A delightful collection of short stories that pick up the lives of various characters from the books and series of Lily Morton. I quickly finished this, looking for my favorite coupleās stories first, then going back through the others.
A absolutely joy to revisit each one of these characters and see them once again, in various places in their relationships. Moving, funny and always beautifully written.
A must read for lovers of the books and author.
āThese short stories catch up with the men in my books after their stories have ended. Therefore, there are a lot of spoilers. Please donāt read the shorts until youāve read the original books.ā-Lily Morton
Drawn together for the first time, this is a collection of Lilyās short stories about some of the much-loved men from her books. Follow them through meeting the parents, a disastrous camping weekend, and a rather eventful school trip.
It includes stories previously written for her website, newsletter, and readersā group, along with five brand new and exclusive short storiesāThe School Trip, A Honeysuckle Interlude, A Family Affair, Beeās Amsterdam, and Gone Camping.
In a recent group of highly anticipated and majorly media-hyped romance releases, Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry is one that lives up to its promise and excitement.
Iām unfamiliar with the author and wary or is it weary now of the various books being āsuper pushed , highly gushed about ā on many media platforms, especially prior to release.
These books are often compared to other books and series that are well established , very well written and already have enormous fan support, rightly or wrongly. Maybe the soon to be published books fit in the genre, maybe they donāt. But pre-slotting them into a category does the book or author any favors.
Rant over. Onto this amazing book.
Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry does a fantastic job of capturing a unique world of fantasy and horror, of Kingdoms and magical beasts, of princesses marrying to maintain a balance thatās not exactly what it seems.
And princes to die for.
The only thing Iām upset about is I donāt have the sequel in my hands already.
Devney Perryās world building is extraordinary, from the perilous waters their ships sail over and the creatures that lurk underneath to the realistic, harsh and beautiful nature of the Kingdom most of the novel takes place in.
Perryās descriptions and locations are visually stunning, imaginative and beautifully written. They capture our imagination and its people our hearts moment by moment, as Odessa learns more about her new life and the people around her.
The characters, especially the main character of Odessa, is engaging and wonderfully layered, leaving her fully aware of her struggles and able to develop her strengths as she grows more aware of the challenges and realities of her situation.
Less said due to spoilers about the male characters the better as they figure greatly in the narrative plot elements and twists. Iām sure many readers will see the surprises coming but itās still a very real moment for the story and characters. And worked through with a terrific backstory.
Is this āspicyā romance? Thatās a term I feel is being used now for a wide range of sexual content in a romance novel, including some I find offensive like SA. This story is a long novel that features a true slow burn romance with a kiss and finally some sexual romance towards the end. Thatās it.
Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry has left plenty of room for the magical elements and mythology to expand with the next novel. I canāt wait to see what the author has planned for the characters and their journey.
Highly recommended!

But that changed the fateful day I stepped into my fatherās throne room. The day a legendary monster hunter sailed to our shores. The day a prince ruined my life.

Everyone wants me to be something Iām notāa queen, a spy, a sacrifice.

Demon (Mystic Guardians Book 3) by Rinda Elliott is a series that started out strong but has wobbled narratively with each following story.
Details and drama surrounding this couple isnāt clearly defined or well established. And unfortunately the ending is very unsatisfactory.
Which is sad because Demon has the potential to be a good paranormal romance and this couple is extremely engaging.
This series and novel is a fated mates, instant love romance/relationship between a human being who can see preternatural beings and the other beings whoāre their fated mate.
Lonnie Russell, a professor of writing, has a scary stalker so his sister, a successful author, has hired the otherworldly agency to supply a bodyguard for him. That bodyguard happens to be the demon, Demon Callan Ambrose, whoās desperate for a mate.
Cute aspects to the story and relationship? Lonnie collects anime figurines, including demons, from his favorite shows and comics. And introduces Callan to anime, a great element which was underutilized.
They were sweet and really had the potential for a better romance here. The author gave Lonnieās character some serious issues that instead of being addressed were lightly touched on. He has ADHD admittedly, body image issues (although Callan finds him sexy), and a writerās block that has been around for a while. Then a stalker who has been watching him 24/7 that he didnāt take seriously at first so more than just body image issues. None of this is actually well defined or explored in the storyline or the relationship.
If as a author you donāt have that much page time to authentically talk about the serious elements that you have used to help create a character, then perhaps it better not to use them in this book at all. Save it for a longer novel and different character.
The same lack of development goes for the dramatic element of the story. It comes out of nowhere. No foundation for it.
Spoiler.
But as the villain is, even excluding the main aspect of his character, highly obsessive and delusional, to end this with him able to recover , remaining just as cemented in his delusion, and ready to go forward makes zero sense.
The excuses the head of the agency makes are just as bad. It throws the reader out of any plausible connection thatās remaining to the story and this scenario.
I doubt Iām going forward with any further books in the series.
Too bad because thereās some good things here but nothing is carried through to the any of its full potential.
Demon Callan Ambrose wants a soulmate more than anything but is sure heāll never find his. One of his brothers is mated and soulmates are rare, so the odds are against him. Then he takes a job protecting Lonnie Russell, a creative writing professor who is quirky, and sweet, and justā¦perfect. But someone is terrorizing Lonnie with threatening notes.
Lonnie has always been able to see the preternaturals in the world and heās always been fascinated with them. Especially demons. He even has an entire room dedicated to them. So heās thrilled when his new bodyguard turns out to be one. Callan is big and gruff, his grumpy exterior a mask for someone whoās really a cuddle monster. And the gifts? He sure would like to know what thatās all about.
What started out as vague threats quickly escalates and when they realize what theyāre up against, Callan is determined to keep his newfound treasure safe.
Demon is a long MM paranormal romance novella with a grumpy/sunshine pairing, traditional demon courting, and plenty of steam. Itās the third in the Mystic Guardians series, but can be read as a standalone
I waited until the last book in the series was released to read Half Dead, the penultimate book in the series. That way I could happily breeze right through both books. Or so I thought. Best laid plans.
Because I keep forgetting that Chase can break my heart, that when dealing with death, demons, ghosts, and the underworld, things happen that are traumatic and Iāll need a break before I can finally finish the books.
And yes, this ends on a cliffhanger even.
Still, after I finished sobbing in parts, admiring the sheer artistry of Annabel Chaseās work and plotting, that even a new character that made a minuscule appearance in, yes, an incredible scene, left me absolutely bereft, I was absorbed in Loreleiās story. From a totally different angle of an outsider, now Lorelei is firmly connected to the people and paranormal beings of Fairhaven, characters weāve gotten to know and care deeply about.
Kane is a huge part of this narrative, and as his and Loreleiās relationship has evolved, so does any threat to him become a threat to her as well as the town.
The Corporation continues to expand its presence and entityās evil impact. Itās truly a fascinating and awful villain.
Half Dead (Crossroads Queen Book 8) by Annabel Chase is a fantastic book. Only the cliffhanger aspect caused it to miss a 5-star rating. This hurt my heart, made me realize how amazing the storytelling is, and incredible the characters.
Time for the finale.
Highly recommended!
Great cover art and design.
Cover by Trif Designs, which has changed to reflect the fact that the word has gotten out that Lorelei Clay is a demigod. So great touch with that head halo/crown addition. Love the castle in the background.
Lorelei Clay wants to play offense for a change. Sheās tired of hiding from the past she didnāt even know she had. With a promising relationship and new friends in a small town she loves, Lorelei wants to be free to live life on her terms, without the threat of death or capture hanging over her.
Kane Sullivan hasnāt exactly been hiding from his pastāmore like he moved without a forwarding address. Unfortunately for him, the boss he tried to overthrow never gave up the search.
And now the former prince of hell has been found.
Kane wants to do whatever it takes to keep his problems from endangering his found family. He knows better than anyone what Lucifer is capable of.
Lorelei is willing to do whatever it takes to protect the demon she loves, but if she canāt convince him to get in the game, they risk losing everything theyāve built together.
When the supreme demon finally makes his move, Lorelei realizes there are some nightmares that even she canāt control.
You donāt want to miss Half Dead, the penultimate book in the Crossroads Queen urban fantasy series.
Tavia Lark is an author I enjoy reading, so I immediately grabbed up this paranormal romance. Itās got vampires in trouble, lone wolf werewolves in need of mates and stability, and an old fashioned murder mystery that plays out along with the romance.
The 400 ish year old vampire,Simon, is an engaging character with a new magical ability that would be fun if better explored. And werewolf bodyguard, Cody, quickly became my favorite character of the story.
A few lines fed the reader his background, and the reasoning behind his instability as a werewolf also had a brevity of explanation in this narrative. The majority of the story was turned over to the mystery of the threats to Simon, the perpetrators behind the attacks, and the growing relationship between Simon and Cody.
For me , their dynamic and personal relationship made the story. They had chemistry as a couple. And Lark gave them each personal stakes to make a relationship problematic enough going forward for them if they wanted it too.
The world building was non existent. Had no real idea of what the other storylines meant or referenced, which removed any impact that they could have had on the plot.
If this book fits within a known universe, itās not set down here.
So the best part of this is the main couple and their relationship. Itās a chosen mates, forced proximity vampire/werewolf relationship and an enjoyable one.
I recommend it for everyone who likes the author and this trope.
Adapted from a novella originally published as The Vampireās Werewolf Bodyguard by Liv Rider.
Simon doesnāt want protection. Especially not from a werewolf.
Too bad the reclusive vampire doesnāt have a choice. Simon barely survived an assassinās strike, and he isnāt safe yet. The attack left him weak and vulnerable, which is why his meddling sire hires him a bodyguard.
A big, burly werewolf bodyguard.
Codyās instincts make him a formidable guardāif he can control his wolf. Living without a pack or mate makes him unstable. Dangerous. After accidentally shifting on his previous assignment, he has one chance to prove himself:
Protecting a bratty vampire who does not want his protection.
Keeping things professional is Codyās only hope. Simon may have four centuriesā worth of defensive habits, but Cody can handle difficult clients. Except as Cody digs up the hurt behind Simonās prickly exterior, and Simon starts to enjoy being cared forā¦
Staying professional might be impossible. Just like controlling Codyās wolf.
The Vampireās Werewolf Bodyguard is an MM paranormal romance with forced proximity, chosen mates, and bickering to lovers.
And Iām out. Honestly I tried so hard to like this series and main character because it had so much potential, but in the end, the story, plotting, and overall poor character development just sunk it.
Iāll take it issue by issue, starting with the least interesting part , that of the plot elements and total story reveal early on.
I guessed at how all the various elements of this story came together to point to the main villain and his nefarious plan at around the 45 percentage point. But the author herself gets several characters to actually tell a small group the exact details of the storyline, the mystery, the villain, at the halfway point. So itās a done deal. Just a matter of bringing him down.
For the rest of the book. Mystery solved.
Next. The biggest problem is the characters. Most are of the cardboard type. One dimensional. No layers , no history and very little details or any real reason to care for them. Thatās the majority of the cast. One gets hurt or killed. Itās not a big deal because they are, for the most part, underwhelming and interchangeable. Only a few stick out, and thatās due to how often they appear throughout the book and their names. Like Dog, the werewolf bartender. But thatās all you really know about him.
The main character, Charley, is problematic is multiple ways. For me sheās a prime example of a TSTL character. Sheās constantly doing things that are highly āstupidā , that is the word used in the book, in that both she, her circle of friends, and the reader know are traps, running into scenes where sheās outnumbered, or the villains or baddies are waiting for her. Sheās either told herself itās a ādumb or stupidā idea, her friends or even frenemies have told her itās a bad idea. So, over and over, she goes through and does it. And yes, gets hurt , needs to be saved, and often gets others hurt too. Watch her repeat this pattern while asking yourself why you are still reading this book.
TSTL. Extremely frustrating to read about. And gives me little reason to invest in the character.
The magic and her lack of training, the nasty coven and that entire aspect of the story is full of flags and issues. But Iāll table those because the main character has so many herself.
Finally the romance. We donāt have much of any relationship history or romance development between Charley and the vampire Samuel. But instantly they are in love, committed and Dog is so happy for them. After a few minutes in the alley and a couple of times where he steps in and helps her out? Where is the relationship dynamic? Even instant love romances have more of a connection than this one does.
Add everything above and I barely got through the book. It was a struggle. So Iām definitely not going forward .
If youāre a fan of the author, then you might want to consider reading this.
Welcome to Crimson, Georgia. Iām Charley Underwoodāwitch, bar owner, and accidental demon hunter.
Crimson isnāt a regular town. With vampires, shifters, and humans living side by side, tensions always run high. I try to keep the peace, and most of the time nobody gets hurt. Most of the time.
Right now, Crimson is one bite away from all-out chaos.
A dangerous new wolf is stirring up trouble. A sexy vampire is on the hunt, with a gun full of sunlight bullets. And thugs from Atlanta are threatening my friends.
As if that wasnāt enough, my magic is running wild. One second itās throwing bad guys through windows, the next it fizzles out to nothing. Thereās only one way to get it under controlāby taking lessons from Crimsonās terrifying old-school coven of witches.
I need to get a handle on it fast. Way out in the woods, someone is attacking young women, leaving them bitten and bloody. Is it a stranger or one of our own?
When police pin the attacks on one of my bartenders, itās clear that none of this is random. Someone is coming after me and the people I love.
Iāll do anything to protect my crew. Even strike a deal with a vicious old enemy.
Because when I see what Iām fighting against, itās clear I need all the help I can get.
Icy Reception is another grand slam adventure in the epic fantasy series of the SOS HOTEL characters and their journey through life, horrifying scenarios, looking for their HEA or whatever suits them.
Thereās so much to quote, hilarious scenes and fabulous moments here. LARPing in the extreme, which is saying something.
Iāll never think about conciergeās and desk bells āding, ding, ding ding, dingā without a certain delightfully chaotic demon in mind. Heās needs one, yes, he does.
I find this hilarious, absolutely entertaining and need the finale in the worst bestest possible way.
Love this world and characters.

Wait. You donāt know? F*ck, me neither. I guess weāre gonna find out.

“Thanks for your concern, but I don’t need your protection. I have a mystical cat, an unprincipled gnome with a violent streak, and I have my magic.” Betty Lennox
In my quest for writers and books with new approaches to their main characters and the tropes I enjoy reading, this is a great new find that I canāt wait to share.
Although the author is a popular writer, C.P. Rider is new to me. The Smokethorn Paranormals is the first series Iāve read by Rider and all its characters and elements have struck a chord with me.
Starting with the main character of Betty Lennox, a grief torn earth witch, living in a 19 ft Airstream trailer in the paranormal seniors’ trailer park she inherited from her mother. Bettyās curvaceous, dark-haired reflective of her Mexican heritage, and trying to leave her desert hometown of Smokethorn, California. But she has to honor her motherās wishes and legacy and find the right earth witch to buy the property.
From the paranormal senior citizens in living in the trailer park, beautifully realized and hilariously depicted in a number of scenes, to the desert area around her, the location feels fresh and authentic. A vibrant new world for a series and group of extraordinary characters. That extends to the town itself.
Riderās Betty Lennox is a woman so consumed by her loss that she doesnāt even realize how itās caused her to become stuck in life, a kind of limbo. Unable to move forward however she tries. Itās a powerful portrayal of love, loss and grief. And magic.
For itās magic or its absence that a clear sign of loss and grief.
Bettyās friends, one of whom is a retired necromancer in her eighties, Ada,
āThanks for your concern, but I donāt need your protection. I have a mystical cat, an unprincipled gnome with a violent streak, and I have my magic.ā
Betty Lennox is an elemental witch on a mission to leave her desert hometown of Smokethorn, California, for good. But first, she needs to sell the property she inherited from her mother to someone who, among other things, doesnāt mind living in a paranormal seniors’ trailer park in a town where itās so hot in summer that the local demons head back to Hades to cool off.
Sheās also running low on cash to keep up the protection spell on the park. When sheās offered a job to procure a cursed grimoire, one so dangerous the local coven wonāt touch it, she takes it. Even though the job comes from a vicious wolf alpha who wonāt rest until sheās dead.
To get the grimoire and keep her soul, sheāll have to lean on her partnerāa magic cat named FennelāCecil, a homicidal garden gnome, a graveyard demon, her retired necromancer best friend, and her second-least favorite bartender in town, who also just happens to be the wolf alphaās son.
If they can manage to work together without killing each other, Betty just might survive.
For fans of urban fantasy with a side of slow-burn romance.
Anything that brings dragons into the story has me hooked. Especially a dark fantasy series written by a new author Iāve not read before. I knew exactly what to expect from the description that Boleyn was incorporating certain popular elements into her series.
Thereās the academy aspect where the main character is forced to attend a school where they are surrounded by enemies. The character is an automatic isolated entity, by their nature and background. And forced into a dangerous situation by their status and often gender and/or species.
Boleyn does several interesting things here by specifically not delving into the world building of this universe or of the world that the main character of Medra Pendragon, a person dropped accidentally into a world of vampires. Even by the end of the book, weāve learned little about how sheās actually arrived or even what the world sheās living on is actually like.
Instead, the author winnows down the narrative focus to the dramatic plot lines and relationships between Medra, vampire Blake Drakharrow and the members of his family, the formidable and sinister Drakharrow clan. The forced consort relationship between Blake and Medra, and the hidden secrets of Blakeās uncle are well written and emotionally charged storylines that keep the readerās attention and absolutely invested in their relationship.
The author gives us a wonderful secondary cast of humans and creatures, each interesting and in one case, very fluffy.
The ending scenes are fantastic! Exciting and shocking. They set the stage for a new scary unpredictable second novel.
The author has given her readers a trigger /warning list at the beginning of the book, which I appreciate. Check it out.
Highly recommended and Iām onto the next in the series.

ā ā ā ā ā “You liked Fourth Wing? Then there’s a good chance you’ll LOVE this story (it’s definitely on my top 5 this year!!). I absolutely couldn’t put this book down.” -A Cup of Tea and a Book Please
What do you get if you mix Harry Potter with Fourth Wing, Zodiac Academy, a dash of Arthurian legend, and lots and lots of vampires? Bloodwing Academy.
I didn’t sign up for this.
A half-fae in a school of highblood vampires? That’s a recipe for torment.
I’m Medra Pendragonālast of the dragon riders, or so they tell me. Funny thing is, there are no dragons left. Not a single one. But somehow, that hasn’t stopped the vampires from deciding I’m worth capturing. Now I’m stuck at Bloodwing Academy, where the highbloods run everything and blightborn like me? We’re just blood in their veins, pawns in their games.
But that’s not even the worst part.
Enter Blake Drakharrow. Cold, arrogant, and way too gorgeous for his own good. He’s been tormenting me since the moment we met, and now, thanks to some ancient ritual, we’re betrothed. He acts like he owns me, but I’m not going down without a fight.
Bloodwing isn’t just a schoolāit’s a battlefield. Highbloods fight for power, and if you’re weak? You’re dead.
Between deadly competitions, lies that could get me executed, and a dragon-shaped secret looming over my head, all I have to do is survive. Easy, right? Except I’m starting to think the real danger isn’t the academyāit’s what I’m becoming in this twisted game of power.
And Blake? He might just be the one who pushes me over the edge.
They think they can control me. They think they can use me.
But they have no idea what they’ve awakened.
Bestselling epic fantasy author Briar Boleyn returns with a new series perfect for fans of hate to love romance, heart-pounding action, and dark magic.
On Wings of Blood is a dark academia fantasy romance featuring a bully villain with Draco Malfoy energy who (eventually) gets the girl, all the tension and banter, and a tantalizingly dangerous blend of court and school intrigue all set in an intricately crafted world with unique vampire and dragon lore. Bloodwing Academy may have crossover characters from the world of Blood of a Fae, but can be read completely independently. If you’re a fan of original mythology, unique world-building, and character-driven romantasy books such as Crowns of Nyaxia, From Blood and Ash, and A Court of Thorns and Roses, you won’t want to miss out on this riveting new saga.
Iām not familiar with the series but really enjoyed the book. Devilish did a great job setting up the world building and establishing the series characters.
Thereās a strong sense of world building and the intensity of the characters and sexual elements are vividly captured, without being graphic or otherwise exaggerated.
I enjoyed the relationship that was slowly built up between Lucien and Kai. From one of fear to that of safety and finding the right balance between being able to trust and express yourself in a positive and loving manner. Both men are great characters and I love them both.
Devilish has what Iād consider a soft D/s sexual preference to the relationship between Lucien and Kai. The relationship is in its infancy, they are establishing their own boundaries and learning about each otherās preferences within this dynamic. Safe word, the use of āsirā, expectations, are all well defined. So if BDSM or a well established D/s relationship might make you uncomfortable, I think this would work for you.
Another winner. And a recommendation for those who enjoy spicy intense contemporary LGBTQIA romance with a kink. Can absolutely be read as a stand alone, unlike other books that have come with the same note.
In a world where everything is within his grasp, love is the only thing thatās ever eluded him.
Lucien Vale is temptation incarnate. Devilishly charming, wickedly confident, and sinfully sexy, he rules Manhattanās most elite clubs, indulging the cityās darkest desires with a knowing smirk and a whisper of seduction. Heās built an empire, played the game to perfection, and isnāt afraid to get his hands dirty when it serves the greater good.
But love? Thatās always been just out of reach.
Then he sees Kai Danielsāa man too raw, too vulnerable, and too damn captivating to ignoreābeing used by someone who doesnāt deserve him. And Lucien doesnāt hesitate. He steps in, knowing full well that some things arenāt meant to be owned.
But Kaiās past isnāt ready to let him go. His tormentor is powerful, relentless, and determined to make them both pay. As the stakes rise, Lucien is forced to become the man heās kept buriedāthe one who doesnāt just play the game but makes sure his enemies never play again.
Now, with danger closing in and their connection burning hotter than ever, Lucien and Kai must decide if theyāre willing to risk everything for a love that was never part of the plan.
* * * * * * Devilish can be read as a standalone novel in the Park Avenue Kings world, but for maximum enjoyment, read after Savage.
