A MelanieM Release Day Review: Out of the Ashes (Asheville Arcana #1) by Ari McKay

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Asheville Arcana

In their differences, they’ll find strength—and love.

Alpha werewolf Eli Hammond returns from a fishing trip to discover a nasty surprise—five members of his pack murdered and the rest missing. He needs help locating and rescuing his pack mates, but the supernatural council in Asheville, North Carolina, turns him away.

Except for one man.

As they work together, Eli is stunned—and not especially thrilled—to discover half-elf Arden Gilmarin is his destined mate. But as Arden and his friends struggle to help Eli in his quest, Eli surrenders to the demands of his body—and his heart. They’ll need to bond together, because the forces opposing them are stronger and more sinister than anyone predicted. The evil has its sights set on Arden, and if Eli wants to save his mate and the people he is entrusted with protecting, he’s in for the fight of his life.

Hot, sexy, scary, mysterious and a thoroughly entertaining tale! Out of the Ashes (Asheville Arcana #1) by Ari McKay is all these things.  The first in a  new subline called Dreamspun Beyond from Dreamspinner Press (be still my heart) this story combines  romance, mate bonding, werewolves, fae, vampires, mages, black magic and a mystery to solve all rolled into one for a wonderful read I couldn’t put down.

Alpha werewolf Eli Hammond comes looking for help in Ashville from the supernatural council there when he finds that his pack has been killed with the remaining members missing.  When the older members of the council reject him, it’s one of the younger members, Arden Gilmarin who offers his help.  Arden, along with that of two of his friends, a mage and a vampire, work with Eli to unravel a mystery that turns nastier and darker with each clue they uncover.  That the biggest surprise is that Arden and Eli are mates?  That fact maybe one of the hardest things for Eli to adjust to.

McKay lays out a great universe here and community of supernaturals in Asheville, past and present.  We have everything from dryads to vampires here and it works charmingly. I love it when you can get pulled into a book with supernatural elements and the author has made you feel that it’s not only possible but absolutely authentic!  I believed in those magical elements in and around Asheville, wanted to go peaking and looking for them myself!

Growly Eli and elegant Arden are a wonderful match for each other, each in tune with their environments and quirks.  And yes, their interactions together, in and out of bed are very hot indeed.

The mystery here is solved but leaves open an overall arc for the series to continue.  Plus there’s a vampire and mage that very much need to find their own mates and romances next.  Can’t wait to see what’s in store for them and the Asheville Arcana series.  What a great way to spring the new Dreamspun Beyond line on the readers!  I’ll be gobbling these right up just as I do the Dreamspun Desires regular series!  I recommend Out of the Ashes by Ari McKay for all you lovers of shifter romances and romances in general.

Cover art by Aaron Anderson.  Another great cover by Aaron Anderson.  That certainly is Arden, love the backdrop.

A MelanieM Review: Accepting The Fall by Meg Harding

Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5

Confronting the past is never easy.

Cole Whitaker is happy. He has the job and boyfriend he always wanted. His heart’s in no danger of being broken, and he can’t ask for more from life. As a kindergarten teacher, he sees it all; however, one troublesome student has him reaching out to the parent, wanting to help. There’s something about Savanah that tugs at his heartstrings.

He never expected her father.

Zander Brooks hasn’t had an easy life, and he’s made some mistakes. Freshly retired from the military and working as a firefighter, Zander thought he’d left Cole in the rearview mirror. He’s not expecting him to appear in St. Petersburg, Florida, of all places, teaching his daughter’s kindergarten class. Suddenly, his biggest mistake is being shoved in his face.

This is Zander’s chance to close a door he’d never fully shut, but time with his former flame might change his mind.

Meg Harding has done a great job with Accepting the Fall.  Its enjoyable so many levels.  You have the lovers reunited storyline and the second chance at love, which are always favorites of mine.  Plus Zander Brooks, one of the main characters, has been handed the unexpected role of father in the fiery, troubled form of five year old Savanah Emerson, dropped of by her mother with her birth certificate and a wave goodbye.  So we have a father/daughter new dynamic in play as well.  So many layers here in this story and the author does a beautiful job of weaving them in and out, juggling the new/returning romance with the demands of new fatherhood.

The other mc?  Cole?  He just so happens to be Savanah’s kindergarten teacher, dealing with an angry child with abandonment issues and just maybe her father as well.  Here Cole and Zander must pry apart their past issues before they can move  forward, both as lovers and for Zander, as a parent.  Harding brings in a terrific counselor, one I would wish for in many a school or child in this situation.  Through the counselor, Harding gets to work through all the emotional issues of child abandonment/abuse and its repercussions on children now and into adulthood (with Zander). Its handled with sensitivity and impact.

I loved the romance here as well.  Cole and Zander have issues to work out, so while the attraction is as strong as it was in the past, they work into it, also mindful of the child in the middle.  Plus they are hot, hot, together.

Ah, Cole, he’s a wonder of a character.  The teacher everyone would have wanted in kindergarten,  with a house and yard full of rescued animals, Cole also has a past beyond Zander, one that bugged that heck out of me. Why?  Because with the hints, mentions of it, and an actual “I’ll tell you later” which never happens”, we don’t find out what happened to him.  It’s the main reason this book didn’t get a 5 star rating.  There’s this HUGE mystery about Cole, it’s mentioned repeatedly throughout the story and I kept waiting for the bomb to drop and it never did.  Then I thought, ok, there’s  going to be another story after this.  Nope, we got an Epilogue which sort of eliminated that.  So why bring it up at all?  You have a great story, leave unanswered things like this out if you aren’t going to resolve them.  Or don’t make them such a big deal.  Either way irritated the heck out of me and still does.

So minus that narrative kerfuffle I mentioned above, I loved this story.  It’s sweet, heart-warming, romantic and layered.  It’s one I definitely recommend.  Pick up Accepting the Fall by Meg Harding and get started today.

Cover art by Black Jazz Design doesn’t really speak to the story, the age of the characters or anything.  Meh.

A MelanieM Review: The Lure of Port Stephen by Sydney Blackburn

Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5

Robbie Wales is young and starting a new job in a new town, on his own. Coming from a split family, he was raised by his mother and maternal grandparents and came out as a teen without a lot of fuss, but his father, whom he only saw infrequently, has never known. As an adult, he’s found he’s got a lot in common with his father, and they’re finally getting to know each other. He fears coming out to his father may jeopardize that.

Then he meets Raj Williams, the attractive man in the trailer next to his father’s in a seasonal RV park. Raj is handsome, sophisticated, yet loves to fish and watch silly Disney movies.

Raj finds Robbie equally interesting. But Robbie’s still in the closet, at least in Port Stephen, and Raj’s ex used that as an excuse to treat him as nothing more than a friend with benefits. He’s not interested in a repeat experience.

Robbie finally finds the courage to come out to his father, but was it all just for a summer fling?

The Lure of Port Stephen by Sydney Blackburn is in many ways like spending the day out on or by the water.  It’s a hot summer day read, sexy, sweet,  and a little steamy.  Its got fish.   Men that like to fish.  And have lots of sex.  Plus there’s a sweet coming out story and falling in love.  In other words, there’s a lot to like here.

Blackburn does a lovely job in the characterization of Raj and Robbie and their respective families.  Robbie, a machinist, is trying to reconnect with his Dad who lives in a trailer with his stepmother by the water.  He’s out to his mom and everyone else but not his Dad, and he’s still trying to figure out their relationship.  Robbie is young but still has a maturity about him that’s wonderful here.  He’s not ashamed to be gay, he’s just not sure of his place yet in his father’s life.  Then he meets the handsome, gay man who has the trailer lot next door to his dad’s for the summer, Raj Williams.  Down from Toronto, Raj has a work job that allows him to move around so he can enjoy his summer at Port Stephens.  Raj never figured on meeting Robbie.  A gay fling that turns into friendship and then more.

I found I started to engage in this romance more when they decided to become more serious about each other.  Up until then, while I enjoyed the characters, I wasn’t terribly invested in the romance.  After several events, especially (my favorites) the ones with Robbie’s dad, the story grew wings for me.  In fact, the scenes that resonated the most with me?  All the coming out ones, and the ones that followed. It includes those between Raj and Robbie’s dad, so funny and poignant.

I thought the ending was sweet if a little abrupt.  Maybe an epilogue wouldn’t have hurt here. but definitely more was needed.  Still I would recommend The Lure of Port Stephen by Sydney Blackburn as a sweet contemporary romance.

Cover art by Natasha Snow is beautiful and perfect for the story.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Sunset at Pencarrow (World of Love) by Lou Sylvre and Anne Barwell

Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5

Kiwi Nathaniel Dunn is in a fighting mood, but how does a man fight Wellington’s famous fog? In the last year, Nate’s lost his longtime lover to boredom and his ten-year job to the economy. Now he’s found a golden opportunity for employment where he can even use his artistic talent, but to get the job, he has to get to Christchurch today. Heavy fog means no flight, and the ticket agent is ignoring him to fawn over a beautiful but annoying, overly polite American man.

Rusty Beaumont can deal with a canceled flight, but the pushy Kiwi at the ticket counter is making it difficult for him to stay cool. The guy rubs him all the wrong ways despite his sexy working-man look, which Rusty notices even though he’s not looking for a man to replace the fiancé who died two years ago. Yet when they’re forced to share a table at the crowded airport café, Nate reveals the kind heart behind his grumpy façade. An earthquake, sex in the bush, and visits from Nate’s belligerent ex turn a day of sightseeing into a slippery slope that just might land them in love.

So many things about this book pulled me to it from the authors and that gorgeous cover to that idea of people meeting in an airport and making a special connection.  Yes, I know….but overdone or not, the idea is magic and possible.  Here the location, takes it that next step further.  The story is located in Wellington, New Zealand so the authors take advantage of the many incredible sights including the Orongorongos during a camping sequence and the coast.  We even get a small taste of an earthquake.  But mostly we get two men making a personal exploration of each other, physically, mentally and emotionally.

And something like that can be wearing at times.  Mind you this is a quick trip for one and a unfortunate delay for the other.  And Nate comes off pretty awful at times in this story, argumentative and irritating.  Sometimes Rusty is right behind him.  Each time they work through their various issues, which is nicely adult of them no matter they are strangers strongly attracted to one another.  Both Lou Sylvre and Anne Barwell write great characters and I see that both in Rusty and Nate.  One man is still grieving the loss of his husband, the other trying to recover from a bad relationship; not the best foundation when meeting someone you find hugely attractive with a limited timeframe.  So there is a lot of talking, stress, working things through internally and out.  The story is told from both points of view and third person, necessary to get everything in the authors are trying to accomplish.  However, when you are trying to do that in only 129 pages you might not be giving yourself (and the men) the time needed to let the reader in and really get to know these men and take them to heart.  One aspect I adored?  The fact that the men acknowledged they felt “something” more, maybe not love exactly, but something strong enough that they wanted to explore it further.  I liked that realism and appreciated it.  That was another factor that elevated this story for me.

I have to admit one of my favorite things about this story was the ending before the epilogue.  It takes place in the airport.  It has the right last minute romantic touch I just love in a story. Perfectly done!  The Epilogue was even better.  Still I wished for more length, more time spent with both men to get to know a bit more about them, their histories and maybe a little less of Nate “going off”.  But this is a lovely romance, sweet and heartwarming with a great location. I definitely recommend Sunset at Pencarrow (World of Love) by Lou Sylvre and Anne Barwell.

Cover Artist: Reese Dante.  What a gorgeous cover.  Caught my eye and kept it there, romantic and pertinent to the story.

A MelanieM Review: Seduced by the Tide (Dragon Soul #2) by Sean Michael

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Meet the Beteferoce brothers. Five dragon shifters, each with a strong elemental power. And each with a fierce desire to find his soul mate.
…
Deke has yet to meet a man who gives him a rush. Coast Guard rescue has kept the dragon shifter busy, but there’s no harder work than finding a mate. Then comes Bryan. Bearded and inked, the personal trainer turned mechanic smells of grease, sweat and red meat. How irresistibly human can you get? And when it comes to hot, slamming sex, they’re the perfect fit. Now all Deke has to do is to tell Bryan what he really is, and what he has planned for them.

Bryan has never met anyone like Deke, a consuming lover with a body so arousing it damn near hurts. And he knows how to use every inch of it. Yet he can’t shake the feeling that Deke is hiding something. Just not this-the stud he’s falling for is a centuries-old dragon who has marked him as a mate.
Bryan has to admit that something inside him is changing. For the first time ever, he’s satisfied, body and soul. If Deke really is telling the truth, this could be his destiny-if he’s ready to face it.

There is no question that Sean Michael writes hot, sexy men and combustible sex scenes.  That’s in abundance here with dragon shifter Deke and his soul mate Bryan.  This is not a 1-🔥 story but 10 🔥 as their scenes together almost set the room on fire, ironic when one dragon’s element is water.  But I’m getting a little ahead of myself.

Seduced by the Tide by Sean Michael is the second story in the Dragon Soul series and the first one I’ve read (something I’m going to remedy asap).  While I would have liked to have had the background and history of that first story, I don’t feel it was necessary to have in order to understand everything that was going on here.  Michael delivers enough past information that I wasn’t left floundering in the dark, instead I felt I had a pretty good foundation of this universe to sit back and enjoy the meeting and mating of Deke and Bryan. Plus they were surrounded by the first couple (and Bryan’s neighbors),Jack and Shae. This was beneficial in so many ways.  Having Jack and Shae there provided additional information as to what was happening to this couple (they had  gone through it) and gave a wonderful update to those readers who had read the first story.

I loved the depth of world building here and the glimpses I got of the other brothers who’s books  I know are coming.  There was the tattoo and Elf ink master I wanted to know more about, plus the dragon home world and of course the rest of the Beteferoce brothers.  Michael makes each man interesting and their mating sexy, hot and intimate.

I can’t wait for the next story and get to find out how it all began with the first installment Branded by Flames (Dragon Soul, #1) by which I’m guessing that Jake the dragon shifter’s element is fire.  I hope it’s as good as this story.  As it is, if you love hot men, hot sex, love and dragons, you will love Seduced by the Tide (Dragon Soul #2) by Sean Michael.

Cover design is perfect for this story.  I love the dragon elements on the bottom half especially.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Breaking Bonds (The Walker Boys 2) by Ari McKay

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

From the frying pan into the fire.

After a critic’s review attacks both Chef Liam Walker’s culinary skills and his personal life, Liam can no longer take the heat of the cutthroat New York City restaurant scene. He needs to get out of the kitchen—at least long enough to cool down and regroup.

At the Overlook Resort in North Carolina, Liam meets owner Carter Galloway. Carter has a passion for the hospitality business to rival Liam’s own, and it’s not hard to see where their shared interests—and attraction—could lead. But Carter has no interest in a fling, and Liam has no intention of walking away from the career he fought so hard for. If they want a taste of happiness together, they’ll have to find the courage to break the bonds threatening to pull them apart.

Breaking Bonds by Ari McKay is the second in The Walker Boys series and my favorite so far.  For me, Breaking Bonds has everything the first one, Striking Sparks, didn’t.  From the gorgeous setting in the Smokies (a favorite location of mine) near Asheville to the mouthwatering food descriptions and finally to the great chemistry between two layered MCs, Breaking Bonds has exactly what I look for in a sweet contemporary romance.

Breaking Bonds is about the ties that bind us, in this case it’s Carter to his family’s expectations of him and their future for him which run counter to his dreams.  Its also about their lack of acceptance of his homosexuality, thinking it “phase” or action to get back at them.  Torn between trying to be a “good son” and himself,  it’s cost him financially  and emotionally everything as he chose his own path.  Carter is so open a character, so vulnerable that it’s easy to feel for him at this moment where he could lose everything.  That McKay surrounds with a staff every bit as charming and easy to connect with is a plus.  Rocky, the young chef, is especially appealing.

Chef Liam Walker also has many ties around him, some he acutely aware of that’s pushing him in directions he’s not even sure he wants.  He’s too busy to think about directions any more, consumed by the restaurant and his mentor’s and owner Marco’s demands.  Primed for the ultimate success in NYC, one bad review and rash action because of anger issues sees Liam needing a vacation from the stress and demands of the restaurant.  That first night at the Overlook does not go well for either man.  It’s so realistically written that you both cringe and laugh at the same time, then as it plays out the humor turns to sadness for all involved.

The romance here is balanced by the needs of the men to figure out their futures, their businesses and how to break the ties, the bonds holding them back.  As they do so, we also get wonderful recipes, a lush location and a great cast of secondary character (yes, I’m talking about Rocky…I adore that boy).

I have really come to love the Dreamspun Desires line from Dreamspinner Press and this story is a great example why.  Its sweet, romantic and you can read it as a standalone without having read the first one.  I wonder what the Walker Boys have in store for us next.  Bring it on, Ari McKay!

Cover Artist: Bree Archer gets the backdrop just right and the character too. Very inviting.

A Melanie Release Day Review: Hearts in Ireland (World of Love) by J.C. Long

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

When the future is shrouded and it’s hard to find direction, maybe it’s time to let the heart lead the way….

Ronan Walker stands at a crossroads, unsure how to pursue his education… unsure if he even wants to. Now that his mother is gone, all he has left are the wonderful stories of her youth in Ireland, and he’s drawn to the land of his ancestors. There, he seeks out his mother’s family and meets Fergal Walsh, who works at Ronan’s aunt’s bookstore. A love of literature facilitates a fast friendship between the two men, and even though Ronan cannot deny the potential—and his desire—for more, he cannot see a future for the two of them when he leaves Ireland. Fergal must persuade Ronan to give school in Dublin a chance—and convince Ronan that his heart has already found its home.

Ronan Walker’s mother left her beloved Ireland to marry his father and move to America, leaving part of herself behind.  Ronan was raised on stories of her family, songs of Ireland and her mother’s love for the land she left for a greater love.  Now his mother is gone, and in his grief, Ronan is stuck. Mired in depression and his inability to move forward until a talk with his father and the sudden realization that he needs to go to Ireland…take the trip his mother waited too late to make.

The character of Ronan is easy to understand when you think about someone who has lost his mother, someone he was so close to, who almost grounded him his whole life.  He has lost his mooring and now needs to find himself and in a way, his mother leads the way home for Ronan once more.  She leads him to Ireland and family.

J.C. Long’s description of Abhainn Dún—River Fort, the village where Aunt Gwendolyn and cousin Hannah live is wonderful.  I could see so easily the houses with the ancient Agas and the stores with the lanes leading up to them.  I felt as though I’d been there and that includes the pub.  In fact every part of this element of the story was vivid and real.  It made Ronan’s journey to a new life and a new love grounded and believable.  I got it when Ronan felt that he was finally at home in Abhainn Dún, amid family he knew of but now were a part of his heart.  Even the character of Fergal Walsh, who’s less substantial in feel than the others, still has a ring of authenticity about him.  This is a HFN, a promise of a start for Ronan and Fergal, which is as it should be, nothing more.

I could definitely see a sequel for Hearts in Ireland, Ronan has just begun his new start here in Ireland.  But if that doesn’t happen, I’m happen to have read this story.  It’s a lovely read, heartwarming and sweet.  Definitely one I recommend.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Somewhere on Mackinac (States of Love) by Jeff Adams

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

How far would you go for the man of your dreams?

Now that he’s single, Chicago businessman Jordan Monroe can finally take his long-desired trip to Mackinac Island for the Somewhere In Time fan celebration weekend. On the first day, Jordan finds himself attracted to Miles Colter, a handsome local stable owner who is giving horseback tours of film locations.

Jordan is surprised and charmed that Miles pursues him. When Jordan learns the stable is in trouble, he wants to help despite Miles’s resistance. As their relationship grows personally and professionally, Jordan dreads the issues that face them—an ex who won’t let him go, the complications of a long-distance relationship, and a secret he knows he shouldn’t be keeping.

Can Jordan and Miles find a way to forge a love as timeless as the romance in their favorite film?

Several things drew me immediately to this story.  One, I’m a huge fan of the film Somewhere In Time, just like the main character Jordan Monroe.  We can both spout the dialogue and scenes from the movie float in our heads.  And both of us have always wanted to visit the very place where it was filmed and the story took  place…The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.  Now thanks to Jeff Adams and his novel, Somewhere on Mackinac, I now know that The Grand Hotel has a special Somewhere In Time weekend so I’m busy looking at dates but back to this wonderful story. Yes, it’s a sweet, romantic and heartwarming story!

Jordan is finally taking this trip, one he always wanted, although not in the way he expected.  It should have been for two, but now that he’s single again, he’s moving forward and that includes taking this much anticipated vacation.  I liked everything about this character from the start and then he got better. Jordan just quietly grows in depth and charm as the story progresses and you get to know and understand the man more completely.  Observant, he takes everything in, but isn’t reserved that it keeps him from stepping out and experiencing new things.  That includes Miles Colter, the handsome stable owner who brought him to The Grand Hotel and then kept his attention afterward.

Miles is from one of the island’s established old families so you get a sense of history from him. Miles is grounded in his love for his business and the island. His family and business helps provide the drama but the interaction between Miles and Jordan is sexy, promising and romantic.  Just as you would expect from this setting.  There are obstacles to overcome, including some misconceptions but Jeff Adams makes the dynamics between the men hot and believable, so you get it when they work to achieve a future together.

Adams’ writing flowed smoothly, his characters easily connected the reader to themselves and their romance, plus they had a lovely and engaging secondary cast that I loved reading about as well.  Then there was that movie, Somewhere in Time and The Grand Hotel herself, both gifts to the story and readers.  Of course, I had to go and rewatch the movie immediately, tissues in hand, and wish that I had made the trip that Jordan had.  At least I had Somewhere on Mackinac by Jeff Adams.

Cover Artist: Alexandria Corza.  The cover is perfect with The Grand Hotel is the background and Jordan and Miles in the foreground.

A MelanieM Review Tour: Moments by RJ Scott

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

An actor on possession charges, hell bent on destroying his own life meets a man who quietly works to make the world a better place.

Jacob Riley is a typical Hollywood former child star with issues. He has already done prison time and at the age of twenty-six has been arrested again.

Ethan Myers is the owner and manager of Macs, an education center providing teaching and learning to local low income families. Losing his partner to cancer leaves him lost and alone and he buries himself in his work to start to mend his broken heart.

Sparks fly when Jacob has to complete his community service at Macs. Their relationship grows against a background of disenfranchised street gang members, arson, the Oscars, and despite their prejudices.

Can Jacob Riley be saved?

RJ Scott has a clear eyed view of addiction and its effects on the person in the center but all of those around them.  Moments pulls us into the ugly mindset of Jacob at the beginning of the story, making it clear to the reader what his self destructive life style is costing him and how it is hurting those next to him.  Jacob is deep in self denial, easily placing the blame for all his problems everywhere but where it belongs, on himself.  Jacob is a dislikable piece of work, and Scott has done her homework on addictions when creating a portrait of a man whose life is spiraling out of control.  It is realistic, and absolutely believable.  It will take half the story before the reader will start to connect with Jacob but we do and then we start to hope that he will find his way clear.

Scott’s other characters are equally complex and endearing, from Ethan to those secondary characters whose lives are enriched by Mac’s. Scott gives the reader a real feel for the spirit of community that exists in such a situation as well as the dangers that are inherent by locating the center near active gang influences.  The author has a number of plot threads in motion in the story, almost too many to fully explore in this length book. I could wish that the gang element had been enlarged, especially considering the importance it plays in the lives of three characters so central to  the story.  Certain gang members appear, act accordingly as gangs would and then disappear for the rest of the novel.  And another surprising element occurs late in the story with no hint that it might occur earlier in the narrative.  It would have been nice to have laid a foundation for such actions earlier because for me to have that person act as they did made no sense as far as their personality and character was concerned.  Sorry to be vague, but necessary so as not to give away any spoilers.

But those concerns aside, Moments has a terrific story to tell and RJ Scott delivers it concisely, and with great clarity about her subject.  I connected with these characters and that kept me by their sides every step of the way to the end.  Don’t hesitate to pick this one up!

Cover art by Meredith Russell is nice and works for the character but I would have liked to have more content involved in the design.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Forgotten Paradise by Shira Anthony

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

It’s dangerous diving for secrets.

When a mega company threatens to take over his family-owned business, programming prodigy Adam Preston escapes the stress with a much-needed vacation in the Dominican Republic. There he meets attractive, intelligent, insightful Jonah James, a scuba dive instructor, and what starts as a holiday fling soon blossoms into much more.

But Jonah has a secret: ten years ago he woke up on an island beach with no idea how he got there… or even who he is. Their paradise may not be as perfect as it seems. When Jonah’s memories come crashing back like waves on the sand, will it be Adam clinging to the proverbial life raft, or will the two men find a safe harbor to ride out the storm?

I’m such a fan of the Dreamspun Desires series from Dreamspinner.  Here in Forgotten Paradise Shira Anthony plays with the person with amnesia trope, another staple in those romances (still is).  Who can resist a MC with a forgotten past? The mystery man!  That just screams romance and a history that will come thundering back at some point to break up or threaten whatever couple is the focus.  Readers love that, myself included.

Here its Jonah who washed up on the gorgeous shores of the DR ten years ago, almost a tabula rasa.  Since then he’s built a life and been happy…almost, except for those pesky headaches.  Then Adam Preston comes along with his  own basket full of problems hoping to push them aside for a brief holiday of fun in the sun.

The author is so familiar with her location that it jumps to life on the page, the water so blue, the suns shines so brightly I’m surprised I didn’t have to wear sunglasses to read my Kindle.  It’s clear she has great affection for that location and the DR in general.  So it makes sense to put Jonah there as well.  It gave him and Adam a firm foundation for their tentative romance and friendship.  That’s needed for when things start to come crashing down.

I have to admit, for the first portion of the story, Adam represents the more fully realized of the two characters, and not just because Jonah is missing 10 years of his memory.  Adam’s personal baggage is laden with the fear of failure to his family, duties, self worth, things most people can relate to.   That he’s so stressed out he’s unable to unwind? Well I think there are many out there who could relate to that and Adam too.

Jonah represents a bigger question mark and that’s not just the void where 10 years should be.  I liked that Anthony had him seek help for his amnesia, that he wasn’t content to ride out his life with a 10 year blank spot (sort of).  I didn’t quite believe that.  Especially once all of  Jonah’s memories came back and then when we switch locations. Its then you realize this Jonah is far more interesting than the one you meet on the island.  Turns out you do need the more than just the sweetness here.

The second half of the story deals with the repercussions of the recovered memory, not only for Jonah but for everyone he left behind and Adam as well.  It’s a  far more intricate and interesting story, as it deals with a past Jonah as well as the one he became.  I almost wish there had been more of this  but then I can hear the complaints that we didn’t get enough of the couple before to connect with so I guess there’s just more I’d want, a common refrain.

There is one element there irritates me and I can’t go into it here without a huge spoiler but it deals with a best friend of Jonah’s and an action of his.  To me how it was handled still feels all wrong.  But that’s just me.

Forgotten Paradise by Shira Anthony is another lovely romance from the Dreamspun Desires series.  You get a HEA for a great couple and a visit to a paradise that will make you want to book a flight immediately.

Cover art by Bree Archer goes straight to paradise with the theme.
