A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audiobook Review: Consorting with Dragons by Sera Trevor and Philip Alces (Narrator)

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

When I started this audiobook I never expected to take such a wonderful, heartwarming journey through a realm of magic and dragons, kings and nobles, love and jealousy, all told to me by a Brit with an amazing ability to take me to a magical kingdom where dragons are the ultimate authority and a young man falls in love with a prince.

Lord Jasen of Grumhul, an impoverished young nobleman with a gambling rascal of a father, travels to the Draelands to secure a rich husband to settle his father’s debts. Once a year, all the young eligibles of the kingdom—male and female—come to the Draelands to spend a few weeks being groomed for the wealthy lords and ladies who will show up to make their marriage offer.

Jasen is there because his father won a place for him, but he doesn’t expect to make a match at all. His province is poor, and it’s the only one in the kingdom that isn’t dragon-blessed. Dragons are not allowed in Grumhul so when Jasen meets one and later dreams of one, he’s completely charmed.

Without realizing who he’s speaking to one day, Jasen befriends a handsome young man as he’s out scouting the countryside. It turns out he’s met King Rilvor, and more importantly, the king has met him. Over time it becomes clear they each care for the other, but there’s evil and negativity among Jasen’s peers and no one wants to see the king choose him, so he’s sabotaged and undermined.

This was such a delightful story, I find it hard to describe. It made me feel good. In fact, there was excitement and adventure and I shook my head at some of Jasen’s more unworldly moves and his poor decisions, but it wasn’t a dark tale. I looked forward to each new page, each new chapter, each new adventure, and oh, how I couldn’t wait to see this lovely fairy tale end with the king choosing the young nobleman over all others. And the dragons? Simply a bonus. Bright and colorful, intelligent and making the smart choice, it was evident that Jasen was the dragon’s choice for their king as well.

As I stated earlier, the narration was outstanding, so if you are looking for a nice way to spend some time in a peaceful happy place, this is a great choice. I highly—no, very highly—recommend this to all who enjoy fantasy, magic, and the world of dragons.

Cover by Natasha Snow shows Lord Jason dressed in court finery against a background of the castle with a dragon flying above. It perfectly depicts the heart of the story.

A Lucy Review: Curl Around My Heart by Londra Laine

Rating: 3.5 Stars out of 5

Tate Robinson is the owner of a salon who is unapologetic about who he is and what he likes.  Mostly, anyway.  He’s a successful business owner who has won competitions for his hair design but feels less than when he visits his family.  But he’s an awesome boss and a kind person.  So when a man walks into the salon at closing time with a young girl in a football uniform desperately needing help with her helmet head braids because tomorrow is picture day he is really unable to turn them down.  That’s how he meets Reece and his daughter, LJ.  When he finally, finally gets home after an incredibly long busy day at work all he wants to do is lay on the couch and veg.  Unfortunately, a new neighbor upstairs is causing a ruckus moving furniture and Tate can’t stand it.  He runs upstairs, pounds on the door only to find…LJ.  His new neighbors are Reece and LJ. Uh oh.

What ends up happening is Reece needs help with the hair department and is willing to trade cooking for Tate.  It’s a win-win situation. He works a lot and he cares for his clients – he is also very honest with them when they ask.  “He held a strict policy that he never commented on his clients’ lives, never passed judgement to their faces anyway, or gave them unsolicited advice.  Now, solicited advice he had no problem doling out in spades.”  And it’s good advice.  Sometimes I wanted someone to give him some advice about his family, especially when the closeness of Reece and LJ get him sad.  “That closeness jogged long ago memories from when he was a kid, before his own father stopped talking to him…”

Reece can understand family issues because even though his mama talks to him and helps with LJ, she is a nonstop criticizer who is just waiting for Reece to fail.  “But he wondered why his mama had not gotten that gene that other parents had – the one where they believed in their kids, even when their kids didn’t believe in themselves.”  What her actions do is lead him to believe that he isn’t good enough, as a man, as a parent, as a son.  He and LJ have gone through a lot, particularly because of LJ’s mom, Jenna, and he’s handled it so well but he can only see the negative.  He’s bisexual, a fact that Jenna threw in her parent’s faces as an act of rebellion and now they make comments to LJ about it.

Doing LJ’s hair and sharing meals ends up leading to them being friends and then more.  But it isn’t easy for either of them.  Tate is waiting for Reece to leave him and Reece is sure he will mess it all up. Reece is so supportive of Tate while he deals with family , getting bothered because Tate gives up the heels, the makeup, the colorful clothes for dull when he visits his family. Reece lets his daughter be who she is – football and princesses?  Of course!  He thinks Tate should have that too.

So the story is focused on Tate and Reece (and LJ) for the majority until Jenna throws them a curveball, one that Reece doesn’t handle in the best way. I felt so awful for Tate and for Reece, even though I felt he was to blame for it.  It gives him the courage to finally stand up to his mother but at what price?   Everything isn’t totally on Reece, it’s a two way street, but it was heartbreaking.

This is where the story lost some for me, because we started getting a couple of time hops that were aggravating.  “He just hoped Tate would be open to hearing him when Reece was ready to talk.”  The next chapter is “A month later”.  I thought WHAT?  At least Tate had an ally in his brother’s new girlfriend, Keilani, and it is her that makes Tate able to stand up to his father.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and I was pulling for everything to work out with these guys.  The writing was fine – no over the top dialogue or awkwardness I had to figure out.  Okay, I have to admit there were phrases here that made me cringe.  I’m sure it’s just a personal preference but I can’t stand to read things like “…fully exposed, grasping empty hole” or “…red, wet grasping orifice…”  Just ugh. But those were few.  I felt the connection between Tate and Reece and that was important.

The cover art by Resplendent Media is a grayscale photo of two men, Reece and Tate.  It’s a little sedate, although very fitting for the book, so I wish there had been a glimpse of Tate’s sparkle and shine because that’s what made him Tate.

I do have to take a second to address the dedication of this book.  Dedicated to the uncle of the author, it was so bittersweet that it made me want to cry.  We don’t know the story of the uncle but the sadness comes through.

Kevin and Hugo make plans to blend their lives, but bleak news changes everything. Building a future together is still a priority, but only if their relationship can survive.

Love strengthened by adversity.

Everyone in Kevin’s life knows him as straight rather than bisexual. There was no need to come out until now, but loving Hugo is worth any prejudice he’ll encounter. Hugo does his best to be patient while Kevin navigates his way toward openness, but he refuses to be put back in a closet for long.

Kevin wants to tell his kids without screwing up their newfound stability, and he worries about telling his ex because Erin might use the truth against him to renegotiate custody. Kevin wants it all finalized, but time isn’t on his side.

When Erin gets grim news, it shakes everyone to the core and rips Kevin away from the life he planned with Hugo. The news brings Hugo’s past hurts bubbling to the surface. Yet when Erin turns to Hugo for support, their new connection shows him how essential he is to Kevin and his kids.

Despite the chaos, it’s clear Hugo is very much a part of this unconventional family.

Eventually they eased away from each other, their lips pressing briefly against a cheek, an eyelid, the corner of a mouth, until their foreheads were touching as they shared slightly labored breaths.

“I like you, Tate.” The words spilled from Reece as though Tate had wrung them from him. Tate pulled back, forcing Reece to disentangle their legs. Tate was in profile to Reece now, his head dropped against the back of the couch. His stomach seized and his confidence drained, waiting to hear Tate’s response.

“I like you too, Reece,” the other man mumbled.

Oh, thank fuck.

Reece sighed in relief as Tate shifted to meet his gaze.

“I’m crazy attracted to you. Obviously. But, I’m just nervous because guys like you⎯”

Reece’s hackles rose. “Guys like me?”

Tate closed his eyes briefly then opened them. “Yeah. Guys like you. Stereotypically male. Not so obviously queer. Well, they’ve been attracted to me, dated me. But inevitably break things off, because they think I’m too femme. Too flamboyant.” Tate’s shine flickered, and a well of heat raced up Reece’s chest.

“Well, fuck those dudes,” Reece said, throwing himself back on the couch. “And don’t ever compare me to them. I see you, Tate.” He turned his head and waited until Tate met his gaze. “I like what I see. All of it. All of you. You look good to me in heels, kicks, tight-ass ladies’ jeans, and sweats too. I just like you, man.” He ended his little tirade on a shaky breath and then leaned over to brush his lips against Tate’s.

As he went to pull back, Tate trapped Reece against him, gliding his tongue across the seam of Reece’s lips, coaxing Reece to open then luring him into an urgent kiss. Their lips and noses smashed, teeth bit and clacked as they clutched at each other before Tate pulled back abruptly.

“What am I doing?” Tate whispered, resting his head against Reece’s. “You have a kid. You’re my client. My neighbor.” He pulled back, his face serious, eyes searching Reece’s. “And I like to top. Mostly. Like seventy-thirty.” Tate lifted his chin as though waiting for Reece to object.

Reece just smiled, his dick twitching at the thought of Tate topping him, bending him over the couch and making him wail. He brushed his lips against Tate’s. “Well, lucky for both of us then that I like to bottom, mostly. I’d say about sixty-forty. I figure we can meet somewhere in the middle. As far as the other stuff goes… What? You discriminating against me?”

Tate shook his head. “No, it’s just that I’ve been here before, okay. With the straight guys, the bi guys, even the gay ones, and most of them just wanted to fuck and didn’t even want to take me out on a date because I was too effeminate for them.” Tate waved his hand. “Too whatever, too…me, and I just…” He trailed off.

“You expect me to be like them,” Reece finished.

Tate groaned then covered his face briefly. “No, okay? Maybe. Ugh. It’s hard not to expect this to be the same, you know?” Tate grimaced.

Disappointment surged through Reece but then quickly dissipated. Tate didn’tthink Reece would personally fuckup whatever this was that was starting between them. No, this had nothing to do with Reece. Tate had been burned, and Reece could relate. He couldn’t make any promises about the outcome of their budding whatever it was, but he damn sure wanted to try. He didn’t want to be to Tate what all the other men who’d come before had been.

Reece grabbed Tate’s hand, turning to face the man. “Well, how about we do the unexpected? Can I take you out next Friday after work?” Reece held his breath.

Synopsis

When René moves into his new home, he didn’t expect it to come with roommates. Two handsome roommates, to be precise. Too bad they’re ghosts.

The fact that they’re dead doesn’t stop them from running their fingers through René’s hair or tackling him onto the bed. It’s not long before things escalate and René finds himself with two ghost lovers that treat him better than any living partner ever has.

However, they can’t eat, can’t go far from the house where they died, and their fingers feel like icicles against René’s skin. The longer René is with them, the more he can sense them, but nothing can reduce the chill of their bodies against his. Still, it might be worth the hypothermia.

Chapter One
René stood in front of the doorway and ran his finger over the outline of the key’s metallic surface before wedging it into the lock and stepping inside his new house. The cold air puckered the skin of his arms and neck. He rubbed his shoulders to keep them warm as he looked around. The flooring throughout the house was black-and-white linoleum. A wide living area faced him—to his left was a fireplace, straight ahead stood double glass doors leading to a small garden, and to his right a half bathroom, dining area, and kitchen. Between the dining room and the glass door, a staircase with a thick cherrywood banister curved up to the three bedrooms and a full bathroom.

René walked to the staircase and stopped short of the first step. He examined the black-and-white squares. They looked clean at first glance, but since he was searching, René noticed the thin rust-colored lines between the tiles. It was why he had bought the house. He’d heard the two previous owners had died after falling down the stairs. Afterward, the old building fell victim to exaggerated ghost stories. True, it did make the building more affordable, but the real reason it appealed to René was because he loved ghost stories and all things macabre. Ever since he was a child, tales that made others grimace had made René smile. He squatted to the floor and reached out to graze his fingertips against the tiles.

A long sigh escaped from between René’s lips. He stood and headed to his moving truck. After several hours of carrying boxes in, he decided to save the larger furniture for the next day. René lit a fire; orange light crawled across the floor and walls. He unrolled his sleeping bag near the hearth and slipped inside. The old house creaked. The silence in the house amplified every other noise, which echoed like a lullaby and soothed René into a hard sleep.

At dawn, before René was fully awake, he dreamed someone dragged their fingers through his hair. He rolled on his side, muttering, “It’s too cold to get up.” The next time he opened his eyes, sunlight brightened the room through the garden doors. He sat up, rubbed his face, and remembered the odd dream of being petted. He smiled at the dream as he stretched and moaned. René slipped out of the sleeping bag and shuffled toward the kitchen to make coffee.

The day labored on as René set upon the tedious mission of dragging his furniture inside his house by himself. Most items—the bed, the office desk, his baker’s rack—he had dissembled before loading into the rental truck, but a few pieces—the washer, dryer, and sofa—he had to strap to a dolly with bungee cords, making it slow to get them inside the house. There was nothing better to do during the constant back and forth than think. He’d spent most of his thirty-four years of existence rushing past his own life. He’d sped through junior high and high school as fast as he could, desperate to get away from the small-minded town where his aunt and uncle had raised him after his parents died of heat exhaustion during a camping trip. After he graduated, René fled to the nearest city, waiting tables to scrape up enough cash for a small apartment while he earned his associate degree. He jumped into a relationship with the first guy who openly pursued him, infatuated by the bold, flirtatious attitude that René never experienced from any of the guys back home. Even after his heart broke, René hurried straight to the next boyfriend, who ended up being much worse than the first.

He learned his lesson after that one, sticking to casual hookups as he focused on work and his studies. Once he finished school, René was desperate to find a job where he could afford more than ramen noodles and dollar-store socks. Now he was at a point in his life where he wanted nothing more than to appreciate everything he obtained and accomplished over the years. He escaped the small town. He made enough money to pay his bills. He finally bought a house. René wanted a chance to breathe and enjoy it. Perhaps find a decent partner who wanted to settle down, or at least get a dog.

He went through an entire box of granola bars and a pot of coffee before he decided to go to the store for groceries.

When he returned, René made a sandwich for lunch and then continued to set everything in order. By the end of the day, each stack of boxes sat in the correct room and the furniture was more or less placed where he intended to keep it. Too exhausted to assemble the bed, René spent another night in his sleeping bag near the fireplace, feeling like a strange post-modern male Cinderella.

In the early gray dawn, he had the same dream. Fingers, barely felt, ran through his hair and gingerly touched his cheeks and collarbone. René exhaled with content at the soft, misty caresses, and he wished ghosts were real before sinking into a deeper sleep.

In the morning, he started unpacking in the kitchen until he found the toaster and a skillet. After eating breakfast and unpacking the kitchen, he assembled the bed. Two nights on the floor had his shoulders stiff. René cursed as he balanced the sideboard of his bed frame in his lap and worked the first screw in one turn at a time. For the cost of a six-pack of beer and some pizza, May would have been more than happy to help René both move his furniture and set up the bed, but René relied on his best friend too much already. The next time May visited, René wanted to go out and have fun, not unpack a mountain of boxes, so he finished tightening the first screw and wondered where his bag of extras had disappeared. René groaned when he saw them on the other side of the room. He would have sworn he’d set them beside his lap when he started, but apparently he hadn’t. By the time he pushed the box spring and mattress onto the completed frame, René was worn out. He dropped onto the bed and made snow angel motions with his arms and legs before resting.

“Forget unpacking. I should just go to sleep,” René spoke to the bed, having no one else to talk to.

His muscles ached from carrying boxes and furniture, and the bed was firm but soft enough for him to sink a little. René shut his eyes and pulled a deep, intentional breath into his lungs. Daydreams played out behind his closed eyelids. It’d been awhile since anyone else had been in his bed with him, and he imagined a mystery lover sneaking to his bedside, sitting beside him, and kissing his stomach as he unzipped René’s pants. His fantasy spun out of control. The mattress felt like it really did shift with the weight of another person sitting close. René sat up and shook his head to rid himself of the ridiculous daydream. He made the bed before going downstairs to finish unpacking the living room.

By the third night, the house resembled a home. René examined his progress in the living room and nodded his head in satisfaction. As he stood in place, René’s hair slid against his shoulders, as if someone had brushed the long strands away from his face. He froze a moment, wondering if his imagination played tricks with his mind again, but the distinct pressure of a hand lighted on his shoulder and fingers ran down his cheek. He blinked, trying to process the strange sensation of being touched by invisible hands.

“Hello.” René’s voice sounded loud in the visibly empty living room.

The touching stopped after he spoke.

“Wait, don’t leave,” René said, afraid he’d somehow startled whatever had interacted with him. René’s gaze darted across the living room, searching for any indication that he wasn’t alone. Nothing was out of place. René sighed, his shoulders slumping forward. “I didn’t imagine that,” he whispered, to convince himself he hadn’t daydreamed the experience.

An idea drifted into René’s head. He spoke to the air in a bashful tone. “If you can hear me, would you follow me. Please?”

He walked up the stairs and opened the door to his office. Stacks of boxes lined the walls and surrounded the desk like strange cardboard obelisks. René pilfered through the boxes until he found one labeled office odds and ends.

He pulled the tape from the top of the box and set aside small statues of gargoyles, skeletons, and imps. With both hands, René removed the old Ouija board from the cardboard box. He’d never used it before and only owned it for the aesthetic, but now he sat on the tiled floor with the board in his lap and the heart-shaped planchette under his fingertips.

“I know this is dumb,” he said. “I know this is a stupid toy, but why not use it? Crap, I hope I’m not talking to myself. I just want to—” A breath hitched in René’s throat as the planchette scrawled across the wooden surface of the board.

“Oh good! I was hoping you’d want to talk. Hold on. Let me get a pen.” René rummaged through another box until he found a pack of pens and a notebook. He held the paper in his lap so he could write down the letters. “What’s your name?” René asked, but to his disappointment, the planchette only swerved in between the yes and no options at the top of the board. He frowned, thinking of what he might be doing wrong. Another question came to mind. “How many of you are here?”

The pointer swerved to the number two on the board.

“What are your names?” The planchette moved without him touching it, freeing up his hands to write each letter.

Marcus.

Bastion.

“Really?” René raised an eyebrow. It was a rhetorical question, but the heart planchette spelled another sentence.

“You have a problem with our names?”

“No.” René smiled. “My name’s Rembrandt. Our mothers should be slapped. Call me René, though.” A nervous chuckle slipped past René’s lips. “Not that I can hear you say my name.”

A Free Dreamer Review: Ardulum: First Don (Ardulum) by J.S. Fields

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

Ardulum. The planet that vanishes. The planet that sleeps.

Neek makes a living piloting the dilapidated tramp transport, Mercy’s Pledge, and smuggling questionable goods across systems blessed with peace and prosperity. She gets by—but only just. In her dreams, she is still haunted by thoughts of Ardulum, the traveling planet that, long ago, visited her homeworld. The Ardulans brought with them agriculture, art, interstellar technology…and then disappeared without a trace, leaving Neek’s people to worship them as gods.

Neek does not believe—and has paid dearly for it with an exile from her home for her heretical views.

Yet, when the crew stumbles into an armed confrontation between the sheriffs of the Charted Systems and an unknown species, fate deals Neek an unexpected hand in the form of a slave girl—a child whose ability to telepathically manipulate cellulose is reminiscent of that of an Ardulan god. Forced to reconcile her beliefs, Neek chooses to protect her, but is the child the key to her salvation, or will she lead them all to their deaths?

“Ardulum: First Don” is a very hard book for me to rate. I guess I just had the wrong kind of expectations. It just wasn’t for me.

I really liked Neek and her crew. They’re quite an interesting band of people. It was fun to watch them interact.

It does get a bit violent at times, so beware. I didn’t mind, as it didn’t get too gory. There was lots of action and you certainly never find yourself bored.

The publisher has this tagged as a FF pairing. That’s a bit misleading, I think. There is no romance at all in this story. We do have a very strong connection between two women, but it’s not romantic. Not yet, at least. Personally, I don’t always need a romance in my books, but I think the FF tag raises the wrong kind of expectations.

It’s no secret that I’m a sucker for well-written Science Fiction with good world building. To me, world building isn’t that cherry on top, but the very essence of any good SciFi story. And Ardulum does not disappoint in that regard.

But the thing is, there was just too much world building, in a way. What I didn’t realize is that this is a hard SciFi story. So lots of science and technology and hundreds of different aliens and epic space battles and the like. I’m not good with technology or science stuff, so I found it a bit tedious at times. It felt unnecessarily complicated.

There was also bit of too much telling and not enough showing going on. I mean, the Neek need three genders to reproduce. And then there’s species that seem to have only one gender and go by “they” or “xir”. If you’re gonna tell me you don’t need a man and a woman to make a baby, then I want to know just how that works. I don’t need explicit sex scenes, but I want to know just how reproduction works.

The author most certainly has a very creative mind. I’m really impressed with the sheer amount of detail J.S. Fields came up with is astonishing.

Long story short, I think “Ardulum: First Don” just wasn’t my genre. While I love Science Fiction, hard Science Fiction has never been my thing. I’m not good at any kind of natural sciences and I tend to get bored by too many facts.

I’m still a little torn on whether or not I want to read the rest of the series. I did enjoy the general idea and I really quite liked the MCs. And I do kinda want to find out what happens next…

The cover by Natasha Snow is gorgeous. I love the colours.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Imperial Stout (Trouble Brewing #1) by Layla Reyne

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

I must say that the first few chapters of this book were super confusing. I picked it up because it was first in a series and yes, I knew it was a spin-off of a previous series that many of my friends enjoyed. I thought coming in at the beginning of a new series would be a good place to start, but I was wrong. Throwing readers into action in the first chapter that used previous characters without an explanation as to the dynamics and relationships was very, very confusing. There really wasn’t even a backstory on their mission or their agencies or their work history, so unless someone reads the other series first, this is a tough one to read as a standalone.

Dominic “Nic” Price is a US attorney and he also owns a brewery. Cameron Byrne is a Special Agent with the FBI specializing in kidnap and rescue operations. Apparently, the two met and shared a first kiss in one of the books of the previous series so there’s somewhat of a relationship there at the start.

I had to consult the blurb a few times to keep the story straight because there was so much action and so many former character names and acronyms used that I was easily confused. Maybe it’s just me, but I like my stories to build slowly or at least give me a backstory immediately after the initial explosion of action, but I didn’t get that here. Then there’s a secondary plot that never gets resolved, but is apparently connected to Nic’s estrangement from his father. Someone is out to kill Nic, and somehow that’s connected to his father’s gambling debts. As the story closes, this subplot is brought back to the forefront so I suspect it’s going to be featured in the next book.

In the meantime, to get to the heart of the burglary and kidnapping that occurred in this story, Cam volunteers for an undercover operation that will be emotionally painful for him. It’s related to a tragedy in his past but it’s never quite clear exactly what that is. His coworkers and boss, who was away on his honeymoon as the story opened—another former book storyline—all seem to understand exactly why it’s a problem. Nevertheless, the main plot is resolved and he and Nic get together romantically by the end of the book, after a series of starts and stops due to work conflicts.

I would recommend this to someone who has read the author’s previous stories, but not to someone like me who had no clue of the history and backstory of this band of characters. Even now, days after finishing, I’m still trying to piece it together. Short of a full reread, which I’m not sure will help, I remain confused.

The cover features a close-up of a bearded man in business dress with a shaded older man in the background. It represents the couple in the story and is bright and attention-getting.

A Jeri Review: Sink or Swim (Anchor Point #8) by L.A. Witt

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

This is the final book in the Anchor Point series. They can all easily be read as stand alones. This book had very little from previous books, but we still saw a lot of cameos in one scene which was pretty cool.
Dylan- ship chaplain, is still recovering from a poisonous relationship of 8 years. And as he never claimed to be a perfect man, Christian OR chaplain, he has been known to engage in one night stands to scratch an itch. So when Alhazar walks into his office looking for a safe place to do his daily Muslim prayers, Dylan is extremely drawn to the man.
Dylan and Alhazar each come with some pretty serious baggage. Marriages of convenience that lead to divorce. Children. Their strong faiths. But through all of it, they couldn’t hold back from each other.
I really loved them together. I especially loved that they were in the 40-ish age range and not settled down. So many books have main characters in their 20’s so i love when the slightly older set is represented. I’ve also read a few books when one of the main characters is clergy of some sort- but in ALL of my reading (and trust me- I read a lot) I have never come across a Muslim main character. And I loved it.
Although bot men were very heavily into their respective faiths-  the story never got preachy at all. In fact, neither man used his faith as a shield or excuse. It was refreshing.
There were well developed side characters- including Alzahar’s children- who really belonged in the story and not just as filler.
The chemistry between Dylan and Alhazar was really hot. It was never forced- it was so natural, moving from a one night stand, to several nights, to a relationshp seemingly without either noticing.
There were parts that were repetitive or long winded. How many different people would apologize for cursing in front of a chaplain who curses himself? But anyway, That is what brought my review to 4 stars.
Excellent end to a series with a hint at the character(s) for the spin off f/f series coming.

Cover art: L.C. Chase.  It’s a gorgeous rendering of the male torso and works within the series covers as well.

A Manny Survival Kit

By Amy Lane

So in my last post, I admit that I was a sucktastic babysitter.  But after teaching for eighteen years–and being a parent for twenty-five—I have to admit, my childcaring skills have gotten better.

As a promotional item for Romantic Times this year, I put together a couple big baskets—I called them Manny survival kids—and I thought I’d put together a list of things I’ve learned you need when you are caring for people who need you.

  • Food. Yeah, I don’t care if the kid is past bottle time or no longer a toddler. Your fifteen-year-old can turn to you in the middle of walking the dogs and say, “Do we have anything to eat?”
  • Drink. Water bottles. Everywhere.
  • Entertainment. Before we leave the house for more than a half-hour we ask, “Do you have a book? Your phone? Knitting? Anything to keep you occupied if I have to talk to people you don’t know about stuff you don’t care about?” For littler kids, you have a different list—Doll? Car? Stuffed animal? Game? Yo-Yo? Bag of picture books? But trust me—it fills the same need.
  • Tissues. For runny noses, runny eyes, and oh-my-God-what-is-that-bug-on-your-shirt!
  • Baby wipes. Yes, when the kid is in diapers, this is a must. But I always carry them in my purse, even if my kids are older. Sticky hands, sticky faces, weird stuff on their clothes—it will all show up.
  • Hand sanitizer. For you. Well, sometimes for them. But mostly for you.
  • A plan. Is the kid sassing you? Have a consequence. Are they whining? Have something that will coax them out of it. Do they not liking changing what they’re doing? Remind them five minutes before you’re going to leave a place that they have five minutes to wrap up their business. A plan—a thing you can tell a kid will happen next—will make your day so much easier to get through.
  • Books. No, not for them. For you. Because once they’re occupied, or watching cartoons, or doing homework, or asleep, you need a place to go in your head where you don’t have to worry about telling a kid they need to put down that unrecognizable animal because you promised their mother they wouldn’t have a disease when you got them home for lunch. Especially if you are their mother.
  • A bag. Because seriously, you need a bag to carry all that in,

So, yes.

You need to carry all that around because you never know when you need it.

But you also need a few things you can’t fit in the bag.

Compassion, intuitiveness, quick thinking, and a sense of humor.

Especially that last one.

And maybe an extra dose of compassion.

So there you go—all the things you need to carry around with you in order to care for yours—or other people’s—children.

Hopefully you can find all these things and more when you read my Mannies series.  I gave the guys all the things I frequently forgot in my first few years. Even the sense of humor.

A Fool and His Manny

By Amy Lane

Dustin Robbins-Grayson was a surly adolescent when Quinlan Gregory started the nanny gig. After a rocky start, he grew into Quinlan’s friend and confidant—and a damned sexy man.

At twenty-one, Dusty sees how Quinlan sacrificed his own life and desires to care for Dusty’s family. He’s ready to claim Quinlan—he’s never met a kinder, more capable, more lovable man. Or a lonelier one. Quinlan has spent his life as the stranger on the edge of the photograph, but Dusty wants Quinlan to be the center of his world. First he has to convince Quinlan he’s an adult, their love is real, and Quinlan can be more than a friend and caregiver. Can he show Quin that he deserves to be both a man and a lover, and that in Dusty’s eyes, he’s never been “just the manny?”

Excerpt

Seven Years’ Distance

QUINLAN GREGORY’S body hurt. All of it. Every molecule.

He hauled the last suitcase out of the Lyft and paid the guy, then started carting his luggage—and his trumpet case—gingerly across the driveway, avoiding clots of dirt and tufts of grass on the concrete as he went.

Jacob had told him during his last phone call that the dog had gotten out and brutalized the new sod, but Quinlan hadn’t believed what a massacre it was until now. Anybody else would have disowned the ginger-haired mutt—aptly nicknamed Hellhound by Belinda, one of their daughters—but not Jacob and Nica Robbins-Grayson.

Quinlan’s bosses had a knack for picking up people and animals and giving them a home and then thanking them for all their help.

He should know—he’d been their manny for nearly seven years.

Their youngest, St. Peter (or, well, Peter, but Jacob and Nica insisted on calling him St. Peter in the hopes that God would be appeased and might not create a holy miracle and bless them with a seventh child) was seven this year, and Quinlan was wondering when they were going to let him go.

This job had been sort of a dream for a musician who traveled during the summer and took classes and worked night gigs in jazz bars the other nine months out of the year—but Quinlan’s last college tour had ended four days ago in a miasma of pain and dysentery, and he was twenty-seven years old.

It was high time he grew up, became an adult, stopped living in Jacob and Nica’s garage apartment, and found something responsible to do.

But first he wanted his snug little rooms, with the paneling Jacob had put in before he moved in, and the hardwood floors, and the rug Quin had bought in Vancouver, and the bed he’d put on layaway until Nica had bought it for him as a surprise when he’d come home from his summer tour the first time.

His fish tank.

The fuzzy blanket the kids had gotten him for his third Christmas with the Robbins-Graysons.

The pictures of him and the kids and the whole family at birthdays, graduations, and three weddings, including Sammy’s.

Oh, Sammy.

God. His home. It was his home, and he felt like crap on a cracker, and he needed his home.

He hauled the luggage up the stairs, both bags with his trumpet case under his arm, and was going to use the key but the knob twisted under his hand. Uh-oh—somebody must have left it open when they were feeding the fish. Maybe Dustin.

Dustin had been in his apartment. For a moment that shocked him out of his misery, even though the kids had been in and out of his apartment since the beginning, but then his stomach cramped again.

Well, no worries. The couch and television seemed unmolested, although there was a dirty dish and a coffee cup in the sink.

Quinlan set his luggage down, relieved beyond words. He worked out and ran—normally he was pretty strong, but after the stomach bug kept him hugging the toilet for four days, well, he was about done.

So ordinarily he would have noticed that the air conditioner was on, and someone was watching something in the bedroom, and every light and ceiling fan in the apartment was running.

But he was busy stripping his sweat-soaked shirt over his head, so it didn’t really hit him that somebody else was in the house until he opened the bedroom door and saw….

Oh God.

“Quin?” Dustin’s voice would hit him later—gravelly and breathy from passion.

What hit him first was the sight of the tall, muscular young man lying naked in his bed, cock in his hand, as Quinlan opened the door.

“Holy God, I’m sorry!” Quinlan shouted, slamming the door behind him. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Dusty. I’m sorry.”

“Jesus, Quin, what the fuck are you doing here?”

“Got sick.” Quinlan leaned against the door, weak and shaky. “Came home early. I’m sorry—I didn’t—wait.” Oh hell, he was really losing his touch. “Dustin Matthew Robbins-Grayson, were you jerking off in my bed?”

“Shut up!” Dustin shouted hotly, and Quinlan fought a flashback to those charming teenage years when the man currently naked in his room had been a Class 5 adolescent prick. “Shut up! I thought you were gone for five more days! How was I supposed to know?”

Quin’s head was swimming. “You weren’t,” he said, feeling dizzy and off balance and… oh hell, aroused. Dustin was twenty-one—not a child anymore—and the vision of him on the bed, legs spread, erect, abandoned to his own touch, was going to haunt Quin for possibly the rest of his life. “You weren’t supposed to know I was home. But what are you doing here?”

“Forget it,” Dustin muttered. “Look, just move away from the door. I’m dressed now. Pretend this didn’t happen. And—oh Jesus, if you tell my parents, I’m jumping off a bridge.”

Tell his parents? As. If.

“Dusty!” Quin cajoled, trying to inject humor into what, well, should have been a humorous situation. “Dusty, please. Man, I feel like shit, and it’s hotter than ass outside. Just… just let me shower and lie down on the bed and get some rest, and you can couch and tell me what you were doing here later, okay?”

“Quin….” Dustin’s voice held a familiar note—but one almost forgotten. Quin, you don’t get it. You’ll never understand.

And Quin found himself panicking. They’d been okay when he’d left, right? Well, they’d been changing—but they’d been okay. Dustin’s texts, his persistent, grown-up, take-me-as-I-am texts had been more than okay. They’d even had Quin dreaming… hoping… because Dustin had grown up. Right?

Oh dear God yes, he’s grown up. His chest has grown and his nipples have grown and his cock has grown….

Quinlan whimpered, because his head hurt and his heart was starting to hurt. Dustin was an adult now, and he made plenty of money working for his father at Jacob’s garage chain. He had resources. He really could flit out of Quinlan’s life like a butterfly.

“Dustin,” he begged, on about his last nerve, “please, man. Don’t rocket out of here like this. Just… just let me cool off and drink some water and we can talk. We were there, right? We were… we were doing okay, right? Don’t… don’t tell me we have to start from scratch again.”

“Would you?” Dustin asked suspiciously. “Start from scratch?”

“Well, yeah!” Quinlan said, exasperated. “Dustin, I’ve been part of your life for seven years. Do you think I want you to just take off and cut me out? Because I walked in on you… uh….” Masturbating in my bed? He made a sound then—a weak, sad one—and Dustin spoke, sounding like he’d made a decision.

“We’ll talk about what I was doing later.”

The doorknob turned, and Quinlan moved away so Dustin could open it.

For a moment they were face-to-face, Dustin with his straight brown hair parted on the side and swept over his forehead. He had hazel eyes—an odd combination of brown and gray—and a bold nose with a short jaw and strong chin. He’d been cute as a kid, but Quinlan had noticed in the past couple of years that he’d grown into a stunningly handsome man.

“You look like death, Q,” Dustin said, letting go of the defensiveness of being caught pants down, so to speak. And then… then he rocked Quinlan’s world. He reached out and grazed Quinlan’s cheek with the back of his knuckles. “I’m sorry I yelled. Go shower. I’ll get you an ice water, okay?”

Quinlan nodded weakly. “That’s sweet. Thanks—”

Dustin stopped him with—oh God—a finger across his lips. Unbidden, another moment flashed behind Quin’s eyes, of Dusty’s touch on his lips. “Not sweet,” Dustin whispered. “You know me better than anybody else in the world. You know what I’m not?”

Dustin had been rambunctious, hostile, precocious, and irritating. But according to the people who loved him best, he’d never been “sweet.”

Maybe. Quinlan had seen—in the last seven years, he’d seen the other parts of him, parts that even his parents might not have seen.

“I don’t buy the bad press,” Quin said, smiling slightly and pretending Dustin’s work-roughened finger on his chapped, tender lips wasn’t trying to light fires on a sweat-sodden peat bog. “Here—” He moved sideways and stayed leaning against the door. “I… I really have to clean up.” He’d thrown up on the plane. Twice. His muscles were already trembling from hauling his luggage up to the door.

Dustin stepped out of the room, wearing a T-shirt and cargo shorts, and looked him over critically. “All right,” he said, turning to take Quinlan’s elbow. “Let me run a bath. Let’s get you in some cool water, I’ll get you some Gatorade and some salt tablets, and let me call Mom.” He pulled Quinlan to the bathroom beyond the bedroom and sat him on the toilet before he ran the water.

Quin leaned back against the back of the commode and tried to ignore the cramping in his gut, now that the excitement was over.

“Yeah,” Dustin was saying as he ran the bath. “I, uh, actually had permission to be here—Mom and Dad thought you were going to be gone for another few days, and my apartment was getting recarpeted. I, uh—I mean, not that I didn’t like sleeping in your bed and all—”

He peeked up at Quinlan over his shoulder, looking coy and boyish—two words Quin had never associated with him. Ever. It took a moment to put together what he was actually saying.

Quinlan frowned. “You were… uh… thinking of… uh….” Oh God. No. Not now.

He slid off the seat and landed on his knees and lifted up the lid. As the cramps shook him and he heaved, he was aware of Dustin’s cool hand on his brow, of his strong arms and chest keeping Quinlan grounded.

“Jesus, Q, you’re in bad shape,” Dustin muttered. “Of all the shitty times…. Here.”

Quinlan wasn’t sure how it happened. He stopped heaving fluid, and as he was panting and recovering, Dustin, the kid he’d helped raise from puberty on, hefted him up, stripped him down, and set him in a lukewarm bath.

Not cold enough to make him shiver. Not hot enough to make him sweat.

He lay back against the tub and caught his breath, closing his eyes. “Thanks,” he mumbled.

“Don’t thank me yet,” Dustin muttered. “I’ll be right back with water and salt and some carbs—and my mom.”

“Oh Jesus. Your mom’s gonna see me naked?” Quinlan whined. He respected the holy hell out of Dustin’s mom. He sort of wanted to die just thinking about it.

“I’ll call Dad, then,” Dustin snapped. “Whatever. You look like shit, and I’m worried. And if you say I’m sweet, it’s my turn to puke.”

“But you are,” Quinlan murmured to Dustin’s retreating back. “I remember. You think I don’t remember how sweet you are?”

“Fuck off, Quin.”

But Quinlan’s eyes were closed, and he was drifting in the tepid water. Back, back, back, seven years ago, at the park wedding of Taylor Cochran and Brandon Grayson. Back to a warm, bright September day seven years ago, when the red dust of the foothills seemed to stain the very air, and Quinlan’s friend—Dustin’s cousin, Sammy Lowell—was looking happy, if not healthy, and very much in love.

And Quinlan was fighting off a terrible case of woe-is-me.
