Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have April Kelley here today to talk about her latest release Ashley and the series Demon Elite.  Welcome, April.

Demon Elite is not a Paranormal Romance series

That’s right. The Demon Elite series doesn’t have one shred of a paranormal element in it. Don’t get me wrong. I love paranormal romance. It’s my favorite sub-genre as a matter of fact. It’s just that Demon Elite is not in that category, even though it sounds like it might fit in there.

The only way it does is that the main characters fight like Demons. You see, Demon Elite is a team of assassins. Mostly, they take out the criminals in the sex trafficking industry. They all feel very strongly about what they do and the goal they’d like to achieve, which is to stop sex slavery and trafficking completely. They used to work for a secret government agency, but had to leave when they learned their leader was also selling human beings to the highest bidder. Now they are independent contractors on a mission to stop they’re ex-boss.

The Demon Elite team works very closely with the Newell Brothers. If you’ve read Lakehouse Security, then you’ll recognize that last name from those books. Both teams are currently living and working in the lakehouse mansion so the Lakehouse Security boys visit the Demon Elite stories from time to time.

While I was writing Locke’s Love (Lakehouse Security #4), I needed a name for Locke’s team. My son, who loves video games (he’s a teenager) said something about a person having DeMon13 as a gamer tag in some shoot’em up video game. So that had to creative juices flowing long enough for me to come up with the rest on my own.

Thank you DeMon13, whoever you are.

So, yes it’s a contemporary romance series about a group of assassins. For those that love paranormal, though, I get it completely. I love shifters and vampires as much as you do. I even have a paranormal series available. It’s sold everywhere books are. But I just have one question: have you tried an assassin?

A MelanieM Review: North Star (North Star #1-3) by Posy Roberts

Rating: 4.75 stars out of 5

North StarHugo and Kevin were best friends and secret lovers in high school, but a chance meeting years later proves that the spark that drew them together before is still there. In Spark, Hugo and Kevin must try to put together a relationship while overcoming the obstacles of coming out, divorce and children. In Fusion, an unexpected illness may tear apart all they’ve been building. And in Flare, though they’ve finally settled together happily, outside forces are working hard to upset their family.

North Star is a bundle of all three of Posy Robert’s North Star trilogy stories, a total of 876 pages of wonderful contemporary m/m romance and true love.   Its one thing to have them as separate stories (blurbs below), but its another to read it as one long saga of a love affair that starts as young teenagers, reunited later as grown men.  How would that work?

Pretty smoothly actually.  I found the flow was almost seamless.  As one story ended, the next picked up almost at the same point, making it to continue your connections to the characters and all the many threads the author is working here.  But at the same time, close to 900 pages is a lot to read at one sitting (I know). So if you need to stop at one book, and then continue on later, well, you can do that too and still be able to pick up Hugo and Kevin’s story.

In fact, I think I might recommend you still do that.   I loved these stories.  And the characters, Hugo especially.  Hugo is such a bundle of contradictions, so human.  He’s vibrant, vulnerable, and he comes alive on every page.  So too does his friends, especially Summer.  Kevin and his household too get into your heart, from his soon to be ex wife Erin and his children.  But a huge 900 page dose of Kevin almost proved too much for me.  I understood the reasons why he behaved as he did, Posy Roberts made that very clear.  But I think perhaps it went on too long, at least for me, and in those wonderful words of Cher, I dearly wanted him to “snap out of it” long before Flare started.  What kept me and my impatience in check was the timeline and the events that were happening.

There are some very wonderful and moving elements here, including a complication with Kevin’s wife.  How this is handled is one of the stars I think of the series.  The dynamics between the three of the them, and the children, the growth of Kevin and Hugo’s relationship at this stage as well as having Erin’s point of view in Fusion?  It made this my favorite story of the three.  It felt real, loving, and got straight to my heart.

Spark – Book 1:North Star: Book One Rating:  4.5 stars out of 5

In their small-town high school, Hugo and Kevin became closeted lovers who kept their secret even from parents. Hugo didn’t want to disappoint his terminally ill father, and Kevin’s controlling father would never tolerate a bisexual son. When college took them in different directions, they promised to reunite, but that didn’t happen for seventeen years.

By the time they meet again, Hugo has become an out-and-proud actor and director who occasionally performs in drag—a secret that has cost him in past relationships. Kevin, still closeted, has followed his father’s path and now, in the shadow of divorce, is striving to be a better father to his own children.

When Hugo and Kevin meet by chance at a party, the spark of attraction reignites, as does their genuine friendship. Rekindling a romance may mean Hugo must compromise the openness he values, but Kevin will need a patient partner as he adapts to living outside the closet. With such different lifestyles, the odds seem stacked against them, and Hugo fears that if his secret comes to light, it may drive Kevin away completely.

Fusion – Book 2: Rating 5 stars out of 5

How do you tell your friends and family you’ve fallen in love with a man when they’ve only ever known you as straight? How do you explain to your kids that you loved their mother very much, but your new partner is your best friend from high school?

Kevin Magnus must figure it out while trying to build a relationship with Hugo Thorson, whose bigger than life, out-and-proud drag queen persona is simply too big to be contained in a closet—even for the time it takes Kevin to come up with an explanation for his kids and Erin, his soon-to-be ex-wife.

But Erin faces an even bigger obstacle—one that shakes the entire family to the core. When she unexpectedly turns to Hugo, they form a connection that forces Hugo to grow up and offers Kevin the chance to become the kind of father he wants to be. Despite the coming complications, they’ll all benefit from a fortunate side effect: it becomes clear that Hugo is very much a part of this unconventional family.

Flare – final book in the North Star Trilogy  Rating: 4.75 stars out of 5

Hugo Thorson and Kevin Magnus are learning to live again after the death of Kevin’s wife, Erin. They’re doing everything they can to make a stable home for Kevin’s kids, but that stability is threatened when Kevin is served legal documents: Erin’s parents want custody of Brooke and Finn.

Meanwhile, Hugo is offered several acting jobs; to encourage him to take them, Kevin hires a nanny who is very hands-on with the kids. But Hugo feels distanced from his new family, so he makes the decision to leave his eclectic neighborhood and moves in with Kevin. He quickly finds he has a hard time fitting in with the suburbanites, and Kevin’s passive-aggressive “friends” make Hugo feel anything but welcome. Yet he keeps his concerns a secret and tries to take it all in stride.

When Brooke is bullied about having two dads, Hugo realizes his mere presence might be doing more harm than good. The stress will force him to make a choice: does he stay and fight for the family he loves, or does he walk away to let them live in peace?

In the final story, Posy Roberts pulls it all together, the struggles, the relationship and personal growth the men go through in order to become the true partners and family unit they have been dreaming and working towards from the moment they reunited and perhaps even longer, the moment they met.  I think this is where Kevin finally clicked for me as a character and as the perfect ying to Hugo’s yang.   It also deals with another strong topic, bullying.  Again, its addressed in a direct and wonderful way by the author by using Brooke, the daughter we have come to know and care about just as deeply as the main characters.

How do I love these characters?  Oh so much.  By the time the last sentence rolls around, I was so sorry to see them all go.  I think you will be too.  Having them all in one bundle makes it so easy to pick up and enjoy them all over again.

Need not one but three stories to perk up your summer reading?  Love contemporary romance and lovers reunited?  Pick up North Star (North Star #1-3) by Posy Roberts, a 3 in 1 total package of romance and reading enjoyment.  I highly recommend it.

Cover art by Anne Cain works for the characters.  Its lovely.

The Books You Love are Back in One Bundle! North Star (Spark-Fusion-Flare) by Posy Roberts (giveaway)

NorthStar-altNearly three years ago, North Star was released book by book. Now you can get the entire series as a bundle!

In the summer of 2012, I was in a tizzy to get a story down that would become my North Star trilogy. I was afraid if I didn’t get it down as fast as possible, I would lose everything. Sometimes I woke in the middle of the night and went to my keyboard and wrote for hours. Other times I sat at the lake, my laptop battery charring my thigh more than the sun at my back, and type away as fast as my fingers would fly.

The story came to me in a strangely inspired way and I knew it couldn’t be told in just one book. It had to be three, even if the story was always intended to be read together.

Spark was released at the beginning of September 2013, with Fusion and Flare following in November and then January. That’s really close together for a series, so I was lucky Dreamspinner Press released them one right after the other. People have had to wait years between George R.R. Martin or J.K. Rowling books.

And now North Star is in a bundle! *cheers wildly*

The story arc spanning all three books is how Hugo and Kevin figure out how they can be together and stay together despite all the odds. And they face many obstacles over the years, starting with Kevin’s father in high school. Lucky for them, they get a second chance at love in their thirties, years after they drifted apart in college.

NorthStarBanner

As authors, we take risks when we put out a series. There is always reader drift and I know not everyone will pick up subsequent books. I’m guilty of that myself. I move on to another book or series and by the time the next book comes out, I’m not around to see the release announcment or my interests have changed. That’s why I’m really excited about this bundle. I can’t wait to see how new readers will react to all three books together.

Just a few weeks ago I followed along as a reader picked up Spark and commented on Twitter as she read. She immediately picked up Fusion and then moved on to Flare and read them all in a few days. She loved the series, recommending it to all her followers, and I teared up with each of her tweets. What she loved about the stories is what I loved so much about Hugo and Kevin, their genuine love and devotion for each other and their family.

When I set out to write North Star, my intention was to tell a realistic story about a complex family that fought for each other, challenged each other, and lifted each other up. Some of what they are up against completely sucks, just like some of the crap we have to deal with in our own lives. Now you can enjoy the ride to three happy ever afters in a matter of days!

In high school, Hugo and Kevin discover they are perfect for each other. Sadly they fell in love years too early to make a solid commitment, and college and other relationships got in the way. Fifteen years later they meet again, and all those old feelings are rekindled. Second chances at such perfect love don’t happen every day. Hugo and Kevin immediately know they’re meant to be, but figuring out a way to combine their divergent lives without rocking their well-established boats is the challenge. If that’s even possible. Perhaps their love is worth upending the worlds they know.

Falling in love again is easy. Fitting into each other’s complicated lives isn’t.North Star for WP FI

image009Posy Roberts writes about the realistic struggles of men looking for love. Whether her characters are family men, drag queens, or lonely men searching for connections, they all find a home in her stories.

Posy is a Jill of all trades and master of the drill and paintbrush. She’s married to a partner who makes sure she doesn’t forget to eat or sleep during her writing frenzies. Her daughter, a budding author and cinematographer, helps her come up with character names. For fun, Posy enjoys crafting, geocaching, and singing spontaneously about the mundane, just to make regular life more interesting.

A MelanieM Review: Blind Date by Kay Doherty

Rating: 3.75 rounded up to 4 stars out of 5

Blind DateDekker Callan is content with his life though he knows something is missing. Wanting the kind of love his friends share with their partners, Dekker is talked into taking part in a modeling and dating show as part of a fundraiser. He immediately falls in love with the anonymous, sexy voice on the other side of the wall, but fate has a surprise in store–his mystery man isn’t single.

Slade Gannon wasn’t supposed to take part in the dating show. That spot was for his roommate, Phil, who becomes ill and asks Slade to take his place. Slade has just recently gone through a breakup with his cheating boyfriend, George. Shocked and pleased when he wins the interest of handsome Dekker Callan, before he can go on the obligatory blind date, his ex asks for a second chance. Believing Dekker can’t possibly be as good on the inside as he looks on the outside, Slade agrees.

Dekker and Slade hit it off immediately, drawn to each other despite Slade being involved with someone else. They finally get their opportunity to be together when Slade finds out his boyfriend is still cheating, but just as they seem to discover the happiness they’ve been waiting for, George throws them one last hurdle—and this one may prove to be insurmountable.

Blind Date by Kay Doherty was an enjoyable fun contemporary romance, that starts off with a blind date that goes incredibly right and then incredibly wrong.  What fun!

Dekker Callan’s best friend talks him into a charity modeling show and sort of Dating Game fundraiser.  I thought this was a nice element and its handled with a light and sexy touch by the author.  You don’t get to see the men just as Dekker doesn’t.  Just here their questions and listen to Dekker’s mention descriptions of their voices and how they make him feel.  Delicious.

Then comes his choice and date, Slade.  Its going well until both the reader and Dekker find out that Slade went back to his cheating ex, something that makes us all extremely unhappy.  Then the waffling begins.  Will Slade go back permanently or won’t he?  Will Dekker will out or won’t he?  Dekker is such a terrific character that its a bit of a no brainer here.  He’s charming, outgoing, owns his own Adult Toy Business.  Yes, he’s a catch.  Plus he’s gorgeous.  Slade however is someone I wished had a little more…gumption or backbone or something.  I’m not sure what exactly. But the dithering here lasted a little too  long in several passages for me to be completely on Slade’s side.  This is without spoilers.

However, love is not without bumps and larger hurdles, and this author gave this couple their fill.  They survived them, and their romance and ending came together just as it should.  I got to see Dekker happy and his Slade and that’s all that counted in the end.

Did I enjoy this story? Absolutely.  I went to check to see if there were other stories about the secondary characters here because they were so entertaining and worth their own tales.  Did I find any? No, but I hope that means that this first time author is intending to bring more stories out, starting with this circle of friends I thoroughly adored.  I can’t wait to see what Kay Doherty writes next.

Cover art is vibrant and eye-catching although a little too generic for me for the storyline.

Excerpt

Stupid phone. Jordan told me to call him two weeks ago. Two weeks and I haven’t mustered the courage to call. How can I tell him I want him back in my life, but I have to rebuild my life first? How can I ask him to put his life on hold until then, when I don’t know if it will take days, months, or years?

I put down the phone and go to get my bike. Even if I change everything else in my life, I still need to get some exercise.

Thirty minutes later, I reach my destination. It’s a closed-down factory not far from the docks. The fence has a hole in it, right where my contact told me. I go through it and hide my bike behind a bush. The door is unlocked, as I’d expected. I enter and hear voices. And funny noises. I walk down the hall to the right, as instructed, and emerge in a wide warehouse space. Machines are rusting everywhere. Small ones are scattered around seemingly haphazardly, some no bigger than a small table and others the size of a car. The biggest ones, the size of small houses, are neatly aligned, occupying a whole side of the place. Some of the casings are missing, probably eaten by rust, revealing wheels and chains crisscrossing inside the beasts. A web of gangways had been built around and above them, probably to help maintain them. These are now rusting away, with some parts missing.

Standing on top of the nearest machine, a boy, who looks barely sixteen, sits gazing down at me.

He whistles and the place becomes quiet. From behind the machines, a dozen people appear. There are four girls, and two of the guys look to be older than me, though not by much. Most of them are wearing cargo pants and hoodies; a few have on shorts and T-shirts. The only thing missing is guns. With them, they would look like a gang.

A girl walks over to me. She’s short, with brown hair tied in a ponytail. She’s wearing a dirty white skintight top and a cap. “Matt?”

I nod. “Gaby, I suppose?”

We shake hands. She turns to the group. “This is Matt, the guy I told you about.”

A boy comes forward and scrutinizes me.

He turns to Gaby. “Are you sure he won’t cause us any problems?”

I can’t help smiling at the rebuke.

Gaby keeps a straight face. “He’s the one who busted those dirty cops three years ago. Trust me, he won’t be a problem.”

This wipes the smile off my face. I’d rather leave that feat in the past. However, it gets me a few awed stares from the others around us.

“Too bad he didn’t get rid of the clean ones, too,” the kid grumbles, walking back a few steps.

“Did you take me in because of that?” I ask Gaby.

She shakes her head. “No. Don’t worry about it. But the cops don’t appreciate what we do. They can sometimes cause us trouble. I told you about it. If you don’t like it, you can go away.”

I stifle a snort. “Trust me, I’ve done worse!”

Book Trailer

Excerpt

THE ALARM WAS ringing. Joel slammed it off before it could do any damage. Normally a captain’s work was never done and he would have a list of things he needed to check before he made it to the mess for breakfast. But the mining season was coming to a close. Quality minerals filled his cargo hold, and he wasn’t even going to need to haggle for a good price this time. The ship was running, the crew were optimistic, and the man asleep beside him had done things last night Joel wouldn’t have thought were possible.

Sean had been a regular feature in Joel’s quarters since the young doctor had gotten shot. Joel ran his fingers over Sean’s bare, milk-white torso, allowing the tips to skate around the fresh scarring on his stomach. The memories surrounding the injury were troubling, but from those dark days came something Joel had never expected. Him and Sean. It was still new; barely two weeks if he didn’t count the long period of sexual tension before they got together.

Never in all his years sailing Ariel did he think he would end up sharing his bed with one of his crew, and certainly not a male crew member. But the past weeks had been some of the most enjoyable he’d ever had. Sean was different from the other folks on the ship and back home. His gentle, compassionate nature was a contrast to Joel’s brash, hard-line approach, but both men cared passionately about the same things: the ship and the crew.

“Hey,” Sean said, glancing down at Joel’s wandering fingers.

“Morning.” Joel ran his thumb over Sean’s lips. The guy was so handsome it made Joel’s knees go weak. “Did I wake you?”

Sean shook his head, a sleepy smile on his face. “No. Or at least not in any way I object to.”

“You sleep deep in my room.”

“Your bed is a lot comfier than mine,” Sean said. He rolled over and draped an arm across Joel’s chest.

“And there I was thinking I had worn you out.”

“Oh, yeah, that too. What are you doing awake so early? You should be as tired as me.”

Joel smirked. “Stamina,” he said, planting a wet kiss on Sean’s face. “And I like to watch you sleep.”

“That’s not creepy.” Sean laughed and snuggled closer, awakening all kinds of sensations in Joel’s body.

Start reading the series with book one!

A Paul B Review: Wolf (Demon Elite 2) by April Kelley

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Wolf Demon EliteLiam O’Reilly has not heard from his brother Finn for a week.  This is unusual because the brothers do not go more than two days without speaking.  Fearing something is wrong, he confronts his mother and step-father Richard.  Liam never liked his step-father and dislikes his mother for putting up with his abuse of the family.  While talking with his parents, Liam learns that Richard has sent Finn to a gay conversion camp.  After threatening to call the police, Liam receives a video saying to go to a meeting if he wants to see his brother again.  The crap hits the fan at this meeting and results with Liam being arrested with no hope of release from the crooked cops that took him in.

Spenser Ross, known to everyone as Wolf, is an elite assassin for the team.  He has developed a soft spot for Finn O’Reilly after his team rescued him from sex traffickers.  He assures Finn that they are doing what they can to find Liam, whom no one has heard from since his encounter with Crash a month ago.  Following up on a lead, he finds he is a moment too late to rescues Liam from jail, but follows those who have come to move him.  He arrives at a warehouse being used by the sex traffickers.  When he saves Liam from being turned over to the man who had originally paid for Finn, he finds that Liam is just as feisty as Finn had described him.  The Irish red headed firecracker (Liam insists it is strawberry blond) at first resists going with his would be rescuer.  After all, he’s been screwed over by authority figures for the past month.  Only after being convinced that he helped rescue Finn and that Finn is safe does Liam begin to trust his hero.  Now all they have to do is get back to company headquarters with a department full of crooked cops along with Wolf’s ex-boss on their tail.

I found this second book in the Demon Elite series enjoyable.  It starts during the events of the first book Crash and explains how Liam got tied up in all this mess in the first place.  As with the first book, the attraction between protector and protected is almost instant.  However, the most important thing I am finding in this series is the sense of family that the team has.   Having Liam and Wolf hook up reinforces this with their relationship to Finn.  Wolf also has a brotherly relationship with the team’s young tech geek Germ.  It is Clair, the fifteen year old girl rescued along with Finn that really brings this point home.  She becomes Wolf’s foster daughter and the team’s little sister/niece.  It will be interesting to see how much further this family grows.

The cover art by Latrisha Waters depicts Wolf as I would figure him to be.  The cover shows a long haired Native American male in a white tee shirt with a leather jacket over it.  In the corner is the Demon Elite crest, which is tattooed on each member of the team.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Release Day Review: Stranger in Black by Devon Rhodes

Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5

Stranger in Black DSP CoverChristian wants to end his attraction to his cheating lover once and for all, so he enlists the help of his best friend, David, to carry off a charade at David’s firm’s masquerade ball. David’s coworker is Mira, the girl Carl is cheating with, and Chris is willing to dress like a Southern belle just so he can get a glimpse of the woman who stole his boyfriend’s heart.

He knows what Carl will be wearing. After all, he blew him while he was trying on his black costume, so he knows he won’t be hard to spot. When he does, he can’t resist one more unforgettable experience with Carl, so he drags him to an empty banquet room and kneels to give him a memorable blowjob. But the joke’s on him as he immediately realizes the gorgeous uncut cock before him doesn’t match Carl’s cut meat. Deciding to enjoy himself anyway, he lets the guy finish, and just as they are heading back to the lobby, he’s confronted by Mira.

He doesn’t know that Mira has overheard Carl talking to “Chris” on the phone and thinks he’s cheating on her. So when she makes a beeline for him and takes Chris to the Ladies Room, thinking he’s the woman Carl is cheating with, he’s shocked. But he’s even more shocked when he finds out Mira is Carl’s fiancé. Being a kind-hearted soul, he simply tells her that he’s already told Carl it’s over, but if Carl comes around again, he’ll reinforce it. He doesn’t tell her he’s a man.

I really enjoyed the comedy of errors that resulted from this switch and liked the way the author later allowed for a romance to develop with Jarrod, who was actually the one dressed as the stranger in black that night. There’s even a new romance ready for Mira once she eventually discovers the truth about Carl for herself. And there are further misunderstandings in store for both Christian and Jarrod, but there are also heartwarming romantic moments and the promise of a happy future.

This story was short, but packed with fun, romance, deception, redemption, and most importantly, it left me feeling happy. Considering the length of the story, I felt as if it was much longer because I found each of the five characters featured in the story to be believable and well-developed. I especially loved Christian, and I thought Jarrod was simply sex on legs! Speaking of… The sex scenes were just enough to whet the appetite for more. I’m going to miss this couple and that’s pretty unusual for a short book. Obviously, I recommend this to my fellow MM romance lovers, and I’m going to be seeking more from Devon Rhodes in the future.

The cover on this new edition by Anna Sikorska features a handsome, smiling man in black about to put on his mask—perfect for the story.

An Alisa Release Day Review: One Step Forward by Tia Fielding

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

One Step ForwardSam Becker, a horse whisperer, agrees to take one last job before retiring to his Texas ranch. It’s clear as soon as he meets the Taylor family in Kentucky that he’s in for a challenge. What he doesn’t expect is the way his own wounds reopen. He’s never really dealt with the suicide of his mentally ill wife, and he won’t be able to ignore that hurt forever.

Joshua Taylor and his horse, Calla, were a force to be reckoned with on the eventing circuit until an accident ended their careers. Most of the pain is on the inside, however, and Sam knows those injuries are the slowest to mend. Sam’s unique methods help Calla and, surprisingly, Josh, but he’s still lost without riding. Their feelings for each other come hard and fast, and Josh starts his first steps of recovery, but Sam needs to return to Texas eventually. Even if Josh is able to move past the accident, they’ll still have a long and difficult journey to make before they can be together.

This was a nice story.  Sam knows he is in for a challenge when he meets Calla and Josh.  They are both lost without the other, so in order to help one he must work with both.

Sam and Josh are both pulled to each other when they meet, but hold themselves apart until an injured dog causes them to live together.  As they grow closer to each other they discover they both have more healing to do before they can move forward together.  Their time apart will tell if they are meant to be.

This story is told from both Sam and Josh’s point of view, which helps to know what they characters are feeling.  This story is well written, but I had a hard time connecting with the characters.  Most of this story Sam and Josh were apart from each other and had the belief that if it is meant to be it will happen.  That is a mindset I have a hard time to connect to, but it seems to work with these characters.  I still enjoyed the story and ending, it’s just not what I usually go for.

Cover art by AngstyG is nice and works well for this story.

Nash Summers rarely has any idea what she’s doing. But when she likes to pretend, she pretends by writing stories at the pace of drying paint. As if that wasn’t exhilarating enough, Nash also enjoys absolute silence, general politeness, and waiting her turn in line.
