Review:  Jingle Stars (Shamans & Shifters Space Opera Book 4) by Jenny Schwartz

Rating: 4.75✨

Jingle Stars (Shamans & Shifters Space Opera Book 4) is a holiday themed book and a highly important part of the series narrative tapestry.  While it contains a lovely story that could be read simply as a Christmas gift by the author that’s really not it’s true worth. This book is a beautifully crafted piece of writing.

Its main character starts off with Ahab, is a mLa’an AI who’s a partner with Vulf and Jaya on the spaceship Orion.  The galactic political system is in the process of determining whether artificial intelligence is or can be considered “real beings “, and recognized as full citizens of Galaxy Proper.

This argument should hit home as we are currently in the midst of early stages of the exact same process. And robotics.

Ahab is piloting the Orion on a solo mission when Ahab picks up a distressing transmission. A letter to Santa from a young boy asking Santa to save a group of kids, where there shouldn’t be any.

What follows is a discourse on what it means to be a person. The questions that arise from multiple perspectives and sources. And finally, those answers that matter the most.

And yes, grab a box of tissues and have it handy.

This isn’t a fun or easy read. There’s children in horrifying situations, traumatic events in their backgrounds.  And all play huge roles in the story and series.

Jingle Stars (Shamans & Shifters Space Opera Book 4) by Jenny Schwartz  is an amazing read, capturing so many different perspectives and emotional moments. A fun lighthearted holiday story? No, but a great book that will make you think about families and love in all its faces.  At Christmas.

Highly recommended. Love this author and series.

When a starship decides to play Santa Claus…

Ahab is a mLa’an artificial intelligence embedded in the starship, Orion. The campaign for AIs to be recognized as full citizens of Galaxy Proper is within reach of its extraordinary goal. The only thing that could stop it now is if an AI did something foolish…like take a space station hostage to save eight orphaned children.

And this is the letter to Santa that starts it all:

Dear Santa

I don’t know if your reindeers work in space. But if you have room in your sleigh after you finish delivering presents to the lucky kids with parents and homes, can you come and get me and my friends? Please? We’ve been good. Well, we haven’t been really bad. We’re on Station Elphame, in the junkyard, and Zoe is sick. She’s bad sick. I think she’d be better on a planet. We don’t need presents. We just need a way out of here. Ollie tried to sneak onto a trampship…he died. Please, Santa, I don’t want any more of my friends to die.

Aiden.

Review: Shattered Earth (Shamans & Shifters Space Opera Book 3) by Jenny Schwartz

Rating: 4.5✨

I’ll be posting the review for Shattered Earth and the holiday novella, Jingle Stars, together because they are short and , shakes finger at Schwartz, only appear to be side stories from the overall series arc.

But having read the series finale, I can tell you that Schwartz makes every single character and storyline have impact and enormous implications going forward. Even if superficially, nothing in the stories seems to connect to the complex plot of starship shaman Jaya Romanov and her new mate partner, galactic bounty hunter and robot wolf shifter, Vulf Trent, headed to the Ceph Sector for research and exploration.

I love when an author never drops a thread, uses each character’s storyline and development further to make the series stronger and even more compelling by its finale.

Just saying keep it in mind when going through the next two novellas.

Shattered Earth features pirate captain Kohia Jekyll and healer shaman Nairo Bloodstone, important figures from Cosmic Catalyst.  Kohia is  Jaya’s cousin and Nairo grew up with Jaya in the Academy that raised them.

Shattered Earth is literally a transformative tale. Nairo is taking over from Jaya in working towards the solution where all the shifters have the ability to recover their animal form. Kohia, a Tiger shifter and one of the galaxy’s most powerful captains, is returning to Earth, a mission to find and see what happened to the prison Jaya and Vulf uncovered.

A short story that makes the most of its length.  Full of details about the magic, descriptions of a destroyed Earth, a horrifying mine turned prison, and newly forming relationships between shipmates. Including a Captain and Healer.

Yes, absolutely wanted a book twice as long but these two are now an integral component of the narrative. As are many others.

Loving the covers.  Highly recommended.

The scum of the galaxy are using Earth as a nuclear winter death camp. It outrages pirate captain Kohia Jekyll’s sense of justice. No one deserves to die agonizingly of radiation poisoning, especially not on the planet humanity had to evacuate seven generations ago. So Kohia intends to close the prison camp down. She didn’t count on an infuriating shaman healer hitching a ride aboard her starship.

Nairo Bloodstone isn’t going to Earth to be a hero. He learned the hard way that when you’re a healer, doing your best for people is never enough. One miracle leads them to demand another and another. Heroes die exhausted and alone, and the galaxy continues with billions of people still clamoring for a miracle-worker to save them. No, Nairo isn’t going to Earth to be a hero. He intends to change what it means to be human.

Shattered Earth is a stand-alone novella in the Shamans & Shifters Space Opera series.

Review: Definitely Dead (Happily Ever Afterlife Book 1) by Arden Steele

Rating: 3🌈

Definitely Dead (Happily Ever Afterlife Book 1) by Arden Steele is a first book in a new series in an established universe. The Blackhaven Manor and connected sequel Hunters Hollow series are both full of terrific paranormal stories and interesting fated mates romances.

With their crossover characters and established mythology/histories, they have a depth of character and storyline coming into the book that I thought was missing here.

Both the main characters weren’t really well developed, nor did their instant love/fated mates storyline have any chemistry.

My biggest issue out of a bunch of them is the opening scenes where a young girl is so desperate to see her deceased father that she uses dark uncontrollable magic in Sunne Tanaka’s public library and tragically ends them both.

It’s a very unexpected traumatic moment but does Sunne Tanaka act like it? No. He could be visiting an ice cream parlor with the same overall emotional energy of placid sweet potato niceness that he exhibits here.

Did I believe in his character? No. If Arden had said Sunne was experiencing shock from his death and that of the girl , that was one thing but no, this “cinnamon roll “ personality was it.

And his fated mate is an unpleasant, bitter living guard in the underworld that we get no real sense of.

Add to all the above, a third major character quickly telegraphs what his role is to be in the storyline. It’s easy to guess at.

So adding all these elements together meant that Definitely Dead (Happily Ever Afterlife Book 1) by Arden Steele was a book I breezed through with little connection with the characters or plot.

It’s ok but I doubt this is a series I will be following.

As a royal Guardian, Tyr Bergstrom is built for battle, not stillness. Not whatever this is. He followed his prince into the depths of the Underworld out of loyalty, but with no foes to vanquish and no lives to safeguard, he’s left questioning why he stays. It’s dark, cold, and each day blends into the next with monotonous sameness.

Until a spark of sunshine arrives in the Village of Lost Souls.

Sunne Tanaka died. Not ideal, but he’s had worse Mondays. While the afterlife isn’t anything like he expected—frankly, it’s a total scam—from the moment he meets Tyr, he can’t help but feel that he’s exactly where he belongs. He hasn’t decided if the shifter is his destiny or a beautiful disaster waiting to happen, but he knows one thing for certain. He’s not leaving the village without him.

But Tyr knows better than anyone that some lines aren’t meant to be crossed. He doesn’t know what waits beyond the dark waters of the River Acheron, but it’s the only condition of his stay in the Underworld. A rule he has never questioned…until another soul puts Sunne’s very existence at risk.

Now, he’s not just questioning.

Now, he’s prepared to take on the living, the dead, and Hades himself to bring his mate back and give them both a chance at a happily ever afterlife.

Review:  Cosmic Catalyst (Shamans & Shifters Space Opera Book 2) by Jenny Schwartz

Rating: 4.5✨

Cosmic Catalyst is an excellent sequel to Her Robot Wolf, picking up after the highly dramatic events in that story that saw Jaya saving the galactic empire, along with her mate Vulf and companions.

Cosmic Catalyst deals with the ramifications from that event, the reveal of previously unknown powers that Jaya has and the hope that Vulf’s robot wolf represents for the shifter worlds.

As they say no good deed goes unpunished. And so those who want to profit from this event and her powers circle around them.

It’s an exceedingly wild, exciting, and amazing read. It moves all the relationships and overall dynamics forward and develops the world building even better by giving the reader more information about the Meitj, the other races, and the processes behind what drove saving certain species.

And the romance between Jaya and Vulf enables the author to explore the shifter society and interlock it into an expanded family for Jaya.

Another fabulous story and it’s onto the next!

Review:  Her Robot Wolf (Shamans & Shifters Space Opera Book 1) by Jenny Schwartz

Rating:  4.5⭐️

Well here’s another series I’m totally addicted to and binging right through. After finding author Jenny Schwartz through her Stars Die novel, I started diving into her other books and found this series.

Shamans and Shifters is such an unusual and amazing series. A complete science fiction adventure series that deals with scientific based magic, paranormal creatures, fated mates, fantastical alien worlds and societies, found families and galactic political intrigue. And romance.

It’s well written, highly imaginative, fast paced, and has a character that has grabbed at  my heart and mind is the ship Orion’s IA Ahab. The ship belongs to a bounty hunter wolf shifter Vulf Trent who’s on a collision course with Jaya Romanov, a star ship shaman.

The storyline, which revolves around the hunt for a man named Evan, introduces the universe of the series, the background of the races and the science behind the magic involved. Or the beginning of the science.  More will be explored as the series expands into deeper details and greater understanding of the political landscape and mysteries happening.

It’s a fast paced , exciting story and leaves you immediately gravitating towards the next book. Which I did.

Loved everything about this.

Including the covers.  Highly recommended.

Jaya Romanov is an independent star ship shaman. She studies the energy flows of the universe and—for a price—will harness them to her employer’s purpose. Wormholes are a whole lot safer to travel when a shaman guides the jump.

Vulf Trent is a bounty hunter. It was that or join the family business, piracy, and Vulf is too much the lone wolf to tolerate the demands of a large pirate crew. Where his family enjoys the bonds of pack, he prefers the freedom of ranging the universe, alone. Seven generations ago, humanity evacuated Earth and the shifter clans’ ability to transform into their animal forms was one of the most terrible losses of that time. Now, the werewolves, werebears and other shifters are trapped in their human bodies and slowly losing the essence of their primal souls.

Jaya is determined to heal their torn transformational abilities, but Vulf doesn’t believe her. He didn’t kidnap her for her healing abilities.

Her Robot Wolf is a fabulous adventure in which rare, mystical science replaces magic, pirates are taught to respect lone women, the galaxy is imperiled —and perhaps, rescued—and a fated mate pair contemplate kicking Fate in the teeth. Have fun! Don’t forget to buy Galactic Insurance before leaving Earth! Space opera, paranormal romance and a galactic array of aliens, mysteries, startling revelations and breath-taking heroics.

Review:  Finlay (The Wild Edges Book 1) by Lark Taylor

Rating: 4.5🌈

I really enjoyed Finlay, it brought me back to much of the original elements and characters of this paranormal universe that I am invested in that started with the four sons of Lucifer in the Reckless Damned series.

In fact, we get to see several of the characters and couples from some of my favorite stories return here in important roles. A absolutely fantastic aspect of this story.

Finlay is a character who was introduced before in Danny’s story and we get a brief recap here.

Chester, the florist fleeing a damaging relationship, is a wonderful character as is the assistant who is equally tragic in his background and importance here, Reid. Reid is a heartbreaking character and he, along with pack member Evan get the next story.

However, this is Finlay and Chester’s journey to recovery and their HEA and it’s a wonderful story.  I was with them every step forward in trust and recovery from the hurt and pain of loss and damage that their past relationships has brought each of them.

Taylor wraps up this couple’s story and gives them a happy ending as well as sets up Evan (and Reid) for their book to come.

I can’t wait to read it. This is another winner in a universe of connected series that continues to grow and keep me invested in their lives and relationships.  Highly recommended!

Review: Carl’s Doomsday Scenario: Dungeon Crawler Carl Book 2 by Matt Dinniman

Rating: 4.75⭐️

“I want to try one of Miss Beatrice’s favorite drinks. ….What is it, Carl? She always says it’s her Kryptonite.”

 “A Dirty Shirley,” I said.

“Yeah, I want to try that one.”

“Cats don’t drink cocktails,” I said. “Cats don’t shoot lasers from their eyes, either, but here we are, Carl. Mama needs a night off.””

So we dive back into Carl’s Doomsday Scenario, the second book in Matt Dinniman’s wildly imaginative, incredibly violent , action packed series, Dungeon Crawler Carl.

Carl, Princess Donut, and their NPC handler, Mordecai, are at a bar/multi function area where they can gather supplies and information about their next level as well as prepare for their next moves against their opponents.

It’s another great thriller, a fast-paced game where all the RPG elements are set in motion, but Dinniman simultaneously evolves the character relationships between Carl, Donut, and even Mordecai, a NPC who’s character has hidden elements.  So the story has a murder mystery to solve revolving around dead prostitutes, there’s a deadly circus (naturally), and other wildly imaginative creatures, personalities and beasts to combat and meet on their way to the next level.

This is an absolutely brutal game and story. At each level, millions of humans are being lost to the game. And while Carl,Princess Donut, and Donut’s new pet velociraptor, Mongo, and some other new comers are intensely concerned about surviving whatever level they are on and the other combatants, occasionally the outside galactic gallery of watchers and owners interfaces with them in a manner that makes them realize exactly what they’re facing.

These stories are fast paced reads and the ending will flow through to the next book.

No romance, high action, adventure.

You don’t have to be a gamer to enjoy it, but if you are you’ll under it and all the elements immediately.

Highly recommended.

These are, book by book, the most incredible, on point illustrations for covers. Colors are popping, the characters are spot on! Amazing artwork!

Review:  Stars Die (Caldryn Parliament Book 1) by Jenny Schwartz

Rating: 4.5⭐️

Jenny Schwartz is a new author for me but after this book she’s immediately on my must read list. Stars Die, the first book in the Caldryn Parliament series, is a fabulous read.

The world building is layered and intriguing, yet so vivid and large that you can see how she will be exploring it further in the series. And even farther.

The characters themselves are incredibly complex. Each has their own histories that are only partially revealed here, multiple agendas, and completely diverse backgrounds.

This is magic, science fiction and realism all combined into a compelling narrative.

And Schwartz has beautifully crafted even more fascinating storylines that work together to create a fascinating tale of dynastic power, intrigue, galactic politics, mystery and chaos. All with an overlay of magic.

It begins with the incredible character of Vanda Kavanagh, whose powerful grandmother has recalled her from her duty on a frontier planet to become new Warden of Caldryn Parliament.

Such a simple sentence that is so powerful a statement of a woman’s heart and journey to her own path.  Vanda is an incredible character. And she is accompanied by a very special companion, Giddy.

Giddy is part of the murder mystery that Vanda sets out to solve, as part of her plan and as part of a larger underlying problem.

There’s an entire excellent cast of equally important and well defined characters. Many of which I expect to develop and expand as the series continues.

This is a complex, emotional, exciting novel. There’s a potential for a romance but it’s not a romance story. It’s a political thriller, albeit one that is a magical science fiction novel.

So highly recommended and I’m extremely excited for the next book to be released.

And can I say how much I love these covers?

Review:  The Haunted Hotel 2: The Legend of Lovers Hollow (Crawshanks Guide to Mischievous Spectres & Spirits) by Vawn Cassidy

Rating: 4🌈

The Legend of Lovers Hollow is a funny, ghostly tale, a veritable mansion full of characters that are entertaining, intriguing, hilarious, occasionally heartbreaking, especially if they are a young sad ghost, and offer a number of interesting relationship dynamics.

Ellis Sparks is trying his best to expand the haunted hotel’s entertainment for its guests and that now includes a play about the tragic triad of lovers from the mansion’s history, The Legend of Lovers Hollow . Only it’s bringing with it unexpected peril along with challenges in the performances.

The new guests themselves are an intriguing rowdy bunch, from a group of well-known ghost hunters to a anime artist and several married couples and a throuple. The Haunted House has never seemed busier or under more stress.

Morgan especially is struggling with his own issues and the hotel’s finances. This , alongside the problems of a lonely little ghost, feel the most grounded and relatable emotionally. In a very strange and otherwise paranormal world setting, amongst ghosts having their own issues, Morgan and sad little Artie make their own circle of connection and bond that made this story for me.

But the grandfather and his sarongs? Hilarious. And we get several great surprises in the visitors here.

My only wish was for a more definitive ending. It seems to just stop without any real resolution to the issues here.

The Haunted Hotel 2: The Legend of Lovers Hollow is a highly recommended and enjoyable paranormal romp! Poignant, hilarious and fully entertaining.

Great series.

Review:  The Past in the Present (Beyond the Veil Book 9) by KM Avery

Rating: 5🌈

The Past in the Present (Beyond the Veil Book 9) by KM Avery is an outstanding piece of work by Avery in a series full of great novels.

The Past in the Present, Beyond the Veil book 9, finishes Seth and Elliot’s journey and inter-series trilogy.

Seth Mays and Elliot Crane have slowly made themselves into a couple, with Seth just now moving into Elliot’s home on the reservation and Seth working on his firefighter credentials in Shawano, Wisconsin.

Then a shattering phone call from a Sheriff’s Office in Staunton, Virginia , involving his estranged parents, saying his mother has been murdered , and his father is missing, presumably dead.  Noah, Seth’s young brother has been held for questioning in connection with the deaths. The nightmare of Seth’s past is back and he’s got to go back to a place where he promised himself and Noah  he would never have to return. Home.

The Past in the Present is a haunting, complex, and deeply moving story. It’s dark, layered with the characters past, horrific damaged history, fully immersed in their current tumultuous lives and relationships, and folded into the twisted ways the Arcanavirus settled into certain parts of the country and communities.

It brings Seth and Elliott’s relationship into a more intimate and complete sense of balance between them, letting Elliott see firsthand what Seth (as well Noah) traumatic adolescent upbringing was like and what they endured before they escaped their father and family. It’s a horror story at times and the author’s note of trigger warnings at the beginning should be read.

This is also an excellent labyrinthine mystery about the current murder investigation, Seth’s family, wills, and an extreme religious sect. This aspect of The Past in the Present brings in our favorite elf agent, Val Hart (Elliot’s best friend) and his new FBI boss, Tiger shifter, Raj, who will figure in the next series group.

It’s both a psychological mystery and action horror thriller. A well thought out story of two individuals who have overcome their differences and fears to become a true couple and have a stronger relationship. And it’s one man’s story to work through his personal demons and struggles with self worth and find peace in himself and his own new life.

I can’t imagine a better story or journey for Seth than the one Avery had written here. It’s just that exceptional.

Each story often sends me back to reread a certain moment in the series that made me realize how amazing the characters and each element is.

And now to wait on Rayn’s voice. Highly recommended.

Everything was finally going well. I had a job I liked, a man I loved, and a future we were building together.

And then the past came back to haunt me—and now I have to go back to the house in Appalachia where my parents had made my childhood a living hell. Where Noah and I had been broken, over and over, as the people who were supposed to love and protect us tried to turn us into something we weren’t and would never be.

It was a place I’d never wanted to go again.

But I now I have to. Because the parents I never meant to speak to again are dead, and Noah’s fingerprints were found all over the kitchen.

I didn’t know why Noah went back, what had happened to my parents, or whether my psyche was going to make it through a trip back to middle-of-nowhere rural Virginia. Or my relationship. I’d finally managed to convince Elliot to give me a chance, and he was about to find out about a lot of skeletons in a very deep, very dark closet.
