Review:  Impulsive Connections (Elemental Bonds #2) by Marie Reynard

Rating: 4.5🌈

The second book in Marie Reynard’s excellent paranormal fated mate mystery series, Impulsive Connections is one of those stories that kept me up til the early morning hours. Then ended on a thrilling cliffhanger. I wasn’t expecting that.

Reynard has been building a superb paranormal mystery that borders on the horror for this series.  It’s a fated mate romance that has an overlying series plot about a disappearing shifters, shifter territories under siege by mysterious dark forces, and entire packs suffering or  sometimes failing from odd magical symptoms.

With each new book and couple (a mage/shifter fated mate storyline), more of the complex arc plot and its elements are revealed.

Reynard’s characterizations and plot lines are excellent. Both in terms of how the author builds the relationship between scholarly mage Liam Batiste and the extroverted romantic wolf shifter, Kade Mills, weaving series foundation knowledge and mystery elements into it while maintaining the core plot of a fated mate couple. Our attention is secured, our emotions engaged.

The author never fails to let her characters grow as the relationship develops, letting them reveal more of their inner lives and desires be communicated as the story progresses.  This is true for not just the main characters but the equally important side characters as well, like Aran, and the other mages and shifters.

Another well done aspect of the series and the story is the magical elements.  The various spells, the crafting abilities, and even the deep lore and research,  stressing the importance for resources, it’s all realistic and exciting.  It makes sense and grounds this magical world.

Liam and Kade’s relationship is one I absolutely connected with, while enjoying their friendships with other people, including the close knit group of mages that arrived to help the Mills pack with their dark spirits troubling their territory.

There’s a cliffhanger I hadn’t expected after the first book, and it’s a heartbreaking moment.  It’s times like this when I love having a fully finished series to read.

However, I’ll be waiting in mad anticipation for the third book to arrive and probably re-visiting this one to be ready!

I’m highly recommending this series and story for all lovers of the fated mate trope and paranormal romance novels. No mpreg.  There’s plenty of great suspense and magical battles to look forward to.

Read them in the order they are written for plot and character development.

Blurb

Ignited by accident, fueled by fate. Some bonds burn brighter than any flame.

Kade Mills has spent over a decade dreaming of his ideal meet-cute. Surely the universe wouldn’t toss the perfect mage at him while he’s a scarred shadow of his former flirtatious self, recovering from his last encounter with the malicious spirits haunting his pack’s territory.

Liam Batiste is a man of simple pleasures; a quiet room and a stack of books are all he needs to be happy. He’s only in Lost Creek to help his friend save the Mills pack from the unknown evil infesting their land, but everything changes when he and Kade are paired up to capture the supernatural threat.

After a run-in with a spirit leaves them entangled—physically and magically—they must learn to control the newfound power their unwanted connection grants them. As they struggle to resist the heady pull of their bond, they begin to realize it may hold the key to defeating the dark forces that are endangering far more than just Kade’s pack… and perhaps it’s not as unwelcome as they first thought.

Impulsive Connections is a steamy 149k M/M paranormal romance featuring a playboy wolf shifter, a nerdy mage, and friends who are trying their very best not to meddle. This simmering slow burn is perfect for readers who love reluctant mates, unintended bonds, forced proximity, unfortunate bed shortages, and knotting. While it guarantees a happy ending for its main couple, the overarching plot does contain cliffhangers, and the series should be read in order. Please look inside for content warnings. (This series does not contain mpreg.)

Review:  Two Thousand Shadows ( Kings of Chaos Book #4) by Jocelynn Drake

Rating: 5🌈

We’re at the penultimate book in Jocelynn Drake’s fantastic epic paranormal series of ancient Chinese vampires, terrifying Fae dynastic plots, realm invasions, dragons, fated mates , witches and paranormal beings of all sorts of magical mythology.

What a mesmerizing wild explosive fantasy romantic ride this series is. And with Two Thousand Shadows we get both answers to a series long puzzle and an agonizing cliffhanger to angst over until the finale is released.

Two Thousand Shadows has a lot of storylines and elements to it, particularly with Drake having to concentrate on pulling together the entire series dramatic plots and characters for huge battles and storyline climaxes that will resolve the majority of the series main crucial issues.

Does Drake pull it off? Absolutely!

With the addition of new characters, cat shifters with magical abilities that are slowly revealed throughout the narrative, and a new couple who are (already formed in the reader’s imagination) a more substantial force in both personalities and character growth.

Junjie, who’s a seer and warrior, has his own painful past revisited here through memories and conversations with his clan. The cat shifter is revealed to be Leo, the stray cat Junjie has been feeding a surprise that came at the end of the previous story.

Leo’s character and shifter background is rolled out as Leo decides what he wants to do with the clan and his affinity for Junjie. It’s interesting how Drake again is able to write Leo feelings and thoughts as a paranormal character with a different nature than a human being.  Leo’s story feels very different from anything else that has come from before, that includes the dragon, who also acts as it should.

What or who is delightfully written is an orphan cat shifter who acts as a bridge between Leo and the clan, especially Junjie, pulling Leo into the found family in a relatable manner.

When it comes to the all important details and climatic moments, Drake has the power of the many magical beings and surprisingly great twists to make them so satisfying.  Did I want more? Sure. But this is so complicated, so many elements and elaborate layers of storylines leading up the result that I probably wouldn’t be happy unless there was a couple more books.

These are fabulous characters and it’s hard to believe that with all their potential for growth and more importantly additional content, this is leading up to the end. Hopefully with a break, Drake will think about new stories.

There’s another story coming because as I said this ends on a cliffhanger. A unexpected twist.

Until that book drops, grab up this fantastic series. Read them in the order they were written and enjoy the journey into an incredible universe and amazing characters.

Love the covers, the concept. Fantastic.

That cat is a liar!

The “stray cat” Junjie has been feeding and cuddling for months is actually an extremely rare cat shifter.

Of course, Leo would have preferred to continue their arrangement of Junjie feeding him choice bits of fish and rubbing his belly, but he needs Junjie’s help and that means revealing his secret.

An orphaned kitten needs a home after the fae killed his parents, and Leo is the most irresponsible, feckless, lazy creature in existence.

In short, he’s a terrible choice for raising a two-year-old cat shifter.

No. The WORST choice.

Yet, even after the little boy is settled with Junjie and the rest of the Zhang clan, Leo can’t walk away.

There’s just something about that sweet, bashful vampire with the too-soft heart and sexy eyes. And that kid is stealing chunks of his heart, too.

The war with the fae is about to tear the world apart and an old dark shadow has fallen over the Zhang clan, threatening to destroy them all.

Leo must stay to protect his new family. Even if it means giving up all his secrets to the vampire who is steadily stealing away his heart.

Two Thousand Shadows is the fourth novel in the Kings of Chaos series. This book contains a gentle, shy vampire who will stop at nothing to protect those he loves, a shifter with a secret, a nosy family who wants all the spilled tea, other non-human surprises, snark, angst, magic, found family, brotherly bickering, chaos, cuddles, secrets, and an endless love.

Review:  Christmas Beau (Christmas Falls: Season 2 #6) by Amy Aislin

Rating: 4.5🌈

Amy Aislin is another terrific author whose ability to write people in thoughtful adult relationships has been a huge factor in why I love her stories so.  Christmas Beau features many of the wonderful Amy Aislin elements of look for in her books and make them a must read.

The characters are multifaceted, facing realistic challenges, dealing with them by communicating to each other, while still respecting their own emotional state or the history behind some of them.  This is grownup adult behavior being treated as such. And I love that in a story. No over the top drama but serious conversations about the challenges ahead or the obstacles currently being faced.

Aislin’s characters and narrative smacks of realism while still being hilariously funny at times. Yes, I was giggling so hard at how socially awkward single dad Scott Jersey becomes when faced with his son’s hockey coach, Hank Beaufort.

Hank is one of the four Beaufort brothers, but the only one who didn’t make it to the NHL, something his brothers tease him brutally for.  Now as he’s building up the hockey program for young players in Christmas Falls , he’s struggling with his plans for going forward. Hank, with the hockey history and surroundings, is a notable Aislin character.

Scott Jersey, single father, of a hockey playing 12 year old son, has his old problems.  He’s just been fired from his law firm, living on his savings, and seeking a new direction for himself. Plus crushing on his son’s coach.

Scott is both vulnerable, hilarious in his ineptitude when it comes to dealing with Hank, a realistic dad, and a good man. He’s the character a reader immediately relates to, along with his son.

There’s several other family components that add in complexity to the story, each being layered into the narrative in believable ways. And having the characters dealing with each one in ways that are equally satisfying.

I just loved this book. There’s no rush into an instant love. No immediate moving in together. Instead we get a couple that’s thoughtful, moving, and respectful of each other’s feelings and lives. Building a relationship that’s solid.

What a fantastic gift.

Highly recommend this book and author if you’re not already familiar with her.

Hank Beaufort’s life is a mess.

Oh, he looks like he has it all together, but the reality is that he’s freshly retired from an unimpressive minor hockey career, and the ink is barely dry on his equally unimpressive second divorce. Now he’s the hockey director at the community center in a small town that treats Christmas like Santa Claus is real, and he’s not sure his new career is any more impressive than the last. As the new guy in town, he’d be lonely as hell if it weren’t for his dogs.

The one spot of brightness?

Scott Jersey, the adorably awkward single dad who brings his son to practice every week.

Hank’s not interested in a new relationship so soon after the disaster of the last one, but when doggy play dates lead to real dates, will he be able to set aside his reservations to be someone’s Christmas beau after all?

Review:  Moody’s Grumpy Holiday by Lane Hayes

Rating: 4.5🌈

Lane Hayes has written a funny engaging holiday romance about a two completely opposite men, ones who aren’t looking for a relationship, who find in themselves a unexpected love.  In a Christmas Town during the holidays.

With Hayes’ gift for memorable, endearing characters and the ability to create realistic locations are fully illustrated in this book.  It’s everywhere in scenes the reader can easily visualize the citizens, the places, and the situations  with the characters as they develop in the relationship. Each house, that fabulous bookstore, even the baby goat comes alive.

But it’s the dialogue and heartwarming journey to a HEA for Moody, the town’s Christmas Scrooge, and Hudson, its newest arrival and cowboy, that’s the heart and spirit of this wonderful book.

I adore them and their romance. And highly recommend reading their story.

The geek, the cowboy, and a not-so-grumpy holiday…

Moody

Living in Christmas Town doesn’t make me a fan of the holidays. Quite the opposite. In fact, eleven months of the year, I’m perfectly happy running my bookstore in peace and quiet. Of course, that changes in December when it’s mistletoe madness and mayhem. Ugh.

But this year, there’s a new cowboy in town and it’s not as easy to grumble about…anything. I admit, Hudson is handsome and hunky, but everyone knows I’m not myself till January, so he’ll have to buzz off and charm someone else.

Bah humbug.

Hudson

Moving to California wasn’t in my plans. I could use the change of scenery, though, and Oak Ridge Ranch is a good investment. That’s not a sneaky way of saying I’m hiding from my past—no siree. I’m following a new path to a new town, that’s all.

And so far, so good. Except…my attraction to the nerdy bookstore owner is throwing me off my game.

Look, I’m not interested in anything other than a casual hookup. But Moody is a mystery, and I want to know more about the adorable geek with a sunny disposition who turns into a holiday grump every year.

For some reason, he feels like home away from home. December may be the last month of the year, but something tells me this is our beginning.

Moody’s Grumpy Holiday is an MM grumpy-sunshine, romantic comedy featuring an adorkable geek, a hunky cowboy, and a little seasonal magic.

Review: The Trouble With Trying to Bag a Blood Witch (Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees Book 5) by Jennifer Cody

Rating: 5🌈

Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees is one of my favorite unhinged series. Jennifer Cody’s fabulously eccentric characters and wildly imaginative

storylines that swing from the humorous to the horrifying to the absurd and adventurous and back are always captivating.

The Trouble With Trying to Bag a Blood Witch, the fifth book in the series, is another resounding hit.  With one twist after another popping up in the story, the reader is still firmly centered on the growing relationship between otherworldly finder Darcy Hellspinner and very chill human Elijah Penn as they face numerous challenges and overcome attacks from villains unknown.

It’s a wildly chaotic journey that’s well constructed, layered with strange creatures and beings, and goes to unexpected places that even our main characters didn’t anticipate.

I believe that there is one more book in the series. There’s a wedding that still needs to happen for Arlington Fox and Romily, our original couple. That should be utter joy and a great universal celebration of the most unhinged storylines and these fabulous zany characters.  I can’t wait.

I highly recommend this series and story. Read these in order, it does help. Great covers.

Elijah:

Imagine coming home from an extended stay in a foreign country to find a letter from a house sitter you didn’t hire warning you to get a protection order against your ex and informing you that you’re a terrible plant dad.

I mean, I am a terrible plant dad, and I probably should get a protection order against Stalker Steve, but that letter isn’t the weirdest thing to happen to me today. I think the teleporting alien baby who’s decided to make me their perch probably takes the prize for Weirdest Thing in Elijah Penn’s Life.

Fortunately, the baby’s parents hired a bounty hunter to bring me and my new buddy back. Unfortunately, Darcy Hellspinner might be the sexiest man I’ve ever met in real life, and if it isn’t clear from the fact I call my ex Stalker Steve, I have terrible taste in men. I have the sneaking suspicion that Darcy’s going to be my next big mistake, but that’s ok—I’m probably going to be his too.

The Trouble With Trying to Bag a Blood Witch is a 87k paranormal romance with a little bit of sci-fi mixed in, two MCs who think this is just an extended hook up, and a baby alien with impeccable timing. The Foxily family is growing again. It’s Darcy’s turn to bring in a mate, but he’s lodging an official complaint because this isn’t what he signed up for.

Review:  Seb & Ailin: Case of the Murderous Mistletoe  By Michele Notaro

Rating: 4.5🌈

Seb & Ailin: Case of the Murderous Mistletoe  By Michele Notaro is a wonderfully entertaining, well written holiday story in the author’s Ellwood/Brinnswick universe.

Full of characters and couples from Notaro’s multi-series world, it is helpful if the reader is familiar with the universe and its inhabitants so that the story isn’t overwhelming with its numerous elements and characters that just have small roles or mentions but are very important in the series/world.  With a well-packed magical storyline of 194 pages , there’s only so much background for the author to provide while also fully laying out the mysteries behind the murderous toys and Holiday trimmings that’s at the center of the story.

Notaro does a great job of folding in the amusing aspects of the story, along with the absurdity and the horror of the toys going terrifyingly bad.  As the narrative ramps up each element of the storyline, pulling the reader effortlessly into the drama and the mystery, it centers on this one couple and their relationship so perfectly that it makes this reader want to revisit their story all over again.

Seb & Ailin: Case of the Murderous Mistletoe  By Michele Notaro is a great addition to the Ellwood/Brinnswick universe stories and my holiday reading list.

Review:  The Firedancer (Black Cat Circus) by Rye Cox

Rating: 4🌈

The Firedancer is my first dive into Rye Cox’s Black Cat Circus series, a paranormal world of outcasts that travel through worlds finding their true loves.

The setup is simple, the author establishes the characters and fundamentals of the series early on in the book, so even if the reader, like myself is new to the series, we understand setting of the circus and the concept of the story.

Coal, a Vermillion Bird, a fire being of ancient Chinese mythology. But his full background is slightly hidden under Coal’s painful personal history as a half human/half Fire Bird and what that meant for him growing up. I do wish that Rye had further explored his fiery magical powers, especially with regard to the mark on his chest. While what the author achieved was intriguing, the potential for something stunning was very real.

The same occurred with the great character of Rhett.  Rhett is an engaging, warm, layered character. Of smaller stature, this human chef has the personality that invigorates each scene he appears in. From the food scenes to the awe in which he’s viewing the circus acts, we just connect to him. That includes the very realistic background that Cox has crafted for Rhett with a found father as a kid on his own.

The Ringmaster is suitably mysterious yet charming. The other circus performers/found family members are interesting and ones who will have stories of their own.

I enjoyed Rhett and Coal’s romantic journey together but as good as they are there’s so much potential for even more magical exploration of the fire that brings them together.  As well as the nice twist that comes at the end of the book. Really needed more of this too.

A definite recommendation. But a wider range or more detailed explanations would have made this exceptional.

Coal was drawn to the circus after being driven out of the only home he knew. He was the outcast, the half-blood that shouldn’t have survived the fire that burned inside him. At Black Cat Circus, he finds a family of people just like him, of those who accept him just the way he is. However, the scars that were buried deep in his heart keep him from letting anyone get too close. He is fire, and he’s afraid of once again losing control of the thing that makes up the very essence of himself.

Rhett never knew his parents or had a family. Having grown up in foster care, he’s determined to find a place he can finally call home. When he sees the ad looking for a chef for a certain traveling circus, he’s compelled to apply despite never once having left the little town he grew up in. What he doesn’t expect is to find friends shrouded in mystery, and a beautiful man who burns so brightly but tries to dampen his flames.

The two can’t resist the mutual attraction, but are terrified of what it means to want more. When playing with fire, they must be careful or risk getting burned.

The Firedancer is a paranormal MM romance that features light temperature play, size difference, hurt/comfort themes, and learning to be comfortable in one’s own skin. It is part of the Black Cat Circus multi-author series that features found family and a magical cast of characters. Each book can be read as a standalone but is better enjoyed as a series.

Review: SOS HOTEL: Your Final Resting Place by Adam Vex (Ariana Nash)

Rating: 5🌈+

Honestly only the promise of an equally warped, wonderfully dark new series has kept me from absolutely bewailing the ending of this series as it came to its fabulous finale.

Am I ready to say goodbye to the ancient incubus warrior, winged purple flamboyance himself, Zee? Or the magnificent vampire businessman, “Fancy Fangs” Victor? And, importantly ,their love, Adam Vex, “yes, sure I’m human”. No. No, I’m not. And not to Tom Collins, the murderous AI djinn bartender , and all the other otherworldly beings who have made an impact throughout the series are here now in the final showdown with the villain to save the world! And it’s everything I wanted it to be.

It’s sexy, sarcastic, explosive, funny, horrifying, over the top entertaining, emotional, and downright fabulous.  And I never wanted it to end.

Coats were flared, buildings destroyed, sex was had, prophecy’s fulfilled, and love wins.

Let me spare a moment to wipe away a tear in sheer joy and appreciation for this absolutely amazing and zany world and series.  I’ll probably need to go back and re-read this series and see what I missed in the final reading.

But seeing Adam, Vee, Victor, and the

SOS HOTEL as they were at the end of this book? So so satisfying. A grand finale.  I wish I could rate it higher.

A must read for all lovers of this author and genre. Don’t miss out on all the notes beforehand and afterwards. As usual.

Review: Under the Mistle-tome (a Christmas Falls story) by Sammi Cee

Rating: 4.5🌈

Under the Mistle-tome by Sammi Cee is the third book I’ve read in the multi-author Christmas Falls series and it’s my favorite one so far.

A best friends to lovers story, here the best friend from childhood is returning to Christmas Falls after a long separation and with an adorable daughter in tow.

Trevor’s cold family life that he and his young daughter, Holly, are leaving behind is sharply contrasted with the warmth and joyful welcome that awaits them at the familiar bookstore run by Trey and his heart warming family. Cee makes that bookstore, Season’s Readings, with its fun kids story times run by Eddie, hustling crowds of book loving people, and general air of welcoming spirit a place of reality for the reader. It grounds us and all the characters immediately.

It’s a place where the men can start their own journey back together as Trevor’s adorable little Holly adjusts to her new home, stealing hearts and scenes left and right.

Through Holly, the reader gets to view Christmas Falls as we should see it! Christmas Falls parades, the magical world of the town spreads out before Trevor and Holly as she sees it for the first time and Trevor remembers why he loves it so and needed to return. And Trey, see his town again and appreciates how special it is again.

This entire story is just a reminder of the importance of the community and spirit of the holiday season, whether it’s a large town celebration or a family coming together, home again in heart and place. Such a joy to read in every aspect.

If I had a quibble, it was the quick resolution for the manner Trevor was treated, and his daughter was treated by his parents . There was a later disclosure about her behavior but it did nothing to assuage the lack of full support from his father or the lack of apologies from either for what was really long term damaging behavior. If this was going to be an important element, then it needs just as thorough and satisfying ending.

Otherwise, a fantastic holiday story, with beautifully rendered scenes and great characters. I love it.

Review:  12 Dates of Christmas (Christmas Falls: Season 2 #3) by Brigham Vaughn

Rating: 4.5🌈

Brigham Vaughn brings us another terrific heartwarming holiday romance with 12 Dates of Christmas, a novel in the multi-author series, Christmas Falls: Season 2.

One of the best holiday series, now in its second season, the setting is a town dedicated exclusively to Christmas, 12 months of the year, Christmas Falls.  Complete with a charming map of the town, outlying areas (few as they are), and the Christmas shops with the holiday punny names that we’ve become so familiar through so many stories and characters.

Widower Nick Morgan, who’s been mentioned in previous books, is Christmas Falls matchmaker.  He wants everyone to experience the love and joy he had in his marriage with his wife before she died, so he’s made it his mission to help others find their match.

But to take that business online he needs a better website. And someone who has the ability to create one. That’s website developer Leo Fenner (best friend to Hayden ) who has recently relocated to Christmas Falls having fallen under its charms and wanting a change.

These are two completely sweet people that Vaughn has created for the story and watching each of them grow together, working with each other, and through a couple of different struggles is low key lovely and heartwarming.

The reader, if they are following along in the series, may recognize some scenes from other stories but now from their perspectives. A element I really enjoy.

And the aspect of Nick’s story, from realizing that he has already been bisexual to the journey of acceptance that’s it’s time to move forward past grief to a new chapter and relationship is believable. Even his missteps and fear all feels true to heart.

As does the gentle reminders and ways Leo both protects himself yet leaves the path open for them both.

Did I want a little more of them at the end? Certainly but 12 Dates of Christmas (Christmas Falls: Season 2 #3) by Brigham Vaughn is a holiday heartwarmer.  Christmas Falls lights up my holiday reading and this is just one more reason why.

Another win!

Leo Fenner needs a Christmas miracle …

Charmed by the small town, and weary of the big city dating scene, Leo moved to Christmas Falls in hopes of finding love like his college friend, Hayden.

Nick Morgan had the love of his life and lost her, but is determined to help others find their happily ever after with his matchmaking service.

His website needs work though, and Leo is just the man for the job.

The web developer signs up for Nick’s matchmaking service to get a feel for what the process is like, all while secretly hoping it’ll bring him the love of his dreams.

But as Nick and Leo work together, the sparks between them are impossible to ignore.

Too bad there’s a few little problems.

For one, Nick’s never fallen for a man before. And, oh yeah—those dates he’s planning for Leo? They’re supposed to be with other guys …
