An Ashlez Review: Match Grade – Criminal Delights: Assassins by G.B. Gordon

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Eirik Haldurson is a hitman. Kidnapped at age five and cruelly trained by his captor, he is today one of the most sought-after contract killers alive. Emotional distance from his targets, brutally beaten into him until it became second nature, is now the only way he can function. Lately though, that distance has started to elude him. And when a Colombian drug cartel contracts Eirik to take out ex-soldier-turned-vigilante, Matt Moreno, distance is suddenly as close as heat to fire. And all hell breaks loose.

This book is part of CRIMINAL DELIGHTS. Each novel can be read as a standalone and contains a dark M/M romance.

Warning: These books are for adult readers who enjoy stories where lines between right and wrong get blurry. High heat, twisted and tantalizing, these are not for the fainthearted.

I’m not going to lie, I’m a little let down by this book.  All in all it was a great book, very action packed and exciting, but it was not what I was expecting in a criminal delights, coming to read a lot of these and I have loved almost all of them except 2 now, perhaps I’m spoiled.
Cyrus was my favourite character in the book, and that says something.
Matt was nice enough, well meaning, and kind of sweet in a way.
Eirik (or Eric when Matt says it????) Is a bit of a loss, going through a rough patch.
I found their dynamic great in the beginning, I was excited, things got interesting very quickly, but then their dynamic changed, it went from 0-10000 in the blink of an eye and I was a bit thrown off and confused by it.  And the whole thing in the end felt so unbelievable, perhaps I’m more of a slow burn type of person, or at LEAST some dark and interesting moments.

Overall it was OK and I’d classify it more as a thriller romance than dark romance.  Still worth a read though if you like a lot of action and guns!

Cover – I love these assassins covers, the red/black/white combo really work

An Alisa Release Day Review: The Color of Summer by Anna Martin

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

Tattoo artist Max Marshall races into his hometown of Sweetwater, West Virginia—and is promptly pulled over for speeding. Max’s luck isn’t all bad, though, because he recognizes the deputy, Tyler Reed, Max’s childhood best friend’s older brother.

Reconnecting with Tyler helps Max settle back in, and it also leads to attraction. But when he tries to explore that connection at the grand opening of his tattoo studio—by kissing Tyler—awkwardness ensues. Max wants more, but has he misread Tyler’s signals?

As a single father raising a six-year-old daughter, Tyler doesn’t have much time to date. He’s ignored his attraction to men for years, but he can’t stop thinking about the kiss he shared with Max. If he can handle the complications of dating in a small town and the possible consequences to his career, this romance could blossom with all the colors of summer.

This was an enjoyable story, however, if you are looking at it to be a best friend’s brother story, it isn’t.  We only see Tyler’s brother for a short bit and one scene about their relationship.  I felt these two took the time to build a pretty good relationship though I got the feeling there were parts of the story that I was missing.

Max moves back to his hometown to be closer to his mother who recently had a stroke and though he had been there for a few weeks following said stroke everyone acted like he hadn’t been to town for years which I thought a bit strange.  Tyler has basically dedicated his life to his daughter but never really thought about finding another romantic relationship.

This story felt almost too smooth.  Yes there was the one night Max kissed Tyler and Tyler rebuffed him but there wasn’t even 24 hours of worry before that was fixed.  The only other conflict was when Max was going to move in with Tyler and his mom basically talked him out of it and made him doubt his feelings, which I still can’t believe happened, but the following weekend he is suddenly sure.  Those and some time jumps and inconsistencies were the main things that had me at 3 stars instead of 5.

I love the cover art by Reese Dante and the visual it gives of Max.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have M.D. Grimm here today on tour for the new release Wisdom’s Allegiance.  Welcome, M.D.!

Hello everyone! Thank you for joining me. And thanks to Scattered Thoughts for hosting me. M.D. Grimm here and very excited to talk about my new release “Wisdom’s Allegiance” (The Shifter Chronicles Book 13). This book can be read as a stand-alone, however, so if you’re intrigued and don’t want to start at the beginning, just check this one out.

I’ve been writing on and off for most of my life and my first published story was in 2011. Since then I have learned so much about the craft of writing. And the one thing that underwent the most evolution—besides my skill itself—is the reason behind my writing. At first, I wrote because I wanted to. I was curious about the structure of stories and the creation of a story, from character to plot to dialogue, etc. From grade school to high school there were several story writing assignments that I gravitated toward and had so much fun doing. That was my first inkling that I might be a writer. I greatly enjoyed the process and putting my imagination to good use. Also, by middle school, I was a voracious reader, thanks mostly to the Harry Potter books. Then I graduated to “The Lord of the Rings” and never looked back.

I have to say that those two series heavily influenced my writing, even to this day. The intricacies and depth of those universes encouraged me to create something similar. It was like they issued a challenge for me to try and one-up them, and I happily accepted, not really knowing what I was doing. LOL.

I didn’t start small or with baby steps—I just dove into the deep end and hoped I swam. I apparently like to bite off more than I can chew and then I have to struggle to keep afloat. Nowadays, however, I have more experience and books under my belt, so I can assess better what I can handle, how much I can handle, and when I can handle it. But I’m still learning. And I really believe that is key—you never stop learning. You shouldn’t. I know that if I stopped challenging myself and fell into a rut that I would grow bored and restless and wouldn’t want to write anymore. I have so many stories inside me and the biggest challenge is making a priority list and not getting distracted by new and shiny projects.

So, with around 20 stories published, my reason for writing has changed and grown. At first it was to satisfy a personal need, and though that is still important—I write for myself first and foremost—I want to say something with my stories. Themes are so important to stories, especially if you want to say something with finesse and subtlety instead of beating the reader over the head with it.

Yes, writing offers me an escape and a way to control things when life gets out of control, but my biggest pursuit is to make my readers smile. To give them hope or simply a warm feeling. To make them smile. I want people to enjoy my stories. That’s probably why I gravitated toward romance—readers expect a happy ending of some sort. It also gives me a thrill when characters triumph over tremendous odds since life so rarely offers such an outcome. Other genres don’t always give me that cleanly resolved ending. I definitely write escapist fiction/fantasy/romance and I won’t apologize for it. I firmly believe romance can say something important, if nothing else then you can be loved for who you are. Just have courage and put yourself out there.

So… why do I write? Lots of reasons. I enjoy it. I want to say something. I want to bring enjoyment to others. I love to create. The satisfaction of completing a project is like nothing else. It’s a natural high I will never get tired of feeling.

While right now I am focused on m/m romance I will be branching out and expanding on more diverse characters with different temperaments, identities, and persuasions. The options are limitless and the spectrum of human identity and all that entails is fascinating and beautiful.

I am currently working on several projects—an m/m fantasy trilogy, book 7 of my The Stones of Power series, and book 2 of my Saga of the Bold People.

Thanks for joining me and may dragons guard your dreams,

M.D. Grimm

Blurb:

Can a loyal and sensual owl shifter couple woo a human mate who’s convinced he’s an ugly duckling?

When socially awkward Dexter Fortis rescues an elf owl blown off course by a storm, he has no idea the bird is a shifter named Orion. Or that his life is about to change.

Orion falls in love with the kind custodian, but he must convince his long-term partner, Talon, that Dexter is just who they’ve been searching for to establish a permanent ménage. Even if they can gently break down Dexter’s walls, they’ll have to contend with a dangerous cult rising in the shifter community and a hidden enemy determined to keep Dexter from them.

About the Author

M.D. Grimm decided to become an author in the second grade (kind of young to make life decisions, but whatever) and nothing has changed since then (well, plenty of things, actually, but not that!). Thankfully, she has indulgent parents who let her dream, but also made sure she understood she’d need a steady job to pay the bills (they never let her forget it!). After graduating from the University of Oregon and majoring in English (let’s be honest: useless degree, what else was she going to do with it?), she started on her writing career and couldn’t be happier. Working by day and writing by night (or any spare time she can carve out), she enjoys embarking on romantic quests and daring adventures (living vicariously, you could say) and creating characters that always triumph against the villain (or else what’s the point?), finding their soul mate in the process.

An Ashlez Review : It’s In My Blood (Criminal Delights:Obsession) by Sean Azinsalt

Rating – 2.5 stars out of 5
Death eventually comes for us all. But what if there’s a way for older people to regain their youth? To stay a step ahead of the grim reaper?

Turning 40 was the last straw for me. It’s practically 60 in gay years and I wasn’t ready for dentures yet, so I came to Youthology — a program that injects clients with blood transfusions from young, fit and healthy donors.

I chose Nick.

Handsome. Masculine. And more importantly, young.

I thought I hit the lottery, until my life started to change for the worst. Not even the top medical experts can explain what happened to me. From the moment Nick’s blood flooded into my veins, I stopped being me, and I became something new; something dangerous and deadly.

I became my donor.

His obsessions are mine now. His darkest desires, his dreams, his needs, and nightmares are all a part of me, and I don’t want to let them go.

I embrace them and the beautiful boy who haunts both of our dreams.

My blood pact was sealed the moment I entered Youthology.

I never thought I’d become a killer.

Honestly when I first started this book I thought YES another criminal delights book!!!!!!!!!! I started reading and was sorely disappointed – Concept, of course, cool, the MC was lackluster and really annoying with his hangups, I really didn’t need him complaining for 1/4 of the book – and I did not enjoy the initial fun time scene in the book.

I’m very conflicted – I adore the criminal delights but this book was just a dud through and through .. again, was an interesting concept the whole eternal youth and blood angle was pretty cool to read and the transition of the main character from who he was to who he became was quite the read, but in the end it was just not the book for me.

Perhaps I’m projecting my love for a few of the others in the criminal delights “series” into this one and that’s why I found it lackluster, still worth a read if you like cool science things and some freaky happenings.

Cover art by Natasha Snow: cover seems dark/spooky, related to blood so that’s cool.

A VVivacious Review:It’s in My Blood – Criminal Delights: Obsession by Sean Azinsaltt

Rating: 2.75 Stars out of 5

Mark is a journalist obsessed with growing old or more accurately obsessed with not growing old. As he turns forty, he can’t help feeling like his life is over, when he gets the chance to investigate a company that claims to reverse ageing. As Mark starts his treatments at Youthology not only does it seem to work but it does so much more, as the blood in Mark’s system works to make Mark more like his donor, Nick. But there is a darkness in Nick and now it’s in Mark too.

This book is Mark’s story and I liked Mark. Even with how shallow he is you can tell that he is a good person. He is definitely vain but I really couldn’t fault him for his views. Mark was a fascinating character and I really would have liked to see more of his views on what was happening to him.

This book is primarily Mark’s story and we see all characters from Mark’s lens. Sean is an interesting character who manages to get two men completely obsessed with him though I wonder if he has more of a dark side than we got to witness though I like him as the innocent character in this one. Nick is too much testosterone. He is the alpha male who thinks with the wrong head. He is cocky to his very detriment. He is an idiot and I guess I just have to come out and say this, Mark was always going to win this battle.

The story starts off interesting and it is quite engrossing in the beginning. The sex is hot but somewhat about the halfway point this book devolves into nothing but sex. There are like chapters filed with it. Chapters twenty-four and twenty-five are basically one never-ending sex scene. This author wrote the sex scenes well but there truly is something as too much of a good thing. I really wanted some plot point to emerge amid all that sex but it was for nought. The ultimate conclusion of the story is predictable as we get a hint to it in the prologue so I thought the journey to that point would be interesting. I truly wished that the last act would have been a homage to Mark truly becoming Nick and I would have liked it if it had played out that way but for the most, the author failed to develop the plot much after Sean enters the picture. There is nothing new the story introduces after that point and everything interesting happens before that point.

The writing of this book is a little quirky with some awkward sentence structuring but I think it overall works to build the charm of the book, though at times it did bring me out of the book.

This book is marketed as a dark book and I feel like the author should have stuck to the blood and its side effects to add darkness to the story instead she halfway decides that the darkness in this book is going to come from all that sexual depravity which didn’t work for me. Side Note – There is actually a lot of kinky stuff happening in this book and some stuff might be off-putting to people so just a heads up there are some golden showers in this one. I have read almost every sexual taboo out there so it’s hard to get me that way. Therefore, I must acknowledge that this book might be subjective with some people agreeing that it is a truly dark read but it wasn’t for me.

The last scene should have been the darkest of all but it just doesn’t play that way and that epilogue was downright cheery. It was the darkness that this book promised that had me intrigued but it failed to deliver.

Cover Art by Natasha Snow. I really liked the cover it really fits the theme of darkness and intrigue this book was going for.

Protection has its price, but so do fantasies…

Fantasy Week happens twice a year at Crave, and it’s always a big hit—a way to live out your wildest fantasy in a safe, sane, and consensual manner.

But when Cade comes in with his Fantasy Week invitation, he’s not happy about it. He’s stoic as hell and his preferences don’t seem to match his fantasy at all…and yet, despite that, he enjoys himself with Tegan and Vic. At least at first.

When it becomes glaringly apparent that the fantasy isn’t something Cade’s comfortable with, it’s confusing for the men he’s been paired with, and Tegan and Vic put a stop to the scene immediately.

What Cade doesn’t know is that Tegan and Vic are not only co-owners of Crave, but they’re also owners of a mercenary group, Gray Ops, that’s run out of Crave. They’ve also been circling each other for years… but nothing sparks until their session with Cade.

What happened in Room 4 is something none of the men can forget…but it’s got nothing to do with a fantasy and everything to do with blackmail. Can Tegan and Vic help Cade keep his secrets, while keeping all of them safe at the same time? Because the threatening to spill out aren’t only Cade’s…

Keeping Cade Teaser 2

Excerpt

Just when you thought you’d gotten away from this shit, you’re back in.

Oz stopped in front of the door marked Room 4 and handed Cade his card. “Give this to the first man you see inside the room—that’s when your fantasy starts, so now’s the time for any last-minute questions or concerns.”

“I just need to do this.” His heart thudded in his chest. He took a long gulp of water, and Oz put a hand on his arm.

“Hey, it’s normal to be nervous, but this is supposed to be fun. Freeing. Nothing happens that you don’t want. Remember, red and yellow, okay?”

Right—fun and freeing. Cade wanted to tell him that this was an obligation for someone he loved, because of someone he hated who, for all he knew, might show up behind this door…but instead, he simply nodded, handed off his glass…and walked inside.

The door closed behind him as he waited for his eyes to adjust to the low lighting in the room. Later, he’d notice the bed in the corner, the bench, and various BDSM tools, but his immediate focus couldn’t help but narrow, with a laserlike intensity, on a man who took up all the space in the room.

That force of nature stood casually, leaning against the wall, his gaze bent on exposing and seducing and Jesus, he was goddamned beautiful in that hot, badass kind of way with short, spiked, almost white-blond hair that made him look fierce. He was taller than Cade and broader, but his body was honed from whatever work he did for a living and not simply gym muscles. Cade could definitely tell the difference. This man was capable.

This man would break him. And he’d have fun doing it.

Cade shifted, not sure what to do next. Finally, he held out the card and said, “Hey, I’m Cade.” Like maybe the guy didn’t know who he was, or why he was here.

The man’s dark-blue eyes caught him, held him in place. “Hey, I’m the one who’s going to make you scream.”

His voice was a deep drawl that ran like warm honey down Cade’s spine. He fought a shudder and lost, and the man graced him with a wicked smile.

Man up. Get it over with. Cade straightened his spine and waited for the order.

It came far too quickly.

“Strip. Now. There’s no reason to keep your clothes on for what you’re here to do.”

It’s 9172, YE (Year of the Empire), and the future has forgotten its past.

MEME 2 A Fall in Autumn

The sun was over the trees at the southeastern edge of the sloped opening in the forest when I awoke. The sun woke me, actually: its rays on my face, the flicker of shadow and light as it played across my closed eyes. I was half dressed: my shoes off, my feet bare, and my coat spread over me in lieu of a blanket. My shirt was somewhere, probably. I wasn’t wearing it, anyway, and my eyes hadn’t opened yet, but I could feel it nearby the way you can sense an old dog by your chair or a former lover on the opposite side of an otherwise perfectly nice party.

My back curled against something firm and supporting and I felt gentle fingers stroke the tufts of silvery black at my temples. Hematite, a man told me once. I would always love him a little for saying that. My hair there wasn’t yet gray but no longer black and when wet it looked like hematite, and he said it like that meant something deep and significant and mystical I didn’t understand. Having someone’s fingers run through it felt good, though. It felt like a happy memory, like something I didn’t expect would happen much anymore if it ever really happened in the first place.

That simple touch was a comfort to me. It’s the most minor thing and, for that reason, the most missed when it’s gone. I don’t go long stretches without being touched, but it had been a while between caresses. This was that: a caress, and more; not exactly sexual but not exactly platonic. It was that happy in-between we call intimate. I made myself vulnerable to other men, and they themselves to me, more times than I can count in my too-short life. It didn’t always work out, though, that my usual flavor of street trade would show basic human kindness in return for mine.

None of that mattered, though. Those guys were long gone. Right that second, someone ran his fingers through my half-asleep hair, intimate and kind and caressing. I felt vulnerable and that was okay. For a few moments I wasn’t dying and I wasn’t scared. I wasn’t lonely and I wasn’t alone. The sun felt good, and the breeze through the branches sounded like Gaia herself telling me to go back to sleep. I thought for a moment I might be okay with dying fairly soon if I got to wake up like this every morning for the rest of my life.

“Okay,” I groaned. I didn’t move and I didn’t open my eyes because I wasn’t quite ready for the moment to go away even as I lifted the pin to pop its balloon. “You want something. So tell me what it is. Because if I say yes – if– I may not have much time to hold up my end of the bargain.” My voice dispelled all the magic of the moment, but his fingers were still at my temple, resting there, ready to go back to what we shared moments before. I rolled over and looked up at Alejandro, his purple hair down over half his face as he leaned on one elbow. I didn’t kiss him, but I did put one hand to his jaw and brush his cheek with my thumb. I wondered if he could feel that – really feel it, like skin feels it. “Let’s not pussyfoot around this. You want me to do something. The whole story about the angel and thinking someone was trying to kill you was bullshit, but there was something there, something worth chasing, so let’s have the truth now and get on with things.” I tried to smile at him. His expression was completely blank.

With the hand he used to brush my temples, he laid a fingertip behind my ear, cupping my face with barely a single point of contact. He still didn’t smile, but his eyes searched my face, my own eyes, for something. It occurred to me the correct phrasing might be to say he searched my eyes for someone. I assumed he’d been alive long enough to know a hell of a lot of people, and I would bet a nickel he looked for one of them in me. There are a hundred romantic stories about golems: meat sacks like me throwing ourselves at a golem out of infatuation with their embodiment of agelessness.

If he’d been there before, heard a hundred thousand of us wail about mortality and still willing to hear number one hundred thousand one, he must have a lot of love for humankind. No, I thought, more than that: he must have loved the hell out of oneof us at some point. Maybe he was waiting for that guy to walk back into his life, reemerging from the vast but finite pool of genetic factors we possess as a species. I wondered if I simply seemed close enough to that long-lost lover to pass muster for a night.

I also wondered what made a golem want to get laid in the first place: ever the detective, after all.

“I really did see an angel in Splendor,” Alejandro said. He still wasn’t smiling. If anything, he had the muted seriousness, the understated gravitas, I’d long since come to recognize as the posture of someone telling the truth at long last. I wondered how long it had been. “I swear it to you. I swear it.” He surprised me, then, because he didn’t cry, golems don’t have tear ducts, but his eyelids quivered with the autonomic response to strong emotion. He still hadn’t moved at all, and we were shielded from the breeze so that his hair hung straight down like a perfectly still and settled curtain across half the stage of his face. “And I believe it would try to kill me if it knew I were here.”
