An Interview with Dakota Nye

Hello everyone. It’s good to be back at the Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words blog. Yesterday we had an interview with Brenden Wade and today it’s all about Dakota Nye. There was a bit of an argument between the characters about who should interview him. Brenden wanted to do it, but Dakota countered that it should be his new broadcasting partner. Then Felipe insisted it should be him, but Brenden won out in the end.

* * *

Dakota: “Welcome back everyone to another special edition of Geek Wars, where we’re interviewing some of the people who make comicon conventions a memorable success. And it looks like we’ve saved the best for last.”

Brenden raises an eyebrow and taps his pen on his clipboard. “Never let it be said that you are humble. Hello everyone, I’m Brenden, an occasional guest on the Geek Wars podcast, and Dakota Nye’s second half for what seems like forever. We’re going to go off script today because I’m sure a lot of you listeners would really love to get to know the man behind this show.”

Dakota: “Wait, what? What do you mean offscript?”

Brenden: “What flavor of ice cream are you? Really? That’s an example of your hard hitting questions?”

Dakota: “Hard hitting? Wait a damn minute, this is supposed to be light hearted fun not a grilling, Bren.”

Brenden with a grin. “Sweating already, huh? I love it. So, tell your listeners Dakota, what got you into podcasting and why Geek Wars?”

Dakota grumbling under his breath. “Well, I have opinions and podcasting seemed like the best way to air them. I’ve learned over the years we’ve been doing shows and reading comics that when you get two geeks who like the same thing and there’s going to be a disagreement somewhere. The more geeks, the more there are heated opinions and I love playing devil’s advocate so getting people on a show and directing their venting seemed like it would be a lot of fun.”

Brenden: “I must say you play devil’s advocate well and all joking aside, you work to present multiple opinions, not just your own, which is far better than what I would do.”

Dakota: “Wow, thanks.” He presses a fist to his heart. “You get me right here.”

Brenden narrowing his eyes. “Are you fucking with me?”

Dakota grins. “You tell me.”

Brenden shakes his head and leans back swiveling in his chair: “Many of you listeners don’t know, but Dakota went to college on a baseball scholarship and had dreams of the majors until an injury sidelined him. I can tell you from going to his games that he was good. What was your favorite position to play and why?”

Dakota glaring at Brenden: “This is a geek show. No one wants to hear about baseball.”

Brenden: “They want to hear about you. That’s the point of this, getting to know Dakota Nye, not just the geek but the man. You’ve touched on Theo’s loss of his parents and Trask’s drug abuse among other things, so let’s hear about something that shaped you.”

Dakota shaking his head. “Next time, I’m not going to go easy on you. Just wait. Okay, fine, shortstop, because I like to be in the middle of everything. I need action and that was the most demanding position. Getting injured sucked. It really fucking sucked and definitely had me wandering aimlessly for a bit, but I’m at a point now where it’s okay. I enjoy going to games. I enjoy playing softball in town. I have new loves that occupy my attention.” His smile turns wicked. “Don’t they, Bren?”

Brenden points the pen in his direction. “Behave yourself.”

Dakota snorts: “Not likely.”

Brenden: “If you could have one song that summed up your love life before us what would it be?”

Dakota: “Damn, you surprised me again. I was sure you were going to angle for a love song.”

Brenden: “I know your long standing views on such things, besides, I’m curious.”

Dakota: “Ex’s and Oh’s by Elle King.”

Brenden huffs out a breath. “That sounds about right. What do you say to those who don’t believe you can settle down and commit?”

Dakota: “I really don’t care what anyone else thinks. You have to live your own life. There’s only one person whose thoughts about that topic I care about and you’re sitting across from me. Like I said earlier, you are stuck with me.”

Brenden: “Excuse me a moment, I’m about to get sappy.” He captures Dakota’s hand and kisses his knuckles before Dakota snatches his hand away.

Dakota: “Jesus, Bren, not on the show. No more interviews for you.”

Brenden: “Okay, back to business, if you had to pick one all time favorite comic what would it be?”

Dakota runs his hands through his hair. “Damn, that’s a hard one. You’re killing me. If I had to pick one and I’m going to get you for this, Lady Death.

Brenden: “You always did enjoy the darker themes more than I did.”

Dakota: “Yeah, I was hooked from when she first appeared in Evil Ernie. I had a lot of angst back then and those comics just fit right where I was at. Right now I’m really enjoying Monstress by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda is an amazing artist.”

Brenden glances at his watch. “It looks like we’re running out of time so I’m going to wrap this up with one more question.”

Dakota: “Make it fun if you’re going off the list. You’ve already done the hard hitting so I don’t need to answer the ‘what fears keep you awake at night’ and you’ve already nixed the ice cream one which for the record would totally be Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked.”

Brenden: “No, you’re fully baked.”

Dakota: “I’m not the one who went on a bender that was you.”

Brenden straightens with a glare. “That was 100% your fault.”

Dakota: “Plausible deniability, my man, plausible deniability. You’d have a difficult time making that cause in a court of law.”

Brenden: “Okay, final question, your life, if you could do it all again, what would you change?”

Dakota’s eyes widen in surprise, then narrow thoughtfully. “Not a damn thing. It’s been a wild ride and I don’t want to get off. No regrets, Bren, I can’t live like that. Thank you for taking the time to grill me, but that’s all the time we have, until then, get your geek on.”

Blurb:

When best friends Brenden and Dakota launch the biggest comics and pop-culture convention of their careers, they finally realize what everyone around them already knows: they’ve been in love for years.

Now what are they going to do about it?

Meticulously organized Brenden Wade and easygoing Dakota Nye turned their love of geek culture into a business, running conventions all over the Chesapeake Bay area. Now the weight of their pasts is threatening not only their friendship but their dream. Brenden fears losing his foster family when his secrets come out, and though the last thing Dakota wants is to hurt his plus one, he doesn’t know if he’s capable of settling down.

One night of passion challenges both men’s preconceptions and forces them to evaluate what they want from the future. They’re both scared, and though they’ve always been able to figure out anything together, hearts are on the line. Will taking a chance on romance lead to a beautiful disaster, or just a disaster?

A MelanieM Review:Where the Night Reigns by Emilie Lucadamo

Rating: 3.25 stars out of 5

The barrier between worlds has shattered. Demons wreak havoc across Earth; the dead are rising from their graves; psychics and witches are vanishing without a trace. The fate of the world rests in the hands of the enigmatic Tresser Corporation, a company of demon soldiers… and a kindergarten teacher.

In other words, humanity’s odds aren’t looking great.

When hunter, David Tresser, pairs up with a High Demon, he knows he’s in over his head. Of course, there are worse positions to be in, like Henry, whose girlfriend hasn’t been seen since the demonic attacks began, or the psychic Cassandra, who has become a target of those very demons herself. As this motley crew teams up, trust is slow to be gained…but they really have no choice when the world around them is falling apart at the seams. In the midst of it all, Tresser finds himself curiously drawn to the demon he’s not even sure he can trust.

After an exorcism gone terribly wrong, the team is left with no choice. To save their worlds, and themselves, they’ll have to travel into the darkest part of Hell: the Pits of Gehenna, from which no one has ever returned.

To defeat the odds and preserve humanity, they’ll all have to work together.

This was one of those books where I definitely needed to pay closer attention to the author’s notes and tour warnings.  Usually I’m better at that.  But in this case I missed several important flags.  One the title has two formats, I only saw one.  It’s the second I wish I’d seen and paid attention too.  The one that indicated that it was the last story in a trilogy.  As in Where the Night Reigns (In the Darkness Book 3).  The other flag?  Please note that the story contains a death of a major character.

Nope missed that.

Because honestly, I would not have read this story.

And it all starts off so promisingly.  Even without knowing about any other novels (remember I didn’t know this was a trilogy),Emilie Lucadamo sets the universe and premise for the story and then dives right in.  It doesn’t take long to start connecting emotionally to the characters, especially as they start to form this odd band of fighters/family up against incredible odds sort of thing… about to ride into Hell itself.  I mean … there’s humor, pathos, and great fantastical action scenes.

And even some of our fav characters start to pair up, ridiculously, wonderfully so as we get to know them better and our brave and supernatural Scooby gang prepare to save everyone in the world even as the odds rise up against them.  I mean the author has done a mean job of getting us to the point that we are engaged with the story and all the characters.  The huge world ending battle comes and it doesn’t disappoint.  Because with what happens to everyone …well, these are special beings with otherworldly gifts…and scenarios that could happen.

Until the epilogue.  Which you just don’t believe.

It sent me searching for other stories and reviews.  Which is how I found out this was in fact the series finale, the third story of a trilogy.  There won’t be any sequel, no hoped for change. This is it.  Huh.  How depressing.  And no won’t be reading the other stories either.  What’s the point?

I know there are fans out there for this type of bittersweet sort of storytelling.  I’m just not one of them. If you are, then yes, I believe you will like Where the Night Reigns (In the Darkness Book 3) by Emilie Lucadamo, all three stories.  The characters in the preceding novels get their resolutions here.  So obviously their stories were cliffhangers.  Just a FYI.  If it hadn’t been for that ending, I probably would have rated it higher.  But that ending still rings in my mind so no.  Not happening.  I’m just not that sort of ending gal.

Cover art: Natasha Snow.  Dark and murky.  Turns out it perfect after all.

A MelanieM Review: The Hate You Drink by NR Walker

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Erik Keston, son of the Keston Real Estate empire, knows what it takes to be successful. Despite his inherent wealth, he holds his own. He works hard, he’s grounded, he’s brilliant. He’s also secretly in love with his best friend.

Monroe Wellman lost his parents three years ago and never grieved, never recovered. Inheriting the family company and wealth means nothing, and his spiral of self-destruction is widespread and spectacular. Dubbed Sydney’s bad boy, he spends more days drunk than sober, and the only person who’s stuck by him through it all is his best mate.

But when Monroe hits rock bottom, Erik gives him an ultimatum, and his entire world comes to a grinding halt. It’s not until the haze lifts that Monroe can truly see what he’s been searching for was never in the bottom of a bottle. It’s been by his side all along.

An 80,000-word friends-to-lovers story about fighting the demons within and trusting in the love that takes its place.

“Because when all you drink is hate, that’s all there is inside you.”

I really wish I could put down two ratings for this story, one for NR Walker’s superb portrait of an addict hitting bottom, and then going through rehabilitation and  reintegration into his relationships.  The other rating?  That would be for the romance.

The Hate You Drink by NR Walker is a tale of two addictions and the love of two men.  Both incredibly wealthy, longtime friends as were their families who live nearby each other. The death of Monroe Wellman’s parents shatters his life and sends him spiraling downward, the vehicle of his destruction alcohol.  Not that he recognizes just out of control  his drinking or his life has gotten.  Why?  Because his best friend is there, rescuing him, enabling him in his actions.  That would be Erik Keston, richer, taller, and hopelessly and secretly in love with Monroe.  His own personal addiction.

NR Walker brings us into the story at the point where Monroe is hitting bottom.  So everything good about his life, Erik, and his previous relationship and past childhood and upbringing is in the past.  All we see is the addiction, the lies and excuses and the effects it’s having on the people around him as well as Monroe.    It’s ugly, gritty, and authentic.  The pain Monroe is inflicting on everyone including Erik as well as himself is deep and widespread, although he blithely ignores it.

As it is with every addict, the story is all about Monroe.  What it will take to shake him up enough to get the help he so desperately requires, the acceptance that he is an addict, an alcoholic, and his long rehabilitation.  That’s most of the story.  That’s really this story.  And it’s a heartrending and disturbing one to read, especially if you know someone who is an alcoholic.  Because this will all strike you again as so very, very sad and true to life. The characters are true to life, layered and believable. This part of the story rates a 5 star rating.

Less successful for me is the romance here.  Erik has always loved Monroe, he is Erik’s personal addiction.  He, in fact, loses himself in taking care of Monroe during the worst of Monroe’s downward spiral.  We are told over and over that Monroe completes Erik, that prior to his parent’s death, Monroe was different.  That he took care of Erik, etc.  But we never get “glimpses” into that past relationship, into what made Erik love “that” Monroe.  The Monroe we see is the addicted, self centered, selfish alcoholic.  Even in rehab, you don’t quite see enough of that other Monroe to get the chemistry that should make this unique and soulmate sort of relationship work. So for me, the romance element is a 3 star or less.

However, the majority of this novel is so well written, so well researched and emotional, that it overpowers the lackluster romance and makes The Hate You Drink by NR Walker an impactful story and one I definitely recommend to readers.

Cover art works so well for the theme of the story and character.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to host J.P. Barnaby here today, answering questions and talking about her latest release with Rowan Speedwell, A Pocketful of Stardust.

Welcome, J.P.

A Q&A with author JP Barnaby

Hello! My name is JP Barnaby and I’m the author of Aaron, the Little Boy Lost series, and a few other novels in the M/M world. Today I’m here to answer a few questions in promotion of a great new book with Rowan Speedwell (Kindred Hearts, Finding Zach, Illumination). It’s the story of Noah who inherits his father’s failing bookstore and with the help of Henry, the ghost of the previous owner, learns about community as he attempts to save it.

So, here we go with our Q&A:

If you could imagine the best possible place for you to write, where would that be and why?

My husband and I take a cruise to the Caribbean each year to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I’d love to say that I sit on the deck, watching the waves under the sun and write my little heart out, but that just isn’t the case. The best place for me to write is on my couch, with my dog at my side and my husband at work. I have my notes spread all around me (I’m a paper girl, despite working in IT), a Diet Pepsi on the table, and maybe some pretzels in a bowl. I can’t listen to music with words, so I’ll put on a John Williams station and listen to soundtracks from Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Star Wars, and more. After a couple hours of sitting under a blanket, lap desk across my legs, I usually wake up and realize I’ve only written a couple thousand words.

Does research play a role in choosing which genre you write? Do you enjoy research or prefer making up your worlds and cultures?

The genre in which I write depends a lot on what I’m reading at the time. Prior to meeting my husband, I read a lot of romance (straight and gay). I liked thinking that a happy ending was possible. When I got my own, I started reading more in the suspense genre. I’m a big fan of Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child, Stephen King, Lee Child, and now Karen Rose and Sandra Brown. For me, Romantic Suspense is the best of both worlds.

As for settings, I prefer making up my own town in an area of the country. For example in this latest book, A Pocketful of Stardust, we wanted to make it a small down in the south, so we created our own town of Aster in Georgia. It’s situated on the western outskirts of Atlanta and has a great community vibe with that unique southern charm. I like to write places I’ve lived, or at least been, so I can get a feel for the atmosphere—is it fast-paced like Chicago or New York? Does it have a party vibe like New Orleans or Orlando? Now, I also need to be concerned with the size and structure of the local law enforcement.

Do you like HFN or HEA? And why?

I’m not really on one side of the fence or the other. I like what’s best for the story. If these are guys who have been friends a long time and they’ve become lovers, I can see a more HEA ending. But, if they’ve been thrown into the heat of passion by mad bombers, maybe a HFN is more appropriate. As long as the ending is emotionally satisfying, I’m on board.

What’s next for you as a writer?

To date, I’ve written mostly contemporary novels with an angsty edge, books where the main character is fighting his way through trauma. Currently, I’m working on my first romantic suspense. I’d like to channel that fear and anxiety into a different form of expression. I’ve been researching police procedure which has been fascinating. This weekend I’m going to be attending the Writer’s Police Academy (https://www.writerspoliceacademy.com/classes-available/) in Raleigh, North Carolina where I’ll learn fingerprinting, blood evidence collection, and interrogation techniques. I’ve also been reading Forensic books and working through what suspects and books will take readers from beginning to end. It’s more planning and strategy than I’ve done for books in the past, so I’m taking it slowly. My plan is to have it finished for the Writer’s Digest conference next year in New York.

Thank you for taking the time to hang out with me!

A Pocketful of Stardust by JP Barnaby & Rowan Speedwell

Noah Hitchens loves the New York City life he worked hard to build. But when his father dies and leaves him a bankrupt bookstore in their sleepy Georgia hometown, Noah knows he has to save it. Unfortunately, he doesn’t know anything about business. He finds unlikely help in Henry, the man who owned Stardust Books before his 1966 murder, and Kyle St. James, a shy but kind-hearted out-of-towner with a past almost as mysterious as Henry’s. Kyle came to Aster, Georgia, looking for redemption. On the run and out of hope, he’s just trying to get on with his life. Then he meets Noah, a ghost, and a big sloppy lab named Jake who redefine his idea of living. But his past is closing in, and when it finds him, they could lose everything.

Something’s waiting for Eli. Somebody’s watching his every move…

Eli is used to looking after himself. Single for longer than he’d care to admit, he doesn’t need a man for more than a hookup, not when he’s got his loyal dog, Zeus, by his side.

But one night changes the course of his life. He meets Dominic, an actual copper and not the stripper he thought his best friend had hired for his birthday. Unfortunately for Eli, after his night out celebrating, a gift awaits him at home—but not a pleasant one.

His birthday may be over, but the threats keep coming. Keep escalating. Keep hurting those close to him. Just how far will the monster behind them go? And how much will Eli lose before he can stop them?

Beth Laycock’s books are influenced by her time living overseas as well as the gritty, urban landscape of the north of England where she grew up.

She has been reading romance since she was old enough to tell herself that line every book lover does—just one more chapter.

As a teenager she attempted to write her first novel, and many more since then that are still gathering dust on her bookshelf. It wasn’t until she discovered the M/M genre that her muse showed up and refused to quit telling her stories about beautiful men finding love together. She hasn’t stopped scribbling them down since. Beth’s muse usually shows up when she is in the shower, is allergic to cleaning, rarely lets Beth watch TV, and insists she drinks copious amounts of coffee so she can turn caffeine into words.

When not writing or reading Beth can be found procrastinating on social media or being dragged around the English countryside by her dog.

Mason:

I’ve escaped a past that would have destroyed most men: used, abused and sold for sex from a young age by those who should have protected me, an unexpected moment of compassion from a stranger gives me a chance at a new life.

Though I’ve started over, my scars run deep; I’m an LGBTQ fantasy graphic novel writer and artist with a huge following, but I’m terrified of the world. When I discover that the stranger who saved me from a life of abuse is the same man who has finally awakened my body to desire, I realize the truth: Can I ever really be free if I’m still afraid of my past and the people who shattered me?

Lee:

Serving as a medic in the Middle East, I felt the life of my fiancée slip away under my hands and was powerless to stop it. Discharged with physical and emotional wounds I can’t heal, I go home to my crazy, geeky family and try to learn to live with the damage.

Pain and grief lead me to some acts I’m not proud of, including paying strangers for sex. I’m determined to keep it strictly business, no emotions involved, but when I discover that Mason Malone isn’t a high-end escort, but a battered young man forced into a life of pain and degradation, I’m frozen in indecision. Then the man with the raven curls and blue-gold eyes whispers “”Please…”” and the barriers I built around my heart shatter.

Years later, fate brings us back together. He has a new name and career, but I could never forget those eyes. Mason, unfortunately, doesn’t recognize me. Every day I find myself more and more drawn to him, but I’m terrified of what will happen when our secrets are discovered.

As both of our pasts threaten our future, can we find a path to redemption? Can love and forgiveness overcome soul-shattering pain? Or will the discovery of our shared past create a chasm too wide to bridge?

Warning: PTSD, major anxiety issues, and sexual abuse, including rape, the aftermath of child molestation, and human trafficking.

EXCERPT

“Well, who knew? All it took was a little murder to get him back,” I said, digging my fingers into my head, trying to get rid of the headache that was growing.

“It wasn’t murder, Lee,” Bishop insisted, his voice brooking no argument. “And you know it. You were saving that him. That’s what you do: defend the helpless, protect the innocent, just like you always swore to do. Like you always did for me.”

I looked up at him and shook my head, even if he wouldn’t acknowledge it, I knew it was different.

“It wasn’t the same, Bish. There was no ‘brotherly’ love involved,” I said wryly. “Just lust. I went there to use him, just like all the other men had.”

A Chaos Moondrawn Review:Fairground Attractions Series by L M Somerton

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

I read and liked the Investigating Love series by this author years ago, so I thought I would try these. This trilogy has one overarching storyline, so although each novella focuses on one couple, they have to be read in order and together for maximum enjoyment. Garth, Stevie, Adam, and Zach are friends from university who work at the local amusement park during the summer breaks. The conversation in the diner at the start of summer lets the reader know what they are in for as each character is described and labeled. The plot focuses on criminals using the park as a cover for their activities: something to further tie together these three stories of couples exploring their different kinks with a hurt/comfort trope for all. I didn’t rate the individual stories because the plot is the same and each reader will have their own preference on what type of sex scene and dynamic appeals to them. The BDSM scenes are all pretty steamy, even though I think they are only there for titillation rather than being truly moving. I also don’t think these are realistic representations of loving D/s relationships, just erotic romances with a bit of fun plot. There is a nudge nudge, wink wink quality since Criminal Minds and the Scooby gang are mentioned.

GHOST TRAIN

This one focuses on the goth of the group, Garth. He is assigned to work on the ghost train ride for the summer. Most of the details are not believable: Clem works as an investigator that helps the police so they just let Garth leave without questioning him after he discovers a dead body. This is rectified somewhat in book two and three. Clem and Garth drive straight into BDSM the next day, with bondage, when he has very little experience and it’s technically their first date. I appreciate that information is gleaned from actual conversations between the characters rather than info dumps. There are little details, like Garth getting hurt, that just don’t disappear–they stay consistently acknowledged. Garth is the bratty type of submissive for Clem, who likes the challenge and play.

MERRY GO ROUND

Stevie is the sweet and shy one in this group of friends, but still no pushover. He has been assigned to the carousel. His best friend, and crush, Adam, is working security at the park. Although one assumes they have been dancing around their attraction for quite awhile, they are virgins who jump into more without talking about it. Whereas the first couple were much more serious about the BDSM, this couple seem more like they are playing at it. This matches them both being inexperienced and is generally cute. Although they are the same age and the dynamics are not all there, Adam is more like a Daddy with no age play.

HELTER SKELTER

Zach has a crush on his former math professor Daniel, who has been dragged into the investigation since he is an expert on mathematical ciphers. He works with the police to decipher the codes the criminals are using. Now that Zach is no longer his student, he is ready to make his move. He is the strictest dom, needing a compliant sub. Again, they rush headlong into a masochistic relationship without any indication Zach would be into that until the first sex scene. There is some scary equipment use here with no discussion about anything. Zach’s father, who owns the park, has not been doing well with all the stress. It is the perfect handing over of the reins for Zach’s care as the police close in on the drug runners and the assassin Harlequin. When Clem and Daniel go to help the police, the three subs can’t resist going to see the conclusion of the investigation.

The epilogue ties up any loose plot strings and gives one more scene between Daniel and Zach. Even though there are several traumatic events in these books, (murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, threats of sexual assault, shooting, and stabbing), they all seem to be there as a reason to excuse the insta-love/lust. The BDSM is used to take everyone’s mind off the criminal investigation and fear. There is amazingly low angst in all three of these. All three couples are looking to the future as the four guys head back to college for their final year.

The cover art is by Erin Dameron-Hill. I love the covers, but they seem quite dark. While there are dark plot points, this is all a bit of fun, so I think some more amusement park colors could have signaled that. Each one highlights the submissive in that story; I think the models used match the characters well.

A MelanieM Audio Review: Burn (Witchbane #1.5) by Morgan Brice and Kale Williams (narrator)

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

One hundred years ago, a sheriff’s posse killed dark warlock Rhyfel Gremory, but his witch-disciples escaped, and their magic made them nearly immortal. To keep their power, each year one of the witch-disciples kills a descendant of one of the men in the posse, a twelve-year cycle that has cost dozens of lives, including that of Seth Tanner’s brother, Jesse.

Seth uncovers a cycle of ritual murders that feed the witch-disciples’ power, and he saves Evan Malone, one of the warlock’s potential victims. Neither Seth nor Evan expected to fall in love, but when the dust settles, they find themselves on the run and on the road together, heading toward Pittsburgh, on the trail of the next killer.

Seth wonders whether Evan will come to regret his choice to stay together, now that he’s living the reality of Seth’s nomadic life and the risks that come with it. He wants Evan to stay, but he’s afraid that Evan would be better off without him, living a normal life. Evan’s whole world has been upended, but there’s one thing he’s sure of, his love for Seth. Evan worries that he’s a liability, not yet able to hold his own in Seth’s rough-and-tumble world, but determined to do whatever necessary to have Seth’s back. On the way to face the next warlock, supernatural threats abound, forcing them to learn to fight as a team.

Fate and danger threw them together. But once the adrenaline fades, will love last?

Burn is a short follow-up story in the Witchbane series where Seth Tanner and Evan Malone are still adjusting not only to each other but recovering from the recents events from book one, Witchbane and before book two, Dark Rivers.  Their “partnership” is new, from the tentatively forming romance to the decision to carry on and find the rest of the  warlock’s witch disciples. And dispose of them.  So Burn is a story of uncertainty, adjustment, learning, and communication.  All while killing nasty supernatural and paranormal beasties.

It is most definitely NOT a standalone in any way shape or form.  Really wish they would stop doing that in blurbs and descriptions.  It’s a series, people, with world building and this is only an interim story. It most certainly rests on the shoulders of the rest one as any solid building block does.

So, if you’ve read Witchbane, this is a wonderful sequel and mirror into where the characters stood immediately after the events of that novel.  Not shockingly, they are having issues.  Not talking and it’s ready to combust.  As written by Morgan Brice and narrated by the most wonderful Kale Williams, this story flies by.  It’s action packed, the characters alive and full of torn emotions.  As they should be.  I was so caught up in the story that it was over before I knew it.  As I said it’s a short story and the audio reflects that.

Witchbane is just one of the many interconnected series that Brice has right now.  There’s Witchbane, Badlands, t and the the new one , Treasure Trail.  All with interconnected characters that appear in each others stories and series. If you read one or listen to one, you find yourself getting sucked, quite willingly, into the overall universe Brice is building.  Read one?  Nope, have to read them all.  Or listen to them.  Which I am finding equally addicting under the spell of Kale Williams.

Which means I am recommending Burn the audio to you all, after you listen to Witchbane of course.  That was a terrific audio too.  Now to wait for Dark Rivers to arrive in audio.  Be still my heart!

Cover art works for the characters and tone of the story.  Love it.

Blurb

When an international case involving a series of ritual murders lands in his lap, strait-laced and logical Agent Leon Armstrong is going to need some help.

Leon follows the trail to the opal-mining town of Coober Pedy, Australia, where he gets tangled up with the wild Russian mystic Sergei Menshikov. Despite his commitment to rationality, Leon discovers he isn’t immune to the way of the spirits, no matter how much he’d like to think so. When Sergei tells him he treads a predestined path, Leon’s world turns upside down.

Leon’s experiences in Coober Pedy will change his life forever, but can he hold out against Sergei and the spirits—who Sergei claims have chosen them for each other?

The Shaman of Kupa Piti.

Setup: Australian Federal Police agent Leon Armstrong enters Soda Bob’s pub to speak with the witness, Sergei Menshikov. The following is one of Leon’s ongoing lessons of the way of life in the mining town of Coober Pedy.

Excerpt

Someone yelled “Doris!” and every patron turned to look at the door and, with broad grins, began chanting “Dor-is, Dor-is, Dor-is.” There were a few heckles as well, with one man yelling out to ask whether there was a Doris Day available for some extracurricular activity.

Not understanding the jibe, Leon largely ignored it, but knowing it was a taunt of some sort, he smiled and gave a little nod as though bowing to his audience.

Glancing towards the bar, Leon met Sergei’s eyes. Sergei had twisted on his bar stool to watch their advance, a teasing eyebrow raised and a smirk on his lips. He turned back towards the bar.

When Charlie went to the left of Sergei and leaned on the bar, instead of moving to the other side of Charlie and using the big man as a buffer, Leon slipped in between the two. He wasn’t sure why.

The barman was about to speak when Sergei introduced them. Leon supposed it didn’t take a genius to guess they were here to see him.

“Soda Bob, you know local Doris, and this is federal Doris.” Sergei grinned.

“Doris?” Leon asked.

Soda Bob chuckled. “Did you ever watch A Country Practice?”

Leon gave it a moment’s thought and realised the pig in the TV show was named Doris. He turned to Sergei. “I guess that makes you Rasputin.”

Soda Bob’s brow drew down. “Wasn’t Rasputin mad?” he asked one of the patrons sitting to Sergei’s right.

“Mad as a meat axe,” the man with blinding white teeth confirmed.

Coober Pedy was relatively isolated, but was their knowledge of the outer world really that restricted? “He was a mad monk,” Leon offered.

The white-toothed man’s eyebrows shot up. “A monk? I didn’t know that.”

Leon glanced at Sergei who, seemingly ignoring the conversation, stared straight ahead, one hand loosely holding the stubby on the bar before him, the other grooming his beard.

“Nah, he wasn’t a monk.” The redhead who spoke had so many freckles they’d started joining up like overlaid dot-to-dot pages. He added uncertainly, “I don’t think.”

“I don’t know anything about him being a monk,” said Soda Bob, “but whoever gave Rasputin his blasting ticket should’ve been hauled over a bed of shit and left in the shade for the flies.”

His blasting ticket? What the fuck?

At that moment, Sergei turned and looked directly into Leon’s eyes, a smug eyebrow raised and a smile twitching on his lips as if to say, “Well, that went well for you, didn’t it?”

Given he was not in the habit of blushing, when the heat rushed to Leon’s face, it was like lava flowing through the blood vessels in his cheeks. Sergei’s hazel eyes pinned him to the spot like a bug to a board. Leon couldn’t look away, couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe. Sergei blinked, and the self-satisfied expression lightened to a teasing and playful gaze that was more captivating than the previous look had been paralysing.

Sergei turned his head away, but his eyes remained playfully on Leon until he was gazing out of their corners from beneath hooded lids. With another blink he looked ahead again.

“Yeah,” said White Teeth. “Tiny was lucky he wasn’t in his pit that day.”

Leon dragged his eyes from Sergei. What were they talking about? Oh yeah, Rasputin and his blasting ticket. Obviously the conversation had gotten away from him completely.

“The man was a menace with explosives,” Soda Bob assured Leon. “He blew up Norman’s washing machine.” He laughed. “It was said that if you wanted a pig to fly, you just had to leave it with Rasputin. He sent most things around him sky high sooner or later.”

Leon assumed Sergei’s soft chuckle was triggered by Soda Bob’s seemingly unintended pig pun.

“Lesson learned,” said Leon, acknowledging that he was the one receiving the education. “Rasputin was a crappy powder monkey.”

About the Author

A. Nybo has tried conventional methods (a psych degree and a GC in Forensic Mental Health) but far prefers the less conventional, such as the occasional barbecue in the rain, four-hundred-kilometre drives at 1:00 a.m. for chocolate, and multiple emergency naps in any given twenty-four-hour period.

Western Australian born, she has been spotted on the other side of the planet several times—usually by mosquitoes. She’s also discovered Amazonian mosquitoes love her just as much as they do in her home state.
