A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audio Review :The Missing Ingredient by Brian Lancaster and Seb Yarrick (Narrator)

Chef Marcus Vine is a busy man, running his own popular restaurant in the UK and opening another with an investment partner in New York. But he finds time to step in and help out when he realizes his former best friend’s family needs him. Raine died a year ago and her husband, Tom, is struggling to be everything to his two daughters.

With Marcus’s help and support, their lives take a turn for the better. And along the way, Marcus’s feelings for Tom—unrequited love—take on a renewed life. And then one day, Tom confesses his attraction to Marcus. He’s not gay, of course. That’s reiterated a number of times. So much so, that this reviewer found it distasteful when they went from that declaration to a simple kiss to penetrative sex. If one isn’t gay, why not try frottage or fellatio first? It just felt wrong and rushed.

And then, of course, when Tom realizes Marcus has feelings for him, he backs off, and Marcus finds out he’s seeing a woman. So we have the heartbreak action, and the crisis comes when one of the girls needs medical attention and Marcus saves the day. But is Tom grateful? Nope. Now we have the period of breaking off, cooling down, and then the finale with the grand sweeping gesture. And the ending was… There’s not really a way to describe it. Granted, I was listening to an audiobook, but it seemed really bizarre to me—definitely from the pages of an old-fashioned dime novel romance.

Granted all these stories are based on old tropes. And granted, audiobooks pass quickly and there’s no chance to reread sections for clarity, so I could be wrong in my assessment. However, I will say that Seb Yarrick did a nice job on the narration. With a very British accent, he brought authenticity to the feel of the story. But I’m not a fan of gay for you when the character refuses to identify as anything but straight, even after sex, so I can’t rate this higher than 3 stars. As it is, the 3 stars were mostly earned by the narrator.

The cover by Aaron Anderson is a typical Dreamspun cover, with the circle in the center that, in this case, features a handsome man in chef’s coat in front and a man in a bathtub in the background. That is definitely not a scene from the story, but at least the colors are bright and the guy is attractive.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audio Review: The Soldati Prince (Soldati Hearts #1) by Charlie Cochet and Manuel Pombo (Narrator)

This was a fairly short audiobook but it was long on enjoyment. A different take on shifters, Charlie Cochet brings us tiger shifters (of course—big cats are her favorites!), but they are from a different world—a world of magical creatures and warriors who defend humanity from the darkness.

Riley Murrough is just a regular guy and as he’s going about his work one day he’s suddenly in a life or death struggle with demons. Who knew? When the battle is over and he realizes he’s been helped by a group of tigers who shift to human form, he’s sure he’s dreaming. But the tattoo that has appeared on his arm matches that of the king of these creatures—the Soldati King, and Riley is his Prince, his lifemate.

No insta-love here, however, as Khalon, the king, denies his connection to Riley. He has his reasons and though Riley finally faces facts and realizes he needs to accept the rejection, the magical realm has different plans for them.

This was a lively adventure, a bit too short to get into a lot of detail, but certainly enough detail to whet my appetite for more. I’ve already moved the next book in this series to my TBR.

The narration was good, though it could have been better. Manuel Pombo had a very pleasing voice but his narration was quite fast—almost as if he was rushing to finish by a short deadline. And the differentiation between the two MCs was sometimes noticeable, and other times not. I think over time, I will come to like this narrator, especially if the narrative is slowed down a bit.

The story itself was interesting and the characters engaging, including the secondary characters, two of whom will be featured in book two. They were both very positive, upbeat and often humorous throughout this story so theirs is one I must read. Overall, this was a nice treat and I recommend it to lovers of paranormal and fantasy romance.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audio Review : Ravensong (Green Creek #2) by T.J. Klune and Kirt Graves (Narrator)

TJ Klune has the most incredible imagination of any author I know. I’m at a loss for words to describe just how phenomenal this story was. No wait… Let’s call this a saga, not a story, because that’s truly what it is and we are only midway through this unique experience. The author recently announced that he has plans for two more books in the series and the epilogue gives us a clue as to what the next one will be. OMG! I can’t wait!

Gordo Livingstone is a witch. In fact, he’s the witch for the Bennett Clan and he’s the soulmate of Mark Bennett, uncle of Joe, the current alpha. We met these two star-crossed lovers in book one, Wolfsong. This is their story.

Through intermittent flashbacks, the author cleverly lets us see how Gordo’s life was shaped—his evil father who killed his mother when she killed his father’s tether, a woman with whom he was having an affair. His mother always taught him that wolves can’t be trusted. They need you and use you but don’t really love you. Though he might scoff at that lesson intellectually, she managed to ingrain the lesson emotionally.

Gordo thought he was done with the pack when they all moved away and left him behind. Their departure cemented his mother’s lessons deep in his heart. Now they are back and Gordo tries to ignore Mark Bennett with every breath he takes. It’s not easy. In fact, the song between his raven and Mark’s wolf is crying to be heard. When outside forces intervene in the quiet town of Green Creek and hope is at its lowest, the Bennett pack, assisted by their witch and the humans who support them, gather their reserve strength to fight a battle that must be won.

I am not going to include any spoilers for this book in my review. I will say that the plot is complex, with multiple layers of deceit, intrigue, and evil that goes back many years. There are characters here I love to hate and those I hate to love. Mark and Gordo seem to be ill-fated and much of the book left me feeling as if my stomach were in knots. But I kept moving forward. Avidly. There’s no way I could turn off this audiobook, even to eat, never mind sleep. And the ending was worth the wait.

Kirt Graves is as outstanding in his performance of this audio as he was in Wolfsong. The cast of hundreds each has a distinctive voice. I totally forgot that a man narrated the book when a woman spoke, and I loved the pitch, tone, and accent he assigned to Gordo. As much as I highly recommend the story itself, I recommend listening to this audio. It’s beyond description. A must buy, for sure.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audio Review: A Wish Upon the Stars (Tales From Verania #4) by T.J. Klune and Michael Lesley (Narrator)

To say TJ Klune is a brilliant storyteller is an understatement. Those who don’t believe need to read the Tales from Verania series. The entire series is a magical epic saga and this last installment, the ending of a story that has wound its magic in and out of my heartstrings was the epitome of amazing. Now, add to that, the absolutely outstanding audiobook narration from the highly talented Michael Lesley, and there’s not even a stitch of room for improvement. A superb 18 hours and 27 minutes of entertainment!

Sam of Wilds returns from the Dark Woods to find that Prince Justin and Ryan Foxheart, his beloved cornerstone, are leading a resistance movement along with (the dreaded) Lady Tina and, of course, Gary and Tiggy. The city of Lockes has fallen and dark wizard Myrin is in control. But not for long—Sam and his dragons are back.

Unfortunately, Sam has to face the consequences of running away from the chaos he left behind. And though he loves Ryan and can’t wait to see him, Gary and Tiggy come back first—and Gary is fit to be tied—though he does get diverted from his tirade by his one true love—Kevin the charming dragon.

I honestly don’t know which of the million or so character voices Michael Lesley used is my favorite. Topping the list, though, is Kevin, who not only has a deep-toned Scottish accented voice, but what he says is always sexually explicit and totally inappropriate and, of course, hysterically funny. Second to that is Darren, the fairy king. Yes, the entire cast of characters from the series makes an appearance at one point or another in this book, and I loved every moment. Another plus to listening to this on audio is Michael Lesley’s talent in bringing in other sound effects like turning pages in a book, creaking doors, roaring dragons, and tons more.

The final chapter and epilogue are well worth the wait to get there. I hope other readers were as surprised as I was by Myrin’s fate and the return of someone special to Sam’s life. And speaking of Sam’s life…well, maybe not…no spoilers here. All I can say is don’t miss a chance to listen to this book, no—entire series—on audio. You won’t be disappointed. Very highly recommended.

Though Dusty is odd for a 23-year-old – no liquor, no sugar, and he can’t even drive – the more Ben gets to know Dusty, the more he admires him. But is Ben going to give up a guy who drives a Ferrari for one who takes the bus?

He must be mad. Dusty knows he and Ben can never work. After all, Ben’s perfect…and Dusty isn’t. But Ben might surprise everyone with proof that he’s only mad in love.

If you love sweet contemporary MM romance, then here is a light-hearted story that is high on the warmth, feel goodery aspect and pretty much low on the angst. It’s also on the short side, so if you are new to the experience of listening to novels in the audioformat, this is just the right length for a first introduction.

Lain’s character of Ben Shane is someone we can all connect with. Hardworking, Ben is totally invested in his job working with charities and finding investors to partner with them. It’s rewarding work and he enjoys it, long hours and all. Not so his wealthy, privileged fiance,Alan Ashland, who feels that Ben’s time should be spent with him, ala kept husband since Alan has more money he can spend in several lifetimes. It doesn’t seem to matter what Ben is saying about the importance of his job or work, Alan doesn’t seem to be getting it. Not a great thing with a wedding in the works.

I loved the character of Ben, he’s well defined, layered, and relatable. Alan? Well, he’s just about every rich boy stereotype rolled into one, and that may be accurate, as a person, he doesn’t come across as anything but less dimensional. Probably intentionally as he’s not someone you would want to spend time with. The voice given to him by narrator Ry Forrest reinforces that impression perfectly of a spoiled rich young man with all the depth of a summer puddle on a 100 degree day. Nope, not lidable at all.

Than there’s Dusty who comes with a bit of a mystery. It won’t take a genius for someone to figure out it’s medical but as I don’t do spoilers I won;t go further here. Dustry is the polar opposite of Alan. With a wide open personality, charming and fun, happy and easy to be around, Ben is quickly drawn to the man that is everything he needs and wants.

This romance drew me in as quickly as I connected to the men involved. The contrast with Alan’s annoying appearances with Dusty’s interaction with Ben and, well, everyone around him, it was clear chemistry in the air. There is a riotous, strong woman at the center as well. Adored her too. No, not Dusty’s mother.

If I had my concerns, it was bringing up a serious medical issues in a short story of this length. I don’t believe you can adequately address it but Tara Lain does a good job.

This story moves along quickly, there’s obstacles (because of course you have to have a few), and and absolutely lovely ending. The original story is only 120 pages in all, so when I say it goes by swiftly, it does. The narrator, Ry Forest , does an excellent job with all the characters, different voices no matter the gender, and manages to sweep us along on this sweet emotional rollercoaster ride of a romance.

An Ali Audio Review: No Tears for Darcy by Vicki Reese and Brock Hatton (Narrator)

Letting love pass them by would be a crime.

Former forensic accountant Cameron has lost nearly everyone he’s ever loved, and now his vintage clothing shop has been broken into and trashed. When town police chief Will Carson asks an out-of-town cop friend of his for help, Cam takes one look at the dark-haired, blue-eyed detective and knows he’s in real trouble—and it has nothing to do with vandalism or murder.

Pete Minchelli is on leave from his job in Philadelphia due to a gunshot wound, but he figures he can help an academy buddy with some light police work. Plus, he’ll have a chance to experience small-town life. He’s tired of the big city and all its corruption. But he quickly discovers that not all the bad stuff happens in cities. What he doesn’t expect to find is death, treachery—or love.

This was a romantic suspense with a pretty entertaining plotline. The story is told from multiple points of view. This is not something that always works for me but in this case I found myself enjoying see the story unfold through the various character’s eyes.

I liked both Cam and Pete and I thought their romance was lovely. It was sweet and I really liked the two of them together. They had what I would consider a happily for now. I would definitely like to read a short story about them down the road.

This was narrated by Brock Hatton who was a new narrator for me. I thought he had a nice voice and did a good job on the different characters and the different points of view.

Overall I really enjoyed this and would recommend it. Both the author and narrator were new to me but I would try both of their works again.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audio Review: Acceptance (Forbes Mates #3) by Grace R. Duncan and Chistopher Boucher (Narrator)

Dr. Miles Grant acknowledges that his destined mate could be either gender even though his bisexuality cost him his family and his pack. Luckily he found the Forbes Pack, who happily accepts him just as he is. What he never counted on was finding his mate in Pittsburgh or for his mate to be another species entirely—a cat!

Quincy Archer isn’t just any jaguar shifter. He is the heir to the leadership of his pride. Destined mates are nothing but legend to the nearly extinct and generally solitary jaguars, and Quincy certainly never expected to find one for himself, much less a male… or a wolf.

However, finding each other and coming to terms with their species is the least of their worries. Quincy is expected to select a proper female mate, father a cub, and take his place as heir to the pride. Except Quincy refuses, having no interest in women or leadership and knowing he isn’t right for it. But his father will stop at nothing—not even attempting to kill Miles—to get his way. Quincy and Miles must overcome many obstacles to stay together as the destined mates they’re meant to be.

Unfortunately, I was put off by the narrator’s voice for jaguar shifter, Quincy Archer, from the beginning. He gave Quincy a French accent that came off very campy—and somewhat creepy. Miles, on the other hand, had a nice voice, one I’d find typical of a sweet doctor who happens to be a wolf shifter.

As the blurb states, Quincy is heir to leadership of his pride, though he doesn’t want it. Most of the story centers around the uniqueness of a jaguar and wolf shifter couple and the attempts on Quincy’s and Miles’s life. Quincy doesn’t speak to his father, who wants Quincy to come back, marry a woman, and sire several cubs. They suspect his father must be involved in the problems they’ve been having, but when they eventually capture several of the men, they learn that it’s a much more complex plot than they originally thought.

While all this is going on, Miles and Quincy are growing closer in their relationship. Appearances by MCs from the two previous books in the series are frequent and the men provide the help—the muscle— needed to win the fight for their lives and come to the truth of what’s been happening. It appears to be a complex plot, and yet turned out to be quite simple. However, to be honest, I had difficulty following the action and I kept expecting something more than what eventually occurred. Added to the fact I couldn’t stand Quincy’s voice, and my pleasure rating on this is quite low. Though I enjoyed the others in the series, I wouldn’t recommend this one in audio.

On a positive note, the epilogue takes place eight years later and there are lots of pups and cubs running around with fathers and uncles chasing them. That alone pushed my rating up to 3 stars.

The cover by Reese Dante depicts the two young men, faces nose-to-nose, with their animals in the foreground. Similar to the covers on the first books, it’s very attractive and perfect for the story.

An Alisa Audio Review: BFF by K.C. Wells and Michael Mola (Narrator)

I met Matt in second grade, and we’ve been inseparable ever since. We went to the same schools, studied at the same college. When we both got jobs in the same town, we shared an apartment. And when my life took an unexpected turn, Matt was there for me. Every milestone in my life, he was there to share it. And what’s really amazing? After all these years, we’re still the best of friends.

Which brings me to this fragile, heart-stopping moment: I want to tell him I love him, really love him, but I’m scared to death of what he’ll say. If I’ve got this all wrong, I’ll lose him—forever.

Oh, this was such a sweet story. Matt and David have been best friends forever and really have been in love with each other for just about as long. I loved been able to hear about their journey to discovering this and the life they have built together.

We get to see snippets of their lives growing up but it was the important moments that helped shape who they are. It’s clear that these two just didn’t realize how they feel about each other until David has a major health scare. Even though the story was told from David’s point of view he really describes Matt perfectly, it make it easy to understand and love both of these characters.

Michael Mola did a great job narrating this story. The different voices also helped with keeping track of the story and I think they were perfect for the characters. I could easily feel the characters emotions through the way he portrayed them.

A MelanieM Audiobook Review: Crocus (Bonfires #2) by Amy Lane and Nick J. Russo (Narrator)

Saying “I love you” doesn’t guarantee peace or a happy ending.

High School Principal “Larx” Larkin was pretty sure he’d hit the jackpot when Deputy Sherriff Aaron George moved in with him, merging their two families as seamlessly as the chaos around them could possibly allow.

But when Larx’s pregnant daughter comes home unexpectedly and two of Larx’s students are put in danger, their tentative beginning comes crashing down around their ears.

Larx thought he was okay with the dangers of Aaron’s job, and Aaron thought he was okay with Larx’s daughter—who is not okay—but when their worst fears are almost realized, it puts their hearts and their lives to the test. Larx and Aaron have never wanted anything as badly as they want a life together. Will they be able to make it work when the world is working hard to keep them apart? (

I fell deeply in love with these character in Bonfire, the first story in this series. Amy Lane made it so easy because, as it’s often the way with her contemporary romances, it’s an ensemble piece. We don’t just have a couple to focus on, but, just as in life, Amy Lane gives us growing and grown children on both sides to deal with, separate households, pets, jobs, and even coming out to mesh and deal with. Life is messy. Amy Lane gets it and writes the hell out of it. Same goes for the complexities of family dynamics, let alone two. Then throw in kids you end of taking in and making a part of a sort of paramecium ever growing family, extending little arms out into a community that needs it so badly.

Talk about a book I wasn’t ready to let go of.

Now comes Crocus. And it’s everything I could have wanted and hoped for. More even.

Our families are back, still adjusting to each other and all the events of Bonfires. As with all families, there’s no downtime, no respite. And the first upset to deal with is a pregnant, and clinically depressed daughter returning to the households. This whole element, from baby daddy (which has some wonderfully humorous and serious elements ala Amy Lane) is folded beautifully into the story, never overwhelming the many other themes here, including the foundation love story of Larx and Aaron, who center and ground each other as well as their expanding family. Boy, are there other serious story threads! Child abuse, PTSD, gang violence, substance living, just to name some of the issues the author deals with here. Yet all work together in one tapestry of a novel, weaving together so many threads that combine to become an incredible story.

There are new dramas and emergencies as you might expect with Larx’s job as Principal and Aaron’s in the Sheriff’s office. New members are slowly melded into the combined Larkin/George family outfit and seamlessly into your heart. Jaime, who I fell in love with immediately, his broken brother Berto, Elton (not the name you will remember him by)…all welcomed and loved, all understood and embraced. Each and everyone not characters but people that stick with you, get under your skin, and remain in your memory of those that you care about and love.

That crocus poking its head up out of the snow, offering up its promise of new life and growth? Of hope? Perfect for this family and story. How I love it and them so.

I read Bonfires but listened to Crocus. Narrator Nick J. Russo did an amazing job with such a huge cast of characters. He switched effortlessly between ages, teenagers to men in the middle ages, genders, and accents even held no issues for him. It felt like a number of people narrating this story instead of one, the flow was so even and the acting so excellent that I lost myself instantly in the story and forgot about everything else. I highly recommend him as a narrator, not just here but in other audiobooks.

If you haven’t already read this series, start with Bonfires and then come to Crocus. This is a beautifully written series, with fully realized characters…a true ensemble cast that’s unforgettable in every way. I loved listening to the audiobook version. It makes me want to experience Bonfires in the same format. And yes I highly recommend them both.

A Lila Audiobook Review: Cowboy in the Crosshairs (Turquoise, New Mexico) by BA Tortuga and Narrator: Dorian Bane

Once upon a time, a prince lived in a magical kingdom called Turquoise, New Mexico.

Well, really, TJ is a small-town police chief. Every Friday he holds court in the diner with the local holy roller, the art colonists, and the horsey people. But the Benes, who own the rodeo company, keep to themselves. TJ knows, because he was once hot and heavy with the oldest Bene son.

When Wacey Bene gets trampled by a remuda and comes home to heal, he’s none too happy to run into TJ, or his two little boys and their momma. The story might end there—if it wasn’t for some pesky bastard trying to kill Wacey.

The law steps in, and the townsfolk are cross about somebody messing with one of their own.

But once the bad guy is put away, can TJ and Wacey make their place in this wild and eccentric town a permanent one?

Cowboy in the Crosshairs is a western comedy with a second chance love story at its center. Everything from Wacey’s name, and those of his siblings, to his mishaps with TJ, added to the comedic style the author often uses. If you are looking for drama, this book is not it.

What it really is… an escape from a traditional cowboy romance. It’s about rodeo, family legacy, and missed opportunities. It’s easy to cheer for Wacey and TJ, and the whole cast added to the out of the ordinary story. I enjoyed their families and their crazy neighbors.

The author did an excellent job bringing the story full circle from the moment the main characters saw each other again, to the hints of their life together after their HEA. The easy love between Wacey and TJ was refreshing and how much they enjoyed each other kept the reader engaged.

This is a good start to a new series. A bit out of the ordinary, but good enough for an easy read day.

I’m not a big fan of Dorian Bane and this narration didn’t help the cause. Yes, it was western, but it took away from the characters. Some of them were too much of a stereotype. I felt like I was listening to The Dukes of Hazzards’ narrator; it worked in some areas, but others were ridiculous.
