not interested—well, okay, he is—but he just doesn’t have the attention span for it. He’s done jobs with plenty of athletes, both male and female, and their sports sound interesting enough when they talk to him about them. It just doesn’t translate to him watching it.

His lack of interest isn’t normally a problem, but athletes are a peculiar lot, and sometimes that makes working with them difficult. They have a hard time understanding the shoot isn’t about them. It’s about the photographer’s vision. The designer’s vision. It’s about serving a purpose. And then there are the times where it’s like they’re speaking a whole other language.

Like now.

An Ali Audiobook Review: Save of the Game (Scoring Chances #2) by Avon Gale and Scott R. Smith (Narrator)

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
save-of-the-game-audioAfter last season’s heartbreaking loss to his hockey team’s archrival, Jacksonville Sea Storm goalie Riley Hunter is ready to let go of the past and focus on a winning season. His new roommate, Ethan Kennedy, is a loud New Yorker with a passion for social justice that matches his role as the team’s enforcer. The quieter Riley is attracted to Ethan and has no idea what to do about it.

Ethan has no hesitations. As fearless as his position demands, he rushes into things without much thought for the consequences.Though they eventually warm to their passionate new bond, it doesn’t come without complications. While trying to financially help Ethan, Riley must hide his family’s wealth so as not to hurt Ethan’s immense pride. For their relationship to work, Ethan will need to learn when to keep the gloves on and let someone help him—and Riley will have to learn it’s okay to let someone past his defenses.
I loved this book just as much the second time around.  I read this book when it first came out and then jumped at this chance to review the audio version.  I’m glad to say it stood the test of time.  This remains my favorite in this series for a couple of reasons.  First off, there is very little angst in this book.  Neither of the two guys has ever been with another guy before but there is no drama surrounding this.  They discuss it like adults, determine they care about each other and want to see where it goes, and then they just get on with it.  No internal or external angsting.  I also enjoy the way the other characters in the book respond to them.  Their friends accept their status with few questions and one of my favorite scenes in the entire book is when Ethan takes Riley home to meet his mother and to come out to her.  It was a bit funny and a lot beautiful.  In a genre that is filled with stereotypical evil mothers, it was a refreshing change to see a wonderful, accepting mom who just loves her son.
There are some other issues both of the guys are working on but again, it’s done through communication.  Ethan’s storyline in particular was interesting too me.  Usually in sports books the MC’s are completely obsessed with their sport and this was different.  Ethan was able to say he really wasn’t as devoted as he needed to be and maybe he needed to look at some other options.
As usual with this author’s book you can tell through the writing that she is a hockey fan and her love of the game comes through in the writing.  If you’re not a hockey fan though you will not be bogged down with facts and details and you’ll be able to enjoy the book without any problems.
This audiobook is narrated by Scott R. Smith and I felt like he did a really good job.  He did both of the MC’s, including Ethan’s New Yorker accent, really well.  He also did a good job on the side characters, including the females (which not all male narrators can do).  Something about listening to these on audio makes the game scenes stand out more to me.  It’s almost like listening to games on the radio (well, actually on my phone app).  Listening to well done audios also make the romantic scenes seem even sweeter and the smexy scenes even hotter (& this book has both).
Overall this was a great read.  I loved the plot and loved the narration and I highly recommend checking this out.  This is the second book in a series but can be read as a standalone.
Cover by Aaron Anderson:  I love this cover.  It was one of my favorite covers of the year.  It’s a great representation of both the game of hockey as well as the story.  I also find it very visually appealing.

the-soldati-princeOne moment Riley Murrough is living a normal life working in a coffee shop, and the next he’s running for his life from demons, learns he bears the mark of a shape-shifter king from a magical realm, and—worst of all—he’s destined to become the mated prince to the arrogant tiger shifter he would rather strangle.

Khalon, the shifter king, is equally distraught at the idea of being bound to a human prince, and along with his Soldati warriors, he sets out to return Riley to his own world where he belongs. On their journey they might discover why the priestess brought them together—if they can escape the demons and make it to her alive.

The Soldati Prince is an interesting take on shifters and royalty. Even when the author is known for her shifters, the tigers in this story are completely different from the other characters she had written before. I like the idea of them shifting back into their clothes and being part of the royal family.

The story is short for the amount of world-built in it. From the very beginning, we get to know Riley, and through him, the new world in which the book takes place. There are a lot of action scenes with interesting antagonists and new ways of life. Just like Riley, the reader has to learn what to expect when dealing with the demons trying to take over.

I like the tension between Riley and Khalon and how they tried to stay away from each other. But the best part is when they become friends. They are a nice couple to read about and have an easy chemistry. Their sense of humor is great too. They worked well together and is lovely to see them interact with the villagers–especially the kids.

Seeing the new world from Riley’s human perspective is a fun part in the book. Their travel to see the priestess takes most of the story and it’s slow in parts. Some questions still unanswered but it’s to be expected since it’s the first book in the series. The author also did a nice job setting up the main characters in the next installment.

The cover by L.C. Chase shows Riley–wearing his leathers and holding his sword. He’s accompanied by two Soldati warrior tigers, and we can see small details about the realm in the background.

A Caryn Release Day Review: All the Way to Shore by CJane Elliot

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

all-the-way-to-shore-by-cj-elliotIn the acknowledgments of the book, the author mentions that she was writing for Dreamspinner’s Dreamspun Desires line.  So if you’re a fan, this book is exactly what you want to read.  It’s sweet, fairly low angst, with a very happy ending.  I hope it does end up as a Dreamspun Desires book!

Jonathan Vallen is the second son of a business tycoon.  His older brother was the one being groomed to take over the empire, so Jonathan had some freedom to follow his own desires:  music, gardening, and staying out of the limelight.  When his brother and his mother die, Jonathan feels obligated to take his brother’s place, to please his father even though his personality is not the forceful and cutthroat type   necessary in the corporate world.  He tries, he fails, he feels guilty, but still his father pushes and Jonathan keeps trying.  Until the day his father hires Marco Pellegrini as CEO of Vallen Industries, to save the company from what Jonathan feels is his own mismanagement, and to teach Jonathan how to do it right.  For Jonathan, this is the ideal opportunity to quit, and leave not only the company, but Boston as well.  He retreats to his mother’s house on Cape Cod, and starts building a new life.

One year later, Jonathan has made a lot of changes, and a lot of improvements.  He’s leading a physically healthy life with good diet and exercise, has lost 40 pounds, adopted a dog, got into therapy, and now he’s happy.  Even his wardrobe is different, and he looks and acts like an entirely new man.  His cousin Anthony talks him into a gay cruise to celebrate, and Jonathan is ready for a little shipboard romance to end his very long dry spell.

Less than 24 hours into the cruise, Tony and Jonathan run into Marco Pellegrini.  Rather than let this encounter turn Jonathan back into the insecure mess he used to be, Tony creates a new identity for him on the spot, and pushes him into a flirtation with Marco.  Jonathan decides to embrace his new confidence and becomes Jonah Rutledge, and though he’s uncomfortable with lying, he intends this thing with Marco to be just a fling, so keeps the fantasy going.

And that’s a summary of the first 20% of the book – I guess I’m a little wordier than the blurb!  We have the set up for the classic trope of mistaken identity, and it all follows the formula from there.  Marco and Jonathan end up falling in love, so when Jonathan’s true identity is revealed, the standard betrayal and break up occur.  Happily, this is where the book becomes less formulaic – instead of another manufactured circumstance throwing them back together, both men take this time apart to re-evaluate everything they felt on the cruise, and both realize that there is no reason they can’t make a true relationship a reality.  However, both men have some work to do on themselves, some changes they need to make in their own lives before they can come together for their happy ever after.  It took some time, but the outcome was so much more satisfying because of it, both for these two men, and for the reader!  I especially loved the thoughtful “anonymous” gifts that they sent each other, to make sure they kept in contact while they worked out their issues.  And in the end, everything is golden.

The book is written in third person omniscient throughout, but with an emphasis on Jonathan’s side of the story.  Marco’s inner world is revealed through his journal entries, where he not only speaks about his day, but details things he is grateful for.  It showed a kinder and more intimate side of him, and made me connect with him even more than I did with Jonathan.  The secondary characters, Jonathan’s cousin Anthony and Marco’s sister Sophia, and the perfect foils to keep the story moving and kept it from feeling artificial.  Only Jonathan’s father was a caricature – I would have preferred him to have a more three dimensional and sympathetic rendering rather than being the villain – but he plays a relatively minor part of the story so it doesn’t detract too much.  Overall, I really enjoyed the story, and probably will consider a reread when I’m looking for something light and fluffy.

Cover art by L. C. Chase is lovely, incorporates several elements from the story, and so I don’t even mind the headless (mostly) torso.

An Alisa Audiobook Review: THE NAKED PRINCE AND OTHER FAIRY TALES by Joe Cosentino and narrated by Joel Leslie

Rating:  2 stars out of 5

the-naked-prince-and-other-tales-from-fairylandCinder, a poor and beautiful young man who designs clothing, makeup, and hair for his stepmother and stepsisters, offers his clothing and slippers to a naked stranger in the woods, who turns out to be none other than Prince Charming. Follow Cinder and Prince Charming in this twist on the classic Cinderella tale as they discover their inner strengths and find their very own happily ever after.

Enjoy The Naked Prince and three other reimagined tales from Fairyland, each with a unique spin on stories we all know and love, including The Golden Rule, where eighteen-year-old Gideon Golden, after being thrown out of his home in Fairyland by his homophobic parents, breaks into the cottage of three burly men on Bear Mountain.

In Whatever Happened To…?, friction ensues between a celebrity with a growing appendage and a reporter who has a thing for giants.

And in Ice Cold, young Gaelen must save his love, Kieran, after a handsome but evil prince freezes Kieran’s heart and bewitches him into being the prince’s slave.

I was not as taken with this book as many others seem to be.  I have read a few re-imagined fairytales before, but this one didn’t connect with me, both in the telling of these stories and how the characters acted.  There was more of a raunchy side in these stories I didn’t like.

In the stories the characters (and secondary characters) seemed immature and had quite a bit of bickering going on.  The first story was alright, but the king and queens bickering and attitude along with Cinder’s family was just too much to actually enjoy it.  Unfortunately the character just seemed to get more and more annoying as the stories went on.  I didn’t like that it was continually insinuated that most men would always want someone else and there was a use of feminine descriptions that seemed quite disturbing to me.

Joel Leslie did a nice job keeping the characters separate with different voices.  However, his exaggerated use of accents made this book even more frustrating.  It took me and entire day to get through this 3 and a half hour book because I had to continually take break from it.

Cover art by Paul Richmond is absolutely adorable.

Synopsis

Jonathan Vallen has never felt good enough. A gentle musician who loves to garden, he’s woefully unsuited to running Vallen Industries, the family business. When his father hires a hotshot executive, Marco Pellegrini, to save the company, Jonathan moves away and leaves his humiliation behind. A year later and forty pounds lighter, Jonathan runs into Marco on an LGBT cruise. Marco doesn’t recognize him, the sparks fly, and Jonathan pretends to be someone else for the week—Jonah Rutledge—someone good enough to be loved.

Marco Pellegrini has always been driven. He rose from poverty to the pinnacle of business success, and he’ll do anything to protect his reputation—including hiding his bisexuality. Having saved Vallen Industries, he’s weary of the rat race and ready for a more meaningful life. When Marco meets his soul mate for that new life—Jonah Rutledge—on an LGBT cruise, he prepares to stop hiding and start living.

Back on land, the romance crashes when Marco discovers his perfect man is not only a lie but the son of his boss, Frederick Vallen. Jonathan resolves to win Marco back, but Frederick takes vengeful action. Jonathan and Marco must battle their own fears as well as Frederick’s challenge to get to the future that awaits them on the horizon.

Excerpt

Jonathan eyed the moon and waited for Marco, who was getting something from the bar to bring back with them to his stateroom. He smiled up at the stars, heart full, ready to ride the wave of this fairy tale all the way to shore. Then a hand caressed his neck, and he turned to smile at his handsome prince. Marco smiled back, his pendant glimmering on his chest and a bottle in his hand.

“What did you get?”

“Courvoisier.”

“Nice.”

“I thought it’d be nice for an after-dinner drink as we listen to Debussy.”

They strolled along the deck. “We are almost too fancy for words.”

Marco chuckled. “I’ve never been accused of being fancy before.”

Jonathan eyed him, tall and elegant with his black curls and Roman nose. “You seem fancy to me. Or, well, sophisticated is more like it.”

“If only Mama could hear you. She’d know her bambino had made it in the world.”

“You’re funny.”

Jonathan followed Marco into his stateroom, letting his Jonah Persona take the lead lest he pass out from sheer nervousness. “Nice digs.” Digs? Where’d that come from?

“Thanks.” Marco picked up a large envelope that had been shoved under the door, glanced at the front of it, and tossed it to join a pile of others on the desk. “Work faxes. They don’t seem to get I’m on vacation in the middle of the ocean. They can wait.”

A shiver took hold of Jonathan, thinking of Father and how totally like him it was to be bugging his CEO in the middle of his vacation.

“You aren’t cold, are you?” Marco asked.

“No, it’s fine. I’m fine. Everything’s good.” And I’m running off at the mouth. Cool it.

“Oh, okay. Good. Let me get the Debussy up on my iPod. They have a docking station with pretty decent speakers in here.” Marco sounded a little nervous himself.

As Marco fiddled with the iPod, Jonathan opened the Courvoisier and poured each of them a moderate amount, thinking they could both use some loosening up. “Do you want yours over ice?”

Marco turned. “No. That’s okay. There should still be some ice in the bucket if you like it that way. Here we go.” He pushed a button and Debussy’s La Mer started to play.

They sat in two armchairs at one end of the large room, listening to Debussy’s sensual and passionate music while sipping the brandy. The music swelled and crashed down in eerie imitation of the ocean all around them. With the curtains drawn back, they stared out at the real thing, moonlight dappling the midnight waves. Everything about this moment was surreal—a beautiful dream.

After a time, Marco set down his glass, his eyes burning into Jonathan’s. Jonathan gulped down the rest of his drink for courage and put his glass next to Marco’s. Marco held out his hand, and they rose from their chairs. As Jonathan followed Marco to the bed, his palms grew clammy and his heart raced so much he thought he might pass out. Now that his Jonah Persona had been successful in luring Marco to bed, performance anxiety crowded out everything else. God. It had been so long since he’d had sex. Did he even know what he was doing? Anthony’s voice chimed in on the proceedings. Relax, doll! It’s just like riding a bicycle. You never forget. Now, hop on that man and ride!
