A Mika Review: Designs of Desire (Desires Entwined #1) by Tempeste O’Riley

Rating:  3 out of 5 stars

Designs of Desire coverArtist James Bryant has forearm crutches in every color from rainbow for fun to sleek black for business. He even has a pair with more paint splatters than metal. After his family’s rejection and abuse from a man he thought loved him, James only just gets through the day by painting. He lives in constant fear that he’s not worthy of anything, let alone love.

As CEO of his company, Carrington Enterprises, Seth Burns is a take-charge kind of guy, and he is instantly smitten by the artist helping with his newest project. When he witnesses James suffer a panic attack, a protective instinct he never knew he had kicks in. He truly believes nothing is unobtainable—including James—if he’s willing to put in the time and effort.

James is shy and confused by Seth’s interest in him as a person. With Seth’s support, can he work through his fears to finally find the true love he deserves, or will someone finally land the crushing blow he won’t survive?

Hmm, where do I start? It was an extremely quick relationship to begin with. I mean, one moment on the page James is introduced to Seth, the next it seems that Seth is sticking his tongue down his throat. There were some things I didn’t understand or had issues with. It didn’t come across as James agreeing with some of the things that he got involved with. Yes he spoke up, but did that mean he agreed to be in a D/s relationship?  I honestly didn’t think he knew what it meant in the beginning. I found Seth to be over bearing, aggressive and down right condescending. Don’t get me wrong I didn’t totally dislike him, just for a majority of the book. I felt he came on extremely too strong to someone who’s been abused in multiple ways. I disagreed with how the character of James allowed everyone in his life to take over.

I didn’t understand the relationship between Seth and James primarily because I felt like certain components were missing in this story. James past should have been better addressed, maybe in a prologue. James’ family issue was another issue, it didn’t really have much explanation. And then the bad guys came out of left field. It seemed like the reader was expected to understand certain things. Also it felt like “the accident” was talked around. I guess if we really put two and two together we’ll get it. I didn’t expect riddles; I’m honestly not clear on the car part of the situation.

I felt like the “mystery” was really secondary to the story, it felt like an afterthought. I did find myself enjoying it more as the story progressed, although I wish for a little more details. Certain characters grabbed me more than others. Rhys, however late he entered the party. and Chase were two of those.  Chase was a little petulant but that was okay. Seth only grew on me because of his treatment of James. James deserved some happiness. I mean everything bad that could happen, happened to him.

All in all, I liked the story just wished for more…of a little of everything here. I recommend this to people with patience, who are familiar with the bdsm theme.

Cover artist Reese Dante. After reading the book I felt the cover was accurately correct. It helped me visualize the bracelets and rings that James needed.

A Mika Review: Him for The Holidays by Jaxx Steele

Rating: 2 stars out of 5

Him for the Holidays coverDon meets Trevor when he goes home for the holidays. Could a long distance romance be his holiday wish come true?

Donald Bradley is home for the holidays. While running an errand for his mother, he meets Trevor Oxford, who is everything Don could ask for in a man. However, Don does not intend to have any type of relationship with him. Trevor lives and works in the small town and Don lives two hundred miles away in the city. Trevor is confident and aggressive in his pursuit of Don, who is confused by Trevor’s attentiveness. Don wants to run away from Trevor and run to him at the same time.
Could a long distance romance be just what Don needs to start the New Year? Will Don accept what Trevor has to offer, giving him what he really wants this holiday season?

This was a first for me by the author. It was cute while not all the way smart. By smart I mean taking unnecessary precautions during sexual intercourse. I’m a big safe sex person during my reads unless they’re discussed between the two characters. Obviously here wasn’t. I don’t know if I liked Donald or not, I feel like I didn’t get enough of back history for him to make any kind of judgment about his personality. I knew next to nothing of Trevor as well. Apart of me feels like I started reading this in the middle, there wasn’t a beginning for any buildup to happen between the two guys. It went from one meeting, to instant gratification. Some people might appreciate that, but I just wasn’t feeling it.

I wanted to know more of Trevor, he was this guy who came back to town to help run his uncle’s store, and he was also an R.N. Like I said previously I didn’t connect with either character. I wouldn’t recommend this based as it felt incomplete. It ended… that’s it. No grand gestures, no empty promises. I don’t even know if Donald knows Trevor last name.

Cover Art by Posh Gosh. Since we never discussed the guys ages, I’m guessing these two could be seen as Donald & Trevor. They both seem kind of older than the two in the book, though and it really doesn’t invite me in.

A Mika Review: Green the Whole Year ‘Round by Rowan McAllister

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5 stars

GreentheWholeYear'RoundCouples counselor Ted Freeman is still reeling six months after his partner left him. He desperately hopes a week of peace and quiet at a quaint mountain cabin will be just what he needs to regain his personal and professional confidence.

Neil Kelly is a computer programmer who just got promoted to full time and is celebrating over Christmas by going on his first real grown-up vacation at the Cabins in the Pines Inn. When he runs into Ted, his longtime crush, Neil can’t believe his luck, and he vows to do whatever it takes to make Ted see him as something other than the dork next door.

Neil wasn’t part of Ted’s plan for the holidays, but he might turn out to be exactly what Ted needs.

Half a star extra for Neil’s accurate portrayal on the cover! I thought this was a cute holiday read. I really enjoyed Neil, he was super adorable and a sweetheart. I liked how he was always choose to be high spirited even when he felt down. I didn’t like Ted in the beginning, his character seemed stand offish, and very pompous. I definitely think he needed a wake up call earlier than what he got. I like that he came around and decided to live a little. Neil was amazingly optimistic, and I think that’s why Ted was able to open up some. Recommended for readers that enjoy cute little holiday novellas, and amazingly gingered twinks!

The cover artist Christy Caughie created this cover, and it was accurate for where the guys were. Neil was spot on with that garishly orange cold. I definitely liked him; he was super adorable in the book

A Mika Review: Hummingbird House by Kenzie Cade

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

HummingbirdHouseLGTo honor his grandmother’s final request, Trenton Appleton drops everything to visit the family’s ancestral home: Hummingbird House, where he experienced his first kiss and first heartbreak with Callum Eason.

Eight years ago, confused by his attraction to Trent, Callum reacted badly. But with help he never expected, Callum found himself and learned to accept who he was.

Now Trent is back at Hummingbird House, and Callum has his opportunity to salvage their friendship, at least. But Trent is less receptive than he was all those years ago. Still, Callum is determined to show Trent he has changed and keep his promise to Trent’s grandmother. When past mistakes repeat themselves, Callum must break the cycle before his last chance with Trent passes him by.

This short work was a lovely, sweet read, and I was able to finish it in an afternoon. I really enjoyed it. It was romantic,  charming, and heartwarming. I didn’t want it to end. Indeed, I wish it was a full length novel. Trent was amazingly strong once he set his mind to it. I really enjoyed Callum as well; he was determined to fight for what he wanted.

Both gents have a big past of each other’s lives. They have made their mark, and it was only a matter of time before they were reintroduced back in each other’s lives. Trent was dealing with his emotions and grief from the death of grandmother. I wish we could have seen actual moments in time with her; she was really warm and loving for him. Trent’s own mother was no where to be found, and while she decided she didn’t want to be a parent; his grandmother did with open arms. We start the book by her writing letters because she has the feeling that her time is ending. I loved what she had to say, and all her sneaky ways of getting letters to Trent at different times.

Upon her death, she made sure he went back to the United Kingdom to the family’s Hummingbird House Estate which has always been in the family. It was hard for Trent returning to a place where his first heartbreak ended, but he would have done anything to please that woman. The family theme is heavenly in this book. Callum’s family welcomed Trent back with open arms and warm hearts. I found myself cheesing through certain moments in the book. I love how Callum decided that he wasn’t going to just walk away because Trent told him. Callum was very patient, and I thought he was cute for interacting with the grandmother and no one knew new about it.

I would definitely recommend this sweet read to people who want to see your one true loves returned to each other. I wish we could have gotten this in full length, who knows maybe one day down the road Kenzie might produce a full length sequel. 

Cover Art by Catt Ford. I actually liked this cover a lot. I loved the snowy background, because it was Christmastime in the novel. I think both of these guys descriptions are spot on with Trent & Callum.

A Mika Review:  Tangled Mind by Posy Roberts

Rating:  4.5 stars out of 5

TangledMindFSFor years, Beck Lund has taken care of his volatile boyfriend, Brady, always putting Brady’s needs above his own and walking on eggshells to keep the peace. After Brady overdoses on heroin, his death devastates Beck.  Thankfully, Beck’s best friend, Timothy Kallis, finds him the help he needs. Beck slowly starts to recover and moves in with Timothy to get back on his feet, but he’s oblivious that Timothy is secretly nursing romantic affection for him.

Beck focuses on his own healing for the first time in his life. After months of challenging his codependent tendencies and learning how to stand up for himself, Beck finally starts to trust his gut and hopes to one-day love again. Timothy is patient throughout, taking care of Beck in ways no one ever has. But if Beck can’t recognize Timothy’s affection for him, it might be too late for them to move beyond friendship.

I loved this book. Wow, I am thoroughly impressed with this book. Posy Roberts definitely brings the emotions out of you. I love her Northern Spark series too. That was such an realistic fiction series, and I truly adored it. This book was such an easy read as it was the right pace for me. Not too fast, or slow but just right  It was easy to fall in love with Timothy. He was this perfect guy. I mean he did not once push boundaries, he was there for Beck, he did not judge him.

Beck was such an amazing guy. How did he put up with being in a relationship for 11 years and it all being about the other guy? I applaud his strength, his will, and his heart. This book touched on a lot about grief, guilt, and death. The beginning of the story was hard to read since it was from Beck’s point of view, it was everything he had to endure. I could not imagine being in love, or dedicating myself for so long to one person who is not in love with you first. I mean it is almost like Beck having to sacrifice him in order to be in a relationship. Throughout all grief he endured was Timothy standing in the background willing to help, listen or just be a friend to Beck.

I would recommend this book to anyone. I truly loved it, I found myself crying at some parts but it was elation for Beck mostly. He had to learn how to be about Beck. He should growth from the beginning towards the end. Why 4.5 stars instead of 5? I loved it for sure, but I did feel like I need an epilogue at the ending. While I was happy with ending, I just didn’t want it to end, but it is classic Posy for her to cut it off. Crosses fingers we at least get a novella about these two.

A Mika Review: My Mate Jack (A Heated Beat Story #1) by Garrett Leigh

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

My Mate JackWill Barter’s has loved his best mate Jack for as long as he can remember. They’ve shared everything: love, life, laughs, even Will’s first kiss. But Jack’s straight, and Will’s long-buried infatuation means nothing until their last summer together draws to a close.

Then one night, everything changes, but with Will bound for university in Leeds, and Jack for his dream DJ job in Ibiza, there’s no time to explore their blurred lines. Before long, all that’s left are secrets, lies, and misunderstandings.

In the months that follow, anger and hurt overshadow fifteen years of friendship, and Will must dig deep to remember Jack is his mate… his best mate, and nothing matters more than that, right?

A new Garrett Leigh series, sure I’ll take it. Garrett Leigh is dubbed Queen of Angst in my mind palace. She produces the angst like no other. I was on pins and needles throughout Will and Jack’s separation the entire time. I was angry at both of them for not being angry themselves at the long bouts of time between communications. Why couldn’t Will get a better bloody phone? G.L. had me fussing using proper English words. I think I called my husband a wanker four or five times while reading this. You men don’t get it, someone step up and say something; now back to the story at hand, lol.

Will and Jack have been best mates since they were seven years old. Things changed the summer year before graduating high school. We can all guess since it’s a friend to lover’s thing. I automatically thought when things changed we’ll see them at college doing what all new couple do, try to maintain their relationship. Well no, that didn’t happen. Will went to uni, and Jack went to Ibiza to d.j. I didn’t think it would be so hard for two guys who spent most of their lives together to have communication issues once they leave home.  Lots and lots of communication issues. I was livid, I wanted one of these guys to grow up and throw out the first line, but of course we got the run around. In between them we had family issues, resolved issues, jealous boyfriends, and much, much more. Not in those orders but they could have the catalyst for an entire different ending. I was happy with the ending, I don’t know if Will & Jack were but I am. Maybe they are happy but not happy with their journey to romance. I hope we find out.

I would recommend this to fans of Garrett Leigh it’s her typical angst filled novels. I would recommend to new readers who are interested in realistic fiction, and or new to angst, and enjoy friends to lovers themes. I enjoyed reading it, I wish it was more, but I’m okay because it’s book 1 in a series. I look forward to reading about the Will & Jack next time.

Book Cover: G.D. Leigh.  I thought it was just alright.

A Mika Review:  The Devil’s Ride (Sex & Mayhem #2) by K.A. Merikan

Rating:   5 out of 5

The Devil's Ride coverTooth. Vice President of the Coffin Nails Motorcycle Club. On a neverending quest for vengeance. The last thing he needs is becoming a permanent babysitter for a male hooker.
Lucifer. Fallen. Lost. Alone.

After a childhood filled with neglect and abuse, followed by his mother’s suicide, Lucifer set out into the world alone. There was nothing for him out there other than taking it one day at a time. As the bastard son of the Coffin Nails club president, Lucifer never got much fatherly love. So when the Nails show up at the strip joint Lucifer works in, the last thing he expects is to be put in the custody of Tooth, Nails Vice President famous for his gruesome interrogation techniques. The man proves to be the sexiest beast Lucifer has ever met. He is also older, straight, and an itch Luci can’t ever scratch.

Tooth’s life came to a halt twelve years ago. His lover got brutally murdered, police never found the perpetrators, and all leads were dead ends. To find peace and his own justice, Tooth joined the Coffin Nails, but years on, he’s gotten nowhere with the case, yet still lives on with the burning fire for revenge.
Babysitting a deeply scarred teenager with a talent for disappearing is the last thing on his bucket list. He promised himself to never get attached to someone like him again. To make sure the openly gay boy is safe in the clubhouse, Tooth is stuck keeping an eye on him. The big, blue, attention seeking gaze is drawing Tooth in, but fucking the president’s son is a complete no-go, even when both their feelings go beyond lust.

What Tooth doesn’t know is that Lucifer might hold the key to the closure Tooth so desperately needs.

Tooth is my biker hubby! I have spoken exclusively with Kat about my significant hatred of Stitch. I was hoping that the next biker was still a bad ass but loveable. Well, I asked and boy did she deliver. People, Tooth is amazing in every sense of the word. I loved everything about this book. It was a slow burner for sure. It was very different from book 1 in every way it could be. I kept telling myself that this was a rainbow, fluffy biker book. I loved it, I enjoyed the sentimental side of the story. Seriously, I do not know if I’ve ever read a biker book where the treatment, and judgment of such a club was welcoming. Sure everything was peaches and cream, but I expected the worst and I was shocked how easy it was. I love Luci, he was damaged from his past, but he slowly but surely gave himself over. I honestly was right with Tooth in wanting to protect him. One thing I was worried about was the age gap and I wanted it to be far bigger, I do not think 19-32 was that bad. I was hoping for 40’s to early 20’s but I was happy with what we got instead.

Tooth was careful, trusting, and just downright sexy. From his first moments on the page, I was enthralled with him. Every biker character brought something different. For all of Priests’ misgivings I was proud of him. He was not the father that Luci needed in his earlier life but he was adjusting. I kept thinking of how this big bad biker club in Detroit was going to be okay with a cute blond twink living in the club, nothing dramatic happened. I don’t think the derogatory word “f*&” was used more than once. I am really impressed the level of acceptance that was portrayed by the mc club. I liked the Priest admitted he wasn’t perfect, that was a great viewpoint to put forth.

The romance was hot, and at times really beautiful because of both mc’s history. I do not know how I feel about some of the plot storyline. I think it could have been different, but as it was plausible, it didn’t take away from the story for me. I did not know how I was going to feel with the Satanist route, but again it didn’t take away from the story. Every biker had all Lucifer’s different names. It was funny at times, and I honestly will miss Bell. I hope we get a novella, or another book for them. I’m definitely rooting for these two.

I would recommend this book to everyone. It was not that BDSM heavy, it was hurt/comfort at most. It was Tooth needing to redeem himself because of his past, and Luci needing someone to love him. I would recommend this to lovers of all things bikers, this duo made me fall in love with bikers all over. They showed me that not everybody in the biker world has to be nasty or rude. Some people are accepting of certain things.

Cover Art by Natasha Snow. I loved it. I kept looking at the cover, wishing I could see Tooth’s face. I really think it showed  a visual picture of Tooth, his masculinity while he was really caring and sweet.

A Mika Review: Loveblood by M.J. O’Shea

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

A Harmony Ink Press Young Adult Title

Loveblood coverMax Appleton and his mother Celia are on the run, hiding from an abusive father and husband who’s also a notoriously bad pack leader. When Max hit puberty and it became obvious he’d never make an alpha wolf, his father turned the brunt of his anger toward his inferior son and his beta wolf wife for producing him. Max and Celia find sanctuary in a garden cottage at Holly Court, the sprawling estate where Celia’s oldest friend lives with her pack alpha husband, three daughters, and teenaged son Jonah.

Jonah Spellman has what seems like the perfect life. His family is close, his dad is respected by their whole pack, and he’s been groomed to take over for as long as he can remember. Everything is set, his whole life planned, and Jonah works hard to be exactly what everyone expects. He’s under enough pressure without a runaway from a bad pack complicating his life.

When two teenaged werewolves from very different worlds meet one snowy January day, both of their worlds get turned inside out. From the moment they meet, nothing will be the same for Jonah or Max ever again.

I’m usually selective when it comes to reading YA books. They tend to be a little “young” for me.  I gave this one a chance based on it being a paranormal book. It wasn’t the best or the worst really. I think it was relatively sweet, maybe too much. I did like the paranormal aspect. I liked the heat and rut themes as well. I would really have enjoyed it if it would have been an mpreg book. I do think it was instant love, and I was fairly okay with that. I did find myself rolling my eyes a lot, but I tend to do those during YA books.

Max was definitely a fierce little wolf. His mother decided to move them down to Portland after years of abuse. They end up at Celia’s best friend from her home pack estate. Instantly there’s a connection between Max and Jonah. Jonah who is the son and future alpha of Holly Court’s pack. In the beginning Jonah seems like a nerd or a closed off kid. Well that changes quickly with the introduction of his future mate.

It was cute, all the cuddling, and closeness so quickly. Max and Jonah relationship started quickly. Max was so enthralled with Jonah that he forgot about school starting. He forgot about other people, a new school and everything else. Jonah was so wrapped up in Max he forgot about Zoe. His girlfriend, future mate who he was blood-bonded with since childhood. It wouldn’t be High School without bullies, frenemies, chosen sides, and unrequited love typical YA books.

There is a ton of jealously, lust, betrayal, fondling, and a plethora of more emotions. I did think that it was too “pat” of Jonah’s parents to be against Jonah being bonded to him because of pack disorder. Of course we had to have the fall out of Max and his mother’s urgent departure from their home pack. They brought the cliché destruction.

In the end I do feel like for a YA book it was good. It was rather fairy tale-ish because of the love surrounding Jonah and Max. Certain things were left unsaid for me. I can say if YA isn’t your thing then bypass this. I’m on the fence with YA generally but I did enjoy it. I liked the acceptance of certain things between the main characters. I liked that it wasn’t your typical YA High School bullying, I do think it was nice to see the parents have a huge impact on the boys. Would I recommend this? Certainly to YA audiences, people that like the cuteness theme level. It was fluffy, I did enjoy it though

Cover Art by M.J. O’Shea. I actually liked the cover based on it being about wolf shifters and running through the forest.

A Mika Review:  Unwrapping Hank by Eli Easton

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

Unwrapping Hank coverSloane loves a good mystery. He grew up as the son of two psychiatrists, so he finds most people tediously easy to figure out. He finds his way to Pennsylvania State University, longing for a rural experience, and ends up being lured into joining a frat by Micah Springfield, the hippest guy on campus.

Nothing in Sloane’s classes is as intriguing as Hank Springfield, Micah’s brother and fellow frat house member. Hank looks like a tough guy—big muscles, tattoos, and a beard—but his eyes are soft and sweet. He acts dumb, but he’s a philosophy major. He’s presumably straight, but then why does Sloane feel such crazy chemistry whenever Hank is around? And why does Hank hate Sloane so much?

When Sloane ends up stuck on campus over Christmas, Micah invites him to spend the holidays at their family farm in Amish country. It’s a chance to experience a true Americana Christmas–and further investigate the mystery that is Hank Springfield.

Can Sloane unlock the secrets of this family and unwrap the heart hidden inside the beefcake?

I really enjoyed this novella length book. I liked Sloane from the beginning, he was hilarious. Sloane is a freshman new pledge living in the Delta Sigma Phi at Pennsylvania State University; he is extremely cynical for such a young age. We can attribute these to his not so attentive parents, who are world class psychologist and jet setters. Sloane immediately attacked to the big buff guy with tattoos washing dishes in the frat house. Hank is that guy, I liked him, sure he seemed a little OCD-ish with the working out, but to each it’s own. I honestly didn’t see him as the frat type based on the other guys but that’s what I liked about the story.

Instantly Sloane is taken with Hank, because how could he not? This guy is a walking contradiction. I liked the little ways that Sloane tried to figure Hank out. It was down right funny at times. Micah is definitely a character that steals certain scenes. He’s Hank’s older brother and president of the frat, he also a sweet, down to earth guy. I liked Micah because he was super supportive to both guys.

Sloane’s parents end up ditching him for Christmas, thus leaving Sloane all alone in the States. Who comes to the rescue, Micah of course? I don’t want to give away the rest but there are definitely sweet moments, electricity moments, and tears to me.  An Amish sighting and all types of pie. There are instances where Sloane doesn’t know what to do, but between Micah being extremely helpful and Hank playing coy, I felt we all were winning. I hope Eli decides to give us Micah’s story because I need to know his decisions.

I definitely recommend Unwrapping Hank by Eli Easton.  It has terrific characters and enjoyable plot.

Cover Art by Reese Dante. Actually I think the guy on the cover looked way older then “20 years” old. He looks like a 30 yr old gym rat; I did like the gift and the dog aspect.

A Mika Review:  The Chase and The Catch by A.F. Henley

Rating: 2 stars out of 5

The Chase and the Catch coverAfter one of his fans committed suicide, John lost everything: lover, confidence, drive. When he is given a chance to get back on his feet, he is happy to take it—even if it’s just writing an actor’s biography. It might not be romance, or even fiction, but it’s something, and there are worse people to work for than the charming, successful Parker Chase.

That doesn’t mean working for Parker is easy, however. A staunch supporter of living for the moment, Parker goes against everything John believes in. He feels out of place in every moment of Parker’s Hollywood life, stuck in a game of wits that at times seems almost contrived…

It took me four days to get through this book. This was a first for me by this author. I was so excited to read this based on the blurb and I started reading. Well among my journey of reading, I can’t tell you why it is a story. She John is an romance novelist who is commissioned to write an autobiography for the worlds’ most famous actor Parker Chase. Yeah okay, that’s all. I understand the title, but reading it didn’t make sense. They had chemistry; it seemed like things transpired under seven days. Parker Chase comes off to be this arrogant, wealthy actor. I can’t give a descriptive vision of him, nor do I remember him. I honestly don’t remember reading anything of truth or wisdom from him.

John wasn’t any better, he had issues. A fan of his decided to commit suicide in front of him and it changed his life. It went from that vision to him deciding to take the job. It was one long winded beginning. There wasn’t any middle or ending for me. I think what is affecting me is the romance.  I couldn’t deduce when they would have been interested, at what point in the story does flirtation happen? So basically, John has to figure out which truths or lies he’s going to get from Parker. It was so disappointing.

The climax of the story to me happened at 89%, and it blew me mind. Really? Are we in high school? How cliché was it to have all non plot based on a bet? It was super childish and just seemed unlikely.

The only interesting part was William Anson, the man servant/butler/Alfred Pennyworths. He might have been memorable  because he told John to leave, and nothing good was going to come from him being there. I understand, if Parker is as famous as it’s put out, then why in the world they would want a romance novelist whose being MIA to write his autobiography. It was one big boys club catastrophe, and not in the good.

Cover Art by: Aisha Akeju.  The spider web was enticing for me, because it seemed like maybe we would be solving a mystery. Well we weren’t, again I didn’t see the romance bloom, or get references. The cover is nice though.
