A Stella Review: Set Me Free by Kitty Stephens

RATING  3.75 out of 5 stars

Set Me FreeAaron Ledbetter’s future had been planned out for him since before he was born. Each year, the Ledbetter family vacation on Tybee Island gave Aaron a chance to briefly free himself from his family’s expectations. When he meets Jonas “Lucky” Luckett, a caricature artist in town with the traveling carnival, he must choose between the life that’s been mapped out for him, and the chance at true love.

Set Me Free is Kitty Stephens‘ debut novel, in my opinion a very well done young adult story. Two things conquered me, the characters and the writing.

Lucky is eighteen years old, his highschool teacher found him a summer job to a carnival off the coast of Georgia. He is nervous, knowing this is a great chance for his future in an art college but it can’t wait to start enjoying a summer doing what he can do best.

Aaron is looking forward his three months on the Tybee Island to live without his parents’ expectations to go to Harward, take over their company and marry his bestfriend, Lyn. He wants nothing of that.

Aaron and Lucky come from two very different words, being together is hard,  for Aaron, deeply in the closet with no intention of coming out due to parents that have planned his life without asking for their son’s dreams. And for Lucky too, out and proud, with no money and only his talent and a supporting (except for distracting boyfriend) mum. It was a pleasure to see their relationship bloom, Aaron let go of his fears and open up to Lucky. At the same time it was painful too, especially when Aaron and Lyn kept things from each other, afraid of the implications their actions and with who they fall in love, could have on their lives.

I found the writing very good, the reading flew easily and I get to the end without even realizing it. I particularly loved the descriptions, I really felt myself in the carnival, on the beach, at Lucky’s booth waiting for him to draw me in. The author did an amazing work, she sucked me into the MCs’ lives and it was impossible to let them go.

At the end what I got was a story about freedom, summer loves and finally achieve your wishes. It is sweet, emotional and lovely. I feel I can recommend it. I can say I’m curious to read more by Kitty Stephens.

The cover design by CB Messer is what caught my attention first. It’s so cute and sweet, I simply couldn’t resist. And it perfectly portraits the story of Aaron and Jonas.

A Stella Review: Love, Marriage, and a Baby Carriage (2016 Daily Dose – A Walk on the Wild Side) by C.S. Poe

RATING:  4.5 out of 5 stars

Love, Marriage and a Baby CarriageTheodore Reinhart is a young man looking for love. In San Diego. At a convention. For penguin shifters. WaddleCon is the go-to event of the year when looking for your life partner, but Theodore isn’t comfortable with the game they’ve turned dating into, nor does the convention provide for the gay community. A mistake in speed dating table assignments puts Theodore in front of Wesley O’Neill, a handsome and confident model who lets it slip that he’s definitely noticed the spark of attraction between them.

A perfect date ends prematurely when Theodore finds an abandoned egg in a bathroom trash can. Unable to leave it behind, Theodore and Wesley play a mad game of cat and mouse across the resort trying to keep it safe, all while growing closer to one another. Wesley may be the forever partner Theodore came looking for, but their relationship won’t work if they don’t make room for a little addition to the family.

A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2016 Daily Dose package “A Walk on the Wild Side.”

Theodore is having a bad day. With no suitcase (lost somewhere between New York, where he lives, and San Diego, where he  has just landed for the Waddle Con), a messy hair and an awful suit (brown jacket and salmon pants. Can you imagine him?) But his bad luck has no end.  He had just discovered the Waddle Con is a convention for single people who wants to find their forever penguin partner. Yes, he is a Magellanic penguin shifter but there’re a little problem. He is really not so straight. Then forced to join a speed dating, after woman #6, he sits at a table where an unbelievable beautiful man with dimples, aka Wesley is. The attraction and something more deep soon sparkle between them. And just when their dinner date is finally going to turn the heat on, in the trash bin of the restaurant’s restroom, Theodore finds an abandoned egg.

Love, Marriage, And a Baby Carriage made my day. It is very short, nonetheless the author did an amazing work. In just 32 pages I got a complete story, sweet, funny and with no pauses. A crescendo of great scenes that wrap up with a super cute ending. It was just adorable, my first book by C.S. Poe and I can’t wait to read more by her. Plus it was the first time I read about penguin shifters, the little scene where Wes swims in the bathtub was too quick. I want more of this world, I want more of Wes, Theodore and their baby.

The cover art by Catt Ford was not made for this particular story, but for the whole “A Walk on the Wild Side” anthology. It’s intriguing and fully reflects the theme of the package. I love the use of the colors.

A Stella Review: To Arizona (2016 Daily Dose – A Walk on the Wild Side) by Meg Harding

RATING 3.75 stars  out of 5

To ArizonaDustin Charleston has just been traded to the Arizona Hares hockey team. As an otter, he’s not too pleased by this. Arizona is dry, he’s leaving his home behind, and he has to move in with a stranger. Things take an even steeper plunge when he meets his roommate.

Chandler Kipling is the captain of the Hares, a least weasel, and he’s got a bit of a thing for his new teammate. Too bad that teammate seems to hate him. And Chandler’s romantic strategies leave something to be desired. Will Dustin be able to get the message he’s trying to send? With a little time, their nightmare might turn into a dream—if they can get past their differences.

A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2016 Daily Dose package “A Walk on the Wild Side”.

Dustin is an otter shifter, he just moved to Arizona to play with a new hockey team. The desert state is really a nightmare to his otter and things go from bad to worse when he realizes Chandler, the captain of the new team and a least weasel shifter (how cute is it?), is going to host Dustin at his house.  The attraction between them is clear from the start but apparently they are more interested in  killing each other. Will they be able to act on the sparkles?

I read one other book by Meg Harding (https://scatteredthoughtsandroguewords.com/2016/04/06/a-stella-review-the-last-favor-by-meg-harding/)  and it seems she has a preference for the use of the present tense form which I hate BTW, but I can say this time it worked better for me. It wasn’t a deterrent, on the contrary my reading flew easily and I ended up devouring it.

I admit I was lost at the start because I didn’t get the whole courting ritual and Chandler’s behaviors confused me. When I finally understood it, everything made sense, I truly enjoyed and appreciated this really cute short. I’m not a great fun of sport theme stories but this little story was very good.

I liked the chemistry between Duncan and Chandler, I “felt” them through all the story. Still what I particularly adored were the second characters and the couple of scenes where different shifters played together. I would love to read more about them and I’m so hoping in a sequel or a spin off about Chris especially.

So if you’re looking for a good story to spend an hour during the coming hot days, give To Arizona a try. It was quick, well written, hot and funny.

The cover art by Catt Ford isn’t a winner. I don’t like it. I don’t like the models and surely they don’t respect how I pictured them in my mind.

A Stella Review: Succumbing to His Fear by River Mitchell

RATING  4 out of 5 stars

Succumbing To His FearAfter a life changing event makes Alfie the legal guardian of his estranged step-siblings, as well as a chance meeting one drunken night, he finds his world turned upside down when he discovers that everything he thought he knew about himself was catastrophically wrong.

Before meeting Alfie and his family, Fear was content with his casual hookups and one-night stands, purposefully keeping everyone at an arm’s length. As Alfie comes into his burgeoning feelings, a curveball shakes the two men, threatening to destroy Fear and his new found chance at happiness with Alfie.

With everything thrown into turmoil, Fear decides to fight for those he loves, Alfie and his family included. Will they be able to survive the collateral damage around them, or will they lose everything?

Alfie is 24 years old when he gets the news his father, unseen for about two decades, is killed in a car accident. The same dad who built a whole new family which Alfie knew nothing about. His two siblings are now waiting for him to take care of them. Moreover they are in the States, not in London where Alfie lives and to look after them, he needs to move to Pennsylvania. Of course he can’t abandon them and there  will begin a new life to Alfie and his new big family.

I admit I’m a sucker for those kind of stories, I adore reading about children and the first meeting with Griffin and Lily left me with puffy eyes.  I loved the nuggets. The book caught my attention from the start. It was hard to put my kindle down and deal with my RL. I liked the characters, all of them, especially cause I usually enjoy a large support cast and here we had so many great second characters I’d love to read more of. One more thing I loved was how easily Alfie accepted his desire for Fear, no second thoughts, no issues to solve, he just followed his heart and body.

The only reason why I’m giving Succumbing To His Fear “only” 4 stars is due to the mystery part, so unreal, it simply didn’t convince me. But if you can overcome the trite ending, you will find the novel by River Mitchell a pleasure to read. I surely will read the next book in the series about Tate and Talon. Can’t wait!

The beautiful cover by Jay Aheer is a winner to me.

A Stella Review: Snakes Among Sweet Flowers by Jason Huffman-Black

RATING  4 out of 5 stars

Snakes Among the FlowersTwo-time ex-con Camden Sanders has decided that Hog Mountain—an isolated community on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia—is the perfect place to continue running small scams without the threat of more prison time. But there are a few problems with this plan. One is the neighborly citizens of Hog Mountain thwarting his dirty dealings at every turn with their kindness. Another is Jackson Rhodes, a closeted Hog Mountain police officer who can see right through Cam’s good ol’ boy act and plans to catch him red-handed despite the attraction they both can feel. But the biggest problem of all is that Cam’s past is threatening to catch up with him, and it could mean trouble for more than just himself.

I already read a little free short by Jason Huffman-Black called I Am The Highway and I was pleasurably surprised by the author style. That’s why as soon I saw the new Snakes Among Sweet Flowers I was dying to read it. And the cover was a huge bonus.

Let’s start with the bad part of this review. There were some things I didn’t like: first the sex with Grant, cause I don’t like to see my MCs have sex with a third person, even if they are not together yet. I so wanted to smack Cam, not just for continuing be a some kind of thief, but for not waiting for his prince charming, Jackson. I know, there are no princes here, still I hated him. Then I didn’t like how the author chose to solve the mystery part. I felt so bad for a character who had just redeemed himself in my eyes. It wasn’t right to me and for his sweet family. Plus I had a hard time at the start at seeing Cam and Jackson made for each other and I missed some sweetness among them, till the end I was waiting for a kiss, a cuddle I didn’t get.

That said, I liked the book a lot. First of all I love stories about second chances, in this case the second chance at life Cam gets, and seeing him change so much, the small steps he did until he becomes the man he needed to be for himself and Jackson. The story sucked me in till the end. I felt all the love a great community as Hog Mountain gave to all its members, no one excluded, and when someone tried to not to welcome Cam and Jackson, there is Pastor Jimmy to set everyone straight. A place where Cam learned no one is alone, not even an ex con.

I fell to recommend  Snakes Among Sweet Flowers. I can’t wait to read more by this author.

The cover art by Angsty G is one of my favorite of this year. It simply tempts you to just pick the book and discover the tattooed man’s story.

A Stella Review: Practice Makes Perfect (Housemates #3) by Jay Northcote

Rating:  4 out of 5 stars

Practice Makes PerfectGetting experience with the guy next door seems like a great idea—until the lines blur.

Dev, a geeky first year physics student, has zero sexual experience and he’s determined to change that ASAP. After a bad time in halls of residence, he’s starting the summer term with different housemates and a new plan of action.

Ewan lives in the house next door to Dev. He’s young, free and single, and isn’t looking to change that anytime soon. When awkward circumstances throw them together, Ewan offers to help Dev out in the bedroom in return for maths tutoring, and Dev jumps at the chance.

They work their way through Dev’s sex-to-do list, but what starts as a perfect no-strings arrangement gets more complicated as their feelings for each other begin to grow. If they’re going to turn their lessons in lovemaking into something more permanent, they need to work out how they feel about each other—before they get to the end of Dev’s list.

Practice Makes Perfect is a very sweet and cute story and of course it is a winner to me. First of all because I fell in love with the main characters, Dev, with his innocent dirty talks, and ginger Scottish Ewan were hard to resist.

If you are thinking the blurb is really nothing new, you are right. The agreement between Dev and Ewan is a trope maybe over explored in romance, but I assure you Jay Northcote can write and make a plot interesting and never boring, even if it could have been easily developed into something trite.

Moreover in a story with a plot like this, often the sex scenes overwhelm the rest of the story, turning it into what we call PWP (Porn Without Plot). It’s not the case of Jay’s book, no worries. Yes, there are quite some sex scenes, very hot, cause you know, Dev has made a list, he needs to learn everything and then check off items. Still I found myself looking forward to the other scenes, where Ewan teaches Dev how to cook, or the times spent with their housemates, or the moments when they are making googly eyes at each other.

I always recommend to read series in order, I admit I haven’t read Helping Hand (Housemates #1) and Like a Lover (Housemates #2), but this third installment works perfectly as a standalone. I met the two couples of the previous books, but they were simple second characters and there wasn’t a time I felt I was missing or I should have known something.

At the end Practice Makes Perfect was a pleasure to read. I feel to recommend it.

The cover art by Garrett Leigh doesn’t conquer me but it’s well done and fitting.

A Stella Review: Shifting Silver by Brandon Witt

RATING  4,5 out of 5 stars

shifting-silverThe year is 1618, and Allakau is different from the other members of the Alaskan Yupik tribe. His people survive by hunting, but Allakau is unable to kill or eat flesh. As another season reaches its end and winter approaches, Allakau encounters a narwhal with silver eyes similar to his own. He saves the creature’s life but incurs his father’s wrath, and Allakau is given one last chance to prove himself a productive part of the tribe or be left behind to die. As he spends time alone in the woods, clues about his past and destiny begin to fall into place with the aid of another silver-eyed creature. His hunt might finally lead him to the truth about what sets him apart and where he belongs—if he can survive it.

A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2016 Daily Dose package “A Walk on the Wild Side.”

Allakau is different, he can’t hunt and he can’t eat the preys his father and brother kill to feed their family. Now he has three days until his family leaves the fishing camp for the village where the Yupik tribe is in the winter season. Three days to spend in the woods, kill an animal and finally become a man, otherwise he will be no more accepted by his father. What Allakau will find is his true nature and his eternal mate.

With just two books read, Brandon Witt has become one of my favorite authors, Under a Sky of Ash and Then the Stars Fall were simply beautiful. This novellas in the “A Walk on the Wild Side” anthology was another surprise.

Shifting Silver is a short gem, it’s powerful and mystical. The author did an amazing job with his talanted writing, the scenes were all evocative, the descriptions clear and the world building great. I felt myself into the book as rarely happens. All the characters were well defined, Lucien and Fidelis were almost ethereal, and Allakau’s mum was awesome, ready to leave her whole family to be beside her special son. I have no idea if the author is a natural or behind his writing there’s a deep research, but in this little story each word had its own meaning and was beautifully delivered, I was in awe through till the epilogue.

Shifting Silver is another recommended read by Brandon Witt. It conquered me. Give it a try.

The cover art by Catt Ford fits the story just right. I like it.

A Stella Review: How to Wish Upon a Star (Howl at the Moon #3) by Eli Easton

RATING 4 out of 5 stars

How To Wish Upon A StarDr. Jason Kunik is working on the most earth-shattering genetics project ever, DNA mapping of a new species, the quickened—dogs who can shift into human form. The problem is, no one knows the quickened exist and Jason can’t betray them by publishing his studies. When he moves to Mad Creek to continue his research in a town full of quickened, all he wants is peace, quiet, and to be allowed to bury himself in his work. Perhaps if he figures how out the mutation is activated, he can silence his own inner dog forever.

Milo is a hospice comfort dog who has bonded with, and lost, many beloved patients in his life. He intuitively understands sickness and pain on a spiritual level most can’t see. When he gains the ability to become a man, he thinks he finally has everything he ever wanted. But being a man isn’t the same thing as being loved, and taking shelter in Mad Creek isn’t the same thing as finding a home.

When a mysterious illness hits Mad Creek and threatens all the quickened in town, it’s up to the scientist and the comfort dog to figure out what it is and how to stop it. Along the way they might discover that true love is possible—if you wish upon a star.

This is the third book in the “Howl at the Moon” series, but it can be read as a stand-alone.

I can always count on Eli Easton to deliver a great reading, How To Wish Upon A Star was another winner, another good addiction to an already awesome series.

In this third book, the author gave me Milo and Jason, two very different persons, with nothing in common but clearly made for each other. Jason, so cold and immersed in his scientific world, so bad at human interactions, he lives his days closed in his laboratory working on his research.

Milo stole my heart since the first word I read about him. He is an hospice dog who lately became a man. He is shy and lovely and with a heart bigger than the star he wished upon. Impossible to not fall in love with him.

So yes, I loved the characters but I loved the plot more, the story wasn’t focused just on the MCs’ new relationship but on the whole Mad Creek population, with Tim, Lance, Roman, Matty and so many more secondary characters playing an important role in the story. As in the other installments, here too there was a mystery to solve (or better a cure to find) that forced me to stay up late and finish the book quickly.

Moreover How To Wish Upon A Star hit my soft spot for stories sweet and adorable. I very much enjoyed it. And there are promises for more, especially Rav’s own happy ending, I really can’t wait to read it. I feel to highly recommend the series to everyone.

Just a note, IMO the series needs to be read in order, I honestly don’t think this third book could be read as a standalone.

The cover art is adorable as the book. Well done.

A Stella Review: Stained by Chris T. Kat

RATING  4,5 out of 5 stars

StainedBlair Clark has reached his breaking point. Forced to leave one job because of sexual harassment, he’s having difficulty finding another. Since no one believes what happened, Blair’s left with a stain on his employment record that he can’t get rid of. He’s had to move back home with his mother. As if that’s not bad enough, he realizes his crush, Travis, is simply using him. His romantic life looks as hopeless as his job search.

Jack Ross is sure he’ll never find anyone who’ll love him for who he is. All anyone sees is the port-wine stain on his left cheek—not the man behind it. Even his mother thinks he should get rid of it. But the procedure is difficult and painful.

When Blair applies for a secretarial position with Jack’s firm, both men learn that beauty is, indeed, in the eye of the beholder. It’ll take a lot of trust to chase away their insecurities, but if they take a chance on one another, love will find a way.

I read Stained at the right time, it was exactly what I needed. I’m a huge fun of Chris T Kat, I can always count on her talent when I’m looking for something sweet. This new and unfortunately last novel was no exception. I devoured it.

Blair’s life sucks. He is 25 years old and back to live with his mum after he lost his job. A wonderful mum, loving and funny but most of all always encouraging. Blair is on job hunt as a secretary after a bad work experience where he was sexually harassed. He met Travis in his old job and he fell for him. But the guy is mean, he had no respect for Blair’s ideas and opinions, on the contrary he hurt Blair more than once. During one of these times he literally crashed with a man with a stained face. And the day after, during a job interview the man with the stained face reveals to be the new boss. Jack is an architect, he inherited the firm of his father. He’s tired of people staring at him and calling him bad names. When he met Blair, he is soon attracted to him and being caring is easy.

Stained is a super sweet story, although to me it was never too much. It was well done and easy to read. My only problem? I wanted a little more, especially in the development of the relationship between the MCs. It missed some spice and it would have be perfect. Nonetheless I think the author did great with Blair and Jack, both stained in different way, one physically, the other in the soul. Yes the title was very fitting in this case. I have to say at the beginning it was hard to me to like Blair, seeing him with Travis made me so angry with Blair himself. I wanted him to open his eyes soon and beat the guy. Luckly he fulfilled my wish. And then when he meets Jack and I read about them together I start to love them, because at the end they were perfect for each other.

I feel to recommend this story if you’re looking for something easy, quick and sweet. I was conqueered and satisfied.

The cover art by Bree Archer is a winner, I love it, it’s cute and the models are exactly how I picture Jack and Blair.

A Stella Review: Sweet by Alysa Constantine

Rating: 3,25 out of 5 stars

SweetNot every love story is a romance novel.

For Jules Burns, a lonely baker, it is the memory of his deceased husband, Andy. For Teddy Flores, a numbed-to-the-world accountant who accidentally stumbles into his bakery, it is a voyage of discovery into his deep connections to pleasure, to the world, and to his own heart.

Sweet is also the story of how we tell stories—of what we expect and need from a love story. The narrator is on to you, Reader, and wants to give you a love story that doesn’t always fit the bill. There are ghosts to exorcise, and jobs and money to worry about. Sweet is a love story, but it also reminds us that love is never quite what we expect, nor quite as blissfully easy as we hope.

I’m in the minority here cause readers seem to have loved Sweet. I didn’t love it but I liked it. I don’t think I’ll going to reread it in the next future but I am so grateful to have discovered a new to me author.

Jules is still recovering from the death of his husband Andy, a recovering spent in Buttermilk’s kitchen, his bakery, doing what he knows and does better, be a pastry chef. He doesn’t have a lot of relationships outside her kitchen, apart from the awesome ‘Trice. When he meets and starts to feel something for the cute Teddy he has no idea how to act on it. Maybe he is not ready to leave Andy on the past. But he has to make space in his heart for a new unexpected love or he will lose his second chance at love.

I had little troubles with the book from the start, I liked the writing since it was unusual in some parts and well done, but too many times the sentences were too long and I had to go back and reread them because it was so easy to me to be lost in them. Surely it was just my limit but it was a huge deterrent.

Moreover I didn’t love the MCs, I found them childish and unsure of their minds. I still liked them, I get glimpses of real life in their scenes, tender and romantic till the end. Although all the positive elements, Sweet didn’t fully catch my attention. I have to admit the first half was pretty good, it warmed my heart reading Jules’ blog posts and the teasing with Teddy. Then there was a change, or better an addiction in the cast whose name I’m not going to mention cause I don’t want to spoil it, from that moment to me the story lost its value and credibility and I wasn’t able to find something good to cling on.

I gave Sweet 3,25 stars because at the end I liked it and I’m still curious to read more by Alysia Constantine.

The book design and cover illustrations by CB Messer is simple, clean and different. Nicely done.
