A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Leaning Into Always (Leaning Into Stories #1.5) by Lane Hayes

Let me start by saying I love Lane Hayes’s work, so I immediately jumped at the chance to read this one for review. I was given three weeks, but I took less than three days to read it, savor it, and write this review. This story was delicious, delightful, and decadent. Better than a fine piece of chocolate!

Set in San Francisco, this story was originally part of an anthology and is now going to be the start of a new series. All I can say is “Sign me up!” because if the rest are anything like this one, I’m all in.

There’s not much I love more than a geek, so I was quite happy to find that Eric Shuster is that and more. He’s also cute, humble, sweet, and the type of person who sees to the needs of his friends before his own. His work partner and ex-lover, Nick, has announced that he’s getting married, but Eric can see immediately that he’s marrying for money, not love. The girl is the daughter of a wealthy investor and Nick is always on the lookout for more funds for their technology company, whether they need them or not.

As the story evolves, Eric finally faces the fact that he and Nick were really never in love, just friends and fuck buddies, and there’s no reason to grieve his loss. He ends up spending more time with his friends, especially Zane Richards, a handsome sportsman who loves his water sports, whether they be surfing, water polo, or sailing. In fact, Zane has his own company working with the wealthy who need an experienced yachtsman to simply sail or to race. Eric and Zane become closer than they’ve ever been in the dozen years they’ve known each other as they rediscover their likes and dislikes and explore a deeper connection than the usual surface level among friends.

I highly enjoyed watching their friends-to-lovers relationship develop. Ms. Hayes provided the perfect amount of heat and humor and even a little angst, though thankfully that wasn’t overdone. Just give me a love story that will cheer me up, make me break out my personal fan, and leave me feeling warm and fuzzy and you’ve made my day. This one made my day. I highly recommend it to all MM romance lovers, and especially to those who enjoy friends-to-lovers romances. Yummy!

“I think we need to clear the air,” Jonathon said in a calm, rational voice.

“There’s nothing to clear,” I countered. “I’m nothing to you; you’re nothing to me.”

“You think it’s that simple?” Jonathon took two steps toward me. I took three steps back. Jon jerked to a stop when he saw my reaction. “Emory…” He broke off and ran both his hands through his hair. “I know you felt it the night we met. I saw your eyes widen in surprise when the electricity shot through our bodies.”

“So.” Denying it existed wasn’t working. It was time to change tactics. “That doesn’t mean I want or will act on it.” I ran my hand over the infinity tattoo I had inked over my heart. It felt like River’s name was burning my skin like he knew the truth and was calling me a liar. Or, maybe it was anxiety that gripped my heart in its tight fist. Whatever the reason, I felt lightheaded and dizzy. Suddenly, my body felt cold and hot at the same time, and tiny little needles pricked my skin from head to toe. I licked my lips that had suddenly gone dry and numb.

“Emory?” I heard Jonathon’s voice, but it sounded like he was calling to me at the end of a very long tunnel instead of five feet away. He walked toward me, but I kept backing away. I hoped he would stop, but I saw the determination in his eyes. “Emory, I just want to help you.”

“Then leave,” I wheezed between gasps.

“I’d never leave anyone alone in this condition,” Jonathon said angrily. “Now be quiet and let me help you.” He gripped my bicep firmly, but not painfully, and guided me to a kitchen chair. He gently set me in the chair then placed his hand on my stomach beneath the center of my ribs and the other on my chest. I burned beneath his touch. I wrapped my hands around his thick wrists and tried to push his hands off of me. “Stop it, Emory,” he said firmly. “You’re hyperventilating, and I can help you. I. Will. Not. Hurt. You.”

Hot tears of humiliation flowed freely down my face. No one had ever seen me in the midst of a panic attack and I’d always been able to pull myself out of them on my own. That one was different, and I knew I needed help.

“Ignore my hands on your body, but look into my eyes and listen to me.” His demanding, deep voice was nearly hypnotic. “Inhale deeply through your nose, Emory. Hold it for a count of three and release it slowly. When you do, you’ll feel my hands moving up and down with your lungs, and your brain will recognize you’re breathing even before the fresh oxygen pushes the carbon dioxide out of your body. Do it with me, Emory.”

I breathed in slowly, held it for three seconds, and released it. I focused on the way his hands moved up and down with my breathing and pretended that I expelled all the bad energy with every exhale. I repeated the process ten or twelve times before I was completely calm again.

Jonathon pulled his hands off of me and balled them into fists. He didn’t look angry or like he wanted to hit me. It looked like he needed to do something with his hands but wasn’t sure what. He lowered himself into a chair beside me.

“What caused your panic attack?”

“You,” I replied sullenly.

“Emory, I haven’t done anything to you so why would the sight of me cause you to panic?” Jonathon sounded truly baffled and a little insulted.

I knew it would take drastic measures to push him away, so I let him have it with both barrels. “I had a psychic vision about you—well. Us.”

I am a wife and mother to three kids, three dogs, and a cat. When I’m not dreaming up stories, I like to lose myself in a good book, cook or bake. I’m a girly tomboy

who paints her fingernails while watching sports and yelling at the referees.

I will always choose the book over the movie. I believe in happily-ever-after. Love inspires everything that I do. Music keeps me sane.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Waking the Behr (Foothills Pride #7) by Pat Henshaw

Good old boy Ben has dated women his entire life, while gay nightclub owner Mitch has never considered unsophisticated country boys his type. But after they start hanging out, the small-town contractor and the urban entrepreneur are both stunned by the electricity sparking between them.

As they step outside their comfort zones to spend time together, Mitch finds he enjoys rural car rallies, and Ben is intrigued by the upscale bars Mitch owns in San Francisco. When they share their lives and grow closer, they start to question the way they’ve always defined themselves. Then they kiss and fling open the door to love. Now they must step up and travel the road that may lead to happily ever after—even if that path isn’t one they ever expected to walk.

Waking the Behr is another cute story in The Foothills Pride series by Pat Henshaw. Mitch O’Shea and Ben Behr meet at the remains of Thompson’s old steakhouse, a building Mitch has just bought and wants Ben’s (of Behr Construction) help to transform into a new family friendly restaurant. They make an instant connection that Henshaw brings alive in one great scene:

So I was surprised when I opened the door to the gutted restaurant and found a giant of a man twirling Julie Andrews’style. He was grinning like a loon as the light poured over him.

That should have been laughable since he was alone, but he was kickass savoring the moment. Instead of appearing loco, he struck me as a big overgrown Peter Pan. He looked so happy, I had an urge to join him, which gave me a moment of panic because I’m not an old boy who does much dancing or cavorting–in public or in private.

“Uh, hello? Mr. O?Shea?”

When he turned toward me, my jaw dropped. I’m sure I musta looked like the village idiot.

That’s Ben’s first look at Mitch and vice versa. Boom! Connection made.

From there, Pat Henshaw treats her readers to a friends to lovers story that I just adored. Along the way, Ben figures out that yes, he’s attracted to men too which means that Ben is probably bisexual. There was a whole momentarily “damn am I turning gay?” which made me wonder what century he was in, especially since he had gay brothers he’s fond of and talks to often as he works with them. Luckily the rest of the story redeemed that totally awkward and awful aspect (but yes, it pulled down the ratings). I mean really Ben is in a town that’s increasingly LGBTQ friendly and he thinks it rubs off like Shea butter? Smh!

There is no instant love here. The timeline gets moved forward scene by scene so it’s clear that the men have moved into a friendship, gone camping, and spent considerable time together before falling in love which I liked.

Both characters come across as intelligent, warm hearted and loving. I enjoyed their dance towards romance and a HEA. I also love that we get to see other characters from previous stories play minor roles here. It’s nice to see them again.

At 88 pages, this is a quick read (as are all the stories). I’ve given up hoping to see longer versions here. But it’s such a nice series that even the short romances are a great way to spend some time. I recommend them to those who love to read contemporary romances.

Would it be Okay to Love You? (Would It Be Okay to Love You? #1) by Amy Tasukada is a sweet gentle romance set in Japan. Readers familiar with Yaoi or Boy’s Love manga will recognize that Amy Tasukada loves this form of fiction and in a way pays homage to it with this lovely series and story.

I’m a fan of this author whose tales are often located in Japan, both historical and contemporary. Her knowledge and love of the culture and people is as much a part of her stories as are the plots, they enhance them even as they are supplying an amazing foundation for her characters and world building.

Here Tasukada gives us Sato, shy nerd accountant at a anime studio and Aoi, a voice actor just becoming popular who meet at an anime store. Between them, they have raised enough walls that it will take time for them to work their way to the relationship they want and need. I loved that Sato goes with his family to the shrine and makes a wish for romance. It’s sweet and so innocent in a way. Plus a great contrast to Aoi, who is scrambling just to make ends meet and is much more street wise.

If you’ve read the author’s stories, then you know this is a slow-burn romance accompanied by terrific scenes that inform you about Tokyo and clubbing. Here’s an example:

They strolled to the karaoke club. Sato rambled on about more aspects of his job. It wasn’t the most thrilling conversation, but the way Sato?s eyes glistened with light when he talked about numbers had its charm.

White walls with neon lights greeted them as they entered the karaoke club. Vinyl decals of classic anime characters reached from floor to ceiling. There was no doubt they were in Akihabara, the geek epicenter of Tokyo. If they ran through the offered songs, more than half would be anime songs from the past decade. Although, if Aoi really had to admit to himself, he was probably as nerdy about boys’ love as Sato was with Gundam robots. They both belonged in Akihabara.

The receptionist handed them microphones and escorted them to their room. A white sofa lined the decaled back wall, and a thick binder of songs sat on a table. The room was small, but two people didn’t need anything bigger.

What follows is a funny, charming scene where Sato and Aoi listen to CDs and sing karaoke. I ending up just smiling and laughing along with them, totally won over. I had also learned something new about going out in the Akihabara!

If you love romance, here is one to check out. It’s a quick read, it has characters that you will easily connect with and a romance to root for. I loved it.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Release Day Review: I Heart Boston Terriers by Rick R. Reed

A sweet little snippet about love for a dog who needs a second chance and for a man who needs one as well. In honor of the author’s Boston Terrier, Lily, who is well known to those of us who follow his social media, Mr. Reed has created a darling love story sure to whet the appetite of those who love MM romance and those who love their pups.

Aaron accompanied his sister to the pet store to buy supplies for her cat and they both fell in love with a timid little Boston Terrier who was quaking in fear in her cage. Aaron also caught the attention of the handsome guy who was volunteering with the Humane Society and between the two positive forces—man and beast—he was toast. Even though he’s with his sister because his relationship broke up, and he’s virtually homeless and jobless, that cute guy did indeed catch his attention.

When he brings the dog home, her fear keeps her under his sister’s bed and out of Aaron’s arms. Thankfully, whether appropriate or not, the good-looking volunteer calls him to see how Mavis the dog is doing, and one thing leads to another, and before you know it, the two men are out walking the dog and exploring their mutual attraction. After a bit of trouble earlier in the day, Mavis already had two legs out the door—it seems she ate his sister’s Jimmy Choo shoes—an incredibly bad move, so a walk seems appropriate. As the men walk, they talk, and again one thing leads to another, and they’re caught en flagrante when his sister returns home.

This is a very short story, but full of sweetness and possibility—both for the dog and for Aaron’s future. The only negative for me is the behavior change in Aaron’s sister. One day she encourages him to get the dog and insists it won’t be an issue, even though they’ll be sharing a studio apartment, and the next she’s totally against the dog and wants her returned. Granted, the shoes were a huge issue for her, but the way she continued to insist the dog be sent back seemed over-the-top. I guess it was needed for plot flow but not my cuppa, so it kept my rating closer to a three. On the other hand, I do think the story is well-worth reading, and I recommend it to brighten an otherwise gloomy day, especially for all dog lovers.

A MelanieM Review: Pop Tart (Asian Idols #2) by Shawn Bailey

Taemin Park was once a member of the hottest K-Pop group in South Korea, but he isn’t a cute kid anymore and he hasn’t been on a stage in four years. Taemin has been blacklisted in the music world and labeled a trouble-maker for standing up for his rights. But after two years of military duty and two years of soul searching he decides to go back into show business. He offers his services to his old friend entertainment mogul Ace Reign, who jumps at the chance to put Taemin back at the top of the charts again and knows just the guy to manage him.

Aiden Reign is very popular with both the ladies and the men, but he’s never held down a legitimate job in his life. So when his father suggests he take on a job of manager of a pop-star turned R&B singer, Aiden freaks out. He’s used to his father giving him an allowance and he is perfectly okay with that. But now faced with the dilemma of growing up, Aiden decides to do give it his all, especially after he meets the gorgeous young man his father wants him to manage.

I had such high hopes from reading the blurb but to be honest I barely made it through the story. So many elements here made it feel like a dry, emotion free tale instead of one sweet romance of pop stars in South Korea.

One definitely was the style of writing here. It felt entirely too talky. Everything was over described from their meals to the main characters daily routines, dress until it felt like a checklist of things the author wanted to get into the story…over and over again. Secondly, the romance or relationship or whatever you want to call it between Aiden and Taemin is weirdly a turn off. Instant sex that is very all sorts of non sexy, a instant love on one character’s part that’s never really explained or given adequate background, and again just a lack of connection between the two characters so vast that the whole story came across more like a business deal than a love story.

What did I like? The cultural elements. I got an excellent exposure to the world of K-pop, the Korean music scene, and Korean culture. I did enjoy how that aspect of the story made a very solid foundation for what could have been a sweet romance. But it’s not enough to save the love story which is the main focus here.

Cover art is wonderful. It definitely drew me to the book.

This was a different story. Terry seems to be content following the crowd at the beginning of the story but quickly makes his real self known to Clyde and will push for what he wants. Clyde and Terry quickly begin to build a relationship despite Clyde’s pack’s dislike of Terry’s warlock nature.

Terry and Clyde seem to build their relationship for the most part in the back ground and the conflict with Clyde’s pack is more to the forefront. Clyde is heart broken when the truth about Terry is revealed and everything they thought was wrong. I am interested to what happens in the next story after Terry comes back,, I’m still a little confused as to how it happened.

The cover art by Sidney Lowell is great picture and is eye-catching.

Texan to the bone and an unrepentant Daddy’s Girl, BA Tortuga spends her days with her basset hounds and her beloved wife, texting her sisters, and eating Mexican food. When she’s not doing that, she’s writing. She spends her days off watching rodeo, knitting and surfing Pinterest in the name of research. BA’s personal saviors include her wife, Julia Talbot, her best friend, Sean Michael, and coffee. Lots of coffee. Really good coffee.

Having written everything from fist-fighting rednecks to hard-core cowboys to werewolves, BA does her damnedest to tell the stories of her heart, which was raised in Northeast Texas, but has heard the call of the high desert and lives in the Sandias.
